[Goanet-News] CONTROVERSY: Truth of Cortalim is in the past (editorial, Herald)
Truth of Cortalim is in the past Monday's political machiavellianism at Cortalim brings to mind a carbon copy enactment years ago at Navelim Assembly constituency, when Churchill Alemao intervened to ensure that his then chum Luizinho Faleiro was elected unopposed. On that occasion, Alemao ensured that all opponents contesting against Faleiro in that elections withdrew from the election fray, thereby ensuring a walk-over for Falerio, resulting in the latter getting elected unopposed. The technique employed at Navelim is similar to the one repeated at Cortalim on Monday. Though not new, it is a disturbing trend, which makes a mockery of democracy and fair play, and adds a subverting dimension to Goan electoral politics. It was widely believed that apart from veiled and even direct threats issued to opponents, the opponents are infused with Vitamin M, in a bid to ensure that they withdrew from the electoral contest. Lately however, apart from the candidates being rewarded with manna, party leaders too seem to be beneficiaries of such arrangements. We are not certain if the same modus operandi was used by the BJP to get the opponents to Alina Saldanha to withdraw from the race at Cortalim. But, it would appear to anyone, with a head on his shoulders, that Dabolim MLA Mauvin Godinho had a vital role in ensuring the withdrawal of the Congress nominee Raymond D'Sa and Independent Ramakant Borkar from the contest. Now, Congress High Command emissaries are groping for alibis to establish why Raymond D'Sa withdrew from the race. Would they and the high command have the courage to open up the story as to how a little known person was foisted as a Congress candidate in the March elections against Matanhy Saldanha? On that occasion, the action surprised everybody, and it was widely believed that Godinho had forged a reciprocal understanding with the BJP to field a weak candidate against Matanhy, and in turn, the BJP would foist a weak candidate against Godinho at Dabolim. That Congress candidate Caetano Xavier eventually later lost even the panchayat elections and emerged fourth in the ward garnering just 64 votes! If the Congress High Command is serious and committed to arrest the malaise affecting the party and unravel the 'mysteries' of the election debacle in March, the Defence Minister A K Anthony Committee study report on the reasons for the defeat of the Congress, should be cast into the dust bin. What the party ought to have done is to ascertain how some party leaders initiated efforts in their self-interest, sacrificing party interest. Another case of such deals appears to be the truck between Manohar Parrikar and Babush Monserratte this year when a weak candidate was fielded in Panjim against Parrikar, and in return, the BJP foisted a weak alliance candidate at Santa Cruz against Monseratte. There is an excellent precedent of such type of match-fixing: In yet another case in the past involving Parrikar contesting Panjim seat, the Congress deliberately foisted a weak candidate in the person of Ramesh Silimkhan. This was despite the fact that it was known that Slimkhan was close to Parrikar, and, in fact, Parrikar had made him the Mayor of Panjim earlier. As expected, Silimkhan failed to have a public election meeting worth the name in Panjim, and it was widely claimed that on Election Day, he was no where around, thereby offering a cake-walk victory to Parrikar. Of course, an element of blackmail, as hinted at by the Congress emissary also played a vital role in the ultimate result. Godinho's utterances are an excuse because certainly Godinho had asked D'Sa to withdraw from the race. What we saw on the TV, with Raymond proclaiming that no Congress leader expressed support is part of the game. Though electorate goes through brief spells of euphoria as it happened at the assembly election, Goan polity has fallen to the ground with a thud with such match fixing. Two things are evident from this development that --in politics there are no saviours and deceit is part of politics. It’s time the trumpet section stopped their mindless accolades and woke up to reality. http://www.heraldgoa.in/newpage.php?month=5day=23year=2012catid=15

[Goanet] Panchayat election 2012: Defeated Mayem candidate to challenge results in court
-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM: In an unusual situation, a defeated candidate from Ward 7 in Haldanwadi-Mayem wants to challenge the election results in court after claiming that three votes went missing from the ballot box. Addressing a press conference here, Vrunda Mayekar from Mayem had contested the recent panchayat polls on May 16 and had lost by barely two votes against Veena Chodankar. Veena Chodankar had polled 315 votes, followed by Vrunda Mayekar (316) and Ankita Mandrekar (29). In all, 680 voters from the ward had exercised their franchise and 17 votes were rejected. Besides this, there were five postal ballots, of which four were in favour of Veena Chodankar and one was in favour of Vrunda Mayekar. When the counting was done, we found 677 votes in the ballot box and I was leading by one vote. The five postal ballots made the difference and I lost by one vote, Vrunda Mayekar said. What matters is that there were in all 680 votes as per Form 19, which was issued to us, but in reality we got only 677 votes. There were three votes missing from the ballot box which made a big difference, she added. I had alerted Returning Officer Chandrakant Shetkar of the missing votes, but he ignored it. We complained about the missing votes and sought a re-counting but he denied our plea and replied that if there are three votes missing they cannot do anything in the matter. Three missing votes have made all the difference and it is injustice to us and we have now decided to challenge the decision and election in court, said Mayekar.

[Goanet] The tale behind the tail (Response by Melvyn Fernandes)
Dear Mervyn It is always good to meet you on or off goanet, as I have stated before our people are like magnets where like poles repel, it is in our genes, hence I do not expect to start an argument. As you maybe aware, Goan people do not tell the right story but want to know everything, I prefer to deal with facts. There is an English saying Gentlemen in Rank, Empty in Bank, the English administrators (Bwana Kubas) from colonial East Africa are different from the local native population in the United Kingdom and probably took up residence in better class areas, such as a Bwana Karani as yourself. I wonder if they missed their shamba boys? I do not believe you did not encounter the racism that the majority of us did, we were called Pakis (wogs) and abused and spat at on the way to and from work, our school children had similar experiences. The newspapers actively encouraged race hate to increase sales and our people at work just got on with their jobs to earn their living. (Today, this is classed as a hate crime and can be recorded with the police). This was also a time when the working week was Monday to Friday, unlike the 24 hour working culture of today, everything was shut with our people having nothing to do other than meet, greet, socialise and dance to Goan music under chandeliers taking their troubles away. This was also the beginning of successful day time events by village organisations (still continuing to this day in the London area) as it was safer to travel on public transport in daylight. English people migrating to Canada were called Limeyes, Paki bashing was also an amusement there, all because of the colour of our skin. Over the years, our Indian cousins became employers while most of the Goan population are still employees despite having excelled in the professions. Among our people, GOASCORRI was formed GOA-Standing Committee on Race Relations and Immigration to monitor these events, one achievement I can remember is together with the Indian Workers Union based in Southall representations were made to Home Secretary William Whitelaw on virginity testing on brides from India, at least one woman was humiliated at Heathrow before a stop was put to this. I can't remember if this was before or after the Southall riots when you could do the police a favour by beating yourself up. Now, by kind favour of goanet, I respond to your posting, here goes: 1. Discrimination in the job market In The Cambridge Survey of World Migration, the chapter on The Migration of East African Asians to the UK on page 336 this is what it says (NOTE the words racial exclusionism at work in every facet of life in Britain): Quote: However Robinson (1993) has undertaken such a piece of work using national data-sets measuring standard indicators of socio-economic status for the whole East African Asian minority in the UK. He noted the absence of qualitative inputs to the analysis and underlined the significance of these when considering the well-being of refugee groups. His findings were that, despite the powerful forces of racial exclusionism at work in every facet of life in Britain, the national profile of the group had changed considerably between the early 1970s and the mid-1980s despite the deepest recession the country had seen since the 1930s. East African Asians had acquired better formal qualifications than their Indian or white British counterparts, were over- represented in self-employment, had transported their socio-economic profile more rapidly than either of the other two groups, were found in better accommodation than were Indians, and had achieved all of this without the secondary migration which was such a feature of the subsequent Vietnamese arrivals. Unquote Vaughan Robinson has also written Marching into the Middle Classes? The Long Term Resettlement of East African Asians in the UK which has the following abstract (NOTE the words despite the exclusionary barriers erected by racism): Quote: This paper uses a range of national quantitative data to assess the long-term resettlement of East African Asians in Britain. It argues that they have made considerable material progress in the UK despite the exclusionary barriers erected by racism. Unquote Readers can find these using their search engine. 2. Culture of bribery As you have indicated you are an avid reader of Goan Voice UK, so you will already be familiar with the current bribery issue which is being investigated in Swindon. 3. Property value of houses falling when coloureds moved in If you go to the website www.movinghere.org.uk/galleries/histories/asian/settling/settling.htm and scroll down to housing this is what it says: Quote: Early post-war South Asian migrants faced prejudice in finding private rented accommodation and council housing. A survey by Willesden Council of press advertisements for accommodation in the local press showed that 90 per cent of

[Goanet] Bicholim youth form vigilante teams to curb burglaries
-- Samir Umarye *May 23, 2012* BICHOLIM: Desperate times call for desperate measures and residents of Nanora-Bicholim have decided to take law into their own hands in a novel manner. With burglaries and robberies on the rise in the village, concerned residents have formed youth teams for night patrol duties in the village. The spate of thefts began some two months ago when burglars broke into the Sateri temple in the village. There was also an attempt made at the Shantadurga temple. Soon, two houses in the village were burgled when family members were asleep in the house, said Amit Falari of Nanora. Barely few days after the theft in the temple, two houses belonging to Ashok Narvekar and Vinod Azgaonkar were also burgled. There are several such burglaries reported in the village, he added. Residents from Pistewada, Warchawada, Bhatwad, Usap and Khanolkarwada in Nanora spend anxious moments at night amid constant fear of being targeted by burglars or robbers. Claims by a woman from the village to have seen the culprits have added fuel to the fire. There is a rumour that a woman from the village has seen masked culprits move in groups. It is surprising that when police patrols one side, culprits strike at some other place and they are always one step ahead of the police, remarked another resident. Unhappy with the performance of law enforcement agencies, youth in the village have decided to undertake night patrol duties in the village. Armed with sticks and torchlights, the youth have formed different teams and tour the village at night. We have formed groups to patrol the village and we confront any suspicious person found in the village at night, explained newly elected panch, Bablo Gaonkar. Justice, if necessary, is quick and effective, with the youth teams trashing those persons found moving suspiciously in the village. While the exercise has deterred suspicious persons in the village at night, the experiment has backfired on a few occasions. While the youth are doing a good job in protecting our village, there have been instances when some innocent people have been thrashed at night. Few nights ago, two persons who happened to enter the village at night were beaten up by a youth on night patrol, admitted a resident on condition of anonymity. When contacted, Bicholim police confirmed about the thefts in Nanora and informed that they have stepped up patrolling in the village. But residents are not convinced by these assurances and, instead, prefer to rely on their youth brigade to ensure security in the village. http://www.epaperoheraldo.in/Details.aspx?id=5255boxid=161751343uid=dat=5/23/2012

But I heard that they had to run away as an ancestor had the audacity to ride his horse through a Catholic procession - how far this is true, I have no idea, but a plague seems to be more plausible. Dear Goanet readers Weddings for Catholics is a big event and a big part of our culture. Traditionally we played music till everybody went home happy after they exercised their feet! This tradition went for years till this alien law of sound pollution stopped it. A lot of things may be good for hindustan, but not for goyenkars who are slowly forced to give up many things they enjoyed for years. We needs our traditions to be preserved. Now it is become a fashion by our modern day hactivists to complain about anything under the sun. Tourists can have demarcated zone to enjoy their music without disturbing their neigbours. Most tourist places around the world have such facilities for tourists and if we still want to make Goa as a major Tourist Destination, we cannot implement regressive measures!

I wonder how well India is prepared to defend its borders, given all the scandals relating to things military. China already appears to have something akin to stealth fighters - might be old technology, as this article says - http://www.smartplanet.com/blog/thinking-tech/chinas-stealth-fighter-gets-lethal-re-design/11640?tag=nl.e098 , but then Americans are not known to be particularly generous in their appraisal of technology foreign to them. Editor of Marathi daily under court scanner for ‘scuttling’ graft probe An editor of a popular multi-edition Marathi newspaper has been involved in using threats and complainants to scuttle legal proceedings in a case involving misappropriation of public funds, a Goa court has said. The startling observations were made by special sessions judge Nutan Sardessai in her order allowing complainants Kashinath Shetye and Ketan Govekar, incidentally both Right to Information (RTI) activists, to intervene in the anticipatory bail case of an ex-committee member of an educational trust that has been accused of misappropriating Rs 21 lakh of public funds. “The powerful and politically connected persons of the School Trust/Society and the editor of Lokmat, Raju Nayak, either flexed their muscle to instil fear in their minds or otherwise tried to entice or lure them with promises of rewards in the event they comply in order to scuttle the legal proceedings,” Sardessai said in her order, which has come as a shocker for the media fraternity here. “The problem of misappropriation of public funds in Goa is on the rise, a threat of immeasurable gravity, threatening the future of the Government and the society and much more so when an educational establishment, teachers and officials of the police of the State are inextricably entangled in corruption to protect them and to facilitate their functioning. The interveners are receiving threats periodically on phone to withdraw the application. Even the editor of Lokmat, Raju Nayak is involved,” Sardessai further said. The order also states that two complainants had not only been threatened and induced, but also harassed, put “under private surveillance” and were “constantly followed”. “The authorities concerned for extraneous reasons and/or for illegal benefit/gratification from the proceeds are turning a blind eye to the illegalities and also to their complaint. The police are pressurized into inaction which is apparent from their refusal to act since 2009 and hesitating to arrest powerful politicians who are in fact the primary accused in the matter,” the court further said. Sawant, an ex-committee member of the trust running the Shri Durga English School of Pernem, 30 kms from here, had filed for anticipatory bail after a criminal complaint accused trust officials of misappropriating Rs 21 lakh from a Rs 36 lakh Government loan. Lokmat is a popular Marathi daily which runs several editions in Maharashtra, including one in Goa. When asked for comment on the court order, Lokmat’s group editor Dinkar Raikar did not respond.

[Goanet] CONTROVERSY: Truth of Cortalim is in the past (editorial, Herald)

[Goanet] The Christian Secular Forum -deeply disturbing
I had no idea who the CSF was until the recent controversry. True, I would receive their newsletter but my computer is quite smart and routinely files this under junk mail. Today, I visited their website which is very disturbing indeed. It is a slap in the face of all progressive Christians. Its idea of what Christianity is takes Christians back a few good decades - like all blue-blooded, self-appointed, conservative fringe groups. Among the people it targets are homosexuals, which truly causes me more offence than a Cross miracle being debunked, for while I care not for water dripping from a Cross, I care deeply for several of my close friends who happen to be homosexuals. Let me at the onset say, that the CSF does not speak for Christianity. It speaks for itself. It is now time for well meaning Christians to challenge the CSF as the spokesperson for Christianity. I would rather let the Church be a spokesperson. I call upon the Church to look into the workings of the CSF. Coming to the case of Edamaruku. To me, it is no different from that of MF Hussain. Both are issues of freedom of thought and expression. We cannot constantly live in fear of hurting sensibilities. The issue of religion has to recede into the private domain and not infringe on the public. And lastly, where are the progressive Christian voices in all this? We should have been the ones to debunk miracles. Are we really depending on sewage water to restore faith? If so, then we are a long way from Salvation itself. For the first time in a very long time, I feel ashamed of being Christian. Best, selma

Re: [Goanet] Sanal ani CSF (final ....I hope)
Continuing this interesting discussion further, let me point out how a religious loyalty/political campaign in Goan forums has propagated the following falsehoods, either explicitly or by implication: 1. That the dripping statue was never claimed to be an unexplained miraculous phenomenon at any time by the people who filed the criminal law suit against Sanal. 2. That Sanal's offense was not his blasphemy of exposing the fake miracle, but the hurt feelings from some unproven extraneous statements that he has alleged to have made. 3. Those who file a criminal complaint under this law mean to use it, not as a blasphemy law, but as a hate speech law. The following direct quote of the general secretary of the CSF, which has filed one of the criminal lawsuits, and mass emailed that crappy disingenuous newsletter that was recycled in this forum over and over again by one of its apologists, clearly demonstrates that this guy believed that the dripping statue was an abnormal phenomenon with no plausible explanation just because it was captured on TV, and providing a natural scientific explanation for it was therefore blasphemy. QUOTE Joseph Dias, from the Catholic-Christian Secular Forum, a national activist community group, has labeled his statements on the statue intolerable. His remarks were blatantly false, Dias said. The abnormal phenomenon was captured live on TV and the media for two days and no plausible explanation could be found as to why the crucifix was dripping with water. This was blasphemy, lies and defamation. Not that the discussion was not interesting, BUT because it was tangential, unworthy of being called a discussion (because of the intransigent positions taken by individuals who differed with each other) and truly AWFULLY FORMATTED for anyone to follow without Panadol.. As far as I am concerned, the discussion was totally useless and was doing nothing to bring about any understanding. Allow me please to (very briefly) restate my points: 1: Individuals like Sanal, Salazare and organizations like the CSF are very useful for the purposes of keeping people (besides themselves) in check. 2: These useful but unaccountable folks should NEVER be allowed to supersede those individuals (i.e. govt officials incl judges elected officials) who are answerable to the population by way of Judicial Review or Electoral Approval/Rejection. 3: Any other way, and we have a recipe for unaccountable nutty folks running amok - and the resultant breakdown of a democratic system. 4: IF Sanal has accused the clergy of presenting this miracle for the purpose of funds (I am paraphrasing here), he needs to provide the proof for this OR withdraw it. The ENTRAPMENT claim ignored the principle of balance of power between a normally powerful state authority and an individual with limited or zero authority. 5: Even if Sanal refuses to withdraw it, the members of the Church would do well to move ahead. Are you not the folks who preach turn the other cheek? Now Sanal Edamaruku is accused by Catholic groups in Mumbai of breaking the Indian Penal Code, which outlaws “deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings.” Mr. Edamaruku is facing blasphemy charges after he claimed water dripping from a statue of Christ in Mumbai was not miraculous but the result of a badly plumbed toilet, and designed to make money from visiting pilgrims, but church authority says no money has been collected at the shrine. Edamaruku says “ I believe in absolute freedom of expression in any free society people should have the freedom to ridicule to criticize or to be ridiculed. That should be guaranteed in any civil society,” he said. But he is misusing what he believes to hurt the religious sentiments of others. “This is the first time I have had cases filed against me… I don’t want unexpected people to come and attack me, so only close friends know where to find me,” Mr. Edamaruku told India Real Time. Marshall Mendonza wrote: Birds of a feather flock together. Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge. Marshall, I agree with you, ignorance does father confidence. As a teenager, growing up in socialist Tanzania, there were many a time when I went to church only to be told by the priests that they had orders from the Govt that there was to be no kissing of the cross, etc. These orders, funnily enough, usually came during or close to Holy Week. Tanzania had outbreaks of cholera every few years. The govt wanted to control the spread of the disease and thus issued those orders whenever there was an outbreak. I remember thinking at the time, What a bunch of govt idiots. Don't they know that God will never spread a disease from the kissing of the feet of Christ on the cross? Bottom line is that God does not spread disease. Humans do. One of the quickest ways to catch a disease is by getting in contact with the body fluids of an infected person. I think you will agree with me that the Govt of Tanzania was correct. To stop the spread of an infectious disease, they had to stop the strange habits of the religious. 'Belief' had to be superseded by the knowledge of those who specialize in containing the spread of infectious diseases. Quite frankly, Sanal Edumaraku has done the residents of Mumbai a favour. He showed exactly what was dripping from the cross. If anything, you should be saluting him for sharing his knowledge. Mervyn201212
[Goanet] Fw: An Open Letter to the CSF
- Forwarded Message - From: Carvalho elisabeth_...@yahoo.com To: csfp...@gmail.com csfp...@gmail.com; cec...@vsnl.net cec...@vsnl.net Sent: Monday, May 21, 2012 4:38 PM Subject: An Open Letter to the CSF Dear Christian Secular Forum, cec...@vsnl.net csfp...@gmail.com I am calling this an open letter because I shall be posting it on various forums, some predominantly Goan Catholic, so that we may dialogue. You do not owe me a response, although one would be appreciated, which I can also share on these forums. I currently live in London and as such was not familiar with the CSF or its activities. It is only the recent controversial case of Sanal Edamaruku which drew my attention to your organization. This led me to investigate your website and what I found there was most shocking. I shall enumerate below some of the instances of offense on your website. 1. Anti-Islamic propaganda I was appalled to find a certain video on your website which encourages deep xenophobia and targets the Muslim community. Such propaganda dehumanizes people based on their religion, creates a sense of siege and worst of all demonizes them. I append below the link to this deeply offensive video which features on your website. http://www.myspace.com/video/vid/63011019 2. Homophobic propaganda Linking homosexuality to pedophilia is disturbing. No civilized society thinks like this. This is the domain of fringe groups who fall outside the realm of all this is modern, progressive and forward thinking. You demonizing a section of society, and may I add a section of Christian society, in this lewd manner is most undignified. I append below this link featured on your website. http://www.thecsf.org/pdfs/homo-abuse.pdf 3. Anti-abortion propaganda Like all right-wing groups, hence it doesn't surprise me that you should launch an initiative to curtail the rights of women. There might be a multitude of reasons why women feel compelled to take these decisions. Your need to make them feel like mass murderers is unjustified and offensive. If you insist that you are a secular forum then you must let your personal religious feelings remain in the private sphere and not let it encroach onto the public domain in matters such as reproductive rights. I am unable to append the Powerpoint presentation on your website. 4. Anti-free speech I understand that your organisation was at the forefront in suppressing individual freedom of thought in India. I quote from your website. The CSF besides other espousing a number of Christian activist causes, was also majorly responsible for Da Vinci Code being released late in India, getting it banned in some places and allowing it to be released with a prominent Disclaimer. Angels Demons seems to be even more diabolic… read on decide. If you don't mind, I would rather make up my own mind as to what I chose to watch and what I chose to reject. I am a fully grown adult and do not need censorship of this sort to assist me in my decision making process. Your suppression of free thought and free speech makes the name of your organisation an oxymoron. 5. The general aesthetics of your website Christianity is a religion of great visual and sensory beauty. We are the recipients of some of the most beautiful Christian art and music in the world. Hence, I find it odd that your website is dominated by gruesome imagery of Crucifixion and that too some bizarre human reenactment of this Crucifixion, creating an overall image of a religion in turmoil, pain, disarray and general mayhem. This is not the Christianity, I learnt on my mother's knee. To me, Christianity has always meant the serenity of a quiet Church and the solace of its private conservations with Christ. I am quite surprised that so many of the links you provide on your website come from Evangelical organizations based in the US. Might I inform you, that these Evangelical organizations are the most regressive organisations in the US. They are radically racist, deeply xenophobic and hideously conservative. They back governments that declare war at the drop of hat and believe in such nonsense as a literal interpretation of the Bible including the Creation story, debunking scientific evidence to the contrary. All the above is your prerogative, though, in a free world. You are free to chose to believe in the nonsense that you espouse. What boggles the mind is that you should file a case against Edamaruku denying him the right to be offensive when you yourself are truly and deeply offensive to progressive Christians. I have little doubt that you have a noble agenda. That you want to protect Christianity. But I have great reservations about your methods. They disturb me. And they should rightfully disturb all well meaning Christians. As a Christian, I implore you to drop your case against Edamaruku. I implore you to take away the offensive videos and links you feature on your website and
Re: [Goanet] Support Sanal Edumaraku
Marshal, Are you talking about yourself? If I recall correctly, it is you who constantly wishes to portray the christians as a persecuted and threatened minority in India that is in the midst of the evil hindu hoards. It is also interesting that you only seem to engage in your verbal flame throwing against individuals with non christian sounding names (such as Santosh). On a side note, it is a real pity that organizations such as the Christian Secular Forum (CS?F) continue to bring such disrepute to the mostly moderate christian community in India, by their incitement of hate against gays, their attempts to muzzle free speech via judicial means (the Sanal case) as well as extrajudicial means (threatening violence during the showing of the DaVinci Code) and their seeming intolerance towards peoples of other faiths and view points. Marlon - Original Message - From: Marshall Mendonza mmendonz...@gmail.com When exposed for his ignorance, the poster develops a persecution complex. What's new? We have seen it all. Regards, Marshall *Repeated attempts have been made by the author of the post appended below to communalize this issue and garner cheap sympathy from co-religionist partisans by invoking Biblical quotes and associating me with right-wing Hindu extremists such as Bal Thackeray. A Thackeray reference has also been insinuated in this discussion by GA* Noronha. Despite these shenanigans, it is very refreshing to note that there is a broad agreement among secular-minded Goans in several Goan cyberforums on this issue. They are strongly opposed to the blasphemy law and the tactics used by right-wing religious fanatics in prosecuting and inciting hatred against Sanal Edamaruku. Cheers, Santosh *
[Goanet] Prof Noel Flores on Wikipedia
It would be a great service to Goanet for FN, Gabriel Figueiredo, Alfred Tavares and Joel to contribute to setting up a Wikipedia page for Prof Flores. Prof Flores on YouTube in a duo both singing and dancing (see GoanVoice) at Olmstead Ave in the Bronx, New York City in 2011 seemed so oblivious of the cancer that was afflicting him. Looking much younger than his 76, he seemed just like an unpretentious next door Goan neighbor performing impromptu in a Goa village church hall after a tot of feni to provide the spirit. Roland. [Goanet] Goanet Reader: Goa is interesting from the historical, artistic and sociological points of view -- Paulo Varela Gomes (FN)
Goa is interesting from the historical, artistic and sociological points of view -- Paulo Varela Gomes -- GOA, SEEN FROM THE OUTSIDE -- Paulo Varela Gomes says he has lived five lives. As a child, until nine, was his first life. Then his parents were arrested as a result of a failed revolution against Salazar's regime. My father was seriously bullet-injured and spent six years in prison, and my mother, two. I became an adolescent at my grand-fathers house. This was the beginning of my second life, largely resulting from political events (although I was also a hippie, hitch-hiked across Europe, attended rock-festivals, the usual stuff), he explains. Readers here would of course know him as the friendly, even popular, Delegate of Fundacao Oriente, in Fontainhas. But earlier he had also been involved in the student's movement against the dictatorship and the colonial war, was arrested as were many others (but spent only three weeks in jail). After the 1974 revolution, this second life of his continued: he managed to finish a degree in history, but mostly was a teacher's union leader and a card-carrying member of the Communist party. In his fourth life, he left a position as a teacher, did several things -- being an art critic, journalist, pop music writer, author and presenter of two television documentaries (one of which about the Portuguese in India), left the Communist party, did a post-graduation in art history, started teaching architectural history at the university of Coimbra, curated an international exhibition... and became the second delegate of Fundação Oriente in Goa in 1996. His fifth and present life began when he left Goa in 1998 to complete his PhD and become a full-fledged academic, only interrupting his academic life in 2006 when he came to Goa as delegate of Fundação Oriente for the second time. And now, I am preparing myself to enter my sixth life: early retirement and doing... Who knows, only the future will tell, he told Frederick Noronha in an interview. Excerpts: FN: You spent two fairly long stints in Goa. What did you appreciated the most about in this region? The extraordinary kindness of its ordinary people and of part of its elite, and the extraordinary resilience of all of those who did not live up on democracy, sustainable development and the beauty of Goa. FN: As far as Goan attitudes go, what upsets you the most? First, the fact that, like in other countries (eg Portugal), for fear of the unknown, people do not manage to shake off bad politicians. Second, the self-delusions that maintain Goa on the disaster path (like the idea that it is uniquely beautiful with its pristine beaches, etc, etc). Third, the way people sometimes simply give in to thugs in high places or in the streets. FN: How do Goan attitudes contrast, in your view? People, considered collectively, act pretty much the same way everywhere. We all belong to one species. My answer to your first question highlights what I think is different in Goa. FN: What are the positive things about the working atmosphere in Goa, and that back home (Coimbra)? In Portugal, conditions are extremely difficult from the economic point of view and it is very hard to spot any positive thing. This is true, in particular because the politics put in practice to deal with the crisis will do nothing but make it a lot worse. Without mincing words: Portugal is a country on the verge of economical and social collapse. As for Goa, three highly positive aspects: the excitement of change, the will to resist un-sustainable change, the eagerness to learn and do better. FN: Where do you see Goan architecture headed? There are good architects and planners, good buildings and neighbourhoods, but concerns about harmony between human needs and environmental equilibrium are not dominant. On the contrary, 90% of what is built in Goa is very bad from all points of view and will have a disastrous effect upon the territory's future. FN: What do you see as Goa's strengths and weaknesses in this field? Strengths: tradition, a good architectural college, some good practitioners. Weaknesses: the building industry and its indifference to harmony and sustainability, the disastrous territorial governance, the thoughtless imitation of building types and building solutions unfit for Goa. FN: At this point of time, what do you see Goa as having to contribute to the outside world, if anything? I still think Goa is one of the more interesting territories to observe from the historical, artistic and sociological points of view due to the specific effects of
[Goanet] Ode to Noel Flores
Please post this article and poem on Professor Noel do Carmo Flores on Goanet. Sincerely, Anthony (Antonio) Gomes, MD On Saturday, the 19th of May, 2012, Noel do Carmo Flores (Emeritus Professor at the University of Music in Vienna) passed away in Vienna, Austria. The funeral will take place on the 30th of May at 2:00 pm (14:00), in Vienna, at the Zentralfriedhof, where people like Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert, and Strauss have found their resting place. He was born in Siolim, Goa, lived in Panjim in his youth, and studied piano mostly in Spain and Vienna. He was a highly acclaimed pianist and a Master Teacher. He contributed significantly in the improvement of anatomical and spiritual movements, introducing Yoga techniques into classical piano playing. He was much sought after as a teacher in Vienna, both by European and international students. His students won prizes at International Piano Competitions, became renowned teachers international recording performing artists. He held master-classes in Austria, United Kingdom, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Japan and Korea. He was often invited as a member of jury at international competitions held at Leeds, Vienna, Tel-Aviv (Rubinstein Competition), Leipzig (Bach Comp.), South Africa, Germany, Italy, Chile, Spain, Portugal and Greece. In 1997 he was awarded the grand silver medal for his outstanding services to the State of Austria. To me he was a wonderful bother-in-law whose company I cherished and whose humility and joy-de-vivre, not withstanding his musicality and awesome artist talents, was always a breath of fresh air. I fondly remember the wonderful times we had together with my then wife Marina Flores, his youngest sister, in our family re-unions in Vienna, Portugal, Goa and New York. During one of his visit to Goa after an absence of many years, he played for the family (Mother: Leucadia; Father: Bento Manuel. Siblings: The late Marina Gomes, Filomena Dulio Ribeiro, Antonio, Jeorge and Victor Flores; Judith, Ralph, Ruth, Alvaro, and Cosme Flores) at his home in Panjim. In the poem, “Ode to Noel Flores,” I try to capture that rare poignant moment. Ode to Noel Flores His family requests—they hadn’t heard His compelling music for ages. He steps forth, tall and lithe On the piano he sits, apologetically— It’s no Steinway or a Bechstein Some old piano that’s lost its name Unworthy of his fame. He hesitates, Turns his head side to side The nose flares; the cheekbones elongate Droplets of sweat gather on forehead The eyes open and close, the light dims Head of hair, white strands sparkle The muscles tense, relax, the hands move Fingers flutter in the rarefied night air Liszt, Rachmaninoff, and Chopin Notes flow: Like water over pebbles in a stream Ripples in a shallow lake of fire Snow- flakes on quartz and saphire Dewdrops on emerald lotus leaves Notes resound: Like sheets of rainfall on mountain tops Gushing diamonds over waterfalls The rush of a sudden thunderstorm The tremolo of wild bird wings The final gust of autumn wind. A sudden silence— He stands tall, bows, A shy smile Crosses his radiant face. His mother, father, his siblings, Their faces light up in a daylight dream Like pilgrims in a fable A moment’s joy dims away the world. Bravo! Encore! Bravo! Re: [Goanet] Goanet Reader-Debate: There is no evidence of a Goan dream in the UK (Melvyn Fernandes)
I am impressed with both MM's perspective of the early life of the Goan immigrant to the UK. Like Mervyn, I found the transition pretty seamless, but I know it was not easy for everyone. I am indebted to both writers for providing worthwhile insights rather than the banal videos I have seen recently. Cyprian Fernandes skipfer at live.com.au
[Goanet] Statement of Shri Eduardo Faleiro at his Press briefing on May 22, 2012
STATEMENT OF SHRI EDUARDO FALEIRO AT HIS PRESS BRIEFING (May 22, 2012) Over the last two months, I along with Adv.Bernard d’Souza visited several villages and towns in the districts of Kolhapur and Belgaum to meet the people of Goan origin settled in those areas. In the 16th and 17th centuries thousands of Goans, both Hindus and Christians, left Goa to escape religious and cultural persecution, epidemics and continuous wars and settled in the neighbouring areas of North Karnataka and South Maharashtra. They speak Marathi or Kannada and also Konkani and visit regularly their temples and churches in Goa. Most of the people who migrated to the neighbouring areas of Maharashtra are called ‘ Bardezkars’ since their ancestors migrated mostly from Bardez. Their surnames in school records and revenue registers appear as ‘ Bardezkar’. The descendants of those settled in Karnataka are called ‘ Konkanes’ because they speak Konkani at home along with Kannada. Hindus, Muslims and Christians in those areas participate in each other’s religious festivals, weddings and other gatherings and there is no difference in their social life and food habits. - We have taken steps to write the history of Goans migration to the neighbouring regions in those early centuries. - Many of those persons are Christians and every year a large number of them come walking for 3-4 days to attend the feast of St. Francis Xavier but when they arrive at Old Goa they do not have a reasonable place to rest. - We have formulated a Youth Exchange Programme for youth of Goan origin in the neighbouring areas to visit Goa and get acquainted with their roots and different facets of life here. Similarly Goan youth will visit the neighbouring areas to acquaint themselves with the people of those areas. This Youth Exchange Programme is intended for the young generation to contribute to and promote understanding, goodwill and co-operation between the three States involved. In the first Youth Exchange Programme, about 10 Goan youths in the age group of 18 to 30 years will visit villages and towns in the districts of Kolhapur and Belgaum from June 23rd to June 30th next. Similarly, youth of Goan origin in the neighbouring States will be invited to visit Goa in the month of November. I now request my colleagues Adv.Bernard d’Souza, Shri Devraj Bardezkar and others to elaborate on the subjects I have just mentioned. Eduardo Faleiro loksevagoa at gmail.com
[Goanet] G.O.A. ROLLING TROPHY: Goa Maroons, Navelim YC, AVC, and Skynet Raiders in Semis
G.O.A. ROLLING TROPHY Match day 6 – Quarter finals Goa Maroons, Navelim YC, AVC CA, and Skynet Raiders in Semis Action shot - Skynet Raiders verus Gulf Cable Justifying their direct seeding into round two, Goa Maroons and Navelim YC took their expected places in the last four while AVC CA and Skynet Raiders were the other two teams to qualify for the semifinals, in the 18th edition of the prestigious G.O.A Rolling Trophy organized by Goan Overseas Association (Goa Maroons) under the auspices of KIFF and sponsored by Bassem International Trading Company at the MOH ground, Shuwaikh (Kuwait). In the day’s first match, last year’s finalist Navelim YC overcame a strangely subdued DHL FC 2-0. The ever dependable Alfred Pires put Navelim in front when he scored from close range in the first half while star forward Cruzedio Rodrigues put the game beyond DHL FC with his usual cool and clinical finish in the second half. Midfielders Terence and Roland played their hearts out for DHL but with no luck and with some erratic shooting by their forwards, could not get past Adrian deputing for Britto in the Navelim goal who did well to keep a clean sheet. Navelim YC made three substitutions in the second half, notable one being veteran Gasper Crasto who immediately made his presence felt in the Navelim half line. Navelim Youth Centre won 2-0 In the second quarter final, a depleted C.R.C Chinchinim without the brilliant Gomes brothers and goalkeeper Antonio who are all on vacation, fielded only nine players against defending champions Goa Maroons and the outcome of the game was easily foreseeable when the redoubtable Zelito Cardozo scored for Goa Maroons in the very third minute of the game from an excellent cross by Bonny Niasso. Prolofic scorer Steven Rodrigues added two more and Bonny Niasso scored the fourth from a scorching 25 metres drive to make it 4-0 before the end of the first half. Goa Maroons - winners In the second half, using the shield of soccer law three, C.R.C Chinchinim players started falling like nine pins and the referee had no choice but abandon the match, as they did not have the minimum number of seven players on the field, and the match was awarded to Goa Maroons. In the last match of the day, Gulf Cable flattered only to deceive after taking the lead through Sinu Thomas in the 15th minute and then going on to lose 1-7 to Skynet Raiders. Gulf Cable were unfortunate to lose Abdul Kumarakkttil to a second bookable offence and Skynet Raiders taking advantage of an extra man in the extremely hot conditions scored at will in the second half through Sathyaraj Mohan (2), Doruesh Naik (2), Maleston Dias, Reazer Dias and Dominic Fernandes. Skynet Raiders won 7-1 Gulf Cable lost 1-7 to Skynet Raiders Schedule for semifinal matches:- Coming Friday, 25th May 2012, AVC CA take on Navelim Youth Centre at 6:30 am, followed by Goa Maroons versus Skynet Raiders at 8:00 am Julio Cardoso- Kuwait Posted by Julio Cardoso http://juliozinia.blogspot.com/ [This report is first published in Arab Times of today's date] www.arabtimesonline.com
Re: [Goanet] Goa news for May 7, 2012
Tamil Nadu has been ranked No 1 by the Economic Freedom Rankings for the States of India[1] Possessing the fourth largest economy (2010-11) of $ 98 billion among states in India,[2] Tamil Nadu is also the second most industrialised state next to Maharastra.[3][4] As of 2010-11 Tamil Nadu had a Per Capita GDP of $ 1,622, the sixth highest in India. States that have out-shined Tamil Nadu are Goa ($ 2,949), Haryana ($ 2,052), Maharashtra ($ 1,855), Sikkim ($ 1,804)).Tamil Nadu ranks third in foreign direct investment approvals (cumulative 1991-2002) of 225,826 million ($5,000 million), next only to Maharashtra 366,024 million ($8,100 million)) and Delhi 303,038 million ($6,700 million). The State's investment constitutes 9.12% of the total FDI in the country.[5] Unlike many other states, the economic resources are quite spread out, rather than concentrated in a small industrialised area.According to the 2001 Census, Tamil Nadu has the highest level of urbanization (43.86%) in India, accounting for 6% of India's total population and 9.6% of the urban population.[6] Tamil Nadu has a network of about 110 industrial parks and estates offering developed plots with supporting infrastructure.[7] Also, the state government is promoting other industrial parks like Rubber Park, Apparel Parks, Floriculture Park, TICEL Park for Biotechnology,[8] Siruseri IT Park, and Agro Export Zones among others. Tamil Nadu has the largest number of Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in India.[9] Annual Plan outlays have increased by a record 75% from 52,000 million ($1,100 million) in 2001-2 to 91,000 million ($2,000 million) in 2005-6. agnelo lobo alobo at trinetae.com
Re: [Goanet] DEATH: Prof Noel Flores, Austria, who made history abroad in the field of music....
Hi Alfred, I thank you, Gabriel and all others, who have responded to my request for information on Noel Flores. We did not know much about Flores, several years ago, when I had mentioned about him in the Village Voice article in Goa Today. All that I had seen then was the house at Vaddi in Siolim, which seems to be suffering from lack of maintenance. Of course, I have not been in its vicinity lately. Anyway, today we know so much about the great Goan musician, through friends like you. Thanks again. Regards. Joel.
