[info-tech] Student Email Addresses

2010-10-14 Thread Sarah Freking
We are finally moving to school sponsored email addresses for our students, and
I have two
inquiries to make of the group.

1. Do you keep track of student email passwords in a list, or do you let them
create their own
passwords and also change them at will?

2. Did you put anything specific in your AUP concerning student email use? And
if so, what?

Thanks so much for your responses.

1. What is your procedure when a student forgets their logon password?
Who handles this

Building techs or I reset the password for students and staff on an as needed
basis.

2. Do you maintain a list of student passwords, and if so, who do you
share that list with?
We only maintain a list of middle school passwords, because those are assigned.
We share this with
all middle school teachers.

3. How often do you change student passwords?
Never. Although they are encouraged, as high school students, to change their
passwords
occasionally.

I'm interested in what other districts are doing about student email. We've

Re: [info-tech] Same Questions, different year...

2010-02-04 Thread Sarah Freking
Jeremy--

I am dealing with the same type of issues here. Admin is quick to request I
open up the firewall
door to these things, and I've accommodated them (although not Facebook yet)
but I worry and fret
about the ramifications to the students, the staff, and the district. So many
of the requests for
collaborative web sites are driven by individual teachers, and it seems like
there should be a
means of evaluating what we'll allow and what we won't, rather than just
letting any teacher make
any request.

1. We have Internet access at all grade levels in our district, but all access
requires logging in,
with the exception of one teeny-tiny SpEd laptop that I just put out there, but
that's another
story.

2. The students in grades K - 4 have simple class logins that are alike for
each homeroom. There's
a home directory for each of those class groups and some classes use them more
than others.
Starting in 5th grade, students get their own login and their own home folder.

3. I share your concerns about wasted time. I'm always blown away when I do
take the time to look
at email logs and Internet usage logs to see how much paid time is spent in
what are probably
personal pursuits. On the other hand, I think that's an administrative issue to
solve, and I have
begun to err on the side of allowing access to more and more Web 2.0 tools with
the stern
admonition to staff that they are responsible for what their students post. I
was berated once for
scaring the staff, but I stand by what I think is the huge responsibility we
take on as educators
when we allow our students to post anything publically. If nothing else, it
could be embarrassing
to the district, and we need to be constantly vigilant.

My feeling is that we should spend more time formulating policy before we lean
towards fewer access
limitations to the Internet. However, there are more than a few who tend to
think I'm just getting
too old to understand. Come on, I want to say, I've been using Facebook as a
way to stay in
contact with family and friends for a long time! Looks can be deceiving. And by
the way, when was
the last time you blogged? :o)

I'm VERY interested in this discussion. What's everyone else doing?

Everyone-

I have a few questions I would like to pose to the group for input.

1 – At what grade do you start giving students Internet access?
 Our elementaries
would like to not have to log in to computers as “special” internet accounts,
they just want the
Internet to work for them. Our current practice would require someone to log
the computer in with
an account that would have Internet access. I assume that whatever your
situation is, you expect
the teacher to still supervise their use.

2 – At what grade do you start giving kids their own personal
 login, with a home
directory and internet access. We are doing home directories at 5th grade,
and Internet access at
7th grade.

3 – Facebook. We have 3 interested groups ready and wanting to
 create a Facebook
group or a Facebook Page for their specific group. We have talked about
privacy, and what kids
post about themselves there and how we as District employees are mandatory
reporters. From my
limited playing of Facebook, I cannot limit access to specific facebook site,
it is either give
them (staff only, not students) access to Facebook or not. All or none.
Their thinking in
wanting to create a Facebook page is because that is what the kids are doing,
when they aren’t at
school. My concern is the privacy and lost work time with people maintaining
their personal
Facebook, Mafia War or Farm Town creation. Give me your thought, the
discussions you have had,
and we can kind of go from there.

Thanks for your time and help.

Is anyone using this virtual classroom suite and have any advice as to it's
bandwidth requirements?
Admin is ready to implement this for next year, and I'm looking for a clear

Any experience with this?

To all,

When the AV catalog goes on line later this week, look over the surge
suppressors and battery back
up devices and then tell me what you all are wanting to purchase in the future.

There is no need for me to ask for bids for products no one is going to
purchase. Give me a list
and I will add those to the Spring 2010 bid.

You might also have to tell me what vendors are selling those items, just in
case I have to
contact them if they are not already a vendor for the co-op.

Same thing goes for all of our AV Catalog ... if you have standardized on a
product or mfg for
certain items it would be good to know that.

I am moving to recommending something other than APC for UPS units. The APC
units are Standby
(equipment runs on line power and quickly switches to inverter when needed)
UPS. Not that I have
had any real issues with them I like the Idea of On-Line UPS better where
the UPS inverter is
always supplying power to the equipment. They are also a little happier when
connected to a
back-up generator than Standby UPS units. CyberPower Online Double
Conversion would be my
recommendation.

http://www.cyberpowersystems.com/products/ups-systems/ups-selector.html

The software included allows for a single machine to connect via USB, then it
will chain to any
number of servers via software. So now if you have several servers on a
single UPS all the
servers can shut down gracefully in the event of a UPS low battery.

I have a couple installed and have been very happy with them.

Hi! So I am working on the first step in mounting projectors and all
the wiring . . . Do you have a box on the wall to connect
everything to, and then run the cables from there to the
projector. . . or would you recommend (if they even still make
these) the boxes that everything would plug into and then run one
cable from that spot to the projector. (were they called a video
processor or something--View Sonic made if I remember correctly . . .)

I want ports like the picture below . . . but will need another of
the 15 pin connectors --one for the computer and one for a document
camera. What is everyone using/recommending?

Thanks!

I had HUGE problems with period attendance locking up at the beginning of the

to do some code re-writing, and it's worked ever since. Of course, I have a

Thanks again, Tony. Yes, we’re using the District version of the JMC Office
software. I will
check further into the “user error” possibility, but she knows much more about
the client software
than I do, and I’ve watched her carefully. Weird and frustrating. What’s
making her so mad is
that she checks the first-period attendance carefully, so that if any students
are counted absent,
she starts calling right away to make sure they’re not in the ditch somewhere.
 Then, when she
finds out that a student WAS gone and she didn’t know about it, it really
ticks her off. Again, I
have watched teachers submit their absences, then gone down to the office,
seen that the
secretary’s JMC shows that the teacher HAS submitted their attendance, and yet
the kid(s) they
counted absent are NOT shown as absent. G.

Re: [info-tech] Laptops Carts

2009-01-27 Thread Sarah Freking
We've deployed four mobile labs in the past year a half, 2 at the MS and 2 at
the HS. Our wireless
isn't perfect, but we put wireless access points on the labs that might go to
dead spots, and
that's worked out pretty well. Three of my labs are HP labs with HP carts. One
of those is a
MiniNote lab. The other lab is a Dell lab. We like all of them very much.

I, too, felt a little like we were putting the cart before the horse by
purchasing mobile computing
without very good wireless, but we've made it work. It's nice to get technology
into the
classrooms. My concern now is how budget money will stretch to sustain mobile
technology. It's one
thing to purchase equipment once. It's another when you look at upkeep, repair,
replacement, and
expansion.
