SIZE of CSE area for dasd models bigger 3390-9

2008-06-12 Thread Fox Blue
Dear all,

I am not sure how big the CSE Area need to be on DASD bigger than 3390-9.

The planing manual shows only 3390-9, which has in fact 9 cylinders.

How big the CSA Area need to be on 3390-27 and 3390-54?

Thank you very much.

Best regards,
Fox

The number of cylinders listed for a 3390-9 is actually enough for a
3390-54. 9 cylinders can map all 65520 cylinders of a mod 54 and of
course the smaller mod 27. Maybe the table in the documentation
should say 3390-9 or bigger ..

SERVICE exec with RSU

2008-06-12 Thread Jim Bohnsack
I received electronic service for z/VM 5.3, RSU 7304. I am not clear on
interpreting the installation instructions. I received 4 files:

S7858796.SHIPDOC
S7858796.SHIPRSU1
S7858796.SHIPRSU2
S7858796.SHIPRSU3

My question or confusion is that is the fname and ftype that the SERVICE
exec needs. There are references to the ftype must be SERVLINK. If
so what do I do with the dup fnames? I see another reference saying
that the ftypes can be in the SHIPRSUn format that I received. I see a
reference to the service envelope needs to be on the 500 disk accessed
as C and another saying that it needs to be accessed as A.

I've used SERVICE before but for 7304 I ordered a tape.  I don't
remember using SERVICE for electronic service with more than one file.

What filemode does the service need to be on and what fname and ftype
does SERVICE want the files to be?

It's technically accurate becaues a disk with 65520 cylinder is still a
3390-9. Not that anyone calls them those... Bigger than those will be
called 3390-A and can go to something like 262,000 cylinders.

Technically, the mod-27 and mod-54 are 3390 model 9s with increased number
of cylinders; so the number is 9 cylinders for the CSE area (across the
board).

I just did service on 5.3. I used the Download Director to get the
s?.SHIPDOC   etc to my pc.
Then I uploaded to the mainframe (binary).
You need to use the filetype of SERVLINK when you DETERSE the binary
file.
Hope that helps.

I got mine thru ShopZ and I remembered having to decide if I wanted to
download them thru a browser or ftp. I chose browser and those 4
separate files are what were downloaded. Yes, I guess I meant RSU 5304.

I just tried it again. Starting with the z/VM Electronically Delivered
Service (CORective or RSU) Installation Instructions, I did step (1)
Upload Service Envelope(s) I followed the directions to use MS-DOS
Windows FTP.
(2) De-Compaction of Service Envelope(s) That worked like a charm.

(3) Installation of Service Envelope(s) on z/VM Host

For service envelop files in VMSES/E format (files with extensions of
SHIPTFSS, or SHIPDOCS or SHIPRSUn or SHIPDOC):

Follow the appropriate instructions listed below for the release of VM
you are running. (It says to go to Part 4 'Service Procedures' in the
z/VM Guide for Automated Installation and Service)

That tells you to enter SERVICE ALL envfn1 envfn2... but I have one name
and several SHIPRSUn files.

I'm going to call IBM and order a tape. It should be here by Monday.
There's got to be a better way.

Based on what Anne Crabtree replied, you upload the files to the z/VM
system BINARY FIXED 1024 and deterse then to SERVLINK file type. You
probably want to rename them to SHIPRSUn SERVLINK or SHIPDOCS SERVLINK
when you deterse the files.

Then you can run SERVICE ALL SHIPDOCS to get the documents and then
SERVICE ALL SHIPRSU1 SHIPRSU2 SHIPRSU3 to get the RSU loaded for PUT2PROD.

No problems with first level. 2nd level (VMTEST) in cms mode can run

Re: SERVICE exec with RSU

2008-06-12 Thread Jim Bohnsack
It's working!! No help from the documentation. The only thing you said,
Kim, that isn't necessary or wanted for an RSU is to do the SERVICE ALL
SHIPDOCS. One of the many pieces of documentation says that you don't
do that for an RSU, only for a COR. It went completely past me that
when the doc talks about files that with extensions of SHIPRSUn that
SHIPRSUn would be used as the file name and not the file type.
Extensions on pc files usually get translated into file types on VM.

I did call to order a tape and mentioned to the person on the call back
why I was doing it, he asked if I'd like to talk to someone who might be
able to shed some light on why I was having problems. I did, soon,
receive a call back, altho, by that time I was following Kim's advice.
I told the person who called why I was having a problem or what I was
not understanding and she agreed that the way it was written could be
confusing.

Kim Goldenberg wrote:

Based on what Anne Crabtree replied, you upload the files to the z/VM
system BINARY FIXED 1024 and deterse then to SERVLINK file type. You
probably want to rename them to SHIPRSUn SERVLINK or SHIPDOCS SERVLINK
when you deterse the files.

Then you can run SERVICE ALL SHIPDOCS to get the documents and then
SERVICE ALL SHIPRSU1 SHIPRSU2 SHIPRSU3 to get the RSU loaded for PUT2PROD.

RMSMASTR FSMKIN1100E Error from communication function 24, return

2008-06-12 Thread Les Geer (607-429-3580)
Has anyone run into the following running a DFSMSRM command from a second

level z/vm? and what corrected it?
FSMKIN1100E Error from communication function 24, return code = 15

Situation:
First level z/VM 5.2.0 runs VM:Tape and RMSMASTR connected to a VTS.
2nd level z/VM 5.2.0 just RMSMASTR connected to same VTS.
No problems with first level. 2nd level (VMTEST) in cms mode can run
commands okay. RMSMASTR appears to initialize (attach then detach tape
drive without errors) in 2nd level. Is there some sort of virtual ctc
needed between the 1st and 2nd level?

This is an IUCV error, the 15 indicates an authorization failure.
Do you have IUCV ALLOW in the RMSMASTR directory on the second level
system? RMSMASTR second level and first level are not aware of each
other nor do they communicate with each other.

In addition, the RMSMASTR directory should probably have:
IUCV *IDENT RESANY BLOBAL REVOKE

Hmmm ... I don't think a ISFC link is require to enable (3rd level)

through the real device cabling (whatever that may be). All (well most)
of our guests are hooked to the host via ISFC, so I never would have
noticed a failure in this case.

 Yes - IPL'd the 2nd level (VMTEST).

 The error code indicates a APPC connect error Not sure if

A network problem with no details and no diagram with addresses and subnet

Oldest VM on a System Z?

2008-06-12 Thread Lee Stewart
Hi... Does anyone know/remember the oldest (first) realease of VM that
would run on a Z processor?   I know z/VM 5.1 required a Z.  But what
from earlier releases would run on a Z?  4.4?  4.3?  4.2?

Thanks.

Will run and Is supported are two different things.

Anything that doesn't actually require 370 mode will, I think, run
natively.

And of course if you're willing to be creative, there's nothing
stopping you from building Hercules on z/Linux and running VM/370 or
indeed CP-67 on that. I strongly suspect that it would run faster
than the native iron it's emulating, even, on a z9 or z10.

According to the z900 announcement letter, the following VM
releases were supported at GA.

* z/VM 3.1.0
* VM/ESA 2.4.0
* VM/ESA 2.3.0
* VM/ESA 2.2.0

According to the z800 announcement letter, the following VM

* VM/ESA 2.4.0 with APARs VM62676, VM62811, VM62942 and VM62665
* z/VM 3.1.0
* z/VM 4.1.0
* z/VM 4.2.0 with APARs VM62938 and PQ51738 for HiperSockets

As you may remember, we announced z/VM 3.1 with the z900 and then

The other responses carefully avoid the subtle part of your question:
the difference between run on at least one particular z system or
run on the z system of your choice
You may not be able to get the hardware support for the latest ones...

IIRC z/VM 3.1 could run in either 32 or 64bit mode. I think there were
(by default) 2 CP Nuclei generated with a SYSGEN, one for each mode, and
a bootstrap that would load the correct one.
