[LegacyUG] Residence Event

2008-10-11 Thread Pat
Problem: I want to correctly copy Legacy7 family "Residence" event
information (including the residence notes) to other members of the family.

Question: 1) Should I use a GEDCOM "RESI" tag for my imported Family
residence events or 2) Should I use a tag name of "EVEN" Residence for the
Family residence event?

I am trying to import my existing database, from TMG7, and really don't know
which GEDCOM export option I should use so that I can correctly use Legacy7
Residence "Copy and Paste" capabilities.

[LegacyUG] Importing Picture Negatives into Legacy 7

2008-10-16 Thread Pat
I have some really old negatives that I wish to convert to a picture
positive image and import into Legacy 7.
Do any of you folks know of a good graphics program I can use to convert
picture negatives (using my scanner) to positive picture images?

Thanks Bill,
I have a HP C4280 scanner/printer and the scanned negative looks real good
on the monitor. So far I can't find how to change it to a positive using
just my printer.

I bought a scanner which would handle negatives (needs to shine a light
through
rather than reflect off) and the scanning software does an automatic
convert.

The Infanview program looks very good . I will also try out the
Studio-Line program to see which of these programs works best with my
printer/scanner (and provides the best picture).

Thank you both for the prompt, very helpful suggestions.

As has been mentioned, download Irfanview (totally free) and open the
image in it. On the toolbar select Image > negative and save the new
image. Done. Easy. Free.

Re: [LegacyUG] Default Browser Selection

2009-08-11 Thread Pat

Evening Ron,

Well, Legacy says that I can use any browser I want to use; as long as I let
the Legacy program know where it is located on my disk. I let Legacy know
(see the details below) and the program verified that I had given it the
correct hard disk address. Legacy did in fact start Google Chrome (as it
should).

In answer to your question you might want to follow these example/steps
and you will see what I mean.

I) Choose "Legacy Home" tab
2) Choose "Bring your Legacy family file with you on a USB drive, cell
phone, or PalmOS device"
3) About half way down on the page a URL appears for "Learn more about
MojoPac by CLICKING HERE".

4) Click on "by clicking here".

Problem: On my machine it brings up Internet Explorer (which is not my
default browser) in a separate window; instead of using my default Google
Chrome browser.

Comment: I thought the purpose of this particular "Legacy Customize Screen"
was to allow you to use the browser of your choice, and/or the Alternate
Word Processor of your choice, and/or the Alternate Text Editor of your
choice, and/or the Alternate Adobe Acrobat Reader of your choice.

Wonder why I keep getting Internet Explorer screens; when Legacy has
provided us with a dedicated screen letting us choose support equipment
other than the defaults chosen by Legacy?

Pat,

Guess I am missing something here, but how do you know? You are probably
correct as Legacy is based on MS Access and it makes sense to use their
products for its internal use - hence the use of Bing for mapping.

Since the News appears within Legacy I cannot tell which browser it's using.

[LegacyUG] Help with deleting without deleting :)

2009-11-10 Thread Pat
Hi, I'm new to this list. I merged records several months ago. I now find
that I am listed 3 times as well as my husband. I deleted one of the
listings of my husbandand now he is gone out of my pedigree! Help how
do I get him back!! I added him again by typing in his info, but now how do
I link him to his parents and the rest of his ancestors?

When I print out a family group sheet, either he or I were showing up 3
times. I just wanted to get rid of 2 of the listings. How do I delete 2 of
my listings without losing me like I did my husband? :(

Thanks in advance for any help.

[LegacyUG] Making a backup of my family file

Fairly recently, my computer crashed and I lost my family file and do not want that to happen again.  Can you tell me, step-by-step how to put a copy of the file on a CD.  I really need specifics because I have not done this before.  I did get one response, but it was not specific enough to help me.  I regularly back my file up on the C drive.  The file is called familyfile.fdb, and I notice that when I back it up and creates a zip file.  Does that make sense?

You can add more than one file to a CD-R.  You can't overwrite or remove the
file that you burn to the CD-R.  To reuse the CD-R with the same file,
you'll need to rename the file slightly - a lot of users will add the date
to the end of the file name.

We don't recommend use of CD-RW - those disks don't seem to be as reliable
as CD-R and may not be readable on a drive other than the one it was written
on.

DVDs also can be unreliable. A user sent me his Family File on a DVD and I
was unable to read it with my DVD player.  Besides, the disks are a lot more
expensive.

Windows XP does have CD-writing capabilities, although not as good as
commercial software. After you insert a blank CD-R, you might even get a
pop-up asking what you want to do!  If you don't right click on the file in
Windows Explorer, select "Send To" and select the CD writer drive.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Have you tried making a CD lately?  It's not my forte, but here is what I've
learned about it:

1. inexpensive CDs only allow you to write to them once--much like
using a piece of paper--if you edit the file at all, then it must be burned
to another CD
2. don't confuse CDs with DVDs, which can also be burned; if you put a
DVD into a CD burner, your file won't copy  (I don't know if #1 also applies
to DVDs)

3. good news: it seems that computers purchased in the last couple of
years only require drag & drop (remember floppies?); as long as you buy
formatted CDs, they are created by (disclaimer: this is for PCs):

  1. right click on start
  2. select search or explore to locate your file
  3. copy the file
  4. select the appropriate drive for burning CDs
  5. paste
  6. use  (seriously--make sure it's there; I "made" CDs for a
presentation once, only to learn in front of the class that one of my
teenagers had been burning CDs--not labeling them-- and storing them in the
container with new CDs !)

Hope this helps.

[LegacyUG] Events

When entring events for an individual, I like to simply enter the event name, and then write a short narrative relative to that person.  I do not want to enter place, date, & description -- I want to include that in the narrative.  Is there a way to do this?  I have 4.0 Deluxe.  I tried and thought it was working, but it cut me off while typing the narrative.

Hi Peggy,

Are you adding your narrative in the Event Note?
Current capacity for event note in Legacy 6 is a million characters.
I think it was similar in Legacy 4. That's a lot of words.

If you are writing your narrative in the Description field you'll
soon meet a limit.

[LegacyUG] Reports, Charts, etc.

2006-07-26 Thread Pat

Can anyone tell me which report, chart, etc. will provide the all-inclusive data that has been entered about individuals.  It seems like whatever type report or chart I try to produce, something is always missing.

As far as events, does it make more sense just to write a narrative under General Notes that would include everything?  I am finding it difficult to enter events in a consistent manner (wording, etc) and also to get them to print out.

Suggestions?

[LegacyUG] My apology to LUG and thank you to Cathy

My sincerest apologies to the LUG for the emoticons in my IncrediMail

often (and when I do, the emoticons do not show up on mine), I was NOT aware
that everyone else was getting them. After I was informed by a couple of

rid of them.

A special thank you to Cathy who e-mailed me with info on how I could get
rid of them. Some of us newer folks are just not as computer savvy as

offer solutions, and try to be helpful.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7 - Split up to different family groups and Save

2008-09-05 Thread Pat Hickin

Sheelagh,
I did this and basically have been happy with the result -- I have VERY
few connections between the two groups. I think all the objections
people have made are valid. I'm continuing to keep mine split for the
time being, but an added objection to dividng the two groups is in the
Master sources and perhaps the Locations list. Sometimes it means you
have to enter the same source 2x , 1 for each database -- at least I
haven't found a way to copy them. I would certainly never split into
more than 2 databases.

I could never split my mother's maternal and paternal line as there are
WAY too many intermarriages -- it would be hell.

[LegacyUG] Need overall help

2009-01-30 Thread Pat Borcherding
I'm not new to genealogy, but I feel like I am so snowed under with legacy
7. I had been using FTM since it came out, but was not happy with their new
format, so wanted a change. I have been reading the book, reading the emails
and now I'm just going to ask for help from you all, I really want to start,
but find I am having difficulty finding, or perhaps adjusting.

The Master Location listing, I understand the logic behind it, (I'm working
my English side) you have the mapping system, why just put the village and
country, it could be a large village and if you wanted to visit or see what
was actually around that area, just having the name of the village makes it
harder? I have started putting the whole address down, so that I can see
where the location really is, has anyone else done this? Comments please.

Picture gallery, I can't move a pictures from one field to another in the
picture gallery?

I would really love to have a Legacy buddy to help me with these problems I
am having. Thanks for listening.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Using Dropbox to sync Legacy

  Hi Everyone

I apologize in advance for the length of this post but I wanted to
share with everyone how I am keeping my Legacy files synced and
current between my two computers as I think this is a concern to many
of us that use more than one computer. I routinely work on both my
computers in Legacy, adding and changing the data. I try to keep it
all sorted in my little brain as to which one was the most up-to-date
copy, but it isn't always easy to do that and sometimes I'm just not
100% sure which one I used last. I fear I was overwriting newly
created data on occasion. Enter Dropbox. I have been using this for a
while now to keep various files in sync between my two computers and
it works beautifully. I had even been backing up my Legacy files to
Dropbox so that each computer had access to backups in the same
(synced) location, but now I'm actually storing my Legacy Data files
in Dropbox and it works great!

  To explain .

First, to learn more about Dropbox, go to http://www.getdropbox.com/.
Basically, it is a FREE little program that you download and install
on each of your computers that you'd like to keep in sync. On each
computer, it creates a Dropbox folder. Whatever you put into that
folder, gets synced to your Dropbox account on the Internet and then
to your other computer(s) with the same setup. It happens very
quickly, usually within seconds, depending on the size of the file.
The beauty of this, is that it only depends on the Internet to do the
syncing, so your data sits in the Dropbox folder on your computer,
always available to you. You don't have to access it on the Internet.
AND, that same data now sits on the Dropbox server as an off-site
backup to you AND available to you from any computer, anywhere through
the web interface! It can't get any better than this!

This was recently written about by Dick Eastman in a recent Plus
version of his newsletter and he sings its praises highly. I had used
it before but his newsletter gave me the idea to use it to store and
sync my Legacy data files. I'm so glad I did. Dropbox only syncs
changes when you close a file. So, in Legacy, when I am through
working in my file, I close it (you don't have to quit the program)
and it immediately syncs to my Dropbox folder, then to the Internet,
then to the Dropbox folder on my other computer. No more wondering if
I am using the most current version of my data!

This is free and works on both Macs and Windows. You are allowed 2GB
of storage space and you can pay for more if you need it. Oh, and by
the way, it works beautifully if you are a Mac user like I am, using
Legacy from within Parallels or one of the other virtualization
programs. Legacy knows to look for my data in the Dropbox folder and
all my images and documents I link to from my Mac folders.

I hope this may provide a solution to some of you. If you've been
thinking or wondering about Dropbox, give it a try. You won't be sorry!

  Kathy

Re: [LegacyUG] Tables within Notes (was preventing incorrect spaces within words in Notes)

2009-02-04 Thread Pat Jones
Mary,

You see the same flaw I see with Gene's method and no, unfortunately the table
fix was not included in version 7; however, I am told that it's been proposed,
at least, to the programmers. Maybe in version 8, or 9, or sometime. I would
have thought the lack of formatting for tables would have been a big howl by
the Legacy users, not just you and me.

Gene, IMHO This is not a Table, it's a series of words with the pipe
  symbol as separator.
And yes of course it displays correctly - you have used the same word
in each column, giving the _same width_
  Does it work with this?
  one | six | eleven| fifteen
  two | seven | twelve| sixteen
  three | eight | thirteen| seventeen
  four | nine| fourteen| eighteen
  five | ten| fourteen| nineteen

If v7 uses _tabs_ within notes to create a Table, I might be tempted
  to upgrade to v7 DeLuxe!!

[LegacyUG] Dropbox questions

2009-02-12 Thread Pat Jones
I've really fallen in love with this program but have only used
it to automatically transfer my Legacy data from one computer to
another (both mine and both running the same version of Legacy
updates and I'm located in California).

Questions:
What happens if Legacy has another update and I install it on my
main computer but NOT on the other one? Will that confuse the
"Dropbox" program?

My cousin in Florida does NOT have Legacy on her computer, nor
does she have any other genealogy program. I want to send her
the family tree so that she can add informtion about her part of
the family. Does she have to have the paid version of Legacy on
her computer or will the transfer work on the free version? Then
she will send it to "Dropbox" and I get it on my computer

My other cousin lives far away from me as well and uses FTM. I
want to send him the family tree so that he can add his part.
How does he go about doing this? Would he download the free
Legacy, make a GEDCOM with his FTM, move it over to the Legacy
and then use "Dropbox" to send it back to me?

Thanks all

[LegacyUG] saving file, etc

2008-04-14 Thread Pat Jones
I just ran into a problem and can't come up with an answer.

I need to make a presentation by giving a demonstration using Legacy and
thought the easiest way to make it clear to the viewers would be to make a
step-by-step view of the index file as the changes were made to it. I first
made a copy of the file and saved it under a different name, say file 1. On
file 1, I then made the changes I wanted to show, closed that file down and
backed it up. Now I should have the original file and file 1, the original
without the changes and file 1 with the changes. I wanted to make sure that I
had both files the way I wanted them before I made the next change but when I
went back to the original file the changes I had made to the file called file 1
were on the original file as well.

Surely, there is the capability within Legacy to do this but I can't find a
way. Any help out there?

incorporating into my website, as I have to remove from his data the records
which are common to mine.

This is how I do it:

I open his file called "G" into Legacy and immediately "Save As" "Gmonth".
You should now see that your active file is called "Gmonth" and no longer "G".
I then do all the work on this file as normal and back-up when finished.

Re: [LegacyUG] saving file, etc

2008-04-14 Thread Pat Jones

Cathy, Sherry, Ron and Jenny:

I first copied the original file using the save as, then made the changes to
the new file. When I went back to see the original file, it too had changed
to match the new file (easy to tell the change as the original file had
several more columns in the index view than the new file did; after deleting
those columns in the new file and then going back to look at the original
file, those columns were missing in the original file as well.)

I asked Sherry for help and am eagerly awaiting what she can come up with.

BTW, I'm using the latest updated version 6.

It sounds like you renamed the original file instead of copying it.
If you did it within Legacy, you must use Save As, to create a copy.
Then make sure you are working in your new file.

Is it possible that the changes are only in the original file?

You can't write to two files at once.

Or did you think a Legacy file was like a Word document and that you
could make the changes and then save as a different file leaving the
original untouched? The order is crucial. Everything you change in
Legacy is saved to the file on the fly.

the file called file 1 were on the original file as well.

Surely, there is the capability within Legacy to do this but I can't
find a way. Any help out there?

Re: [LegacyUG] saving file, etc

2008-04-15 Thread Pat Jones
Bill,

You were right on. I received a message from our Sherry "Support" stating
virtually the same thing. So the problem wasn't in how I was trying to save a
"family file" but was in not saving the various setups of the customized
columns. Hadn't thought of that just taking it for granted that once a file
was saved, everything about that file had been saved. Something new learned!

Thanks to all for your suggestions. And yes, there would have been several
different ways to set up the demo but this one really shows some of the more
unknown capabilities of Legacy.

Pat of the "AHA" moment!

As I understand your post You want to change which colums are
displayed in the index view and have several views with different
colums showing. If this is the case then here's how...

  1. In index view right mouse click on the column heading above the names.

  2. Click on customize. In the pop-up, select the colums you want
displayed and then on the right side of the pop-up click save. In the
next pop-up give it a file name and save it.

3.Modify the colums again then save to a different name.

4.Do this for as many views as you need. Then the next time you right
click on the header above the names in the list it will let you select
  one of the saved views.

[LegacyUG] Curious why: difference between "contains" and "equal to"

2008-04-16 Thread Pat Jones
I set up my search equation to find all parties in the database
that (1) do not have a birth date OR (2) do not have a death date
and in the "How to look" I first chose "contains" and in the
"What to look for" I left blank, but that didn't accomplish what
I wanted. I went back to the search equation and chose "Equal
to" leaving everything else the same and that worked. Now I'm
curious why; it would seem that, at least in this case, both mean
the same.

[LegacyUG] V6 -- Error 3021

2008-05-22 Thread Pat Hickin

When I attempt to enter, e.g., a new parent, I get an Error 3021 message:
Error getting next deleted MRIN
Error 3021: No current record.

Would you like to TRY IT AGAIN?

If I click "Yes" I keep getting the same message.
If I click Yes, No, Yes, No, the Error message disappears and I am able
to enter the name and any other information.

Actually I want to download Legacy 7. Is it OK just to ignore the above
error messages and trust Leg 7 to straighten things out OR should I
somehow get rid of this recurring Error message first?

Thanks

[LegacyUG] Help with Install password for Legacy 7.0 Free version

2008-06-03 Thread Pat Walker
Very frustrating--I am a paid customer. I wanted to upgrade to the 7.0
Deluxe from my 6.0 Deluxe. First I downloaded the free 7.0 version and
then purchased the upgrade. In the meantime, I was told I would be
emailed the install password (used to be family for 6.0) so I could at
least play around with the 7.0 standard.

Alas, I got no such email and the recorded message on the Tech line
(long since closed) had the OLD password.

Does anyone know the new one for 7.0? I was hoping Legacy would keep up
with their tech recorded messages--don't release 7.0 until you have that
in place. Very frustrating to any customer, free or paying.

thanks

[LegacyUG] Legacy 7 Research Guidance repositories--where is Footnote.com

2008-06-04 Thread Pat Walker
I thought this new version would update the repositories it uses for

There are many other new databases that don't show up in Legacy 7.

I would have gladly waited for the release if more new features could
have been added, or made widely usable--such as the Mapping

[LegacyUG] new FamilySearch integration?

2008-06-04 Thread Pat Walker
I thought maybe this new 7.0 would incorporate some type of integration
with the LDS new FamilySearch database That does not seem to be the
case--they still have only the old TempleReady feature.

I guess the only new features I see (unless I have the wrong version
downloaded) are (from the menu):

Map My Family (I CANNOT USE THIS ANYWAY BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE AND DON'T
WANT TO HAVE IE 7 ON MY COMPUTER) VERY, VERY DISAPPOINTED.

Legacy Charting (I already had access to this via the free download--all
I get now is a link to it from within Legacy)

Source Writer (not in the Menu)

So did I pay for an upgrade to Deluxe just for the Source Writer

I am new to this group, but I am sure someone will set me straight!

I guess a lot of rumors I had heard are not true.

Re: [LegacyUG] New V. 7

2008-06-05 Thread Pat Walker
There should be a discounted upgrade price for those that don't have or
cannot have IE7--as we cannot use the "deluxe" map feature. I have a
job with several communication tools that require that I NOT have IE7,
so I don't have a choice of whether to have it or not.

Cathy wrote:

Have you entered your Deluxe Customer Number?

You won't get mapping until you do.

You can get to the maps through the icon on the toolbar - if it isn't
there - customise the toolbar by right clicking on an empty spot and
then following the directions.

This takes you to the map for the highlighted individual.

Or go to the Master Location List and check the Show Maps checkbox.

Remember you need to have IE7.

[LegacyUG] v 6 AND 7 Child-parent relationship not found

2008-06-06 Thread Pat Hickin
With both Legacy 6 and 7 when I am adding a new event and am ready to
add the source, I click on the book icon and get the message
"Child-Parent relationship not found." I click on the OK button -- I
have to do this several times or it keeps reappearing -- then finally
it disappears and Legacy automatically closes. The info I have entered
has been saved however. This does not always happen, but it has
happened with both 6 and 7, which I think is strange.

It may be that I sometimes double-click without thinking, but that does
not necessarily solve the problem. Today in Leg 6 on a trial entry I
double-clicked the book icon intentionally and nothing happened, then I
immediately single-clicked and got Run-time error 405 "Unable to show
modal form within this context." Clicking OK immediately closed Legacy.

I think it's weird that I got the same "Parent-Child" error with Leg 6
AND 7!

Any ideas?

Pat

2008-06-06 Thread Pat Walker
IE 7 was never part of my OS (XP Media Manager) and cannot use it as
other programs I use for a daily at home job require IE 6 ONLY, so IE 7
is not an option. I just bought a new computer a year ago, so don't
plan on anything new in the near future and definitely not a memory hog
OS like Vista.

I use other genealogy software programs and none "require" a certain
browser, such as IE 7--I will just have to use them for any mapping I do.

Mark K wrote:
Better yet they should write a whole separate program for you with

programs to actually have the browser that comes built into the

I hope you also got your discount from microsoft since they supply IE7.

This programs cost under $30 and I simply cant believe the people
whingeing about it took a few hours to get a password (on the free
version no less). Before they there were people that had been so
loyal as they had the program since v5 or earlier and they should get
a free upgrade.

Honestly some of you people are incredible.
If I was you I would consider being a true american and sue them for
selling you a product under false pretences or something - don't let
them get away with it.

Of course you may also consider suing the people who make the
communication tools that don't work with windows and IE7 but tht would
seem a bit unfair, I mean one person makes software that works with
the operating system and one makes software that doesn't and guess who
you complain to. And yes, IE is as close to being a part of the
operating system as anything can be.

There should be a discounted upgrade price for those that don't
have or cannot have IE7--as we cannot use the "deluxe" map
feature. I have a job with several communication tools that
require that I NOT have IE7, so I don't have a choice of whether
to have it or not.

Have you entered your Deluxe Customer Number?

You won't get mapping until you do.

You can get to the maps through the icon on the toolbar - if
it isn't there - customise the toolbar by right clicking on an
empty spot and then following the directions.
This takes you to the map for the highlighted individual.

Or go to the Master Location List and check the Show Maps
checkbox.

Remember you need to have IE7.

Re: [LegacyUG] v 6 AND 7 Child-parent relationship not found

2008-06-07 Thread Pat Hickin
Sorry, let me try again. However, I didn't send an attachment so I
don't understand that.

Anyway, here's the problem:

AND 7!

Any ideas?

[LegacyUG] V 7.0.0.53 - Problem linking parents to child

2008-07-07 Thread Pat Hickin

Dear LUGGERS,

I have had a recurring problem --or several inter-related
problems--linking parents to a child with both versions 6 & 7 and I
surely hope somebody can straighten me out!

This time, I had somehow entered John Doe as a grandson instead of a son.

So I unlinked him from Jacob Doe (who was really his brother) and linked
him to his father, John William Doe (who had only one wife).
As Legacy has ALWAYS done in my experience, it decided John Doe’s mother
was a 2nd, Unknown, wife, and gave John William Doe this new Unknown
wife with John Doe as their only child.

So I deleted Unknown Wife from John William Doe (JWD) and got a screen
(as I always have) telling me that their child John Doe would remain
linked to the individual at the top of the screen, namely John William Doe.

Fine, that's what I wanted.

However, that’s not what happened.

Once I deleted Unknown wife I had JWD and Mary White (Doe) and 10
children, with John nowhere to be found. This, too, has always happened.
So why is John NOT showing up?

(Also, having deleted his Unknown mother but not unlinked him from his
father, (according to the Legcy pop-up box) I looked up John Doe in the
name list --- BUT
when I brought him up --in the Family View screen -- he had No father or
any other relations!!)

Since I couldn’t link in his parents easily, I decided to do it the
other way round and go to their Family View and link him in as a son.

BUT I was unable to see a way to add him to JWD and Mary White as a son
as he was child #11 and there were just two columns of 5 children each
and no blank to click in. I could have probably clicked in the lower
right corner, but I didn’t think about it. (I had it set up, I THOUGHT
to Best Fit as I’d sometimes been seeing one column of children,
sometimes 2, and sometimes 3 depending on the number of children.)
Finally it occurred to me to click on JWD's screen and give an Edit
Children command which I did. That listed his 10 brothers and sisters
and I clicked on the option to Add a brother, and linked him in at that
point. So now -- at long last -- he is child #11 (he was the last born).

QUESTION: Is there some way to set Legacy so that
1) when I need to link in a parent, it will ASK me, e.g., whether I want
to link in the father's existing wife as the mother OR add a new
wife/mother ?

OR
2) if there is already more than one wife so that it will ask me WHICH
wife is the mother OR whether I want to create a new one?

At some point, I went to Help > Add Parents.

==
HELP tells me>

“1. Make sure the individual is in either the Husband or Wife position
of the Family View.

2. To add a father to the husband, right-click in the top half of the
husband's Parents box at the top of the Family View. To add a mother to
the husband, right-click in the bottom half of the husband's Parents box
at the top of the Family View. The Add Father or Add Mother window appears.

3. Click Add a NEW person to create a new record for a new individual or
Link to an EXISTING person if the father or mother is already in the
family file as an individual. If adding a new person, the Information
window appears, where you can enter the person's information. If linking
to an existing person, the Name List appears where you can select the
individual.

4. When you have finished adding or linking in the father or mother, the
name appears in the appropriate location of the Parents box. You can
then continue to add the other parent, if known.”

==

So, I re-tried the whole thing. After linking him to his father I
clicked on the Mother space, and linked him to JWD's only wife, Mary
White . Legacy thereupon AGAIN gave JWD a 2nd wife, this one a SECOND
Mary White! (with one child, John Doe!)

This is not the first time I have inadvertently created an additional
wife/mother when attempting to link in a parent. I must be doing
something wrong! But I don’t know what!

QUESTION: SO-O-O can someone please tell me how to link in existing
people as parents without creating new spouses for one parent!!??

I also had another problem with Help, which I’ll put in a separate email.

Thanks in advance for your advice, comments, etc.!

Pat

At present you are only linking to one parent - hence the confusion.

Dede,

That is a really useful suggestion. I have been mining birth,
marriage, death and census data, etc. from Ancestry.com for six
years. I discovered I could copy text from Ancestry.com and paste
directly into Legacy for individual fields and master sources, and
forgot all about the "Printer Friendly" printout. I have not yet
tried the new source templates in Legacy 7. Now, faced with the
daunting task of reworking sources, it is a comforting thought to
have a paper printout from Ancestry.com to refer to while trying to
find appropriate templates in Legacy 7.

Ronald,

This may or may not help, but Ancestry.com gives very good source
information along with the records. If you like, you can choose
"Printer Friendly" from the result window, then print the search
result you're going to use, along with the source information. Having
this in front of you while you work with the various templates may
give you a good idea of which template will produce the best result

found on the internet through www.ancestry.com? I am using the deluxe

Re: [LegacyUG] detail line in the Source

2008-07-16 Thread Pat Hickin

Eileen,
If you post/copy a source to the source clipboard, and go to the Source
Detail screen, you'll notice in the bottom left corner, a box that you
can check that says "Prompt for Detail." If you put a checkmark there,
you can always be sure the detail is just what you want it to be.

Will that enable you to do what you want?

Pat

Eileen wrote:

Hope someone will have the time to try to entry a Source and see if it is
doing the same thing I'm having trouble with.

Did a new Source, putting only the basis information in, and when the second
screen comes up, I put in dates, series numbers in the detail field.
Attached that one to where I need it and go to the next family where I start
another new Source screen this time I don't put anything in the detail spot,
just left everything clear, just save, go the person, tell it to add the
source, but I then opened the assigned Source screen(bluebook) and the
second Source now has a detail line with a date that is not the same date as
the first Source (but a date I had put in days ago) and should not have
anything in the detail field since I didn't put anything in it, so I go to
edit the source and save and it removes the detail line and it looks like
the second Source but correct now.

Well this is taking me much more time to add sources if I have to look each
and every time and tell it to Edit and Save each and every line that has a
wrong detail line.

Now I have checked the Source screen and the detail screen and the wrong
information does not show up on either one of them.

I have sent this to Sherry twice, but have not heard from her yet.

Hope I have explain this well enough for someone else smarter then I, to
give it a try and see what happens.

Thanks for the help,
Eileen

[LegacyUG] How to print list of date of birth, no locations, surname, given name

2008-07-16 Thread Pat Hickin

I'm using Legacy Beta 7.0.0.55.

I've tagged everyone who has the surname DOE.

Now I want to print a two-column list of these DOEs --
with date of birth in column 1; DOE, given name in col 2.

Somehow I can't find the choices that enable me to do that.

What I get is column 1 taking up the whole width of the page (though
I've got the column for 2 inches).

And place of birth shows along with the date. I can't find the option
for dob, just for born -- or birth, I forget which.

Also is there any way to get the dates (like locations) to print in
reverse order? (so that I get something like 1708 11 23 for someone
born 11/23/1708)??

Thanks for your help!

Thanks, Dennis, there's an option for Birth Date in Customize Display,
but not in the Print options.
I tried the CSV, but I also can't see a way to get the birth info in
front of the name.
Have you tried doing this in Leg 6 (I no longer have that version on my
computer)?

Thanks so much for your help.

I don't have v7, but it is probably similar to v6...

I assume you are looking at the search results window and you have
clicked the Print button.

If you are getting birth place along with the date, check your
selection. There should be one for just Birth Date.

Once you have that figured out, I would recommend changing the Report
Destination to CSV file. Then you can import that file into a
spreadsheet program and manipulate things there.

[LegacyUG] Search and replace for burial address

replace for the Tag 4s and put "Mountain Cemetery" in the 'Burial

[LegacyUG] I have a female relative who never married but adopted a child problem

2008-07-23 Thread Pat Jones
Hi all,

I'm am stumped! I have a female relative who never married but
adopted a child. By going into tne "Marriage Events" for my aunt
and changing the wording under the "Wording Options" from
"married someone" that was in the box for whatever reason (I
didn't put it there) to "She never married; child was thought to
be adopted." I managed to change the sentence on a report to
something more correct. HOWEVER, there is a lingering "d. 1911"
that must have been part of the original thought that Legacy
picked up somewhere. I'd like to eliminate it and have searched
all the notes and everywhere else for it w/o success. Can
someone help?

Also, in the Family screen for her, it shows the icon for a
husband lighted. When I click on it, the "Husbands of
.." screen comes up and shows "Unknown" for her husband.
Has anyone figured out a way to make that go away? I can't
unlink or delete it w/o losing the adopted child.

If there is no way to do this, Sherry (Support), how about a
"fix"; perhaps a default to a marriage/relationship but a way to
click that off on that screen only if there was no
marriage/relationship.

Thanks

[LegacyUG] Addendum to my relative who never married but adopted a child problem

2008-07-23 Thread Pat Jones
Sherry and all,

I think the part of my problem about the lingering "d. 1911" may
be some sort of "bug". I've been playing around with trying
different things after noticing that the sister preceding my
relative had married someone who died in 1911 and show that in
the descendant report printout of all the family. So I removed
the death date for that party and then tried the descendant
report again - and the "d. 1911" that was the wording I wanted to
get rid off disappeared for my relative. Of course, it is also
missing as the death date for the husband of my relatives next
oldest sibling as well.

When I put the death date back in for that husband it reappears
as the lingering "d. 1911" in my relatives report.

You know of course that you can edit an existign event, copy it to the

The recent discussion about ALT MARRIAGE event (which needs to be
created) brought this to mind:

When adding a new event, one thing I've just begun to try (in
otherwords, I have not generated any reports so not sure of the impact):
I start the event name with a period. That way I can see if this is a
"precanned" event that came with Legacy, or an event that I added (and
thus that might need to be revisited and tweaked).

I would think it might be wise to do this with a "modified Legacy
event" also? Make a new one instead of modifying an existing one, the
new one with an altered name and leave the "precanned" on in place?

Actually, as I think about it, it might be easier the other way
around. Modify all the Legacy pre-canned ones to start with some
character. That way those "surely this is set up right" events would
be easy to spot. Thus whenever I do a GEDCOM import it would be
obvious which ones came in via the import and thus might need
visiting/tweaking. (With my current method of adding a "." to MY
events and leaving Legacy as is, the newly imported events would
become intermixed with Legacy's pre-canned ones 'cause neither would
have that leading special character. So it would not be obvious which
ones might need closer inspection.)

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I wish Legacy had a COPY EVENT, but I'm not seeing that as an option.
I only see ADD, DELETE, MERGE.

Re: [LegacyUG] Addendum to my relative who never married but adopted a child problem

2008-07-25 Thread Pat Jones
Brian,

I'm running Version 7 fully updated on an XP machine, also fully updated.

I went to the "Include Main Entries For" and ticked the Standard Format as you
requested. I also have "Show line back to starting person" and "Show spouses
for children who will have a main entry" ticked. Then I ran the Preview of the
report with the error and the error is still there. The first person (Sarah
McKaig) is married and her husband died in 1911; that is correct. The
following person (Margaret McKaig) was not married but she adopted a child. It
is the entry for Margaret on the report tht shows the incorrect d. 1911. Could
it have something to do with me going to the Marriage Information, then Wording
Options screen for Margaret and doing an override for the wifes' first
marriage, "She never married. Howard Duff was adopted." Of course the icon
for the spouses on the basic information page lights up and if clicked on the
Husbands of Margaret McKaig it shows unknown.

Can you suggest a more correct way to do all of this if it will clear up all
the problem and still show the adopted child? Or does some change need to be
made to the program to accomodate relationships like this?

  Pat,

There is a problem report recorded in our tracking system about carry
over of dates from people with them to following people without dates.

What settings are you using for the Include main entries section on the
descendant report screen? If you select the "standard" of including main
entries only for individuals with children the report will work
correctly. It is the other options for main entries that can cause this
  problem with carried over dates.

[LegacyUG] GPS lat and long format

it. e.g. 681234.293.)"

I don't know how to translate it to get minutes and seconds to numbers < 60.

This is the first time I've attempted to enter Lat and Long.

Can anyone give me some pointers?

I am adding my source as I go along, I'm adding people all from the

template. As my pages change I simply update the detail with the new

previously there and copy to the individuals and marraiges on that
page as I add them.

In the marriage screen there are two options for pasting source
clipboard. 1) Add clipboard source to marraige event 2) Add clipboard
source to all used fields.

When using option 2, it "reds" out all fields in the marraige event,
not just the one(s) I have filled in.

For instance, for my current marraige I only have a date, so I enter
that. However the source clipboard "add clipboard source to all used
fields" "reds" (meaning it's sourced) these fields: marraige date, in,
status, status date.

Re: [LegacyUG] Marriage and other vital stats sourcing and possible confusion

2008-08-02 Thread Pat Hickin
I agree with Janis, who wrote, "Separating date and place, for purposes
of sourcing, would be enough for me." .

One reason I'd like date and place separated is because so OFTEN I have
two different sources for date and place for ALL vital statistics -- not
just marriages.

Then there's the problem with "Swapping" birth, death, marriage and
ALTERNATE birth, death, marriage info.

Let's say you have a dob of "ca 1850" and a pob of town, county,
state,USA from Source A.

Then you find a tombstone (Source B) with a dob of 10 Nov 1849 and no pob.

If you enter the Source B dob in the Event field and click Options>
Swap birth info, you now have a blank in the pob space.
So then you have to add the pob manually, be sure you've got both
sources cited in the birth source field; add notes in the detail of each
source saying (for Source B "for dob only" and, for Source A "for pob
only" -- except you may prefer to write out, rather than just use
initials for pob and dob. )

If this kind of thing occurred only occasionally it wouldn't be a big
issue, but when 75% of you entries are like this it's another matter!

FURTHERMORE -- AND the following can be a SERIOUS problem that I have
brought directly to Legacy's attention.

Let's say that the existing birth info has
BORN: ca 1850, Fairfield, Essex, NY,USA
(and your source is Source A-family history)

Then you find a tombstone and enter the alternate birth info as an Event
as follows:

EVENT: Alt. birth
DESCRIPTION: Date on tombstone is difficult to make out.
LOCATION: [LEFT BLANK]
DATE: 12 Nov 1849
(and your source is Source B-tombstone)

THEN you do a SWAP (Options> Swap with birth information)

and you now have
BORN: 10 Nov 1849 [no location info]
(and your source is Source B-tombstone)

And in your events list you now have
EVENT: Alt. birth
DESCRIPTION: Date on tombstone is difficult to make out.
LOCATION: Fairfield, Essex, NY,USA
DATE: ca 1850
(and your source is shown as Source A-family history -- whereas you

Well of course you have to go in manually and get all that straightened
out. Legacy does not even WARN you that it is not really doing a swap
of ALL ,e.g., birth information or is garbling the source info.

I was not aware this was happening for YEARS and I've no idea how much
misinformation in re sources I have as a result.

I complained to Legacy once months ago about this but I see Legacy
(Beta 7.0.0.55) has not corrected it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Marriage and other vital stats sourcing and possible confusion

2008-08-02 Thread Pat Hickin
I was just making all that up as an example. Doing a Swap DOES put the
ca 1850 into the alt birth field, but it also takes out the pob info,
which was precise.

Remember the ca 1850 was entered first, before the exact dob was found.

Thanks for your comments, though.

And of course sometimes you want to have more than one DOB listed
because you're not sure which -- if either -- is right.

Elizabeth Richardson wrote:
Is there some reason you dont' put the "Abt 1850" in the Alt Birth
event and source it? Then add the more precise information adding the
additional source. I don't know why you are trying to swap the
information since you have to make a new event anyway. Seems like
putting the Abt information in the Alt event would be easier. By the
way, if I were to come across this Abt information after I had found
the precise information, I would probably just skip entering it,
unless it is more than a year different.

I agree with Janis, who wrote, "Separating date and place, for
purposes of sourcing, would be enough for me." .

One reason I'd like date and place separated is because so OFTEN I
have two different sources for date and place for ALL vital
statistics -- not just marriages.

Then there's the problem with "Swapping" birth, death, marriage and
ALTERNATE birth, death, marriage info.
Let's say you have a dob of "ca 1850" and a pob of town, county,
state,USA from Source A.
Then you find a tombstone (Source B) with a dob of 10 Nov 1849 and no
pob.

If you enter the Source B dob in the Event field and click Options>
Swap birth info, you now have a blank in the pob space. So then you
have to add the pob manually, be sure you've got both sources cited
in the birth source field; add notes in the detail of each source
saying (for Source B "for dob only" and, for Source A "for pob only"
-- except you may prefer to write out, rather than just use initials
for pob and dob.

Then you find a tombstone and enter the alternate birth info as an
Event as follows:

EVENT: Alt. birth
DESCRIPTION: Date on tombstone is difficult to make out.
LOCATION: [LEFT BLANK]
DATE: 12 Nov 1849
(and your source is Source B-tombstone)

THEN you do a SWAP (Options> Swap with birth information)

and you now have
BORN: 10 Nov 1849 [no location info]
(and your source is Source B-tombstone)

And in your events list you now have
EVENT: Alt. birth
DESCRIPTION: Date on tombstone is difficult to make out.
LOCATION: Fairfield, Essex, NY,USA
DATE: ca 1850
(and your source is shown as Source A-family history -- whereas you
actually have 2 different sources for this info as the source for
the Description field should be Source B).

Well of course you have to go in manually and get all that
straightened out. Legacy does not even WARN you that it is not

JL,
I know how to edit th Master Location list to get rid of cemetery
names. But before doing that, if I tag every one I want to have
buried in, say, "Evergreen Cemetery" can I get them all into "Evergreen
Cemetery" in the burial address field (the one you get to via the +

Does this make sense?

I reccommend fixing it first, then merging. That is
the easiest. You might want to undo it, having two
files, repair the 2nd one. Once the member's fields
match yours, then merge.

Re: [LegacyUG] Has anybody tried to use Legacy to build an Adam and Eve family tree?

2008-08-14 Thread Pat Hickin
I don't know that this would be any help but there is a Springer family
history that purports to do that. When I first saw the title, I assumed
it was a spoof, but the author was serious.

(There were Springers in Delaware by the 18th century; the author
contended that they were descended from Springers in Sweden who were
descended from a Thuringian nobleman called Louis the Springer and that
said Louis was descended from Charlemagne, who had proved his ancestry
back to Adam and Eve! Or had it done by people who could read and write!
(some monks I presume!)

As well as I recall the author proceeded to give the details. I feel
sure it's of virtually no historical value, but if you're interested in
taking a look -- - -

Well it just occurred to me to Google Charlemagne, genealogy, and Adam,
which gave me this Springer website:
http://www.thecolefamily.com/hobby/springer.htm
and the websites lists the entire Springer "genealogy," including all
the Biblical figures in the "genealogy" (Methusaleh among them) back to
Adam! Needless to say, there's a disclaimer as to accuracy!

I think it's safe enough to assume that all people of European ancestry
are descended from Charlemagne since we have about the following number
of ancestors at 3 1/2 generations per century (assuming no overlaps, an
obvious impossibility)

2;4;8;16 -- 1900AD(at 4 gens)
32;64;128 -- 1800AD(at 3 gens)
256;512;1024;2048 -- 1700AD (4)
4096;8192;16384 -- 1600AD (3)

512,000; 1,100,000; 2,200,000; -- 1400 AD(3)
4,400,000;8,800,000; 17,600,000;33,200,000 -- 1300 AD(4)
66million, 132m, 264m -1200 AD(3)
512m, 1billion, 2 billion, 4 billion --1100 AD(4)
8 billion, 16 billion, 32 billion -- 1000 AD (3)
64 billion, 128 b, 256b, 512b- 900 AD(4)
1024 billion, 2048 billion, 4096 billion (3) (or am I up to the
trillions?? by now -- i.e. 800 A.D.

82,000 B; 164,000 B; 238,000b; 480,000 B (4) 700AD
Well a million Billion is surely at least a Trillion!!
So by Charlemagne's time we'd have billions of ancestors whereas there
were probably not more than a 100-200 million people in all of Europe in
his day. So we're probably all descended from Charlemagne, who traced
his ancestry to Adam!

Re: [LegacyUG] Master source repository for census

2008-08-15 Thread Pat Hickin
I use either HeritageQuest or Ancestry almost entirely. Sometimes, for
one reason or another I occasionally use first one and then the other
for the same census (for one reason or another).

For example I have a Source List Name:
1850 Census-VA-Washington Co.-Dist 67-Anc
and another entry as
1850 Census-VA-Washington Co.-Dist 67-HerQu

I note the repository in the publication facts as well as well as on the
repository tab.
With Ancestry repository items I just copy the report info into the
Publication Facts field, e.g.:>

*Source Citation:* Year: /1850/; Census Place: /District 67, Washington,
Virginia/; Roll: /M432_980/; Page: /215/; Image: /430/.

*Source Information:*

Ancestry.com. /1850 United States Federal Census/ [database on-line].
Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 2005. Original data:
United States of America, Bureau of the Census. /Seventh Census of the
United States, 1850/. Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records
Administration, 1850. M432, 1,009 rolls.

For Heritage Quest items, I take the publication info from the page
where you click to download the image. The Heritage Quest info is less
extensive but includes everything I need to find it again in Heritage
Quest -- or from another repository.

Pat

But in both cases I can usually copy it, which is less time-consuming
and more accurate than typing in the info.

Here's what I've run into. I create a Master source, for example, for

there is no repository tab to fill in where I got that particular

Any ideas on how to handle this? I'd really like to document the

So then, once the photo is in your family file, what do you do to see the
source of the photo?

I don't know why it doesn't work. I have done it. I
will explain what I have done exactly.
I have a photocopy of a census record. I originally
added to my ggrandfather, since he is on it. I also
added the same photo to each of the family members
there. I then called up the Edit Master Source
Definition, for the same census, clicked on the
picture field on the above screen. By finding the
photo in the directory tree, I added the same photo to
the source. But I don't do this much since I have some
census records where up to 150 family members are
consecutively on the same pages, so too many photos
for the same source. But this is how I do it.
If you are refering to the citation added to the
source, any such addition is added to EVERYONE using
the source. I add the citation to the Assigned sources
for the person with the variations of the same source
in the detail. For example, I have books that mention
2000 of my family members. The details sections gives
each persons' page numbers and some quotes as needed.
I hope this clears up the mud a little.

Pat,

To display a picture in the Family View click the
photo-frame icon and add
it to the Gallery for that person. When it's in the
Gallery and highlighted
click the asterix. You may only display one.

It is not possible to Display a picture attached to
a source in the Family
View unless you enter it twice - once in the Source
and once in the Gallery.

2007-09-25 Thread Pat Hickin
I suppose you could create an event called "Photo" or "Image," describe it
and add the photo to the detail. Perhaps then for the master source you
could just add "Image-" at the beginning of the Source List name for each of
the master sources that has one or more photos attached. (And also keep the
name minus the "Image-" prefix for other citations.)

Hi Pat,

Occasionally I'd like to be able to note the source of a picture as well.
Currently I mainly include my source in the picture filename. eg all the
photos I've scanned from my aunt's photo albums begin "eva###" where the
### is sequential numbers.

Legacy currently doesn't have the ability to source a picture. It simply
wasn't thought of by the programmers when they began. Legacy 6 included
sourcing for other bits of information that were being stored by the
program but weren't able to be sourced - like the "never married"

During the last few years sourcing has been seen as more and more
important. One of the reasons I swapped to Legacy years ago was the
superior sourcing ability. The first genealogy computer program I used
didn't have any provision for sources at all.

Being able to source pictures is on the requested enhancements list.

You could be very professional and use the IPTC embedded fields to record
the data. This of course doesn't show in Legacy but does travel with the
pic.

Re: [LegacyUG] Master Location List--use of brackets?

I'm talking about one next to the location field that could be seen without
checking source>source detils. I liked the idea of putting the # sign
immediately after the location to show that it's dubious.

To go off on a tangent--
Also, I think it's usually more important to know where one was living at
the time of death, than the actual location of the death (though I think
both, if different, are important). I had a cousin who lived in WV and died
in NC because he was in the Duke U hospital. W/o explanation someone would
think the family had moved to NC.

Re: [LegacyUG] Remove source by tag #

2007-09-25 Thread Pat Hickin
I mean that I entered a master source for 67 individuals, but it was the
wrong source for ca 40 of them. And I needed to put the right source in for
the forty.

I realized all I had to do was to tag was to tag the 67 individuals who had
the source (easy to do thru Show List).

Then I deleted the master source (and all references to it).
Then I tagged all the individuals who needed a different source (easy as
they were all descendants of the same guy) for advanced tagging/sourcing.

Then I cleared them of all tags. At that point I reentered the source for
the ones for whom the original source was legitimate -- and assigned the
source via Advanced Sourcing.

Don't know that my explanation is clear -- but it worked.

Hi Pat,

IMHO it is of equal importance to indicate both the place of residence and
the place of death if they differ. Death certificates are extremely
helpful in genealogical research, and in general a lot easier to acquire.
One must file for the death certificate in the state where the person
died.

have created and event entitled "Usual Place of Residence" which I always

June, It seems that a long time ago, it was found that a caption entered
from an **individuals** picture gallery would be used by the program for
THAT application only.. i.e. if you link a photo from an Individual's
Picture Gallery, the next screen to come up is the "Display Picture" input
area where you can enter the date & caption. That information will stick
for that particular linkage/use, but if you wish to link the same photo to
another event or another person, the caption and date will not be
included.
OTOH, if you use Tools > Picture Center, you will be presented with a
little different screen and you can enter your caption data and date
information here, and it will stick to any event or any other person that
you link the picture to.
I hope my poor ol' rememberer recalls this correctly..., but it's late and
I can't get up the gumption to test it myself.

Anne, tku for you reply and I am sorry I have been so long in getting
back to you. I didn't get any replies other than yours so everyone else
is seems is not having any trouble! I think I am doing the things you
mention but sometimes the captions stick and some times they don't. I am
beginning to think it is because I don't always click the 'attach' button
I can see that sometimes (when in the Picture Centre although you aren't
talking abt doing it from there I realise. I used to click the 'attached
pictures' tab and think that is enough.) I really don't quite know what I
do wrong. Anyway I will go on trying this, that and the other until I
know what I am doing wrong.

Sometimes I change the captions elsewhere and whether that is the problem
or not I still am not sure. Sometimes I have put in quite a screed in the
description box - and then the next time I look at the picture it isn't
there :--((

I have only just got back to concentrating on photos - and family history
come to that - as I have been in and out of hospital in the past year so
am not in my stride yet. Tks agn anyway.

June

June,
I am not sure if I saw a reply to your message.
What do you mean getting captions to stick?
When I want to add a photo to an individual, I click on the Picture
Galley

icon below their name,
Then I click on the picture icon on the side
After I have selected my picture to add, I then add the caption in the
caption box and any information that I want to in the description etc
and

then click close (top right hand corner) and legacy saves the link and
any information added.
I hope that this helps you.
Let me know if you are still having difficulties.

Anne

[LegacyUG] Adding event quickly by tagging

2007-09-26 Thread Pat Hickin

I know how to tag all the children of a family.

Now is it possible to add (easily) an event & source that I have on the
event clipboard via the tag?

Thanks. (I looked in Legacy Help, but as usual I can't understand their
explanations.)

Hi Jenny,

I should have added - a right click in the same place takes you backwards
through the list of siblings.

Do you know you can click to the side of a spouse to cycle through their
spouses? and to the side of parents to bring up another set of parents
when there is more than one set?

Clicking to the left of the children takes you down a tree through the
preferred children in each generation. That's why it's worth setting
direct lines for all persons of interest. Set your own last and where they
cross, the last set overrides the former. For example, if a name in an
email catches my eye but I'm not sure why it's familiar and I look it up
and wonder why that person is in my tree, I click down the generations
until I come up with someone more familiar. (Because some of my relatives
were very early European immigrants to South Australia, I have a lot of
people in my database not related to me. I'm interested in the community
surrounding my families in South Australia and tend to trace each marriage
partner back to immigration. So often I find I already had another member
of the family already entered in an earlier generation.)

That's the point, Pat. You need to start with that first child, and
now they come up to the main family view. You add the event to that
person, save that person, then do the click between that person and
the spouse. Open the next sibling that appears, enter the event (using
add and clipboard paste), close and save the person, click once again,
open the next sibling, etc. We are talking about seven clicks per
person. (Double click to open, click Add, click Paste, click Save,
click Save, click between.)

Re: [LegacyUG] Writing text

2007-09-30 Thread Pat Hickin
I put it in the first person; and then in the sources I would be sure to
clearly identify who "I" am/is -- or you could put in brackets or
parentheses as needed the actual/full names of the individuals involved --
and identify clearly any individuals who are not part of the family -- or
who are part of the family but have the same name as another family member.
Also be sure to include dates and make them as precise as possible as to
when the events/situations took place and when the information was
recorded/conveyed, etc.

June,
With Legacy, I use the person who said it as the Source, so that it
can be identified if someone wants to look back in the report. But in
the notes, I will write something like, "One of Annie's granddaughters
said that she was a lovely person who used to knit mittens for all the
grandchildren at Christmas." What this does is identify the speaker in
relationship to the person being spoken of, rather than in
relationship to me. Occasionally I identify the person by name also in
the notes, but I play it by ear depending on how I want it to read.

Re: [LegacyUG] unsubcribe

2007-09-30 Thread Pat Hickin
I had a problem unsubscribing from an [EMAIL PROTECTED] (and
adding a [EMAIL PROTECTED]). I eventually had to contact Legacy
support and even then it took several weeks to totally stop some of the
emails going to the old address. They would stop for a few days and then
suddenly I'd have a barrage of them (or just an odd one here and there)
going to the old address. After several weeks and direct email contact with
Legacy support (I would forward to them incorrectly received emails), it all
got straightened out. Good luck!

The usual reason for that is the person is using a different email address
from the one which was subscribed.

Why don't you just set up your message rules to delete emails with "same

We can discuss this without discussing the ethics and morality of it.

It's a real issue... I have a cousin who has a same-sex relationship and
he has legally adopted the other guy's child. The adoption is legal and
therefore the child is technically... well legally... part of the
family. While my family does not recognize the "relationship" we do
accept the child as family. I just entered the child as "adopted" in
the parent-child relationship and explained how the child came to be
adopted (and his "partner") in his notes without entering him in the
database. I then enter the child's biological parents (male and female)
as an unrelated couple.

As some governments are legalizing this in many parts of the world... we
need to have a way to account for it... whether or not we agree with
it. I don't think we should punish children involved in these
relationships.

Allen

Re: [LegacyUG] Suggestions wanted please: How to enter "boarder"

2007-10-06 Thread Pat Hickin

I would appreciate some suggestions on how to enter a "boarder" into
Legacy so that a future reader can understand clearly it is not a bona
fide family member.

I'm not sure this is relevant to your particular issue, but I have an event
entitled "Also living in household"
and then in description I put in the person's name, age, sex, race,
relationship (boarder, servant, cook, mother-in-law or whatever), and any
other info. Mostly this comes from the census so for date I put in the
census year and for location whatever I can get from the census. If the
person is a relative and hence in my database I go to his/her edit screen
and add the event "Living" and in Description "with son-in-law John Doe's
family" and give the date and location as above.

I would appreciate some suggestions on how to enter a "boarder" into
Legacy so that a future reader can understand clearly it is not a bona
fide family member. Any suggestions? Here is what I know:

I changed the names, some descendants are kind of "touchy" about this.

William Kasper was born 1847. Married Kathy Anderson in 1865, he was 18,
she was 17.
First child came less than a year later. Second child a little more than
a year later.
Sometime between 1900 and 1910, they allowed a boarder into their home.
He was 13. This boarder's name was David Williams. The 1910 census lists
him as age 16, and lists him as a boarder.
1920 Census shows "David" as David Kasper, boarder. He is 23. I feel
that David Kasper is David Williams.

Apparently they did not adopt at first. They must have at some point if
he changed his last name, though.

My question: How would I best enter a "boarder" into Legacy? Just show a
copy of the census?

Thanks.

Robert
