Re: [LegacyUG] The problem is fixed

2007-12-08 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
Yes, IMHO very few people want it. For myself, when
adding continuously for an hour, I run a backup. But I
might be working to do lists, or transcribing a bunch
of wills (slow typer) so not need to backup until a
five or ten hour stint. Creating a running backup
would be done with a time range in place. That would
mean (for instance) a new backup each hour on the
hour. I would need to eventually delete each of them
by hand. I used to backup EVERY time before I turned
of the computer, but now consider how much stuff I put
in. That may be lazy, but thats what I do.

Re: [LegacyUG] German, British, Dutch census returns -- off-topic???

2007-12-08 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
Yes there is, but I forgot where it is. I have created
a template for each of the US Census years, with the
official date ranges added into the Publication Facts.
I then take the actual date (when shown) as the Event
date. SO I show both dates somwhere, and compare those
with a large difference.
It is also available in Thorndale and Dollarhides Map
Guide of the US Census pages xvi - xix. The book
should be in most US libraries with a genealogy
section. Good Luck. Rich in LA CA

I don't know if this helps, but, if you don't want ANY of the
"Baptism" events, edit the event from the master lists and change the
event name to "Christening". Would that help?

RE: [LegacyUG] How to make a Master Source of the IGI

2007-12-08 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
It is NO different, but some researchers, a lot of
them NEWBIES, find the IGI and give it as much or more
credability than hearsay or undocumented notes. By the
time they understand what IGI actually is, they have
wasted a lot of time and money. SO I and others here
will continue to mention this for each flock of
newbies.

If you mean in the Individual Box, it's under Customize/Colors. Next to
Text Colors, pick Contents and then choose the color you want.

I know the field names are supposed to be turned blue when
there is a source
entered for that field, but I just noticed that my field
names are now
black, regardless of whether there is a source listed for
the event or not.
I've searched through my manual and online help files and I

help?

At the very top of the screen on the address bar (the same line where
FILE
EDIT ADD VIEW are) Click SEARCH then at the very bottom you will see
SEARCH
THE IGI WEBSITE.

The first time you do this it will pop up a box about logging with your
name
and password but you can bypass that. It is a free registration on the
LDS
website but it isn't required to register to use the IGI.

You can search one person at a time or your entire file at once (which I

don't recommend unless you have a really fast connection!) Then it will

tell you if you have any matches. You can look through the matches one
at a
time and compare the info to what you have.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to make a Master Source of the IGI

2007-12-08 Thread Michele Lewis
At the very top of the screen on the address bar (the same line where FILE
EDIT ADD VIEW are) Click SEARCH then at the very bottom you will see SEARCH
THE IGI WEBSITE.

The first time you do this it will pop up a box about logging with your name
and password but you can bypass that. It is a free registration on the LDS
website but it isn't required to register to use the IGI.

You can search one person at a time or your entire file at once (which I
don't recommend unless you have a really fast connection!) Then it will
tell you if you have any matches. You can look through the matches one at a
time and compare the info to what you have.

Ok then! How about adding one IGI source through Legacy and then use
that
as a template to go in and reformat the ones you already have. The only

thing that you will need to change is the microfilm number.

Thanks for your kind reply Michele.

Un fortunately the IGI information I have is already in Legacy which I

am wanting to tidy this up first.

However I will be adding all the CULLODEN references from India later
on so your help will be very useful - so many thanks again.

Valerie,
I use the IGI as a source and have no problems doing that :) I use it

as a temporary source. I need to know WHERE I got the info. Let's
say it is a
marriage. I find it on the IGI. I add it to my file and let Legacy
fill
out the source for me (it will do this if you search the IGI from

within

the
program). Then I just make myself a to-do item to write off to the
county
to get a copy of the license itself to to order the microfilm and just
copy
it off of microfilm. It is no big deal. The IGI is a great tool :)

So my advice to you is to search the IGI from WITHIN LEGACY (hit
search on
the very top line of the address bar, then hit search IGI). If you

use

anything from the IGI the program will automatically format the IGI
source correctly and insert it in every area where you used the IGI.
It is a very
handy thing!

I've searched through my manual and online help files and I can't figure out

[LegacyUG] How to reuse existing sources that are *almost* what you need (was: How would you source this in Legacy?)

2007-12-08 Thread Wendy Howard

Hi Pat,

"When you put so much info into the detail, how do you avoid a lot of
retyping when a week or an hour hence you need to cite the same source
with some minor variations?"

I would copy the source back into the Source Clipboard, make the desired
changes, then attach the "new" source to the item that relates to it.

If you open the Assigned Sources for an individual (the books icon) you
will see at the bottom left an icon that looks like two sheets of
paper. Hover your cursor over that icon, and it will tell you its
purpose is to "Copy Source to Clipboard".

Highlight the source you want to reuse, then click on that icon. A
message will come up (if there's anything already in the Source
Clipboard) asking whether to overwrite the existing source, or append
this new one to it. Every case I've had so far I've wanted to replace
the existing.

Then open up the Source Clipboard (click on the upwards-facing arrow or
press <1>*) to edit it - you're only changing what is in the Source
Clipboard, not what has already been assigned to your data.

Now it is ready to be assigned to your data.

Don't forget also, to use your mouse/keyboard to copy/cut/paste for you
instead of retyping things that are already visible on your screen,
whether it's in your Legacy database, a web page, a document someone has
sent you, or whatever. If you don't know how to do this, there are some
instructions on my web site at
http://www.geocities.com/wendy_m_howard/How-to.htm It's a very handy
tool that I use many times each day - including for inserting my
signature that you see below, and all URLs that you see in my posts.

* see "shortcut keys" in the Help files for more keyboard shortcuts.

Hope this helps. :-)

You can also use Alt - PrtSc to capture just the topmost window, instead
of the entire screen.

John

Why have a separate program for screen shots? a UK Keyboard ( at
least)
has a "PrtScr" key which copies the screen into the Windows
clipboard from

which one can paste into paint or your favourite image editor.

Re: [LegacyUG] German, British, Dutch census returns -- off-topic???

2007-12-08 Thread Wendy Howard

Hi Pat,

How to record census data in Legacy is on-topic for this list. Finding
the data itself isn't.

Try joining a Rootsweb list (http://lists.rootsweb.com/) for a state or
country where you might expect to find your people listed in census
data, and ask there. Finding the answer for one state might also tell
you the answer for other states - if not, find another list that covers
another area of interest to you. There are also lists at Rootsweb that
deal only with censuses, so try searching for those as well.

As for Google, try searching on "census data" (without the quotes) for a
start, and perhaps include a state of interest to you, and see what you
get. I'm sure you'd find something of interest with that search.

Hope this helps. :-)

Michele:

I think that sourcing it as a "cemetery survey" would actually be a case
of

fairly extreme splitting. If you wanted to really lump, you could have a
Master Source called something like "Burial Records" and use that for all
cemetery listings whether found online, by actual visits, or in
publications. In that case, there would be little or no information about
the Master Source itself; all the data would be entered at the Source
Detail

screen and yes, you would include the URL since it would theoretically be
required for you or someone else to find the listing again (although in
ten
years or so, who knows?) Another alternative would be to use
Interments.com

as a Master Source, treating it almost as if it were a book, list the site
data with the master source, and attach each individual burial record
through the Source Detail screen.

There are lots and lots of "right" ways to slice the Master Source List
cake, even after you've decided whether to split or lump. The hard part
is

deciding on an over all scheme.

I want to source a cemetery survey. I am not sure what all I need to
include in the source window. Since I am a lumper :) I am thinking my
source will be Cemetery Survey and then put the rest in the details.

I have the name, email address and the date the cemetery was surveyed. Do
you think I need to also include the URL? (it is posted on Interment.com)

Re: [LegacyUG] Is this possible with Legacy?

2007-12-08 Thread Pat Hickin

Cathy --

Thanks a million for this -- it took me about 3 minutes to generate a 17
page .pdf file of all my unsouced people --- I am utterly appalled!

ca 600 people out of 4500!!

I think they're primarily from files originally imported a decade or more
ago from my old PAF 2 file, when I had to put sources in notes and it was
all such a bother. And I had thought perhaps I wouldn't have ANY!!!

Ghastly!

Currently, only partially.

You can find everyone who has no sources at all attached by highlighting
all sources in the Master Source list and clicking Show List. Tag this
group and then search for everyone without this tag number.

They have no sources.
You can then use Advanced Sourcing to assign a particular source - read
the tabs carefully and make sure you have a backup before using Advanced
Sourcing.

More Source searching options have been requested so maybe more will be
possible with Legacy 7.

Cathy

At 03:16 AM 7/12/2007, you wrote:

don't have a specific source for (basically all those bits of info that I
copied down that that I didn't bother to source at the time, I am still
paying for that mistake!)

Anyway, is there anyway for me to easily attach this Unverified source to
every entry in my file that does not have a real source attached?

Michele,

5 hours is a long time without a back-up and I can appreciate your concern,
I back up every hour or so. In case you haven't yet found it, you can
customise the tool bar by right clicking on it, you can then drag the
"Back-up" icon onto the top bar and it will then appear on the tool bar.

BTW - it's good fun to debate stuff and there is always the chance we may
learn something!

All I did was restart the program and all of the problems completely
disappeared. I guess I should have tried that first :) However, I am sorry
that my panic sparked this volatile debate on how the Legacy database,
does

and does not work!

All I know is Legacy is 100% better than FTM ever was and I have never
regretted switching over. An occasional glitch is to be expected. I always
keep my database backed up every day in several locations so I am not the
least bit worried about losing any data. My concern was the inconvenience
of it all :) I was loading a ton of new data that I had collected and had
been working on it for about 5 hours so when all of a sudden I lost my
little tag thinggie at the bottom that lets me scroll throw the tagged
folks

(the ones I had tagged to get this data in) I panicked. That is when I
noticed that my bookmarks were also gone (the entire bookmark line. It
wasn't like just my 3 bookmarks were gone, the bookmark feature was gone).
And then when I went to options to see if I could fix it I noticed that
all

of the LDS stuff had check marks by it and they were all unchecked.

After 5 hours of working my nerves were a bit thin :) :) :) I don't know
why on these mailing lists (certainly this isn't the only one) some people
feel like they have to argue about stuff.

Sorry, after I wrote it I wondered if I would confuse people! On the
Individual's Information page if there is a blank field for Chr but in
the events/facts field there is a baptism event, it is possible, by
right clicking the options tab to be given the suggestion to swap the
baptism event to the chr field. If you do that, the details move to the
Chr field below the born field, but the event/fact designator is still
there as baptism but with no further information. It is then necessary
to delete the event.

I think all this started when I originally moved all data from an old
Reunion file to Legacy and, for some reason, the baptism event wasn't
merged at the outset with the Christening field - leaving a lot of
baptisms in the events field.

Does this now make sense?

Haven't been picking up email the last few days,
but it seems to me the simplest way to go from screen shot to Legacy
database would be from Prt Scrn (or with Alt), Pasting as .jpg into MS
Paint, and saving to your Legacy picture Folder, and using the crop function
in Legacy.

I hope I'm right in thinking that Leg 7 is including a sourcing options for

You can also use Alt - PrtSc to capture just the topmost window, instead
of the entire screen.

Why have a separate program for screen shots? a UK Keyboard ( at least)
has a "PrtScr" key which copies the screen into the Windows clipboard
from

which one can paste into paint or your favourite image editor.

Re: [LegacyUG] German, British, Dutch census returns -- off-topic???

2007-12-08 Thread Pat Hickin
Thanks, Chris, I've been careless about both dates -- I guess someday I'll
get the official date AND go thru all the census returns I've copied and get
the enumeration dates -- for now I'll just try to include those from now on.

Is there a website that lists the enum dates for ALL the US censuses.

All the ancestors I've identified were on this side of the Atlantic before
the Am Rev.
To what extent are there extant censuses for the British Isles, Holland, and
the Germanies before that date?

To what extent digitized and census online?
Are there good websites for locating them??

I really can't think how to Google for this info efficiently!!

Thanks, for any help

I recently decided stop using the built in cenus event and instead created
two new events, Census US and Census UK

For US cenus entries I record:

Description - the age of the person and their relationship
Date: the official census date
Place: the location
Notes: the enumeration date.

For the sentence I setup:
[HeShe] appeared as [Desc] in the US Federal Census of [Date] for
[Place][CR][Notes]

So my great-grandfather his 1860 event reads:
Description: Son, aged 10
Date: 1 Jun 1860
Place: Astoria, Queens, New York, USA
Notes: Recorded 17 Jul 1860

The resulting sentence is:
He appeared as Son, aged 10 in the US Federal Census of 1 Jun 1860 for
Astoria, Queens, New York, USA.

Recorded 17 Jul 1860

When I'm not being lazy I record the actual address at the time of the
sentence as a "residence" event.

In Family Tree Maker, I used the Residence event as the place where I
recorded census information. It came into Legacy like this: For example,
I

might have an event named Residence, and in the description it might say
Hickory Township, Carroll County, Arkansas, USA. The date would be the
year

of the census, say 1850. The Location field is blank.

Should I have a different procedure--is that where the census information
goes, or should I put it somewhere else? If I leave Residence as an
Event,
should I delete what is now in Description and put it in the Location
field

of the event?

thing that you will need to change is the microfilm number.

[LegacyUG] Adding a source from the clipboard ?

2007-12-08 Thread Valerie Garton
Possibly I should have done it differently but this my situation now:

I have entered 4 generations of my family from a manuscript and put the
full details of this source in my Master list.

I now want to add this source to all of these people.

I can select the MS in my clipboard and then go in to everyone's
individual screen and press - for each person and save each person.

Is there a shorter/quicker way please like using the + ?

Ok then! How about adding one IGI source through Legacy and then use
that
as a template to go in and reformat the ones you already have. The only

thing that you will need to change is the microfilm number.

Valerie,
I use the IGI as a source and have no problems doing that :) I use it
as a
temporary source. I need to know WHERE I got the info. Let's say it is
a
marriage. I find it on the IGI. I add it to my file and let Legacy
fill
out the source for me (it will do this if you search the IGI from within

county

copy
it off of microfilm. It is no big deal. The IGI is a great tool :)

So my advice to you is to search the IGI from WITHIN LEGACY (hit search

RE: [LegacyUG] How to make a Master Source of the IGI

2007-12-08 Thread Valerie Garton
I am starting off with the IGI as my first Master Source so I cannot
relate it to " any different than a family member saying that something
happened on such-and-such date ".

I appreciate your reply but it did not answer my question. It is very
difficult learning a new program, particularly one as complex as Legacy
which I love, and helpful and specific answers are very much
appreciated.

I have however been very much helped by other members to whom I say
thank you - you know who you are.

I am fully aware of what the IGI is and the need, as in all indexes, to
go to the original. It does however have the advantage of putting you in
a place and time to start looking much better than time for ever in a
whole wide world.

Why? Why is the IGI any different than a family member saying that
something happened on such-and-such date? List the event as you would
any other bit of information and put the IGI as a source. If this is a
birth record, then when you get true information from a birth record (if
possible) then it gets added as a source for that information. You can
always swap Alt Birth with the Birth information, for example.

I'd probably commit suicide before using the IGI as a Master Source!
I add an event to the person called Verify and list all IGI info in that
event as a task to be verified. Indexes (of any kind) are not sources
but merely clues and hints to the original documents which ARE sources
and which I put in my master Source List.

I want to start with all the entries that are there from the IGI and

Re: [LegacyUG] Baptism events in wrong field

2007-12-08 Thread Michele Lewis
To be honest, I have never really worried about it. I have a few
Christening dates (my mother's German family) and few Baptismal dates. I
left the Christening line on the family group sheet view only because I
couldn't think of anything I really wanted to display there. I enter the
Christening dates right there. For baptisms I enter it as an event. I do
it this way because that is how Legacy is set up. However, you can change
things around easily. You can do the Christening as an event if you need
more room to document information (which is how you do Baptisms) and just
leave the Christening line blank on the Family View. And, you can just get
rid of that entire line if you don't like looking at it. :) :) :) I can
see where it is a problem with importing a file though :( :( :(

I have to say I was actually using the terms as synonymous in my (almost

following an imported file.

[LegacyUG] Publish your Family Tree

2007-12-08 Thread George Davidson
For those who are interested in publishing a book of your
family tree, LuLu Publishing is really worth checking into.

Website: http://www.lulu.com/en/products/

I published a test family tree file and am very impressed
with the system, speed and quality they produce.
I received my review test copy yesterday and was surprised
at the quality (paperback book option).

I will now create family tree files for various family tree
lines and be able to publish them for family members as

The good part is that your LuLu files are always kept on

Another Legacy member suggested LuLu several days ago, thank

When dealing with each individual I can swap the information for the

the baptism event.

What sort of information and where is it, and if you are swapping from

latter?

I have a long list where there is a baptism in the

RE: [LegacyUG] How to make a Master Source of the IGI

2007-12-08 Thread M. Brenzel

Indexes (of any kind) are not sources but merely clues and hints to the
original documents which ARE sources and which I put in my master Source
List.

I am about to tidy up my Legacy file now that I know a little more.

I want to start with all the entries that are there from the IGI and
also to add many more so I want to do it right.

Yes I know it is my list and I can do it any way I like so long as
anyone can find the information BUT I would like some input as to how
others have managed the IGI as a Master Source.

In the Master Location List, you can click on the one you don't like and
go to Edit, and change it. Since I use city/state/ country format,
Germany by itself is preceded by two commas, such as
", , Germany" therefore it would not be confused by "Germantown,
county, state".

Do you mean that it merged them automatically to the
left one, or that it left the two unmatched as
different and went past them? The first is real bad,
and the second is only annoying(IMHO). I had about two
hundred of the second, and had to FIND them using the
merge the Manual Merge style. I do that with the
nobility branches of the family, with the various
titles held by the same person, and also the spanish
branch and the double surnames. You are not alone.

Re: [LegacyUG] Baptism events in wrong field

2007-12-08 Thread Hope Bagot Bees

Because Germany is indexed before GERMANY. As soon as Germany is displayed hit the drop down arrow
at the end of the field and you will probably see GERMANY listed just under Germany. As stated
above you can merge the two into the capitalized one or leave it as is and select which you prefer.

Re: [LegacyUG] Photo family tree [was Is this possible with Legacy?]

2007-12-08 Thread Susan Daily
Kathy,
The photo family tree in Legacy is just for ancestors. You have a few other
options. You can do is a Family Group Sheet that includes just the pictures,
making sure you uncheck everything else in the report. It will not include
grandchildren though.

Or do a Descendants Chart. Be sure to include pictures. I would take out
most information like marriage date. It isn't pretty, but they do show up in
chart format.

merge the two, so that the one in all caps becomes the only version.

If this is not the case, then I offer sympathies, because I know how
annoying it is to have to type the whole word just to get it to appear
instead of the one you don't want appearing. Not sure why it would keep the
smaller letters when you get to the Y though. I will have to test that
sometimes when I've got Legacy running.

The charting that will be in V7 will be able to do this. I don't
think you really can in V6

[LegacyUG] Baptism events in wrong field

2007-12-08 Thread Hope Bagot Bees
I have a large number of Baptisms in the Events field. When dealing
with each individual I can swap the information for the Christening
field, but this involves a lot of mouse work as I then have to delete
the baptism event. I have a long list where there is a baptism in the
events field, but is there any way I can swap all of them with one
action rather than each one individually, please?

[LegacyUG] Capitalizing problem

2007-12-08 Thread Elizabeth Cunningham
When I type addresses, I normally type the name of the country not
America in caps -- as GERMANY. When I was entering an zncestor who is
from Germany, (and about whom I know little else) the autofill part
came up with "Germantown", which is where I live had have addresses.
Continuting to type GERMANY left everything in small letters "Germany".
Does anybody know how to get past this?

Re: [LegacyUG] Is this possible with Legacy?

2007-12-08 Thread JLB
I think the Legacy trees only go up from one person, not down from 2.
However, you could cut and paste pictures in FastStone Viewer, or Adobe
or what have you, to create your own. Pick a tree picture for a
background and then layer people on top of it. Pretty easy to do.

Re: [LegacyUG] Merge unequal names not detected

2007-12-08 Thread Cathy

Hi Ron,

In the short term, use the Edit Left to edit the name on the left to
what you want and then merge.

For the long term, submit a bug report.

Cathy

At 12:14 PM 8/12/2007, you wrote:

When merging two records where the given names and surname are the
same except the case, the difference is not detected and therefore a
choice as to which one to keep is not offered. Example: LaVern
Taylor is not the same as Lavern Taylor but when these two records
are brought up for the merge, the names are not considered to be
different so the user can not chose to keep one or the other but
will only get the one from the "left" side of the merge.
