Re: [LegacyUG] Can't see all the screen

2007-09-07 Thread June
Despite checking on the Error Description on the website it still hasn't
changed things. I still can't see the bottom of the screen or the right hand
side. When I went to change a colour background (just in the hope that that
would help) I couldn't see the bottom of the screen so couldn't even see
which button to press to 'save'.

I can mimise the screen by grabbing hold of the corners or the side panels
but the ratio remains the same - what is inside is too big for the size of
the screen. The text size looks fine, it seems to be the boxes.

Any further suggestions would be appreciated. Currently I can't use the
programme.

Thank you

June

Renee,

Unfortunately the "it would require a complete program rewrite" has
become the standard mantra for the Millennia folks. They want to stay
competitive, but they refuse to offer any of the features that their
competition does offer. Both TMG and Genbox offer a witness feature.
Genbox is able to handle same sex relationships, both offer outstanding
charts and reports.

Don't hold your breath waiting for anything innovative from Millennia
because it will require a complete program re-write. Search the
archives and see how many times that mantra has been chanted.

Joe:

By developing a program for genealogists only, as was recommended/advocated
by Bill Anderson, Millenia would be catering to the people who have a very
restricted view of what should be included - no adopted children, no gays,
etc. These are the people I call the purists.

However, I believe that most people are inclusive and want to include
everybody -and I mean everybody - in their family. If Millenia continues to
stall about making modifications to include gays, they will lose these
customers and Legacy eventually will become nothing more than a niche
product. This is a poor business strategy.

Personally, I have come to believe Millenia will never make the necessary
modifications. This obstinance has not had much of an impact on me so I will

continue to use Legacy because it is a very good program. I hope that
doesn't change.

If Millenia wants to survive as a company, it must go the Family History
route. A Family History program can be used by everybody, including the
purists; a Genealogy program can only be used by the purists. They would be
foolish to limit their market any way.

Leaving aside the discussions on the morality of homosexuality, which are
immaterial to how such relationships (which exist) should be recorded, there

is
a more fundamental point raised.

Should Legacy be developed along the lines of a Family History (FH) program
or a
Genealogical (Gen) program?

My gut feel is that the 'FH' route will be much more complex with the
associated
development and maintenance costs and greater learning curve - and a higher
price tag!

There are many 'Gen' fixes and enhancements which we have already requested
and
which could fall by the wayside if the 'FH' side is developed.

It might be a good idea to let Geoff get a feel for the direction that the
majority of his user community would like to see developed (even if it

What do others think?

2007-09-07 Thread Dawn Crowley

Legacy can handle these relationships. It is quite flexible. For example:

On the family, pedigree, descendant, or index tab:
right click to add a spouse (even if one is already listed)
right click to view the spouse list, children list, parents list, &
siblings list

On the family tab in the blank area outside the individual's box:
click to toggle between spouses

On the family tab in the blank spot between a couple's individual boxes:
click to toggle between the highlighted individual's siblings

On the family tab:
right click on a child to opt to view 1/2 children
right click on a child to choose children's settings; then select
adopted, etc from the list or add your own setting
right click on a child to choose relationship to mother and/or
relationship to father; add your own setting

There are also options to choose which line to show, etc.

I use Legacy because I want to trace my blood line
back as far as I can. I could care less about family
history or some odd relationship between two people of
the same sex. So far, I have not found one homosexual
relationship in my family going back to 1800. Maybe
this is because my family is made up of Christians,
and we honor our Lord. If I did ever find someone,
who is homosexual, in my family, their partner or
friend would not be included in with my genealogy.
They cannot create children and therefore are
irrelevant. I think all the homosexuals should get
together and create their own program. If Legacy
turns out to favor special interest groups, such as
gays, I will go elsewhere to continue with my
genealogy. I don't want anyone answering my e-mail
because this is MY opinion and there doesn't need to
be any discussion.

Sorry Ralf, for some reason Outlook shoved the two file names together. It
should have read:

ms00175 - SMITH, John (1884-1919) baptism registration [RIN9].tif

ms00200 - SMITH, John (1884-1919), DOE, Jane (1886-1930) marriage
registration [RIN9], [RIN43].tif

Apparently not my night!

Hi Ralf:

My naming system is pretty simple (too simple apparently - OW!). But a "new
and improved" example of a file description is below:

ms00175 - SMITH, John (1884-1919) baptism registration [RIN9].tif ms00200 -
SMITH, John (1884-1919), DOE, Jane (1886-1930) marriage registration [RIN9],
[RIN43].tif

I wanted something descriptive (name, lifespan, and document type), that
contained the Master Source ID#, and the person's RIN# all for searching. I
put the RIN# in square brackets so I could (for example) search for [RIN9]
and only get that person's files, not [RIN99], [RIN999] etc. The new and
improved "ms00175" will make searching by ID# more smooth.

Like I said it is pretty simple, but I don't know if it will work for your
MRIN filing system.

Hopefully someone else will reply to your query.

Thanks,

Rob

Rob:
This is not a Legacy problem. It is a Windows / computer feature.
If you want the files to sort correctly you will need to use something like
this:

MS0001 - file name.tif
MS0010 - file name.tif
MS0100 - file name.tif
MS0002 - file name.tif
MS0020 - file name.tif
MS0200 - file name.tif
MS0003 - file name.tif
MS0030 - file name.tif

The trick is to use the same number of digits each time. Your name scheme
basically uses a blank after the digit and that is why it gets sorted early.

MS3 - file name.tif
MS100 - file name.tif
MS200 - file name.tif
MS300 - file name.tif
MS1000 - file name.tif
MS2000 - file name.tif
MS3000 - file name.tif

However, when trying to attach a file/picture to a Master Source, Legacy
lists the files in this manner below. Trying to find the right one is a bit
of a pain when dealing with a great number of files.

MS1 - file name.tif
MS100 - file name.tif
MS1000 - file name.tif
MS2 - file name.tif
MS200 - file name.tif
MS2000 - file name.tif
MS3 - file name.tif
MS300 - file name.tif
MS3000 - file name.tif

Is there a way to tweak Legacy to get the Load Picture window to "sort
Number Portion numerically" like the File ID Assistant window does with File
ID's?

Thanks!

I'd venture to guess that most current Legacy owners use only a fraction
of the features available. Legacy owners are no more obligated to use
every single feature now, then they will be in the future--regardless of

RE: [LegacyUG] Sort Number Portion Numerically?

2007-09-07 Thread Rob Miller
Hi Ralf:

My naming system is pretty simple (too simple apparently - OW!). But a "new
and improved" example of a file description is below:

ms00175 - SMITH, John (1884-1919) baptism registration [RIN9].tif
ms00200 - SMITH, John (1884-1919), DOE, Jane (1886-1930) marriage
registration [RIN9], [RIN43].tif

I wanted something descriptive (name, lifespan, and document type), that
contained the Master Source ID#, and the person's RIN# all for searching. I
put the RIN# in square brackets so I could (for example) search for [RIN9]
and only get that person's files, not [RIN99], [RIN999] etc. The new and
improved "ms00175" will make searching by ID# more smooth.

Like I said it is pretty simple, but I don't know if it will work for your
MRIN filing system.

Hopefully someone else will reply to your query.

Thanks,

Rob

Just one quibble with the first sentence... blood relationships do
*not* include step; that is a social relationship having nothing to do

Legacy can handle all blood relationships including step without a
problem. I wish everyone would please remember that genealogy and
family history are two very different things. A scholarly genealogy is
literally a list of "begats." The "begats" with which most of us are
familiar occur in the Bible. It is the family in black and white.

A family history on the other hand takes the black and white family
genealogy and colorizes it with stories- It is not a case of either/or.
One can have both and I believe it's wise to keep the two separate. I
love Legacy and no matter what they do I'm not changing. I began with
it several years ago-switched to FTM after my system crashed and
genealogy.com sent me free software and have recently come back to
legacy.

FWI my thoughts-

Alice

Hi Rob,

That's the way Windows sorts isn't it?

I always put in the zeros.

To add zeros without doing a heap of reattaching, you'd need to change the
filenames and then find them in Access and change them there as well.
There are batch filename renaming programs. Some are more complex than
others.

[LegacyUG] step-children etc.

2007-09-07 Thread Heather Stovold
Legacy handles step-children, adopted children, multiple marriages, etc.
just fine. Better than some other programs I've used. No worries. (The
person was saying if a person wanted a program that only dealt with
basically what I'll call genetic genealogy) - that there would be no need
for these other things in the program either.)

This is not an ideal answer, but it might be your most "workable" one.
Consider what your highest number might be. Let's assume for this purpose it
will be 45819 at the very, very most.

To get it to sort correctly, pad it. That number is five digits, so make
sure each number is five digits long. Example using your names:

MS1 - file name.tif
MS2 - file name.tif
MS3 - file name.tif
MS00100 - file name.tif
MS00200 - file name.tif
MS00300 - file name.tif
MS01000 - file name.tif
MS02000 - file name.tif
MS03000 - file name.tif

Longer filenames, granted, but it works. When that is sorted, it will appear
in the correct order. Will this work for you? Let us know.

Re: [LegacyUG] Sort Number Portion Numerically?

2007-09-07 Thread Leon Chapman
Rob:
This is not a Legacy problem. It is a Windows / computer feature.
If you want the files to sort correctly you will need to use something like
this:

MS0001 - file name.tif
MS0010 - file name.tif
MS0100 - file name.tif
MS0002 - file name.tif
MS0020 - file name.tif
MS0200 - file name.tif
MS0003 - file name.tif
MS0030 - file name.tif

The trick is to use the same number of digits each time. Your name scheme
basically uses a blank after the digit and that is why it gets sorted early.

Elizabeth C,

If you want to combine sources, go to Sources and then check the
button in the bottom right hand corner called, "Combine Highlighted
Source with Another in List". Legacy allows you to have two
identically named sources. You can use this tool to combine them.

Cheers, Mitch

Re: [LegacyUG] Lists in Legacy

2007-09-07 Thread Cathy

Hi Elizabeth,

If in your Master Source List you find you have two copies of the one
source, then use the bar at the bottom of the list to combine one
with the other. The source details will remain untouched.

If both copies of the source happened to be attached to the same
event for an individual, you'll find that event for that person now
has two copies, perhaps with differing source details - which is why
they're not automatically combined.

I'm surprised that addresses work differently but since I rarely use
them, I can't comment.

Re: [LegacyUG] Re: Legacy: Family History or Genealogy?

2007-09-07 Thread Jim Keener
Well, that's it, I can't take anymore. I've been reading this negative
stuff for two days now. I've been doing genealogy for 17 years and I don't
think any of the other programs come even close to Legacy in what the
software offers for the price we pay for the product. What in the world do
you expect for forty bucks?

For the most part, this venue for discussion about Legacy is usually civil
and non-critical of the software we all use. But the last couple of days,
several users have written things here that, in my opinion, go way beyond an
intelligent, reasonable discussion of the product.

Legacy does not answer every request by saying that would cause a complete
re-write. That is laughable in light of what you really want to see changed
about the software.

Changing the subject line does not change the core of what you dislike about
Legacy. You are wasting your breath (excuse me, wasting your typing) by
continuing to criticize the company because you would like for them to
change the structure of families in the software. This platform is here to
help Legacy customers, and insinuations being made hurts all of us who
appreciate this company and its products. The ugly tone embarassing to me,
and the majority of this group.

Thanks Legacy. We appreciate all you do. If some folks don't like the
structure, hopefully they will sign off here, go use the other software they
are trumpeting, or go write their own software.

But I do like your example with small letters instead of capitals. The small
letters let the numbers stand out more.

Rob, Sort or file your number by:
ms1
ms2
ms3

This will keep everything numerically. Just start with enough zeros in front
my file has 6 figures so started with 01

[LegacyUG] Re: Legacy: Family History or Genealogy? -TH

2007-09-07 Thread Alice Hawrilenko
Legacy can handle all blood relationships including step without a problem. I
wish everyone would please remember that genealogy and family history are two
very different things. A scholarly genealogy is literally a list of "begats."
The "begats" with which most of us are familiar occur in the Bible. It is the
family in black and white.
A family history on the other hand takes the black and white family genealogy
and colorizes it with stories- It is not a case of either/or. One can have both
and I believe it's wise to keep the two separate. I love Legacy and no matter
what they do I'm not changing. I began with it several years ago-switched to
FTM after my system crashed and genealogy.com sent me free software and have
recently come back to legacy.
FWI my thoughts-

RE: [LegacyUG] Sort Number Portion Numerically?

2007-09-07 Thread Rob Miller
Hey Robert:

Yeah, that will work, but unfortunately I am far enough into the mission,
I'm not really looking forward to having to change a whack of file names,
and then reattach them all back to their Master Source. I should have done
it a long time ago!

It may turn out to be the only way, but I was hoping there might be a "click
here" way around it (or someone from Legacy would say "Relax Rob! It's in
7.0!! LOL).

Thanks for your reply!

Rob-

This is not an ideal answer, but it might be your most "workable" one.
Consider what your highest number might be. Let's assume for this purpose it
will be 45819 at the very, very most.

To get it to sort correctly, pad it. That number is five digits, so make
sure each number is five digits long. Example using your names:

MS1 - file name.tif
MS2 - file name.tif
MS3 - file name.tif
MS00100 - file name.tif
MS00200 - file name.tif
MS00300 - file name.tif
MS01000 - file name.tif
MS02000 - file name.tif
MS03000 - file name.tif

Longer filenames, granted, but it works. When that is sorted, it will appear
in the correct order. Will this work for you? Let us know.

Re: Legacy: Family History or Genealogy? - was Re: [LegacyUG] Homosexual Entries

2007-09-07 Thread agh3rd

Not a discussion- just a comment.

Any genealogical/family historian program offered to the general public
should not be biased toward or against any one particular culture or
religion. Since in some contries and at least one state homosexuals can
legally marry and are thus LEGAL spouses such spouses should be able to
be entered into a program just as any other spouse can be.

Keep religion in your heart, your home, and your church... but keep it
the hell out of MY public institutions and my genealogy programs.

history or some odd relationship between two people of
the same sex. So far, I have not found one homosexual
relationship in my family going back to 1800. Maybe
this is because my family is made up of Christians,

They cannot create children and therefore are

My gut feel is that the 'FH' route will be much more

[LegacyUG] Lists in Legacy

2007-09-07 Thread Elizabeth Cunningham
I have been trying to clean up discrepancies and duplications in my
Master Lists.

When I find two addresses that are spelled slightly differently, and
edit them so they are spelled the same, the addresses merge and I have
one address. When I do that with Source Lists, (like birth
announcements for two children in the same family, and the Source is now
titled the same) the sources do not merge. Why is that?

If I am going to go lump things together, does this mean I need to go to
every person connected to a source and fix them all individually?

Any information would be appreciated.

What kind of record do you think you could find, going back to 1800,
indicating the sexual preferences of your ancestors?

If you are going to exclude homosexual couples because they don't have
children, you need to exclude childless couples.

I presume this list is moderated? It is inexcusable for this to be
permitted on a genealogy list.

Hi everyone,

I politely asked that there be no more discussion of this topic (homosexual

have chosen to ignore it. (See my post of Thurs. 9/6/2007, 8:28 AM, subject:

Please review http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Etiquette.asp and especially
pay attention to rules 1 and 5. Some individuals are very upset by this

I will check the Legacy User Group postings tomorrow evening and begin

2007-09-07 Thread Wayne Martell

There are many 'Gen' fixes and enhancements which we have already requested

Darlene,

You are too narrow minded. I may not believe in that type of relationship,
but I am also educated enough to know that those relationships are as old as
marriage itself. Just because we don't come across written "confessions"
doesn't mean they didn't exist in our genealogies.

I think Legacy should be a genealogy program. I think it has gone the
family history route far enough. There are plenty of notes options for
those wishing to include family history which is what I do. I think it is
already well enouh balanced.

Just because Legacy could decide to include same sex unions as an option is
an absolutely ridiculous reason for leaving it and moving down to inferior
software. Just because they could choose to include it, doesn't mean that I
have to use it.

I think Legacy is just fine the way it is. The only other thing is that I
am really looking forward to version 7 to continue my genealogy. It is the
best genealogy software on the market and has a great team of support as
well as a great group of users that are always glad to help the rest of us.

Re: [LegacyUG] Re: Legacy: Family History or Genealogy?

2007-09-07 Thread Ron Bernier

Ron Bernier

Re: Legacy: Family History or Genealogy? - was Re: [LegacyUG] Homosexual Entries

2007-09-07 Thread Darlene & Don Hicks
I use Legacy because I want to trace my blood line
back as far as I can. I could care less about family
history or some odd relationship between two people of
the same sex. So far, I have not found one homosexual
relationship in my family going back to 1800. Maybe
this is because my family is made up of Christians,
and we honor our Lord. If I did ever find someone,
who is homosexual, in my family, their partner or
friend would not be included in with my genealogy.
They cannot create children and therefore are
irrelevant. I think all the homosexuals should get
together and create their own program. If Legacy
turns out to favor special interest groups, such as
gays, I will go elsewhere to continue with my
genealogy. I don't want anyone answering my e-mail
because this is MY opinion and there doesn't need to
be any discussion.

If Millenia wants to survive as a company, it must go the Family History
route. A Family History program can be used by everybody, including the
purists; a Genealogy program can only be used by the purists. They would be
foolish to limit their market any way.

Re: [LegacyUG] birth, marriage and death Events?

2007-09-07 Thread Hugh Busey
Ralf, Wendy, Cathy, Jenny:

Thank you all for a very useful and stimulating subject. This is one part
of Legacy that I feel is open to some improvement - at least the user
interface part of sourcing. I have been and still am in a bit of a quandry
as to how to handle the various kinds of sources and have them show up where
and how I would like them. I'm not totally enamored with Ver. 6 source
handling. As a result I am backed up in entering data.

I understand that Goeff and company have new and better(?) ways of doing
things coming in Ver.7. I'm all in favor although I know next to nothing
about what they may have in mind. I hope the "templates" I hear referred to
do not limit flexibility.

Now, as so often happens, the release date is extending out until "sometime
in the fall". Do I hold up until then or do I go ahead and make due with
Ver. 6, warts and all? [I'm a retired instrument designer and understand
meeting release dates, especially as complexity increases.]

For instance, I would like all of my B,M,D, census, City Dir, Events, news
articles, wills, books, etc. able to have a reference name, number and page
# or at least a numeric reference to the Master Source List. And Ralf, I
personally don't care if they do look a "little goofy", as long as it gets
the information across. My opinion.

Keep sharing your ideas. We need them.

If it actually starts with another letter or word, then you would just scroll

[LegacyUG] European Locations

2007-09-07 Thread cabyers

I really like Family Atlas, it seems to have a very complete list of
locations for Europe, and it a good a good mapping program. I like its
"Nearby Places" feature, where I can enter a place name, radial distance,
get a list of locations, sort them by distance of place name, and save the
list as a spreadsheet. Their data base is over 3M locations.

It's the only program I've found with these features. Their web page is:

http://www.familyatlas.com/

Wish Legacy would add their features to the next release? Legacy gives you
a "Nearby Places" list, but there is no way to save it. You have to copy it
by hand.

2007-09-07 Thread Dawn Crowley
Try right clicking in the blue bar at the top of the screen. It should
give you a resize option. Perhaps that will be of use to you.

Changing my screen settings is not the answer as this then affects all
my other programmes which are working fine.

Thank you for any help you can give.

Re: [LegacyUG] Can't see all the screen

2007-09-07 Thread June
Thank you for the help Mitch, I have been able to grap the blue line and
resize the screen but regardless of how small I make the screen I still
can't see all the contents of the Legacy screen - I am still missing out a
section of the boxes on the right hand size and also the bottom. Is it
possible to change the size of the boxes?

The boxes actually look quite large with small text inside them?

June

June,
If you can see the top of the window (the big blue line), double click
on that and it should resize to fit the screen. If you can;t see it,
try to move the window down until you can.
Cheers, Mitch

RE: [LegacyUG] Cause of death and medical notes

2007-09-07 Thread Nancy Bender
I use the area under cause of death for any medical notes, such as illness,
surgery, etc throughout the person's life. Any notes related to the death, I
put in Death Notes.

I am wondering how others record information about a person's death. I've
been entering Cause of Death and using the area just below to record notes
regarding the death. But, I've just discovered that, when you produce a
narrative report (for example), the report only states the cause of death
and where it gives the main information about birth, christening, death,
burial, etc. The information I've entered about the death appear as a
separate item called "medical notes", which appears immediately below the
basic info and above all Events.

Because the Notes field appears under Cause of Death, and the way the notes
actually appear in a narrative, the Notes area seems to be a wee bit
misleading.

So, I'm curious how others use the Notes field under Cause of Death. Do you
tend to use it as a general field for recording other stuff unrelated to the
death? Or do you perhaps put death information into an Event?

Thanks,

Christine

Re: [LegacyUG] birth, marriage and death Events?

2007-09-07 Thread Jenny M Benson

Ralf X wrote
Do people create Events for birth, marriage, obits and death
announcements? I've been transcribing them, but not sure where to have
them appear (they look a little goofy as text with sources).

And if yes, are they announcements or notices?

I have created an Event named "Press" and I use this for any instance of
someone being mentioned in a newspaper or similar - BMD and Engagement
announcements, obituaries, Court proceedings, etc.

In the Description area I put the type of announcement/article and the
name of the newspaper. For example: "Description: Death Notice - The
Times." If it is a short announcement or article I copy the text into
the Notes area, but if it's a long article I summarise it in Notes and
would attach a full printout to Reports. (I do the same with long
documents like Wills.)

In addition, I often cite the same article/announcement as a Source for
another Fact/Event.
