Re: [LegacyUG] Search and Replace spaces at end of last sentence/paragraph

2012-11-22 Thread Doug Laidlaw
Your problem sounds like a general Windows issue. I could do it in
Linux, but I can't think of an appropriate search term. You need it to
search for (a) one or more spaces, (b) at the end of a line. In Linux,
the $ sign can indicate the right-hand end of the line. There may be
an equivalent under Windows. I found the following link, but it may not
do what you need:

Re: [LegacyUG] put part of a tree

2012-11-22 Thread Doug Laidlaw
That should do it. If your part tree is a complete line, you can
select it with the Focus Group options. If you want a collection of
bits, you can put all the fragments in the Focus Group, and produce
a consolidated Gedcom of them all. It will then contain several trees,
of course.

Louise,

It is because of the unknowns which Brian has identified that I enter them as
unlinked individuals, which is your current practice. I do add an explanitory
note to both the grandparents and grandchild quoting the appropriate RINs for

It is possible to run two versions of Legacy on the same machine, just install
the second as "Legacy New". You are correct in saying that you would have to
maintain two databases, especially if their structure has been changed

I forgot to add how you would do it (if you can.) The link I quoted
says that yo can put any search term between quotes, so you put a space
immediate;ly before the end-of-line character. Using the $, it would be
' $' or perhaps '* $'. You need somebody who can write Windows
scripts, the kind of thing for the command line near the bottom of that
link. I have never done it in practice.

RE: [LegacyUG] How do I enter grandchild when parents unknown

One more option. I have a "relationship to parent" status called "unknown".
You could link up children and assign that status. Later it is easy to find
all those with the "unknown" relationship to father or mother.

Because Legacy can't directly open a backup?

I am so over this program! I have set Legacy to open up with my
family tree. Now I am spending the little time I have (I am disabled)
trying to find where Legacy put my family tree. Last night when I
opened Legacy, my family tree opened automatically. this is happening
too many times. How can I find my family tree, the one that opened
last night when I opened Legacy?

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy problems

2012-11-22 Thread M. Brenzel
Are you backing up the tree to the thumb drive or is the file there a .fdb
file? If you are backing it up there, it is a .zip file and you can't open
that directly from Legacy. Legacy will only open .fdb files.

If, however, the file on your thumb drive is the database itself (.fdb file),
then go to the General tab on Options->Customize menu. In the 2nd block on the
left is "Starting Family File". This setting will determine which file is
opened when you launch Legacy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy problems

2012-11-22 Thread Ron Ferguson
It does take time to learn how to use your program. You say that you have set
it to open with your family tree, presumably using Options>Customise. For me,
this setting does work.

You ask where is your family file, provided Legacy is installed to the default,
and you have not told legacy to save it elsewhere (like a thumb drive), you
will find it in C:\Legacy\Data, so using File>Open Family File you should set
the box at the top of the Open Screen to that location. You should then find
your family file in the large box below: it is of the form *.fdb where the * is
your file name. If you have told Legacy to save it elsewhere then only you will
know where it is.

[LegacyUG] Source Problems

2012-11-22 Thread kinhunter25
Running Windows 7 pro fully updated and Legacy latest update.

In the process of converting all census records to the newer formatted style
and currently working on the 1860 US records.
Have about 30 people (involving about 7 different families but all
intertwined) in the 1860 Boone County, Iowa census.
I have the complete census transcription entered for each person involved
under Notes in their individual Events/Facts.

I have double checked all of these people both in this particular census
and all other census records I have converted by going to the Family report
for each individual family and making certain the correct information is
there and that there are none of my old style sources still showing.

I have successfully worked my way through several years of census records
without a problem but have really run into one with these from the Boone
County, Iowa 1860 sources. I have gone back and checked to make certain the
correct information is showing and none of the old style records were
accidently left several times. Everything looks good and I found nothing
that looks out of place. (BTW, I am not inferring that there is some kind
of weird problem with the 1860 Boone County, Iowa census itself.)

Problem(s): As the Events show under each person in the Family Reports, the
1860 census record shows correctly BUT with no Source number. The source
is missing entirely in both the Source Citations and the Bibliography at the
end of the report for every family involved in this census. This is
consistent throughout the 1860 Boone County, Iowa census and has NOT
happened at any time previously for any other 1860, 1850, 1840 census
record.

What is going on and how do I fix this?

put the family tree on this computer also. There is only the sample

family file should just open up, like it did last night, This is very

For me, this setting does work.

You ask where is your family file, provided Legacy is installed to the
default, and you have not told legacy to save it elsewhere (like a thumb
drive), you will find it in C:\Legacy\Data, so using File>Open Family File
you should set the box at the top of the Open Screen to that location. You
should then find your family file in the large box below: it is of the
form *.fdb where the * is your file name. If you have told Legacy to save
it elsewhere then only you will know where it is.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy problems

2012-11-22 Thread Bain Family
If I understand correctly, Legacy will open your data according to where you
have told it to open... or where you last opened it from. If you saved your
data to a thumb drive, then opened the data from the thumb drive (such as to
confirm the data is indeed there), Legacy may be thinking you have
transferred your data to the thumb drive and therefore the thumb drive is
now where you want to work from when starting. This is standard for many
software programs, not just Legacy and not just genealogy programs. Many
programs automatically open where it was last told the data was located --
in this case, your thumb drive.

With Legacy open, if you go to FILE in upper left, you can relocate the
"working" data file you wish to use. You should know where your data is
stored on your computer and therefore can locate it from this window. If
you do not know where it is, now is a good time to do so. This is how you
can find it:

(Be sure your thumb drive is NOT connected.)

After clicking FILE this new window opens. If you DO see your data file on
the right side of that window, make note of where it is located by writing
down the path from the address bar near the top.

If you do NOT see your data file on the right side of that window, scroll
the left side up or down to COMPUTER and click once to highlight COMPUTER
(or if you have multiple drives on your computer and know which drive your
data is in, click the appropriate drive). After that, click once in the
SEARCH BOX in the upper right of this window. In the SEARCH BOX, enter the
name of your data file and ENTER; this will start a search of your computer
to find your data file. You are looking for a TYPE OF FILE called Legacy
Genealogy Software with a DATE MODIFIED of probably last night (or when last
you indeed opened your working data). When you find it, make note of the
location by writing down the path from the address bar near the top.

You can click on this data file and Legacy will now open it.

After doing this, let's check to be sure the correct default location is
entered in Legacy. Do this by:

At the top, click OPTIONS>CUSTOMIZE and a new window will open.

In this new window, click the LOCATIONS tab.

In the LOCATIONS tab, the top blank/box will be the Default Location of
family files. Confirm the correct location is in this box (you should have
made note where the "working" files are from the previous steps). If the
correct location is in this box, you are done; Click SAVE or CANCEL at the
bottom to exit. If the correct location is NOT in this box, use the CHANGE
button to the right to enter the correct file path, then click SAVE at the
bottom to save your changes and exit.

Now go to OPTIONS>CUSTOMIZE; in the GENERAL tab choose how you desire the
program to startup. You can choose the view and the starting family. You
can also choose to "Always open this file" which may be what you desire if
you only work with one family file.

Exit completely out of Legacy and reopen. Your working data file should now
open for you.

In the future, when you want to save to your thumb drive instead of to the
default backup file, go to FILE>SAVE AS> YES and continue to save to your
thumb drive. BE SURE to give this thumb drive file an alternate name so you
know it is the "save as" file and not your "working" file. Such as, if your
"working" file is SMITH FAMILY then maybe the file saved to the thumb drive
could be "SMITH FAMILY saved to thumb drive". It may be a bit unorthodox,
but at least you know by looking at the file that it originated from your
SMITH FAMILY file, but is not the "working" file so you don't confuse the
two files.

I hope this helps.

It sounds as though you have (accidentally) clicked on the option to
exclude this Source from Reports.

Open the Master Source and look in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Sorry about my last post - I'm not 100% sure this will work either!

Exactly what have you found: your backup which will have the form *.zip, or
your family file, *.fdb? And where is it located?

Without this information I'm afraid that we cannot really answer your question.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy problems

2012-11-22 Thread MJ SA
I found it on a new thumb drive I got last night. the strange thing
is, the new death date I entered did not save last night.

So on my new laptop, I have been testing Legacy. I saved it in the
Data folder and did the other tips on saving you all gave me. Since
now I know where the file is. One time it opened with my tree, a few
times it did not and I also got a few errors messages.

At least now I will have the one thumb drive to back up my family file
to, so I will be able to locate it. As for the errors, I will have to
email legacy and ask what they are.

Thank you for all your help.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy problems

2012-11-22 Thread MJ SA
I was doing a bunch of searches, than I did the search modified by
date and thank God it has the time on it, so I found it and this did
have the additions made last night. Thank you so much

Before I do anything, I want to make sure I do this correctly.
Options-General- I chose Open Last file used automatically.

Now on the various ways to save it on the computer and my thumb
drives, so I can put it on my new laptop (Windows 8). I am not
shutting this computer until I get it right.

too many times. How can I find my family tree, the one that opened
last night when I opened Legacy?

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy problems

2012-11-22 Thread Ron Ferguson
Firstly, please can we be clear about the usage of the word "saved". As you
make changes to your family file i.e. when Close or Save on exiting any screen
then Legacy saves changes used to the database - your Family File, and to the
location from which you opened the Family File.

When you exit Legacy, after making changes, you are asked if you wish to make a
backup. Always answer "Yes", and select what you wish to backup from the check
boxes on the next screen Whether you wish to use Legacy to backup your images
is up to you - I don't, as I put them in Dropbox.

Until you are really familiar with Legacy I would keep your Family File (*.fdb)
in your Legacy>Data folder. If you wish to backup onto your thumb drive that is
fine, so you can either put it in Legacy>Data, or on a thumb - there are pluses
and minuses to both methods.

To open the backup you need to go to File>Restore family file, and on the next
screen go to where the file is (use the small box at the top) and select the
backup from the list in the large box. You will be asked to give it a name, and
I suggest that you do not give it the original name , and do ensure that the
small box at the top has the path to the Legacy Data folder. You can always
change the file name later (File>Save As).

NO! If you save it to the thumb drive to "back it up" and you choose
open last file, it will not be able to find it unless the thumb drive is
inserted. You should set it to always open the specific file on your
hard drive that you want to work with.

Options > Customize > General Tab > Starting Family File select always
open this file and choose your file from the drop down list.

After you close the file, use windows explorer top copy and paste the
file to the thumb drive.

After copying the file to the thumb drive, move the thumb drive to the
new computer and copy and paste the file to the location you desire and
repeat the above steps on the new computer.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy problems

2012-11-22 Thread Doug Laidlaw
As others have pointed out, your backup is a .zip file. You can't
open it but you can restore it. ^That is what a backup is for.
The .fdb file is updated all the time, you don't need to save it at
the end.

In the Customise menu, you can specify your thumb drive to be the
default directory for all your data, but then move or copy your
existing data to it.

Doug.

You need to change that to Windows compatible, and add a Subject.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy problems

2012-11-22 Thread Ward Walker
MJ SA, please be very clear and precise when you use the terms 'backup' or
'save'. As Ron, Doug, and others have been saying, your .ftb family file is
updated (saved to disk) constantly as you use Legacy. Your backup .zip file
is only made when you request it (normally upon exit), and only needed if
you have to create a family file by restoring a backup. Hopefully never.
:-)

Contrary to Gene's advise, I do like the option of keeping the current, live
family file on my thumb drive. If I use two computers, I must carry the
thumb drive back and forth, but I always know where the latest version is.
If you do this, however, make sure to specify the location for the backups
to be on the hard drive of the current computer, not on the thumb drive.

2012-11-22 Thread MJ SA
Maybe I should say I want to "save" my family tree to my "thumb drive"
after I add to it? I do use multiple computers at two different
homes. I really can't recall ever having this problem in the past. My
laptop crashed so I am glad I was backing it up or saving it to the
thumb drive.

I do name my family tree as the date i worked on it. At this point I
have so many backups, saves and who knows what on my computers and I
am probably using all the wrong words I am going to need to do a major
clean up of the older files.

I still don't understand why sometimes when i open my Legacy, my
family tree does not appear.

You are all so patient and I thank you for all your help.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy problems

2012-11-22 Thread Ron Ferguson
Ward,

I do not agree that one should recommend storing the *.fdb file on a thumb
drive. Sure, I put mine on a thumb from time to time, but I know what I am
doing. I suggest that those who are Windows and Legacy literate will not
normally be asking questions relating to file storage and retreaval, and
therefore, it is not advisable to make such a recommendation for an active file.

Backups are a different proposition in that there are positive reasons for
putting them on an external drive.

Sure was hoping you had the answer, but not so this time. The source is
there - it just doesn't have a number and is not listed in either the
Bibliography or the list of Source citations in the back of the Family
report.

It sounds as though you have (accidentally) clicked on the option to exclude
this Source from Reports.

Open the Master Source and look in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy problems

2012-11-22 Thread Ron Ferguson
I did not express myself as clearly as I wanted to in the post below.

What I was trying to get over was that this list has many users without
sufficient knowledge in file manipulation for the use of a thumb drive as a
storage drive for the *.fdb file to be recommended as an intrinsically safe
method for this purpose. (I'm getting tired - it's early morning here!).

Jenny - you did it! I looked at another place for the box that needed to be
checked and it wasn't. Checked it and the report is now correct.

Thanks again for your help!

[LegacyUG] How to include source text/comments on Chronology

When I transcribe the information from Census Reports, Birth Records, etc.
I do so while in the source writer and in the detail: text/comments area. I
thought this was where Geoff was putting his transcriptions also. When he
pulled up the chronology his transcriptions were there. How do I make mine
do that? I am using the deluxe version.

I do not agree that one should recommend storing the *.fdb file on a thumb
drive. Sure, I put mine on a thumb from time to time, but I know what I am
doing. I suggest that those who are Windows and Legacy literate will not
normally be asking questions relating to file storage and retreaval, and

Backups are a different proposition in that there are positive reasons for
putting them on an external drive.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy problems

2012-11-22 Thread Ward Walker
Ron's point is well taken. But here goes...

The 'family tree' that you see when you open Legacy is coming from your
'family file', which has a .ftb windows file extension. It appears that you
have set up Windows to hide your file extensions when you look at the file
names in Windows Explorer. In your case, the .ftb family file is that first
one in your list, below, that says 'Legacy Genealogy Software' for the file
type. (The other 2 files go with it.) [Perhaps the file type could be better
named.]

Ideally, on a single computer, you pick a place to keep this file, such as
the default C:\Legacy\Data on your main hard drive. Once Legacy is
configured to open that file upon startup, you don't need to copy it or do
anything manually with it. Legacy updates it continually during each session
(as well as a few small ancillary files).

In case we accidentally corrupt our family file, or inadvertently delete it,
or in case the disk that it is on crashes, we make backups. Legacy has a
Backup function, which you are now using upon exit from the program, which
creates a compressed zip folder. If you ever need to, you can open Legacy
and use its 'Restore' function to take one of these zipped backups and
create a new family file from it. So, it is safer if you tell Legacy to
store your Backup on a different physical medium than where your family file
is stored (such as a thumb drive or another hard drive). If not, then at
least have some other file backup scheme that regularly backs up all your
user files on some other medium. True, there is nothing to stop you from
manually making a (uncompressed) copy of your .ftb family file and storing
it somewhere as another form of backup. However, the Legacy Backup and
Restore functions are preferable for several reasons: the backup stores a
few other useful files in the zip folder that it creates; the backup is
compressed (smaller); and the backup function can automatically put the
date/time in the file name.

Do not use Gedcom as a backup mechanism.

OK, now in my case (which not everyone likes), I flip things around. When
running Legacy, I treat one particular thumb drive as if it were just
another hard drive -- a portable one. On this thumb drive, I have certain
subfolders just like in C:\Legacy, such as Data, Docs, and Pictures. I try
to keep the drive name constant on each computer, such as the K:\ drive, and
then I configure Legacy to use, automatically on startup, the family file
that I have stored there in the Data subfolder. If I fail to plug in the
thumb drive, then Legacy tells me that it can't find the file and I know to
plug in the drive. Thus, I can take that thumb drive to another computer,
knowing that the family file on it is my one and only 'master' family file.
I never have to worry about which file, on which computer, has my latest
work. As I said earlier, I ensure that the Legacy Backup function stores to
a regular hard drive, not back to the thumb drive.

If you look in the LUG archives, you will see many discussions about other
schemes to deal with using Legacy on multiple computers, such as using
Dropbox or another cloud service. (Internet connection required.) If you do
wish to simply copy a family tree from the hard drive of one computer to the
hard drive of another computer, then moving the latest zipped backup between
computers is a good way. Use the Restore function on the target computer.

Does this answer your questions?

Ward, when you save your family tree to a thumb drive, how do it? Do
you copy if from the Data folder? or export to a gedcom or legacy
folder?

What I was trying to get over was that this list has many users without
sufficient knowledge in file manipulation for the use of a thumb drive
as a storage drive for the *.fdb file to be recommended as an
intrinsically safe method for this purpose. (I'm getting tired - it's
 early morning here!).

I'm sorry. I guess I misunderstood the problem completely.
