RE: [LegacyUG] A ? about picture gallery,etc.
Mary, Legacy only allows for three sizes of thumbnails in Reports, it is designed for pictures rather than text based certificates etc. In any even to make them readable they would be too large for most reports. You can insert them by exporting as an rtf and importing into Word or OpenOffice.org and adding them there. Rich, Thank you for your interest in the error 91 problem. I have never GEDCOM'd (using the acronym as a verb) anyone into my database. Each one has been entered by me. I have 5727 individuals. [LegacyUG] Merge 2 Legacy FDB databases
Hi Ron, I finally got a GEDCOM file from the FTW file last week and imported the data into a clean Legacy database. After some data cleansing I now want to merge the two files, my questions are; 1. As there is a small number of duplicates between the two files, what will happen when the files are merged, will one record overwrite the other or will they happily co-exist, which I can delete later? 2. Will Legacy happily increment the RIN and MRIN's? 3. What else will Legacy do that I don't know? There are no source records etc only names, dates and places. RE: [LegacyUG] Merge 2 Legacy FDB databases
Branko and Chris, 1) You will be given the opportunity to merge the duplicates, selecting which bits you wish to import into your existing file - may take a bit of practice to get used to it, but worthwhile. 2) Yes, depending on your selection it may or may not use empty RINs, otherwise they will be added to the end. If you merge a new file into an existing one the imported file will be deleted. 3) No sure! I'm too familiar with the program to think the unthinkable ;-). I've used PSPad for years and it is still my preferred html etc. editor. It has hardly ever been updated, so was even more impressive when first released. Will, It appears to be a glitch in the software. In the Evidence Explained QuickCheck Models which use the term Collection (and on which the Legacy templates are based), the name of the collection appears in the full citation, not just the bibliography/source list. See pp. 312 and 318 of EE. I would experiment with other church record templates, or other data fields in the template you've chosen, to see if they will come closer to what you want. Every once in a while, it doesn't. That is usually a problem with your computer, not Legacy. The usual fix, as for many niggling problems, is to shut down the computer and restart. Just as for modems that occasionally have connection problems, computers often need a moment to reset their spines, so to speak. Re: [LegacyUG] Ubiquitous error 91
As I said, I was guessing, but knowing I have never created/added a person named 'Unknown', so all of the ones in my Lugacy DB are placeholders create by the program itself. Since they showed up after I had a crash, and I had 3 backups a few months apart; because my old computer, being too small to hold all my DBs at the same time, when I merged all onto the new bigger drive, with many duplicates expected, I found many 'Unknowns' added to single parents (spouse Unk.) and parentless children (both par. added); so I went through and unlinked the ones that showed up in the 'Name List'. I also unlinked the 'Unk - Unk' parents, since I had no source for them to create them. I understand the display for the program showing 'Unknown' for blank fields, but on thinking this furthur, I would prefer the computer change it's naming system to 'No data found'. Then those people who would like to create an 'Unknown' can see which they have missed, and those who do not, will see the reminder to fix it, and choices to print/not the above stuff. It would work the same way that print/not living works. Using the marriage list, for the husbands I have 4 pages (scrolls) of Unknown husbands, but 23 pages of Unknown wifes. I have 'unlinked' the Unknown/Unknown couples from the parentless people, then deleted the marriage of those MRINs. Since 'Unknown' is accepted by the LDS (with good reasonings behind it), I don't want to change the system, just what Legacy does with my data. I seem to be having a problem making myself clear here. Sorry about that. Here's the problem. First of all, I keep the Windows Taskbar hidden except when moused over - to maximize screen real estate. 1. Load Legacy. Have a look at something, then minimize it to the Taskbar. 2. Go somewhere else using one side of the monitor area. (Taskbar is not immediately visible). 3. Find something half an hour later that I'd like to enter in Legacy and click on the *Desktop* icon visible on the part of the monitor that's not being used. 4. Nothing happens. At this point, I can't remember if Legacy is still loaded or not. 5. Wonder why the Legacy screen isn't appearing, then check the Taskbar. 6. Click on the Taskbar entry for Legacy and it appears. My question - every other program will re-appear/Maximize/Appear in a window (without having to access or click on anything in the Taskbar) once it's loaded, when the *Desktop* icon is clicked. Why won't Legacy? To summarize, The Taskbar entry for Legacy works just fine, but the Desktop icon only works for initially loading the program, not restoring it. Why not? Can this be changed? Hi Helen: As I see it, when you open Legacy then minimize it, then click on the Desktop Icon, you are actually trying to open Legacy a second time. Some applications do allow you to open them more than once, e.g. Word and Xcel. I feel if Legacy let you do that, you could mess up your data. Re: [LegacyUG] Suggested improvement or is it just me?
I admit I was a little confused by your first post, but you clarified that pretty quickly. Messages don't appear instantly, though, so you'll probably get quite a few more replies to your original message while things filter through. I've never worked the way you describe, so I gave it a try. Actually, only two of the programs I have running right now (of six -- one of them being Legacy) behaved the way you would want them to. Nothing happened with the rest of them, with the exception of Firefox which opened a *new* window, but which did not focus on the window I already had opened and minimized. Actually, I think the behavior you're describing is a bad idea. There are a few programs -- which you apparently aren't using -- that will start again with the result being that you have two instances of the same program running. I think I've seen this behavior with Bygones, but I couldn't swear to it. Every once in awhile, I'll lose the *taskbar* button for a program I *know* is running -- doesn't happen very often and I don't know why, but that's beside the point. Using ALT + TAB I can find it again, but I certainly don't want to start a second instance of the program -- if it would even start at all. I use ALT + TAB a lot to cycle through open programs and it's great -- and nice and quick if you're a keyboard person. Perhaps this will help you? Not necessarily... If Outlook Express is running in the task bar and you double click the Icon on the desktop then another copy is not started but the one in the task bar is brought up, so it would seem that Legacy could do this too. I wouldn't want multiple copies of OE or Legacy to be running either but some programs will allow you to have multiple copies running which can be a good thing in a lot of cases. Re: [LegacyUG] Source Defaults
No argument with different people doing things differently, I would just like the option to set certain master sources at higher level than most of my sources. The option could be included as part of the Master Source Definition. Before I make suggestions to Support, I wanted to be sure I had not overlooked something. I am just trying to make things easier for me to enter info. When I ALWAYS rank certain sources as 4, it would be so much easier it I had that option. Ditto for the date. It would simply be an option, and you could always override today's date or unclick the option. I am trying to not have to use the mouse so much. Since they changed the way to save a source to an event (now have to use the mouse), it has been very difficult and time-consuming for we disabled to enter source details, although I understand that they probably did that to male it easier to paragraph in the source detail. Double-clicking on the desktop icon tells the computer to start another copy of the program. You shouldn't want to have two copies of the program running at once. Most other programs just bring up the existing program that's been minimized. I've never had that problem. But two instances of Logacy would be preferable, to me anyway, than the split screen thing, with two different files appearing in the same screen. But that's beside the point. Helen, I am aware of the behaviour which you describe, and from memory it only happens when one has one of its other screens open, and this minimises separately to the main screen. I have my taskbar vertically on the left and there is a little box with a black cross on it at the bottom left - which would suggest it would be at the bottom right on a default taskbar - this is the other screen. It only happens with certain screens and in certain circumstances. I cannot say when, but I have just tried to reproduce it, and naturally can't! I'll try and remember to make a note next time it happens. Yes, but then you don't have all the other files that are associated with your FDB file. You need to back all of them up too, or you have lost multitudes of information. And, because the normal backup file is zipped, you have no way of knowing which other files to also back up manually. I guess all of us need to name our family files by date and time since we will have to come up with a new name every time we back up. ANY copy of your file that you make can serve as a backup. You can place it in a folder named backup, copy to a flash or portable hard drive, or use your CD (which I also don't recommend ad the primary storage place, but that is another discussion) and so on. Then using any number of methods (Copy/paste, right-click and drag, File_Save As, etc.) place a *copy* of the .fdb file in that location, renaming it if desired so it can be differentiated from the master file. There are many ways to skin the backup cat and while some may take a few extra clicks or be a bit more complex to accomplish, it is certainly not something worth getting all worked up over or say you can't backup. A bug like this can only get fixed after it can be duplicated and understood, and so far (that I know) the Legacy people have not been able to duplicate the environment that causes it. Until they can, those who are affected need to use some kind of workaround. [LegacyUG] Saving group sheets in RTF format
Does anyone else have a need to save Group Sheets in RTF format? In working on a book with a word processor, I want to include family group sheets (along with various other reports) for several individuals and naturally want their names listed in the book's index. If group sheets could be saved in RTF format, it would embed indexing codes which would enable the names of individuals on the group sheets to be included in the index when it is generated. The problem with running more than one instance of a database program is that there's a good chance of messing up your database if both copies try to access the same database at the same time. - Original Message - From: Kris gen.mailing.li...@gmail.com To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Sent: Tuesday, March 03, 2009 5:26 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Suggested improvement or is it just me? Rich, You are correct it is more of an Access question and is basically a safety precaution to stop two open programs amending the DB at the same time - which would cause more problems than I would care to think about. I wouldn't want multiple copies of OE or Legacy to be running either but some programs will allow you to have multiple copies running which can be a good thing in a lot of cases. [LegacyUG] Legacy7 is incompatible with GEDCOM
I have Lecacy 7.0.0.86 on my laptop with my most up-to-date file. I have Lecacy 7.0.0.40 (from Legacy install CD) on my desktop computer. I want to export via GEDCOM from laptop to desktop. I tried first export to GEDCOM with type of file: Produce File For: (1st) Legacy then (2nd) GEDCOM5.5 only then (3rd) basic then (4th) generic. None of the 4 GEDCOM types created by Legacy would import into Legacy. -- Richard Van Wasshnova http://www.gencircles.com/users/vanwasshnova http://gw.geneanet.org/vanwasshnova Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp
[LegacyUG] New Laptop - Installation Summary Sheet?
Hi Sherry, et al: I'm a fairly happy user of V.7.0.0.86 and am about to replace my old laptop. The Desktop will remain my primary computer with backups to a D drive and a memory stick. The laptop is wireless-connected and will be used as another backup and for field work and teaching. Both use XP Pro. Two questions - I find the LUG full of suggestions to the point of confusion. Maybe you have a summary sheet. The On-line Help Install To A Different Location refers to Legacy5Setup.exe - are these instructions applicable to Ver. 7? 1. Should I load the original Legacy 7.0 program from my disk and then up-date it from the 'net, copy and then load the current program and data files using a memory stick, or do a full backup and restore? Should I hold off a week or two for a new up-date or go with it as is? It's been a while since version .86 came out and we still have expectations. 2. How do you suggest we name and organize the data files. I want the desktop and laptop to be identical for clean backups. A few years ago I started a small genealogy group in my community and have ended up tutoring Legacy some. One of the most difficult parts for new users is entering the data in a way that will give them the results they would like. I may have some suggestions I'd be glad to discuss off-line. Thanks, Hugh

I think you will. Legacy has no way of knowing which of your pictures went to another location. If you were simply moving the whole folder to a new location Legacy could help you. Individual pics, I don't think so. - JL JLog - simple computer technology for genealogists http://www.jgen.ws/jlog momalo...@aol.com wrote: If I create subfolders for each grandparents name, will I have to re-link each file? assuming that they ate still in the Legacy Pictires folder? or subfolder? But it might help you somewhat if you use the Picture Center. Re: [LegacyUG] Error 91 revisited
It may be a bit more complex to set up but you can also backup the associated files (and multimedia files) associated with the FDB file. It is not difficult to look into an existing backup file to see the individual files contained therein. (And I believe they will all start with the same name as the family file anyway) Once you know the names, there are a multitude of backup programs, including freeware such as Karen's Replicator, where you can create a job to automatically copy designated files and folders to various locations. The advantage of zipping is three fold. It compresses the data to take up less space (not a big issue with modern hard drives), it puts them into *one* file which is a bit easier to copy to additional places if desired and can be given unique names for archival purposes, and Legacy will recognize it and restore from a zip backup rather than having to manually unzip back to the Legacy data folder (or where ever you save the master file). However, one can accomplish the same purpose of backing up without zipping. And if desired, there are also freeware programs that will zip up the files that are copied, so you can end up with the exact same result. I did not say backing up in this manner was as easy as clicking File_Backup Family File. I said that your statement that because of error 91 that you can't backup is not accurate. I use Replicator and another program named SyncBack SE for my business backups so I have some familiarity with the process. Some people use online backup services such as Mozy or Carbonite. The ins and out so HOW to use those kinds of programs is off-topic for this list. Suffice it to say that after a moderate amount of effort to initially set up, there are relatively easy methods of bypassing the error 91 problem. You need to back all of them up too, or you have lost multitudes of information. And, because the normal backup file is zipped, you have no way of knowing which other files to also back up manually. I guess all of us need to name our family files by date and time since we will have to come up with a new name every time we back up. Re: [LegacyUG] PICTURE coding
My understanding (and it seems to work for me) is that I need to link just ONE of the pictures in the new subfolder. Legacy then knows that this subfolder holds at least one linked picture. It adds this path to the search order and it will then be able to find all the other pictures in that subfolder (as long as the filename has not changed). So it is really quite easy.
