Re: [lace] IOLI Bulletin Winter 2019 & Lace magazine news
I have recently signed up for an e-Membership of the Lace guild, and so far so good got the two Lace magazines for the year thus far. And if I get a membership number I will be even more happy. I've just checked the IOLI website and they too have an e-subscription/membership but no indication how one down loads the magazines. Can anyone tell me more about this. I have subscribed to electronic knitting and quilting magazines, they have been really great. I have the patterns accessible wherever I am, I can print out what I need and do not have to worry about physical storage or the vagarities of the postal system. [lace] IOLI Bulletin Winter 2019 & Lace magazine news
I have been remiss in announcing the arrival of the Winter 2019 IOLI Bulletin. I got it a couple weeks ago, accompanied by the annual handbook. Also, on FaceBook, I saw a post by the Lace Guild that the current digital Lace magazine is now available. Better yet, in July of this year, the digital-only Early Days magazine will be available to members for just an additional $5. I've been curious about that publication, thinking it might be a help in teaching kids and newcomers. As for the Bulletin contents: Detailed information about this year's Convention in Spokane Valley, Washington Articles by a couple convention teachers: Karen Thompson (Ipswich lace) and Mimi Dillman (tatting) Memorials for Judy Zeiss and Marion Jones Proficiency Program information Laurie Waters' second article about Learning Needlelace (I've added this to my list of future projects. [lace] IOLI Bulletin and Google Account
I got my paper version of the Bulletin at the weekend. After some nagging from my daughter, I finally decided to open a Google account if I could. Lin, your suggestion of having a separate gmail account for Bulletin access only would not work as the new email would be shown in the Handbook , and not the one I prefer to use. Anyway, I just tried to create a Google account to find that my jblace email is already in there. How did that happen, guess I must have done it years ago and totally forgot about it. I did change my password as suggested by Google. Now I am set up for the next Bulletin online. I presume I will receive an email with a link to the Bulletin when the time comes. I still want the paper version though. I might be back with questions if I can't access it. Sue, No, I doubt that the IOLI will make the handbook available online, even though it would only be accessible by those signed up for the Bulletin. If it can be downloaded, then it could be shared! Devon, This made me chuckle in the last digest, how many hands do you have. I had visions of a lacemaker with three or more hands. That would be helpful at times. Further to Jane's email regarding The Lace Guild electronic membership, e-Lace is not sent as a pdf, there is an e-members only section of the website where the e-magazine is accessed. I would echo Jane's call for patterns, articles, photos etc., etc.; publications can't survive without them. One area we do often have a problem with is items for the Young Lacemaker magazine; while the readers may be young (mostly) they are not necessarily beginners. More challenging patterns with a 'trendy' (or whatever the current terminology is) theme and application are always welcome. Clare (no longer any connection to TLG Exec!) Re: [lace] IOLI Bulletin
We're just in the beginning stages of receiving the journal of the preserved railway where I volunteer in electronic format. What is being done there, and I suspect with The Lace Guild as well, is that the electronic pdf file that is sent to the printers is also the file that is being sent out to members by email. This is most likely the cheapest and simplest way of doing things, for those charitable organisations (like the railway and the Guild) that don't have funding to get an outside specialist company involved. With the railway's journal, being a pdf it gives me the option of using the up/down arrows to move to previous/next page, and typing the page number I want in the box, plus scrolling down (which isn't a great hardship!). The contents page at the start tells me which page I need for a specific article. Also, if I want to look for pieces about, say, a particular loco, I can use the control-f function (keyboard command for "find" - I'm using a Windows 10 laptop and! Adobe Acrobat Reader) to bring up a search box, into which I can type key words. Production of an "all bells and whistles" version would substantially increase the production cost, and would likely require those subscribing to pay more rather than less for their electronic magazine - which would defeat the object of trying to gain overseas members by making it affordable for them to subscribe to (the postal costs for paper copies make them anything but). Do remember that the newstand magazines that have electronic versions with all the navigation options have much larger circulation figures than our specialist magazines, and so have a much greater income to afford the staff and technology required. I'm not sure what the exchange rate is at the moment, but from the figures Susan quotes for the various subscriptions electronic membership of The Lace Guild, at £20.00 (GBP) per year, sounds like a bargain! However, for the magazines to continue in either format, the editors are (usually) dependent on members sending in patterns (for any type of lace, not just bobbin lace) and articles for publication, and the patterns submitted don't have to be as complicated as Miss Channer's mat - one of the reasons I started subscribing to the Canadian Lacemaker Gazette when I was teaching was that their patterns were frequently easy enough for a relative beginner to attempt, and being an affordable subscription, it was a lace publication I could recommend to my students. So many times you hear someone say their reason for not joining the Guild, or submitting a pattern (of their own design) is "I'm not good enough" - which in many cases certainly isn't true. Having patterns for beginners in the magazines is as important as having the more challenging ones for those of us who have been making lace for years, and even more so, if we are to encourage new lacemakers to subscribe in the first pl! ace! Jane Partridge From: owner-l...@arachne.com on behalf of Susan In spite of Prabha’s heroic efforts to provide multiple screen shots, various tutorials, I found my navigation limited to scrolling or typing a page number in the menu bar. Hello All! Thanks Janice & others for your comments. Sorry I can’t answer your questions about Google. The digital edition is a great help for anyone with an overseas mailing address or multiple residences, so I congratulate IOLI leadership for providing this membership option at a very affordable $30. In reference to digitizing our own lace documents, it can be much easier than Lin’s process. There are many smart phone apps that create.pdf’s just by aiming your phone and clicking. I like Scannable and have the free version for iPhone. It straightens the document nicely. Can do separate pages or multiple page documents. Re: [lace] IOLI Bulletin
I’ve been reading the sample digital IOLI bulletin on my tablet (iPad) and am very glad they are offering that option. Tablets work much better for this than computers. The tablets, which originated as readers, automatically size the page so it fills the screen. You can enlarge the page to zoom in on details. I’ve got a number of digital Piecework magazines on my iPad. They have a couple features the Bulletin would benefit from. I can move from page to page by swiping left and the table of contents has links to take you directly to each article. With the Bulletin, it didn’t hold my place when I closed it and I had to page through to find where I left off. Nobody loses. The print edition is still available for those who prefer it. This new feature is a bonus for those of us who prefer it. Re: [lace] lace: IOLI Bulletin
just a thought. i have photographed pages (books and magazines) and then copied them into a Word document. because one can print from a PDF file, i have created them on a free PDF converter program on the internet. now i have digitized the item and can view it on my tablet/phone/computer at any time. i can zoom for viewing and print out from the tablet or cell. you might consider doing this. it is tedious, but i have managed to eliminate a lot of bulk and weight. enjoy. this also works for pages that i need for a project/class/trip when i travel because i can just take it on the tablet or cell and have access without having to remember to "pack" that info. this is helpful for directions (if you don't use a GPS application) too. I, for one, was thrilled to see the IOLI Bulletin being offered in digital version. Like most others I much prefer having a printed version, BUT, we are in the process of downsizing to much smaller space, so I simply do not have enough storage space for all the wonderful Bulletins. I hope at some point in the future the old Bulletins will be digitized, and there will be a nice digital index of articles and patterns, so they can be searched. However, since I am not able to do it, it is just wishful thinking. Re: [lace] IOLI Bulletin - Staying organized
Dear Lacemakers,  Is there a library collection anywhere in the world housing books and publications focused on both embroidery and lace that is more extensive than the one here?  How does that owner feel about this subject ?  In the case of this library in Maine USA, it is preferable to hold a magazine in the hand. The instructions received from the IOLI Bulletin Editor add more complexity, as you will read below.    My lace and embroidery library, now 4,075 books, is probably the most extensive private collection in the world for research on these subjects, especially valuable because the librarian here has read everything in English and is familiar with what else has been saved that is written in other languages. Though periodical publications have not been inventoried, a system recently began of storing bulletins of guilds / publishers (like PieceWork) in plastic bins - by organization. There are also bins holding obsolete publications. Contents are filed by date, with the most current at the top. They have their own designated room.  No one can countermand the owner, who belongs to about 12 guilds just to receive the bulletins (dues are a large expense).   Imagine having different access instructions for each and every item here ! Imagine changes every time editors / officers change and institute their preferences, or constantly having to adapt to new technologies.  When a book or magazine bibliography lists references used, my filing system is easy to use to find originals. Even if I had a volunteer (Ha Ha), there are other tasks of more value to do. An inventory, like the existing one of books, is of considerable value in helping to find the exact book needed. I fail to see the benefit of doing this with periodical publications, given the labor necessary to implement and constantly update. A storage system is the answer here.  Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center -- In a message dated 7/10/2018 9:39:44 PM Eastern Standard Time, jbl...@sbcglobal.net writes: I wrote about IOLI increasing dues to cover mailing and printing costs of the magazine and the new digital version at lower cost. Depending upon the price I will probably pay for both the physical and digital copies for a year. Then I will decide which I prefer. I have a number of hobby books that I have gotten electronically and I like them a lot. I especially like being able to access them on my tablet and the ability to zoom in to a really close view. Several actually have instructional videos imbedded in the book which I love. I did have a digital subscription to a stamp magazine that did not work out as well. When I would try to zoom in to an area that was near the edge of the page the system would turn the page. I changed that to a physical subscription. As the list seems to be quiet, my last digest was #68 on July 1, and I know I sent a lengthy email about convention hoping it might kick out a new digest, I decided to write about the IOLI increasing the dues to cover mailing and printing costs of the magazine and the new digital version at lower cost. I, and all IOLI members with an email address, should have received an email from Prabha Ramakrishnan, the editor recently. Apart from increasing dues, they are making an online version of the Bulletin available at a lower cost or, if paying the full membership dues, you can get both versions. I was able to access the online one in the link from Prabha, but if I decided to go the digital route, I would need to have access through a Google account. I don't have a gmail email, so I am not sure how I would do that. What is a Google Account? I don't want a new email address and the FAQ's say I don't need to do that, but how would I access it? Checking out the magazine online, I think I have decided to pay the full amount when I renew in September as I prefer to have the paper version that I can flip through, leave at the side of my chair so I can pick it up whenever I want to check something. I don't like the fact that I can't read the screen if I am looking at the full pag! e of the magazine, and on my laptop I need to zoom in to read the details, and then I have to move the screen up and down. This is the system IOLI had before it was changed to the current one over 10 years ago. The problems with a single renewal date are (A) having to estimate how many extra magazines to have printed to allow for new members joining during the year, (B) finding somewhere to store all these extra magazines, (C) the extra postage costs for sending out additional magazines (not something you can pass on to a new member). I have just sent in my renewal and am arranging to get the missing issues since my membership expired. (Jacquie note - you will also be getting all the back issues too). I have a feeling that I might have had an e-mail reminding me, but I'm not sure. Perhaps IOLI should look at the system The Lace Guild uses. The renewals are sent out once a year, in the magazine and the payment is for the next four issues. It means everyone is on the same renewal date and if you join mid year you get the back issues plus those still to come for that year. I think The Lace Society uses the same method. [lace] IOLI Bulletin
I'm still waiting for my Bulletin but my husband seems more anxious than I am.  Every day he announces "no magazine again" when he goes to collect our mail.  I saw the cover on the IOLI Facebook page so I know it is on its way. Thanks Liz for your comments. The cover piece was a technical entry so had to be made from someone else's pattern.  I saw the sunflower in the Lace Express in the early 2000's.  I had a friend who has every copy of Lace Express track it down for me.  Because of size constraints I had to reduce the pattern by 50% and changed the thread so it would work.  The hardest part was trying to make all those leaf tallies consistent in size.  I was so pleased that it received the Popular Vote as well.  That is always a compliment from contemporaries. Hope the Bulletin comes soon.  Maybe I will get to see it on Saturday when I attend the Freeway Lace Day in Torrance.Janice  Janice Blair Murrieta, CA, www.jblace.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] IOLI Bulletin
Thank you, Pene, for the update. Everyone loves to receive a lace bulletin, and sometimes they do not realize how much goes into getting one into members' mailboxes. It is unfortunate that our Lace Guilds must rely on unpaid volunteer editors, who probably do not receive nearly enough appreciation. The job of publishing 4 bulletins a year happens to require an enormous amount of personal time and devotion to lace. Editors need help. So do proofreaders. A representative of one overseas national Guild has told me they have 3 proofreaders who read the entire contents of a bulletin from cover-to-cover before it is sent to the printer! Sometimes, our editors are juggling careers that pay bills, as well as keeping a spouse and family happy, and home running smoothly. They really need tangible support to stay healthy and strong. I have written about the unpaid efforts of our remarkable lace women before. When they volunteer, it would be nice to have someone in the local lace group who lives nearby volunteer to help with errands and the time-consuming extras (taking the family dog to the vet, picking up dry cleaning and the like, waiting for a car to be serviced, etc). Can we help them out a bit, if we live near them? Thinking back to my years of working at a newspaper over 50 years ago, I recall that I was required to read other daily newspapers as well as our own. This brought forward items of interest that our newspaper had not covered but might be of interest to our department's student readers aged 13-18. Lace editors need time to "take our pulse". One Bulletin Editor personally contacted me, and I learned she was aware of contents of Arachne. She somehow found time to glance past any "me too" memos on Arachne and take note of what lace people around the world were finding of interest. This is something for our various national and international Guild leaders to ponder. I hope they have good backup plans for Bulletin Editors, who are human like the rest of us and need support so they won't "burn out". [lace] IOLI Bulletin, Spring 2014, Bibliography Corrections
There must be hundreds of American subscribers to Arachne who belong to IOLI. I don't know, because there are so many lurkers, who do not write, respond, or even ask questions. They do not seem to know that printed material presented on Arachne and in our various Guild publications is a gift. It is important that Lace Bulletins be useful far into the future for researchers. Researchers need to consult primary sources - original books being of most importance. It is not wise to reuse a Bibliography that someone else compiled without verifying it is correct! There are other interesting subjects. If we do not make it easy to do research, Lace will not be researched! You may wish to add the following notes to your copies of the IOLI Spring 2014 Bulletin AND to your local Lace group's copies, so that if they fall into the hands of future Lace scholars, the information will be easier to use. These notes only relate to books referenced in Bibliographies at the end of articles in the IOLI Bulletin, Volume 34, Number 3 (Photo of South American nun on the cover). 1. Page 15 - Ruth Bean's 1983 edition of Le Pompe should read ISBN 0 903585 16 2. The 2 is missing. You might like to add after Book 1 ", plus selected pages from Book 2." 2. Page 15 - Burkard entry is OK. Might add "One of 3 books in a boxed set." 3. Page 15 - Levey's Victoria and Albert book reference is OK. 4. Page 15 - Dye's book entry may need correction: ISBN is printed in book as 978 0 9553223 5 8, but as 3 4 (at the end) in IOLI Bulletin. Publisher Jean Leader has been consulted. She says Gil Dye will probably issue an Errata (correction to be appended to a book or books) for Books 2 and 3 in this series. That means maybe the IOLI Bulletin's ISBN number is OK. These are two very busy lace experts who can always be relied on to set things right. (You might like to add ", p. 34" at the end for the frogging reference.) 5. Page 20 - For "Lessons in Bobbin Lacemaking", there is room to write "Dover edition; originally Scribner's" vertically in the white space of fold. (Original publisher was Scribner's in both hard back and soft cover editions, and title was different: "Bobbin Lacemaking". Contents of all 3 versions is the same.) 6. Page 21 - Authors of "Bobbin Lace of Peniche" are Janne L. G. Hill and Graça Maria Ramos. Cross out Barbara Fay as author. Fay is the publisher, and a book dealer in Germany. There is white vertical space to make the correction. 7. Page 23 - First book's author is Therle Hughes, not Hughs (famous in the antiques world). 8. Page 23 - Last book's title should be RSN Stumpwork (for Royal School of Needlework), not RNS Stumpwork. [lace] IOLI Bulletin/convention
Hi lacemakers, I finally got my Bulletin this week after hearing my friends already had theirs last week. There are more photos of the poppy project in it and an article by Devon on her trip to Sansepolcro. Wish she had taken me along. Louise Colgan who taught at the Australian Lace Guild National Conference last year has written an article about it. I hope to be able to sit down soon and read everything in detail. I also want to take this opportunity to mention the upcoming IOLI convention, and I hope I don't offend anyone by this. Some classes are already filled to capacity, such as those taught by Louise Colgan, Ulrike Voelker, and Allie Marguccio but we still have some spaces with Anny Noben Slegers, Jean Leader, Holly van Sciver and many other teachers. Don't think you are too late in registering as I am sure Brenda Glenn, Registrar, will be able to place you in a class, and maybe one that you might have thought was already filled. Please note that Brenda's email address on the form was wrong. She is with Comcast, not Camcost. Most people in the US know that Comcast is a national carrier, but there might be areas where people have never heard of it. For those of you who are waiting anxiously to know what your classes are, we are still working hard on placements. If your check has been cashed, you know that it was received by Brenda. Unlike previous conventions where the checks were not deposited for a considerable length of time, now that IOLI is a co-host, the checks were sent to the Treasurer within a week or two. If your check has not been cashed, email Brenda to check that she received it at busybe...@comcast.net we know that a few applications have gone astray in the mail. [lace] IOLI Bulletin-kudos
I guess I am the last person to read the IOLI Bulletin. I was away for a week when it came and didn't get back to it for a while. And to be very honest, it takes a long time to read the Bulletin these days because it is chock full of stuff. I was sorry to see that Tamara Duvall is no longer to be Bobbin Lace Editor. However, her last column before becoming an "occasional contributor" was a very interesting one. Personally, I rather like the effect produced by diagram 1 a, even though I think it is not Tamara's first choice. Many thanks to Gil Dye who is pursuing the bobbin lace interpretations of reticella like patterns. I had a few Eureka moments as I read her piece on bobbin interpretations of reticella patterns. Congratulations to Kim Davis, as well. Bulletin Editor Cynthia Tiger has prevailed on Kim to write a series of three articles about Larry's lace, a collection that Kim has encountered in California. It is amazes me. when I read this article, to realize how much work has gone into it. It combines historical research into different pieces of lace and how they have materialized in US collections, with analysis of the technique, including the sourcing of hand spun linen! I am quite enthralled with the observation she has made of a toothy edge construction and am now examining every old bobbin lace I see for this toothy edge. Then, Kim has taken the basic idea of the old lace and created a piece of wire lace jewelry from it. I find it very exciting and encouraging to see new talent emerging to fill the Bulletin pages! I will now report that I have almost read all the Bulletin and have only to decide which classes and tours I want this summer. I was not in such a hurry to see the offerings as in past years as I was able to view the class choices at the Portland Lace Society website over the last few months. Nice to see that they are arranging an Arachne luncheon this year so we will all be able to meet up again. Go here and choose the IOLI Convention, then Classes and you will be able to see photos of some of the laces being offered. I also noticed that the mailing date is February 1, so better make some decisions soon. http://portlandlacesociety.net/convention.html Cindy did a nice job again with the Bulletin. There are articles by other Arachne including Liz Ligeti in Australia, Tamara Duvall, and I even spotted a book review from Pene Piip. Lots of nice needlelace info for me. O.K., Gentle Spiders, If the Arachne (or IOLI) Police object to this postingwell... My Fall 2007 issue arrived yesterday and since we were away all day, I didn't get to open it until bedtime. It is a super, interesting issue and I read it until the wee hours. I won't divulge any contents, but those who haven't gotten it can look forward to a complete Convention report plus much additional stuff. I didn't get to Tulsa this year due to FH Clive's daily radiation treatments, so I especially enjoyed that segment. Congratulations to all the editors for a job well done. Thank you. Hi everyone I feel I should speak up - I also receive the IOLI bulletin, plus other lace periodicals and like each of them for their various perspectives. I have much respect for the lace magazine editor, being one myself :) The rewards are priceless for anyone volunteering in this capacity, then so there are expenditures - often we go out of pocket and time for our cherished commitment. At times we have to accept something less than perfect to keep within the publishing budget. I count a lot on the goodwill and patience of the lace magazine subscribers. I think, yes, the IOLI bulletin is certainly as good as any at this time - but that opinion shouldn't diminish the efforts of editors-past. Gentle Spiders, Mine came today, no joke (despite the date). Excellent timing, since I just finished reading the Canadian Lace Gazette this morning (reading lace-related publications before breakfast is my equivalent of a "cup of cofee to get me going before I brave the world at large"), and am now looking forward to tomorrow. I haven't _read_ anything as yet, but, flipping through, noticed several pages devoted to "Patchwork Lace" (also known as "Normandy Lace"), which I'm glad to see; not my cup o'T precisely, since I'm not overfond of needles as lace tools, but interesting. And Devon Thein has an article, as usual, but has taken a break from scouring museums, and writes about her experiences and experiments in Wire Lace instead. Which is fine with me -- Devon's sense of humour is delightful no matter what subject she picks, and I'm looking forward _greatly_ to reading that article, which, I hope, will be full of trials and tribulations gently ridiculed. But, the greatest and most immediate pleasure came from seeing -- in an article titled "Lace Making Fairs in Catalonia (Spain)" -- a photo of Carolina de la Guardia Gallego at her witch-stitch lace. Nice to "meet" you at long last, Carolina :) For those who have not yet seen Carolina's new designs in old "witch stitch lace", here's her second book, with links to the first and other goodies: http://www.geocities.com/carolgallego/brujoeng2.html -- Tamara P Duvallhttp://t-n-lace.net/ Lexington, Virginia, USA (Formerly of Warsaw, Poland) - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

At 10:41 PM 1/11/06 -0500, Tamara P Duvall wrote: > What's the difference between a > "blanket" stitch and a "buttonhole" one? Nancy Evans (Needle Lace With > Nancy), on p 11, says: > "[...] begin blanket (often wrongly called buttonhole) stitching > tightly [...]" The "often wrongly called" is your clue: certain embroiders want to use "blanket stitch" for all forms of buttonhole, in order to reserve "buttonhole" for what we've always called "tailor's buttonhole" (buttonhole stitch with an extra twist, suitable for buttonholes on heavy fabrics such as coating.) They aren't getting very far -- partly because of the tremendous inertia of bushels of reference materials that use the older terms, and partly -- I suspect -- because "blanket stitch" sounds as though it ought to be coarse enough to work on the edge of a blanket, and sounds funny as a description of buttonholing. It's more plausible to refer to blanket stitch as "Spaced Buttonhole" than to call buttonhole a closely-worked blanket stitch. Enthoven (The Stitches of Creative Embroidery) refers to "Spaced buttonhole, also known as blanket stitch", and doesn't, as near as I can tell without re-reading the whole book, mention tailor's buttonhole at all. Mary Thomas's Dictionary of Embroidery Stitches describes tailor's buttonhole in great detail, then ends cryptically "When used for actual buttonholes on tailor-made garments, the process of working is reversed." without saying *what* is reversed. I suppose she was only heading off those who would be confused by a different description in a tailoring book; teaching the making of buttonholes is outside the scope of a dictionary of embroidery stitches. She does strongly imply that tailor's buttonhole can, or should, be worked only on edges. (We just hashed this out on 18th-Century Woman, if you're wondering why I had references at my fingertips.) -- Joy Beeson http://home.earthlink.net/~joybeeson/ http://home.earthlink.net/~dbeeson594/ROUGHSEW/ROUGH.HTM http://home.earthlink.net/~beeson_n3f/ -- Writers' Exchange http://www.timeswrsw.com/craig/cam/ (local weather) west of Fort Wayne, Indiana, U.S.A. where it's sunny and the high is FIFTY-THREE F! She devotes several pages (with illustrations) to the difference between blanket stitches (used in Hardanger edgings, among other applications) and buttonhole stitches, which actually get a knot at the fabric edge of each stitch. Impossible to describe in words, unfortunately. If you know anyone who does embroidery, or are near an embroidery guild, you might be able to take a look at this book--pages 38 and 42. [lace] IOLI Bulletin - question
Gentle Spiders, I've finally got around to reading the whole Bulletin; being obsessive-compulsive, I read everything, whether it's "my" technique or not. As usual, the highlight was Devon's article (in my next life, I want to have her -- sly and quiet -- sense of humour ), though I think the entire Bulletin keeps improving; the other articles (Miro and Eurell) were "classy" also. I have a question (stemming from my obsessive curiosity and reading material not really "suitable")... What's the difference between a "blanket" stitch and a "buttonhole" one? Nancy Evans (Needle Lace With Nancy), on p 11, says: "[...] begin blanket (often wrongly called buttonhole) stitching tightly [...]" Before I got a sewing machine which makes buttonhole-making a snap (well... most of them ), I made buttonholes by hand for years and years. And I often finished inner seams -- also by hand -- in what I think of as "blanket stitch". But to me, _the only difference_ was that buttonhole stitches were laid closely together, while the blanket ones were spaced out further apart. That seems not to be the case, if blanket stitches are to be stitched "tightly"... All of the talk of the new IOLI Bulletin got me to thinking that I hadn't received one in quite some time, so I started doing some checking. Gentle Spiders, My own issue - all pages present and correct - arrived yesterday (and how Debra manages for people in US, and Europe, and Oz, to get it on the same day is a major miracle to me ). Same day as the Canadian Lacemaking Gazette (my renewal check went off today, Bev), so there was a lot of reading this morning, and I've only gone through half of the Bulletin (but made sure Devon's article was in the "read half"; her writing is what makes my day bright... Crab cakes, indeed ). And Trenna Ruffners article (on how she got out from having to make a wedding hankie, but ended up doing twice the work in the form of a wedding fan) was more amusing than usual. And Debra has done a spectacular job of putting everything together - as usual. We are very lucky indeed, to have her do all that donkey's work "for the love of lace", and I dread the day she decides she's "burnt out", and refuses to continue as the Editor. Which is why I want to remind everyone that any lace magazine, however splendiferous and inventive its Editor, depends on "general populace" for *contents* - patterns, articles, ads, announcements... Our previous long-term Editor - Julie - was very good too, but didn't get enough serious support; there were times when she was so "starved" for material, she had to cut the number of pages of the Bulletin. The (volunteer) Editor is only as good as her (volunteer) contributors are; she puts the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle together, but its us who have to give her the pieces to play around with. So if you have an idea - for an article or a pattern, or even a photo - don't be shy. Clean it up as much as you can, and submit it. All of us will enjoy it, and it'll go some distance towards keeping the Editor from getting frazzled and quitting :) -- Tamara P Duvallhttp://t-n-lace.net/ Lexington, Virginia, USA (Formerly of Warsaw, Poland) - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thank you Jeri, for pronouncing the Summer 2005 Bulletin a collector's item. I agree. There is no catalogue of the Cone Collection exhibit and if the curator, herself, does not write an article about it, as we hope she will, it may be the most permanent memorial to the exhibit. Knowing there would be no catalogue, I suggested we print extra copies, but that is not possible due to the terms under which we publish. (Perhaps we will all get rich selling our copies on ebay some day.) Debra Jenny is to be congratulated on her editorship. I had to laugh when Jean said that she wasn't sure if the editor was also the person in charge of sending out the Bulletin. It would seem reasonable to think that there might be a staff of more than one producing such a publication, but the IOLI Bulletin is pretty much a one-woman production with Debra doing everything. It is certainly a monumental job. Thanks are also due to the Baltimore Museum of Art for their generosity with the photography and helpfulness during the production of the article. Greetings Ilske I've just received my Summer IOLI bulletin, but there's a problem with it - I've got pages 1 - 8 twice and pages 25-32 twice, with pages 9 - 24 missing. Is there someone I can contact by email to get a replacement? [lace] IOLI Bulletin problem (2)
I got an instant email response direct from Debra, who is sending me another copy of the bulletin. The reason I asked who to contact was because I wasn't sure who actually arranged to post the bulletins - it might not have been the editor herself. Thanks to those who told me how to contact her. As usual, an immediate response from Arachneans with the right information. If you have kept past issues, you will see: www.internationaloldlacers.org If you go to the web page, you will find *IOLI Bulletin* as a choice about half way down the menu on the left. And when you go to this page, you will find the address to click on to write to the editor. It is a lot easier (to me) than looking up eBay listings, and searching for other sorts of information on the internet! Debra is one of the nicest and most reliable officials at IOLI. She will be horrified that there has been an error at the printer's.
