[LegacyUG] V 7 Source Writer
Has anyone else noticed that when creating a source for a GedCom from an individual that any comments that are typed about the quality of the Gedcom are repeated twice in the Footnote/Endnote citation? Any work around? Or should I just send a bug report? RE: [LegacyUG] new FamilySearch integration?
Pat, LDS nFS (new Family Search) is not available to every researcher at this time. It is still in beta testing and being released as Temple Districts go on-line for the new software system. It is my understanding that when all of the Temples are on line (probably, end of 2008, then Legacy vs.7 will sync with nFS. RE: [LegacyUG] Installing version 7
However, if you choose to uninstall Legacy v6, you must uninstall from the shortcut in the Start Menu folder or from the shortcut in the v6 folder in Windows Explorer. If you use Control Panel, you risk also disabling v7. And yes, if you convert your files to v7, you'll need to create a gedcom to import the file back into v6. Re: [LegacyUG] new FamilySearch integration?
Pat, The new FamilySearch Database will be addressed as soon as it is public right now it is restricted and the search is not totally set-up. You may actually find bits in Legacy 7.0 that do not work yet - they are setting it up. Having IE7 just sit there (I must for several programs I use) will really do no harm. I never use it - preferring Firefox. The mapping program (Virtual Earth) requires IE7. It is worth it! If you begin to enter a source it will ask you if you want to use the new source writer. The ability to convert old sources to source writer is not yet available. RE: [LegacyUG] Mapping Event Addresses
I use the following way of recording cemeteries: Name of town - name of cemetery, county, state, country ie: Dodge City - Maple Grove Cemetery, Ford Co., Kansas, USA This is recorded in the burial location. That way, I can move the pin on the maps right to the cemetery. I suppose you could add the plot info in parens after the cemetery's name and move the pin right to the place of burial. You could do the same thing for any kind of locations that you want to pin-point. In the events, place of Residence could be Dodge City - 908 A St., Ford Co. Kansas, then you could pinpoint the exact location of the house. I list the town first so that all locations are together in the location index. Hi Larry, No Legacy doesn't have a Duplicate Name Check on entry. I suggest your wife gets into the habit of just entering a name and then flicking to the Index View to check whether they are already there before entering more information -or looking for the name in the Index View before adding anything. It's a feature that has been often asked for but I can't recall why it isn't added. It's not a feature I feel a need for so which is no doubt why I can't recall. Re: [LegacyUG] Version 7.0 - Great Job
I usually lurk but needed to weigh in on this - First off, Jan - I hope all goes well for you with your test results - what you are facing is indeed the serious stuff of life. Second, the LUG received advance notification late afternoon Wednesday June 3 from Geoff that Version 7 was ready to download/purchase, something we have all been waiting for (some more patiently than others). I went to the site, reviewed the choices, made mine and shopped - everything on the site was clear and quite user-friendly (9:30 pm). Within 10 minutes I received via email a receipt and thanks for my purchase. Within 5 hours I received my password and instructions (2:00 am!). This morning when I went through my email I followed the instructions and everything went smoothly - all my customizations moved from Version 6 to 7 without any problem. Now I am up and running and able to play with the new version. Excellent job Millennia - I could not be more pleased. I am hoping you all get some well deserved rest soon. I am also hoping that some on this list get over themselves and their amazing sense of self importance or the sense that they know how to do everything better. Millennia is selling this product, they know their capabilities and time constraints. They can put the product out there and we can purchase or not on their terms - in many, if not all, instances when our purchases are made on line our credit cards are debited prior to receiving a product - I don't know why Wynthner is so aggrieved (not only in this instance but also a laundry list of business issues over the past month). Life is too short and most often the glass is half full! I have finally had enough of this second guessing of Millennia and I for one think you did an excellent job with your roll out. Re: [LegacyUG] Source titling question
Which brings me back to my original question. What is the underlying thought process that makes LUGers group by type rather than by name or location? And to insert here, I do have my US Census records grouped by type because they truly have no location other than in the source detail attached to each census event, and none apply to any one family but is available to use as a source for all families living at the time. But my original source, The Thompson and Given Families is groupd with other sources for Thompson, rather than as a group which you might call Book. (And not grouped as Given, nor Stewart, nor Ferguson, nor Pennsylvania, nor Ohio, nor any of the other surnames or locations contained therein.) As Angela pointed out, grouping by family is problematic when you run into an extended family in a census. And what do you do if you're lucky enough to find records for several of your lines in Cutter's 1915 _New England Families_, for example? (I have 23 different lines in that handy book.) Of course it would be ideal to go to the original records, but what if you just can't because they no longer exist or are not available to the public? Re: [LegacyUG] best practice for information collaboration
Legacy has 'IntelliShare' where one person keeps the Master File and co-workers contribute their family files for merging before sending the new file back out to everyone to continue working on. Since it sounds like no such arrangement has been implemented so far by you and your relative, I don't think there is a plan except for one you invent as you go. I am in the same situation with a cousin. So far she's using FTM (tsk, some people) so she just sends me descendant book reports and so on when she feels like it and I go through the whole thing one line at a time (the last one was 237 pages) adding in the stuff I don't have yet, referring to the end of the chart for the sources. It's the height of inefficiency. It's called IntelliShare. You can apply to all existing marriage from the OptionsCustomiseData Entry Rule for generating default married names and clicking Apply. They show up very nicely identified in the Index view when the option Include married names is selected. However, I noted it seems to only use the main surname (and not any alternates) of the husband. I didn't see a way to set it at the individual level. For me, this isn't a problem. The dominate cultural practice of my ancestors was to change the woman's surname upon marriage. So, today, even women who keep their birth surname often use both names legally (one socially and one professionally). Even if the woman doesn't choose to use both or only her birth surname, she will still likely receive correspondence in her husband's surname. 2008/6/3 Belinda : I've just finished watching the video online for some of the new features of Legacy 7 and I love the inclusion of the married names in indexes etc which is relevant for the vast majority of marriages in my file. But haven't been able to download the program yet so I'm not able to check this out for myself but what I'm wondering is there a solution to or if, not any suggestions for work arounds for the following. I like more and more women have retained my maiden name on marriage. What I'm wondering does the program have a check box or something for each women that you can tick if name was not changed on marriage (which would then alter indexes etc) or if not what would LUG members suggest as a work around for this situation. Re: [LegacyUG] Installing version 7
Ken McGinnis wrote: It's just simpler for the average person.Since v7 converts your family files the only way to keep v6 on your computer and to also have v7 would be you now have to copy family files to new locations. For example you would have to copy family files from C:\Legacy\Data (v6 files) to C:\Legacy7\Data (v7 files). If you have pictures in C:\Legacy\Pictures the v7 files will still work. But, a few months from now when you want to get rid of v6 from your computer because you never user it any longer you will not be able to remove the v6 folder because it still contains the pictures. Of course you can move the pictures, video files, sound files, and other data type items like these over to your v7 folders. But, now that they are moved you now have to go into Options, Customize, Locations tab, and click the view Current List of Multimedia Locations button and form this screen start changing each of the folders from the old location to the new location. Or, get tricky and do a global Search and Replace on PicturePaths. Most of the user settings will be retained and a normal user of Legacy simply installs it and continues to work on famiy history. They don't have to re-setup everything to their liking. I guess it's just several small things that for probably a lot of people on this list installing to a new folder would be a piece of cake but for many users who are not very famiiar with computers and getting around software I feel it is easier for them to just install right over 6.0 which is where it will default to. I simply recommended users install over 6.0 which from our point of view simplifies tech support calls. The end user only have one copy of Legacy. Legacy was designed to be installed over the previous version and simply work. If you know how to work with files and are pretty good working with Legacy go ahead and install to a separate folder as it's really not that big of deal and you will be able to quickly figure out any small thing that needs to be done. [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Pre-release - SUCCESS!
I'm going to a Family Reunion in less than 2 weeks and decided to try printing a descendants chart using the pre-release version of Legacy Charting. I have to report that the resulting printout was FABULOUS!! I had 5 generations, printed in color, with 272 names, pictures, range of lifetime (e.g., 1856-1904 or 1950-). I didn't want to clutter the boxes with too much information, just wanted a great visual for all to see and find themselves and relationship to others. I was able to grab and pull the chart margin (top/bottom) from 11 to 22 (the size of the color copier it would be printing on), and I was able to move the various generations up and down en masse to better fill the page, and also reposition some individuals to spread out some crowded areas. The chart was 8' long. After fiddling with it for a pleasant visual format, including changing the borders on the boxes and using a generational color scheme, I saved the file using the save as feature. The next day I added a few more pictures to my database and pulled up the existing chart. The new pictures were there, but I don't recall if I had to do a refresh or update to my existing file (sorry, just don't remember). I saved the chart again, and then used the publish button to save it as a pdf. I took the file on a USB flash drive to Staples (stationery/office supplies store) copy center and they printed it on photo quality paper. It turned out just the way I wanted it!! (and just the way it looked on my computer screen). It took about 3 hours to print, but the resulting chart is absolutely gorgeous!! I haven't heard anything about Legacy Charting [pre-release] for a while now and wanted to remind folks of this option. With all the griping and complaining lately, I also wanted to post a POSITIVE message and to say THANK YOU to Millennia Corp for such a great product!!! I'm just thrilled at the result. I know the chart will be the centerpiece of the reunion and I can't wait to show it off. RE: [LegacyUG] Installing version 7
Ok here is what I did as I was too impatient to wait for a response and this mailing list took hours to post my query (I still cant believe everyone uses a horrible mailing list rather than a forum). Anyway, what I did was first to backup my entire legacy directory (c:\Legacy) and all my datafiles. I found further details on the download page that said to uninstall legacy 6 so I did then and then installed V7. Since it needed a password and I didnt have it after many hours I emailed legacy and they sent it to me. I then installed the new one into c:\legacy. It picked up all my old settings and preferences as the uninstall didnt uninstall everything, obviously, and v7 works fine. By uninstalling you do get some old drivers off your system which is probably the main advantage to doing it this way. I expect in the next week I will get a reg key for v7 and will then be very happy. I agree with many users that sending the pw when you dl is not working very well, and it didnt work for me but have a thought for Legacy. They will literally tens of thousands of people hammering the system at the one time. There will be glitches. For a little bit of patience, and some manners, everyone will end up a lot happier. Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 6 and Legacy 7
I see no reason why one would do that - they use different formats for the database. But - it can be done. Rename the SETUP program you download (the exe) to Legacy7.exe. When you run it - it will create a folder called Legacy 7 and will not overwrite the Legacy 6 program, etc. You will have to copy your DATA and PICTURE Folders to the Legacy7 install if you want to use them. When you open a family file - it will be converted to the 7 format and be unusable in Legacy 6 (thus my original thought). BACK-UP everything first - I believe this is correct. [LegacyUG] Ver 7 mapping and push pins
I've read the archives and I've read the help files, but I'm still a little confused about how the mapping and push pins work. If these questions are answered in one of the new videos, let me know and I will buy today! Question 1: If you have a street address for the cemetery, it is properly entered in the Burial Address field, which is accessed by clicking the arrow at the end of the Burial location field. When you put it in the proper place, then Map My Places only finds the location entered from the Master Location list. It does not find the specific cemetery. I have read several suggestions about how others enter this, but if you have to enter the specific street address for each location, won't this make your Master Location List rather long and cumbersome? If this is the only way, I have lots of work to do to get the mapping feature to work properly. Question 2: For some reason, the push pin for my parents' hometown comes up on the same street they live on, only five blocks south. I have NOT entered their address, so I'm guessing this is just where VE has decided to put the pin for their town. It feels like we should be able to click on the push pin and drag it to where we want it to be, but I know that doesn't work. Is there a complicated reason why that is not an option? I'll take a simple not even possible. I don't need a detailed explanation as to why not, since I probably wouldn't understand it anyway! :) Thanks to all of you who have taught me so much about Legacy (and genealogy!) -- Dede Holden Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp

Hi Keith, Try shortening the name to Edenkoben, Pfalz, Bayern, Germany and it should show up on the Legacy v7 map. Re: [LegacyUG] accessed date
Isn't that part of the source detail for each time you use that Master Source? Though on most screens where you enter a URL for the Master Source there is a field for date. I've been leaving it blank as unless you are accessing a site that never changes or displays clearly when the database was posted and that database isn't being updated, a date doesn't apply to all uses of the Master source. We did have Override options for the Master Sources in Beta but they seem to have disappeared and reappeared with the Source detail screens and I don't know why. Re: [LegacyUG] Installing version 7
My first installation of v.7 went into the middle of Legacy 6, so I just deleted the whole folder, and reinstalled it under C:\ so it now sits alphabetically under the v.6 installation in the Windows folder tree. I copied over my Picture folder contents and my main database, so it could transform it into the new v.7 database. I can run them both easily (keeping separate names for the backup zips of course and different color schemes for quick ID) but I'm finding no point since I can turn off the Maps, the Source Writer and married names for women. Without those, it's v.6 with benefits (eg. editing from the Master Lists) but without the confusion of too many changes at once. -- JL JLog - simple computer technology for genealogists http://www3.telus.net/Jgen/jlog.html Gene Young wrote: Leon Chapman wrote: Mark: I would recommend installing in a new Directory (e.g., c:\Legacy7\) Back up your existing Legacy 6 database and picture files. RE: [LegacyUG] Huge Master Source List (was Source titling question)
Cliff, Interesting questions. Let me tell a little about my experience. Firstly, like others, I sure wish we had the SourceWriter when I first started doing sources. We didn't have it, so we did the best we could, and hopefully achieved some degree of consistency. At the very least, entering a source with the general information. So I've got a lot of sources - thousands, which has taken years to research and enter. Since I haven't had the source conversion tool available, I've been getting more acquainted with the SourceWriter simply by recreating my existing sources. There's no way that I'm going to go through my entire master source list, along with all of its citations, to convert them to the new format. Not all at once anyway. Rather, as I'm working on an existing family, I will spend the time to recreate the sources/citations. I can't tell you all how many new things I've noticed in my documents by doing it this way. While the documents didn't change, my perspective of them has, and I've noticed that in my original citations, I didn't include everything that was relevant. The SourceWriter has not only helped me enter all of the information correctly, but it has given me a second chance to review my documents. Next, when I'm adding in new people, I just use the SourceWriter. No conversion tool necessary. As we developed the SourceWriter templates, we did our best to correctly interpret the models as shown in Elizabeth Mills' Evidence Explained. Some things were difficult to interpret. Many things provide a lot of flexibility and so we tried to incorporate all of this the best we could. Sometimes there are fields that are difficult to understand without understanding more about the source type. For example, what is a Series, or Collection, or Record Group? So to try to help the Legacy user understand what goes in the fields, you'll notice the faint gray text inside the data entry boxes. Also, if you hover your cursor on top of the field label, a yellow tool tip will appear showing the entire example. We've built in hint tools that will be developed. In other words, if you have a question about which source type to select, you'll be able to just click on a little question mark button where frequently asked questions about the source type will be answered. This will come with time. Also, while Evidence Explained has hundreds of models, not every model includes an example of how to cite each medium. For example, one of the models in the book might explain how to cite the record on microfilm, but doesn't cover the same source as a database or an online image. Our first release of the SourceWriter contains the templates for most of the models in the book. We will be next working to fill in all of the missing media so every source type has a full range of media from which to choose. Just some of my thoughts Thanks, Geoff Rasmussen Millennia Corporation [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.LegacyFamilyTree.com -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Clifford Andrew Sent: Thursday, June 05, 2008 8:03 AM To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Huge Master Source List (was Source titling question) Dear LUG: Well, I for one, would like to use the Source Writer feature of Legacy 7 Deluxe. As a result and for consistency, I probably won't be using the Source Writer at this time. It will require more investigation. Either way is fine with me, you choose. Thanks Ken McGinnis Millennia Corporation [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com We are changing the world of genealogy! It's like you say, it shows up sometimes. Same with the internet connection. Also the occasional error box about running scripts from IE. I'm compiling a bug list as I go although I don't know how soon the Legacy folk will be ready to receive it. :-) It's getting fairly long and it's not even about the maps as I've turned them off for now. -- JL JLog - simple computer technology for genealogists http://www3.telus.net/Jgen/jlog.html Cathy wrote: Hi JL, You can share the geo database. You just have to tell each Legacy version where to find it. If you have IE7 on your computer, then the blank map occasionally is a bit of a mystery. I've experienced it as have some other beta testers but we can't reliably reproduce to work out what is causing it occasionally. Either closing out of the Location list and going back in or sometimes closing Legacy and reopening usually sorts it. Some just say - patience. It does take longer to come up the first time you use it in an updated version. Occasionally Legacy forgets that you have an internet connection. Not sure what causes that either. It's only an occasional problem Cathy At 01:58 AM 5/06/2008, you wrote: Why is there no map showing when I click Show Map in the Master Location list? Re: [LegacyUG] Geo Location
There's a Beta for MapCrucher based on Microsoft Virtual Earth. A free download goggle for it. You can zoom in and it will display location on the cross hairs. Great if you want exact location information for house, cemetery, hospital, etc. If you can find it on the map you then get the longitude, latitude. john Cathy wrote: Hi Martin, The Geo Location list hasn't been updated since introduced and is just a guide which may be helpful particularly in the US. I don't use it. I prefer to research locations for myself - and the mapping has made it easier to explore the neighbourhood once you've found it. So now my locations are slowly getting Lats and Longs added from the mapping. Cathy At 08:10 PM 4/06/2008, you wrote: I have just upgraded to Legacy 7 so thought I would give Geo Location another try. It shows up correctly within the parentheses in the final source-citation. Note: There is a glitch to be aware of. There is no space after the closing parenthesis and the following text. Adding a space at the start of the next element of the citation detail will insert a space there, but it will also insert an unwanted space in the bibliography. I have reported it via this list a while ago, so hopefully it will be fixed in due course. Re: [LegacyUG] German Locations
Isn't Kirche Church? I think you have an extra comma. Evangelical-Reform Church in Edenkoben ... Sometimes churches, cemeteries etc are in VE and it will map a location that includes them but sometimes you have to go for the town. If the location has a current street before the town name, VE will usually find that street. However, regardless of how a location is entered, VE can do weird things and place the pin in another country or area altogether. Just as well we can override the automatic find and I suggest that if you do use the automatic find, that you check every single location carefully.
