I've created several of these for reunions and family members. And also find that most of my family members seem to spend more time looking at this type a chart to see who they are related to vs just their own ancestry tree. Sometimes people also want to print an "All-In-One Chart" which would include everybody you've recorded in your database. With large databases this is sometimes unpractical because it's just to big. What I do with All-In-One Charts is create subset databases: For example I'll tag a branch of a tree and then tag people I'm not sure if connected but possibly, create a gedcom. Then create an All-In-One Chart. This has been helpful when trying to get others to view the section I'm working and I find it very helpful for myself. Of the charts I use I find I use the above "All-In-One" and via a "All-In-One" chart create a "Blood Relationship Charts" for about 65% of all charts I create. Of the 8 or 9 different packages I've tried in the past only one company seems to do a very good job in this area. Currently we do not have these Chart Types in Legacy. Another type of Chart I've been requested to do is an Hour Glass Chart based on all Children as the center node Ex. 2 Sisters and 1 Brother all married Create an Hour glass Chart that includes all Ancestors of above 3 Children and their spouses and then the direct descendants of the 3 children. A few people have asked for their Charts to be created with their a Step Parent vs their biological parent who skipped out of their lives (that they don't even care about the skipped out biological parent). An All-In-One Chart here is great because you can just delete the unwanted Biological Parent Tree limb (person and their ancestors) from the Chart and your left with the functional Family. The Family Chart Most programs on the market limit their charts to biological ancestors and descendants and their spouses. Based on human nature I would imagine that sometimes a few listed in genealogical databases as biological parents are in fact only the married parents. Charts are great when you can create the kinds of charts "YOU" want to create. I created a Chart to show my mom of all her relatives, she has help me collect info over the last 5 years. The chart ended up being 6 feet high and 20 feet long. She had no idea that we had collected so much info. john Jenny M Benson wrote: rck wrote Hi, is it possible to create an ancestor chart that also shows selected cousins, uncles, aunts, etc.? I have a family in which the last child was adopted. I went in to the Children's settings and marked her as adopted in relationship to Father and Mother. When I run a Potential Problem Report it shows the child as being born more than 20 years after the parents marriage. The mother would have been to old to have a child at her age anyway. Do I have to unlink the child from the parents or is there another step I should take? At this stage I am not sure who the child's biological parents, I have a good idea but cannot prove it yet/ever. I have found a birth that fits and a notice from a paper telling of the death of a man thrown from a horse who later died and family stories that this man was a family friend. Hi Angela, Many thanks for this info, I will do as you say but will leave the adopted parents as the preferred couple as he took their name and was raised by them. They did leave his original surname as the third christian name. Just had another look through the family file and discovered that I have him already entered as a son to his biological parents. Discovered further problems, the New Zealand BMDs show his birth in 1984 instead of 1894(transposition of figures?) and his mother's name is the adoptive mother's name. Total confusion, I suspect someone was telling porkies!!! I will see if I can contact a family member and ask if anyone now knows what actually happened, I am not holding my breath.. The chap concerned died during the WW1 so he did not marry and there were no children. Thank you for trying to help me. Then go to the child, click on the parent icon. Per your description it should show his aunt and uncle. If you would like, go to bottom of the page. Set relationship to mother as adoptive; and then you could do the same for the 'relationship to father'. Next click "link to existing parents' Select the appropriate parents from the marriage list that pops up. It then returns you to the 'parent screen'. Highlight their names and then you can set their relationship as "biological" Finally click/highlight on whichever couple you wish to show on the family view. This will be the preferred couple. [LegacyUG] Adopted Child
I have just imported a Gedcom file from FTM and was checking that all was OK with the file after the import. I ran a Potential Problems Report and it showed a child who had been born in 1894, three years after the father's death. After some research on the family I discovered that the child was the wife's sister's son (her nephew) and the wife adopted him after the deaths of their husbands who both died in 1891. I have changed the connection to Adopted but would now like to show his real parents. Re: [LegacyUG] Error 508 ... Root Folder?
Ron, This is my last word on this as no doubt there will be a complaint about it being off topic. If you look at the third paragraph in my e-mail you will note I mention stripping the Registry of Nortons. The problem is that you never get it all, they seem to have the ability to insert files that cannot be removed or are named in such a way as to have no connection to Nortons. I can find my way around the Registry without any problem and am experienced in removing programs in this manner I am not the only one that has come up against this problem, I have been in touch with others on forums with the same problem and they all concurred that a format was the only way to get rid of all Nortons files in the registry. Thank you for your thoughts. Colin. - Original Message - From: ronald ferguson To: legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com Sent: Tuesday, March 31, 2009 6:43 PM Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Error 508 ... I got rid of all the left behinds by going into the Register and deleting everything related to the program. I do not recommend doing this if you do not know what you are doing and creating a Restore Point first is essential. Well, that was going to be my final, final suggestion - that the flash drive was beyond it's 'best by' date and it was time to get the stuff off and ditch it in favour of a new one. Lesson for everyone: Don't rely on flash drives for permanent storage! -- Regards, Mike Fry Johannesburg. Should the above read, "There is very little un'used' space in the flash"!! and that the flash drive was full! A right click on the drive in Windows Explorer and click on Properties will tell. Unless I have missed it, so far I have not seen this mentioned. Colin. My daughter by my first husband has his surname on her Birth Certificate and all official records for about the first 10 or 11 years of her life. She then decided she would like to be known by the name Benson, which was that of my second husband and she has used that name exclusively ever since (30+ years and counting!) Because it was her father's name and her birthname it is her first surname which is the main name in my family file and Benson is entered as an AKA but some people might reverse them on the grounds that almost no one knows her by her first surname and she used it for such a small proportion of her life. -- Jenny M Benson I did wonder if that would be the case as it was his second christian name. You should always record the exact spelling used in each document, so the Source for the Marriage should indicate the spelling used on the document you are citing for that, the Source for Birth should indicate the spelling used on the document you are citing for that and so on. As for which spelling you use as the "main" name, I generally use the one found in the Birth documentation unless this varies from "the norm" for that family. For example, one of my main lines is Bloor and because of the local pronunciation was sometimes recorded as Blower. In one instance, one child of a Bloor family has been registered as Blower: I record this fact but still use Bloor as his main name. I know some people would record all the spelling variations as AKAs but personally I do not. I take AKA - Also Known As - literally and use it when a person is actually known by a different name at some point in their life, like for example a person adopting a professional or stage name or a child taking on the surname of their stepfather. I consider these spelling variations to be precisely that, spelling variations, not different names by which the person was known. In earlier times spelling was much more fluid but the basic name was still the same name. -- Jenny M Benson Thanks Jenny, it would appear I am on the same or similar page. I have done what you suggest but also used the AKA. There seems to be two schools of thought there so I will see how it developes. If needs be I will change it later as this is the only one I have like this at the moment. Re: [LegacyUG] LUG ARCHIVES
A little program called System and Internet Washer does the trick. www.ewasher.net/ $34-95 for the latest version and Free for the earlier version! Best way for Internet Explorer - shut IE down, right click on the link on the desktop, select PROPERTIES, then under BROWSING HISTORY, select DELETE, then pick your item(s) to delete (I usually do a DELETE ALL, but that can also get rid of SOME useful cookies - your choice). Yes, you can do this cleanup with IE up and running, but . . . And once your cache is purged, empty your trash can too (er - I guess it is called recycle bin now). Then restart IE. You MIGHT also want to try deleting your Windows TEMP folder, but this SHOULD NOT impact the browser - usually! There are tools for this, but I don't recall them. I usually delete them manually, but that's risky if you don't know what you are doing, so I'm not gonna go into details on that process. (On a side note - having a bunch of junk in your Windows TEMP folder can cause your PC to run slow or even weird. Wish I could remember the "preferred tool" for purging it, but my mind is blank at the moment - sorry) Bob - Original Message - From: "Dawn Crowley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Tuesday, May 27, 2008 10:52 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] LUG ARCHIVES > The initial screen looks normal, but the search result is forbidden. > ronald ferguson wrote: > >>Dick, >> >>In a nutshell "No". I normally installed previous versions of Legacy in a folder called: C:\winprog\Legacyx (where "x" is the version number) And, since there are problems w Legacy ver 6 when it is installed on Vista, I figured staying with this same directory naming convention would be a wise choice for Legacy ver 7 The laptop that I'll be installing it on is running Vista. The desktop where I just installed it is running XP (it is my understanding that we are still allowed to install it on both a home unit and a laptop). The install appeared to go OK, and Legacy did, in fact, install into C:\winprog\Legacy HOWEVER, the charting program installed into: C:\Program Files\Millennia\LegacyCharting7 I don't even remember seeing a prompt to override this. I transferred 63,000 names from Rootsweb to Legacy about a month ago. My Rootsweb database represented 8 years of diligent research. Apart from some small glitches, the transfer went fairly well... I thought. Today, I was updating my Rootsweb database using the new Legacy program and found some missing data from my "Notes" section. Over the years, I have copied sections of books and related research info into the "notes" section of Rootsweb... no problem. Now, when I check some of the ancestors who had lengthy notes, the notes section in Legacy is BLANK. How can this be Please tell me there is a small button somewhere that I need to push. Since I transferred my database to Legacy, I have added lots more info, so my old Rootsweb database contains only what I had a month ago. So, there's no going back. Oh good grief... I sure hope someone can help me out of this mess/disaster. Carol from Arizona -- Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight? Get new twists on family favorites at AOL Food. There is indeed a *much* faster method! Just click on the little box bottom right of the family view that shows "M:" of "M:nnn" (where n is the MRIN of the current couple on screen) and the Goto MRIN box will pop up. The other 2 boxes, each side of the "M:nnn" one show "H:nnn" and/or "W:nnn" which are the RINs of the husband and wife but you can click on either of them to enter a RIN for any individual, you don't have to click on the H button to go to a male or W button to go to a female. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp -- No virus found in this incoming message. In Legacy, you can have many of the screens show, at all times, the relationship to a person in the database. Most people would choose themselves. Then most of the time, they can see at a glance how the person/people they are editing is related to them. That is why you would pick a particular person. (Note that this feature is different from the Relationship Calculator, where you can pick any 2 people and find out how, if at all, they are related, including multiple relationships.) I use my oldest child so that I can see relationships displayed for my lines AND my husband's lines. Also note that you can also set up to use the "standard" ancestor colours for the 4 gg-parent lines. I also set that to my oldest child so that it matches with the relationships. These are also displayed on many screens, and can be used (optionally) on many reports. Hope this clarifies a bit! > I note you mention using your oldest child as a starting point for relationship calculation, somone else mentioned that also. Ron, I don't get that option when I right click in his main panel, all I get are two options, Add a husband or Edit the marriage and neither allow me to remove the "Unknown" Margaret on the list suggested I alter the Data Format in Options and tick Leave Blank and this has worked once I shut the program down and restarted. Hi Anne, Many thanks for your reply to my query. Another Legacy user wrote to me direct with similar reasons for combining my files and it confirms my thoughts plus gives me a better insight to Legacy and it's capablilities. Again my thanks for your thoughts. Regards, Colin. - Original Message - From: The Eccles Family To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Sent: Sunday, May 04, 2008 1:37 PM Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Merging family files, advantages/disadvantages Hi Colin, I too, started out with separate files for my family based on my parents and my husband's parents. As you said, each file was easier to keep on separate floppies for backup. With the advent of CD's and DVD's and portable harddrives for backup, space is no longer issue. Also Legacy is different to FTM in that it links to multimedia files (photos etc) rather then including the actual file in its database which FTM used to do. This means that your legacy backup file can be small even if you have a lot of people in your file. Some people have many thousands of people in one file. I now combine all my family into one file for the reasons below. 1. You only have to update someone once, for example your children might be in 2 or 4 files - with 4 files you might need to update their information 4 times. If you only have one file, you only update once. 2. Intermarriages between family members. It was common for families to intermarry. I have many instances where cousins have married this would now make it very difficult to split my file and siblings within two families have married. - two brothers to two sisters etc. Legacy also has the ability to have two or more unconnected trees within the same file. Say you have a great uncle Thomas Moore, you find information on a Tom Moore in the same town but you don't know if he is your Thomas. You can enter his information as a separate person or tree. If later you confirm that they are one and the same you can merge their information. If you find that they are different you can document your finds and delete what you don't want to keep. I hope that this helps. Location List is at View>Mater Lists>Location and gives a list of the locations in your file and who they are connected with. 3. Potential Problem Report is at Tools>Potential Problems and will give you a list of all the potential problems which you choose to search for. Re: [LegacyUG] New User of Legacy seeking advice
Hi Penny, I checked the number in FTM and then after I had done the import and they were all there plus the fact thatall my notes were there too was a bonus. The ony thing I noticed was that some words in the Notes were split and another kind person on this list has told me how to stop that. I am using FTM 2006 which is version 15, I could not see the sense in buying any later version for little if any gain. I will keep FTM running in tandem for a while as there are a number of family members who use this program, who knows I might be able to convert them.{;-) We don't really have a winter here where we live, just a few cooler days over a few weeks. We are well into Autumn and it is 27c, I love it.{;-) Colin. - Original Message - From: Penny To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Sent: Monday, April 28, 2008 10:34 AM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] New User of Legacy seeking advice I don't think I really had any major difficulties, Colin. There were a couple of minor things that didn't quite translate, but the major data was all intact (people were where they were supposed to be in the database & the sources & notes were all attached as I had them, etc.). The very few minor things were easy enough to fix. Check to see how many individuals you have in your FTM db. During import, Legacy will tell you how many it's importing; that way you'll be reassured that all your people made it through. Later (after I'd made enough changes to my file to cause me not to want to do a re-import), I discovered that I wished I had told Legacy to put all my FTM notes into the "research notes" rather than into "general notes". (Something you might want to consider, depending on what your current notes look like and what your preferences are.) What version of FTM are you using? I ran backwards from the latest one - it sounded like a total disaster. My suggestion would be to give exporting a gedcom from FTM a try and see what your import into Legacy looks like. I found that fiddling around with my files after I got them into Legacy was a great way to start learning to use it. No, I don't run FTM at all any more - I found shortly after getting Legacy that FTM didn't fill any needs that Legacy couldn't handle better. (I don't work for 'em ... honest! LOL I just really like the software.) I'm still finding out where all the buttons and hootchits are that make the bells and whistles on Legacy do their thing, but it's not so difficult as to kill the fun.
