They are the kind developed to reduce decibels, but not to the point where you cannot hear (I believe the rating is a 6dB reduction). I've found that I do not have problems hearing the orchestra while using them, but I don't hear pitch as well. (Could be because nobody else is in tune, either.) Have any of you used these before? If so, what did you do to adjust to the difference in sound and correct your pitch? Why use Earplugs? Just go bells up in the face of the percussionist sitting right behind you and let them have it; maybe they'll get the picture. If this doesn't work, you're using deflectors so asked to be moved- surely this won't affect the sound in the concert hall? But seriously, if it's so loud you must use earplugs something is not right about the musical decisions the group is making regarding loud playing or banging. Why sacrifice your own musical quality (pitch, volume control) so someone else can bang away on their drum? Get rid of the earplugs and hire new percussionists! I received both bells when I picked up the horn; but I like the original silver/copper plated bell compared to the excellent condition Rauch bell. So, I have for sale the bell made by Rauch (absolutely nothing wrong with it unlaquered in perfect condition); and I'm trying to figure out which bell ring Rauch used in the Mid to Late 70's. [Hornlist] Re: Leadpipes on 8d
I wouldn't worry so much about fooling with leadpipes. A lot of brass players have huge misconceptions about how easy brass repair is, and let me tell you from an amatuer horn tinkerers experience that brass repair is in no way as big of a deal as a lot of us think it is. Of course neither is car repair, but only a few out there have the time and dedication to learn a craft to work on our own cars or horns. As far as worrying about changing things on a horn by heating it up and removing parts, as long as the repair man or woman is knowledgeable and careful you have absolutely nothing to worry about. As far as historical value goes, always keep your original parts. They can always be put back on, and if it's a good job nobody besides a good repair man is going to know the difference. Secondly, I remember talking to Tony Halstead about leadpipes for 8d's and I believe he has the best designed pipe for an 8d type instrument out there. It's a Perry/Halstead pipe made by Nick Perry- I'm pretty sure he took a number of "good" pipes for 8d's from the original M series pipe, A few Atkinson Pipes, some Lawson Pipes, and some older pre letter series pipes and drew a map to come up with a consistant pipe based on four or five other very good leadpipes. I also remember that these pipes are extremely cheap compared to Atkinson Patterson or Lawson; (almost half the price). Check out Mr. Halsteads new website for contact information. [Hornlist] Re: Endurance
I remember reading about some of the Jazz greats really learning to become "Greats".- Their practice strategy was simple. Aebersold quotes many a jazz player with this: "The truth is, many guys that are out there functioning today Got Good by Playing for 16 hours a day for about 3 or 4 years straight." There are many athletes out there that do nothing but lift and run 8 hours a day. I remember hearing about a prospective member of the Irish Rowing team that had a workout schedule of 12 hours a day everyday to reach the Irish National team. Of course you have to be careful about what you practice and you have to know your limitations; but if horn playing is your passion and you want to go somewhere with it you have to practice. People only have so much natural talent, once you hit a point where that is exposed and exhausted you have to practice or train both endurance wise and muscle memory wise to obtain perfection. Horn playing is not easy to start with- it becomes easy through lots of hard work and practice. Blood sweat and tears. I'd Suggest playing for 4 hours a day for about a month and see where you are. Hi list, I figured I'd give you the first dibs. I have two reynolds chambers horns, 1 nickel 1 brass. The brass horn has serial number 72000 and the nickel horn serial number 78000. Both have the heavy bell and shorter leadpipe. The brass horn has an RMC engraving and the nickel horn has Reynolds Contempora made in USA- the nickel horn was made right before the abilene move, but does have a heavy bell. The yellow brass horn has newer valves with excellent compression and some modification to the valve section making it very notchy and comfortable to play. The nickel horn has been hand lapped and bearings swedged but would benefit from a plating of some kind. Both horns play superbly and are better than most elkhart 8d's out there. the yellow brass horn is a little notchier and has a nice High C to High F range-I don't want to sell both, so take your pick- I'd like 1200$ for each- or a partial trade on some kind of descant horn or a good high horn(single Bb or something). [Hornlist] Oboe Reeds in horns, was pressure
Because everyone can't be Bill Vermuelen and might want to be, here is a neat little trick to see how the aparture works. In a rehearsal for Mozart 29 I sat next to the oboe player and we experimented with parts. He took an old oboe reed he had lying around and put it into my horn mouthpiece. The small aparture of the reed in conjunction with the horn produced High G's above High C's, sometimes I could lip up to a High A and a High Bb above high C. This result prooves that a really fast air speed and a very small aparture produces very high notes and NOT pressure. I should mention that the tone was very full and bright unlike the fake high c's you can get by halfly depressing the first valve on some horns or something like that. I then experimented with a Bassoon reed which is about twice the size, the result was a G right above the staff one octave lower. With a Contra reed the result was a 3rd space C on the middle of the staff. Really, to actually produce a High G or any note for that matter, all we need to do is use lip tension to create an aparture small enough or high enough for the note we are aiming forplus use enough airspeed to get the note to speak at that vibration or frequency. I think one of the things left out in this talk was the important use of lip tension to create high notes. I think pressure creates tension in a bad way in brass playing; it's unreliable and therefore it is discouraged although it can get the same result as tension playing within the lips. But the trick is creating the tension in your lips without needing the added mouthpiece pressure so the tone is not distorted or airy or doesn't speak at all. So, what is the biggest key of high playing or loud playing? Let the air do the work, relax, and don't use pressure but tension in your playing. If you don't trust this theory, get an oboe reed and play some High G's! Make sure you put enough air through the reed that it speaks though. The reed can be in terrible terrible shape so you don't need a new reed, maybe a friend will have one they are willing to give away? howdy, Just a tip, the reason a conductor looks at us all the time is: We are the ones missing the notes--- Theres not much to hide when we have 10 notes in the same passage a string player has 100 notes. Hello Hans, Yes I have overstepped my bounds, I am but a mere student of the horn and only an aspiring professional. Your reply was very helpful for young musicians, you told us exactly what to do right during an audition. A hard answer to get! Thanks! I had assumed that the candidates were more qualified than you let on to be in your first posting. Obviously they were not, and your observation was correct. I figured that due to the small number of people that applied they would be of the highest quality, and you would only audition the Best. I appologize. [Hornlist] Marching Band and TUning slides
I wonder how many High School Marching Bands Hans played in? Marching Band is different than any European community band, and to be able to preach about The USA's high school band programs you better have real credentials. I have lived the pain for 6 years in High School and College and I never care to do it again. Let's leave it at that. I also understand that Hans' orchestra is of the utmost quality and should only accept the best, but it seems like you count people out way too soon. I understand that tuning is a major part of professional everyday playing, but was the five minutes you gave them really enough to judge them? Did you ask them for a reasonable explanation to why they are tuning a certain way? After you listened to their tuning note, did you listen what they gave to you musically or did you count them out right away? Did they play the audition in tune? I understand that it was Hans' audition commitee and hans' would have the right to take or turn down anyone he choose, but it would make better sense to take the advantages(once they are already counted out) of hearing someone than the disadvantages. I thought it was the European way to discuss things and not be like americans and instantaneously cross their name off the list. Maybe Germans are different. Thats why I'm > paranoid about > factory dust and such ruining the valves. I would worry a lot more about practicing- do the things you need to do to maintain the instrument, (oil it, keep it clean and keep lanolin on the slides), beyond this if the inevitable happens let your repair man take care of it. Valves can be rebuilt, Dust can be removed, creases can be taken out, dents can be removed, and Ultrasonic cleaning machines can do magic! Not to bring back comparisons about cars but, how often do you worry about your airfilter or spark plugs in your car? If you are like most mortals you realize only when it breaks down- Horns are just the same. My advice would be to do the routine checkups to your horn, but otherwise Drive it until a cylinder blows. Re: [Hornlist] good horn tone
My prof. Dr Thomas Tritle also has the broken glass thing going on, I do as well. For anyone wanting to immulate their favorite player, sit behind phil Myers or Dale Clevenger. I'm told Clevenger's tone isn't the greatest and sounds loud and fuzzy up close but sit in the back of the concert hall and see what comes out...exactly the reason we're talking about him now. My advice for good orchestral tone would be, fool with your hand position, open it up and blow away, just make sure your horns in tune. I've also noticed a horn sounds better in public with the horn on the leg and the hand on the bottom of the bell. I think it carries farther and this way the hand is part of the wrap. Only personal opinion. hoss ___ post: [EMAIL PROTECTED] set your options at http://music.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

Re: [Hornlist] Different bell question
Pencil lead will do you just fine..same procedure with screw rim mouthpieces. You could go as far to use loc tite powder but that's a little excessive, just stick with simple graphite or pencil lead. The lead will help so the bell will not get stuck on the flange when trying to remove. my .02 Hoss ___ post: [EMAIL PROTECTED] set your options at http://music.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
Re: [Hornlist] Insuring accurate repair (was: New bell problems)
Hi List, Horn design is very simple, basically the better instruments are smoother through everything. Look at Engelbert Schmid Lawson Patterson And sometimes Atkinson, they are such great playing horns because of the smoothness through the taper of the instrument. There are no inflictions with the vibration throughout the horn. If there are rough edges and solder inside, certain partials will come out stuffy and the horn will not play with ease. Some people like this some don't. I have found that even in Conn 8d'susually the biggest problems are right around the first branch, bell tail solders and leadpipe taper. If conn would spend maybe two more hours on each instrument they would all play ideal and UMI would have happier customers. The old Kruspe and Elkhart 8d's are also great instruments, Why? It took more time to make and machines didn't stretch the metal, actual humans put it together eliminating excess solder and a smoother even taper throughout the horn. I currently play on a Cleveland model Reynolds Contempora. My first two years of playing, I noticed 4 notes that just wouldn't be in tune, d4 through f on top of the stave. I eventually ended up sending it to Atkinson brass, adding an appropriate leadpipe and a different bell tail and heavier bell. He evened out all of the taper from the first branch out and the right length of leadpipe helped the horn considerably. With the original build quality of the horn which was superb and the refinement of the mistake in manufacture, it plays as good or better than any elkhart horn with no bad notes and great resonance. It is more comparable to a Kruspe horn with no bad notes and a larger dynamic range. Go play a really middle of the road built Yamaha 667 or 668 and play the similar v series. You will be amazed as for 2000$ more you get something that is a little more free blowing and something that slots a lot better. The only difference in design is a different valve section which really isn't that much more drastic, the rest is simple build quality. Oh hope this is food for thought for everyone on the list and I should add that I'm only an amature and this is only my personal spoken opinion. I find my ideals are right you may think totally different, my 2.22$, Hoss ___ post: [EMAIL PROTECTED] set your options at http://music.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
Re: [Hornlist] New bell problems
Hi, It sounds as if the taper isn't even throughout the bell and this is resulting in bad notes. Some times this happens especially when from the factory. The metal might be thicker if I'm not mistaken they hand spin there bells? That one seam by the repairman might be where the problem lies. If there are any unneccesary kinks in the taper, bad notes and "stuffiness" will be the result. It might be wish to have the repairman smooth out the brace by taking it apart and carefully putting it back together. I hope this is helpful, Hoss ___ post: [EMAIL PROTECTED] set your options at http://music.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

Re: [Hornlist] New bell problems
Sounds like you got something with a less resonant bell and a smaller throat.is it just the bell that was replaced or the tail to? It might be too much metal in the bell in too many wrong places. If the bell was not spun evenly you may have a problem. I've noticed my Atkinson flares are very heavy and not very resonant when flicked, but it gets the job done in the concert hall. Let me know what kind of flare and how much of the bell we're talking about and I might be able to solve your problem, Hoss ___ post: [EMAIL PROTECTED] set your options at http://music.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

Re: [Hornlist] Horn Related!! Please read me!!
Take out whatever slide individually we'll say third slide, blow into the f side of horn witht he 3rd valve down and determine which side the air blows out of. Once determined put your finger on that side of the tubing and blow into the horn with the third valve down. If there is any leaky noises coming from the third valve or if the compression is not good.i.e. you can continue to blow air through with little resistance, you'll probably have a problem with the valves. do this for all individual valves and alternate between slides. Hope this was helpful. Another test you can do is put your finger on the leadpipe (completely closed off) and pull out one of the slides if it doesn't pop you've got a problem, My two cents, Hoss ___ post: [EMAIL PROTECTED] set your options at http://music.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
