register to any public entity. the public entity may be a school, college
principal, vidhayak, road, manifesto, post master, some legislative bill,
public comapny, NGO etc. ie anything that in anyway affects our people's
life at large.

this must have big access level on the priority thats one should be able to
report by phone, sms, site and anyother communication device that has much
reachability to rural india.

also i think it must be necessarily like wikipedia. and we need registered
volunteers, that may register such public entities and then public access
that can put views almost about anything and in any
form(video/audio/pics/text..).

i think i am overwhelmed with the idea, so i should stop here.

 Everyone,

This may not be completely off-topic - true freedom depends on individuals
 making well informed decisions.

I have decided to start a website which will provide a sort of score card
for all political parties and political individuals based on an objective
and fact based criteria. Amongst other things I plan to document and
permanently store all statements/decisions/actions by public figures. I
 feel
it's needed and has the potential to provide a deterrent to political
parties from relying on the fickle memories of the Indian public.

Of course, everything including the source code will be either under a
 Free
software license or in public domain.

The primary goal is to make the database as comprehensive as possible
 while
retaining objectivity and balanced opinions. I feel (perhaps somewhat
counter-intuitively) that both these aims can be achieved by making it
completely open, perhaps by ensuring that a structure of checks and
 balances
operates automatically, pushing good opinions to the top (something like
 stackoverflow?).

So I'm looking for ideas and collaborators on how to do all this -

   1. Create a permanent data format for storage and retrieval of event
details including actions and intentions of individuals and the context
   surrounding them.
   2. An objective and automatic criteria for scoring each individual based
   on their history.
   3. A system that enables everyone to participate easily and in a
   structured fashion.
   4. A system of checks and balances that ensures that only the best
opinions are the most visible ones, while still giving non-mainstream
opinions a chance to become popular.
   5. A convenient user interface that presents all the information in the
easiest way possible (Natural language search anyone?).

I apologise if I seem incoherent and/or generic. I don't have any idea of
what such a system could look like. Infact I just came up with this idea
after seeing all that has been happening in our democratic country
 today.
We have become desensitised and forgetful, and not on purpose. I believe
 the
situation can be improved by providing the public with enough context to
 make better decisions.

[ilugd] Webcast of APNIC training course on 29 May 2006

2006-05-26 Thread Kapil Chawla
Apologies for cross postings.

Dear APNIC members and friends,

For the first time, APNIC will webcast the Internet Resource Management
Essentials (IRME) training course, live from the APNIC office, on 29th
May 2006 from 10:00AM to 04:30PM (UTC+10).

IRME is a one-day course designed for Internet professionals. It is
aimed particularly at those responsible for administering and managing
Internet resources, including IP managers, senior hostmasters and
network engineers. By webcasting it live, we hope to make it easier than
ever before for our members and the broader community to participate in
APNIC training.

Best of all, joining the training webcast is free. There is no need to
register in advance - just set aside the time to watch the webcast. You
will also be able to use a chat interface on the APNIC web site to ask
live questions and get immediate responses from the trainers.

More information about the IRME training course is available at:

http://www.apnic.net/training/courses/irm-e.html

The webcast will be available from 10:00AM (UTC+10) on 29 May 2006 at
the following link:

More details about this webcast are available at:

Re: [ilugd] Shell script to run 1 cron at a time

2006-05-02 Thread Kapil Sethi
Hi Abhishek,

I checked the mails after a long time so my suggestions are late. Anyways I
hope it helps.

=

Dear Friends,
I again have a question(looks like i have a lot of questions:) )
I need a shell script run as a cron to do the following task,
1)Do 'ps -ef' or with other arguments of 'ps ' and see whether a
particular process is executing. Pl. tell me what are the best parameters
of 'ps' to search for a particular process
2) If yes do nothing.
3)If no runs that same process.
4)Logs all messages to a file
5)Logs all error messages to another file.
I am a novice at shell script.
Pl. help me give some inputs , regarding the best parameters /arguments of
'ps' and whas the method of logging error and normal messages.
Thakns,
--
Regards,
Abhishek Jain

==

In situations like above, I prefer to let cron do the job of launching as
scheduled at regular intervals.

I would let the script check if any previous instance is running. If there
is no previous instance then continue else exit gracefuly

echo Starting script at `date`
if [ -f /var/run/script.lck ]; then
echo Old Lock file found
PID1=`/var/run/script.lck`
if [ -z `ps -ef | grep $PID1 | grep -v grep` ]; then
echo Looks previous instance exited uncleanly
echo $$ /var/run/script.lck
echo Starting new instance
else
echo Previous instance already running
exit 1
fi
else
echo $$ /var/run/script.lck
echo Starting new instance
fi

and at the end

rm -f /var/run/script.lck

cron can redirect the output and errors from the script to separate files.

think fat32 is goos option of reusability of the device across
platform i.e. windows/linux

Secondly : are there an restrictions on how large the FAT32 partition
 can be .

Thirdly will rsync work to back up from a ext3 drive to a FAT32 drive
and how reliable will this be

Lastly is this the right command

 cfdisk /media/usbdisk**
cfdisk partitions your disk. you will stilll need to format the partition.
use cfdisk this way
cfdisk /dev/*usbdiskdevicename* (this you need to obtain from dmesg as
soon as you insert the usb usually something like sda, sdbso on)
use
mkfs.msdos /dev/*usbpartitionnames* (usually sda1,sda5.. so on. )
one restriction about using msdos filesystem is the maximum partition
size in 30gb sorts.. ( please correct me if I'm wrong here)
-

I suggest that since u would be using the USB drive on linux and windows, u
create the partitions using linux, while formatting the drive in FAT32 using
windows.

Reason, Windows just screws up partition table, better to use the linux
partitioning tools.

[ilugd] Latest additions for Hall of shame: Government of India websites.

2005-11-08 Thread Kapil Sethi
Hi All,

Fortunately I got some spare time, and I decided to explore more govt sites
to add them to the hall of shame and here we are

1. Coal ministry : I have already added
2. Official site for Prime Minister of India: I have already added

The other sites that I have not added to the Hall of shame page but ask
explicitly to download and install Hindi fonts are

1. Cabinet Secretariat, Govt. of India, Hindi section: http://cabsec.nic.in/
2. UPSC, Hindi section: Looks does not believe that there are operating
systems other than windows in this world: http://www.upsc.gov.in/
3. Planning Commission: http://planningcommission.nic.in/hindi/welcome.html

So that leads us to conclusion that the govt agency NIC responsible for
maintaining these websites do not have the skills or knowledge, how to use
free and open source tools. They dont know how to use unicode in webpages to
display hindi or any indian language. On a few site they have used
Macromedia Flash to display the hindi content. I am not sure whether those
sites can be mentioned for hall of shame.

As a measure of success of our efforts in maintaining this hall of shame is
that all the website that NIC maintains and has updated in recent time, the
specific mention of IE or 800x600 resolution is not there. The biggest
example has been the President of India website.

I hope our efforts do produce the results and none of the govt sites promote
proprietory technology.

[ilugd] Join ICONS community: A new Internet informational portal from APNIC

2005-09-22 Thread Kapil Chawla

Dear Members Friends,

APNIC launched a new information portal called 'ICONS'. This site will
provide the Asia Pacific Internet community with a forum to exchange
information and links about a variety of networking topics such as routing,
network security, IXPs, and DNS.

We would appreciate it if you could take a look at ICONS and consider
adding some content to it. For example:

  - add your favourite collection of information to RFCs, Links, Tools or
Mailing lists
  - upload presentations or papers to document section
  - comment on content already on ICONS

We are hoping that ICONS will become an active and growing source of
information for the community. Therefore, APNIC is keen to have the
community
involved in creating and commenting on content from the start of the
project.

To join the ICONS community please go to:

   http://icons.apnic.net/

[ilugd] Internet Governance Awareness Survey

2005-09-13 Thread Kapil Chawla
Internet Governance Awareness Survey
(For Internet Community in India)
Dear Member of the Indian Internet Community,

Internet Governance has been a topic of hot debate in the International arena,
yet not many people are aware of it in India. It has been very often
misunderstood by many as E-Governance.

Internet Society (ISOC ) is conducting an awareness survey to gauge the level
of awareness regarding Internet Governance among the Internet Community of
India. This survey is a part of an awareness campaign on issues relating to
Internet.

The survey is available at :

http://gipi.org.in/InternetGovernanceAwarenessSurvey.php

Your participation in this survey will go a long way in helping us to plan for
our future activities. It will also ensure that you are consulted on Internet
Policy issues in the future.

I get the output as

I wonder why the loop is actually running in a subshell and how can i retain

IMHO, Get hold of a old RH 6.2 or 7 distro and dont install any of the
xwindows stuff.

The system will be able to handle a small network very easily.

If you are going to use squid, take care to allocate a separate partition
for squid cache.

[ilugd] How to unregister a port from portmap

2005-06-01 Thread Kapil Sethi
Hi ,

I downloaded a echo server sourcecode from net and did some changes on the
output functionality. I am not a programmer but am able to understand C code
fairly well.

The server runs in background and it listens on the port number specified from
command line. And displays whatever is received from socket onto the stdout.

In some cases when the server exit is not clean, the port number entry is not
removed from the port mapper. and the server is not able to start on the
previous port.

Can somebody tell me how to remove the port number from port map entry?

Thanks

[ilugd] Fw: [apnic-talk] [Apnic-announce] Invitation: Internet GovernanceQuestionnaire

2005-05-15 Thread Kapil Chawla
Dear colleague,

This is an invitation and an opportunity to provide input directly
into the current discussions on Internet Governance.

The UN's Working Group on Internet Governance is conducting a survey
to ask stakeholders for their thoughts on current Internet Governance
arrangements.

The questionnaire is available on the WGIG website at:

http://www.wgig.org/docs/Questionnaire.09.05.05.pdf

An online discussion forum is also being established. When available,
this can be found via the link on the WGIG home page:

http://www.wgig.org

I would like to encourage you to take a few minutes to respond to this
survey. As a stakeholder in Internet governance, and in IP address
management in particular, your input is important and will be valued
by the WGIG.

In order to better understand the positions of APNIC members and
stakeholders, I would be very interested to receive a copy of any
inputs that you send to the WGIG, if you are prepared to share them.
This is entirely optional of course.

Thanks and best regards,

Paul Wilson

The interesting part is, MS is implicitly acknowledging that there are
reasons apart from cost savings for running Linux -- whether it be
application breadth, stability or security. After all, if you own
Virtual Server by definition you have paid for a license for Windows,
so why would you need to run Linux? Yup, not cost but other reasons.

I also want to add the following:
Leave your individual reservations about certain

For the LUG to survive in the long run (and if you

Can some one help me out, because I am unable to remove them by usual

[ilugd] UNDP-APDIP Internet Governance Survey Now Open

2005-02-06 Thread Kapil Chawla

UNDP-APDIP announcing major regional survey on Internet governance
priorities: all stakeholder groups encouraged to participate, online
questionnaire available in twelve languages: take a few minutes to register
your views and support the survey outreach

Background and objectives

UNDP-APDIP, in cooperation with UNESCAP and APNIC, is conducting a major
survey on Internet policy issues in the entire Asia-Pacific region. The
survey intends to reach out to all stakeholder groups, public and private
sector, Internet developers and industry, as well as civil society and
normal Internet users. This will provide a good overview of what the
priorities in Internet policy are in your own countries, and how they vary
for different stakeholders and across countries. The results of the survey
will be conveyed to the UN Working Group on Internet Governance and will
also help us at UNDP-APDIP to focus our own research and capacity building
activities in Internet governance on priority topics.

How to participate

The survey can be completed online in a few minutes and will be open for
three weeks until February 26. Maximum outreach is key to the success of
this effort, so we have made the online questionnaire available in twelve
major languages of the region.

You can access the English version at http://survey.igov.apdip.net , which
also contains links to all other languages. Alternatively you can go
directly to one of other language versions at the links below.

How to make this survey a success

In order to get the word out and reach all stakeholder groups in all
countries, we very much depend on local partners. May we ask for your help
in this regard? It would be immensely valuable, if you could make your
colleagues/members aware of this survey and encourage them to participate.
So please do forward this announcement widely.

Please note
The survey is for residents of the Asia-Pacific region only. Non-English
language versions of the questionnaire require language support for the
respective character sets to be installed on your computer system.

2005-01-07 Thread Kapil
Hi Vidyanand,
YOu may need to go to http://www.tldp.org
On this site in the HOWTOS section you will be able to find a document
which will provide you with all the spoon feeding you may require. You
only have to do the hardwork of searching the appropriate HOWTO and
reading it.

Apart from that, if you google on How to install DB2 on Linux, you
will get a number of links which point on the same.

Last but not the least, open the docs folder on your installation CD,
and read whats in there. IBM DB2 CD ships with comprihensive
documentation for installation and fine tuning.

Hope you have a mouthful of info.
Let me list know of what you achieved after you follow the above 3 steps.

Go down you sendmail.cf, until you find a line with

Just remove the Addr=127.0.0.1 part so that the line looks as
Port=smtp,Name=MTA
Save the file and restart the server.
Additionaly you will require to put in the following line in your access
file (typically in /etc/mail on RH systems) where xx.xx would be your

xx.xx.xx.0RELAY
Then do a makemap hash access access
Restart your sendmail

I think the problem is because
1. procmail is piping the mail to your getlatest-500.sh script
2. your script is not accepting the mail contents from the pipe.
If you see the examples in man procmailex you will see whenever a
process is launched using procmail, it is processing the mail contents,
and then doing other job.

So because procmail is not able to deliver the mail, it goes into a
defucnt mode and the mailq shows one mail pending

Just a thought, comments welcome

Try monitoring the disk I/O. AFAIK load average shoots up, when multiple

[ilugd] Problems on Indian Railways Website

2004-12-13 Thread Kapil Sethi
I have two problems to state
1. I use Linux to browse the net and my browser is Firefox. This browser
is certified to be 100% complaint to the W3C standards. Since Netscape
is almost dead, Firefox is 2nd most popular and open source browser on
the internet.

Your site looks misaligned and a misfit on this popular browser.
2. You are using proprietory Microsoft technology to show hindi content
on the website. So people who want to see hindi text have to use
Microsoft Windows.
As a Government of India Ministry, the site should not be promoting or
favoring any particular brand, unless there are strong reasons for the
same like non-availability of alternatives.

For your information - The Press Trust of India Website
(http://www.ptinews.com/bhasha/ptisite.nsf) uses technology which
enables me to view hindi sites on Linux and other Unixes in addition to
Windows.

I expect that your organization would take a look at my request, and do
the needful

Thanking you

And I doubt that Management of Public Sector banks is going to lend an

[ilugd] Site looking pathetic under linux

2004-12-03 Thread Kapil Sethi
Hi,
I was just going through your website. It appears that your organization

About SPIC
The Society for Promotion of IT in Chandigarh (SPIC) has been set up
under the aegis of the Department of Information Technology, Chandigarh
Administration for implementing the various plans of the Administration
to promote the IT industry in Chandigarh. The Chairperson of the Society
is the Adviser to the Administrator. The major objectives of this society

However I feel that the organization is too busy and not keen on
promoting or even utilizing open source technologies and software.

I viewed the site using Firefox and Mozilla browsers on Linux as well as
MS-Windows, and found that your website looks horrible in these free to
use browsers, due to obvious programming incompetency, or mere laziness
to test the site against non-proprietary browsers.

Promotion and use of Open Source technologies is in the interest of our
country. Even the President of India, in his various speeches and
lectures has called for using open source software.

The country would appreciate if Public identities like your organization
takes note of our requests and to the least makes your website look good
in non-proprietory open source browsers.

Hi,
I was just going through your website.
I was shocked to note that the your website can be best viewed by

Being a free citizen of free India, I ask why the esteemed organization
which ropes in the best brains in the country, force commercial software
down my throat. Why cant I see the site on Linux, the free and open

I feel that the organization is too busy and not keen on promoting or

[ilugd] Exception handling in shell script

Hi All,
Here is a small piece of code. I wish to process the first file in a

TOPROCESS=`ls -1 sops* | sort | head -n 1`
Now the problem is that if the is no sops* file in the directory the
shell script exits with the error.

How to handle this so that, TOPROCESS variable just remains empty if
sops* does not exist. I want to let the script exit gracefully by
checking the contents of TOPROCESS after the above is handled.

1-2 yrs
1.5 - 2.5 lakhs
3-5 yrs
3 - 5 lakhs

Is there any salary survey for Indian IT guys.. ?

I guess, what I am looking forward to, is to understand how Linux
handles SMP, and that too not only on Intel but SPARC processers as well.

The Howtos on tldp are not too recent or informative about the actual
theory of operations.

For example Sun servers come in configuration of 64 and above processors
with 100s of Gigs of RAM.
If Linux kernel has been ported or ever be ported to such machines, what
needs to be in the kernel for SMP and memory management.

Intel workaround would support max 64GB of RAM for kernel, but Intel x86
is not the only processors Linux runs on. So that limits to 16 intel
processors max.
16 * 4GB = 64GB. What happens if number of CPUs has to be increased
above 16 limit (can be SPARC or PPC)??

[ilugd] Memory addressing on a 8GB RAM, Two processor system

2004-10-13 Thread Kapil Sethi
Hi All,
My question may not be exactly related to linux.
We know that a 32 bit processor can access a max of 4GB of RAM, but two
processor systems with 8GB Ram are quite common these days.
My questions are :
1. Are both processors able to access a full 8GB of RAM?
1.1 if yes then how. ?
1.2 if not, then is each of the 4GB of RAM on these systems local to
respective processor ?
1.2.1 In such a case how would a process running on processor A access
memory or communicate with another process running on processor B.

2. How is linux kernel able to handle 8GB or more of RAM, when the
maximum address the Compiler / CPU can generate is 4GB -1.

Any pointers in this regards ?

Instead of commercial software like partion magic you
can try humble fdisk on linux. You may need to do a
little hit trial though.

As I would have done -
1. Boot using RH disk in rescue mode.
2. fdisk /dev/hda
3. remove all entries except the hda1
4. create extended partition. full 30 GB extending to
last cylinder
5. create logical partion of 20GB.
6. change partition type to NTFS/HPFS
7. save Reboot to Windows. Verify wether it works.
8. If D: not recoginized try + - 1GB / cylinders size
of partition of the logical partition D:

If the D: was FAT then I sincerly would suggest to go
to Nehru Place for some commercial recovery as Windows
below uses different type of partion entries, more
info on this in 'man fdisk'

Re: [ilugd] Re: Shell Script:Help Required.

2004-09-02 Thread Kapil Sethi
How about a simple idea

My understanding - you are writing script a.sh and
you want to pass all the outputs to a custom file
a.log

You can do a
$ nohup a.sh

This will create a nohup.out file in the Home
directory, which you can afterwards rename to a.log

Rest of the automation, I hope you can do.

A 32 bit processor system can address upto 4GB of memory. On a system with
less than 4GB of memory can utilize Virtual memory techniques by using space
on Harddisk as virtual memory device.

My question is -
(1) If a system has 4GB of physical RAM for a single 32 bit processor, will
the OS be able to use virtual memory, considering all of the addressable
virtual space is physically available. ?

(2) What is the maximum amount of virtual memory which Linux (2.4 or 2.6)
use / provide ?
