[JAWS-Users] 32 vs. 64 bit

2010-10-05 Thread rich
Hi all.
If I buy a new computer, would it be better to get a 64 bit than a 32 bit one?

I try to hold on to things for as long as possible and would rather be prepared
for future growth, and not have to upgrade in a yearr or so.

What considerations are there. For example, can I transfer all of my programs
and info from my old , 32 bit computer to a new64 bit one?

If all things will be 64 bit in the future, wouldn't it make sense to upgrade
to that system now?

Thanks for any thoughts.

[JAWS-Users] Changes with un-install of older versions?

2010-10-02 Thread rich
Hi all;
I have 11.0 and XP home.
I was in the middle of un-installing my 10.0 to give me more space on my PC.
As I was un-installing, the JAWS speech got very slow and I panicked, thinking
I might be screwing up my settings, so, I canceled the un-instal.
I still have the 10.0 and use the 11.0 version.
Why did the speech get slow during this action?
How or should I un-install my older versions?
I assume I go to the ADD or Remove section and proceed with the directions of
un-installing my 10.0.
Oh, would this effect any of my merged settings on 11.0?

Thank you for any help.

[JAWS-Users] I E and history

2010-08-24 Thread rich
Hi all;
I have 11.0 and XP home.
I think I have I E 8.
Just recently, when I go to look at the history in I E by hitting control H, I
only get 20 items listed.
Usually, I would hear History and get to choose which of the dates I want to
look at.
My settings are for 14 days but, I can not find any dates to look at when I
open the history.
Again, the only showing is a list of 20 items.

How can I get it back to the original view?

Thanks

Hi all;
I have XP home and 11.0.
I noticed that on a particular web site, by hitting K, that the book mark
[place mark]had moved down the page a bit.
When I tried to change it back to the normal spot, by hitting control K, the
book/place mark did not move .

Has the key stroke changed in 11.0?

Thanks!

Hello rich,

You can make the change in configuration manager for HJ Pad. Use JAWS key
with the number six on the alphanumeric part of the keyboard while working
in HJ Pad to launch the program's configuration manager. Use Alt+S to
bring

up the settings menu. Use down arrow to graphics and symbols and press
enter key. Use tab key a few times and you will find a group of radio
buttons. Use up or down arrow key in the group of radio buttons. Choices
will be all, labeled and no graphics. With focus on the no
graphics
radio button, use tab key to the OK button and press enter key. Use
CTRL+S

to save changes and Alt+f4 to close the configuration manager for HJ Pad.

Take care.

The following came to me from another list, hope this
answers some questions.

Chris Munoz wrote in an interesting post on Blindtech this
week. He told us how to send text messages via email. If
you don't have a text message plan, you can still send text
messages and receive replies in your email. You just need
the recipients phone number and their cell provider.

If you're friends number is 5552223113, and they are with
tmobile, send an email to:

5552223...@tmomail.net

You can add a subject and put the message in the body of the
email form.

They receive the text message and, when they reply, it comes
to your inbox. Here are the email suffixes yo! u add to
phone numbers for each provider:

Verizon Wireless: (cell#)@vtext.com,

ATT: (cell#)@mobile.att.net,

Cingular: (cell#)@mycingular.com,

Nextel: (cell#)@messaging.nextel.com,

T-Mobile: (cell#)@tmomail.net,

Sprint: (cell#)@messaging.sprintpcs.com,

Tracfone: (cell#)@cingularme.com,

and if unknown carrier: (cell#)@teleflip.com

I'm going to use this method when I'm working and don't have
time to muss about with my phone. It's an easy way to send
text messages and you get the response in your email which
is nice!

Could I hook up my existing monitor and printer to this?
What about the devices I have installed software for such as camera etc.
Would these things be transferable? or, would I have to install the software

By the way, I presently have 384 M B RAM, for $60.00 I could bump it up to

You could transfer all your programs and such with a program like PcMover.
The problem comes in as far as the operating system. This is for
technical as well as operational and security reasons.

From a technical standpoint, you'd need to make sure that the hardware on
the new machine would work with your old operating system. Also, you'd
have to get a machine without an operating system which usually means
building your own or having somebody build it to your specifications.
That's doable, but these days, you can buy a system for less money than
you can build it.

From an operational and security standpoint, you now have XP Home. XP
support is going away, the support will end in 2014. This means after
2014, you will no longer be getting any updates for security holes and
threats. Additionally, XP is inherently more security flawed than Windows
7.

The drawback to updating for you might be financial. For Win 7, you'll
really need Jaws 11. For Vista, Jaws 8 is the earliest version I think,
although Jaws 9 is better in my opinion. And, since most commercial
vendors are peddling the 64-bit editions of Vista and Win 7, this means
you'll need at least Jaws 10 since that is the first version that
supported a 64-bit edition. Because Jaws and really any screen-reader,
buries itself so deeply in the operating system, earlier versions won't
work on 64-bit operating systems, even though other run-of-the-mill 32-bit
programs will work.

Hi Steve,

While the specs are nice, although those specs are the bare minimum in
my
opinion, the fact is, if you're going to run Jaws 11 on a computer
running

Windows 7 64 bit edition, there is absolutely no point in using that
computer unless it's got at least 4 gigs of RAM, otherwise the thing
will be

slower than molasses.

If she wanted a slow computer, she might as well keep the one she has
and

save her money.

A second point I would make is that a 320 gig hard drive will become
obsolete in less than three months, if they aren't already, so why pay
all
that money for something that will be obsolete in less than three
months.

The minimum one can get just in a laptop alone is 500 gigs, unless one
is

getting a net book, in which case, the biggest I've seen is a 250 hard
drive, and these are solid state drives, so, again, why would she pay
250
dollars for a computer that only has 2 gigs of RAM and a 320 gig drive,
it

wouldn't make sense.

Heck, if I'm not mistaken, with all the features of Windows 7, the darn
OS

will fill that 320 gigger in a matter of days. Smile.

In any case, at the very least, if she isn't planning on upgrading in
the
near future, then I would definitely say that using a computer with
those
specs and running Jaws 11 64 bit edition would just make using the
computer

way too tedious.

Not really.
I think HJ pad is in files in my documents, not recent files.
It never used to work this way.

Hi Rich;

I think I have figured out what is going on. When you open HJ Pad are you
opening the file menu, then going to recent files, and seeing a list of
files? If so, these files can't be put in alphabetical order because
these

are put in the order that they are created, with the most recent created
file in the number 1 position and the oldest created document/file in the
higher numbered/lower in the list position. In turn, all of your files
are

saved in alphabetical order in My Documents but, not in the recent files
list. Is this what is happening? Take care.

 HI Rich;

I guess it doesn't matter in what format you save files in because, as
far

as I know they are saved in My Documents. Are you saying that when you
open
HJ Pad there are files/folders sitting right there in HJ Pad? If you
have

Hello rich,

I don't have Windows XP Home, but as far as I can tell HJ Pad doesn't have
its own options for sorting. Check in the control panel to see if the
different applets are sorted in a descending order. When you open the
control panel go into the view menu and use down arrow key and make sure
either list or details is checked. In the view menu use down arrow to
the arrange by menu, use right arrow key to move into the submenu and
then

find the name choice by using up or down arrow key. Press enter on the
name choice. Of course, only do so if files are not in the sort order
you

want. This action should reverse the sort order for the control panel.
Open HJ Pad and see if the files in the open dialog box are now sorted
correctly. If not then go back into the control panel and when the icons
are sorted by name in ascending order then go under the tools menu and
open
options. Use CTRL+tab to move to the view page. Use tab key to move to
the
button that lets you apply current view to all folders and use that
button.

Close out of the box and check HJ Pad again to find out if files are
correctly sorted.

I hope you get it working.

Take care.

I don't know if this is happening.
For years, I've been adding to files and this problem has never happened.

I started using HJ Pad when I was introduced and training with JAWS and
kept

certain files there.
I also have a bunch of files in microsoft word.
It befuddles me on why this occurred in the first place.
In my weird organization of thoughts, I keep a HJ pad section for certain
things that access by a short cut key and a word section for other
files.

Another queer problem is, why is it when I fix the problem by entering
on
name in applications, does it not save to the next time I use this
folder.

2010-05-09 Thread rich

Thank you for your patience.
I open HJ pad, then control O, then shift tab to list view.
JAWS starts at the Z's and says not selected the name of the Z
filer/folder 1 of 50.
When I do the same thing for microsoft word, the list begins with the A's.
I can get toHJ pad either by going to JAWS then run HJ pad or[I have a
short cut key for this]
Or, I can go to microsoft word and arrow to my files and open it up that
way.

Boy, this is weird, since I just tried the latter the folders were in
alphabetical order, but when going directly to HJ pad they remained in the
opposite order.

We have a little misunderstanding here. What I am asking is, after you
open
HJ Pad, do you then open the file menu, arrow down to recent files, and
view files you have created right here?

Why don't we start from the beginning. Give us step by step directions
exactly what you are doing to get to these files/folders that are screwed
up.

The only place that files are stored in HJ Pad is in the File Menu in
Recent
Files. Any files/folders created in HJ Pad are stored in My Documents
unless otherwise specified. If I am wrong with what I am stating will
someone please jump in and straighten me out!Take care.

Hello Rich,

Use CTRL+O to bring up the open dialog box. Use shift+tab until you are
in

the list view of files and folders for a selected folder in the look-in
box. Focus should be in the list view and not in the look-in box. Make
sure no item is selected. If an item is selected use CTRL+spacebar to
remove the selected state. Use application key and then down arrow to the
sort menu. Use right arrow key into the submenu and then down arrow key

find the choice for ascending order. Press enter on the choice.

 Hi Rich,

I am not sure why you are not finding the choice. Unfortunately, I am
not
at a system with XP Home but I know that with XP Professional the
arrange
by choice is present. Make sure that after using CTRL with O to bring
up
the open dialog box and that after you use shift with tab to move into
the

list view that there is nothing selected. If a file or folder name is
selected then the context menu that you get when using the application
key

will have choices specific to that file or folder. If JAWS doesn't say
not
selected then try using CTRL with spacebar to take the selection off of
the
file or folder. Of course, if nothing is selected and you use the CTRL
with
spacebar command then you will be selecting as it is a toggle command.
When
nothing is selected then use the application key and check for a choice
with
a submenu that would have to do with setting the order of the list such
as
the arrange by or sort by. If you don't find such a menu then
perhaps

someone else with XP home can give you a suggestion.

 Take care.

[JAWS-Users] Word question

2010-03-24 Thread rich
I have JAWS 10.00 and XP home.

My sighted wife noticed that in Word, that paragraph symbols are appearing
and can not be removed.
She also says when she tries to go to another line, she is dropped 3 to 5 lines
down.

I've noticed, while in JAWS, I may try to edit an existing document and the
curser controls do not move as it should. For example, I will delete a letter
and when I go to read the work many more letters will have been deleted.

Thanks for any help.

Hello Marilyn;
Here are my 3 messages that I did not receive any replies.

Hi all;
  I have XP and 10.0
When I copy an e mail message from O E then paste it in to HJ pad or Word,
When JAWS reads it to me, there are added symbols in the message body.
These symbols are not read while in O E but only after I put it somewhere

Hi all;
   I have XP and 10.0.
I have a cordless keyboard and mouse.
My sighted wife noticed that while using the mouse, the curser on the screen
was scrolling automatically and she could not control it with the mouse.
I noticed, while using the keyboard, when trying to click on links with
the enter button, nothing would happen.

I also tried using the JAWS curser which did not work either.
While having this trouble, when I hit the tab key, JAWS would announce
virtual curser.

The batteries are fairly new in the keyboard.

Any thoughts?

It will review my search line, then jump to the links for 1, 2, 3 and so

Pressing H for headings, or U for unvisited links won't get me to the

I'm using JAWS 11.

Re: [JAWS-Users] please tell me all is not lost!

Would you be able to give specific directions on how to perform a restore?
My fear is that is the way I lost this information in the first place when I
used Fast Access DSL to go back in time.

If I originally went back to 12/11/09, What point would I now go back to in
order to possibly retrieve the lost information?

Thank you for the help.

I can tell you right now if they are not in a deleted folder or some other
folder. Then you won't get them back. A restore may do the job, but
wouldn't count on that method either. See emails unless saved separately
are not stored as a file on the harddrive. The email program saves the
folder as one file with no backup. The restore may be able to pull that
file from its archives, but even that would be luck and worth a shot.

Another thing to try is when you get that dialog box that says Outlook

Do

Don't ask me this again.
Yes No . If you space bar that box and check the box that states Don't

do that I don't know how to get that prompt back again if you wanted it!
Hope this helps. Take care.

I had issues with O E and now that I made some changes, when I delete
collapsed messages, JAWS asks if I want to delete all messages. In the
past, when I hit the delete button, the collapsed messages would go
directly in to my delete folder with out any prompt.
How can I get this feature back again?

Also; I have not heard from the list on the exact steps to recover
lost O E info. such as contacts and e mails.
Remember, I tried to restore to a previous date while in Fast Access
DSL with my previous O E problems.
When the system came up I noticed my information was gone.
For instance, around 12/25, I set the restore date to 12/11. O E
delivered about 600 messages from 12/15 and nothing prior. I had to go
through each of those messages that had been previously read.
The DSL technician said my info was lost since there was nothing on
the server, and probably gone from the hard drive.
I am afraid if I experiment with the system restore that I will screw
everything up again, and my wife will get very angry. She has a mean
left hook. with me again.

Thanks for any help.

I have had this problem ever since I got a new laptop. Of course, there
were too many variables in the upgrade to know the culprit. I went from
XP
and JAWS 5.1 and Office to Vista, JAWS 9 and Office 2007. Despite all of
these changes, I tend to blame this on running Karen's Replicator. It not
only runs in the system tray, it is an invisible and can be noticed by
pressing Insert F10. I figured this might confuse the focus issue when an
application closes. Just a guess! Do you have any invisible processes?

The class is using the print copy? Also, there are different editions of
it
on the Web. Your best bet may be - if you can't get a printed copy of
their
book and don't have OCR - to download a .pdf version of what they're using
(if such can be procured) and use it as the basis for pagination purposes,
at least. (The .pdf might be a more accurate rendering of the printed
book.
HTML, being computer based and on the computer screen, cannot really be.)
As I said, there are different editions of the CCC on the Web; one of
which - for instance - is that of the Knights of Columbus.

I have searched for and hlooked at some of the Google results. You might
profit from doing the same or a similar search and spending some time
 investigating what you get.

current round of combo box related questions. My answer to each question
is
 in parentheses after it.
What is the difference with hitting enter and using the alt. down arrow?
It sounds like you have to do both.
(You do, usually.) (See your final question and my answer to it.)
Is the alt. down/up arrow like a switch? and one does not have to use
this
combination when navigating the particular list?
(No. While navigating the list, you use just the arrow keys. Alt+down
 opens; alt+up closes.)
Is a combo box only present for using forms?
(Very theoretical, that question. You will need to 'edit' by choosing an
item from the combo box. At the moment that requires that you hit the
enter
key or left-mouse single-click. JAWS interprets this as 'forms mode on'.)

 Thanks again.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Reading links with S, vs down arrow

A combo box to a sighted user appears as a drop down list that all of the
entries appear when they click on the box. they then move the mouse to
the
entry they want and click again. The box then collapses and the
selected
  entry is shown.

In JAWS, first you need to press Enter in the combo box to enter forms
  mode.
Then press Alt down arrow to have the entire list open or drop down.
  Use
the down and up arrows to select the entry you want. Then press Alt up
arrow to close the combo box.

Sometimes, a page is designed to change immediately based on their
  selection
as soon as the value is selected. This is a problem for JAWS users in
  that
if you just arrow down through the selection, the page will update
immediately on a selection that is probably not desired. To prevent
this,
you absolutely need to use Alt down arrow to open the list and Alt up
  arrow
to close the combo box. The page will update at this point on these
  dynamic
  pages.

I have 9.0 and XP home.
I noticed when reading the list of links on a web page, that when using
  the
letter S, to move down the links, that JAWS misses some of the links.
If I use the down arrow, I get all of the links.

  Is this right?
Also, I was listening to the audio tutorial mentioned a few weeks ago

  Could someone explain this more?

Re: [JAWS-Users] audio CD

2008-07-29 Thread Rich Hamel
When I went to the system tray in checked on the volumes, I tabbed through
all of the choices and none of the mutes were checked. Meaning that the mute
was off.
Another question; After I put a CD in to the drawer, and the E drive comes
with a list of tracks, do I need to open Windows media player.
I assume I would not have to do this.

Thanks.

 Hello,

If you are using windows Media Player for playing your CD, it also has a
mute button. you might check to make sure it isn't checked. When in
Windows Media Player press Alt-P to bring up the play menu. Use up arrow
a
couple of times and press enter on the volume menu choice. Use down arrow
and find out if the mute choice is checked. If so then press enter to
remove the checkmark. If function key 7 was accidentally pushed while
playing an audio file in Windows Media Player then the program might have
 been muted.

If you are using a different program than Windows Media Player then also
check the program to see if there is a mute button in the menu with the
controls that might have been pressed.

 Take care.

It should be a good thing. Is the mute checkbox unchecked? I am not sure
but
possibly the WAV volume and enabled disabled box should also be unchecked.

After that if it doesn't work then it must be something in your media
player
and I have no knowledge of that really.

I am surprised though with all the audiophiles on this list someone else

After you use the Scan your computer button, the subsequent dialog box
has
a tree view for choosing which drives should be scanned. use the tab key
to
move to the tree view. Use the up and down arrow keys to make sure only
the
hard drives are checked. If the floppy drive or CD-ROM drive choices are
checked and there are no disks in those drives then you might get an error
message letting you know that no disks are in the drives. This might not
be
the problem but check it out to make sure.

Is there a way to run the entire program without having to monitor it?

 Hi Rich,

When running Super Anti-spyware, make sure that the drive that you
want to scan is checked. Apparently, one of your other drive is
checked like the A drive, CDR or CDRW and you don't have a floppy
disk or CD in there. See below:

 SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition
 SUPERAntiSpyware Scanner
Please select the drive(s) to scan and your scanning options. Click
 Next to begin scanning.
 Scan Location
 A:\ - Removable Quick Scan
 C:\ - Fixed Drive (NTFS)
 D:\ - Fixed Drive (NTFS)
 F:\ - CD-ROM
 G:\ - CD-ROM

 Hope this helps,

 Lennie

Rich, did you open the toolbars submenu to see what's in there? Maybe this
get it now page is a feature of one of the toolbars that you may have
installed by accident. So if you open view, and open the toolbars submenu,
you can see the toolbars that are available and show/hide, as well as
 customize them. Hope that helps.

My question is; What are the tool bars? and is there a better way to have

 Subject: [JAWS-Users] Install problem

I hope my subject line is O.K. since I posted a question a couple of days
ago and got no response, I am altering the subject line a bit.

 I have XP and 6.0.
I am trying to upgrade to 8.0.
I put the new disc and followed the directions.
I also loaded the real speak disc that came with it.
After the install, I have both the original 6.0 and new 8.0 on my desk
top.
During the install, I used the typical install as recommended not the
 custom.
I was never asked for an authorization number or given a choice to merge
 settings.
My goal was to merge my original settings with the new version.

I can not get the 8.0 to work however.
Even when I click on the desk top version that says 8.0 and I go to check
it, JAWS says that I am on version 6.0.

In my add/remove programs the 8.0 items are listed as Freedom Scientific.

 I am afraid of un-installing the 6.0.

Should I try to install the 8.0 again? If so, how do I merge settings to
keep my 6.0 settings/short cuts etc.?
Why did the 8.0 not show up, even though the install seemed to work?

 Thank you for any help.

 Rich

[JAWS-Users] FW: Question about JAWS, 7.3, and the Blackboard Discussion Board

Subject: Question about JAWS, 7.3, and the Discussion Board

I was posed the following questions about a students experience with
JAWS and the 7.3 discussion board. Does anyone out there have more
experience with JAWS and what is reasonable to expect from Blackboard?
I was supporting a student yesterday that uses the JAWS reader to
navigate her laptop. She was having difficulty replying to a post
within the discussion board of her course.
Prior to this semester, she was able to post replies without
encountering any problems. Now, when she navigates to the reply
section her JAWS reader does not see any editable forms (like text
boxes) and turns the Forms option off.
She is able to manually restart it, but it confirms that no forms are
available. Here are the things we tried to resolve the problem:

 * Backed out of Blackboard and logged back in. A few times this
worked. Probably 2 out of 10 attempts, but I believe this was due to
the fact that her cursor was over the Message box already and she
may have hit her touchpad causing it to select the form.
 * Tried logging in as a different user and checked how the reader
performed in a different discussion board. No differences were noted.
 * I was able to manually select the field utilizing her touchpad,
but this isn't an option for her.
 * I turned down the sensitivity and tapping option of the touchpad
believing that she may be inadvertently hitting the touchpad causing
her cursor to select the page outside of the Message text box she
 was trying to edit.

Is it possible that her JAWS problem with viewing the reply section
within 7.3 is due to the recent upgrade? Have any other students
 utilizing readers expressed similar problems?
We did other sections within 7.3 and all seemed functional.

 THanks, GLen

[JAWS-Users] Firewalls?

2007-08-03 Thread Rich Hamel
I have JAWS 6.0 and XP I am on DSL.
.
After reading one of the messages, on this list, I looked in my control
panel and found that my Windows firewallwas off.
I clicked it on.
Since then, I have had a terrible time with my MacAfee and Spybot.
My MacAfee says that I am not protected and I can not click on the fix
symbol. Even my sighted wife says it doesn't work with the mouse.
For some reason, prior to this, I was getting a message from MacAfee that it
was updating and downloading a anti spam file.

I also have been getting a lot of messages from Spybot that ask if I want to
allow or deny certain files that have a MacAfee title to it.
I usually click allow.
I recently updated the new beta version of Spybot.

I went back to un check theWindows firewall but this did not change the
MacAfee or Spybot messages.

My questions are. Do I need the Windows firewall checked? and why or why not.
Also, if I want to un install Spybot how should I do it? It seems to be
interfering more often.

Thank you.

 Rich:

You can not run multiple fire wall programs under windows at the same
time.
Because the windows fire wall works only one way, its best you go with
 something else such as macafee.

Now since you are still having these issues after turning off windows fire
wall, it might be best if youninstall macafee and reinstall it again and
see
 what happens. Hope this helps.

For some reason, I have 2 identities in O.E. in one of my identities, I have
all of the contacts.

My question is; is there an easy way to transfer my contacts to the main
identity?

I tried exporting then importing, but this didn't work.

Thank you for any help.
