Re: CA-DISK QUESTION
Flag1 = 08 for a backup, A8 for an archive. I've always had to list FLAG1 out in its binary format (FIELDS=FLAG1B) to know if files are backups or archives as I have other odd ball combinations of the bit math which are possible. From the manual... Byte # Binary Hex Meaning First 1000 80 Data set was scratched at time of archival. 0100 40 Data set was uncataloged at time of archival. 0010 20 Data set was recataloged to CA Disk pseudovolume. 0001 10 Archived due to EXPLICIT request. Note: If this bit is off, Archived by RETAIN 1000 08 Data set was archived via EXCP support. 0100 04 Archived with Incremental Backup 0010 02 Data set is DSORG=DA RECFM=U/V, or is DSORG=PS RECFM=U/V and was backed up as DA. 0001 01 Data set resided on Virtual Volume As for listing what is backup vs what is archive, good old sort works for that. Anyone have more definite references for what that should mean? Does it just mean separate power substations? That the ultimate feed comes from completely different generating plants? Of different types? (Nuke vs Coal?) And how exactly do you find out information like that? And can't the power down the last mile be coming from one place today and other tomorrow depending on how the power company manages it? Re: Calculating the pipe size for DASD mirroring
Not sure how this works on HDS disk, but with our V2X disk, we would take a snapshot and let it sit for a day. Then, after 24 hours, run the storage utilization report which would tell you how far apart the primary and secondary volumes were. Approximate amount of data changed in 24 hours - it would be a little low since you could have the same byte changed multiple times (which could be replicated) but only reported changed once when comparing old to new. It was close enough with a little fudge factor built in to calculate the pipe size for our mirror since our replication was not always on, but a scheduled push a few times a day. Target busiest days. The DASD hardware is HDS. I suppose that it's not necessary to pinpoint the changes down to the dataset or volume; if I can just get a number of bytes changed per period of time per subsystem, that should do. I've just started to peruse IBM manuals and redbooks but I'm wondering if any of you could point me to helpful tools. Re: Getmain Freemain?
Wanted to thank you all for the assistance on my storage issue last week and give you an update on the solution... The issue was with VTOCLIST, CBT file 343, and the particular way I was executing it in my new z/OS 1.10 environment. I have the routine wrapped in a REXX script which calls it once for each volume in my shop using a DCOLLECT report as the volume list driver. This process was working fine in my 1.9 environment - it seems to have been releasing the storage it obtained in between calls as the SP0 usage never climbed above 376K as the script was running. However, in my new 1.10 environment it just kept grabbing storage in SP0 below the line until it abended. John Kalinich assisted with some properly placed FREEMAIN code expecting it to help, but that was not quite all that was needed, as in 1.10 it was still abending. The addition of some well placed FREEPOOL macros finally did the trick. It should also be noted that we have a new 1.10 parm, SEZOSV1R9RULES(YES), set to YES - so its suppose to be using the old 1.9 rules for obtaining storage - but obviously something changed. So, thank you John for your coding assistance and fix. Also thank you Mark Zelden for testing assistance. John said he will update CBT 343, VTOCLIST, soon with the new code. Will be available on www.cbttape.org. In case you interested, here was the REXX script execution. //STEP1EXEC PGM=IKJEFT01,PARM='VLIST' //SYSTSPRT DD SYSOUT=* //SYSPROC DD DISP=SHR,DSN=SE.REXX.LIBRARY //SYSPRINT DD DISP=(MOD,CATLG),DSN=ISPC.VTOC.OUTPUT(+1), //DCB=(RECFM=FBA,BLKSIZE=0,LRECL=133,DSORG=PS), //UNIT=DISK,SPACE=(CYL,(55,5)) //SYSTSIN DD DUMMY //DCOLLDD DISP=SHR,DSN=SE.DCOLLECT.INPUT The REXX itself /* REXX */ SIGNAL ON ERROR EXCLUDELIST = "RESCUE SYST01" "EXECIO * DISKR DCOLL(STEM VOLS. STR5,SAVER5 GETMAIN EC,LV=(5),A=TABLADDR,SP=2 L R5,SAVER5 FREEMAIN R,LV=(5),A=TABLADDR,SP=2 SAVER5 DCF'0' So I think I have the form right, its not complaining about the FREEMAIN being invalid anymore, but its also not working as I would expect it. Initially, it was complaining because I did not have a subpool specified, and SP0 was being used, and my program can not free subpool 0 space. Watching the job execute in the landmark activity monitor, the storage being consumed is still from SP0 and the freemain is obviously not doing what its suppose to. I know I get to the statement, because if I screw up the form, it complains when it is executed, but the storage in SP0 keeps heading up. So - any ideas why it isn't grabbing storage from SP2, and why the FREEMAIN isn't working? M. On the flip side. I was thinking there might be a way in the REXX script that calls this thing in a loop to 'reset' itself each time - like its a step end, but not really since I can't lose the other REXX variables I'm using in there. Getmain Freemain?
I have an old assembler program which we call numerous times from a rexx script. There seems to be an issue introduced with our z/OS 1.10 upgrade which did not previously exist... the memory usage builds up and eventually abends. There is no freemain in the program, so I'm thinking adding one at exit will fix the issue. Worth a test, anyway. My question is about the format of the freemain statement. This is the getmain GETMAIN EC,LV=(5),A=TABLADDR TABLADDR DCA(0) And I was thinking that the freemain would just be FREEMAIN R,LV=(0),A=TABLADDR But that results in: IEA705I ERROR DURING FREEMAIN SYS CODE = 30A-1C I'm still reading up on options, but thought someone here might know the appropriate freemain statement off the top of their head? Online volume mystery
We have a set of volumes we snapshot our production data to each day so PPRC can replicate it offsite. Those target volumes stay offline, but yesterday, one of them managed to get into this state UNIT TYPE STATUS 9090 3390 O-RAL RAL, as it turns out, means 'restricted to allocation', which I've never seen before. I'm still looking, but currently stumped as to how it managed to get into this state. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks. When I go searching for information, I like to see conversations with the good, the bad, and the ugly. It lets me know the conversation was thought out and meaningful hopefully leading to a 'vetted' conclusion. Without seeing that conversational thought process, I would have to take a bigger leap of faith than I already do when assuming the information is good. Ultimately, the onus is always on me to assign a trust level to the information I get from any source. As an alternative, I know of some installations that use a Rexx procedure to list the volume to be moved, and use the results to create ADDVOLUME and ADDDATASET commands which are used to define the volume in the target system. Be careful not to keep multiple RMM plexes with the same volume defined as this could result in problems with volume status and retention. Hello all - We have two LPARS which can both see a virtual tape device. We have a need to be able to create virtual tapes on the Test LPAR and then 'migrate' them to the Production LPAR. Re: Share & z/OS Mastery Test
>I was taught not to memorize the information because it changes. Instead, learn where to look. >Wow! I have rarely found people (persons) with that viewpoint. >I could find an answer faster by looking it up, than trying to recall it. I have traditionally agreed with this viewpoint as well. There is simply too much information to be able to memorize it all accurately. The ability to research, find information, draw conclusions, etc is much more important in the long run than being able to memorize. Testing situations automatically make me feel this way since there is usually nothing more riding on it than proving I've read the material. Not understand it mind you, since I feel like there are very few good written tests out there that answer that question. That said, however, I do continually try to find ways to improve my memory and recall abilities since I find it extremely useful for meeting type settings. I can hardly run to my desk everytime a question is asked in a meeting. And while I can, and quite often do, simply make a note and tell them I will find the answer, its nice to be able to just answer the question as it usually feeds into and keeps the conversation going to its logical conclusion, which is quite often a decision, based on, of course, the information you were just able to recall. And then there are those tests Jeffrey Deaver, Engineer Systems Engineering [EMAIL PROTECTED] 651-665-4231(v) 651-610-7670(p) -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html
Share & z/OS Mastery Test
Just Curious - anyone planning on taking the z/OS System Programmer Mastery Test being offered at SHARE? I'm guessing quite a few of you could take it without even picking up the redbook: knowledge contained in the IBM Introduction to the New Mainframe: z/OS Basics textbook. This textbook is available through the IBM Academic Initiative System z program and is also available for download at: http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg246366.html ... but I was curious to know how many of you think its valuable to your careers to have. Or not. In my particular case, certifications are smiled at around my shop, and since this one is of particular interest to me, and being offered free of charge in San Diego, I'm taking the test. So SHARE is only 5.714 weeks away now, so I need to start planning. Main question for this group - How do I go about meeting some of you while I'm there? While I attended the 2001Minneapolis meeting, it was in a limited fashion, and I was not following IBM-Main back then. Now I'd like to meet as many of you as possible while I'm there. I seem to remember receptions in the evening where the tables had certain themes? Is there an IBM-Main table? Or should I just wear a t-shirt that says "IBM-Main Groupie - Say Hi To Me". Is your 'disk buffer' on your enterprise disk? If so, how much does that cost you? You may have it available now, but there is still a cost there. Does it force you to buy more enterprise disk sooner than you would have? Is it mirrored? Do you chargeback for your disk usage? Things to think about.Good luck. PDSe Program Objects vs PDS Load Modules
OK. So I've recently been introduced to the fact that when you copy a load module from a PDS to a PDSe with IEBCOPY, it magically becomes a Project Object. I've been reading what I can find and it seems that operation is ok, but that moving the other way... PDSe PO to a PDS LM is a no no since their may be 'features used in the Project Object which are not available to the Load Module'. I then read, however, that the same binder creates the PO or LM based on the library its headed to. Huh? So my questions are this: 1) Did I get that right? 2) Where is the document that describes the features available to Project Objects which are not available to Load Modules? I've got a developer group that recently 'discovered' that their test libraries are PDSes and their production libraries are PDSs. They saw the difference in the look of the load modules and got to asking questions. They have had no trouble with this operation - just curious at this point. Thanks! Enterprise Class? (Was Virtual tape limits)
>This is an enterprise class rack-mount controller What the heck does "enterprise class" mean nowadays, anyway? As I'm looking at virtual tape solutions that involve SATA disk for a MF solution, I'm being told by certain folks that its not "enterprise class". Why? Everything in the box is redundant. Its running RAID 5 or 6. Its got hot spares and does auto rebuilds - some will even do predictive failures. Sounds pretty robust to me. Is it just because the drives -might- fail more often and have to be replaced more often? Heck, I have a spindle in my 'enterprise class' MF attached array fail every few months that has to be replaced. Whats the difference? Is it because its smaller? Its still my most important data, my 'enterprise' data. Is it because its cheaper? So what is the definitive definition of "enterprise class"? Why even keep the RTDs? This stuff is inexpensive enough to keep all the tape data on spinning disk and fully mirrored. We're seriously thinking about it. Probably works for us better than most, however, since we made a concerted effort over the last decade to keep people from using tape. Re: What's a CPU second?
===snip=== Isn't the CPU time the amount of time that the CPU(s) spent doing the work? (All TCB's and all CPU's together) So if I have a job that uses 10 CPU seconds on a 500 MIPS machine and I upgrade to 1000 MIPS it may only take 4 CPU seconds, no? That's what I _think_ I've seen when a machine got upgraded, but after reading this thread I've read what I thought was that the CPU time might go up a bit after such an upgrade. Or was it an upgrade of adding additional CPU's that was in question? ===snip=== Let me try an analogy - will help me to understand it better if I get it right - you'll be sure to let me know - You have two cars (the CPs/engines/CPUs, whatever) that can move 4 people (the computing tasks) each at 60mph (the speed of the processors). To get a standard distance of 60 miles, it takes each person 1 hour. In each hour, then, you can move 8 people, so your system has 8 PMPH (people moved per hour - akin to (not the same as) MIPS or MSUs). Now upgrade your system. You now have 4 cars, each of which still move 4 people and still move at 60mph. Your PMPH is now 16. (increased MIPS) However, it still takes each person 1 hour to make the trip. But you can move more people. If you need to move an individual person faster, then you need faster cars. So we could upgrade the car engines instead of buying more cars - 2 cars, 120mph, 4 people each gets us 16 PMPH again, but this time each person is going to be moved in 30 minutes instead of an hour. Its hard to stick the MP effect into this analogy. Something about the fact that if you have more cars sharing the road, they have to move just a little bit slower or something - maybe 55mph instead of 60mph. I think, however, the MP effect is generally outweighed by the increase in engine speed, since often times upgrades will involve both an increase in the number of cars and an increase in engine speed. So in the 120mph example, it might be only 110mph because of the shared road, but the net effect over the old 60mph car is still that its faster. I suppose the multi-thread thing would be akin to being able to pack more than 4 people in a car? Analogy breaks down too much further than this ;-) Jeffrey Deaver, Engineer Systems Engineering [EMAIL PROTECTED] 651-665-4231(v) 651-610-7670(p) -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html

LPAR Org & Security
The question I'll get to: How are your shops organized when it comes to LPAR organization, access and security? To explain where I'm coming from: 1) LPARS We have two. PROD supports everything from TSO users and program development to multiple instances of IMS and DB2 and batch processes. TEST2 is an exact image of PROD created with volume level snapshots and is used for testing upgrades and troubleshooting issues. 2) Networks We have two. Production, of course, has most things connected to it, including the PROD LPAR, and all the other production servers in the company. It also has a ton of development and QA servers connected to it, along with the TEST2 LPAR when we want it there. The other network is called NEQAL, and is our separate testing network. We dynamically build pieces of our production environment there when we want to test upgrades and changes before we do it on the production network. The TEST2 LPAR is sometimes connected to this network when the testing there needs to involved the mainframe. With that explained, we've recently had a security question come up. Should the TEST2 LPAR only be connected to the NEQAL network? You see, this would then force a user to use a workstation in a separate location, not at their desktop, in order to perform work on TEST2. In this way, then, the possibility of someone becoming confused about which LPAR they are looking at on their desktop is minimized. In other words, I, systems engineer, would be less likely, as an example, to stop TCPIP accidentally on the PROD LPAR because if I'm sitting at my desk, I know its the PROD LPAR, and if I'm in the NEQAL lab, I know its TEST2. Right now, I can swap from PROD to TEST2 at my workstation. We systems engineers are, of course, arguing that we need that access as a matter of productivity. It really opens a can of worms, since if they were to dictate that, we would soon be arguing that all the development and test servers should also only be on the NEQAL network. And then we get into the arguments about where the production instances of DB2 verses the 3 test instances should be running. Separate LPARS? Ug. So the main question I want to ask you all is this: How are your shops organized when it comes to LPAR organization, access and security? Most of us have only worked in our own shop, and so learning what others do will help us decided which course of action is best - and convince management of it! THANKS! Tape Encryption Products List - Version 3.0
operating systems to this list if someone has done homework on that. (Some on this list do.) 9. Many organizations are attempting to shift certain tape exchanges toward secured network exchanges. That shift may be viable in many situations, and z/OS already has ample support for network-related encryption, such as SFTP and SSH. But please note that FTP, despite its popularity, has some quality of service weaknesses. For example, unless FTP'ing between two very recent z/OS releases (where there's some special handshaking), there's no guarantee an entire file will arrive. (FTP has some problems signaling end of file.) You should run an independent after-verification of some sort to make sure a file arrives complete and intact. Also, FTP is NOT a good way to integrate applications (again, despite its popularity in that role). Sit down with a zSeries software architect if you're in that situation to do some good planning. 10. Organizations will need to consider whether "data recentralization" makes sense -- that is, not to copy whole files/datasets in the first place. In pure statistical terms, the more copies of data "out there," the more likely data privacy will be compromised. It is simply more difficult to assure that every copy has appropriate authorization/access controls in force when there are many copies. 11. IBM DB2 UDB V8 for z/OS and IBMs Data Encryption Tool for IMS and DB2 may have some relevance to tape encryption for those products (DB2 and IMS). For more information, see the article in the August, 2005, z/OS Hot Topics newsletter: http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/zseries/zos/bkserv/hot_topics.html Jeffrey Deaver, Engineer Systems Engineering [EMAIL PROTECTED] 651-665-4231(v) 651-610-7670(p) -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html

Data loss (theft) and need to notify - if you even know about it. There are products available for PCs/laptops that will stop data copies to removable media unless its encrypted - but then what about email? This really gets to the point that if you want to protect sensitive data, it has to be encrypted from time of creation - otherwise there is always an opportunity for a copy of it to move somewhere. Heck - even if its encrypted from creation - the 'analog hole' will still be an opportunity for data leaks as account reps or the like talk with customers and have access to view that sensitive information on their monitors. But the point there is that its a smaller amount of data - one customer at a time. The amount of damage that can be done is limited. While the back-end stores of data that provide the opportunity for leaks thousands of times bigger is protected all the time. >At some point, you've got to evaluate the situation for >reasonableness and call it good enough. I can not imagine working in an environment where my (and the other 3000 employees') bags are searched as we go in and out of the office. It would take hundreds of guards and would have to involve some form of strip searching. I'm sure this happens in certain forums - I just can't imagine it when there is an alternative to prevent the need in the first place. Another example to argue for all tapes encrypted What happens to tapes when they break in your shop? In a perfect world the process should perhaps be ... 1) Change logged in change management system to note what is about to happen. 2) logically remove tape from tape management system 3) Degauss tape with coworker watching 4) Toss tape in locked bin headed for the crusher with coworker watching 5) Record completed event in change management system with names of employees that confirmed activity. HOWEVER... what happens if Mr. new operator simply tosses it in the trash. A few months later the audit turns up a missing tape. You can't find it, and there is no trail to tell you where it went. It is lost and under the breach notification laws as I understand them, that is a notifiable event - even though your employee tells you they threw it in the trash. Thus the notices that say "we're 99% sure its in a landfill". Right or wrong, given our society, I firmly believe that all data will be encrypted everywhere all the time at some point in the not too distant future. But for now, if the media moves, encrypt it. And while that may be true and the data is more than likely safe, the damage to the reputation is already done, and the cost to notify is real. For my money, if it >can< be carried out, its going to be encrypted. CPACF Metrics?
I've been told that IBM publishes some numbers that show CPACF overhead metrics somewhere? Anyone know where? I'm basically interested in confirming something a vendor told me about an encryption product - so many MBs encrypted for so many CPU seconds. Thanks. Re: V2X2 vs. Shark (SnapShot v. FlashCopy)
>What is a V2X2? V2X2 is StorageTek (now Sun-Storagetek) disk array. General reference name is SVA (Shared Virtual Array) and the various models over the years have been: IceBerg 9393 9500 V960 V2X V2X2 V2X4 (and V2X4f for FICON attached) We've gone through every model except the V960 at some point over the last seven years. >I think STK calls it: Log Structured Array. >To me, its description sounded like 'virtual DASD'. I believe they (the WinTel world folks) call it thin provisioning these days. Works great. I have only 2.8TB of physical raw disk in my V2X4f, yet I present 23.1 TB of usable space. Split three ways, I've got 7.7 TB presented to my production LPAR, another 7.7 TB for BCP snapshot copies, and another 7.7TB that is snapshot copied daily and used as a sandbox LPAR. If I was to go and buy disk from some other vendors and duplicate the functionality I have today, I would have to be asking for that 23.1 TB of actual physical disk. >It's very important to keep the >time window when the volumes are >actually copied as small as possible. I snap 926 volumes (almost all 3390-9) in about 1.4 minutes. We dynamically create the snap JCL each morning right before our syncpoint with a rexx routine wrapped around a dcollect report. This way name and allocation changes are automatically picked up (one less possible human error potential). With the automated IMS/DB2/TSO/etc down and up processes, the whole syncpoint runs about 2.5 minutes. > PPRC or XRC are not options due to cost > PPRC need not to be expensive. Obviously it > requires two dasd boxes and link, but gives > you much better RTO and RPO. We just replaced our tape based backups (which were taking about 3.5-4.5 hours with 9840's, HSDM, and ExHPDM) with a PPRC solution. HUGE reduction in RTO as the 1-2 days it was going to take to ship the tapes to the hot site was simply eliminated. The 4-5 hour restore from tape time was also eliminated as the data is sitting on another V2X4f at the hotsite ready to go. Last DR test we were IPL'ed in under an hour after arriving at the local recovery center. The RPO only lost a few hours (the difference between the time it took to create the tapes verses push the data across the PPRC link) and is still about 24 hours since we only take one syncpoint a day (after batch), but we are looking at adding another in the pre-batch lull time. We'll probably take a hard look (I'm hoping) at a GDPS solution as well since it would be the next logical step.. but I fear the costs may simply be too high for management to bear - even with the promise of zero down time. Most expensive ongoing cost of the PPRC solution was the link cost. But we manage to do it with a tiny DS3 by snapping the BCP sets throughout the day and sending changes across the link. That way, when it comes to syncpoint time, the amount of change data is very small and the DR set at the remote site is set and stable and ready for recovery just 10-15 minutes after the snaps (keeping the RPO close to that 24 hours) Jeffrey Deaver, Engineer Systems Engineering [EMAIL PROTECTED] 651-665-4231(v) 651-610-7670(p) -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html
Re: Data replication at a remote site - elementary doubt
>When you implement synchronuous (or asynchronuous) copy of your DASD >data to a remote site, is it necessary for the remote site to have a >z/OS system active? No. We (async) mirror between two STK V2X4f arrays and there is no host attached at the hot site until we want to use the data there (either for a test or a DR situation) >and until you issue commands that stop the >mirroring (depending on how implemented), the remote site can't have >anything but read access to the data, if at all. Actually, because we use remote snapshot on our remote disk, we can continue with production async mirror process and IPL to a copy of the data on the remote disk with the hot site's MF hardware. We do this every time we have a DR exercise. We have three copies of the data on the remote disk... 1) The staging copy where the async mirror data is written 2) Copy 1 which is remote snapped every other day 3) Copy 2 which is remote snapped every other day opposite copy 1 So for a DR test we might plan on IPLing Copy1, knowing that the async data will continue to be written to the staging area, and then to Copy 2 for the daily 'synchpoint'. Help. I have two files in the same format... ADC.DPGMDEV.TWORK.HDBSPB.IT010 2006-08-31...Â. CCC4CDCDCCE4EEDDD4CCCEDC4CEFFF446FF6FF00160 143B4774455B36692B842272B930100020060080310072C ... That's the text with the hex turned on below it. Both files contain fields 1)filename 2)date, and 3)positive packed decimal number. I need to subtract file 2 from file 1 where the file names are the same, but I need the currently positive numbers in file2 to be >subtracted< from file1. If the numbers in file 2 were negative, it would be an easy sort, but I'm brain freezing on how to turn them negative first. There should always be a match for a file 2 dataset name in file 1, but there might not be a match the other way. I'm heading to the sort manual now, but in a time crunch and so thought someone here might know quick. Suggestions? Thanks. Re: delete noscratch performance at DR
>We basically uncatalog all of our disk datasets >leaving just the tape datasets in the catalogs. >The catalogs are restored along with full pack >restores of certain volumes. Can you isolate the usercatalogs with disk entries on seperate volumes from the user catalogs with tape entries and then only do the full volume restore for the tape entry catalog? Then simply define empty user catalogs for the missing disk ones? Eliminate the need to do the delete work. Another thought - would it be simplier (and perhaps quicker) to do full volume restores for all your data instead of selectively restoring only certain datasets? Can the data be organized in a manner that would allow this to happen this way? Test data vs Production data on different volumes, perhaps? Re: Z/Os Storage Mgmt products
>the list goes on. >A very powerful product. I had CA-Vantage once. It was a powerful tool. And like any powerful tool, it sucked resources. We obtained it at first as a 'free' add-on with a clump of other products we had purchased (foot in the door), and then later had to start paying for it.This was both for license costs and CPU costs. I enjoyed setting up all the automation features and letting it trend everything under the sun. The problem was that I really didn't need everything under the sun. I was micromanaging my storage because I had the tool to let me do it, but that was the only reason. Years later now I've no SRM type product on the mainframe and I'm happy. Almost all my management processes have been automated with various tools like dcollects and sorts and CA-Disk working with SMS. That said... I've now been tasked with finding an SRM for the SAN management team - of which I'm not really a part, but playing a project management role. You see? The mainframe storage environment is so stable that my time is shifting to help the growing and sometimes hubris SAN folks out. Interesting. Re: EXHPDM - QUESTION
> We run 1 job at a time which allocates 24 tape drives. Can you expand on that? For instance, we would run one volume dump job for each volume. Then I had 6 drives available and set as the DeviceLimit. Then I allowed 7 connections per drive. So Exhpdm would support a total of 6x7=42 connections. Then I would normally run these jobs in a JES class set aside just for this process which had 42 open initiators. So, if any one of those changes I can get varied results More inits open would have Exhpdm issue wait messages (but should not slow down the process) Less inits open would mean I'm not maximizing my thruput. No messages, but it would run slower. More drives would simply be ignored. Less drives would lessen my thruput and cause wait messages since I'd still have 42 jobs that want to connect. There is also the issue of how fast the disk can serve up the data - although this is outside the control of your Exhpdm processes. Were there disk channels unavailable during the process? Do you normally get the wait messages? If not, then is has to be something in the setup as I've described above.I found it useful to set the processes up so I did not normally get the wait message - then they become an indicator that something changed. Re: EXHPDM - QUESTION
> "The specified connection is waiting for a stream task to become available because the > connection has WAIT(YES) specified (or defaulted) and no stream task is currently able to > process the connection." Was something else running that was using one of the tape drives you normally use? The wait is basically saying that you exceeded the number of connections specified in the exhpdm parms. (CONNECTIONS x DEVICELIMIT) where connections is the number of conncurrent dumps per drive and devicelimit is the max number of drives, although this can also be limited by availability - thus the first question. How are you controlling the number of dumps that are executing concurrently?
