Re: EXECSTAT priority
It has to do with the CMS SET INSTSEG setting. If the critter in question lives on a disk higher in the file mode of the INSTSEG setting, then that copy is going to get the priority. For instance ours is normal set to file mode L. I set it to A and copied FILELIST EXEC from the 190 to my A disk. Execstat shows it will still execute from memory. Re: IBMLink 2000 Sending Files to my VM Reader
One option you can do is get the wget utility for Windows (see http://www.gnu.org/software/wget/ ). It will allow you to get content from https (ssl) sites. For instance, I have a little ditty that I use to grab the current WAN IP address assigned on my home wireless router (which uses https) via: wget https://192.168.1.1/Status_Router.asp --no-check-certificate --user=vincenj --password= --connect-timeout=2 --tries=1 Works like a champ. For VM tools, there are other options like the current version of Charlotte with SSL support. I have not dug into that one yet, but would like to someday when things get quieter here... hahaha! Since WebRover uses the Charlotte engine, I'd like to get WebRover to be able to do SSL too. Re: REXX compiling / EXECLOAD
In my experience with compiling REXX my initial response would be no you would not see much (if any) benefit. There are two general reasons for compiling a REXX routine: to hide the contents from the casual observer or to improve performance when the logic does a lot of repetitive things (code loops). For any case though, TEST it! In some cases compiling will cause the performance to get worse; at best since you said the code is not large/complex, I would bet you won't see enough difference to make it worthwhile. And if you are EXECLOAD'ing it, compiling it usually increases the size of the executable so memory consumption will be impacted for the EXECLOAD. ___ James Vincent Systems Engineering Consultant Nationwide Services Co., Technology Solutions Mainframe, z/VM and z/Linux Support One Nationwide Plaza 3-20-13 Columbus OH 43215-2220 U.S.A Voice: (614) 249-5547Fax: (614) 677-7681 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] The IBM z/VM Operating System IBMVM@LISTSERV.UARK.EDU wrote on 01/04/2007 02:12:41 PM: IBMVM@LISTSERV.UARK.EDU Is there any performance benefit to compiling a REXX EXEC if it will be EXECLOAD'd for the lifetime of it's use? Re: Automatic ReIPL
Let me see if I can help clear it up any. Or make it worse. ( I would bet... oh never mind!) If you always use CPLOAD MODULE as the name and that is the last module used to IPL with -AND- a CP SET IPLPARMS was NOT used to change the location of it, then CP will load that module on a re-IPL either via an abend or SHUTDOWN REIPL. What this means is, if you replace the CPLOAD MODULE with a new CPLOAD MODULE, CP will load it when an IPL is done. It can't/won't load the old version of it because it is not there anymore; an IPL is just that - an Initial Program Load. It loads the program fresh - in this case the CPLOAD MODULE. Nothing is preserved when a re-IPL is done. The old nuc is burnt toast on an abend/re-IPL and the load process gets a fresh copy from the parm disk whether it is the original CPLOAD, a new one or a plain text file with your grocery list in it. ___ James Vincent Systems Engineering Consultant Nationwide Services Co., Technology Solutions Mainframe, z/VM and z/Linux Support One Nationwide Plaza 3-20-13 Columbus OH 43215-2220 U.S.A Voice: (614) 249-5547Fax: (614) 677-7681 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] The IBM z/VM Operating System IBMVM@LISTSERV.UARK.EDU wrote on 11/07/2006 11:12:37 AM: IBMVM@LISTSERV.UARK.EDU Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question, or John's answer. Re: Draft outline for z/VM New Parents Guide posted
Nice start! Chapter 8 could be Book 2. That really could end up being one very long chapter unless you stick very close to the IBM default recommendations, You know, like we all do... on days that end in z. The maintenance/service philosophies from different folks could be chapters in themselves. There is of course only one correct way to do service and that would be, well, mine. I have tried to develop my SHARE VMSES/E Intro session and Lab into something that most folks can walk away from and understand more about what VMSES/E is up to and how to apply service to VM. This is one hour lecture and one hour lab, but it would be very easy to make it much longer given all the possible scenario of maintenance (PTF, many PTFs, missing pre-req, RSU, new release/version, second level -vs- first level, etc etc). Then beyond that is something I stress about why learning what VMSES/E is up to is a Good Thing. One day these folks are going to want/need to do something more advanced like a local mod, or installing a product that has mods or replacement TXT files, etc. Having the 'basic advanced topics' documented for reference would certainly help them get started. Re: Draft outline for z/VM New Parents Guide posted
Chapter 3 note - applying the most recent RSU/COR is included in the VM One Page Install sheet. So it should be a normal thing in a virgin install of VM for the person to use the automatic tools (SERVICE PUT2PROD). Those steps are definitely included there and seem to be well documented for normal/basic service in the Service Guide for folks that want all the details. The only case where SERVICE would or may not be used is if the sysprog decided to futz with the PPF file(s) and changes the defaults as soon as the system was installed. Re: Define MDisk Question
Your steps are spot-on except for one small part. You do not have to let the linux guest do a DEFINE MDISK nor have class A. Simply add the MDISK entry to the directory and then on the linux guest, do a CP LINK * cuu cuu MR to get access to it. Make sense? We then add it to user direct for the next time the linux user logs off and back on. The trouble with this is, the linux guest must have A priveledge and devmaint, which is undesirable. Does anyone know of a way around this? Ideally, what I'd like is the ability to specify a userid on the define mdisk, so that another ID could do it for the linux guest. Re: Update on z/VM 5.2.0 problem
I can't/won't speak for IBM but I doubt it. If you can upgrade and are thinking of V5, V5.1 is very stable and has done us well since we had it. z/VM 5.2 is really good and especially useful for the 2G storage relief. Chances are you will be okay with V5.2 - you just have to keep in mind it is new and may need a little TLC. That means keeping an eye on the APAR list and doing preventive maintenance. Going with z/VM 5.1 is IMHO a good choice if you don't yet need the improvements 5.2 offers. Either way, you can't guarantee no outages. You just have to weigh the risks and benefits of each release. ___ James Vincent Systems Engineering Consultant Nationwide Services Co., Technology Infrastructure Engineering Mainframe, z/VM and z/Linux Support One Nationwide Plaza 3-25-02 Columbus OH 43215-2220 U.S.A Voice: (614) 249-5547Fax: (614) 677-7681 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] The IBM z/VM Operating System IBMVM@LISTSERV.UARK.EDU wrote on 03/28/2006 02:05:02 PM: IBMVM@LISTSERV.UARK.EDU Because of the growing pains with 5.2, is support for z/VM 4.4 going to be extended beyond 9/06?
