I have Windows 10 Anniversary edition and when I wake up the computer I
press Escape. It just says escape but I type in my 4 digit pin with no
feedback and it goes to the desktop or whatever was open. Don't know why but
I don't argue with success!

Works the same with Jaws 17 and 18.

The Insert and Escape keys, your best friend part two.

So useing the laptop keyboard layout in Jaws is an advantage, not a
drawback.

Again for this lesson I will call the capslock key the Jaws key and the
numpad insert key, the insert key.

For example: For some Jaws keystrokes you must use the numpad insert key
instead of the capslock key, plus a letter on the keyboard to accomplish a
task.

Example, If you are running Jaws from the system trey, Pressing numpad
Insert+J, Brings up the JAWS options menu window, with the options sub
Insert+menu
highlighted for you.

Pressing the capslock key, JAWSKey+J, Moves to the prior word and speaks it.

Another example, Pressing the Numpad Insert+H, Places JAWS Hot Keys in the
Virtual Viewer.

You can review them with the Arrow keys, and press the Escape key to close
this window.

Pressing the Caplocks key JAWSKey+H, speaks the current sentence.

So it's very nice to have another Jaws modifier key, to use when pressing
Jaws keystrokes involving the pressing of many keys on the keyboard.

**Now let us look at how to use Jaws layered keystrokes, Insert+Spacebar,
followed by a letter.

This means when you press Insert+Spacebar, you will hear a ding sound, you
then can press a certain letter or key to open one of the many options for
the Jaws layered keystrokes.

For example: Pressing Insert+Spacebar, followed by the ? Question mark, you
will hear:

Search commands press J.

Repeat last background notification from Skype press Shift+R.

Show recent speech history press H.

Clear recent speech history press Shift+H.

View text on clipboard press C.

Select text between marked place and current position press M.

Customize web page with Flexible Web press X.

ResearchIt press R.

OCR Feature Layer press O.

Table Navigation Layer press T.

Switch to your recent Windows Live Messages press Number row 1 through 5.

Text Analyzer press A.

Mute Synthesizer press S.

Lock Keyboard press L.

Toggle audio ducking press D.

So let us look at most of these layered keystrokes one at a time.

**Pressing either the Numpad Insert+Spacebar, or the Capslock Jaws
key+Spacebar, followed by the letter J, opens the search for Jaws
key+commands
window.

For example, after pressing Insert+Spacebar, followed by J, You are in a
Jaws search for commands edit box, type the word copy, press the tab key,
you are put in a Jaws HTML page of results.

You can use the Arrow keys or H, for heading or Insert+F7, for a Links list,
press the Escape key to close this window.

Below is an example of what comes up, when you type the word copy in to the
Jaws search for commands edit box, and press the Tab key, I have shortened
the results.

*Copy Selected Text To Clipboard. Control + C

Standard Windows copy command, usually found in the Edit menu, any selected
text or items will be copied to the Windows Clipboard. The selected items or
text can then be pasted into another window or application.

*View Clipboard Text. Insert + Space, C

The Clipboard Text Viewer displays all text that has been copied to the
Windows Clipboard using the standard Windows Copy and Cut commands.

*Virtualize Window. Alt + Insert + W

This keystroke displays the text in the current window in the Virtual
Viewer. You can then select the text and copy and paste it to another
application, such as an e-mail message. This is especially useful in error

I shop on the Amazon site quite a bit and generally have no trouble even
though I use Firefox instead of IE since the security is better according to
computer experts. But I have found that the Amazon app on my iPhone is
extremely accessible and seems to sync with my cart on the computer. I find
it easier to reorder items using the order list on the phone since it is a
continuous list instead of having items grouped into the separate orders. If
I actually place the order on the phone it uses the fingerprint to sign in

Gene, I'm sincerely sorry for bringing this about. We are strangers
communicating via impersonal, easily misconstrued email. I have two
concerns. One is that we all gain simple access to all websites, a distant
goal. The other is to reward websites that make accessibility a priority.
After the recent 60 Minutes episode attacking lawyers who randomly file
lawsuits against websites, hotels and other institutions for alleged
violations of the American with Disabilities Act, along with a movement in
Congress to cut back on private ADA-related lawsuits, I feel it is even
more incumbent on us to show appreciation for a company's accessibility
efforts. Whether or not you agree, and knowing your particular frustration
with the Amazon website, this is what motivated my posts in this thread.

All of us on this list have different experiences and different levels of
comfort with online activity. Despite my misgivings about separate
accessible websites, I understand why many screenreader users gravitate to
them. Watching family and friends as they grow into senior citizens, I also
assume that one day I will be equally baffled by ever-changing technology. I
find it hard enough as it is.

I would still urge you to limit your approach to any website owner to
specific problems you have. That's all I mean to say.

Let me add that I appreciate your numerous recent contributions to this
list, as I can tell others do as well.

The fact is that Amazon's website is unusually accessible. Rather than
write off an entire website as inaccessible when you may be having
problems but other screenreader users aren't, contact Amazon and specify
the exact problem. When I've done so with Amazon, I usually notice a fix

We owe such companies respect.

I've never had to use Amazon's return page, so it may be something for

Hi,
I am using WLM on Win 10 with Jaws 17 (not latest) and I get hundreds of

I am not sure you can get just Outlook and if you can it is expensive. I

Hi everyone, hope you guys are all having a great day.
So I was going to install windows live mail on my windows 10 laptop running
jaws 17 (not latest version), but I was told for it to work correctly I have
to have reading pain turned off. My problem is this and I'm sure a lot of
you can relate to this. I belong to 10 or so mailing lists, and that means
hundreds of messages per day. The mail client I'll be using needs to
provide the following workable feature with jaws.
I need jaws to read the senders name, subject, and then to proceed to read a
couple of lines of the body of the email, so I can decide weather to delete
the message or to open it for further reading. Right now I'm using outlook
on windows 7 laptop with jaws 15 and this feature works great.
As I'm scrolling through the messages in my imbox, I here for example
message unread, from mike, subject help with ie11, and then the date. Then I
hear jaws say for example hi guys I'm a beginner with ie11.
At that point I can decide weather to just hit my delete key or enter to
open it. This makes it easy to go through hundreds of messages per day.
I'm sure a lot of you know where I'm coming from.
So my problem is this windows laptop doesn't have outlook and I've visited
the office.com website and either I'm having a brain fart, or the website is
screwed up, or it's just not offered.
I want to buy outlook email client and nothing else. I don't want the
office 365 subscription but I can't figure it out. Can anyone help? Can
anyone steer me in the right direction?
Thanks again for any help

Re: [JAWS-Users] WLM it was RE: JAWS and a new computer

2015-11-11 Thread Sharon Gosling
I have entered nicknames for most of the contacts I use most often and I
just have to type the nicknames into the TO field separated by commas and
WLM puts in the actual email address. I usually have to tab and shift tab to
have the addresses read out.
I find it much easier to remember the nicknames than the beginning of the
actual email addresses.

Hi LeDon,
As long as a contact is saved to your contact list.
Just type four letters of the beginning of their email address into the Too
field.
Tab and Shift+tab, and WLM will fill the rest of the person's, email in for
you.
This has been a little bug in WLM, for a long time.
Good luck.

Hi LeDon,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Honestly, I do not know how to
make WLM autofill the To field. There very well may be a setting for this,
but thus far, I have not run a cross it. Typically, if I want to put the
receipients address into the To field without having to type them, I will
shift tab up to the "Select Contacts" button, find the contact in my list,
and press enter to put that address in my To field. I then scroll up or down
to find the next contact if I am sending to more than one receipient.

Hello Mike. I was able to get WLM to read as I wanted it to by following
your instructions. The only thing was after finding the view tab, I had to
tab down to, Message list View dropdown". Instead of what you told me to
look for. After pressing the space bar to open it, wow, there was my choice.
I selected it. I didn't have to tab to OK or save to make it take effect. I
want to thank you for your help. Without it I would never have found it.

May I ask you another question? When using outlook when I start a new email
and I type a letter outlook tries to fill in the to box automatically. If
that is not the one that I want then I use the arrow key to hunt for it. How
do you get WLM to automatically fill in the email address in the to field.
Is this clear or have I just flubbed up my description as usual? Thank you
so much for your help. LeDon.

Hi LeDon,

The latest version of Windows Live Mail is 2012. If Jaws is not reading what
is showing on the screen, then I suspect that this is a Jaws problem, not a
WLM problem. Did you change the view of your reading pane as I outlined for
you in an earlier message? If not, then you should check these settings. 1.
Open the View tab on the ribbon tab in WLM 2012. 2. tab down to the item
that reads "Message Line View". 3. Press the space bar to activate this
item. 4. Arrow down to the "One Line View" item and press enter to check
this choice. 5. Tab down to Apply and then around to OK, pressing enter on
both of these. 6. This should change the view so that each email you receive
tells you the sender, the subject, and the time and date that the message
was sent.

Let me know if this works for you or not. If it doesn't, then you should go
ahead and ask Freedom Scientific about the problem.

I did a search on Google and found the podcast. It was on Accessible World

It is the second half of a podcast that includes info about Firefox.
The link to download it is on this page:

The actual link is:

The part about Firefox is long and I made the mistake of letting it play on
the computer instead of downloading it to a podcast player so I did not
know how to skip ahead.
I use Vipre and have left the 2014 version in place as it is simple to
navigate but I will probably have to upgrade at some time. Actually, the
2015 version is confusing even for sighted novices as my sighted sister gave

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws stalling

2015-09-18 Thread Sharon Gosling

I am running Win 7, 6 gb of ram, latest Jaws.

I think my Jaws stalling problem was caused by the Win 10 upgrade icon
sitting in the system tray.
I had planned to upgrade to Win 10 but my Dell evidently has some error that
will not allow it to do so. So the icon just sat in the system tray for the
last month or two. Finally my brain connected a major problem I have been
having every day with this icon. The problem was that every morning when I
woke up my computer it would talk for maybe a minute and then the hard
drive would spin at top speed and Jaws would go silent and no keystrokes
seemed to work. It felt like something was taking over the computer. This
happened every morning and could last for ten or more minutes but I would
usually have to force a restart with the power button and that generally
helped, but sometimes it did it again.
I have both Vipre and Webroot anti virus running on my computer and neither
found any problem.
Then I got to thinking about reading that Microsoft was using computers that
had upgraded to Windows 10 to send out the upgrade to others or something
like that.
Anyway, I removed the update and the computer worked fine. But the next day
it was back and so was the problem. So I removed it again and then hid the
update. So far so good. Today I started the computer and it has worked
perfectly for two hours so far.

It all boils down to limited resources. No matter how much your system has
under the hood so to speak when everything tries accessing an internet
connection which as we all know is probably the slowest component of your
computing experience things are going to bog down until programs like Adobe
just to name one gets happy and finishes what it has to do. I've noticed
even with 8 GB of memory on a couple of systems it can happen that things
just take care of business in their own time. The less the memory the more
the lag on the system.

I know of somebody who has 2 GB of memory on a 32 bit system, trust me there
is a lot of spitting and sputtering on that thing before it settles down.

Kevin,

Would this be right after boot up, or at any time? Sometimes, JAWS was
stalling on me shortly after it restarts after log in, and I have discovered
that it was because of other items starting up at the same time from the
start up options in Task manager. Once I had disabled some of the
unnecessary items there, JAWS stopped doing this.
This has happened at times other than start up when a program has tried to
update itself. The automatic updates for software like Adobe and some others
that appear in the start up options can really cause JAWS to go berserk.

I would imagine that it only works with pop because the imap keeps the same
folder structure as the actual account such as with gmail.
The message rules button in WLM 11 is located in the folders tab in the one

To put imap messages into folders you would need to set it up on the
original site such as gmail.

"Where the From line contains a specific account", and in the next item you

Re: [JAWS-Users] Dropbox Question

2015-06-09 Thread Sharon Gosling
I think the problem is not with Dropbox but with your Autoplay settings for
the various content.
Type Autoplay into the search box in the start menu or get there however it
works on Windows 8.
For each type of content you can set what you want autoplay to do. Import
to Dropbox is just one of the choices and probably is what is chosen in your
autoplay settings. For all video and audio formats I mostly have mine set to
"ask me every time". This causes the autoplay menu to appear whenever I
insert any media into the computer.
For various DVD and CD formats you might wish to choose to have it begin
playing in various programs that you can choose.
The autoplay settings are easy to navigate. Tab to the media types and use
the arrows to choose your preference. Then choose Save.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Mozilla or Internet Explorer browser

2015-04-15 Thread Sharon Gosling
I can't remember exactly the procedure for installing the plain old
favorites since it has been so long since I did it. One way to check if it
installed is to see if it added the favorites menu to the menu bar. It is
right after the bookmarks menu. I always update the FF when a new version
comes out for security reasons and so far the plain old favorites continues
to work.
Firefox often gives a pop up that it prevented a page from redirecting you
to another page. I usually ignore these except on the Bard site. The FF
shortcut is Alt A for this as well but only when the pop up is there.
I am a real security freak so I have followed the directions on Kim
Komando's website and disabled the Adobe flash plug in on both browsers.
When I want to see a video I can click to allow the program to run. It is
amazing how many websites run flash just to do some little unnecessary flash
animations. On sites where I regularly watch videos I have clicked the
always allowed button for those sites.
This does cause the pop up asking to run flash flash to come up but I
usually just ignore it as well and it goes away or at least it doesn't bug
me again. This was recommended because flash gets so many vulnerabilities
that it is safer to only use it when necessary.

One thing that makes it especially nice when switching back and forth

This is available from

I never use the bookmarks in FF but always use the Favorites menu. The
only quirk I have found is that when adding a favorite from FF it works
best when choosing the Add favorite and then using alt tab twice to move
away from the window and then right back. Then just tab to the add button
as usual.
One other difference between IE and FF is that to open a private window

Answer: You can use the JAWS Cursor in Firefox after turning off Firefox's

Hi,

Firefox and Thunderbird both use Direct2D renderingby default. This
prevents the JAWS cursor from detecting information.
Fortunatelyit is easy to disable this rendering. You need to do it
once for each versionof Firefox and Thunderbird you use on your
system. To do
this you need to settwo configuration variables to true:
gfx.direct2d.disabled, and layers.acceleration.disabled.

1. Open the Configuration Editor. In Firefox, enter about:config in the
address bar. In Thunderbird, go to the Tools menu and navigate to
Options,
Advanced, General, then Config Editor.

2. Once in the Configuration editor, press TAB until you are in the list
of options.

3. Pressing UP or DOWN ARROW will move you between options or typing the
first few letters of an option's name will move you to a specific
option
in the list. In this case, type gfx and press DOWN ARROW to
gfx.direct2d.disabled.

4. Assuming the option is set to false, press the APPLICATIONS KEY to
open the context menu and choose Toggle. This will change the
option to true.

5. Go through the same process for layers.acceleration.disabled.

6. Close the Configuration Editor and restart Firefox or Thunderbird.
The JAWS cursor should now show content.

This might sound like a dumb question but have you checked to be sure that
the mousepad has not been activated if it is a laptop? When I took my
laptop for repair it came back with the mousepad on and I could no longer
access the normal ways to turn it off. I had to take it back so they could
fix whatever setting controlled the

Windows Mobility Center which is how I turn the mousepad on and off.
The symptoms you describe sound like what happens to me when the mousepad is
turned on.

Just a thought.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Geek Squad and jumping JAWS

Hello-

I just took my computer to Geek Squad for a tune-up and cleanup. I have
done it several times in the past. This time I am running into several
problems. When I have different Word docs open or I am writing an email
using Outlook 2007 JAWS appears to jump to other Windows without warning.

For example, I was writing an email and the focus kept jumping to things
like the Desktop, time and date or battery check and I had to alt tab back
to my email multiple times and its happening as I write this. The same
thing happens when I am working in a MS Word doc. Any thoughts on how to
get back my JAWS stability? I have JAWS 14 and Windows 7

Also, I went on the web and to my bank. When I tried to log in the bank
gave me a notice that it did not recognize my computer and I had to go
through a security process to get the recognition back. I never had these
problems before with Geek Squad but I noticed that the people are new and
not as sharp as the old ones who suddenly disappeared.

Thanks in advance,

Wayne

Re: [JAWS-Users] Webroot SecureAnywhere AntiVirus

2015-03-21 Thread Sharon Gosling
I like this antivirus and find it usable although only with Jaws cursor on
the laptop. It runs pretty much automatically and doesn't require much
oversight. I like that it has an internet console to control several
functions. I especially like that it works with another antivirus
installed.. I have Vipre as well. Here is the letter I sent to the group a
while back about the program:

I read about the webroot security program on the Kim Komando website and
decided to try the free trial just to see if I could manage it with Jaws. I
did do research on it first and was especially influenced by the article in
PC magazine.

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2470312,00.asp

It is a web based program and will work even with another anti virus
installed. I have Vipre but am totally paranoid about security since I do
much online banking and shopping.

The following link is a page that gives detailed information about the
features of the program.
In IE you can click on a feature and read the details. This did not work in
Firefox.

http://www.webroot.com/us/en/support/how-to-updates??utm_source=consumer-receipt&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Learn%20More%20-%20Receipt
I was able to install the program by myself although all interaction is
through the Jaws cursor. Many settings are automatic and it shows up in the
System Tray and tells you whether protection is on. Several choices are
available when using the applications key on the System Tray icon.
The main screen takes some patience using the Jaws cursor and the left mouse
simulation key.
I have spent much time yesterday and today to see just how well I was able
to use the program with Jaws. Most of the settings are automatic so it is
not necessary to change much.
What I especially like is that they have an online console where you can
find the information and it works well with Jaws and IE 11.It is a bit
strange that you can press enter on many items on the webpage that are not
marked as links but they work that way and allow the information to appear
at the end of the list of choices. This did not work with Firefox which I
generally use as my default browser. Also, when doing Google searches in IE
Webroot gives an evaluation of each link which jaws reads. This does not
work with jaws in Firefox.

If you are interested in learning about the program or buying it at half
price then go through the following link on the Kim Komando website.

http://www.webroot.com/us/en/home/promotions/kim?utm_source=komando&utm_medium=komando-banner&utm_campaign=komando

On Kim's site there is an option to download a free trial which I did and
after the two weeks I decided to buy the program. But you can't just click
on the Buy It button in the trial or they charge you the full price. You
have to go back to the Kim Komando page and click buy it. This, too, works
better in IE since the purchase page includes a $10 for a CD of the program
which is totally unnecessary. I was able to uncheck the box using IE but
not using Firefox.

There is also a comparison chart for the three levels of protection. I
decided to go for the second level, the Internet Security for 3 computers or
gadgets because of the extra identity protection feature.

The antivirus is $19, the Internet Security is $29 and the Complete is $39
and includes 25 G of online back up.

I don't want to mislead anyone that it is totally accessible with Jaws but
it mostly is and I am pleased so far as most settings are automatic and I
don't need the really advanced stuff.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Disabling the mousepad on a Dell laptop

2015-02-14 Thread Sharon Gosling

I just used it to turn off the wireless and then turn it back on
I Just tabbed to where it says that the wireless network status is on
Then you have to tab once more to the actual button that says Turn off
wireless or Turn on wireless.. The computer makes a little ding and when I
checked it worked. Jaws reads the Windows Mobility Center perfectly. You
just have to tab to the button after the description.

I have a Dell Inspiron and it is easy to turn the mouse on and off with the
Windows Mobility Center. I would not want to use the complicated methods
since sometimes I need to turn it on to get sighted help for clicking
something that Jaws won't handle.
Anyway, the Windows Mobility Center is activated by locating the recessed
buttons above the row of F keys at the top of the laptop. On the left is
only one button, the power button. Moving to the right side the first
recessed button brings up the Windows Mobility Center. This controls many
settings but since Touchpad is the last one I use shift tab 3 times to have
it read whether the touchpad is on or off. I like to be absolutely sure I
am in the right place. Then tab once and the next button will say either
Turn off or Turn on depending. Then I just Alt F4 to close the window.
I just discovered that I could also bring up the Windows Mobility Center by
typing it into the search box in the start menu.
I do have Windows 7 but the Windows Mobility Center is a Dell thing so it
might be available in Windows 8.
Other useful items I have used in the Dell Windows mobility Center is the
ability to turn off the wireless signal and also I have changed the way the
function keys are used since the original setting had them attached to a
bunch of Dell commands that I did not use.

I would be careful trying the function key plus the key to the right of the
F12 key since on my Dell Inspiron that is the mute key. And I think
function F3 might turn off the wireless. I do use function F11 to lower
volume and function F12 to raise volume. Otherwise I feel safer using the

Re: [JAWS-Users] version 16

2015-01-20 Thread Sharon Gosling
I use the regular Amazon site all the time and with Firefox 35 it works
normally as my last order had the free shipping. Around Christmas I had a
great deal of trouble with the site as I could not change the number of
items I wanted but now that works as well. They even have the beginning of
the shopping cart finally marked with a heading so I can find it by
navigating by heading since in the past it was confusing to find the actual
items that were in the cart.
I have my Firefox set to upgrade automatically since several of the last
upgrades were for security reasons. You might want to update your Firefox
as this version seems to work fine with Jaws 16. At least as well as IE in
most cases. Now I only use IE if I have some difficulty with Firefox in
checking something or other such thing...

Just a suggestion.

I have given up trying to navigate the Amazon.com site using IE. It seems
to be easier to navigate using Firefox, but I have discovered that when
placing an order, there are no longer any radio buttons on the page for
selecting the desired shipping option,so there is now no apparent way to
select free shipping, which is not the default (standard shipping is the
default, even if your order qualifies for free shipping). So now when I
place an order with Amazon using Firefox 29 with the accessible site, I call
customer support as soon as I receive my email order confirmation to have
them adjust my order to apply free shipping instead of the default standard
shipping. This is a nuisance, but fortunately, Amazon customer support is
very helpful, especially if you explain to the agent that you are a blind
customer who is having trouble with their accessible site. Amazon is
constantly tinkering with their site, much to the detriment of us blind
customers.

Enabled, Not Available, means that it is not available to be disabled. I am
not running Vipre right now, but I did for years, and as I remember, wwhen
you open the program, you are on the scan tab, and it is either here, or in
the file menu, ALT + F, that you find the enable button or check box. Then
the first item under the Firewall tab allows you to enable or disable the
firewall by checking or unchecking a box. This is from about 8 years of

If you don't want to save the passwords, and it is not a good thing to do

Go to the tools menu. Choose Security and uncheck the box to save passwords.

Just another method that works for me.
Open the link in IE.
Use the File menu in IE to choose send.

If you want you can then rename the shortcut if necessary with F2.

I use this for lots of my most used sites.

It won't work in Firefox, however since the File menu in FF does not have

Set as default is the third choice, it will say checked if it is already the
default

Press enter

About one note. It did not show up in my printer list but it shows up all
the time in other context menus and occasionally I accidentally click on
it.. I would like to remove it completely from all menus if not from the
computer itself. When I want to make a note I open Wordpad or Notepad with
shortcut keys and type or copy my info. One note is just an extra pain.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] multiple printers and "one note"

Hi all,

Win 7 and15.0.

How do you set a particular printer as the default?

I have 2 printers in the house and when I go to print something, I have to
pick a printer.

It seems that the default is "one note".

What is One note?

When I selected the printer I wanted and scrolled through the menu and
application options, I did not see any option to make it as default printer.

I tried "devices---"and could not find the proper option either.

Thanks for your help.

2014-02-21 Thread Sharon Gosling
Just a thought about interrupted downloads...I had that problem when we
first got Brighthouse cable. The desktop on wireless would download fine
but my laptop always got interrupted and the speed was so slow it was
useless. I was paying for 25mb speed at that time.
Finally the second repair person solved the problem by putting in a
different router with a lower maximum speed. So I went back to the 10 mb
and it worked great ever since. Saved money, too, by not paying for the
extra speed.
I was ready to pull out my hair before finding a solution. Took it to the
shop and had it overhauled with no luck.
As I said, just a thought since I don't know what your specific download
interruptions are caused by but mine was in the specific router. We did
narrow it down to the router or the cable service since it downloaded
correctly in other locations.

Yes, word, outlook, excell and all MS Office applications.
If you save a document and change the default folder for that document in a
particular application then that folder remains open until you close that
application. Once that application is reopened then it will revert back to
the original default folder. The only way to change the default folder
permanantly for saving is to go to tools and options and change it there.

Rick,

It only remains the default so long as you keep that application open.
Once the application is closed and then reopened, it reverts back to the
original default location.

Hi Jorge,
In most, if not all Microsoft applications when you perform a "save as",
you have an option in that dialogue to browse for a location to save your
document.
Once you have selected a location, that usually becomes the default.
So the next time you save something in the same application,it will be in
the last location you saved something to.
It is for this reason that I save everything to one location, and then move
it later .

the f8 to highlight the table a JAWS command or just a general command in a

I managed to do it by using shift and down arrow to highlight each line

I am using Jaws 15, Win 7 and IE 10.
Use the Jaws command T to go to beginning of table.
Up arrow once and pay attention to the number of rows and columns.
Press F8 to highlight whole table.
Control C to copy table.

Paste into program of choice.

Some tables will work in an Excel spreadsheet easily if you highlight the

One of my banks works beautifully this way and I keep a spreadsheet that I

Since you said you understood the advice about the addresses, here is an
alternate process that also works to read book titles or any file name
letter by letter.

1. Navigate to the title and Jaws reads it.
2. Press the F2 key
3. Press Control A to select all.
4. Press Control C to Copy the information.
5. Press Escape to close the Renaming box.
6. Paste it into a notepad or other document where you can navigate it with
the arrow keys.

Whenever I want to go letter by letter in a file name such as a book title I
just press F2 for Rename. Then I use the arrow and home keys to navigate
through without changing anything. Then I can press Escape to leave without
saving any accidental changes. I can also use the copy feature when in the
rename field.

To read email addresses letter by letter I often copy the address and then
open Notepad or Wordpad with keyboard shortcuts and paste the address there.

Then I can go letter by letter, etc. I can close the document with or
without saving it.

To get an email address when my computer only shows me a name link I choose
forward or reply. Then I look for the addresses in the To field or in the
body of the letter in the case of a forward.
I usually just copy the pertinent addresses and then close the email without
sending it.

I am using Win 7 and Jaws 15 but used these methods with all versions of
Jaws for many years.

f2 and then press enter on add title and add your title to the layout
and if its only one, you can then press f2 once more and down arrow
to create dvd and dvd flick will start creating the dvd structure for
you and i believe it defaults to c:\dvdflick folder. creating an
audio.ts and a video_ts folder there. once dvd flick is done, you can
then simply select the video_ts folder and paste it in to your dvd

2013-12-17 Thread Sharon Gosling
I think Jaws 15 works somewhat better with IE and definitely better with
newer versions of Firefox.
I learned the hard way that it does not pay to skip an upgrade. I went from
version 4 to 7 to 9 then 11 and 13 before I bit the bullet and paid the $120
for the advance copies. I ended up having to pay for all the skipped
versions at full price and did not have the convenience of actually using
them. So this time when 15 which was the last one I had prepaid for arrived
and I went ahead and paid the $120 for the SMA of 16 and 17. I am not sure
what the deadline is but it is sometime in Dec. to pay for the next two
versions.

It works better with windows 8, but you are also getting other bug fixes.
I'd never buy an old version, Unless you plan on regaining your sight. You
will probably need to upgrade eventually when your computer dies or
whatever, starting with an old version costs you money at upgrade time.

When you use the Insert V to go to the Quick settings you land in a search

something like tagged, all, or none. Pressing spacebar on this rotates

spacebar to all. Then tab three times to OK and press enter.

arrow to expand the list and left arrow to collapse the list again.
It might take a little getting used to but I really like having all my
threads kept together.

If anyone knows how to get to the graphics in WLM with Jaws 15 to label them
I would love to know. I tried all the ways I could think of but couldn't
get the cursor on the actual graphic I needed to label. I used the
directions from the Windows Live Mail 2011 Guide but it did not work in
Jaws 15. Then I tried everything else I could think of but had no luck.

Hi all,
I have Win7 and 15.0 with WLM.
I couldn’t figure out why I would open a message and after hitting the
escape key, I would still hear”unread” message.
So, I hit the right arrow key and arrowed down and found a bunch of new
messages.
I never got any announcement that messages were collapsed. Who knows how
many messages I deleted.

Is there a way to get an announcement if messages are collapsed in WLM?
And, after opening all of the messages that now have been expanded how do
you collapse them again?

Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Collapsed messages in WLM

2013-12-10 Thread Sharon Gosling
In Jaws 14 and WLM 2011 I was able to label the graphics for collapsed and
expanded and then have it read labeled graphics. In Jaws 15 I cannot label
the graphics because I can't get the cursor to go to them like I did in 14.
But if you turn Read all graphics on in the quick settings (Insert V) then
it will give you the numbered graphics. I am getting used to figuring out
which number is which. The graphics are as follows in WLM 11.

249 Collapsed
304 Expanded
294 Read
656 Unread
160 Attachment

I went to the website you indicated and used Firefox (the next to last

the arrow down key to move down..

I could not do anything with IE11.
I am using Jaws 15 on a Win 7 laptop.
I could not try the Application plus enter since my Dell laptop does not

did nothing when I managed to press them with the enter key (which was a

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows Live Mail

2013-12-05 Thread Sharon Gosling
I find that when certain keystrokes don't work in WLM I Use the alt spacebar
and then x to maximize the page and things work again most of the time.
Don't know why the window does not stay maximized.
The biggest change I have noticed with Jaws 15 and WLM is that the labeled
graphics like attachment, expanded, etc. don't work. I am unable to label
them in Jaws 15 because I can't navigate to the graphics anymore. I have
tried many various ways, Jaws cursor, mouse cursor, virtual cursor off, and
everything else I could think of but could not navigate to the graphics to
label them.

So now I have just memorized the numbers.
656 is unread
294 is read
249 is collapsed
304 is expanded
160 is attachment
661 is also some kind of attachment, I think
I have deduced these from much trial and error.

I did not update the settings from Jaws 14 because I had 14 screwed up with
a different voice for the say all and the spell rate was way too fast so I
just like the basic defaults in the Jaws 15. Guess I am set in my ways but
I like my old Jaws buddy's voice. We have spent over 11 years together and I
like him.

[JAWS-Users] Firefox much better with Jaws 15

2013-11-30 Thread Sharon Gosling

Just thought I would let people know that Firefox is working well with Jaws 15.
If you have been wanting to try Firefox or upgrade it now is the time to go
for it.
I had upgraded to the latest Firefox when I still had Jaws 14 and it very
frequently would freeze and only read the title of the page. It would not
close or allow any interaction. I had to restart the computer to use Firefox
again. Also, the videos on Dr. Oz’s website caused it to freeze and they would
not play although they worked fine with IE.
Now, with Jaws 15 Firefox is working pretty well and the Oz videos play. I
feel better about the security of my surfing with an updated version of
Firefox. Previously I had used Firefox 15 since it worked better with earlier
versions of Jaws. Just a note, I had to manually update the Good old favorites
plugin so I could used synchronized favorites with IE and Firefox. Very
convenient since any favorite is immediately available in both programs.
I am trying to use Firefox for most Internet surfing because IE still has
security issues. In fact, windows itself still has some major unpatched flaws.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Win7 Power Options with JFW

2013-11-30 Thread Sharon Gosling
I have my laptop set to sleep after 15 minutes now because when I had it set
to never I found that the fan ran all the time and the laptop ran very hot.
It seems much better to let it cool off. Now with Jaws 15 the sleep does
not cause a problem on reawakening. Previously when waking up the control
or alt key would be activated so that if I pressed control and a key Jaws
would say alt control and the key. I did find that as a work around if I
opened a new document in notepad and closed it that the keys went back to
normal. Go figure.
This has only happened once since I upgraded. I haven't tried hibernation
with Jaws 15 because it never worked previously in any way and sleep is good
enough.

Hi Cher,
Those particular settings on a laptop are aimed mostly at conserving battery
power, how much wear and tear they save on hardware is arguable.
If you set everything to "never" just realize that if you are running on
battery, and not at the computer, there is no real conservation of power You
can extend the battery life somewhat by removing it while running on AC.
Note: this may not work on all laptops.
I have everything set to "never" on all of my machines, because I don't want
to experience unexpected behavior because I forgot about a minor setting.

So far as JAWS is concerned power management is not an issue. It is the
operation of your computer like waking it up ETC that is the problem.

I always turn that hibernation stuff off myself. The hard drive is personal

Re: [JAWS-Users] Firefox, which version

2013-11-21 Thread Sharon Gosling

I have what I assume is the latest version of Firefox and find that it
frequently freezes and Jaws 14 only reads the title of the page. I can't
get to the menus or to any portion of the page. About the latest version of
Firefox that this did not happen with is 15 or 16. But supposedly older
versions of browsers are not secure. So, I, too, would like some
information about using the current version of Firefox. When it works most
of the same key shortcuts as IE work except that I can't get to a back
button and the alt left arrow does not seem to do anything.
When it "freezes" the program will not close and I have to restart the
computer to get rid of the page.

You have to label the appropriate graphic to announce it. It has been a
while since I labeled them but basically you do the Insert V and have jaws
announce all graphics.
Then the tricky part is figuring out which graphic is which...for example
collapsed, expanded, attachment, etc. I sent myself various test emails
until I was fairly confident which graphic was which and then used the Jaws
graphic labeler to name them. Then set Jaws back to reading only labeled
graphics.

[JAWS-Users] Banking security with IE was Re: IE 10 or 11

2013-11-19 Thread Sharon Gosling
The only reason I upgrade browsers is the hope that new ones will be more
secure. But I do leave IE9 on the Win 7 desktop because it is easier to
use. Even if your old XP machine works the best with your bank I would be
very hesitant to use it for banking. Evidently XP gets a lot more security
problems and after April it will be obsolete. I have retired mine except to
keep backups on.
I like IE 9 for my bank since I can copy the whole table of transactions and
copy it directly into an Excel spreadsheet. I have done this for years.
With IE 10 and with Firefox the table will not copy in regular table format.
It copies each cell as a long vertical list which does no good with my
Excel spreadsheet.
As for upgrading Jaws, I do this only in the hope that navigating the
Internet will get better. Lately with Jaws 14 I have found many websites
that most links work and then I fill in lots of information and the submit
link or some other important one will not respond to any key combinations.
So I guess I will go ahead and install my Jaws 15 today and hope for the
best.
Just a thought...Kim Komando, the digital goddess, has mentioned in many
recent newsletters that there is a security flaw in windows which has not
been patched yet. For this reason I have been checking my bank info on my
iPhone.

I also plan to purchase the identity theft protection very soon.

All my bills are setup through my bank's bill pay, this is crucial for me

I have been lazy here too, I have jaws 13 on my window's 7 laptop, 14 and

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Saving Favorites in IE

Hi Everyone,

My computer is about to head into the repair shop and may need to be
replaced.
I would like to save a list of my favorites in IE but can't remember how to
do it.

If someone can tell me how to save favorites I would much appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

2013-10-30 Thread Sharon Gosling
I haven't installed 15 yet but am using IE 10 with 14. When the alt left
arrow doesn't work it is quick to use alt v, then g and then enter. Alt view
is the view menu, g is shortcut for Go to and the default is Back. Once you
get used to it, it makes a quick work around.

Still sometimes have the same issue with Alt-left arrow not changing to the
previous page. When It refuses to back up, closing the page with Control-W
closes IE altogether. Are there any settings changes that need to be made to
eliminate this issue? Are others experiencing this also?

[JAWS-Users] Mousepad troubles with Jaws

2013-07-29 Thread Sharon Gosling
I recently had to bite the bullet and take my computer to be repaired. The
mousepad was turned off when I took it.
Now that I have it back the mouse is turned on and will not turn off. I looked
up the specific command for my Dell inspiron 15-r and it was Function key plus
F3. It said an orange light would come above the mousepad when it was turned
off.
This does not work.
There is also a flat “button above the F key row that brings up the Windows
Mobility Center that has lots of settings. This is where I always turned the
mousepad on and off previously. Now it says the mousepad is off and when I
press the “Turn On” button nothing changes. But the mouse is not off.
The reason this is a problem is that Jaws constantly loses focus on whichever
window I am trying to use. Mostly it flips back to the desktop. I am being
scrupulously careful to keep my hands well elevated above the mousepad but it
still flips off the window I have focus on. And it does it very frequently,
usually in less than a minute. My husband is tired of listening to me yell at
the computer so I thought I would write and see if this is a Jaws problem.
Several years ago on a different laptop I accidentally had the mousepad on and
had this loss of focus problem which disappeared when I turned the mousepad off.
But what is different this time is that I am definitely not touching the
mousepad when it jumps although it could be mostly when I am typing.
Any suggestions to help resolve the problem will be appreciated.

[JAWS-Users] Problems with new Jaws, IE 10, Windows Update

2013-05-19 Thread Sharon Gosling
I have a strange problem. I was away a week ago and using a secure network at
the vacation rental I stayed in. When I turned on my computer Internet
Explorer was gone. It was not in the Start list or in the All Programs portion
of the start menu.
I searched and found an Internet Explorer in both programs folders under the C
drive. I was able to open IE by clicking on iexplore.exe in the Internet
Explorer folder.
I put shortcuts to this in the Start menu. Mostly I use Firefox, though.

Well, today I had a weird experience. I was downloading from BARD and no
downloads would complete and what started to download was incredibly slow. I
had also upgraded to the new version of Jaws a few days ago. So I had Win 7 64
bit, IE 10, Firefox 21 and latest Jaws. Could not download from NLS at all
with either browser. I followed the steps and downloads started and then later
it would say download interrupted.

So I went to the other computer running Win 7 32 bit and IE 9. Book after book
downloaded in a matter of seconds each. Very fast. No problems.

So I rolled back Firefox to version 15 which had worked pretty well before.
Still did not complete a book download using new Jaws. So I put Jaws 13 back
on and got
a complete download in a reasonable amount of time.

Still can’t get IE10 to download a whole book. It did download a podcast,
however.

I went to Windows Update to roll back the IE 10 to IE 9 by uninstalling the IE
10 update but there was no IE 10 update installed. There was one in the
updates needing installation. But it won’t install. I keep getting Code 9c48
whatever that is, every time I try to install the IE 10 update. Went to
Microsoft support and help and still can’t figure out how IE 10 got on my
computer and how to get it off!!!
So I am back to using Firefox 15 as default browser and occasionally the IE 10
that is on the computer if FF doesn’t work.
Any geeks out there, I would be eternally grateful for help. And I am curious
to know if anyone else has had problems downloading when using the new Jaws.

[JAWS-Users] View on screen not follow Jaws PC cursor

2013-04-21 Thread Sharon Gosling
Sometimes when I can’t get Jaws to click an element I ask my sighted husband to
click it with the regular mouse pad. It often seems that the portion of the
webpage visible on the computer screen does not follow the Jaws PC cursor. The
problem is that when I find the location with Jaws he says the words are not on
the screen. Shouldn’t there be a visible cursor showing where the Jaws focus
is on the screen?
Granted, my husband has vision but no computer skills so he can’t locate the
spot I want him to click without much guidance from me. Since I can’t see the
screen at all I don’t know if there is a cursor there or not.
Would it affect Jaws if I tried to make the mouse pointer bigger or something,
if it is really onscreen at all.

Is there some kind of Jaws page formatting that would make the page appear in
the way sighted people see it?

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws cursor not following PC cursor

2013-04-21 Thread Sharon Gosling
Why don't you just change Firefox to the default browser, at least
temporarily, so the email will open in Firefox. I have done that. I have
also opened a link in one browser, copied the url onto the clipboard and
then opened the other browser and inserted the url.
I find that in most cases Firefox is the most useful for many websites but
occasionally IE will do a better job.
I don't have any advice about the Jaws cursor as I am finding it next to
useless for anything on the Internet lately with either browser.

Sorry, I didn't do a very good job describing the problem. The site is
www.gardeners.com. I'm trying to add items to the shopping cart. All the
links work except add to cart, which Jaws doesn't recognize as a link in
either IE or Firefox. In Firefox, though, if I hit enter, the item ends up
in the shopping cart. Normally that would solve the problem, but there is a
20% off deal for this site, when clicking through the email containing the
deal. My email links open in IE, so if I order through FF, I won't get the
discount. What I want to do with the Jaws cursor is simulate a mouse click.
I've done that often before when Jaws keystrokes won't work on various
sites. But now when I route Jaws to PC, there's no add to cart text to click
on. I don't believe flash is the issue this time. Thanks,

First, where (on what site or type os site: is it Flash?) is this
control JAWS doesn't recognize that you need to click? Have you tried it
with the virtual cursor off - JAWSKey+z? That is a toggle.

If you press ctrl+JAWSKey+NumPadMinus, you normally want to hear, "the
JAWS cursor will not follow the PC cursor". That is also a toggle. Press
it twice within a second to save your desired setting.

(It's too confusing to have the JAWS cursor following the PC cursor all
the time: Plus, the PC cursor then doesn't move properly because it is
being restricted by the JAWS cursor.

Hi All,

When I route the Jaws cursor to the PC cursor, I'm not in the same
place as I was with the PC cursor. I need to route the Jaws cursor to
the PC to click a control Jaws 13 isn't recognizing with either IE or
Firefox. When I route the Jaws cursor, it either switches me to
another open program, or it just reads a small amount of text no
matter whether the cursor is in real, focus, unrestricted, etc. I
guess somehow the 2 cursors have become unattached. Can someone please
tell me how to get them back together?

Thank you,

Re: [JAWS-Users] How do I prevent Firefox from automatically upgrading

2013-03-01 Thread Sharon Gosling
I was able to reinstall the regular version of FF 15 I had on my computer
and followed the directions to prevent updates. It seems to have worked.
15 just installed over 19.
I did go to the site to download the portable version of Firefox and
downloaded version portable 15 and portable 16. But when I clicked on them
it went to an upload/download page which said version 19 would be installed.
So I am glad I was able to put the regular version 15 on. Now to see if it
works and doesn't freeze.
But I do think Jaws should work on keeping the compatibility with upgrades
of IE 9 and Firefox for security reasons.

Heyya Sherrie:
To prevent Firefox from updating. Open firefox, on the tools menu find,
options, once you do & open it, you're presented with a list box, use your
up & down arrows until you find advanced, tab down once & find a page which
says general. Control tab until you find the update tab, once found, tab
once & find the 3 radiobutton choices which are, audomaticly check for &
install updates, check for updates but ask me what to do & do nothing, make
your choice & tab until you find the ok button. As far as how many versions
you can have & run on your system, I'm not the answerman for that perhaps
someone else can help you.

Since Firefox 19 constantly freezes using my Win 7 64 bit Dell laptop with
Jaws 14 I reinstalled Firefox 15 which was the original version I had
installed. I checked and it said Firefox 15. I went through all the
options and could not find any that mentioned automatic upgrades.
But when I opened Firefox the next time it just said “Upgrading” and it
went back to 19. No choice offered at all.

So how do I make it stay at version 15?
I really need it for at least 6 websites that I frequently use.
When Firefox freezes it won’t quit with any keystrokes including Alt
control escape or alt control delete or alt F4 or anything else.

I have to restart the computer and that is a royal pain.
I was advised in a previous message that one could have several different
versions of Firefox on the computerat the same time.
When I installed Firefox 15 after having Firefox 19 already on the
computer it replaced the version 19. I went to the control panel remove
programs and checked the list to see which versions showed up and it only
showed version 15 so I assumed it had replaced the version 19.

But the first time I tried using it after that it went back to 19.
Help, please.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Firefox freezing with Jaws 14

2013-02-24 Thread Sharon Gosling

I would very much like the link to the Firefox 16.
As to the statement made that there is not much difference between
accessibility with IE 9 and FF I have found many. Just the other day I tried
to sign up for the free samples on doctoroz.com and there was no space to
fill in any info with IE 9 but when I copied the link and opened it in FF
the form fields were there and I was able to sign up. Expressscripts.com is
another that I could not sign in on IE 9. Also the FIOS website, the
Lookout.com and I think certain pages of the Bank of America site. Those
are just the ones I remember having problems with recently using IE 9 that
were accessible with FF..
Mostly I don't compare page by page unless I know ahead of time that there
is something that is supposed to be there and isn't on IE 9.
I would think that Jaws should put more effort into making IE more
accessible or at least fix this freezing problem with Firefox.
As for using version 3.5 of Firefox. it seems to me that that would really
be a security risk rather like using IE 6 or 7.
I really would like to switch to Firefox for my default. Maybe the version
16 would work with Jaws 14.

Thanks,
Sherrie

First of all, no need to reboot your computer when firefox crashes. Hit
ctrl-alt-escape, find the firefox in applications, hit the
applications/context key on it and choose end task.

Second of all, having used both firefox and ie9, I'd say that ie9 gives
more information on webpages where there is any difference at all. I
have yet to find one that is more accessible with firefox. If you are
having a lot of crashes with firefox as your default browser, caused by
clicking on links, you might want to change to ie as the default. You
can download ff17.x off of mozilla's ftp site, you have to dig for it
though. If it weren't for a couple of plugins that allow me to block
ads and control what javascript I wish to allow, along with how it deals
with rss, I'd use internet explorer instead of firefox. I've used
firefox for many years, so I don't say that lightly. I have yet to try
the release version of ff19, but the beta crashed just like ff18 did.

2013-02-14 Thread Sharon Gosling
I have noticed that links won't open a lot recently and I am using IE 9 and
Jaws 14 with Win 7 laptop.
Mostly I notice this in conjunction with entering information to sign into a
website or sign up or whatever. For 5 different websites recently I have
had to go to Firefox to sign in. I was planning to just switch to Firefox
totally but then Jaws started getting hung up and not letting me close the
Firefox program. Using latest update of Jaws 14 and don't really know
which to make my default browser. I wish I could make links on my desktop
to open certain links in Firefox but it just uses the default browser.
But in general with at least 5 websites I have to go to Firefox to sign in
or sign up. Among these are my Bank of America and Publix digital coupons
as well as Lookout mobile security.

Also aggravated with IE 9 because it keeps wanting me to update add ones and
I don't want to-I just want that nagging to go away.

JAWS seems to have a focus issue with older browsers. Here at work, we

I find that jaws14 has a hard time focusing on links. Jaws reports that
I am on a link but will not activate it. As a work around I bring up
the links list, it usually presents me with the link I am trying to
activate and I choose move to link. This way I can just press enter on
the link or use the application key to open the page in a new window.
You can give it a try to see if that might be the problem or you might

configured in some way to where Jaws can't line up with the link and
open? I can switch to another version to see if the problem persists
but wanted to ask first if anyone has seen kind of a frequent thing with
websites where links just won't open. And it's not the whole site, just
to be clear. It's just certain links on the sites, which leads me to
believe there's something about the link itself that makes it impossible
to open. Do I have to put it back to mouse-over setting in HTML? I
have it not to speak that but should it be put back, as some links have
something to do with something mouse-over related? Which I don't really
know the meaning of but just puzzled about this whole thing.

Hope someone can help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] follow up to dell touchpad

2012-12-25 Thread Sharon Gosling
On my Dell laptop there is a flat "button" in the part of the keyboard above
the F keys. It brings up the Windows Mobility Center. I Shift twice to get
to the button to turn the mousepad on or off. The first shift tab takes me
to a Help button and the second is the touchpad which is the last in the
list of controls.
Alt F4 shuts the Windows mobility center or you can press the flat button at
the top again. The button to open it is the first flat one on the right
side at the top of the keyboard.
I would prefer a way to use just the Function and F5 key, though. So far
the only special key combinations I use are the Function key with the F11,
F12, and F13 to lower, raise or mute the volume.

hello Charles;
I assume your using windows 7, and, I'm also assuming your using synaptics
mousepad drivers,
try the following;
Try typing,
Mouse in the start menu edit box,
Now enter on the first entry,
Which is simply mouse,
Now shift+tab=buttons tab,
Now right arrow until you hear;
Device tab,
Now tab and make your changes,
you should hear something like, disable button,

And then tab okay enter.

Hi There,

Could you please be a little more specific as to what you downloaded and
from where? I have the same issue, with the touchpad driving me crazy as it
gets in the way when I am typing. A means of using FN F5 to switch it on and
off would be great, as I have sighted family who use my DELL 1537 laptop

Merry Christmas to all on the list.

Here is what I did for others that eliminated the problem for them
1. In Windows Explorer, go to the tools menu, and then Folder Options.
2. Control Tab to the View tab, and then tab to the tree-view of settings.
3. Press the letter S, until Jaws says:
show preview handlers in the preview Payne.
4. More than likely, this is checked, press the spacebar to uncheck it.
5. Tab to the apply button, spacebar that, then tab to okay, and spacebar
that to close the dialogue.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws 14 not reading whole email in WLM 2011;

2012-11-02 Thread Sharon Gosling
Hi,
Using Jaws 14, Win 7, WLM 2011.
With Jaws 13 when I press enter on an email it opens and Jaws reads it all.
With Jaws 14 it reads the first line or maybe paragraph. But I have have to
use the insert down arrow to hear the entire email.
Also, when I have an email open and use control D to delete it a new one opens
but doesn’t read at all.

I just tested it out by switching back to Jaws 13 briefly.
Does this happen to everyone or am I doing something wrong?
I checked the settings and Read automatically is checked.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 14 vocalizer-need capital announcement instructions

2012-10-28 Thread Sharon Gosling
Thank you so much for these great directions. However, I had muddled
through on my own before finding these. I ended up with having the capital
letters being accompanied by the piano middle c sound. Actually I like it
pretty well.

I am saving your directions for future reference.
But I think Freedom Scientific should at least offer a ready made sound
scheme to deal with capital letters.
I am enjoying having my Tom-Jill combo do the talking. I am already used to
them and when I switched back to Eloquence I did not like it half so much.

Hello Sharon,

Here are steps for setting JAWS to say cap before capitalized words. These
changes are for the scheme being used by the active application. To make
default changes for all applications you will need to use CTRL+Shift+D after
step 1 and make other appropriate changes as needed. Changes you make when
using the default option will not change the Microsoft Word usage as
Microsoft Word uses a different scheme. These steps will make the changes
for Microsoft Word if you start in that application.

1. Press JAWS key with 6 to launch the settings center.
2. In the search box type "speech and sound" (without quotes) and use
down arrow key to the second result, which is for the active scheme.
3. Press enter key.
4. Use down arrow key twice and press spacebar on the Modify option.
5. Use tab key to the button for editing the scheme and press spacebar.

6. Use CTRL+Shift+Tab to move to the last page tab in the dialog box,
which is the miscellaneous page tab.
7. In the list of items that can be changed use down arrow key to the
second item.
8. Use tab key to the group of radio buttons that let you change the
way capital letters are spoken.
9. Use up arrow key one time to the Speak Item radio button to select
it.
10. Use tab key to the edit box and type the word Cap in the edit box.
11. Use shift+tab three times and listen to the entry for behavior in
the list box. It should now include "speak item using normal voice and say
cap.
12. Use tab key to the OK button and press spacebar.
13. Use tab key to the Save selected scheme" button and press spacebar.
14. Use tab key to the OK button and press spacebar. Do the same in
each subsequent dialog box until the Settings Center is closed.
15. Use JAWS key with 6 to bring the Settings Center back up.
16. Type in the word "cap" without the quotes.
17. Use down arrow key to the first item, which sets the level of
indication. Use spacebar to select the level of indication you want.
18. Use down arrow key to the checkbox that lets you apply the change to
SayAll. If you want to include SayAll then use spacebar on that checkbox.
19. Use tab key to the Apply button and use spacebar.
20. Use tab key to the OK button and use spacebar to accept changes and
leave the Settings Center.

Take care.

I have literally spent a couple of hours trying to find the right place to
follow the directions to make the capital letters preceded by the word cap.
I listened to the Daisy training book, then I went over the parts of it in
print and it says to use insert F2 and then choose configuration manager.
But in Jaws 14, at least the one I am using, there is no configuration
manager listed. So then I went through every single aspect of all the Jaws
menus and could not find configuration manager or sound manager or anything
except Voice adjustment. I chose voices and set up a profile but can't find
any place to do anything about caps.
I generally consider myself good at following directions but it is really
frustrating when the very first instruction is impossible to follow.
I also went through the help topics and could find nothing about
configuration manager. I assume that the Daisy book is from a previous
version of Jaws but I want to use it for Jaws 14.

You said this solved your problem with the caps announcement. Could you
please give me some written directions for reaching the proper place to make
the changes.
Actually, I think Jaws 14 should have having the caps spoken as one of the
regular choices like they used to when you could adjust the amount of pitch
change for capitals. Surely most people want to know capital letters for
editing purposes.
Any help would be appreciated.

The Vocalizer voices, just like the RealSpeak Solo Direct voices are
incapable of indicating capitalization using a raised pitch. Instead, you
will need to have capital letters preceded with "Cap". This has to be
accomplished using the JAWS Speech and Sound Scheme settings.
Freedom Scientific has a DAISY Training Book, which uses this specific

I really prefer the regular FB page to the mobile. Now with Jaws 13 and IE9
I can use the h navigation or the number 5 for headings and go down my
status newsfeed very easily. And now it keeps going for lots and lots of
statuses. Before it would only let me go through about 10 or so and I could
not get it to go to the next page.

To navigate on the mobile page I always used the n key since there are no
headings. Then I could read the status but not who it was from. And the
pages are short so I had to find the More Stories button to go to the next
page over and over.
On the regular site it just keeps scrolling and scrolling now and I can keep
reading until I get to where they start repeating ones I have already read.
Am I the only one who likes the regular FB site better?

I find it easier to use the nicknames. I have assigned one word nicknames
to my main contacts so when I want to send an email I just type in the
nicknames such as sister, aunt, susie, lgh or whatever. I just have to
separate them with commas. When I tab away and back to the BCC or TO field
the whole name and address is there. The main aggravation is that Jaws
won't let me go back and fix a misspelled nickname.

But it works well and much easier than searching through the contacts list.

the first one, and if I want the second one for example, I have a debbie, a
dawn, and a dalphinlilly, and I want to write to dalphinlilly I should be
able to type in d, and arrow down. but here just the first letter comes up!
so how do I turn it on? salso how do you get Jaws to read the incoming name,
it just reads the subject, my friend has been asking that question for weeks
with know answer! thanks so much sue

Hi Sue

I use jaws 13 with live mail.

when I write an email, I start the way you do,

control N for new email.

then rather than shift tab to get to the contact list, enter the first
letter of the name you want, such as E for elaine. as you are already in the
address field.

then if you shift tab, then tab again, basically you are going back then
forward again to the email address edit field, you will see an address
there. for some reasons jaws doesn't see the address unless you do that.

I think it depends on how you have live mail set up, for example, i've
turned off quite a lot of things within the settings. it makes live mail
more like windows mail. at first I hated live mail but now it's working as
as I like it.

once you have found the email address you wanted, then you can tab over to
the other fields.

personally I wouldn't bother with going to the contact list unless you have
too. this way works for me and I hope it is helpful to you.

if you need any further help, dont hesitate to contact me.

hugs

Elaine

Subject: [JAWS-Users] windos live mail headache please help?

Hi, I am so not liking windows live mail I cant wait until my out look gets
fixed.
I am stumped as to what I am doing wrong in putting a contact into the too
line.

I am not great with remembering email address so I would like to psend
messages via contact list, and here is what I am doing.
1. ctrl N for new message.
2. shift tab to contact list.
3. chose a contact, and hit enter.
4 tab to ok, and tab down to subject, fill it in.5. write my message.
6. ctrl s for send.
So what am I missing? when sI send it, jaws tells me to place an address
into the too, ccb, or bcc. so where am I going wrong?
Sue

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and Internet Explorer 9

2012-08-30 Thread Sharon Gosling
How can one tell which IE 9 was loaded. If the laptop is a Win 7 64 bit
wouldn't it automatically use the 64 bit one?
I am having this blank blank problem with Jaws 11, Win 7 and IE 9. I also
have the same problem on a 32 bit computer running Vista and Jaws 11.
I have used the letter n navigation but it is not guaranteed that it won't
skip over something I am searching for so occasionally line by line is a
necessity and this is extremely aggravating to listen to the blank blank
over and over.

Does this happen with Jaws 13 and IE 9 when navigating line by line?
Thanks in advance,
Sherrie Gosling

Hi Jolyn,

I don't know that I can be of much help here, but so others can
help, which version of the win7 operating system are you running
32-bit or 64-bit? If this is a 64-bit machine, which version of
IE 9 did you load? My experience has been that 64-bit IE 9
doesn't work all that well. I have had no problems with 32-bit IE
9 on my 64-bit machines.

Re: [JAWS-Users] video format converter

2012-08-22 Thread Sharon Gosling
I am pretty sure I used one called Prism to convert avi videos to mp4's a
while back. It is by the same company that makes Switch audio converter. I
have a new laptop so it is not on this one yet. I did a Google search for
Prism video converter and came up with lots of info.

For example
http://www.nchsoftware.com/prism/kb/1217.html
tells you all the different formats and also has a download link.
At least the basic form is free, I am pretty sure.

with her.
But I need a video format converter that I can work with.So far I've tried
windows movy maker and Any video Converter.
But, they haven't gone too well.

[JAWS-Users] Is anyone using Carbonite with Win 7?

2012-08-12 Thread Sharon Gosling
I would like to use the Carbonite or similar program on my Win 7 laptop. I have
Jaws 11 but will consider upgrading to 13 if it works with this program.
I did listen to the tutorial that was recommended but it was done on an XP
machine and not with a current version of Carbonite, I think, since the price
at that time was $44 and now it is $59.
So what worked on the tutorial was not the way it showed up on my computer.
Mainly I need to know how to tell what it actually backs up and how to tell it
to include something in the backup. The context menu says an item that says
not to back up an item but not one to include an item in the backup. My free
trial is expired now but I will purchase the program if it works on Windows 7
with the current version of Carbonite.
So please, is anyone using this successfully now?
Thanks in advance,
Sherrie Gosling

[JAWS-Users] graphics question with Internet Explorer

2012-02-07 Thread Sharon Gosling
I am using Windows 7, Jaws 11, and IE 9. I want the Jaws settings to show all
graphics not tagged graphics when I open a website. Every page I open that I
need a specific graphic to show I have to go in and change the setting from
tagged graphics to show all graphics.
I think it is the configuration manager that I need to set it for all my
Internet Explorer pages but I am having a very hard time with this. I went to
the default jaws settings in configuration manager and the choice for graphics
is show all. I opened the Internet explorer.jcf configuration and it was
already set to show all graphics. I did the save on that screen anyway but
every page I open in Internet Explorer shows the graphics back to tagged only.
I am beginning to think I should just go back to IE 8 although I was really
excited when I actually got a Doctor Oz video to play the other day and then
got one to play this morning. But I can't replicate what I did except that the
link to start the video is a long string of letters and such that only shows up
once in a while. I have spent hours and hours trying to figure out exact steps
to play the videos. Very frustrating as I am really a Doctor Oz fan. If anyone
knows how to make them play, I would love to know. The website is
www.doctoroz.com.
I also need more graphics to show up on my Facebook page and on some other
sites.
So how do I make I E 9 remember to show all graphics and not tagged graphics.
Thanks,
Sherrie Gosling

Re: [JAWS-Users] when you have two versions of jaws on your computer, how do you keep one from starting first?

2011-09-17 Thread Sharon Gosling
I was having a problem with this since I have Jaws 11 and installed Jaws 13.
I can tell which one is on by the speed of the speech since I have speeded
up Jaws 11 quite a bit. Anyway whenever I went to the Jaws 13 shortcut on
my desktop all it showed me was the Options tree for Jaws 11. So the help
shown was also the one for Jaws 11. I tried going to the All programs list
and went to Jaws 13 and then the Jaws choice and got the same thing.
To solve the problem I added a k in front of the name Jaws 13 on the
desktop. Then I can go to it with the keystroke k. At that point I used
Insert F4 to quit Jaws 11 and pressed enter on the jaws 13 icon on the
desktop. Jaws 13 opened and I had to choose to use it in demo mode.
Then I could change settings for Jaws 13. Since I have to use the demo mode
I choose to have my Jaws 11 at startup and to open Jaws 13 when I want to
try it on special things.
When my 40 minutes run out I can quit Jaws 13 and then use my hot keys Alt
control J to open Jaws 11 again.
So I assume that if you are actively running a former version of Jaws then
you can't start or access Jaws 13 until you exit the earlier version. But I
could be wrong but this works for me.

Just for the record I am running Jaws 11 on a 64 bit Windows 7 laptop.

Hi All,

I now have jaws 12 and13 on my computer. I want 13 to start, not 12. I
went
into basic options on 12, and unchecked everything in the placed that
gives
you choices to check or uncheck how jaws starts. When I went to jaws 13,
the

same boxes that I unchecked in 12, were also unchecked in jaws 13. I
rechecked them in 13, and they appear the same in 12 also. How do I keep
12
from starting? I'm running windows 7 home premium jaws 13 beta release on
a

64 bit machine. Jim

Okay, listers, this is the one you've all been waiting for.
In FSCast 58, Jonathan Mosen discusses the new features of
JAWS 13 with Eric Damery and Dan Clark. The public beta is
scheduled for release during the second week of September,
so it should be out shortly. Very interesting.
