[LegacyUG] Report wording

2008-08-17 Thread glove
Has anyone noticed on say a descendant report that marriages that have a
source with a surety level of 0 but still a name for the spouse read 'XXX
married someone YYY'?
Whilst this is possibly a reasonable reflection of the uncertainty it
doesn't make sense. Surely it would be better to read 'XXX married someone,
possibly YYY'. Then maybe as the surety level increases it could change to
'probably'.

Re: [LegacyUG] Source Writer for Newspapers > Online archives (issued by the publisher)

2008-08-17 Thread Dede Holden
If you want to add notes to a repository, you need to click on Edit in the
Repository window, then choose the Notes tab. Once you enter notes using
the Notes tab, they will then appear in this Notes window when you look at
the repository.

[LegacyUG] Publishing Center Books/Footnotes

2008-08-17 Thread Thomas Herson

Two problems with displaying sources in books:

1. I have chosen the source citations to ne displayed as footnotes at the
bottom of each page. For the most part this works fine however the book
displays 3 source citations in the section of the book called Source
Citations. The citations are numbered 1, 2, and 3. These names of these
three citations do not agree with footnotes 1, 2, or 3 following any of the
chapters. How do I find out what is causing these 3 citations to print so I
can fix them.

2. I have discovered that the footnotes cited on the last page of each
chapter of a book do NOT show on the bottom of that last page but instead
are shown on the first page of the next chapter.

To cite a particular example. footnotes 1565 and 1566 of chapter X do
not show at the bottom of the last page of chapter X. Instead they show as
the first two footnotes at the bottom of the first page of chapter Y
followed by footnotes 1, 2, 3, etc. that are applicable to chapter Y.

It apopears that there are real problems with the book feature's
footnote/source displays.

Have Legacy's tech people already discovered this?

[LegacyUG] Events/Facts to Multiple People

2008-08-17 Thread Gavin Nicholson
Hello all,

I am a new user of Legacy and I am currently updating my information in the
program. I have been using the source clipboard extensively and it is a
godsend for speeding up multiple entries. I am now looking at my census
information and wondering if there is a way to assign the same event/fact to
multiple people at once or a clipboard system so I can paste in the
identical details quickly. This problem arises for other events such as
residence as well.

Thanks for your help,

Re: [LegacyUG] Events/Facts to Multiple People

2008-08-17 Thread Brian/Support

Gavin,

Legacy does have an Event Clipboard. When you have added the event to
one person and have added the source for that event look in the lower
right of the Event Screen. You will see Icons for copying the Event to
the Event Clipboard and for pasting from the Event clipboard.

Move to the next person, Click Add to add and event and then use the
paste Icon to paste the copied event (including the source you set up)
to that person.

NOTE: The Event clipboard is not like a real clipboard. The only thing
Legacy stores on the Event Clipboard is a pointer to the Event. When you
paste is uses that pointer to find the Event to copy. If you delete the
original event the clipboard will not be able to find it to paste a copy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Selecting order FGRs are printed? Possible?

2008-08-17 Thread Brian/Support

Robert,

We have an enhancement suggestion in our recording system to add a sort
order to the batch printing of FGS reports. I did not see an order like
you have proposed ie. by ancestral lines. The suggested sorting is by
Surname, MRIN and a suggestion that they be organized in Descendant
Order (a little like a Descendant Narrative report sequence) like
Brother's Keeper uses.

Re: [LegacyUG] Source Writer for Newspapers > Online archives (issued by the publisher)

2008-08-17 Thread Jessica Morgan
Thanks Brian.
Is there not an area where you can make detail notes on a repository
item that does not flow to all instances of that repository?

Example if I want to note that the repository is my personal
library on 1,000 items, the way it is set up now is fine.

If I want to note on 20 of those 1,000 items that they are located on
"Shelf 1 of master library", is there not a place to do that
individually?
I was expecting the notes section on the respository tab to allow me to do that.

Re: [LegacyUG] Intro or Cover Letter for Decendants Report

2008-08-17 Thread Brian/Support

Joshua,

Elizabeth is correct. If you use the Publishing Center (A Deluxe only
feature) in Legacy 6 or 7 you can have an Introduction to the Report
which can be anything you want. The Introduction will then be part of
the Report PDF file so it cannot get lost or forgotten.

To enter the Introduction:
Reports > Publishing Center
Click on the Additional Tab
You will see the Introduction there. It will print after the Table of
Contents. The other items on that tab will precede the Table of Contents.

If you use the File > Load or File Open menu item on the Introduction
Screen you can read in a text or .rtf file so you can keep your list of
things that you are unsure of in a file and read that into the
introduction as required. You could even have separate files for each of
your ancestral lines etc.

great. However, these reports are never perfect or complete. (No genealogy is, and I'm
often sending these out because I know or suspect problems!)

So anyway, it is important for me to put in notes so that I don't enrage relatives. Things like "I know I'm missing all of Dorrie's step-children", or "I haven't yet entered all the information of Rolf's family tree" or "I'm not sure about the spelling of Great-Gran Pat's last name" or whatever it is. Right now, I put that stuff in email that has the PDF attached. But often it is lost or ignored. (People forward the PDF on to others without including my email, or the print out the PDF and review it long after forgetting what was in the email, or something.)

I'd really like to put that information on the title page of the report, but I
don't see how I can put in a paragraph or three of text on that page. Does
anyone know of a way to do this? Is that a reasonable feature for a future

[LegacyUG] Books/Print Order When Printing Duplex

2008-08-17 Thread Thomas Herson
I just tried printing a very small book in the duplex mode (double-sided
printing)

Pages were printed double-sided in this order:

Chapter One printed as pages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Chapter Two prints on page 6

Source Citations prints on page 7

Bibliography prints on page 8

Name Index prints on page 9

Nothing prints on page 10

Location Index prints on page11

Title Page prints on the back of page 11 iwth no page number

Table of Contents prints on it's on page with no page number

My questions are:

 Why the blank page 10?
Why is page 11 printing on the back of the Title Page?

Graham,

The "XXX married someone" is used when there is a marriage entered but
no name for the spouse. When you add a spouse YYY it should have changed
to just XXX married YYY.

Find that family, open the marriage information and click on the Wording
Options tab. If you see married someone for the first marriage and next
married someone for subsequent marriages remove the someone from those
lines.

The surety of a source has no influence on the marriage wording.

Jessica,

The only thing that can be entered for a repository, and this is at the
Master Source Level, is the Call Number. If "Shelf 1 of master library"
is the way you find individual items in your library you could enter
that as the "Call Number" for the sources in your own library. Typically
the call number would be the number from the repository's catalogue for
a specific book or document.

Re: [LegacyUG] Attaching PDF file

2008-08-17 Thread JLB
There are a variety of 'galleries' in Legacy. Where do you want to
attach the pdf to? If Death Notes, for instance, look for the '+' sign
next to the Death information field. Choose Death Pictures. (I know,
it doesn't make any sense, but never mind.) Then look for the File icon
at the top right and browse for the location of your pdf. In order to
keep linked documents actually linked to Legacy, it helps to have them
in an undisturbed folder somewhere. Otherwise, they can get renamed and
moved around and pretty soon you'll forget what you did with them. In
the case of an obit though I would be more likely to copy and paste the
text out of it directly into Death Notes instead of linking the pdf.
Although I might still link the pdf as a source detail document instead.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting update

2008-08-17 Thread DimJim
While trying to update my Legacy Charting to 7.0.118 today I have
encountered the same problem as described below.
I think the update installs into the program file where the first
pre-release was installed. I have uninstalled that pre-release
edition, but when updating from 7.0.110, I end up with TWO instances
of Legacy Charting installed - one within the c\Legacy7 folder and the
other in the c\program files\millenia folder.
Has anyone stumbled across a "fix" for this yet?
I was thinking of uninstalling Legacy V7 and then downloading and
installing the latest from the Legacy site with (hopefully) Charting
7.0.118 included and the whole shibang might get installed into the
c\Legacy folder.
Any words of wisdom?

By "similar to the way pictures are" I take it you mean add them to event
sources, if so go to Detailed Sources>Multimedia and instead of using the
Picture Icon use the File Icon. You can also access this screen from the

[LegacyUG] ... Legacy 7, file/folder sharing ... Jim Hughes

2008-08-17 Thread Jim Hughes
Good Day ...

... I hope all is well

... your help is required about the following:

1. I have Legacy Family Tree 7 installed on five computers in my house.
2. I will only have one computer open at a time.
3. I want the capability to work on Legacy Family Tree 7 from any house
computer and, I want to be assured that
I'm working on the 'latest' copy of the file.
4. So, I want to 'share' Legacy, but, do not know the steps for doing such.
5. Would some kind soul walk me through the process?
6. Four computers have XP Home, OE 7; the fifth computer has Vista Home

What do you mean by 'share'? The best idea I've heard on this list is
to keep the Legacy file on a flash-drive and move that from computer to
computer so you always know where you're at. How to update your file
between computers would require something more complex I imagine, like
having them all networked.

Kevin,

I suspected that might be your response, and I appreciate knowing that
you also do not intend to branch into the iPhone arena.  It will be
interesting to see whether anyone tries to provide a decent

market cornered in the Windows Mobile area, and rightfully so.  Keep up

RE: [LegacyUG] Portable genealogy

2008-08-17 Thread KevinRPhillips
John,

For your sake I hope someone will. however, genealogy software for handheld
devices is pretty specialized and not something that is going to make some
developer a lot of quick cash. I initially wrote Pocket Genealogist for my
own use and then realized that it would be something others could use. (Not
fully realizing how much time it would take to operate a software company)
Your best bet is that some genealogist/developer would do the same for the
iPhone.

I try and keep track of what software is available for each of the
platforms and we keep a list on our website as a courtesy for people who
don't have a Windows Mobile device. If you do hear of anything else please
let us know so we can update the information.

http://www.northernhillssoftware.com/EN/Marketing/competition.htm

We actually get a fair number of emails asking about Blackberry devices,
for example, but as far as we know there is nothing available.

Re: [LegacyUG] ... Legacy 7, file/folder sharing ... Jim Hughes

2008-08-17 Thread John Carter
There are three common options for sharing Legacy files among multiple
computers.

1. The files are on a USB hard drive or memory stick which is moved from
PC to PC.

The other two options require having a home network and remembering one
key restriction - Legacy does *not* have a multi-user daabase.

2. One PC is *always* on. The folder containing Legacy is shared on the
network and all computers use it - but ONLY ONE PC AT A TIME. This PC
should have a UPS adequate to keep it running long enough for a proper
shutdown; most UPS units come with software that can read the status of
the unit and shutdown the PC.

3. You have a network-enabled hard drive that is always on an can be
accessed by the computers on the network - again ONLY ONE PC AT A TIME.
The network drive unit should have a UPS and be able to be shutdown by the
UPS just as a PC would be.

Each computer can either use the files on the shared drive or you can copy
the network files to the computer at which you are working and copy it
back to the network drive when you finish.

Regardless of the option used, always make a backup of the changed files
on the computer you used to make changes. This ensures that you have a
backup of the most current data if something happens to the shared copy.
This is especially important with "always on" devices because they will
likely fail sooner than the devices which see interittent use.

John ...

Great stuff! Thank you.

It's always good to hear from a 'seasoned user' ...

I understand your directions. I also understand your concern for file
integrity; both appreciated.

Take care.

RE: [LegacyUG] Attaching PDF file

2008-08-17 Thread Gavin Nicholson
It should be noted that the FILE option is only available to deluxe users.
Otherwise, you can work around it by selecting "sound" or "video" and then
selecting the PDF file. The only problem with this is that you have a sound
or video icon for it, however, it does launch your PDF viewer correctly when
you double-click on it.

Cheers,

Gavin.

[LegacyUG] Invisible setting

I have build 7.0.0.41. Is this one of the things that was corrected in the

I need to correct this to avoid some irate people!

[LegacyUG] event pictures

After moving all my Event pictures from Legacy's picture folder to a

[LegacyUG] Descendant Report

2008-08-17 Thread Ruth Nerud
I've said before I'm attempting to create a Descendant Report for a cousin.
Her parents were cousins; there are many marriages in both sides of the
family where the persons are related. I've encountered two problems.

As the report is being generated, I get a window that says:
Marriage of XXX and YYY
This marriage has now been processed 3 times.
You could be in an endless loop.
Please note this MRIN ### so you can check into it later.
Continue Processing
Cancel the Report

I've created this report many times in previous Versions but since Version
7, I get this message. The Help screen says to click the Report Options
button on the menu and select the Don't Repeat Duplicate Lines option on the
Format tab.

This feature Don't Repeat Duplicate Lines is grayed out in the Descendant
Report so I can't select it.

I don't really know what problems this is creating, but I also have this
problem:

In one chapter, the Father is no. 73. Under him are his children, no.'s 85
and 86. So if I look at 85 and 86 they are for different people. This report
has 17 chapters. This happens in over half the chapters; the other chapters,
they are numbered correctly. I'm using the same Report Options for each
chapter.

Has anyone else had these problems?

I wasn't clear on the second point. If my Dad is No. 73 and under him I'm

the information about me - marriage, children, etc. and the same for 86, my

Sorry, that's the one - Descendant Book Report. I've reset the report
options with no change except of course now the source numbers are
consecutive instead of the same source number when the source is repeated
within the report, so I've got 170,000 sources instead of just under 600
sources listed. I had generated the original report before Ver. 7 came out
but didn't start working on it until just recently. I hate to gedcom my
database into Family Tree Maker because not everything transfers correctly.
I'm not all that good at computer stuff. I wish I knew when the next update
was going to come out. Some of this hopefully will get fixed.

consecutive instead of the same source number when the source is
repeated within the report, so I've got 170,000 sources instead of
just under 600 sources listed. I had generated the original report
before Ver. 7 came out but didn't start working on it until just
recently. I hate to gedcom my database into Family Tree Maker because
not everything transfers correctly. I'm not all that good at computer
stuff. I wish I knew when the next update was going to come out. Some
of this hopefully will get fixed.

Re: [LegacyUG] Portable genealogy

2008-08-17 Thread hwedhlor

Kevin,

I will be happy to pass along anything I learn about available
applications for the iPhone.  I started out with Palm devices so long
ago that I've stuck with GEDStar Pro, and done beta work for them.  The
iTouch was purchased for another purpose.  The Clié is getting a bit
long in the tooth, and I have been moving much of what I carry to the
iTouch as an alternative, and am doing beta testing for Astraware,
having done that for their Palm-based software for some time now.  If
the Clié gives out I'll be able to justify a Windows Mobile device, and
then I will be a happy customer of yours.

Incidentally, the only genealogy application that I know of for the
iPone/iPod Touch platform is MobileFmilyTree, which sells via the Apple
iTunes App Store.  The program is offered by Synium Software GmbH in
both English and German, but requires that you also have a licensed
version of their Mac program, MacFamilyTree, which means you must be
running a MacIntosh PC.

  John,

  For
your sake I hope someone will… however, genealogy
software for handheld devices is pretty specialized and not something
that is
going to make some developer a lot of quick cash.   I initially wrote
Pocket Genealogist for my own use and then realized that it would be
something
others could use.  (Not fully realizing how much time it would take to
operate
a software company)   Your best bet is that some genealogist/developer
would do the same for the iPhone.

   I
try and keep track of what software is available for
each of the platforms and we keep a list on our website as a courtesy
for
people who don’t have a Windows Mobile device.  If you do hear of
anything else please let us know so we can update the information.

  We
actually get a fair number of emails asking about  Blackberry
devices, for example, but as far as we know there is nothing available.

  Kevin,

I suspected that might be your response, and I appreciate knowing that
you also
do not intend to branch into the iPhone arena.  It will be interesting
to
see whether anyone tries to provide a decent genealogical program for
the
iPhone hardware.  You certainly have the market cornered in the Windows
Mobile area, and rightfully so.  Keep up the good work.

  John,

  No,
we’re not planning on doing an iPhone version
either… There’s 9 years worth of development effort in Pocket
Genealogist and we aren’t going to replicate that on another
platform.  (Besides, the list of requested enhancements for Pocket
Genealogist is plenty to keep us busy for years!)

  The
iPhone is getting a lot of attention at the moment, but
it’s still a relatively small market.   Also Microsoft
isn’t about to give up its lead without a fight… now that they have
some  competition shaking things up it’ll get interesting to see
what’s coming in the next couple of versions of Windows Mobile.
