My $.02.

I guess my view of a committee is that it should NOT be a group of
people
all trying to come to a consensus on everything. It should be a group
of
people, each with the power to act independently, keeping each other
informed of what they're all doing and trying to stay on the same page,
and
moving in the same direction toward common goals.

If nobody can do anything without everyone's agreement, then it's going
to
go nowhere.

While there may be some disagreement on the practicality and
usefulness of committees, they are required by the State in some areas
for the State visit. While not currently mandated, the technology
committee is very much recommended by the Site Visit Teams as per
instructions from the State DE. I would recommend setting up one that
has an Administrator, Board Member, Faculty Member, and a Community
Member.

I really like the way that Layne described the setup in Sioux City.
That seems like a very good way to go. My only fear is that the once a

RE: [info-tech] technology advisory board

2009-12-16 Thread Frerichs, Chad
Jackie,

Okoboji has a Tech Team and we meet nearly every week on Tuesday unless
something comes up. I lead those meetings and the members are our
superintendent, our media specialist/technology integrationist, our .5
time tech, and our school board president. When we do think about using
new or different technologies, we usually have a test group of teachers.
Those teachers then share their experiences with either just us or the
entire staff.

I do understand the frustration with committees, but I feel they are
important so that everyone has a chance to share their ideas. Once in a
while I am like Kurt, and go off on my own, create something, and then
present that to the team and say how about this. I do absolutely hate
going in circles during a meeting. In fact I recently requested to be
removed from a committee that constantly went in circles. It drove me
nuts! So, by leading the tech team, I do my very best to not go in
circles during our meetings. This doesn't always occur, but mostly it
does. I think that the most successful meetings are those that have a
preshared, editable (we are using Google Docs for this now) agenda that
by meeting time is set. Then there is a task master making sure the
meeting stays on track. Tangent can kill a meeting.

If you've made it this far, I appreciate you listening to my rant.

2009-12-16 Thread Brad Kruse
Your first paragraph hit the nail on the head.

>>> "Sarah Freking"  12/16/2009 8:27 AM >>>
My problem with committees is the frustration of working through the committee
system with all of it's side-tracks and delays and onerous consensus building,
only to have an entity superior to the committee then call the decisions into
question or completely over-rule them. My feeling is you can't have it both
ways. You can have committees do work and accept their decisions and
conclusions. Or, please, please, please skip the committee process entirely and
don't waste those people's time.

On the other hand, I do buy into the philosophy that two heads are better than
one under certain circumstances and that to get people to buy into decisions
you must include them in the decision-making process. You just must carefully
determine what decisions are better made by committees and what decisions are
better made by experts.

2009-12-16 Thread Pearson, Jeremy
We put our Instructional Technology Committee back together again just
for those reasons. With Microsoft money, and more and more stuff that
people wanted as well as talks about building additions and new schools,
we needed to come together as a district for that vision and long-term
plan.

Your tech teacher award intrigues me . . . technology integration is

here is to review our quarterly "tech-teacher" award. This is just
getting off the ground. The group is board members, parents, AEA rep,
principal, teacher, student. We will also use this group for moving
forward with online learning and potential 1:1 project.

Hey, all! Do any of you have technology advisory boards? How do
they work? How often do you meet? I feel I need a "buy in" of staff
who see us moving forward. I have been rolling out some great things
with resistance (and i know that happens) -- but wondering if an
advisory group who also agrees helps the rollout process. My counter
to some have been "would you visit a hospital with outdated
procedures/technology?". But just curious in what others are doing.
Thanks-- and happy holidays to everyone. I hope you enjoy your break!
Jackie

The last time I formed a committee for anything was to redesign the
website. A year and a half later, after meetings every two weeks, I
built a website in a motel room in Houston while killing time while my
girlfriend was at work. I immediately disbanded the committee by
refusing to ever show up again, and have since sworn off of them.

Near as I can figure it, this was the most productive Committee I have
ever been on.

RE: [info-tech] technology advisory board

2009-12-16 Thread Henn, Layne
Jackie,
We really have 2. One is a larger group made up of teachers K-12. They
are more of a study group for differentiated instruction and technology.
There are about 48 teachers in this group and meet 2x a month (once
virually and 1x face-face) to discuss instructional practice,
frustrations and upcoming stuff. These teachers act as trainers in our
buildings for using technology with instruction.
The other group is a instructional technology council. The main focus
here is to review our quarterly "tech-teacher" award. This is just
getting off the ground. The group is board members, parents, AEA rep,
principal, teacher, student. We will also use this group for moving
forward with online learning and potential 1:1 project.

We do something similar as Brad. Most of the time we start a project with
one or two teachers who buy into the project and then when they have it
running we get more of the other teachers involved.
