[lace] RIP Marianne Stang

2020-10-08 Thread pene
Dear fellow lacemakers,
Last Thursday, 1st October, 2020, one of our favourite German lacemakers,
Marianne Stang, passed away. I am sure that there are many lacemakers who
will have known her longer than the 15 years that I have, but I will miss
her very much.
When I met her in Pärnu in July, 2005 at the first Estonian Lace
Festival that I attended, I had no idea of what sort of person she was,
but soon discovered that she was friendly, kind, generous, tenacious and
hard working, but always humble & cheerful.
I hope that she has left behind many lacemakers who have fond memories of
her.
Yours sadly,Penelope Piip An Aussie lacemaker in Tartu, Estonia.

Re: [lace] Learning Binche RE: Need some opinions

2007-06-26 Thread pene
It is interesting to read the opinions regarding the learning of Binche
lace.

This Friday there is a 2-day workshop in Pärnu where Binche is being taught.
I have decided to not do the course for a few different reasons. The main
reason is that I've been commissioned by an American exchange teacher to
make a metre long edging of lace for a blouse that she had made before she
returned to Pittsburgh. I am making a pattern from the Estonian pattern
book.
The other reason is that I am not really interested in learning Flanders
or Binche.
I would rather explore the laces that I know. I love Milanese & I want
to learn

more about this lace. Does anyone else feel the same way? Who said that you
have to learn every type of lace that was ever made?

I should say "Thank you" to everyone who answered my questions that I had
when I was making my travel pillow. It is now in use with the edging
started &
it now has a bag to carry it in. I found among my fabric stash a piece
of denim
printed with a lace pattern from which I made a drawstring bag. I'll
post a photo
when I get one. My pillow kit did have a cylinder piece of foam which
was too
long, so instead of cutting it I cut a smaller section of foam "pool
noodle". I'm

using my English midland bobbins so I expect to get many comments from the
Estonian lace-makers who are more familiar with the plain continental
bobbins.

I'll post about the lace exhibition that is on this weekend when I get
back home.

Enjoy your weekend also,
Pene,

[lace] Halas Lace Museum & 2008 Competition

2007-07-09 Thread pene

I didn't have the information at hand yesterday, but you can see some
panoramic views of the Halas Lace Museum if you go to:
<http://www.muzeum.halasicsipke.hu/>

I asked what was the theme for next year's competition & was told it
was titled "LOVE". The rules for this year's competition are set out at
the homepage of <http://www.halasicsipke.hu/>. Just click on the
English or German flag first. Hopefully the rules will stay the same but
I will ask my contact. It is stated that any lace that has been exhibited
previously can also be submitted.

And for those that like lace bags, next year's OIDFA Congress in the
Netherlands, has a competition with the theme of "BAGS". For more
information please go to: <http://www.oidfa2008groningen.com/en/>

Re: [lace] Lace in Baltic ports

2007-07-27 Thread pene

Hi Steph,

It is a pity that your cruise isn't stopping in Tallinn.

When I was in Helsinki in June to see a lace exhibit I picked up
a brochure for the Craft Museum of Finland: <http://www.craftmuseum.fi/>
Click on the English or German flag. Under the sitemap I found location info
& looked up "Jyväskylä" on a map & sadly it's about 250 kms north of
Helsinki.

I remember reading that lace making was one of the handicrafts listed.
Lace is called 'pits' in Finnish & Estonian.

I wish I could have been more helpful.

[lace] Trip to DownUnder

2008-03-11 Thread pene

Dear Australian Aracheans,

I'm planning a trip to Sydney near the end of June to see my parents &
brothers whom I haven't seen since I was there in 2000 - that's right, 8
years ago. I might do a little road trip down to Canberra (& maybe
Cooma) & then to Narooma where my parents live.

Can anyone tell me if there is anything happening in the lace world down
there at that time of year?

[lace] RIP: Eeva Talts (1944 - 2016)

2016-03-29 Thread pene piip

Sad news: Estonian lacemaker Eeva Talts has died at the age of 72.
As well as teaching bobbin lace she organized the annual Lace Festival
in Pärnu & was a founder of the Estonian Bobbin Lace Association (Eesti
Niplispitsi Selts) in 1995.
She published "Eesti niplispitsi mustreid/Estonian bobbin lace patterns"
in 2003. In 2012 Eeva wrote a book about tatting in the Estonian
language, and in 2015 published a book about bobbin lace from the Seto
region, which is on the Estonian & Russian border.

She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

[lace] Royal wedding

2004-05-15 Thread Pene Piip
I went to the Sydney Morning Herald's web-site to see photos & get a
description of what Mary's dress was made of:

It was really unusual to see gum leaves in her wedding bouquet.
The article below described her dress & veil.
So beautiful in satin and lace
The "something old" was eight metres of 100-year-old Irish lace, laid
beneath the soft-panelled pleating of her full skirt, fashioned from 24
metres of duchess satin and lined in silk organza.
Another 24 metres of duchess satin was used to craft the six-metre-
long train, which was managed with ease by Mary's attendants,
Amber Petty and Mary's sisters Patricia Bailey and Jane Stephens.
Her veil, which featured the same Irish lace, was "something borrowed",
formerly a gift to Frederik's grandmother, the late Queen Ingrid, from
Crown Princess Margaret of Sweden.

[lace] Spring Vacation week

2004-04-27 Thread Pene Piip
Dear fellow Arachneans,
I just want to let you all know that at the end of last week I met 3
bobbin lace makers in a country that not everyone knows about.
Our family visited the country of Estonia, the northern-most Baltic country.
In particular we stayed for 5 nights in Tartu, which is also known as "The
City of Good Thoughts". It is where Tartu University is located and the
house that was built for my husband's paternal grandfather. Several
people referred to "Oru Villa" as the prettiest house in Tartu.
If you wish to see the house go to:
We visited Lia Looga, & her husband, in Tartu on Wednesday & were shown
her lace pictures, flowers, jewelry, scarves & table linen that she had made
over the last 5 years. Then on Thursday, we drove to Narva, the eastern-most
city, & saw a display of Russian bobbin lace made by Olga Kublitskaja.
She has a web-site: We also explored the
restored Narva Castle from which we could look across the Narva River into
Russia. We then drove back to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia that afternoon.
On Friday afternoon, we had arranged to meet Kristiina Halberg, who is the
President of the Estonian Bobbin Lace Society, under the clock of the 600
year old Town Hall at 4pm. While we drank coffee, we exchanged lace books.
I gave Kristiina a copy of Rosemary Shepherd's "Introduction to Bobbin Lace"
book for the Society's library & she gave me 2 books about Estonian Bobbin
Lace. My husband acted as translator as he speaks Estonian very well. He
has been a regular visitor for the last 10 years, & listens to Estonian radio
via the internet when he can.
The Estonian Bobbin Lace Society (Eesti Niplispitsi Selts) started in 1995 &
will be celebrating their 10th anniversary next year.
The weather was very pleasant during the week we were there.

2004-08-27 Thread Pene Piip
Dear Fellow Spiders around the world,
I thought it was time to say "hello" (or "Tere!" which is what
Estonians say when you greet someone.
We have been here for 4 weeks now & our vehicle & container
aren't due for a few more weeks. Meanwhile our 2 sons will be
starting school next week at the Tartu International School.
(There are only 19 children from Grades 1 to 10.) So I'll be
busy during the next 7 days getting the boys ready for school
and entertaining my MIL who arrived yesterday from Adelaide
via Sweden.
I have seen some tatting in one of the many handicraft shops
which sell items to tourists. I'm looking forward to seeing the
photos taken at the OIDFA Congress by some of the Estonian
attendees when I get to meet some of the members of the
Estonian Bobbin Lace Society.

[lace] Bobbin Lace in Tartu, Estonia

2004-08-28 Thread Pene Piip
Dear Fellow Spiders around the world,
I just had to share with you all my little exploration yesterday at
the Estonian National Museum which has free admission on
Fridays. The museum is only 3 blocks away & my eldest son &
MIL came with me to see the place.
There was a lovely display of costumes on the top floor & I saw GOLD
(at least to me it looked like gold) bobbin lace on 2 of the manequins,
& some crocheted, knitted & several pieces of bobbin lace made with
thick thread, probably for durability. There was some fine drawn-thread
work as well as a lot of beautiful embroidery.
I also saw a pedlar's chest with lengths of machine lace & ribbons, a
beautiful beaded belt & other things that you would expect to find being
sold by a travelling pedlar.
Before we left the museum we went back into the main exhibit hall on
the ground floor & I realized that I hadn't seen what was along the back
wall. Well, there in a glass case was some small pieces of BL with an
old photo of a lacemaker, & a bunch of bobbins (each about 7 inches
long & pointed like large honiton bobbins) & hanging from a piece of
lace which was pinned to the wall of the display case.
The museum doesn't allow photos to be taken, but I hope that I may be
able to get a closer look at the lace after October when Lia Looga, a
lacemaker I met in April & who lives in Tartu, holds a display of "Bobbin
Lace Ornaments" at the Museum.
Take care & keep making lace,

Re: [lace] New and saying hi

2004-09-10 Thread Pene Piip
G'day Tracy,
Welcome to Arachne. And I highly recommend joining a
group, even a small one if you want to get started again.
I've been a member since 1996. Helen Bell wrote a letter to
the Australian Lace Guild about Arachne, I subscribed &
a few members of the New England Lace Group, through
Arachne, invited me to meet them & join the group.
I'm also a homesick Aussie, who until 2 months ago was a
resident in Massachusetts for the last 13.5 years and now
I am living in Tartu, Estonia. All because I married, 23 years
ago, a computer engineer who is an American by birth, but
both his parents are Estonian by birth. And then in 1994, he
& his brother inherited their grandparents' properties. Now we
are living in "the prettiest house in Tartu" & it's a palace when
you compare it to the local standard of housing.
We have been here 6 weeks now with our 2 sons (15 & 12
years old) & next week will be hectic & exciting. Our container
was due to finally arrive today in Tallinn (the capital) & maybe
we'll see it delivered on Wednesday. We are 2 hours south, &
you never know, it might get here earlier. I just hope the truck
can get around a few corners & it'll probably disrupt traffic as
our cobblestone street is narrow & used as a short cut between
2 one-way streets.
Meanwhile I received an invitation this week to the opening on
Wednesday, Sept.15th of an exhibition at the Estonian National
Museum, of a display of "Bobbin Lace Jewellery" by Lia Looga.
Lia attended the OIDFA Prague Congress where she displayed
her jewellery & adornaments, and she also lives here in Tartu.
The next day is my 46th birthday & on Friday my MIL who is
currently visiting us is throwing a birthday bash for me & herself.
It was her 78th birthday on Monday Sept. 6th.
And today I made ANZAC cookies/biscuits using local honey
instead of golden syrup. Yummy.

[lace] A very unusual birthday!

2004-09-17 Thread Pene Piip
Dear fellow-spiders,
I was wondering what Thursday was going to be like. It was my 46th birthday
& I was very pleased to get an email from an Australian high school friend
whom I hadn't had an email from in a while.
Anyway, while we have been in Estonia we just take each day as it comes.
Erik & I went grocery shopping in the morning & we bought a birthday cake.
It seems that we've been spending more time together since we arrived here
than we did in the USA. I hope that he will start looking for a job soon,
as the
money we have from the USA house sale will not last forever. It has been
suggested that I tutor students who want to improve their English, but I feel
that if Erik wants us to live here then it's more of his responsibility to
take
care of us financially, than it is mine.

I can truthfully say that I have received the biggest present on my birthday
that I'm ever likely to receive. Our shipping container had been promised for
Wednesday but took longer to get cleared by the custom's officials. Then
we got a phone call on Thursday morning saying that it would be delivered
later that afternoon. At 5:00pm everyone was watching as the box was
lifted off the truck & put on the ground. Then the doors were opened & the
unloading of our "stuff" began.
We stopped at 8:30pm to cut my cake & we ate half of it. The cakes &
pastries are very good here. I think they are more interesting in variety &
not too sweet. Well, at about 1:30am the box was being put back on the
truck & sent on its way to be filled up again. Now we face the daunting
task of finding a place for everything. The unpackers arrived this morning
& Erik had them move all the larger pieces of furniture, but our living room
is so full of boxes that it is impossible to watch the TV..
BTW I attended Lia Looga's "Bobbin Lace Jewellery" Exhibition on Wednesday.
She was very pleased to see me, & the display of her jewellery, handkerchiefs
& clothing embellishments that she has made over the last 5 years was quite
impressive. My MIL came with me & she greatly admired the beautiful items.
As a birthday gift my MIL gave me 2 small knitted lace doilies that she had
found in a handicraft shop in Tallinn. I might hang one in a window.
I'm off to bed now, as tomorrow we have a busy day ahead of us.

[lace] First Snowfall

2004-11-17 Thread Pene Piip
Dear gentle spiders,
Yesterday (Tuesday) we had several snow flurries & a light dusting overnight.
Then mid-morning it started snowing for several hours & now there is a good
couple of centimeters which has accumulated on all the trees & the ground.
So winter is finally here in Tartu. And I've been tatting some snowflakes.
Mary Piper's "Tatting" book has some interesting patterns. I adapted one
four-pointed motif I liked into six points. I found that by using mock rings
& split rings, cutting & tying off after making a round can be eliminated.
I would like to remind everyone about celebrating St Catherine's Day on
the 25th, next Wednesday. I'm hoping to make some Cattern Cookies.
Stay warm & happy,

[lace] Cattern Cookies

2004-11-18 Thread Pene Piip
As Helen Bell has already mentioned, there is the recipe in the Jones & Deer
book which I prefer to use. Last year I made cookies instead of cakes.
So I'll post my cookie recipe as a variant to their recipe.
CATTERN COOKIES
Combine in a large bowl 1.25 cups of plain flour with 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon,
1/4 cup of ground almonds, 1 cup of sugar, 2 teaspoons of caraway seeds.
( One ounce of currants is optional, depending on if you like them or not.)
Add to mixture 1/2 cup (100g) of melted butter & 1 medium-sized egg & mix all
together. Then I just formed the dough into a long sausage shape, about 2" in
diameter, wrapped it in plastic wrap & stored the log in the freezer for an
hour.

Preheat oven to 400F / 200C & then after removing plastic wrap, slice the log
into thin slices ( about 1/4 inch wide) and lay them on a cookie (or
biscuit) tray
and bake for 10 minutes until slightly brown. I might have even baked them for
5 minutes on the other side. They are really nice dunked in tea or coffee.

If anyone else makes them let me know how the cookies turn out.

[lace] Stuff to make me homesick

2004-12-11 Thread Pene Piip
Hi to all fellow-spiders,
Today has been a good day. The sun was shining this morning & the Postman,
who I think is a lady, delivered my Australian Lace magazine & a note to say
that there was a parcel for me waiting at the Tartu Post Office.
When I opened it I found that my friend, Laurie Hughes, who had recently
visited
England had mailed me a UK Lace Guild Xmas bobbin & a glass ornament with
a hedgehog painted on it. She had also sent me a packet of Tim Tams which I'll
have to share with DH & 2 sons, but I'll keep them until Christmas.

The Australian Lace magazine had a short story about how Liz Ligeti, with help
from Ruth Budge, fooled Helen Bell at the Colorado State Fair with her Torchon
handkerchief which is really pretty.
Well, I better go & do a few useful things before I have to get dinner.

[lace] Winter Solstice or St. Thomas's Day

2004-12-22 Thread Pene Piip
Well, we have finally reached the shortest day or the longest night of the year
in the northern hemisphere. It seems strange that street-lights get turned off
around 8:30am & the sun rises at 9am but doesn't climb over the hill near
our house until after 11am. We did get a snowfall on Sunday morning, which
has made everything all white again. Hopefully it'll stay until after
Christmas.

On Sunday, our little lace group visited a working mill in the town of
Hellenurme
that is about 30 km west of Tartu. They had a small display of folk
costumes, some
of which had beautiful embroidery & crocheted or bobbin lace on the blouses. We
all enjoyed a simple afternoon tea before heading home again. One of our newer
members is deaf, but she is able to lip-read. We all received a small bar
of chocolate
and a divider pin with a tiny glass creature attached to the top. Mine
looks like a white
owl with read eyes, a black nose & black laid-back sort-of-horns (I won't
call them
ears because I know that owls have ear-holes, not ears like people have).

And I'll wish everyone a Happy Christmas & a peaceful year ahead in 2005,
Take care & keep making lace to make yourself happy,

Re: [lace] Translation ? Polish

2005-01-16 Thread Pene Piip
Hi Brian,
I was behind in reading my lace digests, so didn't see your question.
It is an Estonian word. "pitsipulgad" literally translates to "lace sticks" or
what we call bobbins. "pitsipulk" is the Estonian word for a "lace stick".
I googled the word and this web-page came up:

It gives a bio of Lia Looga who lives here in Tartu.
My MIL translated it for me in 2003, but with moving house my computer

I am so pleased to receive my UK Lace Guild magazine.
Did anyone else find interesting the record attempt at the
largest number of lacemakers in one place? And it didn't
count according to the Guinness Book of Records.
I saw something recently about the world's longest piece
of embroidery in the UK being accepted into the world
record book. I think that the longest piece of handmade
lace would have to be made to get an entry. Sadly I will
not be making it as I have too many other things to do.
BTW could the car thief topic be moved to "chat" where it belongs.

[lace] News Update from Estonia

2005-02-26 Thread Pene Piip
Hi all gentle web-spiders,
I know I haven't posted often, but last week was spent
trying to reduce the level of dust in the house so that we
could have an "Open House" last Thursday which was
Estonian Independence Day.
Then yesterday Erik & I travelled all the way to the west
coast to the city of Pärnu for the annual meeting of the
Estonian Bobbin Lace Society. There I met Eeva Talts who
is a talented & lovely lady, & who welcomed me to the group.
Eeva has a pattern in the UK Lace Guild 2005 calendar.
I took along my Milanese snake & my Bucks Butterfly to show
the Society's President, Kristiina Halberg, who I met last April.
Everyone was impressed with my work. We gave Lia Looga a
ride home after the meeting. Waiting in the mail box was my
OIDFA magazine which made my day just that little bit better.
I've been asked to teach tatting to a two ladies who are friends
of an American lady who lives near me. So I'll have to dig up
some spare shuttles so that I will have something to teach with.
And I also want to get started on my piece for the Denver I.O.L.I.
Lace Competition. And decide which classes to choose.
Warm regards, from snowy Estonia,

[lace] Using Polyester thread

2005-03-05 Thread Pene Piip
I know that lacemakers prefer to use nature fibres - such as cotton, linen
& silk
which are most commonly available. But is there anything wrong with using
100% polyester sewing cotton? Does it have any quirky characteristics?

I am trying out an idea & I don't want the white colour thread to become
yellow over time.
Thanks in advance for any comments, especially any personal experiences.

Re: [lace] IOLI convention

I've only attended 2 previous conventions & both times I just
took an afternoon class, so that I could sleep-in & give me
time to relax. This year I'm going to take 2 classes. I usually
choose to go on a tour on the Wednesday. In San Diego I
went on the Zoo tour & in NJ I went on the lace factory tour.
Don't feel that you have to do everything - though you don't
want to miss the functions that are included in the registration
fee. And you can save money by providing your own breakfast
or lunches - some Slim Fast drinks & bars saw me through.
This time its the airfare from Estonia to Denver that is going
to cost me heaps. But yes, you do need some spending
money, there is just so much to choose from.
Weronika, tell your husband that the conventions planned
for the next 3 years are too far away from California. Quote
"carpe diem" at him & say this may be the only opportunity
that you may get. You never know what the future holds.
Hopefully, I'll see you at the Arachne lunch in Denver.

[lace] Camilla's Hats

2005-04-11 Thread Pene Piip
Now I know why the list was quiet over the weekend - the
UK Lace Guild's convention was on. I hope someone will
report on the high-lights of the weekend. I suppose I can
read about when my magazine arrives. My I.O.L.I. Bulletin
has yet to arrive though.
Anyway, the weather here in Tartu was dreary both days.
DH surprised me by watching the live telecast of the Royal
Wedding all the way through. I finished knitting a scarf at
the same time. Camilla's first hat was described as being
a straw hat covered with French lace & it was quite elegant.
Then when she appeared at the chapel with what I would've
called "grass" instead of feathers I was a little disappointed.
I would have chosen something more befitting of a Duchess.
What did other viewers think?
I just hope that we see some sunshine this week. The snow
has all gone, & the crocuses & snow-bells are blooming.

[lace] Australian Lace magazine

2005-06-05 Thread Pene Piip

Dear fellow web-crawlers & lacemakers,

The weather yesterday was overcast & drizzling most of the day,
but when the mail arrived my day brightened up a bit. My copy of
"Australian Lace" had arrived. And there on page 22 is a e-letter
I had written back in January in response to a real letter from Kath
Shadbolt asking me lots of questions - the main one being "What
had made me join the Australian Lace Guild when I lived in Estonia?"

So I explained as simply as I could how I had joined the ALG in 1982
& since then have moved around the world, first to America in 1990,
& then to Tartu last year. No big mystery! It is good to see my letter
in print, as I had thought it might have been included in the last issue.

OK, time to go do something worthwhile, :-)

For those that want a light to pin to their pillow, get
a Itty Bitty Booklight. I asked for one for Christmas
several years ago, & explained that I could use it to
read in bed, but also as a light for my lacemaking.

It can be plugged into an outlet (or power point) but
also has a battery (4 x D size batteries) power source
which I find useful as I don't want anyone tripping on
my power cords. The bulb is small & I can pin the
lamp onto my pillow with a divider pin. And it is small.
One of the best presents DH ever gave me.

[lace] Hanseatic Days 2005

2005-07-11 Thread Pene Piip

Last week I was going to write about the opportunity I had to
demonstrate bobbin lacemaking at the 25th Hanseatic Days
Festival which was hosted by the city of Tartu, but unfortunately
I was busy doing other things & preparing for a weekend guest.

Tartu has held a Medieval Festival close to Tartu Day (June 29th)
since 1996, but this year was to be special. The city would be host
to the largest gathering of representatives of the Hanseatic Towns.
Everyone who wants to dons medieval attire for the occasion.

I made an impromptu roller pillow that fitted in a basket, then wound
linen thread on some bobbins that my father had made for me many
years ago & started a pattern out of Brigitte Bellon's Reticilla lace book.
My bobbins were all different shapes & sizes but had that rustic look.

Here is a photo from the Tartu City web-site that shows the president
of the Estonian Bobbin Lace Society (Eesti Niplispits Selts), Kristiina
Halberg, making lace on a roller pillow.
<http://www.tartu.ee/index.php?page_id=2931&lang_id=2&pic_id=804>

Kristiina & her husband, Priit, were our guests for the weekend & she
had made their costumes. On Saturday morning Kristiina was pressing
out the wrinkles in my sewing room when she realized that right in front
of her were 2 shelves full of bobbin lace books. What a wonderful distraction!
Kristiina was in heaven with not enough time to look at them all. But a
wonderful reward to look forward to after demonstrating all day.

There were some pillows & bobbins wound with coloured thread for those
people who wanted to try BL. And we were able to listen to the music &
folk dancing on the stage near us. And after experiencing thunderstorms
during the week, we were fortunate to have good weather during the 3
days of the festival. Lots of people from Estonia & other Hanseatic towns
had a wonderful time.

On Saturday I visited the booths where the major Estonian towns were
promoting themselves. I received a very warm welcome at the Narva tent
from Olga Kublistkaja whom I met last April. She had some beautiful lace
embellished scarves for sale. At the Pärnu tent, Eeva Talts was making a
simple bookmark. On Sunday we had a photo taken of all the 8 lacemakers
who had been there teaching & demonstrating. I thought that was quite a
good turn out for such a small group which was only started 10 years ago.

BTW if you have access to "BBC World" on cable, there is a travel program
called "Tales from Europe" which is featuring the Baltic Countries, with the
reporter visiting Estonia in the last program.

Next Monday we are visiting Pärnu for the day to view an exhibition of lace.
Then there will be just one more week before I fly to Chicago for a few days
before flying to Denver. I think I better start packing my bag.

Time to get some lunch,
Pene

[lace] IOLI Denver Convention

2005-08-09 Thread Pene Piip

Yes, I agree that the Rocky Mountain Lace Guild did a terrific job in hosting
this year's convention. Vasna, Cindy, Helen & everyone else in the group
should be proud of what they achieved - a week that all attendees enjoyed
thoroughly.

It was fun educating other lacemakers about Estonia, & I have promised
Cathy Kozlowski that I will write a review of the 3 Estonian books that I've
donated to the IOLI Library. One that I donated last year is currently listed
under the Knitted Lace section (& includes an English translation for the
symbols) & the other 2 will be listed under Bobbin Lace section when
next year's Handbook is published. But I think the on-line library listings
need to be updated.

I finally arrived home on Sunday afternoon with very little sleep & went
to bed about 9pm & slept through to 7am. Woke up to the sound of rain.
Thankfully today (Tuesday) is pleasantly sunny.

Helen told me that I was the only person to put 2 pieces into the lace
competition. I was going to enter only one piece into the 'original design'
section but realized that I had a penguin that I had finished early last year
& that if I mounted it I could enter it in the 'technical proficiency'
section.

So I did. A lady told me after the banquet that she voted for my penguin
& wanted to know where I got the pattern for it . I told her "The Penguin
Pattern Book" published by the UK Lace Guild. But I'd made a few small
changes to the very simple design.

I wasn't among the prize winners, this time, because my "Stonewall Under
Snow is Silent" was framed with fabric that was blue with silver snowflakes
& wind swirls, & according to the judges the matting was "a disaster" &
"distracted from the lace". Now I know that it is better to use a flat colour
for the mounting. Obviously, not everyone, especially judges, like art that
has been mounted in a colourful way.

I was somewhat disappointed with the judge's "constructive criticisms".
Why do judges use the word "nice" when there are better words which
are more complimentary? One judge wrote that "You have such nice
ideas technically & those are completely invisible in the presentation" &
the other comment was "This piece is very nice but..." Were they looking
at it from 5 feet away?

If anyone wants to see my penguin, I've put it up on the webshots album.
My apologies for venting, but thanks for listening,
Pene

[lace] OIDFA Bulletin

2005-09-12 Thread Pene Piip

Dear Liz,

It is a strange co-incidence that you asked about the OIDFA
Bulletin, & then newest issue (#3) arrives in my letter box this morning.
There is a mention of Princess Mary & the Royal Danish family's lace.

As Jeri said, the magazine is very dependent on contributions from
members all around the world, but definitely biased towards Europe.
Personally, I think that it is a good magazine, but as every article has
to be published in English & French, there is a little duplication.

This issue has 40 pages, not counting the cover pages which are
printed with membership fees & who to pay them to, depending on
where you live, & a directory of the current Executive Committee.

Christine Beswick is the collector for Australian members, so she
might be able to tell you of someone who lives near you who can
share the Bulletins with you, to help you make the decision about
joining. The membership for Australians is currently $58 AUD.

Warm regards,

Hi Bev,

I just had a thought that I don't want to spend a lot of time making

Can participants notify you with regard to the type of lace they will
be making & what sort of lace they would like to receive.

[lace] Re: Christmas card exchange

2005-10-14 Thread Pene Piip

To all fellow Arachneans,

I did not mean to offend anyone by my previous posting.
I do appreciate tatting as I've been tatting on & off for
since I was shown how to nearly 25 years ago. For those
who were offended, please accept my sincere apology.

I'd just like to share something that happened last year.
It was our first Christmas here in Estonia, & I was looking
forward to learning what the traditions here are, but I was
very little disappointed that what I found available in the
way of Christmas decorations were all "Made in China".

So I decided to make some tatted snowflakes to give as
a little gift inside cards. I gave one to each of the American
families that we had met during the autumn months. These
are families who are here working as missionaries, & not
one of them sent us a card in return. They all appreciated
my handwork, but I was very disillusioned by the experience.

So please understand that I just expressed a preference for
a card with the same quality of handwork that I'm contributing.

I signed onto Arachne in June '96, so I was among the 2nd "wave".

I thought about "Archduchess/duke" as a title but that is too royal.
I looked in the dictionary & found the word "archangel" which isn't
sexist either. It is also close to the word arachne. Made me think
of all those spiders who get sent to heaven just because people
are frightened of them & don't appreciate their vital role in nature.

[lace] St. Martins Day Fair

2005-11-13 Thread Pene Piip
Here in Estonia, children look forward to St. Martin's Day (Nov. 10th) &
St. Catherine's Day (Nov. 25th), when they go around to homes in the
neighbourhood, sing songs & get small tokens of candy or fruit. Boys &
girls dress up as men on St. Martin's Day & as women on St. Catherine's
Day. We had mandarins to give out but we didn't get any visitors this week.

On Friday I travelled up to Tallinn by bus to demonstrate bobbin lacemaking
at the St. Martin's Day Fair (or Mardilaat) at the Song Festival grounds,
underneath the big stage. A display of lace had been set up on the 3rd
level & that is where Kristiina, Liia, Triina & I sat making lace for the
afternoon. Olga from Narva had her own table covered with her Russian lace.

I had my photo taken several times, but the best moment was when an older
couple stood in front of us, & he pointed to Triina's pillow & said, in
English, that she was making a sash that is worn around the waist. I think
he really meant the woven belts. I quickly corrected him by saying that it
was a bookmark! They were from Gloucester & said that they hadn't seen
lacemaking before, but he knew of the lace machines in Nottingham. I
answered a few more questions & then they left.

The theme for the fair was "National Lace" & there was also a small display
of a lace collection on the first floor which I saw before I left to return
home. It wasn't possible to get close to the lace, so I couldn't see any
details.

This year was the 9th time this fair has been held. There are many
different sorts of handicrafts for sale. And I hope I can be there next year.

Warm regards from,

[lace] Lace Magazines

2006-03-04 Thread Pene Piip

Dear fellow Arachneans,

Today is Saturday & after being empty all week, our letter box had 2 items
just for me! One was the OIDFA Bulletin & the other "Australian Lace".

The OIDFA Bulletin has lots of interesting articles. One story is of how
the Canadian "Quilt of Belonging" came to be. Margot Walker has written an
excellent article & there are photos of 4 blocks for the countries of
Belgium, Brazil, Malta & Paraguay, that feature a piece of lace. For those
that missed the mention of this on Arachne last year, the web-site is:
<http://www.invitationproject.ca/> where you can view & read all about the
individual blocks.

Other stories are about an Ethnological Museum in Prague, a small lace
collection in the Civic Museum of History & Art in Trieste, Italy,
lacemaking in Crete & also in Croatia, & a Bucks pattern for a round mat
edging from UK lacemaker Bee Barford.

My copy of "Australian Lace" was a little creased, but has the patterns
from the previous issue reprinted due to printer problems. There are some
lovely bookmarks & edgings by Olwyn Scott & Robin Hueppauff. Kath Shadbolt,
who I met last August, has shown how a coloring book illustration & simple
tape lace, can be used to produce a Beaked Coralfish. And there is a
pattern for a tatted bag named Anastasia.

Lots of lovely reading to get me through the next few weeks, while I wait
for the snow to start melting.

[lace] LOKK competiton

I just had a look at the free pattern for Easter egg decoration & realized
that it could also be put on a ball for a Christmas decoration.

Then I wondered what "30 Jaar LOKK" was about. When I clicked on it, there
was an English flag & behold "The Four Elements" appeared, which is the
title of a competition to celebrate the 30th anniversary of LOKK.

The competition details a there in a PDF
<http://www.lokk.nl/30jaarLOKK/WedstrijdDeVierElementen2008Engels.pdf>
but they want a photo of the finished piece to be sent with the
registration & the piece cannot have been exhibited before but non-members
are allowed to enter.

I might try to think of an idea for this. Lots of possibilities.

The snow here in Tartu is starting to melt finally &
I'm giving a young deaf girl a tatting lesson today.

Keep happy & keep making lace,

There is a different snake in Claire Burkhard's "Lace For Ten Pairs" on

The 'Four Small Squares' on page 52 could be enlarged for thicker threads.
The first square has leaves, but the other 3 could be used for beginners.
And on page 53 are 'Two Motifs for Key Fob' which are also good.

[lace] Anna magazine - July 2006 issue

2006-06-30 Thread Pene Piip
I just picked up a copy of the July issue of Anna in which there is a
course on making a a very but elegant Bruges collar in bobbin lace. The
course actually describes how to design your own collar using different
sized flowers.

There is also a comment written: "Laces are making a comeback on the
fashion scene. And there is nothing old-fashioned about them!"

There is also an edging for an oval mat which could be described as a
sampler. And 2 table runners, one of which has been worked with several
different colours for the floral elements. The other one has a modern
design element to it & is made in bright green, but I think that it would
look good in a variegated thread.

There is also hardanger embroidery among the usual crotchet & cross-stitch
ideas & knitting patterns.

Haapsalu, a little further north. On Monday there is also an exhibition of
the work of members of the Estonian Bobbin Lace Society & I am displaying
some of my recent work in this time, including my "Stonewall" & "Penguin"
which I entered in the Denver competition. I am pleased that a young

[lace] Lace Exhibit & workshop in Pärnu (long)

2006-07-21 Thread Pene Piip
e competition with an orchid that
she had made with metallic threads. The front doors were locked & then
everyone helped dismantle the display.

Katre & I had Chinese food for dinner, then walked down to the Pärnu beach,
where we ate an ice cream before walking back to our room. The next morning
we packed our bags & met the other lacemakers in front of the Pärnu Hotell
where a small bus took us all to Haapsalu to visit the Swedish Museum.
Kristina Malmberg gave a talk about the Swedish Estonians & their
lacemaking traditions & the lace that they made & wore. We then browsed
through the museum. There was in one room a very long embroidered mural
which depicted the history of Haapsalu. I decided that I had to buy a set
of postcards of the mural. Then we all walked along the path that wound
around the bay to a beautiful old building that had been restored & was now
a restaurant. Katre used to spend her summers at her grandparent's home
nearby & remembers the building when it was neglected. On the way we walked
past a bench that had been erected to mark where Tchaikovsky used to sit &
contemplate nature & receive inspiration. We enjoyed a simple but delicious
lunch & then walked back to the bus where we said our farewells to those
who had to travel in different directions.

Hedvig informed me that their Finnish organization would be celebrating
their 20th anniversary next year with a special exhibition & invited me to
come & see it. We arrived back in Pärnu just before 5pm & I then said my
final good-byes before catching the next bus back to Tartu where my
husband's brother & his wife were waiting to greet me after travelling all
the way from Adelaide in South Australia.

If you look closer at the 2nd & 3rd photo you can read about bobbin lace in
English. The name at the bottom is "Helene Kuma" & for those interested in
seeing more of her work the IOLI Library has a copy of "Niplis".

These photos would have been taken sometime in April, when her work was on
display at the castle museum in Narva, Estonia. I visited the museum also &
was glad that I had, as many of the lace pieces were not in her book.
Helene was trained in ceramics & some of her porcelain was also on display.

I was planning on writing an article about Helene & her lace for some of
the popular lace magazines but I feel that permission from her is needed
before I publish. But I need some help writing such an important letter in
Estonian.

Have a look, but please don't copy these images. The photographer has no
right to be putting these photos up on the internet without permission from

[lace] Re: Lace Magazine

2006-11-04 Thread Pene Piip

My copy of Lace #124 arrived in the middle of the week
but I was just given it this morning when DH told me that
he didn't know how it ended up on his desk downstairs.

Obviously he had brought the mail into the house & must
have been distracted enough (probably by a phone call)
not to notice that there was something for me & I was out
of the house at the time.

Thank you for another wonderful magazine with lots of
interesting photos & articles to read.

[lace] Lace for Christmas

2006-11-29 Thread Pene Piip

Hi everyone,

I made one of the icicles in red tatting thread with Twilley's
gold Goldfingering for the gimp. Mine was made with the
honeycomb diamonds alternating with spiders like the one
made by Lenore. I will post a photo to the Webshots album
as soon as I can.

I printed off the pattern at 80% - which was just right for that
size thread which I had on some bobbins. I was feeling lazy &
I didn't want to join the pattern up as it went over a page.
I was going to stiffen it but as I decided to give it away to
another Penelope, so it was easier to leave it flat. She is
returning with her husband & daughter to Texas after being
missionaries here in Tartu for the last 2 years.

My next icicle is going to be white with a gold gimp but with
little red beads in the middle of the honeycomb diamonds.

Bev, please post on your blog web-site some photos of the
ornaments that you've been making. I'd love to see them.

Regards from foggy Tartu,
bPene

[lace] Advent Calendar Competition

2006-12-12 Thread Pene Piip

X-Two Penny Blue: capability; stamp

Dear Fellow Arachneans,

Has anyone identified the country where the first stamp comes from?
I hope someone can help me, as I've looked at the following web-sites:

<http://lacestamps.com/>
<http://www.kleinhout.com/gb/index/index.asp>
<http://www.annmcclean.co.uk/LaceStamps/stamps.html>
<http://lace.lacefairy.com/LaceStamps/LaceStamps1.htm>
<http://lace.lacefairy.com/LaceStamps/LaceStamps2.htm>
as well as
<http://dbwebdesign.com/pattyann/lace/stamps/> which is mostly of
Hungarian stamps & that country isn't even one of the countries from
which to choose from.

Please don't tell me the answer, just a hint (or a url) of where I might
see the stamp.
Thanks,
Pene

[lace] Lace Icicles

2006-12-14 Thread Pene Piip

X-Two Penny Blue: capability; stamp

I've put 2 photos on to the Webshots web-site of the icicles that I made
recently.

They are a little bright from the flash. I might try to take some better
photos.

[lace] Santa Claus pattern

2006-12-17 Thread Pene Piip

X-Two Penny Blue: capability; stamp

I was asked today by another Estonian lacemaker if I knew of a pattern for
a Santa Claus, or Father Christmas, bobbin lace pattern. Does anyone know
where such a pattern can be found?

Thanks,
Pene
