RE: [ilugd] Re: ILUG-D website
I had searched for a long time for a truly easy to use Internet gateway solution based on Linux. Obviously i could have set things up myself since everything needed is already a part of every distro. I neither had the time nor the experience to try something like that. Last week i found what i find is the easiest and quickest way to install an Internet gateway. The solution from www.clarkconnect.org comes in the form of a bootable CD image that is based on RH9. The installer takes over and installs the whole setup very painlessly. In 30 mins of putting the CD in the drive i had a reasonable Firewall, Email Server with spam filtering and Anti virus scanning AND a webmail solution, Squid proxy with content filtering, status reports and whole lot of other stuff. The best part is everything was controllable with a very easy to use web interface to control each part of the setup. This is an ideal solution for a small office/home especially if you are a newbie :) like me. I am bowled over with the product and have spent some time adding on stuff to really make this a fantastic server for my office. The ISO is about 300megs so if anyone is interested but doesn't want to download it, just let me know and i will burn you a copy. - Ankur. ___ ilugd mailinglist -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/

Re: [ilugd] Package Installation Problem
Utsav Handa wrote: The package is of the ( gnome+-2.2.1.tar.gz ) form. Despite the hype you hear regarding the compiling of source code, you do not have to compile source to perform installation. Personally I compile source code only in the following cases - When no RPM packages can be found (extremely rare case) - When someone puts a gun on my head (This has not happened till date) The reply below was sent to a newbie by Rick Moen (editor of linuxgazette.net) regarding the installation process of Xine. Hopefully, you will find it useful too. Start quote Let's review the ways to install new software into a Linux distribution such as Red Hat 9. First, you have the binary packages included on your distribution's CD-ROMs. Absent a compelling reason to the contrary, that should be the first place you look, because they're guaranteed compatible with your system, cryptographically signed by fairly trustworthy people, and are made easy to install. In this case, very likely you already checked, and found that Xine isn't included in your distribution. Second, there are third-party repositories of software precompiled and packaged (by sundry individuals) for your particular distribution. E.g., the http://freshrpms.net/ repository has collections for all major distributions (and specifically for their individual releases) that use the RPM package format. Warning: Be careful about which collection at that site you draw from. Don't install an RPM designed for Mandrake, SuSE, Conectiva, TurboLinux, etc. -- just ones for Red Hat. (Yes, you can sometimes get away with those others, but don't try.) Don't try to install an RPM compiled for the DEC Alpha or PowerPC processor, given that you're running RH9 for x86. It's even best to stick to packages intended specifically for RH9, rather than for RH8/7.x, Fedora Core, etc. Third, for a while longer, you can get package _updates_ from Red Hat via its up2date program, pulling packages from the Red Hat Network updating service. This is a very worthwhile facility, Fourth, you can use tools to acquire and install packages from repositories such as FreshRPMs smoothly and automatically, taking care of dependencies (required packages needed to make the desired package work), using package-handling tools such as yum and Conectiva's port of apt-get to RPM. Last, there are of course source-code tarballs (.tar.gz archives), which you can with varying amounts of effort and frustration compile and install. Note that unless you _also_ master the arcane art of making your own RPM archives from source (writing the spec file contained therein, which controls the RPM build process), your package-management system won't be aware of the software's presence -- a disadvantage. Compiling from source will therefore be usually a last resort relative to the other options, for any properly lazy sysadmin. Therefore, I recommend that you start at http://freshrpms.net/, the FreshRPMs site. It has everything you need to get started. who else has some proactive, tangible steps on what we can do that leads to results? I suggest a mass SMS campaign to raise public awareness! -- ams funny. hey! am serious about this. if i had the time, ams, and the inclination, i could spend half-a-day and dig out or buy loads of data on you, and that's not funny. the same is true for me or for anybody else out there. so, how do we start a Quit Databasing Us movement? To defeat an army, hit one of them with such might that the rest disappear. - Unknown. Indian law is funny in itself(specially the IT part). We need a lawyer to find out the funniest part of it and then sue one of the mighty players(eg. indiatimes). The rest will disappear(atleast hide). I dont think ILUGD alone has enough resources(intention?) to fund such a project. We need some IT NGO to fund this movement. BTW ...good one ams. RE: [ilugd] [OT] Spy trackers in Indiatimes mailers?
india has a pathetic stance on spyware, privacy issues, email harvesting, Agreed!!! I just (for the first time in my life -- after signing in yahoo for more than 7 years) read the Yahoo's Date Protection Policy. Source: http://privacy.yahoo.com/ Yahoo! takes your privacy seriously. Please read the following to learn more about our privacy policy... 1) collection of address, email, mobile, res numbers, etc., while filling up most forms for banks etc. no clear-cut policy with liability responsibility on default mentioned. This policy covers how Yahoo! treats personal information that Yahoo! collects and receives, including information related to your past use of Yahoo! products and services. Personal information is information about you that is personally identifiable like your name, address, email address, or phone number, and that is not otherwise publicly available. This policy does not apply to the practices of companies that Yahoo! does not own or control or to people that Yahoo! does not employ or manage. 2) no policy on sale or hire of such databases to third party or sub-contractors. or to other marketing services. Yahoo! does not rent, sell, or share personal information about you with other people or nonaffiliated companies except to provide products or services you've requested, when we have your permission, or under the following circumstances: We provide the information to trusted partners who work on behalf of or with Yahoo! under confidentiality agreements. These companies may use your personal information to help Yahoo! communicate with you about offers from Yahoo! and our marketing partners. However, these companies do not have any independent right to share this information. 4) spam, marketing junk material need not have any real responsibility Yahoo! uses information for the following general purposes: to customize the advertising and content you see, fulfill your requests for products and services, improve our services, contact you, conduct research, and provide anonymous reporting for internal and external clients. 5) if you ever ask total strangers who call you on marketing calls, where they caught hold of your contact details, they refuse to reveal their source, and promptly hang up. DO we really care to cross check or try to become so reactive that we can find the root cause for it other than just banging on the poor fellow??? Do we care to read all this GYAN written about the privacy before actually signing in or filling any form??? I couldn't find even a drop of it on Indiatimes...If any one finds it plz do let me know) Are we *really* willing to stop using there services just because they don't have any defined Data Protection Policy for there customers??? I wish to do something about this. Who else has some proactive, tangible steps on what we can do that leads to results? We need to put awareness in the general public that this is harmful and will cause a slow poison in us. This is for sure that many of us (including me) care a damm! about it and take it very likely until it actually irritate us and we start crying and screaming for the procedure and policy of various companies... :-( let's try those steps on indiatimes for a start for the spyware email they sent sandip. I am there with you will all my TAN, MAN and DHAN... until it actually affects my job and doesn't involve a Police ruffart in it... I am scared of police... ;o) ___ ilugd mailinglist -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/

Re: [ilugd] query regarding SAN switch
A SAN Switch is usually a fibre channel switch, which is used for data communication only. So all devices on this fibre channel switch can see SAN storage.
