It sounds like he is looking for something at the Volume level - more than
just the contents of a single MDISK. He would like a mapping on the
volume to show where all the mdisks are, owners, passwords, etc. The
concept is interesting but it opens a few cans of worms, one of which being
security. (Duck, I see Chuckie heading this way!!)

Re: EXECSTAT priority

2007-03-09 Thread Jim Vincent
It has to do with the CMS SET INSTSEG setting. If the critter in question
lives on a disk higher in the file mode of the INSTSEG setting, then that
copy is going to get the priority.

For instance ours is normal set to file mode L. I set it to A and copied
FILELIST EXEC from the 190 to my A disk. Execstat shows it will still
execute from memory. Set INSTSEG to L and execstat now says it will run
from disk.

q instseg
INSTSEG  = ON  L
Ready; T=0.01/0.01 12:07:58
set instseg on A
 Ready; T=0.01/0.01 12:08:09
execstat filelist exec
Ready; T=0.01/0.01 12:08:15
xcopy filelist exec s = = a
Ready; T=0.01/0.01 12:08:20
execstat filelist exec
Ready; T=0.01/0.01 12:08:21
set instseg on l
Ready; T=0.01/0.01 12:08:25
execstat filelist exec

I'm wondering what priority means in HELP EXECSTAT:

 With the RESident Option:

 Code Meaning

0 Exec exists in storage. Register 1 contains pointer to the
fileblock.

4 Exec exists in storage and there is another one on dasd that has a
higher priority. Register 1 contains a pointer to the fileblock.

I see no description of priority there, nor in HELP for EXECMAP or
EXECLOAD. I hoped it meant the copy on disk is newer but no.

 Ideas?

We are doing a VMDUMP for a 2G linux server and it is taking FOREVER.
If this was a production server we would be picking daggers out of
 places I can't mention here.

Paging is not too bad on the system (300/sec) and we set the share and
reserved for the guest up to maybe help, but nothing seems to get it
moving any. It is doing about 1000 spool records every 15-20 seconds
and we guestimated it would be about 524288 records; after about an hour
it is less than half done!!

Is this to be expected? Are we to expect VMDUMP to take that long for
these larger guests or do we have a situation we need to dig into?

hundreds of small servers didn't come cheaply either. Miggo

The last I heard, IFLs listed for $125,000 each. Has that

Dennis: Don't believe what you read in the press, especially the

Re: IBMLink 2000 Sending Files to my VM Reader

2007-01-10 Thread Jim Vincent
One option you can do is get the wget utility for Windows (see
http://www.gnu.org/software/wget/ ). It will allow you to get content from
https (ssl) sites. For instance, I have a little ditty that I use to grab
the current WAN IP address assigned on my home wireless router (which uses
https) via:

wget https://192.168.1.1/Status_Router.asp --no-check-certificate
--user=vincenj --password= --connect-timeout=2 --tries=1

Works like a champ.

For VM tools, there are other options like the current version of Charlotte
with SSL support. I have not dug into that one yet, but would like to
someday when things get quieter here... hahaha! Since WebRover uses the
Charlotte engine, I'd like to get WebRover to be able to do SSL too.
WebRover lets you get http/ftp content via a Pipe stage so it can be
manipulated quick and easy.

Re: REXX compiling / EXECLOAD

2007-01-04 Thread Jim Vincent
In my experience with compiling REXX my initial response would be no you
would not see much (if any) benefit. There are two general reasons for
compiling a REXX routine: to hide the contents from the casual observer or
to improve performance when the logic does a lot of repetitive things (code
loops).

For any case though, TEST it! In some cases compiling will cause the
performance to get worse; at best since you said the code is not
large/complex, I would bet you won't see enough difference to make it
worthwhile. And if you are EXECLOAD'ing it, compiling it usually
increases the size of the executable so memory consumption will be impacted
for the EXECLOAD.

Is there any performance benefit to compiling a REXX EXEC if it will be
EXECLOAD'd for the lifetime of it's use?

For example, I have a service machine which, upon startup, EXECLOADs
some EXECs it needs over and over. It/they remain EXECLOADd until the
service machine is shutdown. The EXEC is not particularly complex/large,
but does compiling it actually make any difference? Does EXECLOAD
tokenize/optimize the EXEC if it's not compiled?

Re: Automatic ReIPL

2006-11-07 Thread Jim Vincent
Let me see if I can help clear it up any. Or make it worse. ( I would
bet... oh never mind!)

If you always use CPLOAD MODULE as the name and that is the last module
used to IPL with -AND- a CP SET IPLPARMS was NOT used to change the
location of it, then CP will load that module on a re-IPL either via an
abend or SHUTDOWN REIPL.

What this means is, if you replace the CPLOAD MODULE with a new CPLOAD
MODULE, CP will load it when an IPL is done. It can't/won't load the old
version of it because it is not there anymore; an IPL is just that - an
Initial Program Load. It loads the program fresh - in this case the CPLOAD
MODULE.

Nothing is preserved when a re-IPL is done. The old nuc is burnt toast
on an abend/re-IPL and the load process gets a fresh copy from the parm
disk whether it is the original CPLOAD, a new one or a plain text file with
your grocery list in it.

I've seen here is that both an automatic abend and SHUTDOWN REIPL will
IPL the module that's currently named CPLOAD MODULE. I always install
maintenance with SHUTDOWN REIPL, and QUERY CPLOAD verifies that I've
IPLed the new module. I had one incident where I'd staged a new module,
and before I could do SHUTDOWN REIPL, the system abended and
auto-restarted with the new module. Of course, the fix for the abend
 was in the new module.

Thanks for the responses to far. We definitely use MSG.
 I need to elaborate.
I have an EXEC that runs on my userid, lets call that user STEVE
The PropOp userid is HAL g
The EXEC I run on STEVE basically edits what is typed in and if the data
typed in meets the req'd criteria, it repackages the input, adds a
 few pieces (key words)
and then does a CP MSG HAL repackaged input.
HAL is sitting there waiting for something to come his way. The specific

char string will kick off an EXEC based on definitions in the RTABLE.
The first thing that EXEC (on HAL) does is to display a message that
it is starting (time stamp, etc.)
 I never see this message.
  . . . even more detail . . .
The command I issue from STEVE to HAL is
MSG HAL PUT file name file type and then some more key
words for the EXEC on HAL
This entire string is never longer than 95 characters. The length
can from vary from 80 chars to 95 chars.
PUT is the keyword in the RTABLE. When the file name is 7 chars or
less it works fine, when file name is 8, it
appears to never get to HAL. The problem is I don't know if it's
getting to HAL and the RTABLE is ignoring it
or if it plain doesn't get to HAL.
As mentioned earlier, this all worked in VM 4.3 but has appeared
to quite working in VM 5.2

 Thanks,
 Steve G.

Re: Draft outline for z/VM New Parents Guide posted

2006-08-01 Thread Jim Vincent
Nice start!

Chapter 8 could be Book 2. That really could end up being one very long
chapter unless you stick very close to the IBM default recommendations,
You know, like we all do... on days that end in z. The
maintenance/service philosophies from different folks could be chapters in
themselves. There is of course only one correct way to do service and
that would be, well, mine.

I have tried to develop my SHARE VMSES/E Intro session and Lab into
something that most folks can walk away from and understand more about what
VMSES/E is up to and how to apply service to VM. This is one hour lecture
and one hour lab, but it would be very easy to make it much longer given
all the possible scenario of maintenance (PTF, many PTFs, missing pre-req,
RSU, new release/version, second level -vs- first level, etc etc). Then
beyond that is something I stress about why learning what VMSES/E is up to
is a Good Thing. One day these folks are going to want/need to do
something more advanced like a local mod, or installing a product that has
mods or replacement TXT files, etc. Having the 'basic advanced topics'
documented for reference would certainly help them get started.

I look forward to seeing this idea bloom more!

Chapter 3 note - applying the most recent RSU/COR is included in the VM One
Page Install sheet. So it should be a normal thing in a virgin install of
VM for the person to use the automatic tools (SERVICE PUT2PROD). Those
steps are definitely included there and seem to be well documented for
normal/basic service in the Service Guide for folks that want all the
details. The only case where SERVICE would or may not be used is if the
sysprog decided to futz with the PPF file(s) and changes the defaults as
soon as the system was installed.

I could go on and on and on... oh look, shiny things! Gotta run...

Your steps are spot-on except for one small part. You do not have to let
the linux guest do a DEFINE MDISK nor have class A. Simply add the MDISK
entry to the directory and then on the linux guest, do a CP LINK * cuu cuu
MR to get access to it. Make sense?

In fact, there is a good paper on limiting the privilege class and commands
allowed for a linux guest. It is a good read and gives some excellent

First, apologies as I am a VM newbie. (And a linux newbie, for that
 matter).

We would like to be able to add dasd to a linux's logical volume group on

the fly. We have been able to do this by making sure all our dasd is
online
at ipl, then we det the dev from system, att it to our userid, format it,

att it back to system and then do a define mdisk from the linux vm
userid.
We then add it to user direct for the next time the linux user logs off
and
 back on.
The trouble with this is, the linux guest must have A priveledge and
devmaint, which is undesirable. Does anyone know of a way around this?
Ideally, what I'd like is the ability to specify a userid on the define
mdisk, so that another ID could do it for the linux guest. As I see it,
we
either use devmaint or have to logoff/on the guest.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

 Mary Anne

LNKNOPAS or equivalent link authority - or by using the MULT password of

try logging on to MONWRITE and before tapping enter at the CMS prompt,
enter: ACC (NOPROF instead. That will start CMS but not execute the

least not the time() function that Mike specified. Is there still an
 extra
library such as the one that Princeton (I think) used to supply? I'm
 on
 z/VM 4.4.
 Jim

To which Alan replied Not that I've heard of. .

I have a feeling you might be thinking of the Pipelines Runtime
 Distribution. See: http://vm.marist.edu/~pipeline/

Re: Update on z/VM 5.2.0 problem

2006-03-29 Thread Jim Vincent
...RSU 0502 for z/VM 5.2 was just released... Arg! A victim of my own
bad reading. I saw 5202RSU and typed 0502.

It is z/VM 5.2 RSU LVL 0601 and/or 5202RSU. Clear, eh? Depending on how
you look at it, it is either the 1st RSU of 2006 (0601) or Verion 5 release
2 RSU #2 (5.2 + #02 == 5202RSU).  Either way it is the same.

The easy way to do this: Track APAR VM63863 or PTF UM97520. They will
always contain the current (and correct!) RSU info for z/VM 5.2

Re: Update on z/VM 5.2.0 problem

2006-03-28 Thread Jim Vincent
I can't/won't speak for IBM but I doubt it. If you can upgrade and are
thinking of V5, V5.1 is very stable and has done us well since we had it.
z/VM 5.2 is really good and especially useful for the 2G storage relief.
Chances are you will be okay with V5.2 - you just have to keep in mind it
is new and may need a little TLC. That means keeping an eye on the APAR
list and doing preventive maintenance. Going with z/VM 5.1 is IMHO a good
choice if you don't yet need the improvements 5.2 offers.

Either way, you can't guarantee no outages. You just have to weigh the
risks and benefits of each release.

Because of the growing pains with 5.2, is support for z/VM 4.4 going
 to be extended beyond 9/06?

 Thanks,
 Alyce

RSU 0502 for z/VM 5.2 was just released - I would recommend that to
 start
with. There have been a number of HTT001 abends due to various page
translations too that you should also get the fixes for. Some
 additional
ones I presented in our Early Experiences session at SHARE include:

VM63630 UM31541 CONTROL REGISTER 12 IN SNAPDUMP IS NOT ACCURATE
 VM63785 UM31588 ABENDFRE016 HCPCDT RELEASES A RCDBK
VM63808 UM31611 AFTER AN UNPLANNED HYPERSWAP VM CAN BECOME

VM63971 UM31705 ABENDHTT001 INCORRECT USE OF FREED TRQBK
 VM63974 HCPSPO1838E PERMANENT I/O ERROR SPXTAPE RESTORE

There may be others, but these are some of the big hitters we have found
 so
far and some may not all apply to you. Considering your system up-time
requirements, you would do well to build a test system with all the
 fixes
applied and let it settle in a little with your hardware/software
configuration. z/VM 5.2 was a jump in advancement for storage relief,
 so
it is certainly a good thing to go to but it is still seeing a few
 growing
 pains.

We have z/VM 5.2 on 12 systems here - all but 1 are production systems.
Generally they have been running very well. As I mentioned, a couple
HTT001 abends hit us along with a pesky HPC010 that is still eluding us.

The z version is simply TRACK (or TRACK for VM, to be technically correct),
although you can build the module to be anything you would like it called.

Current version is available at http://vm.marist.edu/track/

To a lesser degree, the freeware tool TRACK will allow you to see
at least part of the open conslog. In any event, I'd HIGHLY recommend
downloading Track (is the current z-version still called TrackXA ??)
 for general problem sniffing.

Agreed about CA's VM support team.

 VM:Spool - Whenever someone reports a problem with a Linux instance, I =
 use
this first to examine that server's open console log. It's a definite =
 time
 saver.

I might also add the CA support team in Herndon VA is second to none!

Re: Trying to ftp a file from operatns

2006-03-17 Thread Jim Vincent
Where are you FTPing to and what directory are you cd into ? If this is a
local ftp (not to IBM) then the login or cd should have shown you that
you have a R/O access to the disk, something like:

230-MAINT logged in; working directory = MAINT 191 (ReadOnly)
230 write access currently unavailable

If you are FTPing to IBM, then be sure you are in /s390/toibm/vm
