Yes, Hope is working again. You can use it in demo mode if you do not buy

The

I'm using outlook Express, but it'd be in a similar (view) menu or
Ribbon.
Look in there. it has to do with Windows encoding. there may be an
Encoding
submenu, which lists all the windows encoding types. the one I have
checked
is Western European iso, and I never have the problem (although I've
heard
of it in the past from people who had. that's the way towards the
solution.

If not in the view menu, then look in others.

there wasn't anything there about a caller ID feature. Oh, if it matters,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Sorry, but I need to rant about v12 of JAWS!

2010-11-08 Thread Becky B.
I experienced this same problem with JAWS 12 and wrote to the tech support

Dear Becky

Thank you for contacting Freedom Scientific technical Support. Try taking
the steps below and see if the issue persist.

1. Activate the run dialog Windows key+r

2. Type in:

iexplore -extoff

And hit enter

When Internet Explore comes up, see if the issue still persist.

Good morning,

I've been a supporter of JAWS since version 2.x. Always have stayed
up-to-date on my SMA. Never have I been totally dismayed with a major
update until version 12.x.

This has got to be the worst release of JAWS I've ever tried.

First graphics it use to read as so, it now recognizes them as buttons.
Quite irritating when you use quick navigation keys to jump to certain
elements of a web page to read it faster.

And it is quite the memory hog! JAWS 12.x crashes so much on my high-end
Windows 7 machine, I've gone back to using 11.x. Think it has something to
do with the Virtual Ribbon or new fangled Config manager, who knows.
Anycase, it is very irritating to be reading a web page, only to have it
go silent for 3 minutes, and then JAWS comes back.

Sorry HJ, but I hate v12 of JAWS and have gone back to using v11.x
perminantly. It's more stable and doesn't crash every 5 minutes.

Wish you allowed us to switch the config manager back to the old one. Do
away with using this new Virtual Ribbon. Give us a choice to switch them
on and off.

If I get booted for expressing my feelings on this list, so be it. Never
done this before, until now.

Feel better getting this off my chest. Thanks for listening.

What would be the optomum version of Skype to use with Jaws 12 and if any
scripts other than what is in Jaws? I was running version 4.x with Jaws 11
and some scripts from Doug Lee I think? However with install of Jaws CTRL
1 and etc which normally moved to contacts list just rambles about no
script to call blah blah blah.

I can get older versions from www.oldversion.com if need be. I'm running
XP Pro SP3. If scripts are needed and you have, please send. Actually I
want to think I don't even have the Jaws default scripts as I overwrote
them with Jaws 11's assuming it'd actually work :).

JAWS review mode shows both my age and how long I have been using JAWS. It

Yes, the focus problem has been around a long time and seems to get better
with some versions and then flares up again with others. If anyone figures
out the cause, please tell FS. In fairness to FS, there are so many

It works fine here. Try deleting your user settings for JAWS. That's how I
fixed it as initially it didn't work as the web page opened but with a blank
virtual cursor. So take I clicked on a news story with BBC News? The web
page opens but with a blank virtual cursor. Deleting my user settings and
problem solved. So try that, rather than uninstalling or complaining to FS.

For a long time now, JAWS will stumble over a single syllable in a line.
Occasionally JAWS will get stuck on a single syllable, and the computer
locks up, and the only way out is to power off the computer.
A few days ago it went into the stuttering mode, but came out of it
again. But then it kept doing it, so I had to reboot, and it took two
more reboots before it got better.
Has anyone seen this, and is there a cause for this that I can address?

Those things are nice and all,
but wouldn't it be great if it would work the way it should in standard
applications?
I would rather have 100 task specific programs on my machine,
than 10 multi-purpose programs.
It has been my experience that programs that do only one thing, tend to do
it better and more consistently than
programs that try to cover a broad range of tasks.
And this is just the nature of the beast.
The thing that people need to realize is,
software developers don't make money on fixes, they make their money on new
features.
This is true of all, not just FS.
We keep asking for more and more things to be added to Jaws,
and this adds to the complexity of the program.
So, here's a thought:
How about if we stop asking for the bells and whistles,
and ask for more stability from one version to the next.
This is not a complaint, only a statement.

Hi Susie.
You could always go to the JAWS dictionary with Insert D, tab to add and hit
enter, put in the exclammation point and tab once and put in a blank space
for the pronunciation, then tab to OK.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS and puntuation

Hi All;
I am having a dilemma with my JAWS, and punctuation.I have my JAWS set to
sum in the punctuation, so JAWS does not say the punctuation, such as
question,
colon, semi colon, and so on, and it is working the way it is supposed to,
but for one thing, it keeps saying exclaim when I use the exclamation mark,
This is annoying, as I am a writer, and I don't like it to say the exclaim.
So can some one tell me how to fix this problem? Every thing is right, and
I even tried to put it to say none, but it still says exclaim.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 11 security update

2009-10-24 Thread Becky B
If you go to the Help menu of JAWS and hit enter, you then down-arrow to,
Check for Updates and hit enter. You then hit the spacebar on the item
which will probably be at the top and says security update for JAWS
11.0.734. After you check it, you have to tab over to ok and hit the
spacebar. It will then start to download update with the clicking sound.
You will have two more OK buttons, the last one being to restart your
computer.

Hilbert,

The short answer is no. If it is coming out on DVD and you only have a
CDRW drive, then your computer isn't capable of reading DVD's. I would
call sales about this and ask if there is a way you can get the software
on CD. If they say there isn't a way to do that, then you could copy
the downloaded version to a CD. I hope they will be able to make
accommodation for you. My guess is that there will be many people
calling with the same complaint.

When I open O E, Jaws does not place the focus on the message list,

At this point, I must tab twice to get to the message list view.
This problem occurs with Jaws 9, 10, and 11, on all of my XP machines.

JAWS Public Beta 3 was posted late in the day yesterday, October 6th. The
details and full list of Enhancements can be found at:
http://www.freedomscientific.com/downloads/jaws/JAWS-public-beta.asp

If you have one of the previous Public Beta versions already installed, you
can use the check for updates feature in the Help Menu to get this build.
Alternatively, you can download the full build from the Freedom Scientific
page above or the download page for JAWS and install it directly. It does
not require that the earlier versions were installed. If they were, you can
just install this one right over top.

As with the previous two versions of JAWS 11 Public Beta, it will work fully
functional provided you have JAWS 10 or higher authorization installed.
Otherwise, it work as an evaluation copy requiring a reboot every 40
minutes.

We thank everyone that participated in the Beta process. There were hundreds
of reports which have lead to a very solid version of JAWS. We are in the
final days of adjustments now and on track for an October 21st final
release.

Hi Lenny,

Have you tried widening your subject line? If you haven't use the steps
below to do so. These are steps are for XP / Outlook Express users. I
don't know if they will work with Vista / Windows Mail or XP / Outlook.
While in Outlook Express press the alt + V keystroke for the view menu.
2. Arrow down to Columns and press enter or just press the letter C .
3. Arrow down to Subject and with Subject highlighted press the
keystroke alt + W. You will get a message stating how many pixels wide your
subject line is currently set for. Back space this number out and type 400
or 425. I currently have mine set at 430. This will widen your subject
line so more print will fit. After you type in your desired number of
pixels tab to okay and press enter. Hope this helps. Take care.

I am not sure when this started but I recently noticed since I joined a
recycle list. In this list you are to post offer, wanted, taken or
received
plus the item and your town in the county. Jaws reads it with the pc
cursor
but if I try to read it with the jaws cursor it sometimes drops the last
few
words. An example of one of the subject lines is offer, gold drapes for

word it stops at the word for then reads the time as the next word. It
also
sometimes starts reading something from my address book.

Re: [JAWS-Users] slight sluggishness with jfw 11?

2009-09-18 Thread Becky B
I wonder how much of this sluggish problem is actually due to the focus
problem. In OE it usually reads messages ok, but too frequently when you
delete a message it doesn't start reading the next message automatically. I
do not have this problem with JFW 10. I think something has to be done
about the focus problem. Although 11 has some nice features, I'm not sure
it is worth the annoying focus problem to use it. I find myself going back
to 10. And yes, I have filled out the FS form.

Yes, it's not one specific thing per say, but just a general slowness when
trying to read something or navigating around a page and so on. Going up and
down the list box of e-mails messages in outlook 2003, pages with lots of
links in IE etc. JFW 10 just feels snappier and over all more responsive.
That's why I thought I'd ask around first to get an idea if it just might be
my machine and set up.

 Hello list,

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed a slight sluggishness when using
jaws 11 as opposed to jfw 10?

I've been switching back and forth between both versions since somethings
like firefox and outlook I'm finding work better with 10.0 and when I'm
using 11, it's as though there's a little hesitation with the reading
commands. Especially in IE8 and in any sort of word processing app. I'm
usually running between 23 and 31 processes at any given time with both
versions. I'm running xp pro and office 2003. Nothing out of the ordinary.

It's nothing drastic, but enough to be noticeable.

I'm just curious if it may just be me.

 Thanks,
 Cristobal

All,

We have just gone live with the first update to the public beta version
of JAWS 11. You can get this update two ways.

1. Use your check for update feature in the Help Menu of JAWS 11 Public
Beta version.
2. Go to the Download link for JAWS 11.0..536 and download the full
build to your machine and install it.

Note, you can install it right over top of the first one or you can
install it on a machine without having ever installed the first public
beta. Makes no difference.

The full list of enhancements will be posted to the What's New page on
September 9th. Below is the changes to the Research It feature which
we hope you will all look at and try out with the new build.

Research It
Note: For a demonstration of Research It, listen to the August 2009
FSCast.

Features such as Web Slices in Internet Explorer 8 and gadgets saved in
your Windows Sidebar are intended to make it easy for you to quickly
obtain information. This material is presented in a format that is quick
to scan visually. However, when using assistive technology tools, there
is often extra information presented that is easier to ignore visually
than when listening or reading with braille.

Research It is a new feature that provides quick access to information
while also making it easy to return to your primary task. Use just a few
keystrokes to look up information and display salient data in the
Virtual Viewer. When you have finished researching, press another
keystroke to return to the task you were performing before the research
started. All that is required to use Research It is an Internet
connection.

There are multiple ways to launch and use Research It. By default,
Wiktionary is the primary look up source. This means that while the
cursor is on a word in a document or Web page, you can press the default
keystroke, INSERT+WINDOWS Key+R, to quickly lookup the Wiktionary
description for that word. You can always change the primary lookup
source at any time using the JAWS Configuration Manager, which lets you
select which lookup source to use as the JAWS default or as the default
for individual applications. As you become more familiar with Research
It, and as more lookup modules are created and made available to you,
you will want to change the default look up source used by JAWS, or just
use a different look up source on the fly.

The most efficient way to search for a term is to use the new layered
keystroke, INSERT+SPACEBAR, R. By pressing and releasing
INSERT+SPACEBAR, and then pressing R, you can open the Research It edit
field to type a word or expression of interest. This can be a zip code,
or city and state, or city and country that can be used with the Weather
look up tool to read a forecast, or a date that is used to view baseball
or football schedules and scores, or a word to use with the Wikipedia
search query to view its meaning or description. After viewing these
results, press ESC to close the Virtual Viewer window and return to your
original focus point.

If you are a software developer or script developer, you can create and
customize your own lookup module DLL and tailor it to your
organization's needs. For example, if your company specializes in
medical equipment, you can create a lookup source that is essentially a
glossary of medical and industry terms. A developer's guide that
outlines formatting for rule sets and debugging techniques is available
at Research It Developer's Guide.

The next section provides examples of how to use Research It. If you
need more information, refer to the Research It topic in the JAWS help
file.

Research It Examples
The following shows how you can use the Weather, Wikipedia, NFL Scores,
and Reuters Top News Stories search options in Research It to look up
specific information.

Use the Weather lookup source to receive the current weather forecast
for any location based on city name, airport code, or zip code. The
following example uses the INSERT+SPACEBAR, R keystroke.

Press INSERT+SPACEBAR, R to open the Research It edit field.
In the edit field, type your current location, for example, St.
Petersburg, Florida, or your local airport code, for example, TPA, or
your local zip code, for example, 33771, and then press ENTER.

The Research It dialog box opens with a list of available resource
items. The primary search item always appears first in the list.
Use the UP and DOWN ARROWS or first letter navigation to select Weather
and then press ENTER.
After a few seconds, the Virtual Viewer window opens and displays the
weather forecast for the entered location. After reading the
information,

Amen to that one. Happy birthday, Rick, and thanks for your tireless
willingness to help others. Hey, and most of the time he even knows what
he's talking about too.

Birthday hugs,
Becky

Hi Everyone,

Today, August 11th is a special day in the life of Richard Q. Justice. Yes,
it is his birthday. I am not sure of his age, whether he is old enough to
drive, drink, or retire, but being a member of the Moderator's Union we know
that retirement is out of the picture since their benefit package basically
sucks. Would you all rise from your keyboards, place one hand on your
keyboard, one hand on your screen reading program of choice, and please join
me in singing Happy Birthday to Rick. We all know what an invaluable
asset he is to the lists' and this would be a nice thank you to him. Thanks
much, take care.

Mike
