Re: [JAWS-Users] Attachments in Outlook 2010 Rich Text

2012-11-07 Thread Marks, Jim
Thank you for the suggestions. When I press Jaws+F7, no links show and Jaws
recommends I press Jaws+F5. And we already know that Jaws+F5 does not work in
Jaws 14 for Outlook 2010 attachments in an RTF message.

Interestingly enough, when I press Jaws+Shift+W, the RTF message does not open
up in a browser. Instead, a list of options pops up, and I can save the
attachment using the save attachments option. This latter option likely is the
best workaround yet.

I asked Freedom Scientific for assistance, but have not had the time to work
with tech support over the phone. When I do, I will let the list know the
outcome. For sure, the function of Jaws+F5 changed in Jaws 14 within Outlook
2010. That useful keystroke works just fine in Jaws 13, but does not work in
the latest Jaws version.

Someone suggested that I get state government to do something about RTF
messages. I appreciate that our choices are to change our own skills and
technologies or to change our environments. Before insisting that the world
change for me, I'd like to restore the functionality earlier Jaws versions
provided. With the two workarounds provided on this listserv, I don't think I
have to go to the extreme of asking everyone to refrain from using RTF formats
in Outlook.

Best!

I assume you have tried bringing up the links list with JAWSkey+f7 or opening

Yes, Outlook 2010 attachments in an RTF message are imbedded in the e-mail.
I think RTF messages always imbed attachments in the body of an e-mail in
Outlook. Outlook messages in HTML or Plain Text formats display the
attachments in the message header. I sometimes had luck with the method
described below for Jaws 13, but not for Jaws 14. It was hit and miss for me
in Jaws 13 and earlier versions because the link is difficult or impossible to
locate in some messages. With Jaws 14, I cannot see the imbedded link at all

Re: [JAWS-Users] Attachments in Outlook 2010 Rich Text

2012-11-07 Thread Marks, Jim
Attachments in Outlook 2010 messages formatted in RTF behave differently from
those formatted in HTML or Plain Text. Jaws 13 used the keystroke, Jaws+F5, to
create a list of the fields in RTF messages. This keystroke does not work in
Jaws 14. Others on this list suggested two workarounds that serve the purpose.
One involves cutting and pasting the RTF message body into MS Word and using
Jaws+F5. The other involves Jaws+Shift+W, which usually opens up the message
in a browser, but instead in RTF provides a menu for manipulating the message.
The standard methods for accessing attachments in HTML or Plain Text messages
will not work, including shift tabbing or pressing Jaws+A. I don't know why
RTF messages are so different, but they are. I'll be sure to let everyone know
what FS tech support has to say. I'm hoping the Jaws+F5 function will be
restored.

they work fine in HTML and Plain Text formats. Please, if anyone knows how
to handle attachments in RTF format in Outlook 2010 with Jaws 14, share your

For RTF attachments, I used the Jaws 13 keystroke of Jaws+F5 to access the
attachment. In Jaws 14, this keystroke no longer serves that purpose. In
addition, I cannot save the attachment because the system somehow does not
find the attachment I know is there. This is a big deal to me, and may
force me to go back to Jaws 13 unless there is a Jaws 14 alternative and/or

I have not used these in a RTF message, but since they are Outlook rather

With Jaws 14 in Outlook 2010 Rich Text messages, how does one access an
attachment? The Jaws 13 keystroke of Jaws+F5 does not work, and when I try
to save attachments, Jaws does not see the attachment. Put another way,
what Jaws 14 keystroke is used to list attachments in an Outlook 2010

work well, but I often get RTF formatted messages with attachments.
Thanks

since this is governmental (I believe the original was from someone at a

Hi

I assume you have tried bringing up the links list with JAWSkey+f7 or
opening the message in your browser with shift+JAWSkey+w and trying the
links list to see if the attachment appears. I don't know if viewing the
message in your browser will work for RTF messages. If these don't work, I
would open a problem with Freedom Scientific.

It was hit and miss for
me in Jaws 13 and earlier versions because the link is difficult or
impossible to locate in some messages. With Jaws 14, I cannot see the
imbedded link at all in an RTF message.

Attachments in RTF messages behave differently from those in HTML or Plain
Text. Neither suggestion below works for RTF attachments in Outlook, but they
work fine in HTML and Plain Text formats. Please, if anyone knows how to
handle attachments in RTF format in Outlook 2010 with Jaws 14, share your
method.

For RTF attachments, I used the Jaws 13 keystroke of Jaws+F5 to access the
attachment. In Jaws 14, this keystroke no longer serves that purpose. In
addition, I cannot save the attachment because the system somehow does not find
the attachment I know is there. This is a big deal to me, and may force me to
go back to Jaws 13 unless there is a Jaws 14 alternative and/or a fix coming.
Thanks!

This works, but what a pain! Surely there is a better way to open Outlook 2010
attachments in a RTF message.

Here are the steps:

Copy and paste the open RTF message into MS Word

Press Jaws+F5 to list fields imbedded in the document.

Press Enter, then the Applications Key.

Choose the File Objects submenu.

Choose Open, and the attached file opens.

Thanks for the assist. I submitted a tech support request to Freedom
Scientific, and will share any other options on how to open an attachment in an
Outlook 2010 message in RTF format.

Yes, Outlook 2010 attachments in an RTF message are imbedded in the e-mail. I
think RTF messages always imbed attachments in the body of an e-mail in
With Jaws 14, I cannot see the imbedded link at all
in an RTF message.
