RE: [LegacyUG] Panic!

2013-04-10 Thread Donna Newell
The problem is if you contact Dell you will get someone from India that you
can't understand, and they will be very short with you and rather impatient
with you also for your not understanding them. Been through the process 3
times in the last couple of months with a brand new W8 computer, I have had to
reinstall W8 twice, I'm actually getting pretty good at it.
If I might make another suggestion that I have not seen offered. I noticed you
mentioned that you installed Turbo Tax and Java(as a side note sometimes Java
causes problems), and you also installed Silverlight. I would suggest that you
do a restore back to before the problem started. That would probably be before
the other programs and other updates were added. Pick one that was at least a
week or 2 weeks prior to the creation of the problem. Then return and report
on the outcome. I am betting your problem in Java and Silverlight and
compatibility issues with the new version that was installed.
I would only do a reinstall of windows as a last resort, make sure you fully
understand what you are getting into and the implication that come with it. It
wipes out a lot of stuff and you end up starting from scratch in SOME
instances. By doing the restore it is much safer and you are picking the time
to go back to, if it doesn't look right just go back farther.
I am anxious to find out if this will work for you. It is a less drastic fix.

Barbara,

I wasn't thinking of Dell, rather a local geek! However you can check the
memory yourself - see:

[LegacyUG] Families Sync with Android

2013-04-10 Thread Dave Johnson
I am the proud owner of a new Nexus 7 running the Android OS. I downloaded
the Families App on the Nexus and the Families Sync on my windows 7
computer. Whenever I try to "Write Family File to Device", it first tries
to convert my Family File to SQLite Format. It shows that most if not all
of my census images are missing (they are stored in c:Legacy/Docs/Census).
In any case, I receive the message that reads: "SQLite Error - AUTOINCREMENT
is only allowed on an INTEGER PRIMARY KEY. It happens on the same
individual each time.

I've ran the Legacy File Maintenace but still get the same error.

Any assistance is appreciated.

Oh, waitI know if I did anything with media, it was back when I was still

I do not know how many important files and programs you might have on your
computer. Or how old it is. But I do know that after a while it seems Windows
gets "confused" and flaky things start to happen. I would bet if you
reformatted and reinstalled Windows (Dell can help with this or they should
have given you a CD), all your problems would be solved. Even the supposedly
"incompatible" program would work.

Of course, this means you need a great backup of all your data on the drive so
you wouldn't lose anything. There is always something you forget about and
doing this wipes out everything on your disk.
(Kind of a last resort deal!!)

A good solution. If you have any media files that you include in Legacy
(pictures, etc) I would think you would need to copy them over to their
respective places also.

Re: [LegacyUG] Panic!

2013-04-10 Thread BK Ford
I have had a thought that might solve my immediate problem of converting the
.fdb file to a gedcom, through Legacy, maybe. I have an old laptop that is slow
as molasses but still configured to use on my network. I am now downloading
Legacy 6 onto it. Then I will use a thumb drive to copy the .fdb file onto the
old computer and hopefully get it to limp along long enough to convert a
gedcom. No, I do not want to continue to use the old one, just for Legacy. It
takes forever just to open a program. [The download is now finished on the old
computer; I'll transfer the file and hope to convert it to a gedcom, save it
onto the thumb drive, and then import the gedcom into FTM 2011 I guess. I'm so
sad not to be able to use Legacy. It took me weeks to learn it.] I do see that
I left my Legacy folder on the C: on the old laptop, so I'm just going to
replace the .fdb in that folder (last modified 6-18-2012) with the latest .fdb
on my new computer (updated this March). Then, at least all my "stuff" is
working on the old computer.

Am I making any sense?

Thanks, Paul. We tried Legacy 7.5, while the tech support guy was on my
computer with me. Same problem as with v6. Program itself opens, but can do
nothing with opening a file. Trust me, I would like to use Legacy. I started
with FTM some years ago and then switched to Legacy so already know I prefer
it. But, frankly, I have to have something that works. I have spent many months
of my time with research, etc., as you all have. This is just sickening.

Okay, I can call Dell. They spend hours on the phone, though, and I don't even
know anything to tell them right now except that one of my software programs
stopped working. You know the drill--hardware people blame software, and vice

2013-04-10 Thread BK Ford
I have decided that is my only option remaining (short of sending my file to
one of the group who volunteered to convert it to gedcom for me). I will make a
copy of my .fdb in case opening it into FTM 2011 messes it up (not sure if I'll
even know if it messes up or not)at one time I read somewhere that some of
the sourcing doesn't come in correctly, when bringing in a legacy file into
FTM. But right now I don't have too much choice.

Barbara,

Yes, some people have reported problems with FTM, but to be honest it seems to
be hit or miss. Many of those have huge, complex files. I have imported into
FTM (don’t use it anymore, I like Legacy much better) and I had very few
problems.

You really have nothing to lose. It will allow you to look at your data, and
depending upon how large your database is you can spot check it for accuracy.
If it looks pretty good, you could use FTM to create a GEDCOM that you could
import into Legacy.

I’m assuming Legacy 7, as you might get that to work. I’m not sure if there is
any hope of getting Legacy 6 to work.

Right now, in order to look at your data, you need to use a program other than
Legacy 6. FTM might do the trick, but so might the free version of Legacy 7.

I do have family tree maker 2011 on hand. But when I was looking at some

I am now desperate. I spent some time with the tech support people at
Milennia looking around on my computer. He could not solve the problem. He
did try 7.5, and it returned the same error. He said there must be some sort
of conflict on my computer, but he did not have a clue what it might be. He
was very apologetic. He set my BitDefender antivirus software to Game Mode
and thought that might do it, but no. The program actually opens, but the
second I try to open a file, like the Sample file (and he also created a
test file, but same thing), it returns the error. I used the program on this
same Windows 7 computer not very long ago. The only programs I have
installed since that time, according to my Control Panel, are Turbo Tax and
Java and something called Microsoft Silverlight (I didn't actually install
that--don't know what it is or where it came from). I uninstalled Java. No
change.

He suggested that as long as I use this computer, I probably can't use
Legacy. That doesn't make sense to me, as I used it on this very computer
not long ago.

He said the incompatibility issue is not that uncommon, and yet there is no
"list" of known incompatible software.

I feel totally stranded. Is there any way I can send my data file and have
someone convert it to a gedcom so that I can open it in another family tree
software program (like FTM or something)? Right now, I don't even think I
can create a gedcom, can I? The tech support guy said he didn't think I
could.

Barbara,

I did not mean to give the impression that I was excluding conflicting
software, simply that both options are on the table. I would have my PC
checked out though, especially if it is under warranty.

Actually the man who was helping me with looking into my computer did not
suggest that my computer has problems. He did suggest a possible
incompatibility between some software that I had installed recently and the
legacy program. He said he sees this problem more than one time per month.

The tech support guy said he didn't think I
could.

Please help

The tech support guy said he didn't think I
could.

Please help

I would not uninstall or change anything. Download Fixit and follow
its lead. As I recall you just tell it the program with which you are
having a problem and it analyzes the situation. It is safe to use and
can't hurt anything.

Did support have you check the eventviewer error log? If not, it is
very easy. For Windows7:

1 - In Start - Search, type eventvwr (that is an abbreviation and is
correct to enter).

2 - Go to Windows log / Application tab

3. Look in the leftmost column for critical errors - like the red
exclamation point in this screenshot example (click on Full Size to
view the screenshot):

http://screencast.com/t/YjyVpRgMer

4. That may give you a clue as well as an ID in the Event ID column.
You can then Google for Event ID 10 - or whatever ID you find.

Re: [LegacyUG] Panic!

2013-04-10 Thread Ron Ferguson
Barbara,

I'm afraid that I have just had three hours sleep - I spent much of last
night working on a rewrite of my Photo Album webpages (not yet finished) so
have not really had chance to absorb the possible causes. What is clear is
that it is an installation problem, or an interaction from another program.
The fact that you got so far indicates that it may be the latter, although
by no means am I ruling the first option out.

Have you recently installed *any* other program - especially, but not
exclusively, an antivirus or firewall? BTW. have you tried closing down your
PC., leaving it for a few minutes and restarting - if so does it still stop
at opening the Sample file. I know many people still run V6 on WIN7, so that
is unlikely to be the problem. You may like to try uninstalling, deleting
the C:\Legacy folder shutting down your Anti-virus and Firewall while
installing Legacy - this is not something which I would like to do myself
btw..

There is one other thing which comes to mind, how long have you had the PC.,
and was it new? some years ago on my then a few weeks old WIN XP, I kept
having problems running programs (which makes me ask whether you have tried
running other programs?) only to eventually find out that I had a defective
RAM.

I know that Brian is following this thread, maybe he can advise whether
contacting their technical dept. will help, I'm not sure, but nothing will
be lost by so doing.

As you will have gathered these are just a few random thoughts, dotting i's
and crossing t's, when I am more awake, I will switch my head on!

Ron,
I am sick. I have tried everything. I really thought I had it. First, I made
sure the user controls were not in place in Windows. (I rebooted after just
about everything I did.) I followed all your steps, parking the Data folder
and the .usr files (on my desktop) and then uninstalling AND deleting the
Legacy folder from C:. I then did a fresh install directly from the web
site. I really thought it was going to work. After saying it was a
successful installation, it asked for the language and let me put in my
customer number (to unlock my deluxe edition). (At this point, my data
folder is still outside the software, parked on my desktop.) It even asked
what I wanted to do. I chose to open a sample file. At that point, the
hateful error message (same one) came on the screen, and I had to close the
progam. This tells me that there is no corruption in my data folder or the
.usr files. Now what? I am so upset.

It sounds like your computer is in big trouble in some mysterious way.
You could try TuneUp Utilities. http://www.tune-up.com/

A free trial is 30 days I think so you don't have to buy it.

The initial setup asks a lot of questions. It's not hard if you take it
one step at a time but it takes awhile. It will go through your
computer in depth and fix most problems. What I mean by 'most' is that
sometimes reinstalling your operating system is the last but only resort.

Instead of picking and guessing your way through one possibility at a
time TuneUp is like having a mechanic inside your computer.

If you want on-screen support I will work at an hourly rate. You can
contact me through email.

RE: [LegacyUG] Panic!

2013-04-10 Thread Paul Gray
Hi Barbara,

It's possible that someone is out there who could open your file and create a
GEDCOM, but it would need to be someone with V6. (Or, maybe not)

I know you want to stay with v6, but given the situation would you consider
upgrading to v7? It's possible that v7 would run on your computer, when v6
wouldn't.

Might I suggest downloading the free version of V7, and seeing if you can at
least open the sample file on it with your current computer? As long as you
have saved extra copies of your V6 files, it doesn't preclude eventually going
back to v6, but it might at least allow you to access the data you need in the
short run.

There are two considerations. You would want to save an extra (maybe two)
copies of your current v6 family files, because the 'working file' gets
converted to a new format when it's opened in the new version of Legacy. That
converted file can never be opened in V6.

Also, I think there are issues (manageable, but certain things need to be done)
with two versions of Legacy on the same computer, it might be safer to totally
uninstall V6 before doing that.

Re: [LegacyUG] Panic!

2013-04-10 Thread BK Ford

I am now desperate. I spent some time with the tech support people at Milennia
looking around on my computer. He could not solve the problem. He did try 7.5,
and it returned the same error. He said there must be some sort of conflict on
my computer, but he did not have a clue what it might be. He was very
apologetic. He set my BitDefender antivirus software to Game Mode and thought
that might do it, but no. The program actually opens, but the second I try to
open a file, like the Sample file (and he also created a test file, but same
thing), it returns the error. I used the program on this same Windows 7
computer not very long ago. The only programs I have installed since that time,
according to my Control Panel, are Turbo Tax and Java and something called
Microsoft Silverlight (I didn't actually install that--don't know what it is or
where it came from). I uninstalled Java. No change.

He suggested that as long as I use this computer, I probably can't use Legacy.
That doesn't make sense to me, as I used it on this very computer not long ago.

He said the incompatibility issue is not that uncommon, and yet there is no
"list" of known incompatible software.

I feel totally stranded. Is there any way I can send my data file and have
someone convert it to a gedcom so that I can open it in another family tree
software program (like FTM or something)? Right now, I don't even think I can
create a gedcom, can I? The tech support guy said he didn't think I could.

Please help
Barbara

Re: [LegacyUG] I need help copying my Legacy file to my new Android tablet

2013-04-10 Thread Sherry/Support
Please do not include pictures in your emails to the group.

I would also suggest that rather than putting your entire message in the
subject line that you write something in the body of the email to give us a
little more information about your problem.

Do you have an app for your Android device or are you trying to install
Legacy and view the Family File on the Android device?

You can't run your Legacy or view your Family File on your Android tablet
without an Android app designed specifically for that.

You need to get "Families 1.0" along with the Families Sync and sync the
data file to your Android.

You can get more information through the Legacy Online store
www.LegacyFamilyTree.com > Buy Now! > Mobile Apps.

Sherry

This is just an idea, but I had Legacy 6 and Legacy 7 on my computer at one
time and it worked fine for me. I do this when a new version comes out and
I'm not sure if I will like it.

Delete any desktop icons for Legacy. Make a new folder on your C drive and
call it Legacy 6. Do a fresh install into this folder rather than directly
to the C drive.
Your folders will look like C:>Legacy 6>Legacy>(all the files associated
with Legacy: backgrounds, data, etc. etc.)
You can then send a new icon to your desktop from the file found within this
group of files.

about everything I did.) I followed all your steps, parking the Data folder
and the .usr files (on my desktop) and then uninstalling AND deleting the
Legacy folder from C:.

Thanks for the suggestion!

However, I don't always enter my own phrasing; for collateral relatives in many
cases the default phrasing is fine because I don't intend to include them in
any written/published document - they're just there for research purposes.

Yes, that is a simple way, but if you edit the original Sentence in the
Master List it would save you having to open the Sentence Override tab
and type [Notes][Sources] every time. You simply put "[Notes][Sources]"
in the bottom field (labelled "If Desc, Date and Place are empty.") I
have done this for a couple of Event Sentences, except that I preface
[Notes][Sources] with a bolded [EventName]: because that is how I like
my Events/Facts to start.

Re: [LegacyUG] Sentence definition-editing

2013-04-10 Thread mbstx
I do something I think is much simpler. On the Edit Event for dialog box, in
the lower half I click on the Sentence Overide tab.

In that box I put {Notes][Sources].

Then when I go back to the Notes tab I can enter a sentence or several
paragraphs in any way I wish.

Another LUGer suggested this some years ago and I've followed it ever since.

The MS Fixit program can often fix the problem with the installation
software in a Windows environment. The problem is almost certainly
with Legacy not with Windows.

Thank you for the suggestion, Virginia. I will try the other steps suggested
first and then this suggestion. I did have a computer technician look at it,
and he assures me it is not a Windows error but is a Legacy error.
Thanks,

It really isn't too difficult to edit a Sentence Definition.

There are 2 elements to a Sentence: words that will never change (be
the same for every record) and words that will vary with each record.
For example, you could compose a Census Event sentence which will read:

He appeared on the England census on 30 March 1851 in Canterbury, Kent,
England.

for Joe Bloggs, or

She appeared on the Wales census on 07 April 1861 in Mold, Fintshire, Wales.

for Jane Doe.

If you looked at the Event Sentence which would create the above, you
would see:

[HeShe] appeared on the [Desc] census [onDate] [inPlace].

You will notice that all the words which vary from one record to the
next are enclosed in brackets. When you are in the Edit Event
Definition screen, you can select from all the options available for
what you want to appear in the brackets. Next to each option is a brief
explanation of what it will add to the Sentence.

To start building an Event Sentence that reads how you want it to,
choose one person in your family file and write down the Sentence as you
would like it to appear for him. Now underline all the words which
might be different if you were writing the Sentence for a different
person - these will be names, dates, places, pronouns (he/she) etc. Now
you will be ready to start building your Sentence in Legacy, selecting
the appropriate option for each underlined word.

If you get stuck, come back to LUG with an example of an Event Sentence
you want to create.

[LegacyUG] Best way to source?

2013-04-10 Thread Tony Rolfe
Hello, Jenny

Thanks for the advice.

What I see on the site is almost exactly what I see in the e-mail. It
is just a transcription, not an original source.

I started using a Church record, transcription template and I guess that
is actually the way to go.

Thanks again

Tony
