[ilugd] Defragmentation Issue
hi, The output of df -kh gives: #df -kh FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/1/hda654G 51G 0 100% / I beleive its a defragmentation problem. But when I give #defragfs -q /dev/1/hda6 It gives: Device mounted, but not type jfs! Please help. Hi, I am not able to view punjabi fonts on Punjabi Firefox (version 1.0.4running on Redhat 9.0) I tried a lot in Preferences and have installed kde3-i18n-pa-3.3.0-3.noarch.rpm and punjali-0.2-2.i386.rpm but still not able to view them. [ilugd] Apache Using old version of python!!!
I upgraded my python to 2.3 from 2.2 but Apache (V 2.0.4) is taking old libraries for processing. I also made a soft link redirecting the old files to new files but of no help... [ilugd] xmms not working properly
I am playing mp3 songs in xmmms on RH 9.0. I have installed xmms and xmms-mp3, the status bar moves through the file and the visualization moves quickly but there is no sound in my speakers. I have recently transfered a big database on my master node of a 4 node openSSI
Cluster... The system is working fine but sometimes, I get following errors:

[ilugd] Changing partition size without formatting
Hey Guys, I installed postgres in our linux server. I didn't see the partion size of /usr. It is just 7 GB and rest 73 GB is spare in /var. How can I give a part of /var to /usr without formatting both of them? If PgSQL is going to be your main application, leave /var with the huge disk space. 7GB for /usr is fine, since /usr doesn't grow significantly after installation and setup; /var, however, holds the databases and is likely to expand with time. I'm pleased to release Nmap 3.55. It includes dozens of changes. The coolest is MAC address detection and vendor lookup. That can be very useful for systems/network administrators trying to track machines with dynamic IPs. It also augments OS detection in determining what a system is -- a system with a Cisco ethernet card is probably a router. Thanks to Beirne Konarski (beirne(a)neo.rr.com) for reporting the problem. o If a user attempts -PO (the letter O), print an error suggesting that they probably mean -P0 (Zero) to disable ping scanning. o Applied a couple patches (with minor changes) from Oliver Eikemeier (eikemeier(a)fillmore-labs.com) which fix an edge case relating to decoy scanning IP ranges that must be sent through different interfaces, and improves the Nmap response to certain error codes returned by the FreeBSD firewall system. Whoever asks the questions expects guidance Giving guidance or pointing/redirecting towards the right track is acceptabe but if someone expects that anyone will come physically and solve the problem and won't charge anything for it is a wague point... Open Source does not mean that you don't have a right to earn your bread and butter... Millions of people are charging heavily for training and support and that is very much appropiate... What a load of crap. There are plenty of companies trying to make and making money on open source software. But moving on from Stallman, in particular, perhaps Eric Raymond might be a more presentable character - as he debated Stallman specfically on this subject. That's the whole point of OPEN and Free (as in speech). Its a democracy and you're entitled to your opinion. Open source projects, like MySQL, RedHat's distro, Gnome, KDE, QT, Lynuxworks are in it to make money. So is our little shop... And then there's IBM - a company with 4 times the anual revenue of MSFT. You can bet they're in it for the money. ORCL too - they're moving to complete support for Linux. installed fedora, and it disappeared. Were your speakers really close to your mouse cable? We have similar issues here at our office. Whenever a cell phone within close proximity to a PC and speakers/headphones rings, you can hear the speakers buzzing/hear buzzing in your headphones. Nahi baba! This may not be the reason for that as it vanished as soon as the system was upgaraded. According to *me* it is due to some Linux Maniac 'bhoot/ghost' that was there to find the bugs in RH8 and couldn't find the reason of his existance in Fedora so ran away as soon as upgraded. sendmail is unable to get the MX record of the domain This is the case when the mail server is unable to send mails on a single domain and its working perfect on other domains. ## but when I try sending mail to *anywhere* outside say abc.com it says ## connecting to abc.com via esmtp Then DNS may not be the prime issue rather relaying can be a problem. Contact your ISP, if they have properly given a relay to your IPs. Or you can make your own SMTP server without using the ISP one. Edit /etc/sendmail.cf and change 127.0.0.1 -- Public IP And vi /etc/mail/relay-domains and give the IP block of your network. You can use this as your SMTP server. HTH... Are you configuring ur own sendmail??? If yes -- Check the entry in /etc/mail/local-host-names (give the domain name in that). Also check the MX records in DNS. They should point properly with the reverse lookup zone configured. Can be a bandwidth issues also but it's a rare case. The *Mailer-Deamon* send back will tell u the whole story :) HTH... Hi Dheerendar, How are you doing?? For configuring a firewall in Linux Machine, iptables is the best option. Iptables restrict the flow of incoming and outgoing packets on the base of policies you make. The policies are considered from top to bottom. For making policies using iptables, man iptables is the best resource but you can also refer to http://www.faqs.org/docs/iptables/ Please don't forget to issue iptables-save command in the end and restarting the iptables daemon. Hi Sandeep, We also had such scenario in my previous organization. I successfully did that by using Pools in squid, wherein you can manage the bandwidth pools on IP base... You can also do that in CISCO by either using QoS or rate-limit based on IPs. HTH... No I was just suggesting that rude(which apparently only I felt) comments to linux newbies from Linux gurus can act as a detterent to newbies from being a part of Linux community. Some initial mouth feeding could resolve this? Why we guys always have an escapist attitude??? We never want to open a book or document and dream that some day some magician will come with his magic stick, will make a liquid of the book and will put it in our brain... I *believe* that no one in this group will refuse to answer a sub query on a query (provided you have made a sincere effort to tackle that... Oh I dont know! But this is similar to reinventing the wheel. Something GNU is against.] To a tribe that has seen a wheel for the first time, isnt it better for the world if the tribe is shown how a wheel is used rather than handling them a manual they can't read. Hi Folks, I configured NFS a few days back, and after giving #tcpdump command, I was shown that the Ethernet is running in promiscuous mode and a huge amount of packets were coming in and out of the poor box!!! Can anyone throw some light on it...? What exactly is promiscuous mode? I would appreciate it deep from my heart if someone explains it deeply... I searched for some sample lilo.conf and there was no mistake. 2) used 2-3 floppy bootable linux distributions but was unseccussful. 3) since i can't go into dos, i can't use loadlin. i used a dos bootable floppy and tried loadlin from there but to no avail. 4) I even used the RHL 8.0 first CD to get into the rescue mode and try from there. but it says that there aren't any linux partitions present in the hard disk. ufff, there are i guess because explore2fs is able to read the partitions. NOW WHAT SHOULD I DO, I NEED LINUX TO STAND UP AND START RUNNING. Just the day before I lost linux, i apt-get_ed it. But the target is that while the user logs into the Red Hat Linux machine, he should be prompted for a password and after the user gives *Enter* as a password, he should be able to login. Correct! To be more precise: The standard form of VACUUM is best used with the goal of maintaining a fairly level steady-state usage of disk space. The standard form finds old tuples and makes their space available for re-use within the table, but it does not try very hard to shorten the table file and return disk space to the operating system. If you need to return disk space to the operating system you can use VACUUM FULL --- but whats the point of releasing disk space that will only have to be allocated again soon? Moderately frequent standard VACUUMs are a better approach than infrequent VACUUM FULLs for maintaining heavily-updated tables. Recommended practice for most sites is to schedule a database-wide VACUUM once a day at a lowusage time of day, supplemented by more frequent vacuuming of heavily-updated tables if necessary. (If you have multiple databases in an installation, dont forget to vacuum each one; the vacuumdb script may be helpful.) Use plain VACUUM, not VACUUM FULL, for routine vacuuming for space recovery. VACUUM FULL is recommended for cases where you know you have deleted the majority of tuples in a table, so that the steady-state size of the table can be shrunk substantially with VACUUM FULLs more aggressive approach. If you have a table whose contents are deleted completely every so often, consider doing it with TRUNCATE rather than using DELETE followed by VACUUM. Hi group, Can any one plz give me some good documentation on FreeSwan on Redhat Linux. I was trying to configure VPN on my Linux Box but was failed to that. Can any one guide me how to that.
