E-mail puzzler
Greetings, I have been using MAILIT for a bit of time now to send e-mail to myself on my PC from VM. I am sending a fixed format 80 byte record CMS file. When I get the file on my PC through Microsoft Office Outlook sometimes the lines get concatenated together. For example, I am sending the following CMS file: The following printer(s) may be experiencing a problem: UNKNOWN has 6 file(s) older than 120 minutes Printer UNKNOWN spoolid 7409 - 1 day 22 hours 47 minutes old Printer UNKNOWN spoolid 7376 - 1 day 22 hours 52 minutes old Printer UNKNOWN spoolid 3612 - 2 days 22 hours 50 minutes old Printer UNKNOWN spoolid 3599 - 2 days 22 hours 52 minutes old Printer UNKNOWN spoolid 7362 - 1 day 22 hours 54 minutes old Printer UNKNOWN spoolid 6098 - 4 hours 10 minutes old Please verify with CP SMSG RSCS Q printer Q or CP SMSG RSCS Q SYS Q - E N D O F T R AN S M I S S I O N - And when I get it as mail on my PC it looks like The following printer(s) may be experiencing a problem: UNKNOWN has 6 file(s) older than 120 minutes Printer UNKNOWN spoolid 7409 - 1 day 22 hours 47 minutes old Printer UNKNOWN spoolid 7376 - 1 day 22 hours 52 minutes old Printer UNKNOWN spoolid 3612 - 2 days 22 hours 50 minutes old Printer UNKNOWN spoolid 3599 - 2 days 22 hours 52 minutes old Printer UNKNOWN spoolid 7362 - 1 day 22 hours 54 minutes old Printer UNKNOWN spoolid 6098 - 4 hours 10 minutes old Please verify with CP SMSG RSCS Q printer Q or CP SMSG RSCS Q SYS Q - E N D O F T R AN S M I S S I O N - When I use the TEST option of MAILIT, it looks good in my reader so I don't think it is MAILIT. I'm doing more testing but does anyone have any ideas why this is happening? Thanks, Mike
Sysprof Exec in z/vm 4.4
Well, we finally migrated to z/vm 4.4 two days ago from vm/esa 2.3. Most of our little fires are out. But here's a new problem for us..we tailor our Sysprof Exec to run an account exec before a users's profile exec. For some reason, Sysprof exec is not being run when we Ipl Cms or Ipl 190. Did something change with Sysprof Exec since vm/esa 2.3? Is it still automatically run as part of the CMS initialization procedure when a user logs on or reIpls CMS? Thanks for any help. We've even traced the original z/vm 4.4 Sysprof Exec and it's not being called? Mary Zervos VM Systems Programmer Binghamton University

Disabling OSA ports
We are just getting our feet wet with a Z9BC OSA adapters. I need to change the OAT. After some digging I found IOACMD SET_PARMS. I did a ioacmd set_parms 20 0 691 to disable the port with the following result IOACMD: Calling host OSA/SF... IOACMD: Back from host OSA/SF... IOACMD: ** IOACMD: Set parameters completed with the following result IOAK889E Physical port 0 is in use by image 0.1 UA 00 IOACMD: ** I must be missing something simple. Re: Sysprof Exec in z/vm 4.4
As noted by another listserv member, it's probably the need to resave INSTSEG. It can get really tough remembering all the things one needs to do to build, install, test, and move local mods into production. I started using the AUX files as a repository of such local information because that where I trip over it when needing to modify something. SYSPROF mods are only one of many, including vendor products. We use AUX files named AUXRS (for ouR Stuff) so they are easy to find, not being the name of any IBM or ISV AUX files. You may not want to bother with that technique. Here's an example... modify it to meet your needs if you wish: SYSPROF AUXRSD1 F 80 Trunc=80 Size=15 Line=0 Col=1 Alt=0 |...+1+2+3+4+5+6+7+ * * * Top of File * * * RS0040DS 501 RS040DS Update SYSPROF with local enhancements. * To create, be sure to copy the proper SYSPROF $EXEC to the A-disk * (EXECUPDT overwrites the SYSPROF EXEC on the same disk as the $EXEC)! * To update SYSPROF EXEC, you should: * COPY SYSPROF $EXEC fm = = A (OLDDATE REPLACE UNPACK -- See UNPACK! * XEDITSYSPROF $EXEC * (CTL DMSVM SID RS0040DS, then * EXECUPDT SYSPROF EXEC * (CTL DMSVM HISTory SID * Test the SYSPROF EXEC (esp. for syntax errors!) * COPY SYSPROF EXEC A = EXC040DS E (OLDDate REPLace * so VMFBLD won't complain later on. * COPY SYSPROF EXEC A = EXEC E (OLDDate REPLace ERASE * so we don't get mixed up. * then re-save the INSTSEG NSS, e.g. * CP IPL 190 CLEAR PARM NOSPROF INSTSEG NO MTSEG NO * VMFBLD PPF SEGBLD ESASEGS SEGBLIST INSTSEG ( ALL * * * End of File * * * Mike Walter Hewitt Associates Any opinions expressed herein are mine alone and do not necessarily represent the opinions or policies of Hewitt Associates. z/VM 5.2 CP INDICATE LOAD missing STORAGE utilization output
Hello, I'm debugging an old REXX exec which fails in z/VM 5.2 with the following command: 'PIPE CP IND LOAD', '| locate /STORAGE-/', '| xlate - blank % blank', '| specs w2 1', '| var PctStorage' It looks like the STORAGE utilization output is missing. Does anyone know of another way to obtain this from within a REXX exec? Thanks, Craig

Check your Outlook email options, recent versions have one to suppress extra line breaks. I don't know the algorithm used but I'd say the results tend to be unpredictable. Re: z/VM 5.2 CP INDICATE LOAD missing STORAGE utilization output
I had a similar problem with an exec when I went to 5.2. Apparently this STORAGE info was dropped as it was considered sort of meaningless or incorrect. No one, at that time, made a recommendation as to what to use instead, so I just removed the code. We used it for display purposes and never actually used it as part of a calculation. This is not necessarily a plug for the product, but we use ESAMON and I can get most of this type of info from it. It's been a very good and useful product for us. Steve G. Re: z/VM 5.2 CP INDICATE LOAD missing STORAGE utilization output
STORAGE has always been bogus. They finally took it out. The biggest conversion problem I've had, so far, in upgrading from z/.VM 5.1 to z/VM 5.2 is the changes that were made to the IND command. Not a show stopper. But it is going to take a while to rework the ind user exp output. I think there is some new goodies in there. I'm hoping that 5.2 has some commands that relate dataspace utilization. Like how many pages of a dataspace are in memory, how many are on the paging device, how many never used. I'm still hoping for a performance monitor, but in the mean time, knowing that some Linux image, went wild (get the video tape or DVD, Linux image gone wild!), and started using up lots of dataspace pages (for swapping). And since you can't get them back, easily, without taking the Linux image down,l it becomes important to find and correct these problems, before paging becomes too full. Re: z/VM 5.2 CP INDICATE LOAD missing STORAGE utilization output
Not to imply that the STORAGE value is meaningful, but for that LOCATE stage as-coded you really want STRLOCATE, not LOCATE. E.g. 'PIPE CP IND LOAD', '| STRlocate /STORAGE-/', '| xlate - blank % blank', '| specs w2 1', '| var PctStorage' You might want also to download PIPEDEMO and PDEM from http://vm.marist.edu/~pipeline/ PIPEDEMO makes it really easy to find this type of thing.
