[JAWS-Users] Windows Live Mail
I am running Windows 7, Jaws 15 latest release and Windows Live Mail. Recently, when I press Alt to enter the menus or Ribbon, it now says “blank” and none of my keystrokes I normally would use work. Everything looks normal on the screen according to a sighted person. Has anybody else experienced this? Is there a fix? Did I miss some new way of operating in Windows 15? It is good to know this. But, for this issue, it did not work. Don't know why the window does not stay maximized. The biggest change I have noticed with Jaws 15 and WLM is that the labeled graphics like attachment, expanded, etc. don't work. I am unable to label them in Jaws 15 because I can't navigate to the graphics anymore. I have tried many various ways, Jaws cursor, mouse cursor, virtual cursor off, and everything else I could think of but could not navigate to the graphics to label them. So now I have just memorized the numbers. 656 is unread 294 is read 249 is collapsed 304 is expanded 160 is attachment 661 is also some kind of attachment, I think I have deduced these from much trial and error. I did not update the settings from Jaws 14 because I had 14 screwed up with a different voice for the say all and the spell rate was way too fast so I just like the basic defaults in the Jaws 15. Guess I am set in my ways but I like my old Jaws buddy's voice. We have spent over 11 years together and I like him. Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows Live Mail
I don't have Word so can't check that. But, I unchecked Ribbons and it sort of works. I still can't do things like Move won't list the folders just says folder tree container. But, this tells Me that something is broken in Freedom Scientific's code that is supposed to lock the Ribbon items in place. Thanks for the help even if it didn't completely solve the issue. Does this occur in other applications such as Word? It did to me. So, Being in WLM I went to the Jaws quick settings insert + v and unchecked the virtual ribbons. Yes, and it worked. I did the same in Word where the problem existed as well. My idea is that perhaps because the virtual ribbons were checked in Jaws 14 you have to uncheck int in 15. I found that this unchecking also worked in other situations, like in Jaws starting automaticaly when loged on. I hope this helps. If you can afford 3tb, you need 3tb lol. Remember when computers were really something if they had 128K of memory? Now, you couldn't even turn the thing on with that small a memory. Programs just get bigger and the things we use computers for just get more complex. So, use your own judgment. Whatever you buy, you will fill it up with priceless stuff you can't bear to lose. What that means I think is that if you buy a however many terrabyte external drive, you plug it into a usb port and the computer and your external drive do what is needed for them to talk to each other without you having to do anything like run some program. Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about using Mail Clients with JAWS
Windows Live Mail does work with the versions of Jaws you mentioned. It is true that you have to do things a little differently, but it can be done. I am not good at giving technical directions so someone else may explain better. First, in Settings, set Ribbons so that they are controlled by Jaws. Actually, I have been searching since long ago for a kind of mail client that can be used well with JAWS. I have been using Outlook Express in Win98 and then in WinXP since 12 years ago. Now I am dismayed to find this client missing its place in Windows 7. I have tried lots of various mail clients to find an alternative, but all in vain. Windows Live Mail is not well compatible with JAWS 10, 11 or 13. I have not tried it with JAWS 14. About Mozilla Thunderbird , I didn't know which version to use, but its latest version was not compatible with JAWS either. I have tried various other clients too, but none of them was good. This is the main reason I am still working with WinXP as my main OS rather than Win7. Please tell me which mail client is best compatible with JAWS? Tell me the exact version of the main client and JAWS please. When composing a message with Control N, I can also tab to the send button after I have written a message. Re: [JAWS-Users] what is the name of an accessible and compatiblemedical transcription computer program with jaws
Jacques, Have you contacted Freedom Scientific about this question? This might be a good place to start since they may know of a program that works well or even one that will not. The bigger issue is going to be what do employers use or if you are going to set up your own practice, what format you will be able to get material in for transcription and which formats are required by doctors. It won't help you at all if the program works with Jaws but is not compatible with your market. Now that medical records are moving to digital files, compatibility is very important. If you plan to make paper copies, I suspect you are looking at a dead end career with a somewhat short lifespan. Some documents will always need paper copies but even then, doctors will want that digital file for the patient record. -Original Message- From: Jacques Pilon Sent: Monday, April 23, 2012 9:48 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] what is the name of an accessible and compatiblemedical transcription computer program with jaws Hello listers, I am looking for an accessible medical transcription computer program that can be used with jaws; does anyone know of such a program. Re: [JAWS-Users] what is the name of an accessibleandcompatiblemedical transcription computer program with jaws
Jerry, If this is not an independent home based business, then the real question would be to find a potential employer and ask what they use and then see if that is compatible. It won't matter how compatible AppleBasket or whatever (made up) if the company does not use it. They may even use a custom software that only checking it out will tell you for sure. I've had the you can do this to then learn that while I could do something, it is not practical. So, talk to employers. Also, if employers don't believe in you, then it won't matter how accessible the software is. The only way I got a job was to first have an employer who said this will work because we will make it work. When that Personnel Manager left the company for a much better job, my life became more and more difficult because no Management person was wanting to make it work. -Original Message- From: jerry martin Sent: Monday, April 23, 2012 10:31 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] what is the name of an accessibleandcompatiblemedical transcription computer program with jaws I do know that there is, here in Houston, The lighthouse for the blind and they have a transcription department. Re: [JAWS-Users] regarding the jaws scripts for xp and office2003
This makes perfect sense since even Microsoft will not support Office 2003 anymore. At some point, we have to move forward and keep up with our sighted peers. If all a person wants to do is be able to view an Office file, get a free viewer. If you must create Office documents, then buy the smallest package that supports your needs and watch for it on sale. Office Home and Student is not to bad for the cost and I bought mine on sale on one of those back to school almost give aways to get you in the store. -Original Message- From: tim Sent: Thursday, April 19, 2012 11:11 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] regarding the jaws scripts for xp and office2003 They already come with the later versions of jaws. So I'm afraid anyone else out there having to use older versions of Office is out of luck with the later versions of JAWS. Perhaps FS could be persuaded to release the source code of the unsupported scripts to the user community, so that those who want to could fix them. Re: [JAWS-Users] start menu search box?
It is all about learning what terms to use. Use the language of the computer and it seems to get really good. I'm finding that I use Search more and more for things I know what I'm looking for. No quotes or any other symbol or your computer will look for those. For me, it is much easier to start typing Music, Excel, Word, Notepad, ... than go hunting around in the programs or other places or even repeated Highlighted letters. Re: [JAWS-Users] start menu search box?
When I search for anything, in Windows or on a search engine, start by being as limited and specific as you reasonably can. Remember that Windows is searching in your computer and Google or some such site is searching the world. If I type Excel in Google, I'll get everything but what I want. If I type that same term in my computer, it's pretty likely I'll get the program. Also, if on a site like Google, I wouldn't type apple to search. I'd type maybe apple pie recipe or apple grower, and a zipcode. Very short and direct. On my computer, if I type doc for Documents, I'll get a couple program type things, but I can down arrow and find Documents in the list and go straight to my stored files. Searching is one thing where practice does help. The more you do it and try to do it better, the better you'll get. Re: [JAWS-Users] would like instructions for how to use Jaws on a laptop
Joanne, We need more information. Tell us about your laptop keyboard. While some laptops have scrunched up keyboards and may have to use a special layout, my laptop has the full keyboard with numpad to the right and I actually use a desktop setting for the keyboard even though it is built into a laptop. So, tell us about yours. My keyboard is just like the old stand alone keyboards with only a couple keys moved around which could be due to difference in brand. But should I ever really need to--which I hope will not be often--, is there a tutorial or list of hot keys and where they might be located on a laptop? For instance, I have heard you can't use the insert key and I'm not really sure where it is anyway. Not really even sure where control keys or start menu keys, etc. are, and by luck I found the arrow keys. But I would like to learn my way around a laptop and learn what keys would be Jaws specific. No. No! This is easy in Windows 7. Open your menus with the Windows key and type mobility center without the quotes or enough to find it. Go through the settings and there is clearly a setting about function keys. Select the other option and it is all fixed. I cannot see the specific steps from where I am but if you need them, I'll be glad to write it out and e-mail again. Jaws will work perfect. One reason someone would use the program is a writer friend of mine wanted to listen to a piece of his writing instead of reading it as the writer because he felt this would let him view it more from the perspective of a reader. Re: [JAWS-Users] wlm move an email message
In Windows Live Mail, let's say you have a message from Joe in your Inbox. Open the message. Press Alt which takes you into the ribbons assuming you have them on. I then arrow down 3 times. Delete, R something I forget I think, and Actions. Press spacebar on actions. The top choice inside that menu is Move. Press spacebar. Now, use Tab to move around in that area and you'll see your list of folders, new folder, OK, Cancel, and I think maybe one more control. Arrow through your Folders. Notice one thing that is different from other previous mail. If you have two e-mail addresses, you will have folders of Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Junk, and Delete for each one. Down under this is Storage Folders where you could make as many folders as you want. And, they are still labeled with the same Names as your mail folders starting with Drafts. At first, this was just a little confusing but once I realized what they were doing, it works great. And, I could move a message in my sleep I've done it so much. So, quite doable. I have seen that once before. Move left with your arrow to be on top of Delete. Now, you can go down again and get back to where you are wanting to go. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS won't read list of attachments in emails in WLM
I have a similar setup and don't experience this problem. What the database does is collect Title, Artist, Genre, Year, and Track titles. If the files are to corrupted to be read, there is no way CdEx will do that because it uses a code to gather the pertinent information. Hello Kuenga, If you press the Windows key and type in View Network Connections (without the quotes), you should find the item you are wanting. Press enter key on the View Network Connections choice and you will have a list of the networks including the local area network. Select the local area network icon and press enter key. Use down arrow key to either the Internet Protocol 4 or Internet Protocol 6. Tab to the Properties button and press enter key. Take care. Hello friends, Unlike windows XP, I found difficulty of going to the location where we can manually provide the IP address, for LAN Network in Windows 7. Of course I know that we need to go to the Local Area Network property, but unless a sighted friends help me, it has not been easy for me to reach there using JAWS. I always had to find a sighted person to click with mouse. Can someone provide me a accessible steps to enable to go to the desired location? Looking forward to hearing soon. Re: [JAWS-Users] Quick start for jaws?
The reason it doesn't work is the fact that you have more than one version of Jaws. It has nothing to do with XP since I'm running the same thing. Your start menu doesn't know which version to start when you do Windows J. I understand that because several versions back, I had the same situation of having two versions. - Original Message - From: Flor Lynch florl...@iol.ie To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Friday, September 11, 2009 12:47 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Quick start for jaws? That (Windows, j) command depends on one's operating system, i.e., it doesn't work on my XP SP3: and I have more than one version of JAWS on my computer. - Original Message - From: dgcnc dg...@bellsouth.net To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Friday, September 11, 2009 4:28 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Quick start for jaws? This doesn't have to be complicated. I have not set up anything special on my computer. I only have one program beginning with the letter J. So, I press the Windows key which opens the start Menu. I press the letter J and off it goes. I'm pretty sure I don't have to press Enter but do it so much that I don't think. I share a computer with a sighted person and Jaws gets turned on and off at least a dozen times a day. Not a problem at all! I have offered to have a different account for my sighted friend so they don't have to deal with Jaws and they say why bother since it is working so well to switch it on and off. Re: [JAWS-Users] battery status
I assume you mean on a laptop. Go to the Desktop and look in the System Tray portion of the Taskbar panel at the bottom of the screen. Use the left and right arrows once in the system tray to move across and it will tell you. It's the same area where you would adjust the volume. Re: [JAWS-Users] total recorder and vista with jaws?
Am I misunderstanding something here? You said you could do the recording without Jaws. Does that mean that you don't really have to have Jaws to do this kind of project? Or, are you meaning that you didn't get Jaws in your recording even though it was on and you were using it? I suspect that is what you mean. But, if you can do it without the help of Jaws, unload it when using Total Recorder and then turn it back on when you are ready to do something else. Hi, Is anyone on here using total recorder and jaws successfully with vista? When I had xp I could do soundboard recordings and record songs and stuff with no jaws voice. I was using the user interface (ui) driver. But that driver is no longer needed in vista and if you install it and try to record it won't let you and says you can not use this driver to record. However when I use the other driver that is supplied the Kernnel mode driver then I always get jaws speech in my recordings no mater what I do. This also happened in xp and that is why I used the ui driver. So now I am not sure what to do to record. Totla recorder was a program I paid for and was like one of the best programs I owned. I love using it. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it. Thanks, Sarah A.
