[ha-Safran]: Please evaluate the 2001 Convention in Montreal

2011-07-18 Thread Nancy Sack
Aloha, safranim ve-safraniyot,

If you attended the Montreal AJL convention but neglected to complete
an evaluation form, fear not! The form is available online at
http://www.jewishlibraries.org/main/Events/Evaluation.aspx . Your
feedback helps the convention committee plan for the future. Please
take the time to let the committee know what you think.

Thanks.

[ha-Safran]: AJL Web site logins

2011-06-15 Thread Nancy Sack
Aloha, AJL members,

A few people have asked about this recently, so it's probably a good
idea to make a general announcement...

The membership database is not yet fully operational, so your login
and password do not currently work. As soon as the database is up and
running--we're hoping very soon--you'll be able to log in, change
your password if you like, and view the online resources that are
restricted to AJL members.

Also coming soon and [Be-sha'ah tovah], you will be able to renew
your membership online through a secure server.

Next week in Montreal!

[ha-Safran]: Convention (and silent auction) countdown

2011-05-31 Thread Nancy Sack
Aloha, AJL members,

This is a reminder, in case you needed one, that the convention and
the silent auction are only a little more than three weeks away!
Donations to the silent auction are still coming in. Yay! Some of
you, however, are still holding out. Please try not to procrastinate
any longer, especially if you're thinking of hanging your name badge
from a puka-shell lei. If that isn't enough incentive, consider it a
birthday present to me. I'm one year older today than I was on this
date last year.

Thanks. See you soon.

Aloha, again,

I've been reminded that inside pages of the AJL site could also

covers, for example of AJL-award-winning titles, please share them, too.

Same rules apply...

format: jpg, png, or gif

resolution: 150 or less

Please provide brief captions and send them to me ( s...@hawaii.edu )
at your earliest convenience. Your images will become part of several

[ha-Safran]: AJL Silent Auction FAQ

2011-04-28 Thread Nancy Sack
First Annual AJL Convention Silent Auction FAQ

Who benefits from the AJL silent auction?

Proceeds from this year's auction will be divided between the Auberge
Shalom pour femmeshttp://www.aubergeshalom.org/ (the Jewish women's
shelter in Montréal) and the AJL convention stipend fund.
The auction also benefits donors and bidders by providing an occasion
to give tsedakah, have fun, and maybe even win big.

I'm not able to attend the AJL convention this year. Can I still
donate to the auction?

Yes! We are pleased to offer our exclusive silent auction shlepper
service (SASS) for those unable to join us in Montréal. Please
contact me (808-956-2648; s...@hawaii.edu) to arrange to send your
donation to a shlepper near you. Shleppers are standing by.

I can't think of anything to donate. Do you have any ideas?

Yes again! The place you live is exotic to people who live anywhere
else. Think about the specialties your city/state/province/country
has to offer, and choose something that you think will impress
bidders at the auction. Once you've decided, please download and
complete the auction donation form
http://www.jewishlibraries.org/ajlweb/conventions/convention2011/AuctionDonationForm.doc,

and send it to me (s...@hawaii.edu). Let me know if you will need a shlepper.

I've already donated items to the auction. Is there anything else I can do?

Yes! And thanks for asking! If you are attending the convention, be
sure to visit the auction area and bid early and often on the items
you like. Have your checkbooks handy and leave some room in your
luggage for your winnings.

Can I help out at the convention?

Absolutely! On Sunday afternoon, you can help us display the bounty
we receive on the auction tables. Throughout Sunday evening and
Monday morning, you can help ensure that the bidding is lively. After
the auction ends, you can help distribute items to the highest
bidders and collect their money.

Thank you. See you in Montréal.

[ha-Safran]: A Purim plea for silent auction goodies

2011-03-20 Thread Nancy Sack
Shaloha, AJLers!

We have already received a number of fabulous donations to our first
ever AJL Convention silent auction. For those of you who have been
wavering, or wondering what to donate, here are some suggestions:

  books
  CDs and DVDs
  software
  Judaica
  gift cards
  subscriptions
arts and crafts (show off and give away your original
paintings, drawings, photographs, textiles [hint to SS], etc.)
library paraphernalia (T-shirts, mugs, posters, etc.)
  other good stuff
baskets of regional and local specialties
IOUs for drinks at the bar

Your donations to the AJL silent auction help raise funds for two
good causes. Proceeds from the auction will be divided between the
Auberge Shalom pour femmes (the Jewish women's shelter in Montreal;
http://www.aubergeshalom.org/ ) and the AJL convention stipend fund.
It's a double mitzvah!

But now, there's another great reason to donate to the auction...

For a limited time, convention attendees who donate items to the
silent auction will receive a lovely Hawaiian puka shell lei,
absolutely free! Puka shell lei make much nicer badge holders than
simple lanyards or cords. If you sport a puka shell lei at the
convention, you will be the envy of all your friends. These lei are
not available in stores (on the mainland).

But wait, there's more! If you donate now, you will receive a second
puka shell lei! That's a US $0.98 value. And your lei are yours to
keep, even if you leave the convention early!

And for those of you who can't attend the convention...

Please remember that we are offering an exclusive silent auction
shlepper service (SASS), so you can avoid international shipping.
Shleppers are standing by. Please contact me (808-956-2648;
s...@hawaii.edu) to arrange to send your donation to a shlepper near you.

Hag Purim sameah!

[ha-Safran]: The first annual AJL convention silent auction

2011-03-09 Thread Nancy Sack
This year we will begin a new tradition at AJL conventions: a silent auction!

Your generous donations to the AJL silent auction can help make the
Montreal convention even more entertaining, exciting, and rewarding,
and can help raise funds for two good causes. Proceeds from the
auction will be divided between the Auberge Shalom pour femmes (the
Jewish women's shelter in Montreal; http://www.aubergeshalom.org/)
and the AJL convention stipend fund.

Suggested donations include:
 books
 CDs and DVDs
 software
 Judaica
 gift cards
 subscriptions
arts and crafts (I know there are talented creative types among
our members)
baskets of regional and local specialties (chapters may want to
organize this...)
library paraphernalia (T-shirts, mugs, posters, etc.)
 other good stuff

Auction donors will receive special mention in the program book.
Exhibitors who contribute to the silent auction will receive a
special decoration for their exhibit tables.

Please let me know what item(s) you will be donating to the auction
and provide an estimated retail value, so I can create bid sheets in
advance of the convention.

We know that shipping items from the US to Canada can be expensive,
so we are pleased to offer our exclusive silent auction shlepper
service (SASS). If you are not attending the convention but would
like to donate something to the silent auction, please contact me
(808-956-2648; s...@hawaii.edu) to arrange to send your donation to a
shlepper near you. If you are planning to attend the convention and
are willing to be a shlepper, please let me know that too.

Thanks. I look forward to seeing you in Montreal.

Shaloha, safranim ve-safraniyot,

As some of you have already noticed, the AJL Website looks a little
different today, and the links are all broken. That's because we've
just moved the site from its home of many years (at Ohio State
University) to a commercial web hosting service, and the transfer was
effected much more quickly than I'd expected. I've only uploaded a
few pages so far. Later today, when most of you are asleep, I hope to
transfer the entire site to its new server. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Thanks.

You have no idea how many requests I get for cookbooks, since almost
everyone kept cookbooks on the first floor and that was what was flooded.
My own mother is getting ready to cook for passover, and only has the
recipes that I had copies of, since she lost everything.

Could you send out a request for Jewish cookbooks for New Orleans. I would

Thank you so much for any help that you can give me in the cookbook

[Hasafran]: Jerusalem Books Pesah Newsletter

2006-04-05 Thread Nancy Sack

--- Message requiring your approval --
From: Jerusalem Books [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: [Hasafran]: Jerusalem Books Pesah Newsletter

Dear Friends,

Now that the elections festivities are over in
Israel we can get down to our holiday plans for
Passover. With a little luck, not only will we be
blessed with guests at our Seder table at the
Spitzer household in Jerusalem, but we will
celebrate Mimouna, (a Moroccan Jewish festival) a
day after the Pesah holiday in Eilat.

One of the hottest books in Israel, perhaps to
take on a long weekend, is Meir Shalev’s latest,
‘Yonah ve-Na'ar' - published by Am Oved and
little has to be said about Meir Shalev's
books. They are bestsellers and always a welcome
addition to any library. Cat.no. 59111 $22.00

In addition although, Tomy Lapid’s Shinui party
self destructed, his son Yair Lapid has come out
with another novel, “Ha-Isha
ha-Shni’ah,’Published by Keshet, softcover, 288 pages. Cat. #58612 $20.00

In the area of Holocaust, we would like to remind
those who haven’t already heard that Yossi Sarid,
(former MK and head of Meretz), wrote a book
called, ‘Pepichik,’ about a boy who survives
Auschwitz concentration camp only remembering his
‘nickname’ that his mother called him by when
they were separated and she was sent to her
death. This moving an important work of
non-fiction is a worthwhile addition to any
collection of holocaust books. Cat.no. 58622 $17.00

An important relatively new publisher worth
noting, Mazo Publishing, has come out with a new
holocaust history/memoire entitled, ‘An Odyssey
of Survival,’ by Dr. Michael Klein. It
chronicles the personal tragedy of his family
from Janosalma, Hungary through the ghetto,
deportation, Auschwitz, Budapest and
rebuilding. It contains important history
(including Camp Golleschau and ‘Oscar Schindler’s
Forced Labor Camp..), as well as insights into
Jewish Identity, Culture and Philosophy. Isbn
965-7344-06-9. Cat.# 59319 $16.00

Lastly, in this category, Tuvia Friedman, has
published a history, auto-biography, ’60 Years –
Nazi Hunter,’ published by his Institute of
Documentation in Haifa, Israel. This amazing
fighter for justice contributed to the
apprehension and prosecutions of Nazi War
criminals but equally important has been his
tireless role in the documentation and teaching
of Holocaust studies throughout his life. Cat.no. 59313 $55.00

Regarding Haggadot I would just like to note that
there is a scholarly side to this common and
popular item. In the past weeks we have seen a
Rav Kook Haggada, with intro by R’ Aviner,
published in Bet El, Cat. # 59432 $13.00 and The
Tekhelet Mordekhai Haggadah, by R’ Mordekhai
Elon, isbn 965-09-0194-9, published by Reuven
Mass, Cat # 59433 $14.00. This stream includes
many Haggadot with significant commentaries and
reflecting the customs of many Jewish communities.

We wish all of you a Happy Holiday, from all of us at Jerusalem Books.

Sincerely,

Jeff

[Hasafran]: Jewish desaparecidos

2006-04-03 Thread Nancy Sack
I thank Efraim for his cogent criticism of ASESINO, directed by Nurit
Kedar (Keidar?), which I had recommended in an earlier posting.
Having trusted the very knowledgable programers of The Toronto Jewish
Film Festival, who selected ASESINO for screening in 2003, I had no idea it
was so deeply flawed. I did see it on May 7, and it left a very strong
impression which stays with me even today. I've looked at this review:

Disappeared: A Flawed Film on Argentina's Past Blames Wrong Party,
by Noga Tarnopolsky. The Forward, May 16, 2003.
   http://www.forward.com/issues/2003/03.05.16/arts1.html

Tarnopolsky, described as a freelance writer living in Jerusalem and
a frequent contributor to the Forward... is writing a book on the
disappearance of five members of her family, completely agrees with
Efraim's comments. She notes: Research has shown that they were not
sought out specifically because of their Jewishness (the Argentine
military had the Stalinesque ambition to rid the nation of leftists,
intellectuals and thinkers - in short, anyone who could be defined as
'subversive') but were treated significantly worse than non-Jews when
in detention.

This fits with Efraim's comment that the Jewish 'desaparecidos' were
not at all 'Jewish martyrs'. They were martyrs or victims of Human
Rights violations, in the most of the cases [where they were] 'of
Jewish origin. However, I offer two points in support of my earlier
contention with which Efraim deeply disagree[s]. First, I think it
reasonable that the (mostly) young people who were disappeared came
to their beliefs in social justice and human rights in some
significant degree because of their Jewish education and/or cultural
background. Second, as Tarnopolsky says (and as has been noted in an
earlier posting) the Jewish prisoners were treated significantly
worse than non-Jews when in detention, no doubt because of the
inherent anti-Semitism of the military regime.

Tarnopolsky also confirms that Israel did in fact sell arms to the
Argentine generals for years and says that Prime Minister Shamir
explain[ed] that Argentina, like apartheid-era South Africa, was a
'devil' with which Israel found itself obliged to deal in arms in
order to guarantee the survival of its indispensable military industry.

While I find it very difficult to accept the 'realpolitik' of such
behaviour, especially considering how corrupting it can be to
national Jewish values, I was also enlightened by Tarnopolsky's
description of how the Israeli embassy developed a policy of handing
out false passports to individuals - Jewish or not - who managed to
flee detention centers or who felt their lives in danger. Israel's
embassies in Buenos Aires and in Santiago, Chile, functioned as de
facto nerve centers for those needing to escape, and in this way
hundreds of lives were saved. No other country comported itself in a
comparable manner.

Unfortunately, in her careful and nuanced review Tarnopolsky does not
comment on the film's claim that the Knesset only debated the
question of Jewish desaparecidos and the overt anti-Semitism of the
Argentinian military regime after the junta was overthrown and the
Argentinian government returned to civilian control. Perhaps this
point can be clarified by others on the list?

By the way, I hope members of the list don't think that this
discussion of the film is off-topic for Hasafran, because there may
be libraries which either already have a copy of it or that may be
considering it for purchase.

 Bernard.

[Hasafran]: author of OFF THE DERECH: WHY OBSERVANT JEWS LEAVE JUDAISM

2006-03-28 Thread Nancy Sack
From: Stuart Schnee [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: author of OFF THE DERECH: WHY OBSERVANT JEWS LEAVE JUDAISM

I am pleased to notify you that Faranak Margolese, who will be visiting
North America to speak about her new book entitled Off the Derech: Why
Observant Jews Leave Judaism. She will be visiting the Southern California
and the NY metro area.

This book looks at the phenomenon of Orthodox Jews leaving Jewish religious
observance. Based on over 500 interviews with formerly Orthodox Jews as
well as educators and Rabbis the book offers a fascinating look at a trend
which is not often looked at publicly. It is a ground breaking book and
pre-pub reactions have been overwhelmingly positive. A press release is
attached.

Rabbi Hershel Schachter, after reading Off the Derech: Why Observant Jews
Leave Judaism, wrote: The Rabbis of the Talmud understood that included in
our mitzvah to love G-d is to act and to speak in such a way as to get
others to love G-d as well. This fascinating book can serve as a Mussar
Sefer for all observant Jews regarding how to act and to speak in such a
way as not to turn others away from religious observance.

Rabbi Dr. Abraham Twerski submitted this take: Off the Derech is an eye
opener. Thousands of years ago, the prophet Isaiah
said, 'Surely you see, but you fail to know The heart of this nation is
fattened, its ears are heavy and its eyes are sealed (6:9-10).' We are
losing too many of our youth. It is high time that we open our eyes, see,
and know. You may agree with Faranak Margolese or disagree, but Off the
Derech cannot be ignored. It is mandatory reading.

Faranak Margolese, who is American and lives in Israel, will be in the US
for limited speaking events in April, May and June. She is an articulate
speaker and has received very positive responses from her audiences. She
does not charge an honorarium to speak and all proceeds from book sales go
to tzedakah.

Please contact me directly to discuss the possibility of having Ms.
Margolese in your community.

thank you,

Education Association, National PTA, and the Association of Library Service
to Children (ALSC) of ALA. D.E.A.R. Day is being heavily promoted and has
a website on which a D.E.A.R. Day Resource Kit is available. Who could
argue with encouraging kids to read? – EXCEPT that D.E.A.R. Day falls on
Erev Pesah, when Jewish schools will be closed! It might not be a bad idea
to point this out to the three sponsoring organizations, who obviously were
not aware of our holiday when D.E.A.R. was planned.

[Hasafran]: new book Faith and Heresy

I don't know if this list is aware of the recent publication, by Yeshiva
University Press, of my translation of what is perhaps the only original
philosophical work ever written in Yiddish (of course there is a huge
Yiddish literature about other philosophers, such as Marx). The author, a
Lithuanian iluy from the yeshiva world, emigrated to the United States in
1929. Supporting himself by giving lessons in gemore to children, not
having a family himself, he spent long hours in his niche at the New York
Public Library, pondering philosophical issues. Usually autodidacts in
philosophy produce nothing of value; in this case, the results have been
praised by one of the most prominent philosophers in the English speaking
world, Harry Frankfurt of Princeton.

Before his untimely death in 1953, Agushewitz published three philosophical
works in Yiddish: Ancient Greek Philosophy; Principles [of Philosophy];
Faith and Heresy, the current work. The book is a sustained attack on the
influential philosophy of materalism, ancient and modern. It contains
discussions and criticisms of a startling number of philosophers, including
Democritus, Herakleitos, Plato, Descartes, Kant, Hobbes, Russell, Cantor
[!], Zeno, Bergson, Buechner, and, of course Spinoza. It contains a
discussion of Free Will, which is one of the most interesting ever written
in any language. (This chapter was published in the Torah U-madda Journal,
and is accessible through the website www.yu.edu. The Spinoza chapter was
published in an international Spinoza journal.)

I am the translator, and have no financial interest in sales of this book,
but it is intended as a memorial to Rabbi Agushewitz, a figure unjustly
forgotten by lovers of Yiddish literature, by philosophers, and religious
thinkers. In that sense, I have an interest that this goal be achieved.

Author, singer and educator Rabbi David Zeller is available for events in
June, August and late October/November 2006.

David will be focusing on his new book The Soul of The Story: Meetings
with Remarkable People (ISBN 1580232728 ) which was published recently by
Jewish Lights. Thoughtful and endearing, provocative and witty, the book is
filled delightful stories which recall David's meetings with the likes
of Carl Jung, Shlomo Carlebach, Alan Watts, Sri Pad Baba, the Mother (Sri
Aurobindo Ashram), Carlos Castaneda and many others, well known and unknown
and the experiences and teachings that ultimately allowed him to rediscover
his own spiritual heritage. (please see http://davidzeller.org/book for

David has developed an international reputation as a musician, lecturer,
and workshop leader in Jewish mysticism, spirituality and meditation, as
well as in transpersonal psychology (the psychology of body, emotion, mind,
and soul). Whether he is singing or teaching, David's work focuses on
touching the heart as much as the mind and his quiet presence informs his
presentations with a unique power.

[ha-Safran]: RE: More information on AJL Constitution

2006-02-19 Thread Nancy Sack
Hayim, Ted, Bernard, et al.,

I'm perhaps the wrong person to be addressing your concerns, as I was
unable to attend the recent meeting at which the revisions to the AJL
constitution were discussed. But as no other response has yet
appeared on the list, I'll clarify as much as I'm able to.

PDF files of the current constitution and the proposed draft
constitution (with highlights of the changes) as well as a summary
and a detailed description of the proposed changes can all be
accessed on the AJL web at
http://www.jewishlibraries.org/ajlweb/about/constitution.htm.

The AJL executive board is composed of the elected officers of the
two divisions (each with a president, vice-president and secretary)
and of the association as a whole (president,
vice-president/president-elect, immediate past-president,
vice-president for membership, vice-president for publications,
recording secretary, corresponding secretary, and treasurer).

The Webmaster, the various editors, the listowner of Hasafran,
chapter representatives, et al. serve with the board on the
association's council. (All this is described in the current
constitution and is clarified, but not changed, in the revised draft.)

With one exception, the changes in the proposed draft constitution
are not substantive, but merely clarify and formalize existing
practices. The exception is the addition of a provision for
electronic balloting. Electronic balloting was discussed last June at
the members' meeting,
but's possible that more discussion of this topic is needed before an
informed decision can be made.

I hope that helps.

Liza,

I'll propose an update to the authority record for Jewish ethics. The
proposal will likely sail through because the omission was probably
an oversight. It's going to take some time before the record is
changed, however, because LC updates are down for two weeks during
their system upgrade.

The Beth Alpha synagogue mosaic is one of the most striking examples of
ancient Jewish art ever uncovered. Excavated in 1929 by E. L. Sukenik on
behalf of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, this mosaic provoked an
immediate sensation among scholars and lay people throughout Jewish
Palestine, Europe and America. Located in Israel’s Jezreel Valley, this
remarkable mosaic preserves images of the Binding of Isaac (Exodus 22), of
a zodiac wheel flanked by personifications of the seasons that was labeled
in Hebrew, and of a Torah shrine flanked by menorahs and lions.

The discovery of the Beth Alpha synagogue mosaic was a milestone in the
development of scholarly and popular consciousness of the significance of
ancient Jewish art within Jewish and Zionist culture and within the
Greco-Roman context. Sukenik’s masterful and beautifully produced final
report is of abiding scholarly value, and will interest all who take an
interest in Jewish history, art and culture. The Ancient Synagogue of Beth
Alpha was originally published in separate Hebrew and English editions.
This Gorgias Press reprint combines both versions into a single volume. It
includes an original introduction to Sukenik’s scholarship on ancient
synagogues by Steven Fine, which is illustrated with historical photographs.

The Gorgias Press edition includes additional illustrations. It is a deluxe
edition printed on long-lasting acid-free 80-lb paper, and bound in Verona
cloth.

[Ha-Safran] Biased research and library materials

2003-10-23 Thread Nancy Sack
--- Message requiring your approval --
From: Hanna Geshelin [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: [Ha-Safran] Biased research and library materials

Some years ago when I was historian for a professional society, I became
acquainted with the chief archivist at one of New England's foremost
universities; my society's materials were part of that collection. She and
I had many conversations about acquisitions policies and problems.
Archivists, like any other librarian or civilian who collects materials,
have acquisition policies and select what they will and will not keep.
These policies have everything to do with the kind of research that comes
out of that archive.

Hebrew University was begun by Jewish intellectuals (Buber, Freud and
others) whose philosophical view was that the Jews should establish an
intellectual enclave in the middle of the Arabs, and would spread
intellectualism and liberalism without establishing a state of their own.
So HUs early archivists' policies probably were very anti-statehood,
therefore anti-conservative groups, Zionist revisionists, the Irgun-types,
as well as the religious. Freud was anti-religious and Buber was big in the
Enlightenment. They were also pretty much anti-Sefardi because the Sefardim
weren't intellectuals. So any research that comes out of Hebrew
University's archives is certainly going to be limited in scope.

Also, don't you think it's naïve to believe that researchers don't have an
axe to grind, and won't select data depending on whether it fits their
world-view? I have read things written by Israeli scholars that directly
contradict things that I clearly remember from the era of the 6-Day-War,
living in Israel in 1968 and 1969, and subscribing to _Near East Reports_
and other publications for many years after that. My memory is wrong and
their scholarly research is right? I don't think so; not so often and
only in these particular ways!

In 1988, when I was working as a Jewish storyteller, I read about 40 books
about the establishment of Israel. Many of them were published in the 50's
and 60's. They covered a wide variety of viewpoints across the political
spectrum. While each one discussed events not covered in the
others---personal experiences of the authors---they also covered the same
events from different perspectives. These books were written early enough
after statehood and by people who disagreed strongly enough with each other
that collusion can be discounted. And they disagree with many, many of the
points made by revisionist scholars like Segev and Benvenisti.

I had a much younger friend who got a Ph.D. in Linguistics at MIT under
Noam Chomsky. Her politics did a 180-degree reversal as she became aware
that unless she espoused and actively supported left-wing, pro-Palestinian
politics her professional career would go nowhere. Segev and Benvenisti
have earned thousands of dollars and countless accolades due to their
political positions and research, while right-wingers have been at best
ignored and at worst jailed (in Israel) for their views. People who tout
Segev, Benvenisti and their ilk as truth-tellers have to take a long look
at the possibility that they sold out like my friend.

order by the most up-to-date methods plus ideas to enlarge the social
history of your family. The section on preservation is intended to help keep
your documents and photographs in the best possible condition.
When thinking about a suitable filing system, it is important to introduce
one which is simple, yet efficient, so that future generations will be able
to pick up where you left off.
Keeping records in order is extremely important and the chapter headed
'Document Links' illustrates the relationships between sets of documents. It
is only a guide and is intended for the reader to decide which documents to
include.
This book is suitable for all ages.

Judy Berger and I run the library(as volunteers) at Temple Beth Sholom in

some older books, etc. which we would be willing to donate to any Jewish

We would also like to get a few copies of mission statements from your

Judy Berger is a member of the AJL, by the way. Thanks. Ruth Klemens

[Ha-Safran] New Dean - Nuevo Decano

Subject: [Ha-Safran] New Dean - Nuevo Decano

Buenos Aires, October 20th., 2003

To whom it may concern,

We are pleased to inform you that Rabbi Adrian
Herbst has been appointed new Dean of our Seminario Rabinico
Latinoamericano Marshall T. Meyer, having been selected by the
International Committee of background evaluation.

Rabbi Adrian Herbst, 31 years old, married, holds
a Sociology degree from the University of Buenos Aires, a B.A. in Bible and
Jewish Thought from the University of Haifa, a Master in Judaic Studies
from the Jewish Theological Seminary in Jerusalem, a Master in Compared
Religions and Jewish Thought from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem; he
is a graduate from the Jerusalem Fellows Program (Amitei Ierushalaim), has
a PhD in Compared Religions and Jewish Thought from Harvard University and
has recently obtained his Post Doctorate in Compared Religions by Oxford
University.

 The Seminario Rabínico Latinoamericano reckons
that the appointment of Rabbi Adrian Herbst, former student of this
institution, will significantly contribute to continuity of Jewish
Education in our continent. This was the goal of our founder, the
unforgettable Rabbi Marshall T. Meyer ZL, and this continues to be our
challenge: to develop a kind of Judaism that provides for both, a way of
living and a way of thinking. That the study of our sources serves as a
trigger to live Judaism with dignity and basically with a good knowledge of
it.

Subject: Re: [Ha-Safran] spanish version of the talmud

Even though Hayim said that we should direct our answers only to María
Gutierrez, I get so many questions about spanish talmud that I've decided to
send the latest news to the list:
Do you know where I could purchase the spanish version of the talmud on CD?

At this time there is only one spanish version of the talmud (incomplete) and
absolutely none on CD. However just this month there has been a new effort to
produce an edition of the talmud in spanish:
1) The only bilingual version of the talmud which follows the original
hebreo-arameo as found in the Vilna edition page for page with a translation in
castellano translated by Abraham J. Weiss and offered by Acervo
Cultural/Editoriales, Beruti 3676 4to Piso (1425) Capital Federal, BsAs
(Argentina) Tel: 5411-4831-2870
http://www.talmud.com.ar/
The version is offered for 80$US/tome. However if you buy the 10 tomes
available they usually offer a slightly lower price.
2) Just this week I got a pamflette from the Barcelona book distributor
Riopiedras Ediciones, c/ Rocafort 249, 08029 Barcelona (Espana), tlf/fax +34 93
321 3552, mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] anouncing a new effort by the
Editorial Alef Jojma. There will be 25 hard-bound tomes each costing about 43$.
Berajot, 652pp, has just been published; the other tomes are to follow. The
blurb in the pamphlette states:
1) Literal translation of the texto
2) Text subtitled and divided into questions, answers and clarifications
facilitate study even though it is clearly stated by the translators that the
talmud is not structured in this manner.
3) Each tract is preceded by an introduction that defines and details the
principle topics.
4) Each tome includes an extensive and detailed glossary.
If you open a subscription with Riopiedras they will inform you when each tome
comes out.
Sweet, happy, prosperous and healthy year

[Ha-Safran] Slavic Judaica

2003-10-17 Thread Nancy Sack
--- Message requiring your approval --
From: Zachary Baker [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: [Ha-Safran] Slavic Judaica

Below is a list of Slavic and East European booksellers from whom Stanford
buys much of its Judaica. It appears as the appendix to my paper, Slavic
Judaica Revisited, included in the Toronto convention proceedings and
available online on the AJL website.

Like other libraries, Stanford also maintains exchanges with libraries in
Eastern Europe (especially in the former Soviet republics), and acquires
much of its Slavica -- including Judaica -- through those channels.

Finally, I would like to draw the attention of Ha-Safran subscribers to a
recent issue of the journal Slavic East European Information Resources
(SEEIR), published by Haworth. Vol. 4, no. 2-3 (2003), which I
guest-edited. The double issue bears the added title Judaica in the Slavic
Realm, Slavica in the Judaic Realm: Repositories, Collections, Projects,
Publications. It will also be issued as a book.

Among the bibliographies and bibliographical essays in that issue of SEEIR
I would like to mention the following:

Hebrew Incunabula in the Asiatic Museum of St. Petersburg, by S. M. Iakerson;
Jewish Book Publishing Today in the Countries of the Former USSR, by
Alexander Frenkel;
Slavic Judaica in the YIVO Library: Acquisitions from 1991-2001, by
Nikolai Borodulin;
From Odessa to Odessa: Russian-Jewish Periodicals of Ukraine, by Vladimir
Karasik;
Bibliographical Projects in Polish-Jewish Studies since 1989, by Stephen
D. Corrsin.

The other contributions to SEEIR are:

The Jewish Archival Survey: Tracing Jewish Records in the Former Soviet
Archives, by Marek Web;
The Creation of a Documentary Collection on the History of Russian Jewry
at the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People, by Benyamin
Lukin;
Microfilming Hebrew Manuscripts in Eastern Europe, by Benjamin Richler;
Resources on the Genealogy of Eastern European Jews, by Zachary M. Baker

Princeton University Library Short-Term Research Grants for 2004-2005

The Friends of the Princeton University Library anticipate awarding up
to ten short-term research grants to promote scholarly use of the
research collections. The Program in Hellenic Studies will also support
a limited number of library grants in Hellenic studies. And the Cotsen's
Children's Library supports research in its collection on aspects of
children's books. In addition, there is a special fund that may be
available for original research in public policy collections held by the
Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library, and the Maxwell Fund will support
research on material relating to the Portuguese-speaking world. These
grants, which have a value of up to $2,500 each, are meant to help
defray expenses in traveling to and residing in Princeton during the
tenure of the grant. The length of the grant will depend on the
applicant’s research proposal, but is ordinarily one month. This round’s
grants are tenable from May 2004 to April 2005. The deadline is 15
January 2004.
Applicants (graduate students, professors, independent researchers) are
asked to submit a completed application form, consultation form and
budget form, a résumé, and a research proposal not exceeding three pages
in length. Application forms are available from our website
http://www.princeton.edu/~rbsc/fellowships/ or by writing to the
address given below. Applicants must also arrange for two confidential
letters of recommendation (in English) to be sent directly to the
Research Grants Committee at the Library address.
The proposal should address specifically the relevance of the Princeton
University Library collections to the proposed research. Prospective
grantees are urged to consult the Library’s home page (at
http://libweb.princeton.edu) for detailed descriptions of the
collections, especially those in the Rare Books and Special Collections
Department, and for the names of curators and reference staff.
Applicants should have specific Princeton resources in mind—not simply a
desire to make use of a major research library—as they prepare their
proposals.
A committee consisting of members of the faculty, the library staff, and
the Friends will award the grants on the basis of the relevance of the
proposal to unique holdings of the library, the merits and significance
of the project, and the applicant’s scholarly qualifications. Awards
will be made before 1 April 2004.
Application materials and letters of recommendation are to be mailed to
Research Grants Committee, Princeton University Library, One Washington
Road, Princeton, NJ 08544. Materials mailed to the committee must be
postmarked no later than 15 January 2004. Facsimile transmissions may be
sent to (609) 258?2324. Electronic communications to the Committee may
be sent to mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Materials submitted by e-mail or
facsimile must be received no later than 15 January 2004.
