2006-12-12 Thread Wim Barelds

LDuke, Im quite sure I recall Mani saying on the matties event script forums
that he tries to rely as much on the SDK as possible, though this could have
changed since, or I could be remembering it entirely wrong. Either way, you
can't ask VALVe to support engine hacks, you can ask from them to
further increase the functionality of the provided SDK / API, but this
again would be more towards "being nice" then towards "obligation".

As for the supposed "We won't buy VALVe products again if they don't
listen", fact is you're never really going to be happy, You're going to keep
complaining, and when there's nothing to complain about, you'll think of
something. If you won't, someone else will.

VALVe has their own marketing department, let them do their thing. You can
give suggestions, ask questions or even complain when there's a good reason,
You however are not in a position to make demands, or tell them how to do
their work.

Last I checked, server providers still make money of what VALVe provides
free of charge.

Updates to Counter-Strike: Source have been released. These updates are
required, so unless your running a Linux server that auto-updates,

Counter-Strike: Source
 - Fixed a crash caused by loading a custom map that has an associated
.nav file but no "place names" in the navigation mesh
 - Fixed an issue with cl_minmodels swapping CT and T skins
 - Enemies can no longer be "radar spotted" through smoke clouds or
while blind
 - The radar obeys HudRadar properties in the HudLayout file now
 - Your "self dot" in the radar now shows your view cone
 - The inset overview zoom level is no longer reset to default each
round

That's all true. One thing does confuse me a bit -- when you guys at
Valve
are running internal game-play tests, do you only ever play with
stock-standard css? If not, and if you know the update stops one of
those
mods from working, perhaps a "heads up" to the mods you also use
would be
a
nice thing to do? Something along the lines of: "sorry guys, hope you're

Apart from that, meh... change happens. The update itself is really very
good.

Re: [hlds_linux] Counter-Strike: Source update released

2006-08-26 Thread David Anderson

Yup, Valve is very helpful to modders building a full client mod using
the SDK.

However, Valve rarely adds things us server-side developers need. The
simplest explanation is that they want tight control over how their mods
appear to their customer base. This also makes the SDK look more
attractive to 3rd party developers, since they know their game can't be
easily modified.

Major plugin devs or not, there's an agenda higher than that. I'll
leave the rest of the conspiracy theorying to you ;)

They were helping the developers of the major mods update to the new SDK,
such as Dystopia and a few others. Why wouldn't they help the major plugin
developers? Whether it be a mod or a plugin you still have to change things
to make it work the way you want.

Also, the only reason I was "nitpicking" your grammar was because I thought
"us developers" sounded out of context. I didn't mean it to be offensive by
any terms.

Anyway, I know for a fact that Valve was helping out the modders, so why
wouldn't they help the people doing the plugins?

On 8/26/06, David Anderson < [EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

There is no time to prepare for updates as the binaries are released
publically and that's it. Did you even read what I said?

Valve doesn't and can't help us with the stuff that we're doing (the
stuff that breaks). Expecting them to would be ridiculous for a number
of reasons. If they're already confining us to dirty hacks, why would
they help us with our hacks? Also, why should they take time out of
their most likely busy schedule to help us with the hacks that'll break
anyway?

The best solution is to just pre-release or beta-release the binaries to
developers. Even if it were only 48 hours in advance it'd be a huge
help and given the slow release cycle I don't think two days would hurt.
I'd (probably) stop whining if they did only that, since I'm willing
to sit here and hunt down binary changes for the night.

Again it's not like none of this has been suggested before.

2006-08-26 Thread David Anderson

RE: [hlds_linux] Counter-Strike: Source update released

2006-08-26 Thread Snakez
I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that the server plugins that
are breaking are those that use hacks to hook into the engine, rather than
using the server plugin interface. Memory locations, etc change with every
update, so it would be impossible for Valve to stop plugins that do this
from breaking.

In order to prevent this, I recall Valve telling plugin writers to contact
them so they can help them further expand the plugin interface, so they
don't need to use unsupported methods to hook into the engine, although I'm
not sure if anyone actually took them up on that offer.

I would sure hope there testing with just stock hl2dm/css/dods etc.
There is no need to use addons. There was none to use at its first
inception. Because no one had the SDK.

And thats the only way there going to know if it will work on
linux/windows. Is by itself.
It up to the addon developer to figure out how to add his mod.

One thing does confuse me a bit -- when you guys at
Valve are running internal game-play tests, do you only ever play with

Why should they let them know, its not there problem. Its a third
party mod. Not support by Valve. Do you realize there may be 30 plus
addons out there.

I would rather have Valve just worry about making sure updates work,
and not the addons.

Support falls on the creator of those addons to fix the problem after
the update has been released to the public, if they choose too.

If not, and if you know the update stops one of

Imagine that on the client side at each update the game had to repair

Be thankful that its not like in 1998 when you had to fight to find
the update, then let alone wait to try and download it. And hope
someone on this list provided a link to download the update.

I'm sure there are still many here that remember those days. I sure do.

I would rather do a file remove to disable a third party mod any day.

Alfred knows how it is with admin addons.

In a perfect world it would be nice if Valve released source code to

all know its not going to happen.

You will just have to deal with it. Heck you run servers, anything can happen.

Is it so hard to have a minimum of testing and integration with the

You are killing your own business by making GSP and servers
administrators bored with this kind of release.

I jsut double-checked we have 3.5+k css maps

Making back-ups and reverting to old versions and such isn't very useful
when there is no backward compatibility in the client software.

Same story here by the way... All mods are switched off at the moment.
In my opinion (oh dear.. here we go) it's a shame major changes, that
could break mods, aren't communicated to the creators of the major CS:S
mods (mani, beetle, etc) before they are implemented. If that would be
done, they would be able to pre-release versions of their mods, that are
compatible with the Valve releases and it would save many of us
headache's trying to explain to the players on the servers (and in the
case of GSP's to the customers) why their favorite mods aren't working.
Giving some 'recognition' in that way to mods that run on a very large
percentage of the source based servers, would be a thing beneficial to
all parties involved (including Valve).

This fix only works for custom maps, wich has external nav files. Those,

Dont forget to delete the nav files line, from the res file too, if there

The "random map change after game commencing" bug still exist. To
reproduce
this, do the following:

1. run a linux dedicated server as usual 2. switch the map with the
nextlevel command to a map that does not exist in the mapcycle

After the next map loads and the game says "game commencing" the current
map
will be switched to another map.

Is anybody else able to update..? I have 3 servers
and none of them are doing anything, just hanging at
the first section of the update.. My client updated
nice and fast, but the server is just... not.. doing
anything. :( Is it just because there's an assload of
traffic trying to update and it will go away, or is
there something wrong with the update servers? I
wanna play militia dammit! lol.

there something wrong with the update servers? I

Re: AW: [hlds_linux] Counter-Strike: Source update released

2005-12-03 Thread kama

I agree, valve used to be good to the community, and in many ways still
are. They are the one to stride for when it comes to company<->community
interactions, and that on several levels.

I've been on this list since 2000 and there is no other company that can
messure to the support we have got. On top of that you have a exelent
plugin API (at least for hlds), easy command interface and they have made
a stand against cheaters.

But lately the quality of all this have gone downhill. The latest hlds
upgrades have been a pain in the ass for us, counting from the first
upgrade this year. (around may/june) Thats when I started to see a higher
choke problems and reported it to the list. Apperently "noone" else had
this issues, so I dropped it and thought it had something todo with my
servers or network.

Then a couple of month later when Valve released a new patch, that
introduced threading I started to get a lot of crashes. On a normal day we
got around 60 crashes, but all time high was about 80 crashes. I reported
it in and still "noone" on the list had any problems.

Now we are up to the v24->v27 crash issues. And everyone started to see
crashes. And even those crashes that I reported months earlier.

I would suggest that Valve get someone to go through all the code from
each patch they released and se whats wrong. Hopefully they have a CVS of
some kind.

Even with these latest problems, I still consider Valve to be the one that
every other gamecompany should copy from. A lot of developers have tried
to integrate admin systems or improve serverside setups. Epic, Dice and
even ID have a long way to go on these issues.

Serveradmins want simplicity on setting up a server.
Gameadmin wants simplicity to administrate a gameserver.

I cant find any game that matches these points exept them from valve.

Is there any reason why they have to keep releasing updates that cause
servers to crash that use mods such as mani_admin_plugin? I think it would
be a smart idea for mani and valve to collaborate on this before updates are
release, or they should atleast be tested to see if something like this will
occur. I mean I don't think I've seen a cs:s server online in the last few
months that wasn't running mani mod. This is a complete nuisance for
someone like myself that has to reinstall the damn mod 30 times after ever
update. Oh yeah broke this one too

Sigh...I have a headache.

Also anyone reinstalling the mani plugin latest update, this will still
cause a server crash if any weapon retrictions are enabled so just giving
you a heads up. I would suggest not installing the latest mani update until
a better release is available.

The ID you see on the "STEAM USERID validated" is the correct one. The
one in the connected line is bad (its getting stale data from the
previous user of that server slot), you should ignore that first Steam
ID. Note that this is purely a logging problem, other systems (like
banning) are not effected. We are working on a fix.

Hi all,

Since the update, I am observing unusual behavior with STEAM IDs. I believe
this has been mentioned before with the recent HL1 update.

For example:

L 12/02/2005 - 13:55:19: "[RU]<<>><161><>"

Which one is correct?

Also, to do with de_nuke, I am experiencing players falling through stairs
and walking through boxes. Has anyone else observed this? It doesn't do it
if I play the game with a local server in Windows...

And just in case others haven't noticed (nothing to do with Valve, I guess),
if you run Mani on your server, be sure to disable it since it crashes srcds
every couple of minutes. There has been a small fix released, but it still
crashes if you have weapon restrictions (at the time of writing).

Your version of Nuke has some missing or corrupted textures. Whenever
I've had that, I've always had to do a fresh install of the game in a
separate directory and then make that my base file base (thru mv). I
believe this goes hand in hand with the constant hangups in the Source
updating which require constant babysitting to make sure they don't sit
in one spot for hours at a time.

I see. Are there also forums _with_ feedback and a second Alfred for the
windows issues? Actually I am an admin for several linux servers, and it
doesn't make maintainance easier if you can't join your own boxes. The
only thing I want is some kind of notice, which should be possible
inspite of your argument being right formally. Omerta won't help the
case.

Re: [hlds_linux] Counter-Strike: Source update released

2005-12-02 Thread Nic Strix

seeing as hl2.exe and datacache.dll are both windows files then maybe you
need to
1. post in the windows mailing list or
2. install the linux files

all depending on your system...

Indeed I tried to run a Source engine based game called Counter-Strike:
Source for the last weeks. But two little folks called hl2.exe and
datacache.dll keep me from doing that.

Yes, you are right, I already mentioned it on hlds_linux (like hundreds
of other people did in the valve forums). But I didn't see any response,
neither at this location nor at the forums.

This update didn't fix this known problem (there are more than 14.000
views on the corresponding threads in the valve forums), it rather seems
to worsen stability concerns.

It would be nice to get any kind of reaction on this attempt. Even the
nicest eye candy (like HDR) is worth nothing if you can't run the game.

RE: [hlds_linux] Counter-Strike: Source update released

2005-12-01 Thread Alfred Reynolds
This update also contains a Source Engine update, so if you run ANY
Source engine based game then you should get this update (it is only
required for Counter-Strike: Source however).
