[lace] Thank you Jeri
Like others, I'm guilty of lurking, so (fingers crossed that I don't initiate any more flames) . A huge thank you to Jeri for her many, many, interesting contributions. I might not always have read them, but I certainly appreciate them!! Am I being too honest? But I am in awe of the knowledge that goes in to them and the time and skill taken to write them. And I definitely appreciated the link to the National Trust bulletin. I've been a member of the National Trust for 20 years - and have not seen this bulletin before! Not just me, DH didn't know about it either. So thank you Jeri, for pointing us to it. I'm mystified by some of the emails appearing in the Digest, we seem to hear only half the discussion, and what we do see is very odd. Why would anyone want to vilify another lace maker? We all make mistakes, but that is no reason for personal attacks. Are we sure we haven't acquired a troll? I hope I haven't said the wrong thing. I usually keep my head down when there is any 'argumentation'. 'Least said soonest mended' as my Gran used to say. It is all so sad and unnecessary, and we've lost so many good people over the years because of a few bad words. I understand that Jeri's departure is for technical reasons (aol vs majordomo). As Elizabeth said, the digest version contains all Jeri's emails, so, respectfully, could Jeri continue posting while others switch to the digest version of arachne? Hi I am just back from holiday and would like to thank everyone for the support shown to me and explain whilst I am not hosting the Christmas Card Exchange this year, I have not declined to do the exchange , This year I have not had the option, Lin jumped in with both feet and pulled the rug from under me . Whilst I know it should not be taken for granted I do the exchange it would have nice to receive a mail from Lin , But I had to read like everyone else. Which is not nice. Last Year was the best year ever 122 cards, This is my first post on the matter after I have just arrived back from holiday . I just wanted to put my side of the story forward. Once again take care Janet. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. For help, write to arachne.modera...@gmail.com. [lace] Thank You for Documenting the 2017 IOLI Convention, Philadelphia
To all who have shared experiences and many photos of the 2017 I nternational Organization of Lace convention - a huge thank you. There is no doubt but what this has been the most documented lace convention ever, and that your "contributions" are now in permanent places where people can read them for many decades to come. You have established a standard to follow in coming years. Just as we are interested in lace history of the first quarter of the 20th century (1900 through1925), this is exactly what we need to do every year, so that future generations can learn what we have been doing in the first quarter of the 21st century. You have confirmed that ace is not a dead art. You have contributed to lace history, which is primarily the history of women, and that is a very good thing. Dear Knowledgeable Ones, I daresay we are all learning things we didn't know about mounting lace! You've convinced me I do need to spend the time to actually sew the lace onto suitable fabric, and to use archival materials, and to not let lace touch the glass! 2 big thank yous - one to Gon for her patterns each week, - and the new site is good - especially to download a pattern. Hi I have been inundated with useful suggestions on how to use continental bobbins and alternative ways of making lace. I have replied privately to most people but want to apologise if I have missed any one. I have been surprised to see my book mentioned on Arachne lately. There is such a wealth of lace books now I am astonished that anyone would still use mine. It is hard probably for younger lacemakers to imagine what it was like when I was looking for help to learn bobbin lace. I had learned to crochet, knit, tat and sew my own clothes all from books. I had been a handweaver for some time and I did attend classes for help with weaving. But when I looked for answers about bobbin lace they were hard to come by. Now one only has to choose among a host of available books. I can no longer make lace myself - I have only a fumbly grip between thumb and forefinger which makes is very hard to set pins. But I am constantly pleased to hear what is going on in the lace world A few old lace friends keep in touch and then there is Arachne! It is a totally different world from the time when I was eagerly looking for answers. I am so pleased to have been a part of it. What a wonderful group this is! I heard back from a number of you about my troubles starting my Torchon fan pattern, including some who have the book/cd, with suggestions for me. I can't tell you how overwhelmed I am by the kindness of strangers out there. I look forward to some quiet time one evening this week, when I can sit with printed out emails and my lace pillow and try to get myself going with this piece. I am in Central New Jersey, in the US. I know there are some lace groups way north of me (have traveled to their lace days for the sake of vendors), but know of nothing down in my area. RE: [lace] Thank you everybody (couching brides)
So, in doing reticello or similar types of needle lace, is couching the brides "normal" or am I doing it wrong? I've dabbled in an assortment of needle laces. My impression is that the "free" shapes are generally couched down, because the shape must be maintained. The "embedded" laces, such as reticella and the other removed-thread (I refuse to re-kindle the "drawn/pulled" fire) laces are, at least in modern times, often put into a frame such as stretcher bars. This maintains the woven surrounding threads in their proper positions. Robin P. So, in doing reticello or similar types of needle lace, is couching the brides "normal" or am I doing it wrong? Thank you so much for your patience in reading through this whole missive. Bronwen That's a very provocative question? Firstly, anything that makes the lace more beautiful is good. If you second attempt brought you closer to the result you wish, then you are on the right track. What works, works! Now, I have not done a huge amount of needle lace, but step one is "couching the outline". Then the fillings are worked between the outlines, and finally the edges are worked, with the possible addition of picots and other adornments. Large laces are made of multiple motifs connected by brides which are worked like the edges of motifs. The outline has to be supported until the lace is completed, then the lace is released from the couching and what you have is an unattached threadwork, rather than an embroidery. Personally, I don't get too hung up in terminology because the transition from drawn thread work to true needlelace was gradual and stepwise. Eventually, it just didn't make sense anymore to first un-weave the fabric to have a hole to put the lace in. (Especially since the thread was hand spun and then hand woven!) [lace] Thank you everybody
I received many wonderful responses from the list. Thank you all for taking the time to answer me! Mostly I was given the advice to ask questions, so I will. Good thing I'm not shy, right? A little background info, first: About 4 years ago, I had the chance to learn pulled thread embroidery, with the idea that I would be able to continue on to learn reticello, punta in aria, and other needle laces. This was a lovely idea, unfortunately, it fell apart in the implementation. Right after I had the basics (preparing the cloth, pulling the threads, wrapping the warp and weft left in, doing some very basic embellishments like spiders) I moved from North Carolina to Colorado. From what I can tell, in my regional group, there are some very wonderful bobbin lacers around, but I was the first to work pulled thread embroidery and then to start teaching myself reticello. I have yet to move on to punta in aria. I have been reading websites, and what books I could find, and they are nice, but I learn best from seeing something done. All this is to say: I was having trouble with tension. My very first reticello-like design (taken from a pattern book from the 1500's) came out looking nothing at all like it was supposed to look. The second piece, I couched the brides down to the paper, and the lace came out ... well, not perfect, I have a long way to go, but looking like the design should look. So, in doing reticello or similar types of needle lace, is couching the brides "normal" or am I doing it wrong? Thank you so much for your patience in reading through this whole missive. Today I was so excited to get a postcard with superb photos of Antique Downton bobbins. One showed clearly that the decorators of East Devon bobbins (Honiton) used the same decorator. To me, that is exciting! Please continue with your generous donations of pictures of antique bobbins. I probably need particularly the USA "Ipswich" bobbins. I have barely two of these. Malmsbury bobbins would be good too. I have possibly 5 pictures of these, thought they are not madly exciting (at least the ones I have.) More decorated Downtons would be great too. Thanks for the information, Sister Claire. I give tours at the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is an important historical building in the Twin Cities and the first basilica in the United States. We have visitors from all over the world. When the dome needed to be replaced a little over ten years ago, more than half of the donations came from civic minded folks who did not attend that church (many not even Christian) who felt that such a historic site was well worth preserving. Anyway, we have statutes of both Saint Anthony and Saint Teresa. Now I have something more to add to my tours. (Nothing like a little additional nickel knowledge.) Dear Arachnids Thank you to all who replied regarding owners of the lace I wanted to trace. I followed up all the leads but unfortunately with no results. However, the lace was made a long time ago and the makers now deceased so, although I would have liked to ask permission, it is legal for me to use them. The pictures of two of them are now on our website http//web.mac.com/jeanmaryeke together with the first instalment of the story of the 'Greek Gods!'. It doesn't say to do this in the instructions I am following at present, but I keep feeling I should. What do you suggest? I was taught to put an extra twist at the end because "it's stronger". Not entirely sure what that means, but that's what I usually do. If you use midlands bobbins (and have a nice variety on the pillow), watch and you will see that CT ends the row with the worker bobbin at the outside. For the return journey, you have a different worker bobbin, the one that ended up mated to the worker at the end of the row. An extra twist (or any even number of twists total) keeps the same bobbin as the worker all the way through. Knowing this, you can decide for yourself. An even number of twists at the ends means one bobbin uses up a lot more thread than the others; the same color (if you're using multiple colors) does all the horizontal rows of the trail; and it may be more durable. An odd number of twists means the work (hence, the use of thread) is spread among bobbins; the color of the horizontal varies; and it may be less durable. If color is not an issue, you can put the extra twist on the ends for strength, but leave it off to exchange workers, if the worker is running low on thread and you want to conserve it. Robin P. Re: [lace] Thank you.../half-stitch edge
The extra twist enhances the edge, too. For the firmest edge, although a bit bulky, work CTCT, pin, CTCTT (the extra T, to keep the same weaver bobbin). Where you want to vary the weaver bobbin, e.g. if thread is running out, omit the extra T. It really is a big help to know you are all there for me. I Robin, I appreciate you reminding me of the stitches I need, it's amazing how even the very basics become "uncertain" after five years. Fortunately I have some basic beginners books and Cooks "Practical skills in bobbin lace" I originally taught myself from books and still have them. Unfortunately I don't have the Springetts books, I'll look out for them if I can get to a lace fayre anytime soon. Agnes, thank you for the website Url, strangely a few days ago I was looking for pictures of Rosalibre mentioned on the list - (new to me) - got sidetracked as you do and found that very site! Needless to say I bookmarked it straight away :) Carole, I checked in my book, "The bobbin lace manual" by Stott, and it calls pattern 14 "Running river" and it is a Beds pattern. Could two patterns have the same name? Has anyone else heard of these patterns? To all, Thank you so much to everyone who responded to my request for help. I now have two very simple patterns to work with. I will be using the toilet paper rolls since both will fit on the roll. My first lace teacher, Gunvor Jorgenson, was the lady who showed me the toilet paper roll technique. Twelve years later I now have 6 different pillows and lots of projects in mind, so wasn't discouraged at all. The roll wrapped in paper is placed in a simple basket which can be purchased in the local dollar store along with the thin rubber mat used to keep items from sliding around in a draw. I have enough bobbins and pins to loan out for one or two classes. If the ladies would like to continue on after that, they can order whatever they need from one of our many suppliers with websites. Thank you all for the warm welcome. I indeed know that lace is just as addictive as knitting, crochet , etc, etc, I went, this morning to the Lace Museum. I was the only one there and had the docent just to myself. It was just great. She took me from piece to piece and told me the story of it and the furniture they have and how the obtain them. They have a very large knitted lace displayed and I open my mouth and said "Oh that is knittwd, it is fairly easy to do. She laugh and laugh and told me I would fit just right in and get hooked on the bobbins. It was all I could do not to buy the store. I still had a grain of restrain and decide to pay the rent first, then buy the store. Who need to eat,, right!!!. I will have my first class on Thursday night from 7-p PM. The teacher is E. Schartz. Name is very familiar. I will try to remember why. I check all these nice sites and the french one is really interresting. Thanks Tamara, Brenda, Carolina and others for all your help - I'm going to have to experiment with wrapping as I haven't tried that yet and it is obviously very helpful in a situation such as this. Very unscientifically, I had thought of using Coats #30 crochet cotton which is 22 wraps - well it looked to be about right . Since I have this galore, and in the right colours too, and I don't have #12 perle cotton in any useful (for this) colours, and time is of the essence with Hallowe'en a week away, I hope it'll work. Since crochet cotton is smoother than perle, I thought one extra wrap would be ok - do someone let me know if that doesn't make sense and one wrap really makes a difference in this type of project. Of course I have #8 perle cotton in the right colours...but separating the plies is probably a dumb idea, and I don't want to scale up the pricking as it would come out coarser. Although...if I were to do so, the #12 is 21 wraps and the #8 is 16 wraps - does that mean I'd increase it by 25% (or whatever that is in area)? p.s. thanks also for the link to Jean Goldberg's needlelace - I don't do needle lace and that site is incredible - and incredibly inspiring. Hi Jeri, Tamara and All, I appreciate everyone's posts! But I do love the long ones with such good information. Jeri, threading the needle as the thread comes off the spool had never occurred to me. It must be the same for Pearl Cotton too and I noticed on a large project that sometimes the thread when wound over another thread would snuggle in together and other times one laid on top of the other. Finally I started threading my needle with the thread in the same direction and that took care of the problem! Now I know why and will be more careful about that in the future. I also love reports on classes and the Liers class sounds fabulous!! I will look for Greet's book in Denver. I think she was the teacher, one of two on stage with the Amish magician in Harrisburg, who moved the knot on the rope during one trick. The knot was supposedly in the rope (that was the trick) but it actually was separate. The magician was briefly nonplused but then had lots of fun with Greet . I also hope people don't feel bad that they can't go to these events. After reading about so many classes on arachne I finally realized I could go sometimes and it has been wonderful fun at every one!! I also love reading about the museum exhibits all over the world and all the other lace news. Right now I'm not able to go to the museums but maybe in the future!! And looking at websites is a lot of fun too! Jane in Vermont, USA where it cooled off to the mid-70s F (24C) today from the low 90s F (33C) yesterday - whew! Hi in Lacingland, First of all I want to thank Nicky for letting me win the pair of Maltese bobbins that I recieved in the mail today...which I might add it is freezing here in New York, USA...so it was a running trip to the mailbox and then back into my house where though the thermostat says close to 80F in here I am still freezing...I think it is a mind thing... Since I now have this pair of bobbins a thought occurred to me...I don't think I have run across any patterns for Maltese lace. Have I been blind or what...did I miss something over the past few years I will say this though...when I was in Ithaca there was a woman that sat at my table during the banquet...I believe she was from Vermont(Tamara may know) anyhow...she had on I believe was a Maltese collar to show off something in lace on her person. The collar was very pretty!! And it was done in off white thread which I believe was made in a medium weight kind of lacing thread. There were alot of clunnies ( which I think Maltese lace has...good practice for someone like me) anyhow...THE QUESTION ( yup it is coming)...are there Maltese Lace patterns out there in Lacingland somewhere and where is that I wonder. Good Morning/Evening (depending on where you are in the world) Thank you to everyone who answered my first posting to the arachne sites. You have helped me alot! Special thanks to Tamara, Jeri, and Diana. I was working on what I think to be torchon lace and putting my pins in after CTCT. When I went to tension the work it, of course, pulled up on me and I would have to stretch it back out. I was only using 30 pins in the whole work! No wonder I was having problems. Out to get more pins today! I have no real teacher here near me, so I purchased the Lacis teach yourself kit. It came with what looks like size 60 or 80 thread, but the fan design I was working on was much to loose for this size thread (not enough knots in my opinion). I'm going to try again with a size 20 perle cotton. Thank you for the advice on silk. I'll patiently wait until I'm good enough to try it. I also understand the difference now between the two groups at arachne. Not being one to stay silent when I have an opinion , here is a book I would recommend.
