Why yes George I have dealt with the USF lately but that was because Iowa

You should also know that in the DE office in Des Moines they have on the wall

both of us on it :) (I love the DE if they are reading this email!)

Jon,
You could be a national hero! You buy up all of the caskets and cemetery
plots in Iraq and Afghanistan and nobody would die! Wow! I can see the
headlines now.
Our old neighbor, Carl Hood used to say: "If I bought a cemetery, nobody
would die." He had your kind of luck also. He did own a half-section of land
when he died so his luck did change.
Good Luck,
George
PS I think you must have missed one thing on your list. Surely you had some
kind of dealings with the USF auditors during the day.

[info-tech] Rain delay at a volleyball game.

2010-09-01 Thread JON HUESER
I have been asked for a explanation of the rain delay.
A storm blew in and opened the vent on the roof of the gym - then the water
started pouring in. Our local electrician went up to the roof with me but with
my luck this year we decided that he would go out on the roof (during the
storm) and shut the vent. Wasn't that nice of him!
25 minutes later the water slowed to a small drip and we continued the game
(still drying in between points)!

We always seem to have issues with them, and are looking for what people are
using on their Windows machines. We use a couple of Faronics products, so I am
looking into their Insight product, but looking for suggestions of other

Also, if you have used a product, and it hasn't performed, that would help

[info-tech] USAC Audit continues

2010-08-05 Thread JON HUESER
Nearly two years after the audit, I finally get a "Notification of Commitment
Adjustment Letter". As many of you know (you don't want to get USF audited-
besides that we were audited), the great government spent over $25,000 to audit
a $4800 bill. The argument with them this spring was on when did we talk to
our board and public about the CIPA requirements (like we are suppose to do).
I found in our board meeting agenda's in 2001 I discussed with the board
"Internet Filtering/Safety" on July 16, 2001. Our board minutes stated that I
gave a presentation on "filtering software and usage of that software".
According to the USAC CIPA rules I must be able to prove when we posted the
agenda to make sure our public has time to come and committment on the CIPA
rules and use of filtering. I stated the Iowa requires the agenda to be posted
at least 24 hours before the meeting.
The findings state that I need to be able to prove that the agenda was posted
at least 24 hours before the meeting. I stated to the guy today that Iowa
doesn't require I keep track of what time and day I post the agenda. He said
according to the rules we need to know this (bullsh*t cough)! I could look in
the local paper but it might not specifically state Internet filtering/CIPA.
So they say we must repay 1920 +300 of the $4800 (don't ask how they got the
1920 as that is just as complicated).
Do I fight this (which I have 60 days to appeal) or not? I am guessing
whatever I do they will not accept and we are to the point of probably needing
a lawyer to help (which would cost more than the $1920 paid out). My gut
feeling is to pay the damn bill, keep my mouth shut and hope I don't get
audited again BECAUSE it will be the same issue if I get audited again
I can't prove when we posted it to the public!
Hope you NEVER get audited!
I do Love the FCC since I know they are reading this email probably as I type
it :)
I would love to hear your opinions on it but be careful - big brother is
watching!

2010-05-06 Thread JON HUESER
After spending most of the afternoon looking for our board minute books I found
in July 16, 2001 I gave a presentation on "Internet Filtering Software/Safety".
Luckily it was stated that way in the board minutes and on the board agenda it
also stated that I was giving a presentation on it. Hopefully that will
satisfy the USAC. The did clarify and say it only needs to be done once and
should have been done by 2002 at the latest. Amazing the crap I have had to
get. Just hope you don't get audited or are retired by that time.
BTW: I love the federal government and the USF and FCC They have been
quite helpful and I am thankful for a caring, loving government :)

[info-tech] Compliance for USF

2010-05-06 Thread JON HUESER
Dale from USAC has told me it doesn't need to be done yearly but you must keep
a record of it for every year to prove it was done. I said it would probably
be easier to just have on record every year talking about CIPA and filtering
and that is what we are doing. Now if you haven't specifically stated in your
publication for board meeting or board meeting specifically then they can
recover cost for the audited item back to your 2002. You maybe required to
reimburse USAC for those items. Thinking about $35,000 to $45,000 that we have
received on this item (less the 20% we paid on it). They do not have to seek
recovery but it might be a fight and we may have to negotiate a lower payback!
We have in our published agenda "Internet Safety - CIPA" and then in the board
minutes we have stated that I presented on Internet safety including the
Lightspeed Internet Compliance statement. That can be downloaded from their
website. Don't know if it is enough but hope so.
This day keeps getting better. Now I am looking for board minutes from June
2001!

[info-tech] Erate compliance 2

2010-05-06 Thread JON HUESER
Just thought I would keep you up to date.
They are looking at my audit still from 2006. Starting in the 2002 funding
year, you were suppose to have a public notice and public hearing to address
technology protection measures. Which I didn't know about or didn't follow.
If you do not, the USAC may be able to recover dispursements from the 2002 year
to whatever year you did the technology protection measure public hearing.
Once I got the findings from USAC, (fall of 2009) at the next board meeting I
did the public hearing.
They want to know what day the public notice was put out (which we don't have
that date, just according to law it must be 24 hours prior to meeting) and then
minutes from the meeting.
I did ask if I was suppose to do this every year and the guy didn't think so,
but you need to keep the record of when you did it so if they ask, you have
that.
So long story short - if you have not had a public meeting and it needs to
specifically state in the minutes that you talked about internet safety and
CIPA compliance, then you better do it at the next board meeting. If you are
not sure, you better do it to have on hand for your audit. I now have it
scheduled every december we talk about internet safety and CIPA compliance
with our lightspeed system.
I don't think this will ever end.

So add a test, and pay for it out of the $$ we gave you.

Subject: RE: [info-tech] Teacher Websites/Sharepoint?

Been trying to create a site for the high school over the summer with
Sharepoint with the addition of an application called sharepoint learning kit.
This app provides the framework for a cookbook approach to making the site.
Unfortunately it's open source, (with limited support from MS) and it has been
a tough go. I'll be sharing it on the 22nd at the Heartland "get together",
I'll gladly share it on the 24th in Ft. Dodge. This is using Microsoft Office
Sharepoint Server 07, Jeremy's solution is much cheaper (free) which is
referred to as wss 3.0 and as he said, is a service that you can enable from
the server features. I think both provide the ability to run SCORM packages.
(In Theory.)

Well, After many "redos" of building the server from scratch, I'm at the point
of adding data bases for additional pages. Each student will have their own
webpages which will reflect class assignments, documents for class, dropbox.
One of the key components is the ability to run SCORM packages made by
authoring tools. This would allow the student to take online assignments
(multiple choice, matching, short essay, besides other methods) and submit them.

I have a very limited "web" background, so those of you that have messed with
these things before, should have an easier go at it. It's similar to moodle.

Enough, have a good evening.

re: [info-tech] MAP test ?

2009-05-21 Thread JON HUESER
We test during sept in the fall, but part of the reason is we also use the data
for some grouping.

Instead of thinking about teachers looking at the map data to see if the
students have grown (which they can do). We have the map data loaded into the
Heart database at the AEA along with all of our ITBS/ITED, DIBELS, etc. It
took some doing to get that stuff in, but now I just send them the MAP data
each year and they upload it. You do have to send the AEA your ITBS demographic
file early but I have an export that does it in our SIS so it is pretty easy.
They then use that file for student information when they do all of the other
data uploading for us.

It has allowed us to keep track of all of the individual data in one setting.
Much easier for the curriculum director, principals and staff to use.

Good morning! Quick MAP test question for those who use this test:

We took our first year of testing this year. In looking at testing
for next year . . . can next year's teachers access this year's data
on their students? I know we load everything based on this year's
schedule/advisors . . . and because this is our first year -- I'm
not sure of how it would look for next year. I know that data will
follow the student -- but if it's difficult (or not possible) to see
last year's data for your new classes -- it would seem necessary to
test asap in the fall.

Hope this makes sense.

RE: [info-tech] Lightspeed

2009-01-29 Thread JON HUESER
For the past two years we never had one problem with the anti-virus portion of
lightspeed. Last summer we did the update to the firewall part of the product
and updated most of the internal to the new agent. Since then we have had
nothing but problems. Craig and I have always been under the assumption this
year that we have something corrupt in the database to not make it work
correct. They have been very good working with us earlier this year with our
issues and we thought we had it fixed until January 5th came around.

To be honest about them, we know the CEO is aware of our issue and I feel he is
probably putting a lot of heat on his people to get us fixed (don't want bad
publicity in the economic time) and we have been dealing with their top people.
They did not know anything about this virus until we got them netmeeting into
our network to see the problem. The problem I have is that we are paying them
to keep this out and to help us stop it and we have been fighting it daily for
a month. That is completely unacceptable. They wouldn't allow somebody like
Principal or Wells Fargo sit that long, they shouldn't do that to us.

Hopefully with the CEO's involvment we will get this solved and continue our
formerly good relationship with Lightspeed.

BTW: Did you guys actually know I am MAC support in our district - or course

RE: [info-tech] Lightspeed

2009-01-29 Thread JON HUESER
We found out the other day that lightspeed is now doing the safe search on
moderate instead of strict safe search so keep that in mind. According to one
of the big wigs at lightspeed (heaven knows we have talked to them almost daily
now for a month), the tech people are asking them to put it back to strict or
allow us the choice.

I will explain our problem. A teacher brought the school laptop back after
break and used it on his home network which was having problems at the time
(Yes we tell them not to but usually the agent is updated). He then put it on
our network and it caused problems. It was knocking down our internet. I
finally found the msddlle.exe running and found out the new version of a virus
came out around Dec 28 and guess who had it, YES we did! We have been fighting
it ever since. I believe that it stops the security agent from running active
threat, because we can run a scan and it finds the virus but it still allows
that virus to reload and other viruses to reload. I am no tech support from
lightspeed (probably craig and I could be by now) but we have told them what we
think it is doing.

Since I haven't been very pleasant with the lightspeed people the past week,
they are now taking a more active look at our problem and hopefully they have
it solved today. The funny thing was, we could look in the unknown programs
file while lightspeed was running and Craig and I are able to point at other
versions of the virus but lightspeed wasn't seeing them and of course you can't
delete anything out of unknown programs thru the security agent. Cross your
fingers and my true readhead temper is showing with the company. Craig and I
have made a few suggestions on how to improve the product, Craigs were nicer
than my suggestions and I hope they use his over mine!

Now you know why I have had to hold back and hope you guys don't get what we
have.

having very good luck with the anti-virus part of it since upgrading to version
7. Hopefully we're taking the hit for everyone else and they'll get all of
their signatures up to date shortly. We're working with them right now on
quite a few virus issues. Maybe Hueser will miss this thread topic or we'll
all be in for a treat...

We also use LightSpeed at Jefferson.

Hey all,
Yesterday I attended an online seminar showing how lightspeeds new plugin for
streaming video works.
It was very cool and efficient.
Who out there is using lightspeed for virus protection and filtering? Can I
get a show of hands?
How about a user group - even a virtual one, that can help with hammering out
policies and such?

Thanks,

[info-tech] msdll.exe

2009-01-09 Thread JON HUESER
I know that virus has been out for a while but something has changed that
allowed it to bypass our antivirus software. Be careful and if you have a
machine that can't get IE to work, check the service for msdll.exe running.

The only good thing is our workstations are locked down with centurion
driveshield so it is mainly office and teachers machines we have to work on.

[info-tech] New virus

2009-01-09 Thread JON HUESER
We just spent 5 days fighting a new virus in our network and craig spent the
evening working with lightspeed to get a signature of it. Lightspeed will up it
in a new update that will come out by 8:00 tonight.

If you have a windows machine and it works fine but you can't get internet to
work, look in the services and see if a msdll.exe is running. If it is, it is
a new virus that came out around January 1st. We also found it it stops
anti-virus programs from running. You have to disable the msdll.exe service
then you can stop it from running in the task manager. Talk to your anti-virus
people to figure out how to remove it if they don't have it as a signature yet.

Just giving everybody a heads up, don't tell me that Macs won't have that
problem, blah, blah, blah!

Just glad we found it after fighting with my network for 5 days at the end of

[info-tech] Looking for some computers and monitors

2008-10-23 Thread JON HUESER
Hope everyone is having a good week.

My brother-in-law is looking for some good older windows machines that schools
want to get rid of. They have to be able to hold Windows XP since that is what
he will lic to put on them. He is also looking for any monitors to go with
these computers.

Basically he is looking for quantities of XP capable computers (with mice and
keyboards) and any monitors. So if you have any quantity to get rid of please
email him direct at [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Mike Reese).

I told him I would pass this on since I know it is difficult to get rid of

Tony,

For the districts that host email through the AEA we have started to archive
all messages through SmarterMail. Also Dan Davis is using the built-in
Journaling feature in exchange. Dan will be presenting at the Info-Tech meeting
how to do this with exchange.

There are a LOT of companies looking to cash in on the email archiving rush
right now. We have had a demo on the Freedom9 appliance that looks really nice,
but it is difficult for me to justify the $5000 price tag when it can be done
simply at the mail server.

I would also recommend that before anyone decides to start archiving email that
they have policies and procedures in place. How long are you going to keep the
email messages (My recommendation is not less than 2 years) who can view the
archived email messages and under what circumstances. Our hosted policy will be
emails will only be released by written request of the districts legal counsel.
Have a "Stop Order" policy where if any legal action comes up the districts
does not destroy ANY data or paper until the legal action has been resolved.
Who will retrieve and filter the requested data, Some email may contain
non-related confidential data that will have to be filtered out of requests.

As per the archiving session we had last year I would recommend that if you
archive your district should have a "Team" including district administrator and
legal counsel.

[info-tech] Question.

2008-04-01 Thread JON HUESER
I am having a tough time trying to find something and thought I would ask you
guys.

We have a regular diploma which requires 50 credits and a diploma from our
alternative school that requires 36 credits. I feel that is to big of a gap
and would like to look at a modified diploma at 44 credits. Problem is that I
can't find anyone who has one that I can look at. I need to know requirments
for that diploma and what steps the student has to take to get into that track.

I know you guys are probably not the right person to talk to but if you have
one in your district can you forward this to the proper person.

USAC Audit is in 6 days. Team flies in to DM on the 7th and hopefully in 5
days they will be done :) What the fed pays for a $4800 USF bill.

[info-tech] USF Audit

2008-03-21 Thread JON HUESER
Just thought I would tell everybody that I am working on preparing
documentation for my USF audit on April 7. Hope you don't get randomly (yeah
right) selected because they don't give you any time and it is a pain in the
butt to get all the compliance stuff in place. I said last year that they
would audit me on this item because I fought with them on it. Random, I don't
think so!

First the audit is for a $4800 data circuit for year 2006.
Second, they are going to fly in 5 people to do the audit which could take up
to 5 days. I don't know about you but flying people in at the last minute
(they informed of the upcoming audit on March 11), is going to cost more than
the $4800.
Third, like I don't have anything else to do, I have now collected at least 35
pages of evidence that they want BEFORE they come out.

They asked me for the nearest airport and I told them Denver, then they need to
rent a car and drive 700 miles to our location :)

At the april meeting I will bring the stuff so you can see what they are
looking for and what a pain in the butt it is.

Now you know why I am at school on my day off!

Re: [info-tech] Document Cameras

2008-03-06 Thread JON HUESER
We still have the cart in our rooms but we have them off to the side. The
carts house vcr/dvd player, speakers, etc. The projectors are then mounted in
the ceiling and we run one cable back to the cart. Seems to work well for what
we are doing.

If cost is a problem, I have bought a lot of ceiling mounts from this person:

http://stores.ebay.com/Mighty-Mounts-and-a-Whole-Lot-More

Fairly cheap, and seem to work pretty well, we just take out the ceiling panel
and I put in a 3/8" panel that we mount to. My biggest cost is the cable to
run back to the computer and running power to that location.

I am not cheap, just thrifty :)

Subject: [info-tech] Accelerated Reader

I received some information regarding Accelerated Reader and the
Enterprise version recently. I noticed it's web based, with access
to ALL quizzes available (no more $3/quiz), along with vocabulary and
math skill building available as well (and to all lower levels).
Currently, our 4-5 building uses it, as well as our 6-8. The 4-5 is
set up using a network based approach, the 6-8 is stand alone on a
few extra ("older") computers set up in language art rooms. This was
all set up before me time, and I am now interested in either
combining the databases, going web based, or other options available
to me I don't know about.

Unless we merge buildings, I was told I cannot combine the
databases. (And it appears as if the tests are specifically "coded"
for each building.) The 6-8 teachers are fearful of a web based
application because they want kids to only use it on the computers in
their room. Both use it as a part of their reading curriculum (from
what I understand). We also purchased SuccessMaker several years ago
to use with our non proficient and special education populations to
build on reading, vocabulary and math skills. This is a network set
up, but needs the OS 9 to boot up--which they are no longer
supporting--in which case we will need to upgrade as we replace
computers with newer ones.

I'm just curious as to what others are using in regard to Accelerated
Reader, and any advantages/disadvantages to any of the options
mentioned above. If the Enterprise has Math, Vocabulary, Reading
software, and is part of the AR already being used . . . It seems
silly to support multiple vendor based programs that do the same
thing in essence (maybe). Esp. is stuff is web based. Also, is
anyone using the Scholastic Read180 software instead? I know their
doing their demo at the end of the month, but again, just looking for
feedback.
Thanks in advance for any info, and stay safe and warm!

re: [info-tech] Venting and question

2008-02-15 Thread JON HUESER
We had people request our machines last year that were old. We then wiped HD
and restored. We gave them away thru a drawing. We gave away around 30 old
machines. Once I figured out how much time Craig spent on it, it wasn't worth
the cost. The PR was good but not the cost. If I do this again it won't be
for a couple of years and just for PR.

We are on a 4 year rotation cycle and I buy off-lease. We don't put old
machines in the rooms unless they have a very good reason and then our answer
is usually no. How can I make this decision, because the committee of 1 (me)
decided. Since I am now also the principal, I don't get many complaints.

So I am getting machines ready for public sale (these machines have been
replaced). Now every teacher (okay not every, but quite a few) is asking why I
don't place them in the classrooms. They all "need" more computers and feel
that they should get these prior to them being sold. I explain that these
machines are old and that we have a replacement policy in place and if I keep
placing older computers in rooms, then I will eventually have to manage some
50,000 machines (yeah that is an exageration, but give me some artistic license
here).

So I am asking all of you, how do you handle this type of request (Other than
"Want in one hand and "spit" in the other")

Do any of you have written policies on computer replacement, public auction,
computer to student ratio.

I am just battling the staff on this and am very frustrated. One staffer has a
close relationship (spouse) to a board member who is now raising a bit of a
stink even though that said board member voted to okay the sale. UGGHHH!

Pulling out the remainder of my hair, please send any info.

RE: [info-tech] Text BooK Replacement

2008-02-11 Thread JON HUESER
Has anyone looked at how the kids take care of the textbooks they have? Of
course I am sure they would take care of a school owned laptop much better.

BTW: if they do damage it, how many parents can afford to repair or replace
the laptop (like we do with books), also if a free or reduced kid breaks it do
they have to fix it or do we charge enough for the other students to makeup
that cost.

I have enough issues with my teachers and laptops let alone the kids, but if
you have a district where the kids take excellent care of their books and other
school materials, please go for it.

Some of the hoops,
Do the teachers want this? It's like buying a dress for your wife and she's not
with you. We have about 1/3 of our books on the tablets, but most of the
teachers are still using the books. Some of the ebooks use an earlier version
of Acrobat, which causes problems when we standardized with version 8. (These
publishers -vendors- insist that we use a CD in every machine. Some vendors
will push an web-base textbook, but if the student lacks connections at home,
then there's another problem.

Price- it's really not cheaper than books, I don't have the numbers at hand.
Currently software is still off the Silo tax list.
When I shared direction of the 1:1 with the listserv, one of the questions was,
"are you going to buy them a car as well?" Looking back, the car idea would
have been better.
We have 170 students with laptops, plus the staff. Teaching Special Education
full-time, I try to focus on Network issues, we have a tech(paid at the level
of an aide) that deal only with the desktop and repair. Yes, this will be
quite an undertaking.

I'm sure I have more, but Monday morning beckons,

Subject: [info-tech] Text Boox Replacement

Hello all,

It has been suggested to me in a meeting that we replace our paper text books
at the High School with notebook computers. It sounds insane to me to give 400
high school kids a notebook computer not to mention the design and
implementation of such a thing with only 1 tech person. The district is also
going through bad financial times and probably would not hire any more full
time help to support this.

Is any other district out there doing this? If so what is your experiences with
this?

Thanks,

Tony Richardson,

Technology Coordinator

LANCE,

I DON'T HAVE A POLYCOM BUT I WOULD GIVE YOU AN EXCELLENT DEAL ON A FALCON UNIT,
I MIGHT EVEN PAY YOU TO TAKE IT OFF MY HANDS. (I typed in caps so Lance could
hear me since he went to the Van Halen concert last night)

re: [info-tech] more standardization

2008-01-31 Thread JON HUESER
Jeremy must have been on the same wavelength as me. He took all of my answers.

We have decided to go with the NEC VT695, mostly because I know a few districts
(like FD) have had very good luck with them. Since our great January break-in
in our HS we are installing 5 of these units.

The one thing I really like about the NEC is the ability to remove the filters
without having to take the projector apart or take out the bulbs. They just
slide in and are easy to take out and clean.

Thanks!

We are trying to standardize on a projector to put in classrooms.
· I have gotten opinions from some teachers around our district, but
for the most part, they aren't picky, they just want the bulbs to last forever.
· It seems to me that 2 video inputs is a very nice feature, for
switching between computer and doc. cam or other source.
· A VGA video input is nice as well as Svideo (although I've never seen
it used) for DVD/VCR or video cameras
· What other features do you folks look at when purchasing projectors?
For the most part, they won't be mounted. Is there a specific brand that bulbs
are more reasonable on?
· Is anyone using wireless connections to projectors successfully? We
have a few, but the wireless network (internet) connection is given up when
connecting to the wireless proj. Teachers don't like that.
· As always, price is a factor, but it seems that most of these
manufacturers are making money on the bulbs, warranties and not the projector
itself.

re: [info-tech] JMC Health module

2008-01-30 Thread JON HUESER
I think Lance spent to long in the concert sitting by the long haired Grateful
Dead people who were NOT smoking a cigarette!

Since I have climbed the school ladder and am now a Principal I must tell you
that not only do I install scoreboards, but I got up at 4:30 in the morning
last week for 2 days to push snow at the HS. Five hours later I was done! It
was only after that did I realize I could use the schools pickup and blade :)

Sad thing since our SOB (Superintendent of Busses) was gone and our janitor
would have charged us overtime, it was down to the old shop teacher to save the
school day!

Gotta love small schools :)

Our school nurse in the elementary is wondering how many schools in our area
are using the JMC health module and how many are using the Student Health
Management program. She would like to know how extensively you are using the
programs.

So far I have heard from:
Eagle Grove
Jefferson-Scranton
Sioux City
Esterville Lincoln Central

I have contacted the company to see if their is a regional sales or
representative that we could speak with at a meeting. Also if there are others
interested please get back to me or reply back to this list.

If this whole group does go through with this we can get the initial cost for
setup down to $375 plus the $5/student which I like a whole bunch more.
