[info-tech] Handheld Hacking
Quick Survey: As we become more mobile in our school invironment we become somewhat more vulnerable to hacking. I would like to know how others are handling security with iPod Touches, iPhones, Droids and other easily concealed handheld devices. The threat of a student taking control of the network is very real what with the sale of actual intended hacking devices such as the Silica Handheld and other apps such as Pimi intended to collect network data that can be analyzed for passwords later. How is everyone planning on handling this? Thanks, Tony Richardson, Network Administrator / Director of Technology Humboldt Community School District trichard...@humboldt.k12.ia.us

Each elementary building also has one of the syncing cases to use to sync apps to their iPod Touches. I also have purchased iTunes gift cards for each grade level so they can purchase apps. With the home sharing feature in iTunes they can purchase apps and share them with one another across grade levels. (I also receive the receipt each time they purchase something -- a must) Basically, each grade level is responsible for managing their classroom set of iPod Touches. Currently we have around 70 Touches with another 20 + some iPads on the way. Below are the apps I have purchased/downloaded to use for demos with staff. Some of my favorites as well as staff favorites are the ABA apps, Alien Math, Learn Sight Words (dolche word list practice-- it's awesome), Spelldown, iWriteWords, US States. Just out of coolness the Star Walk one is neat for the iPad; my daughter made me download it after watching the commercial several times. :-) I liked the iScore Baseball app for keeping softball stats this summer -- coolness for me. --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by Declude Virus on the server aea8.k12.ia.us] - Archived messages from this list can be found at: http://www.mail-archive.com/info-tech@aea8.k12.ia.us/ -

Hello All, We have about 60 Smartboards in our district now and along with that comes a ton of new lessons produced by Smart Notebook software and by other means. Not interested in trying to do this with Google or l...@edu due to the online storage space limitation. Is MS Sharepoint the answer or are their other software packages that would be simpler for all concerned? From the looks of it Sharepoint could be a bear to setup and maintain. RE: [info-tech] Roll your own wireless
I have had site surveys done from Xirrus, Aruba and Ruckus so I have a pretty good handle on where the APs go for 1:1 coverage. They all pegged out pretty much the same locations. Even Xirrus was a good representation of the same locations just took less devices. They were more expensive than Xirrus, but our Board wanted the local vendor involved. They are guaranteeing the coverage and functionality of the system, and when it doesn't work, we just make a phone call. It is their problem. If you wanted to look at something to do yourself, one thing you may want to have done is the site survey, to at least tell you what you need and where to locate your APs. From that point on, you can do the install, purchase the equipment spec'd and save some money in those regards. There are too many variables with wireless, and I know from our site surveys here that I was amazed at the information that it showed. From there, we could have done everything ourselves. RE: [info-tech] Promethean Boards
First off I purchased one of the short throw adjustables which took a full day to get all the hardware mounted to the wall properly. Instructions were not very clear. After that it looked hideous with all that stuff on the wall (several comments were made). You require a pen to control it which didn't set well with teachers they prefer using the human finger for control. All that said then I started having alignment issues. After 3 software patches and upgrades I still had intermittent issues with it and still do. Tried a new controller with no success. Had issues with the software on the PC crashing the PC tried more than one PC. The software was primitive and was not as capable as the Smart software (may be better now). When it did decide to work no matter what adjustment I made in the software it was never very responsive to the pen. It now lives out its days as a projector screen in our admin board room. I assured the super he would not have it in his new boardroom. [info-tech] BonJour
FYI, I have had a number of issues with the free Apple program called Bonjour. Bonjour is optionally included with iTunes and other Apple products. In some configurations of Windows 7 it has been causing network interruption by adding 0.0.0.0 as the default gateway. Additionally it will cause 2012 srv errors on your Windows servers. It cannot cause stoppage of the servers but if you are scratching your head trying to figure out where these are coming from you now have the source. This is most irritating because you will spend time updating drivers, etc. and make no headway with it. Some copiers and printers now have this included with them. I recommend you shut this off! Setup the Windows firewall on your servers and block UDP port 5353 and do not let the mDNSResponder service run on Windows 7 machines.

Before we get into this, understand this is an honest no holds barred review. I will use some rough and possibly insulting language, but if you read it with an open mind, I think there is some valuable information, even if it is presented rather vividly. I will likely be submitting this same review word for word to Amazon and some other sites. A few years back, there was a kid who was about 14 who had an IQ of about 40, but he could listen to a piece of music once and be able to play it on a piano note for note. This ability really made him kind of cool, but at the end of the day, you just can't escape that he's still retarded. That's the Ipad in a nutshell. Despite that, I am giving this a solid buy recommendation for schools. If that makes no sense, read on, and it will. If I try to compare this to windows 7, and I will, it's kinda worthless. The HP Slate is coming out in a couple months, and it will do everything that an IPad does, and everything that a windows 7 laptop does, and costs less, or about the same actually. If you are a computer geek, like me, then the slate is a much better product. But we use the Kindle here a lot. Mainly the kindle is used is remedial reading and special-ed because the kindle will read aloud to a student, showing them the word being pronounced. Like most programs of this nature, it's got it's problems, most notably lousy inflection and pacing. But it's no worse than anything out there, and allows virtually any book to be used without additional processing. The Ipad has a Kindle app, and though I haven't fully tested it, I have no reason to think it functions any different. Now don't get me wrong, I like the kindle, for me. But I'm not buying for me. Sure, the battery life rocks. Two weeks of a single charge, that is just awesome, the ability to buy through the cellular network without buying another account? Priceless. But the weak point on a kindle has always been it's administration. Basically, if it's on there, the kid has access to it. That includes google searches for porn. On the Ipad, if I don't want a kid to surf the internet, they don't. If I don't want them to load apps, they don't. You tube? Email? Whatever, they don't, or should I say they can't. As you all know, keeping kids out of where they do not belong is always a losing battle, special-ed is even more of a challenge than the other students. That's the cool part as far as actually useful stuff goes. Sure, there are a lot of educational apps, great, great. The predictive text feature is awful from what I've seen of it, I'm working on installing an app that is supposed to be much better. But really, that's the business end of the review. Now there's the fun stuff, or thing I should say. Google Maps is included with the Ipad, and for a damn good reason. It takes total advantage of the multitouch interface. This is beyond ubercool. This one goes straight to Geek Nirvana. I fell in lust with Google Maps, and once I showed it to my girlfriend and her daughter, they proceeded to fight over it for an hour. If you have not tried this, there is just no explaining how awesome this feature is. If I could plug in GPS, it would probably throw me into a transcendental state where I spent he next 20 years in a darkened room playing with the user interface and creating the Church of Jobs. Or at least until the battery died. Ok, so here's the summary. This is a niche market thing. It's great for schools and especially special-ed. But if you are looking for a productive device, wait for the HP Slate. --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by Declude Virus on the server aea8.k12.ia.us] - Archived messages from this list can be found at: http://www.mail-archive.com/info-tech@aea8.k12.ia.us/ - --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by Declude Virus on the server aea8.k12.ia.us] - Archived messages from this list can be found at: http://www.mail-archive.com/info-tech@aea8.k12.ia.us/ -

The cabling will be installed by a contractor however switching and rack hardware will be my end of it. We currently are using Foundry/Brocade switching with POE but not all ports would need POE. Anyone out there who has been through something similar may have some good ideas on what they would put into a new installation. All cable will be CAT 6. I'll cast out for ideas. Thanks, Tony Richardson Technology Coordinator Humboldt Community School District trichard...@humboldt.k12.ia.us Phone: (515)332-9706

Everyone- I have a few questions I would like to pose to the group for input. 1 - At what grade do you start giving students Internet access? Our elementaries would like to not have to log in to computers as special internet accounts, they just want the Internet to work for them. Our current practice would require someone to log the computer in with an account that would have Internet access. I assume that whatever your situation is, you expect the teacher to still supervise their use. 2 - At what grade do you start giving kids their own personal login, with a home directory and internet access. We are doing home directories at 5th grade, and Internet access at 7th grade. 3 - Facebook. We have 3 interested groups ready and wanting to create a Facebook group or a Facebook Page for their specific group. We have talked about privacy, and what kids post about themselves there and how we as District employees are mandatory reporters. From my limited playing of Facebook, I cannot limit access to specific facebook site, it is either give them (staff only, not students) access to Facebook or not. All or none. Their thinking in wanting to create a Facebook page is because that is what the kids are doing, when they aren't at school. My concern is the privacy and lost work time with people maintaining their personal Facebook, Mafia War or Farm Town creation. Give me your thought, the discussions you have had, and we can kind of go from there. Thanks for your time and help. RE: [info-tech] iPad pro/con
Scott - Makes since I agree with you but how do you ensure that students do not bring in undesirable things like porn on their tablets? What does this do to CIPA compliancy? Since students today are growing up in a media rich environment perhaps it is time to look at how restrictive we are and if it is really important to nail systems down tight to protect kids from experiencing some aspects of life @ school. When they walk out the school doors they are unprotected. I do think in concept the iPad is a potential Tool that could be used in a 1-to-1. Would it replace a 1-to-1 Laptop project? If you are going to be having students doing things like video editing I don't see it. But thinking Outside the box in concept I see that it could be a lower cost alternative to a laptop project. Used in conjunction to Moodle, or similar web based solution the Pad could be used to work in the class electronically. The pad could be used in a Moodle course to view/review content, take quiz/tests, and participate in Chat/Forums. This would become more of a pen/paper replacement than a Computer for the class. With electronic rights to Textbooks the students would only have to take home 1 device weighing less than 2 pounds instead of a backpack full of textbooks. But it does not have., Is it that big of a deal, Just don't think of it as a Computer or Laptop, but a whole new class of device. As a Palm Owner since the original units were released I saw it as a great technology. A device to supplement the computer, allowing me to take the computer data I use the most with me on a small handheld. It was never designed to Replace the computer, and I think that was the secret to its success. Although the Palm is on the verge of extinction I still see the concept as a good one. The Pad type of device I see as a similar technology. Not a computer replacement, but a supplement. With technology moving to The Cloud I guess I don't see a big deal with the lack of USB/SD/Firewire or other jacks, plugs, or holes in the device. I would think with no moving parts, maintenance should be minimal compared to a laptop. The cost also would/could allow you to purchase 2-3 Pads to one Laptop. Of course the bad news is that a district would probably still have to maintain traditional computers for higher end processing such as Video/Photo editing, CAD, and such. I guess what I am saying is don't look at this as a traditional computer, but as a new different kind of tool, then think about the problems it could solve. From: Timothy A. I feel the same way about netbooks. They have a place, and are useful for certain things, but if I'm going to base a full-time take-home 1:1 program around a device, it would be a real fully-functional laptop. I can see some educational uses of the iPad (or a netbook, or an iPod touch, or...), but I'm thinking of certain specific applications, not as general purpose machines. My feeling is that its main benefit is to push technology in a certain direction that might really develop into something. I mean, remember the Apple Newton? It didn't amount to much on its own, but it sure pushed technology in a direction that's become very important today. I'm looking for these 'slate' devices to morph quickly into the next generation of handheld computing devices. --- Timothy A. Limbert Technology Coordinator Newell-Fonda CSD winmail.dat

And I'm also with you about the fanboy effect. But there are fanboys on all sides. I've been reading reviews of this thing on respectable tech websites that are basically, It won't do blank, so it's a complete POS. And they literally used the term POS. Please. It's designed to do certain things well at the expense of other things. If it doesn't do what you need, then by all means don't buy it. The App Store and approved apps business is a double-edged sword. It is limiting, but assures to some extent that things work seamlessly. I have an iPod Touch and a BlackBerry Storm, both very similar in terms of hardware (actually, I think the BB is better in terms of hardware, but that's for another discussion). I download a LOT of apps on both of them. The Touch always works totally flawlessly. Apps never crash, things switch quickly and smoothly, videos and music play flawlessly, etc. Not the case on the BB. Constantly finding apps that don't work properly, it crashes frequently (requiring me to pull the battery out to reset it), and when using it as an internet tether, it's constantly disconnecting for no reason. Also, the user interface is clumsy, slow and jerky compared to the Touch. Videos and music don't play as well. Etc. HOWEVER, I don't have to go through the BB App World to install stuff. So, it's a matter of what's important to you: freedom to put whatever damn app you want on the thing, or the assurance that the ones you do won't screw up (too badly). There are legitimate complaints about the closed architecture of the Touch/iPhone, but there is a reason for it, too. A smooth, seamless experience is something that Apple is going for, and that Apple users appreciate. Your mileage may vary. I don't give a crap what anybody chooses to buy and use. Getting into a flame war over platforms is like watching teenagers going Ford RULEZ - Chevy SUXXX!111one~!!. Waste of time. Believe me, I see a bit of the fanboy thing when I go to an Apple seminar and open up my HP/Win7 laptop. Like I have to apologize for not needing more than what a $600 laptop can do for me. But I also resent it when people imply that Apple users are so dumb they'll happily pay too much money for crap that doesn't work. There are people like that in all camps. It's disturbing. Last april, I met a guy who had bought an Iphone because he wanted to run an app that allowed him to zero in a sniper rifle more quickly. RE: [info-tech] skype (or other suggestion)
We had a little girl in the Middle School with cancer and purchased some Linksys cameras and put them in the classrooms. Opened up in a limited fashion the firewall to the website on the cameras. From her hospital bed she could Pan and Zoom in on the instructional area and some parts of the classrooms and could hear the teacher well. Worked really great for a couple of years until she got better and now attends class. Cost about $1000.00 for 4 cameras. -Original Message- From: info-tech-ow...@aea8.k12.ia.us [mailto:info-tech-ow...@aea8.k12.ia.us] On Behalf Of Jackie Fonley Sent: Tuesday, January 19, 2010 3:26 PM To: Info Tech Subject: [info-tech] skype (or other suggestion) Greetings to another before the storm again day! The beauty, however, has made it all bearable. Here's the deal: an elementary student was diagnosed with cancer several months ago, will be starting his chemo treatments again shortly. I know enough about Skype to know the general workings . . . but not enough to say this is the way to go or to even know what things may we need to make this a go?
