- Original Message - From: "Michael Porter"To: "'KRnet'" Sent: Sunday, November 16, 2008 10:24 PM Subject: KR> KR-2 N147S - For Sale and looking for information I've recently joined the KRnet after our non-profit organization received a donation of a KR-2 (N147S serial number 2079). I'm told this particular KR-2 won first prize at Oshkosh some years back. Michael, This KR2 originated in Yakima, Washington. The builder was Jerry Robinson. He was an Attorney in the area. He used to be good buddies with Steve Kelly and I have many pictures of his KR2 flying with Steve's KR100 in Yakima. At that time it had a revmaster in it and when he converted to the continental I traded a set of fixed aluminum main gear to him for his prop. He was also selling plans for his version of canopy which I bought, but never used. The info below is not KR related, but figured some of my KR friends might want to know. Bud Midkiff Lynnwood, WA Ps. KR> RR Wing skins
James, I had a set of RR wing skins and when I talked to J. Rand, she told me to follow the KR2S plans, which also includes a urethane foam extension to the wing spars. She also said that the Dan Diehl video and his instructions on his web site would be very useful. Her main warning was to use epoxy because the pre-molded wingskins were made with epoxy. Diehl wingskins were made with vinyl ester resin, so he say use vinyl ester to attach his skins. J. Rand cautioned against using vinyl ester resin on her wingskins. The only RR wingskins I've seen installed were on Dan Gribler's KR2S, which I've included a link below. http://www.diehlaero.com/ http://www.gribler.com Bud Midkiff Lynnwood, WA I have a set of Rand Robinson wing skins that I would like to use on my project, the problem is I do not have any instructions. I contacted RR and was told to just use the Diehl installation instructions. My understanding is that these are two very different wing skin kits. Any input and/or help would be appreciated. Seeing that it's Friday, I thought I'd re-post this KR parts For Sale information. The link below will take you to my website where you'll find a For Sale Tab to click on. I have marked the few item which are no longer available. If I don't have it listed, but you see it somewhere on the site, just let me know off line what you're interested in. Thanks, Bud KR Community, I have prolonged the inevitable for over a year now, hoping things would improve, but have come to the realization that getting a waiver on my medical is next to impossible. I have several chronic conditions now and the medications they have me on are on the FAA's hit list. So, with deep regret and sadness, I have decided the best way for me, is to part this project out. Yesterday I posted a For Sale page on my website, with a partial list of some of the stuff available, with a few pictures. Check it out and if you see anything of interest and need more information just email me offline and I can provide more info or pictures if needed. I want to make these available first to the KR community and then, if necessary, I'll advertise them on Ebay or Barnstormers. KR> gear legs
Here's a cut and paste from Dan's instructions, which are located on his website. http://www.diehlaero.com/ . He has underlined MUST in the instructions. KR-2 LANDING GEAR INSTRUCTIONS The composite landing gear is made from a 3-M product called Scotchply. The castings are made of aluminum alloy. The prototype was load tested to 2.5 G's, 1,250 lbs. On each main gear. This resulted in a 3 1/2" flexure which is 75% of ultimate bending. With this information and subsequent flight testing, the gear was lengthened 4". The increased leg length provides more ground clearance. To 3/4". This has resulted in a nice springy 3 G gear. Also, at this same time the gear legs were beefed up, the casting thickness was increased by 3/32". The Gear legs are shipped precut and the edges are chamfered. The taildragger conversion mounts the main gear on the forward side of the main spar with castings bolted on just outside the fuselage sides. The gear legs angle forward. The tri-gear mounts the gear legs on the aft side of the main spar with the legs angling back. The tail dragger version of the gear leg has a straight leading edge from top to bottom. The tri-gear version has a crook on both sides of the leg. The arrow points forward. Four pieces of biaxial cloth are provided with each kit. This cloth must be put on the legs before drilling holes. The cloth runs from top to bottom of each leg. Follow drawings. This cloth is installed to prevent leg twist during touchdown and braking. After the biaxial wraps have been installed, the brakeline housing needs to be built. Either Epoxy or vinylester resin will work fine. To enclose the brakeline, a large diameter soda straw can be "hot glued" to the edge of the gear leg below where it bolts to the casting. Once attached, two layers of fiberglass should be wrapped around the straw. This holds the straw in place and helps "fair the leg". (Note: On tri-gear versions, mount the straw on the forward side of the gear. On the tail dragger version, mount the straw on the aft side of the leg. Six AN-4-32A bolts mount the main casting to the spar. Two AN-4-16A and two AN-4-17A bolts join the leg to main casting. The axle casting is bolted to the leg with four AN-4-15A bolts. The axle is bolted to the axle casting with four AN4 bolts. (Not provided in kit.) The length will vary depending on the axle and type of brake available. Cleveland and Matco are the most common. KR> Gathering 2005
These KR Gatherings continue to get better and better each year. Cheryl & I have attended the ones in Arkansas, Iowa & Illinois so far. I personally want to thank Bill for the ride in his KR! That was icing on the cake to get a ride in such a fine KR. THANKS BILL!! I didn't take many pictures this year, but those I snapped I've placed a link below to view them. The ones I could identify, I placed their names on. Hope I got them right. Can't believe how long the URL turned out to be. As far as our preference for a gathering date, I know my wife would like it earlier because she works at a Christian School, which is already back to school and she has to take a few days off to go with me. For me, I'm working part-time at Sears in the tool department and if they don't give me the time off, I'll quit. I can always get another part-time job. Bud Midkiff Lynnwood, WA email: c.midk...@verizon.net I took off at 9:20 am for a 1 hour flight in the local mountains. It took quite a while to climb to 9000 feet, as I was crossing over a glacier I had a bit of a scare. The RPM started dropping from 3000 to 2900 in about 3 seconds. I pulled out the carb heat and after about 15 seconds the RPM came back up. More proof the a POSA carb can experience carb ice, it was probably in the intake manifold. KR> Stability
Thanks Mark & KRNet, I have Rand's wingskins instead of Dan Diehl's, so I'm pretty much locked into the RAF48 airfoil, but I keep toying with the thought of going through the process of raising the rear spar to reduce the incidence some. I probably should just leave it alone and press on so I can get this plane finished. Mark, If you find someone who will drill those for you, I'd like to know as I have checked with a couple prop makers and they would not do it for me. I talked personally with Ed Sturba, and he said he'd only double drill props he had made. I also checked with Ted Hendrickson, here locally and he said he is fully retired. The people he sold his business to back east folded. The prop I have is a 52 x 50 Hendrickson drilled for SAE 1. I was going to initially try to use this one on the Type 4 engine I have, but Ideally will probably be better off with a 52 x 54 drilled for VW. Mark are the props you have listed on your web site. KR> Props
I have a Ted Hendrickson propeller which I acquired from Jerry Robinson of Yakima,WA. It is drilled for the revmaster prop hub which is SAE1 with 4 3/8" dia bolt circle. Jerry flew his KR with this prop to Merced, Ca, Oshkosh and at least one of the gatherings a few years back. The length & pitch are 52/50. The engine I have, has a VW prop hub with 4" dia. bolt circle. I would be willing to trade this prop for one with a little less pitch that would bolt up to the VW prop hub. I was told Ted is retired now, but I tried to reach him anyway to see if he could re-drill this one just to use as a test prop, but the number found on the internet for him is no longer any good. Have any of you seen props drilled for more than one bolt pattern? I'm wondering if it would be okay for ground testing? See you at the Gathering Bud Midkiff Lynnwood, WA email: c.midk...@verizon.net web: http://mysite.verizon.net/res18ums/index.html
KR> Props
Mark, Thanks for the info! Now to check around the local area for someone that can drill and balance it. Any idea what they get to do a job like that? I put my fiber frax and stainless steel on the firewall yesterday and mounted the engine temporarily. What a pain drilling the stainless or ever cutting it. I drilled a pilot hole, then stepped up to the larger bit and it just ripped the metal up. I finally resorted to a greenlee punch. What did you use to drill and cut your stainless? KR> Plan #'s
Jim, When I originally bought my plans and kit of wood back in 1985 the purchase agreement I was sent came in two copies. I was to sign and date it and send the white copy back to R/R for filing. This first one for the KR2 was Serial No. KR2 #7427 with master file book no. 67. Then in Feb 1995 I purchased the KR2S plans, which also came with a purchase agreement, that I signed and returned a copy to R/R. The new serial No. is KR-2S #542 and the master file book No. 77. I believe that I only have to present to the FAA representative, the latest serial number for the KR2S # 542, at the time of pre-flight inspections. I sure hope no one else has this number. I have added a couple pictures to my website under the engine and landing gear heading. Looking forward to Mt Vernon! Bud Midkiff KR2S Lynnwood, WA email: c.midk...@verizon.net web: http://mysite.verizon.net/res18ums/index.html Netters, A while back I contacted RR asking what number I should use to register my KR project. In the front of my plan book it has Book Number 67 and Plan number 7501. The answer I got was ³7501 was register to someone in the Mid West.² I wrote back and asked ³how can two people have the same number. I got no response. I finally dug out my receipt for the plans and found that my receipt was for 7561. I sent a photo copy of my receipt and a copy of my plan book page asking if I should just change the number in my plan book. I have still never heard from Her. Jim Morehead Cameron Park, CA
KR> HAPI Engine Mount
Phillip, In my blue construction manual, Page 98 there is a drawing of an engine mount with dimensions. I have two engine mounts for my project and neither one of them are the same dimensions as what is in the book. The one illustrated in the manual measures; top horizontal width = 7 3/4" bottom horizontal width = 8 1/4", the vertical distance is 8 3/4". The great plains engine mount I have, which bolts up to the Diehl accessory case is rectangular, 9 1/2" horizontal and 11" vertical. the other mount I have is narrow at the top and wider at the bottom, width at top is 6 3/4", width at bottom 10 1/2" ; the vertical distance is approximately 11 3/8". Both of the engine mounts I have use the same bolt pattern through the firewall. I believe this last one is a HAPI mount. Hope this helps a little. KR>Elevator Cable Tension
Ken, I did a search on KR Newsletter CD and found an article that addresses tension. The newsletter is issue #261 dated April 1999. For 3/32" cable this article states the tension for Ailerons 25+5-5lbs, Elevators 15+7-3lbs, Rudder (if closed loop) 15+7-3. In the absence of published instructions, the author offered these guidelines based on a cross section of certified airplane control system tensions. KR>Turnbuckles
I have a question regarding turnbuckle use. I switched from single center stick to rands dual stick assembly. On my single stick I had the turnbuckles for the elevator hooked directly to the stick via a AN161-16RS fork this is also the same as the MS21252-3RS fork. The problem with the dual stick is that there is not enough play behind where the AN3 bolt goes through which makes it rub on the floor. I have noticed on some of the posted pictures a very short cable in-between the stick and the rest of the cable. I think I could eliminate this extra short cable if I could find a fork that would fit in the barrel that had 1/2" behind the bolt instead of the 1/4". Any suggestions? Different subject, I had a heart attack on the second of November and they found the blockage and installed a stint in the area to fix the problem. I told my cardiologist that I am a licensed private pilot and he told me that the FAA would require me to be grounded a minimum of six months. Have any of you been through this or know what my responsibilities are in this matter and just what hoops I am now required to jump through for them? Am I supposed to notify the FAA when something like this has happened? Bud Midkiff (KR-2 stretched to KR2S length) Lynnwood, WA email: c.midk...@verizon.net

Ron & Ken, Thanks for the feedback! This is encouraging. I think I'll continue working on completing my KR in the hope of getting my medical back with no problem. I'm scheduled for a stress test on Jan 9th, so should know more at that time. Mine was not a violent attack, but heavy chest pain. I went in to emergency and their tests showed I was having one. So they did the angioplasty with dye, found the blocked artery then installed a coated stint to correct the problem. I don't think it really did much damage. To throw another product out there to see if anyone has experience using it on their project, I'll mention a product that they use and recommend here at a large paint shop located on Paine Field / Boeing Field in Everett Washington.
