List future
Hey all, During the extended downtime of the Elektro-based GTS list, I brought the GTS list up on a site called www.egroups.com, a free group hosting facility. I've solicited the opinions of the group members I could reach and have considered the two options. I have decided to move the list to the eGroups site. Some of the reasons for this choice are: Automatic removal of MIME encoded stuff. Much easier list management for me. :-) Group file sharing space Group shared calendar (good for organizing GTS rides) A chat room Easy to access archives A page for web links folks would like to share to the group I have asked Charlie, the admin of Elektro, to configure the mail alias, gts-1000@elektro, to reply to messages with a statement informing folks of the list change. Please share this information with your friends who are missing from our group. I would like to personally thank Charlie Smith for his willingness to host our list out of the kindness of his heart. For those who don't know him, Charlie is a long time motorcyclist and a good friend. Here are the egroups e-mail commands: To join gts1000: Send a blank message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe from a group: Send a blank message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Put your email message delivery on hold for a group: Send a blank message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Change your subscription to daily digest mode: Send a blank message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Change your subscription to individual emails: Send a blank message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Also, your account can be managed via the web at www.egroups.com, if you so choose. For those who choose not to, simply send me a direct e-mail explaining what you need done and I'll manually change your subscription status for you. For those of us to maintain GTS related web-pages, could you please either retain the link to www.arches.uga.edu/~weaver/gtsmail.html (which is updated now) or refer to the new list address. Re: List future
I'm on a list at the eGroups (for Ducati's MH900e). The list works well, they have a space for uploading of photos and even setting up calendar events. It could prove useful for sharing and meeting. The downside is they put ads in your emails. So far, it hasn't taken up much space. It's also easy to go find an old email or for a new-comer to check out previous emails to avoid restarting long strings. Probably would be most helpful if people made an effort to be sure subject headings are accurate and updated. See ya there! Re: The list?
Yeah Roger, you missed the big crash. Mike couldn't get ahold of the the list admin, so he restarted everyone on a new list server - Egroups. Now Electro list is back up and we are trying to decide to stay or go back. See this message from earlier today. -- Dave Biasotti // Fremont, CA Hey all, I finally heard back from the administrator of the elektro gts list. He was away in europe when a disk failed in the server. He is repairing the server and will have it back in a day or so. He is designing the box so that it will not die again due to a single disk failure and he is designating some local administrators to fix the server should it fail while he is traveling again. So, I put it to you, do we keep the egroups list or go back to the elektro list. We need to come to a consensus soon. Greetings everyone. My name is Doug McIntosh and I am the proud, new owner of a 1993 GTS. I live in Austin, Texas, and I've been riding my old bike, a 1985 Honda Magna V65, all over the US and Canada over the last four years. It was this touring (and riding my friend's '92 FJ1200A through the mountains of Colorado)that made me realize I needed a different bike. So, here I am, and I must say I've never seen or ridden anything like our beloved GTS. So, I look forward to seeing what happens on the list as well as meeting some of you on my "weekend" rides.. So, with basic introductions out of the way, I pose a question to you all: Does anyone have any suggestions about makes and SIZES for a bike cover? I'm not sure what size might work best. I've got a windshield (brand new OEM) on the shelf in my garage equipped with the BMW deflector. Depending on your height and whether you have a Corbin seat, this setup can put your helmet in clear air. Look at http://www.geocities.com/~raddboy/gtsmods.html to see a few pics of the setup. If you are brave, no, make that !BRAVE!, you can remove that fine scratching with a heat-gun or a torch--I don't recommend the torch and only cautiously recommend the heat gun. Folks: As most of you veterans can tell, I've been quite busy, so my time on line has greatly diminished (that's good for those who usually get a ration of smart ass remarks from me ;) ) I met with Stan Jon on a recent trip...where we rode into Parry Sound on the "normal" sport bike rally weekend. Thomas O'brian rode up the same day and we all discovered simultaneously that the rally was shifted to the 2nd weekend of July (a first...since even the Parry Sound Information booth welcomed the bikers on July 1st!) Rain showers (and partially slim tires) kept me from meeting with Thomas, but dinner with Stan Jon was "eventful" and fun!. But to keep this short, I did hit the rally the following weekend. I also rode I friend's GTS who had the deflector on his stock windshield and liked it. It did make a difference with wind noise, it seemed to place the air over my helmet making it quitter. Suggestion, Create a second list
Why doesn't someone that is interested create a second list, a trivia list of sorts, that could be a forum for idle banter and motorcycle related info that is not directly GTS? Then, those interested in social affairs have an appropriate place to meet and exchange. I know of what you speak. There have been times when I've been frustrated by the banter on here, generating the volume of mail. But it's worse on other lists. The Vmax list broke into two lists, and that's caused more problems than it's solved. Now some belong to one list, some bleong to the other, and some belong to both so we can see everything. Why? People wind up posting tech info/questions to BOTH lists. To not be on one list would be to miss some tech stuff. And then there's the extra duplication of messages: Some prople post the same question to both lists, so you wind up seeing the message threads twice. Considering how little traffic we're getting these days, I'm happy to have one list, stay in digest mode, and scroll through one message a day. -K == Kelly CashMain: 408-727-5497 Solid Data Systems FAX: 408-727-5496 2945 Oakmead Village Court [EMAIL PROTECTED] Santa Clara, CA 95051 www.soliddata.com ==

As long as we keep subject headings accurate, with the word "fluff" when appropriate, this list seems pretty good to me. If you've been on any other list, you know that this one stays on topic and has far less traffic than most. It's the only one I can stand getting in other than digest form. I would have to agree with Jay I am on 2 other email lists for my other bikes. The TDM list isn't bad about the same. But for some reason the R1 list is just full of fluff and ego bashing arguments. I would have to say we've got a good thing going here ! Darren
Re: second list fluff
One more vote to not create another list. Yes, we get some amount of fluff, but yes, it is usually identified. As for traffic levels on the list, this one is pretty light. So much so that I often leave town for a few days without unsubscribing, knowing that my inbox will handle it. Try that on any other moto-list, without being in digest. I subscribed to the Ducati list right after I bought the 900 CR, and was planning to do it in digest. When I subscribed I was busy and had to run to a meeting, so left it in non-digest until I got back. One hour later I had 135 new messages, virtually all from the Duc list. I unsubbed instantly and have never gone back--I don't have time to sort through a digest as big as that, and certainly don't want it in real time. This list has gradually gotten better at using fluff indicators, or, at a minimum, a clear RE line. As long as that's the case, no problem. I'll admit I don't open everything on this list. Phil

Re: second list fluff
Gentlemen, I was not attempting to compare our list with other lists. I am terribly confident that the fluff on any given list is proportionate to the number of units sold/subscribers to the list. That having been said, does it change the fact that the original intent of the list was GTS content, not unrelated personal information? We may be better at self regulation, but does that mean there is not room for improvement? If fluff is what keeps this list alive, then, it should be identified as such.
Re: second list fluff
Well, perhaps not fluff, but personalities are a large part of at least my enjoyment of this list. There is so much cut and dried technical information to be shared. The pleasure of motorcycle riding can bleed over into other aspects and I don't mind. Just so long as it's identified. The complication of a second list, however, would be much more of a nuisance me thinks. I just purchased a used new 93 gts 1000 with 1300 miles on it. Bought the bike from a friend in California and shipped it on the slow boat from California to my home in Maui. Looking forward to touring around the island on my new mojocycle. My ABS light blinks once in a while my friend had the Yamaha shop check out the ABS braking system and it is fine. He was told that a sensor malfunctions once in a while but in my case it doesn't hinder the ABS. Mike

Hello Everybody, Just wanted to drop a note and say Hi to you fellow gts Mike Welcome Mike. I hope you like it here. Just keep your sense of humor with you. We can get a little winter-crazy from time to time. I realize you don't have that problem, but then it is unlikely that most of us will run out of new riding roads in the near future, whereas you might! Henry S. List problems
Hey, The list had a period of downage due to a config error on the hosting machine. The administrator of that machine has corrected the problem and has engineered a fix that will prevent it in the future. GTSOWNERS LIST NEW request for errata
http://www.mbnet.mb.ca/~neelin/motorcycle/gtsowners.html Please check out your personal data in the new gtsowners.xls file available for download at the above site. Please EMAIL ME DIRECTLY at [EMAIL PROTECTED] to make any corrections. DO NOT reply to the list (or rather don't complain if I don't make corrections if you haven't sent them directly to me). I get the list in digest form and it is easy to miss bits that relate to me. 302 listings ! (probably a dozen or so former owners that I've retained but put SOLD in their comments). I'd say we've got a representative population of GTSers. Thanks Mike Weaver the admin of the GTS list for your daily behind the scenes control of the mailing list. Let the feeding frenzie begin! Robert Wilson

RE: ABS failures list
I seem to have missed a few people and even doubled up on one. Getting it sorted out finally. Make sure you use the new (303) 830 6911 fax number as per the last form I posted. The earlier number is not reliable. Make sure you clearly address faxes to me. We're up to 37 so far. I will send the letter to Yamaha by fax and regular mail later today. Cheers Joe. -Original Message- From: Loss, Joe Sent: Tuesday, November 30, 1999 8:33 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: ABS failures list The list keeps growing... # NAMELOCATION 1 Joe LossBoulder, CO 2 Thomas Keyworth Fontana, CA 3 David Young Cockeysville, MD 4 Christopher PhillipsNine Mile Falls, WA 5 Michael Cordon Danville, CA 6 Grant Gall Calgary, Alberta 7 Jeffrey Stone Suwanee, GA 8 Alan Tooraeen Camas, WA 9 Thomas Duncan Pheonix, AZ 10 Kurt FacklerMinnetrista, MN 11 Kelly Cash Sunnyvale, CA 12 Greg ChristopherSanta Cruz, CA, 13 Jason Crowley Calgary, Alberta 14 Christopher Caputo Petaluma, CA 15 Bob Burton Charlotte, NC 16 Jon Crisler Clinton, MD 17 Jay Koblenz Trabuco Canyon, CA 18 William Halley Middletown, OH 19 Terry Baker ? 20 Shawn Pearsall Fairport, NY 21 Jeff Stefl ? 22 Raul Garcia Sao Paulo, TX 23 Brian Kearney Charles Town, WV 24 Stan Bodnar Whitehouse Sta., NJ 25 Larry Ellis San Antonio, TX 26 Walt HopkinsAtlanta, GA 27 Bryan Burkinstock ? 28 Mike Karafa ? 29 Derek Hydon ? 30 Stan Thomas ? 31 Steve Giuntoli Brookfield, WI 32 Scot Gordon Santa Rosa, CA 33 Duane SuttonWarner Robins, GA 34 Andy Perry Charlotte, NC 35 Brandon Salt Lake City, UT

I faxed you an ABS failure report a while back, but didn't make the list. I guess you didn't get it. GTS Wieght was Re: fwd to list of orig (snipped) newbie gts info req
In a message dated 99-09-27 19:51:04 EDT, you write: First, welcome. Second, I must be the only one on this list who thinks his GTS is light. I come from a Concours, and let me tell you...that bike is heavy and it only weighs about 60 lbs more than the GTS. I let a friend ride mine who rides an ST1100, and he was shocked at how much lighter the GTS felt than his ST1100. Interestingly enough, when he rode a GTS in 93, he thought it was heavy, but was comparing it to his then ride of a GS1100ES. The GTS is not as flickable as a TDM, but can be ridden at a good pace. fwd to list of orig (snipped) newbie gts info req to weaver
hi. recently joined list. lurking a little to test waters, etc. i presently have a '93 yamaha tdm 850, (not a gts 1000,...yet.) i've been intrigued by the gts since learning about it about a year and a half ago, (not coincidentally about the same time i started riding.) i've heard james parker lives here in santa fe and hope someday to meet him. i just missed riding, and probably buying, a gts in albuquerque a while ago that had sat on their floor following trade-in for about three years, 'cause no one knew what to make of it. i did have a chance on a recent trip to california to ride a gts briefly and was _very_ impressed with its smoothness. one of the big draws for me is not the front end but its early success with electronic fuel injection; i have had a _ton_ of problems getting the jetting right on the tdm for our 7,000 foot elevation. i have found riding the bike to be great and much more fun than pushing it or getting stuck in the middle of no place. so efi reliability seems like it could be a big bonus. but it seems like getting one to me is still going to be a bit of a safari, which before i launch on it, i have a few concerns, and i'd value your thoughts. the bike seemed heavy and loath to flip from one tight turn to another. riding position is nice but hard hard on wrists. enormous complexity seems likely to make mechanic visits particularly painful. rarity points to fewer parts and less familiarity, not to mention _hard_ to find one in the first place. nice sounding ones, especially blue ones, are still, for me, _really_ expensive. (my wife is mid-stream in a torrent of health disasters.) the recent thread about abs difficulties makes me wonder about that and other mechanical problems that might have plagued the bikes and their owners. but for all that, boy do they seem cool. and i'm pretty smitten, so it's kind of a logistics thing. maybe this winter it will somehow seem easier and more do-able. but for now, i'm enjoying the list, but wondering how folks with more than twenty minutes on a gts feel about the good, bad, ugly and beautiful of living with one. thanks a lot, -- jim guss jim, elizabeth and pablo guss [EMAIL PROTECTED] (505) 989-1725 206 tesuque drive santa fe, new mexico 87505-3838, usa

OK, so some reactions to your comments. Yes, this puppy is heavy. That's First, welcome. Second, I must be the only one on this list who thinks his GTS is light.
