Perhaps the page has been updated without JAWS realizing it. On my bank's
site this happens when I hit the pay button. Pressing Insert (CapsLock
for laptop layout) + Escape refreshes the JAWS buffer and it can then read
it to me.

Aloha all,
Some time back I mentioned that I was having trouble reading parts of my
online banking service screens. Here's the issue.

The information on the page is html. However, when a person adds
information such as the name of a company that they want to pay, JAWS only
reads the part that is html. I have contacted the bank but in the
meantime, is there perhaps something I should change in my settings that
might make it work better? I am told that when I click on the make
payments screen, all of my payees are shown on the screen, but when I
arrow around, I only hear the items that were originally on the page and
none of the things that were added. I would tell you what my settings are
now, but honestly not sure what to tell. Perhaps this is only something
that the bank has to fix and they are very interested in doing so.

Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated and tried.

Aloha Donald,
I think I have not been clear. When I started the account nearly a
year ago, I entered a list of payees, their addresses and phone
numbers. When the site was updated is when I began having this
problem. The page I'm having trouble with is that page of payees and
below each entry is an edit box for entering the amount I'd like to
pay. It won't read any of those items so I can't find the payee I
want and then am not able to enter the amount. Does that help? I have
tried the insert escape to redraw the page, and no help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] LAPTOP KEYS WITH JAWS

2010-06-26 Thread Deanne Miller
The caps lock key absolutely doubles as the jaws key on a laptop. There is,
though, a key on all of the laptops I have used, as well as my Acer netbook,
that functions as a jaws key. It is the second key in from the left on the
bottom row of keys, just to the right of the control key. Officially, I
think it's called the function key, but don't quote me on that. I have
worked as a computer trainer/technician for about three years now, and I've
found this key on all of the laptops I have used, including my own. I have
fouhnd that it performs very nearly all of the same functions as the caps
lock key on a laptop. It's simply another option, that's all.

This is one of many situations where using the expression JAWS key
may not be helpful. I think it is preferable to call keys by their
standard names. If you are using JAWS in its laptop configuration, the
so called JAWS key is actually the CAPS LOCK key, and I think it would
be more helpful to use that description.

Some laptops have an insert key, often on the top row, second key from

the

right. Also, often there is a jaws key on the bottom row, second from

the

left, just to the right of the control key. If you hold down the jaws

key, the nine keys, JKL, UIO, and 7 8 9, have the number pad

functions.

Holding down the caps lock key and pressing these keys performs other
reading functions. Experiment with your laptop and see what happens.
Also, don't forget about Insert plus 1, keyboard help. You might
experiment with your laptop using keyboard help and learn how it
functions. That's how I learned to use both of mine.

By the way does a blind person need such monitor power? Would a adverage
flat screen monitor do?
Now as far as the ram. I have always said the more the better, but if you
can only get so much then that is what you work with. Never let your
computer leave you penny less.
And now the harddrive, it can be any size desired. Have seen windows7 on
as low as a 250 gig drive do very well and even a 64 gig ssd. So that part
is user choice.

At 09:44 PM 6/25/2010, you wrote:

If I'm not mistaken, the information said that the computer had a 320 GB
hard drive, unless I read it incorrectly.

It also had 2 GB of RAM.

This computer is going to be running Windows 7 64 bit edition, with an
NVDIA

Video card. The least you want to get in that case is at least 4 Gigs of
RAM, and the hard drive should be at least 500 gigs.

If you're paying more than 250 for that computer, I'm afraid you're
getting

ripped off.

Computer with a lot more than that are selling for 350 and 450 dollars
without a monitor, which, if you're blind, should not need one, so the
monitor should be a luxury, and besides, you can pick up a good monitor
for

765 dollars, flat screen and all.

In any case, when shopping for a computer, don't settle for the computer
that seems to be the best price out there, because, like a car, the price
tag might be great, but what's under the hood may not be.

Hi Tim,

Yes, the 765 was a typo, and I meant to say 75 dollars.

I've seen Acers go for around 85, and as low as 75 from places like
Buy.com,

Tiger Direct and places like that.

I know that people's first inclination is to get a monitor when they buy a
computer, but when people like us get monitors that are huge or something
like that, it just boggles my mind, especially since we, as Jaws users,
don't use the monitor in the least.

Granted, I do advise getting a monitor, even if it's a 13 inch for sighted
diagnosis of any problems that we can't fix on our own, in lieu of taking
it

in for repair, but like I said, you can usually get those for practically
nothing these days.

I recently switched from Juice to Golden Ear to download and listen to
podcast because Juice did not install properly. Well that's another story
for another day. Golden Ear seems interesting, and I am learning my way
around the program. What I like about the program is that podcasts appear's
to load very fast. What I have not quite figured out is player controls
while listening to Podcasts. I don't know how to pause a podcast,
rewind/forward a podcast or how to stop a podcast without actually exiting
the application. Any ideas is greatly appreciated.

Hi listers,

Is there anyway to have access to facebook with usability at the same
time?

When I use facebook with internet explorer 8 and with JAWS 10, my netbook
freezes to the point that I need to restart my computer. However I notice
that using firefox makes it a little faster and I seldom encounter the
freezing of my machine. But I still have some problems such as the
difficulty
with writing in edit fields to write a comment or set a status because
more
often than not, the edit box takes too long to appear or does not appear
at

all. I have been using the mobile site to communicate with my friends and
AIM 7.2 to use the chat, but I just wonder if there is any add on that I
can

incorporate with IE or firefox to make my facebooking more enjoyable in
their main site itself.
Thanks in advance

Re: [JAWS-Users] LAPTOP KEYS WITH JAWS

2010-06-26 Thread Ijemmer Ramos
What do you mean? When you press that function key, that is the key to the
right of the left control in combination with other keys, F12 for instance,
does it say the time? Or if you press that key wit F11, does it invoke the
system tray thing? Is that what you mean by that being a JAWS key also?
Because if that's what you mean, I can say that not all laptops behave like
that so it would be quite confusing if you call that JAWS key by definition.
But if I did not understand what you mean, kindly clarify your post here
because it is really confusing to some. Thanks

The caps lock key absolutely doubles as the jaws key on a laptop. There
is, though, a key on all of the laptops I have used, as well as my Acer
netbook, that functions as a jaws key. It is the second key in from the
left on the bottom row of keys, just to the right of the control key.
Officially, I think it's called the function key, but don't quote me on
that. I have worked as a computer trainer/technician for about three
years now, and I've found this key on all of the laptops I have used,
including my own. I have fouhnd that it performs very nearly all of the
same functions as the caps lock key on a laptop. It's simply another
option, that's all.

I don't mean to be mean or anything, but were you looking at the same
computer I was?

Aloha Donald,
I think I have not been clear. When I started the account nearly a year

the site was updated is when I began having this problem. The page I'm
having trouble with is that page of payees and below each entry is an edit
box for entering the amount I'd like to pay. It won't read any of those
items so I can't find the payee I want and then am not able to enter the
amount. Does that help? I have tried the insert escape to redraw the page,
and no help.

Aloha all,
Some time back I mentioned that I was having trouble reading parts of my
online banking service screens. Here's the issue.

The information on the page is html. However, when a person adds
information such as the name of a company that they want to pay, JAWS
only reads the part that is html.

Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated and tried.

worth a try. Another longshot thought. Could the bank have made the payees
name a graphic? They might have done this as a security measure or simply
to make it more snazy. If so, perhaps the graphic could be labeled with
JAWS or Webvisum. Webvisum could also be helpful since you can send the
graphic to their serber and have them perform OCR on it so it could be
identified. If the payee names are graphics, the bank should definitely
update their pages to label those graphics with Alt tags.

Make sure that JAWS is set to announce all graphics so that you will know if
something is there.

Aloha Donald,
I think I have not been clear. When I started the account nearly a year
ago, I entered a list of payees, their addresses and phone numbers. When
the site was updated is when I began having this problem.

At 09:46 PM 6/25/2010, you wrote:
Perhaps the page has been updated without JAWS realizing it. On my bank's
site this happens when I hit the pay button. Pressing Insert (CapsLock
for laptop layout) + Escape refreshes the JAWS buffer and it can then read
it to me.

Aloha all,
Some time back I mentioned that I was having trouble reading parts of my
online banking service screens. Here's the issue.

The information on the page is html. However, when a person adds
information such as the name of a company that they want to pay, JAWS
only reads the part that is html.

Thanks, Betsy

[JAWS-Users] Turning off password

2010-06-26 Thread rich
Hi all
I have XP home and 10.0.
I want to turn off the password when turning on my PC.
I followed directions to change a password and saw the link to turn off
passwords, however, when I now turn on my PC, I am still asked to log in with
the password, but
the new password has changed to the enter key.

Now ,when I go to users' account there is no option to turn off passwords.

Is there a way to turn this off so all I have to do is turn on the power button
and not log in?

Thank you.

Re: [JAWS-Users] LAPTOP KEYS WITH JAWS

2010-06-26 Thread Ishe Chinyoka
I think she refers that using this key behaves like JAWS key in most, but
not all cases. On my laptop, it will do so for instance pressing the
function key and the semicolon is like pressing the CAPSLOCK (acting as JAWS
key) to make a plus (or a PC cursor).

The function key helps to turn the right side of the laptop keyboard into
the numpad, the function that the Capslock working as the JAWS key does so.
However, pressing it with the F12 for time, I never tried that. I think you
will need to first assign this key in your global keymap file for that.

However, I find using the function key for other tasks easier such as
pressing it with the left arrow key to work as a HOME Key, with the right
arrow key to make an END key, with the down arrow to make a PAGE Down etc.

This is one of many situations where using the expression JAWS key

so called JAWS key is actually the CAPS LOCK key, and I think it would

Re: [JAWS-Users] LAPTOP KEYS WITH JAWS

2010-06-26 Thread Brian Lee
Hello,

Pressing the caps lock key with the semicolon key in laptop configuration
gives the PC cursor. Using the FN key with the semicolon gives the JAWS
cursor. Using the FN key with P does a right mouse button click. Using
caps lock key with P gives the JAWS cursor. I don't think on most laptops
the FN key simulates the caps lock key. People should be aware when trying
these key combinations that although the caps lock key with F9 lists frames,
on some laptops the FN key with F9 mutes sound output. Although the FN key
is used on laptops to give a user a number pad set up to work with, it
doesn't really simulate the uses of the caps lock key in the JAWS laptop
configuration.

Take care.

[JAWS-Users] Renaming Main Folder

   HI

Recently bought a new laptop 64 bit, windows seven using jaws 11.

Software had been loaded because it was on the shelf. So now the folder
where all my files, docs etc go is a folder named Store.

Where can I go to rename this please. I did find an option to rename this
computer but that did not work.

I press the start button and tab once and this is where this folder is,
right at the top of the list.

Re: [JAWS-Users] LAPTOP KEYS WITH JAWS

2010-06-26 Thread Deanne Miller
It is my understanding that there is a difference between the Insert key and
the JAWS key. They perform many of the same commands, but at times they
perform different ones. For example, In combination with F12, they will
both announce the time. However, Insert plus 8 activates the keyboard
manager, while JAWS key plus 8 is the same as clicking the left mouse
button. The function key, on the other hand, essentially turns the right
side of the keyboard into the equivalent of the num pad on a full keyboard.
Hence, it performs some of the same commands as the JAWS key, but certainly
not all of them. In my experience, most laptops have this function key on
the bottom row ,second key from the left, and it is worth knowing about it
in case it can make using the laptop keyboard a little easier. I apologize
for any confusion I caused by saying it could double as a JAWS key. Let's
just say that, in addition to the Insert key and the caps lock JAWS key,
there is a function key that can make the right side of a laptop keyboard
function like a numpad.

Again, I'm sorry if I confused anyone. I was really just trying to help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] LAPTOP KEYS WITH JAWS

2010-06-26 Thread Steve
Nope, your problem is your understanding confuses two things. The insert
key is the Jaws key.

Where you are getting confused is keyboard layout. On laptops, which
sometimes don't have an insert key, the laptop layout makes the Caps-Lock
key function as the Jaws key. And, because smaller laptops lack full-sized
keyboards with separte numpads, some of the function key assignments such as
left-mouse click emulation have been re-assigned in the Laptop keyboard
layout of Jaws. One of those is left-click which is normally the
insert-numpad slash combination but is re-assigned under the laptop
configuration.

As a matter of fact, if you had a full-sized keyboard on your laptop, or
hooked up one and used the laptop layout in Jaws, you'd see that you can
perform the same functions with the Caps lock key or with the insert key.
This proves that both keys are the Jaws key.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Computer advice.

2010-06-26 Thread Scorpio Forever
Hi Steve,

While the specs are nice, although those specs are the bare minimum in my
opinion, the fact is, if you're going to run Jaws 11 on a computer running
Windows 7 64 bit edition, there is absolutely no point in using that
computer unless it's got at least 4 gigs of RAM, otherwise the thing will be
slower than molasses.

If she wanted a slow computer, she might as well keep the one she has and
save her money.

A second point I would make is that a 320 gig hard drive will become
obsolete in less than three months, if they aren't already, so why pay all
that money for something that will be obsolete in less than three months.

The minimum one can get just in a laptop alone is 500 gigs, unless one is
getting a net book, in which case, the biggest I've seen is a 250 hard
drive, and these are solid state drives, so, again, why would she pay 250
dollars for a computer that only has 2 gigs of RAM and a 320 gig drive, it
wouldn't make sense.

Heck, if I'm not mistaken, with all the features of Windows 7, the darn OS
will fill that 320 gigger in a matter of days. Smile.

In any case, at the very least, if she isn't planning on upgrading in the
near future, then I would definitely say that using a computer with those
specs and running Jaws 11 64 bit edition would just make using the computer
way too tedious.

Hi Steve,

While the specs are nice, although those specs are the bare minimum in my
opinion, the fact is, if you're going to run Jaws 11 on a computer running
Windows 7 64 bit edition, there is absolutely no point in using that
computer unless it's got at least 4 gigs of RAM, otherwise the thing will
be

slower than molasses.

Smile.

In any case, at the very least, if she isn't planning on upgrading in the
near future, then I would definitely say that using a computer with those
specs and running Jaws 11 64 bit edition would just make using the
computer

way too tedious.

It is my understanding that there is a difference between the Insert key
and the JAWS key. They perform many of the same commands, but at times
they perform different ones. For example, In combination with F12, they
will both announce the time. However, Insert plus 8 activates the keyboard
manager, while JAWS key plus 8 is the same as clicking the left mouse
button. The function key, on the other hand, essentially turns the right
side of the keyboard into the equivalent of the num pad on a full
keyboard. Hence, it performs some of the same commands as the JAWS key,
but certainly not all of them. In my experience, most laptops have this
function key on the bottom row ,second key from the left, and it is worth
knowing about it in case it can make using the laptop keyboard a little
easier. I apologize for any confusion I caused by saying it could double
as a JAWS key. Let's just say that, in addition to the Insert key and the
caps lock JAWS key, there is a function key that can make the right side
of a laptop keyboard function like a numpad.

Again, I'm sorry if I confused anyone. I was really just trying to help.

What do you mean? When you press that function key, that is the key to
the right of the left control in combination with other keys, F12 for
instance, does it say the time? Or if you press that key wit F11, does it
invoke the system tray thing? Is that what you mean by that being a JAWS
key also? Because if that's what you mean, I can say that not all laptops
behave like that so it would be quite confusing if you call that JAWS key
by definition. But if I did not understand what you mean, kindly clarify
your post here because it is really confusing to some.
