2008-03-07 Thread Judy Wardlaw

The way I have done this is to go to the Home page and adjust the size of
the chart so that I can see all the pages. My objective was to stop
splitting a box or marriage over a page break and by using the options on
the bar on the left it was reasonably easy to move the boxes around to avoid
this and optimise the pages.

I agree that to prevent boxes being split over page breaks is desirable.
My problem is with cutting and pasting pages. As the margin is very narrow,
the pasting area is very small. I cannot adjust this margin in Page Setup.
If we could set up (adjustable) slightly wider margins this would be
easier - or even better, an option to overlap the chart at page breaks as
can be selected with FTM charts (at least the old version 10)

Charting Companion Help says
Sometimes it is more efficient, taking fewer pages, to orient your
paper to landscape rather than portrait mode before printing. (To
make this change, go to the Home tab and choose Page Setup.)
Well I have fallen at the first hurdle - I have selected Home tab
but can't see Page Setup anywhere on screen!!

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Pre-Release Edition Now Available For Free Download

2008-03-07 Thread Jeremy Knowles
Saying it's not a Legacy problem is only part of the story. I suspect
what's happening is Legacy Charting is looking at all your disks for
files, and is being told by Windows that a particular drive is available
for searching, and when it tries this error is appearing*. If the
developers can reproduce it they will be able to fix it in a future
update, but in the meantime, I'd suggest looking at the following as an
example of how you may be able to locate the source of the problem and
stop it yourself
http://www.consumingexperience.com/2007/11/windows-no-disk-exception-pro
cessing.html taking particular notice of the bit that says leave drive C
alone!

If it does help or not, report back for others and Geoff to take it to
the developers.

Regards
Jeremy
*Windows is like that, and I'm a software developer too so I should
know- I've actually come across this myself in the past!

I assume that you mean when Legacy is running and probably has been for some
time. This does happen to me occasionally and I think Legacy must disappear
off screen. I use ctrl+alt+Delete and usually find in the Processes that Legacy

If you are having problems with your computer where a reboot may be
indicated but does not have the desired effect, it may be worth your
while powering down and leaving the machine for a while - go and make a
cup of tea or something, then come back.

I have had to do this with my computer in the past, and I've also had to

It's not the hard drive you are waiting for but for the power to drain
out of all the circuits. That takes at least 30 seconds if not longer.

There was a news article this week about the possibility of even
breaking encryption because of this fact that it takes time for power
to be lost and therefore for the RAM to be clear.

Hi Bob,

Did you try rebooting your computer? And if that didn't work, did
you shut it down and leave it off for five minutes or so before
starting it up again?

Sometimes things get a little confused, and this helps to reset the
memory and stuff.

It was only as long as 10 minutes if the computer had been super

a good idea as it's not just the computer that needs to reset but our

My intial thoughts:

1. I like the imitation of the latest Microsoft Office with the ribbon et
all.
2. Very good ease of use
3. I like the ability to expand/collapse the tree based on marriages
4. I like the ability to add a colour shade for females and males separately
5. I like the ability to have different border styles etc too
6. like the ability to drag individuals, entire lines or just generations
7. Like the ease of adding/reducing generations
8. Like the picture options , though cropping would be nice too.
9. Text options are good too, again being picky, spell checking would be
nice.
10 Navigation is good.

What's missing?

1. Inability to resize individual boxes
2. Not much else

This looks very promising and just what we've all been waiting for.
THANKYOU!

Keith

2008-03-06 Thread Martin Briscoe
It is very rare for me to print out a chart. I quite often send someone
information on one part of my tree that affects them. I do that as
Individual Report in PDF format. I then will include a couple of charts to
show some of this information in visual form. If there is a large blank
area in one part then I might as well show some extra information.

The children of a spouse by a previous spouse are of interest because they
are step children and so will appear in the censuses. Showing the other
spouse in the best way to display them.

Some people are only interested in tracing their ancestry back to Adam and
Eve. I like to see the whole picture and have often got very valuable
information from people connected to distant branches of my family as well
as being to help out others.

Hello Geoff,

Thank You for the download preview. I like these features.

- Easily email any chart to family members
- Export to .pdf, .bmp, .jpg, .png, .tiff, .psd
- Order a wall chart and have it delivered to your front door
- Includes a thorough help reference system for easy reference

The one feature I really like but was not on the list.

It appears you can copy/paste text on to the charts like a list of
sources.

i.e. like an Elizabeth Shown Mills example?

Or you can copy/paste the chart to a word processor program?

I have not explored this in detail as yet.

Question:

After Legacy 7 is released will it be an available option to add the
source documentation to the chart by selecting that option?

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Pre-Release Edition Now Available For Free Download

2008-03-06 Thread cnurc
Geoff,

Thanks for your reply, how I managed to completely zap the themes option I
don't know, but I love the defaults and see I'm going to have a lot of fun
setting up my own.

Regarding the tiling I think I didn't explain myself properly.
I only seem to have problems with the tall charts.
I'm using one of my photos as a background. Centre with no stretching,
centre and stretch and stretch to frame all work as expected.
When I switch to tile the photo is repeated twice vertically, but with half
of the photo disappearing off the frame horizontally.

I suspect this is normal behaviour, and perhaps for the tall charts there
needs to be resizing of the background so it will tile appropriately? It
would be nice if this was an auto function of the program (of course!)

Really, big congratulations to the whole dev. team, the more I play with it
the more I like it, from ease of first use to the level of customisation
possible with a simple execution. This really bodes well for the whole v7
package :)

Claire,

Regarding the tiling of background pictures - when you click on the
Background button (on the Appearance tab), try the Stretch to Frame option
in the Display options. This will stretch the image to the entire chart.

Using the Themes button on the Appearance tab you can create/save templates.

We'll try to enhance the zooming, I, too, would like to see what you
describe.

I'm sure there will be some more considered reviews along from the old
hands on this list, but after having a play with this program I think a big
well done is deserved for the developers.

What I particularly like:
The Office 2007 style. I'm sure there will be those that dislike it
because it's a bit of a change, but having been using Office 2007 for
several months I was very happy to see this style being used, it is, IMHO,
much more intuitive than the 'standard' windows menus lists.

The drag and drop options. It looks like this is very straight
forward to use, especially with the generational and familial group options.
I like how it auto-draws the drop lines, rather than some other programs
where you have to specifically tell them to pick them up, or have to
reposition them by hand.

The selection of charts. I love the father and mother charts. I
didn't see an all people in db chart, but I'm not sure what I'd do with it
anyway. Looks like a pretty good selection to me.

Unexpected behaviour/Niggles
The background pictures don't tile as I would expect. When I have a
slim chart up (for instance the father ancestor chart) the background I
chose tiled vertically, but only the centre portion of the picture was
visible. I would have expected the whole picture to be used and then it
would be tiled vertically and horizontally as appropriate

When starting the program new and with a new chart all the previous
settings are kept, including the background picture. I would have expected
them to reset.

Leading on from that, the possibility to set templates would be
really nice - set up different colours + background + info per family, or
per chart.

Items to display box: a select all/deselect all check box would be
nice to quickly change the viewed information settings.

Using the scroll wheel always zooms into the top left corner. I was
hoping there might be a scroll into the selected person on the chart, or
based on the mouse position.

OK, perhaps I'm being greedy, because niggles apart there is a lot that I
like about this software. Thanks Geoff for the chance to get the charting
module ahead of schedule. I'm looking forward to hearing what the other list
members' first impressions are!

Claire

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Pre-Release Edition Now Available For Free Download

2008-03-06 Thread Jeremy Knowles
Well that depends on why you are producing the chart and who the
audience is for it. My mother was brought up only knowing her two
brothers who were from her mother's previous marriage, and not her
father after she was 4. If I produced a tree for her of her family
showing everyone she is related to, even partially, then she can see
everyone. If I use the technically correct genealogical charts then it
would only show people whom she never even knew existed until my
research (her father was married 3 times and had children with them
all), and miss the two people she knew as her brothers.

Flexibility and customisation allows people to decide what they want to
see.

Jeremy

Why on earth should the parents of a spouse or children of a spouse's
previous/later marriage be included in a descendat tree of a person
who
is *not* the ancestor of those children?

One feature that I have always thought would a good addition is, in a
descendant tree, to be able select to add the parents of a spouse.

Also to be able to add a previous/later marriage of a spouse with the
 children from that marriage.

If done through a right click then you could decide just how much
extra
information to add on the chart.

If the printer driver supports banner style printing, it will work.

Debbie,

Using the Export to File button on the Publish tab you can export the
charts to a variety of formats.

Adding sources to the wall charts will not be available, at least in the

2008-03-06 Thread Hope Bagot Bees
I trust this answer isn't 'off topic' but I don't think so, as Legacy
does seem to be veering towards Windows default programs and it might be
worth mentioning that not everyone LIKES Windows!

I only discovered this icon was 'clickable' when my version of Word 97
finally died last summer and I bought Word 2007 - there seems no reason
to me why it still can't say File somewhere. I am still finding Office
2007 far less easy than Word 97 was and have totally failed to manage
mail merge with it at all.

I just hope this 'picture rather than word explanation' doesn't take
over completely as it might end up like those (to me) totally
incomprehensible picture stories which are now used universally instead
of written instructions - whether you've bought a food processor or a
lawnmower!

However, the new Charting program is just fantastic - I have previously
used TreeDraw Legacy but this is so, so quick and already, looking at a
standard top-down chart I see where I have gaps in information that I
simply hadn't noticed before. Congratulations!

The ultimate goal of creating a large chart is to print it and hang it up
for all to see and enjoy.

I disagree with that. The majority of charts that I produce are never
printed out and just a visual representation of a particular part of the
tree. I like to save in PDF format in as large a page format as I can
manage then send to someone for them to view.

want to be sure that we haven't overlooked anything.

One feature that I have always thought would a good addition is, in a
descendant tree, to be able select to add the parents of a spouse.

Also to be able to add a previous/later marriage of a spouse with the
children from that marriage.

If done through a right click then you could decide just how much extra
information to add on the chart.

Wow - I think that I will have a lot of fun using this program and I am
really looking forward to Legacy 7. I am already thinking of the charts that

I am wondering if in Legacy 7, if it will be possible to incorporate charts
directly into a book thru the publishing centre or if place marks will be
needed and then the charts generated and added separately.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Pre-Release Edition Now Available For Free Download

2008-03-05 Thread Dermot McGlone
Have just had a very quick look at this (15 minutes so far, but going
back for more!), and I must say I like it.

Some things I liked:

1. The general lay-out/look/feel of the screen, i.e., the MS Office 2007 style;
2. The ability, after creating a chart, to change the starting/current
person dynamically, without having to create a new chart each time;
3. Also the ability to change the chart privacy options, chart type,
Etc., Etc., in the same way.

Some things I've noticed may need tweaking/improving:

1. When I ran a Y-DNA Descendants chart, for my grandfather, it
included the adopted sons of my uncle, i.e., my cousins. Perhaps I'm
misunderstanding what this chart should do, but these people obviously
don't share the same DNA as their adoptive father. When this charting
option is built-in to V7, I assume the child-parent status will be
picked up and not include these individuals in a Y-DNA chart.

2. I'd rather that you could zoom in an a particular
individual/marriage/part of the chart, rather than always the
top-left.

As I play with it a bit more, I'm sure I'll come up with further
things in both lists which i could comment on. If any of them haven't
been raised here, I'll bring them to yoru attention.

Thanks, Geoff, for bringing this out, it may keep some of us quiet
while we wait for V7. BTW, your family looks great on the samples,
what beautiful children!

Regards,

Dermot.

Mary,

The way I have done this is to go to the Home page and adjust the size of the
chart so that I can see all the pages. My objective was to stop splitting a box
or marriage over a page break and by using the options on the bar on the left
it was reasonably easy to move the boxes around to avoid this and optimise the
pages.

I have not found a Page Set-up as such but maybe this is what it means.

G.C.,

Legacy Charting doesn't yet have the ability to lock in a specific page
size, such as 11x17. Legacy Charting provides you with the page size in the
lower right of the screen. I see that when you adjust the sizing of the
chart that you can get it to size at 11x17 or 17x11. So it should work as
you desire.

There's not currently a way to suppress spouses, but we'll add that to the

Regarding the tiling of background pictures - when you click on the
Background button (on the Appearance tab), try the Stretch to Frame option
in the Display options. This will stretch the image to the entire chart.

Using the Themes button on the Appearance tab you can create/save templates.

We'll try to enhance the zooming, I, too, would like to see what you

Claire

In version 7 there will be a new Charting icon in the main toolbar. When you
click on it, it will launch Legacy Charting, which will create a chart
beginning with the person you had selected in Legacy.

When you say it will be part of Version 7, will it be totally integrated

Geoff,

I attended your presentation in Tucson a few days ago and when you displayed
the descendants chart, the pictures were large with small descriptions
below. When I use the default settings the pictures are on the left side and
the description is on the left.

Your help section says The Picture Settings tab is part of the main Ribbon

picture within the chart?

can be produced and given as Christmas presents.
I am wondering if in Legacy 7, if it will be possible to incorporate charts
directly into a book thru the publishing centre or if place marks will be
needed and then the charts generated and added separately.

It appears you can copy/paste text on to the charts like a list of sources.

i.e. like an Elizabeth Shown Mills example?

Or you can copy/paste the chart to a word processor program?

I have not explored this in detail as yet.

Question:

After Legacy 7 is released will it be an available option to add the source
documentation to the chart by selecting that option?

THANKYOU!

Regards

Keith

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Pre-Release Edition Now Available For Free Download

2008-03-04 Thread Debbie Freeman
Hello Geoff,

Thank You for the download preview. I like these features.

- Easily email any chart to family members
- Export to .pdf, .bmp, .jpg, .png, .tiff, .psd
- Order a wall chart and have it delivered to your front door
- Includes a thorough help reference system for easy reference

The one feature I really like but was not on the list.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Pre-Release Edition Now Available For Free Download

2008-03-04 Thread CNurc

Claire

Geoff,
Great program but:
The first thing I tried to do did not work. I tried to create a simple 2 Gen

included pictures birth, death and locations but did not want Children's
spouses. I was going to copy the chart to a flash drive and print it on a
printer that handles 11x17.
I could not lock in size or the no spouses for children.
What am I doing wrong?

THANKYOU!

Regards

Keith
