Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7.4 now available

2010-01-31 Thread Carl Cox
I have been trying 7.4 on the newFamilySearch. It works great except for one
problem: The list of names on the left that are being worked on can be
scrolled by the wheel on the mouse. But I often wish to scroll the screens
on the right, and am used to using the wheel. When the mouse cursor is on
the data screens on the right, I expect that screen to scroll with the
wheel, but instead I move a name on the left list and the program obediently
starts to retrieve the new data. I recognize that the wheel works that way
in many programs, and I can have that problem in those programs, but it
seems that the wheel would be more useful in moving the data rather than
selecting a name on the list.

Am I being too picky?

The names the filter works on depend upon the one that was highlighted in
Legacy when you choose nFS. Filtering just uses those same names. I have
18000 names in my database, so selecting all the names is not an option.
Similarly, tag or focus requires working on the Legacy database, which
requires exiting the nFS screen then re-establishing it. All I want to do is
change the original highlighted name so I can use a different snippet of
names to work on, but I don't see how without the exit and re-signing in.

[LegacyUG] ver 7.4

nFS/legacy 7.4 would not find them. I again brought up Cassius and selected

advanced search and I put in 'casey' and got a hit. Then I tried again, and
could not get 'Advanced Search' to come up again. I can go to nFS and find
it, but I would think there should be a way for me to tell the program that
I want another search even though the program has tried 3 times with only 1
hit. Am I missing something? I cannot find a way to search for Cassin.

The 'easy pickins' on our genealogy were done long ago, and the hard part
well worked over, so I am picking ancestors and looking for descendants, my

exiting the nFS list and re-entering it. It would sure be useful. For my

be required.

I get the same message from time to time when I have the split screen.
Without thoroughly researching it, I have the impression that if I move from
the 'highlighted' side to the other with some commands, the program assumes
I am trying to 'drag and drop' to the same one I started with. I have found
that usually if I click the blue grayed-out band to highlight it before I
click somewhere else, I seldom get that message.

A comment on copying from one side to the other, which you may already be
aware of. When you are filling out the individual screen you can just click
the title of the box to copy from the last saved individual. Thus, when you
are entering twins, you can just click 'date' and 'in' to copy the date and
place. You can do the same thing across the split screen. If you have the
same person in both, but only partial or incorrect data in one side, you can
click to edit, then save, on the correct one. Then on the other side, click
to edit the same incorrect person. Now you only need to click name, in,
date, or other field to copy it. I don't know if the same would work on
events or notes or other screens, but it is sure quick and handy on
individual data.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Cleaning up Master Location List

Well, I am getting well along in my clean up. Doing it one by one, but
I stop and do the "Add USA" and combine duplicates frequently. Most of
the problems are commas I stuck in before I knew what I was doing. (I
guess that presupposes I know what I am doing not, which is not
necessarily the case.)

The main problem that takes so much time is that one cannot go through
in order, because every time an entry is corrected, the screen jumps to
the corrected list item and I have to find my place all over again. Is
there a fix of any kind for this? A way that allows the list to remain
at the same spot the incorrect item was located, so I can move on to the
next one to be corrected without having to hunt for it? Like a little
switch that toggles (wishful thinking, no doubt.)

Thanks for any helpful hints.

Jane S.

for me to understand that it was just Legacy doing it's thing and thus not
being available to respond until it completes it's task. Other programs will
do remote tasks, but they usually give some indication that they are still
there. I wonder if Legacy could do that?

I am going over an extensive bunch of my ancestors, synching them with LFS.
I edit the starting person, currently using descendants. You can also select
ancestors, tags, or end-of-line, and choose how many generations. Edit is
near the upper left corner of the LFS screen. Once you decide rather to use
ancestors or descendants, you just select the starting person, and have them
underlined on the family screen when you initiate the LFS screen. That way
you can choose whichever family or linked families you want to work on. Of
course when you have as many submissions over as long a time as my family
has, you have a tremendous job cleaning up the many years of zealous
research. (This would probably post better on the LegacyFT email group.)

Re: [LegacyUG] Any Way to Transfer Family Tree from Legacy to FamilySearch.org?

2015-05-01 Thread Carl Cox
Yes, with the Legacy FamilySearch integration. You can move individuals either
way, to or from FS/FT. You can also move a GEDCOM into FT, but before it is
integrated into FT you have to individually ensure that each person is not
already in FT, and then link the person in the correct place. FT ‘quarantines’
each individual in the GEDCOM until the integration is done. So, yes, you can
enter groups into FT, but you have to handle each one individually. If part of
the group are already there, I prefer to enter the others with Legacy FT. If
none are there, it can be done either way. If you decide to put in a GEDCOM I
can help you find the place to upload the file.

FS is trying to ensure that the new entries do not cause further problems, and
I applaud their efforts. Almost everywhere I look in my databases on FT I find
duplicates and vital statistics that need correction. I probably have 40,000
names I feel some responsibility for, and it takes about an hour to correct one
family.

Re: [LegacyUG] Why don't I receive emails?

I will compound the problem. Legacy is a busy email site. I cannot remember a
day without some emails. I also never have a hint that I have missed any
emails. And of course I have no idea why some fail to receive all the posts. I
wish I could help.

On the two points that have been raised for this issue,

1) I frequently will not receive any email from the list for several days and
then it starts again. I simply go online to the archives where I always find
that there is none for the missing days. Apparently everybody had other things
to do. No problem.

2) As stated by CE, I constantly receive posts replying to previous posts that
I never received. Fortunately the previous posts are usually embedded in the
replies so I can tell what the subject is.

Re: [LegacyUG] When you die / GEDCOMS / Legacy fancy features

2013-12-07 Thread Carl Cox

>

To find the place to upload, sign in, select Family Tree, then Search, then
Genealogies, scroll down to Submit Tree. The Submit Your Tree site has
information about your submission.

Keep in mind that you can submit as many names as you wish (I think), but
each name has to be compared with the current names already in FamilyTree.
No more duplicates will be accepted if the program can help it.

Once it is determined there are no duplicates, then the individuals can be
linked, so each person submitted has to endure both processes, and it can
take some time. But any careful researcher wants to ensure that each
submitted name is put in correctly. It is very possible that there are
errors or additional information to be discovered when linking. If the
information submitted is all new, the process goes much quicker.

[LegacyUG] Run time error 6

2013-12-17 Thread Carl Cox
I am looking at a database I have not used for quite a while. When I start
going down the pedigree, I get a Run Time Error 6, overflow. Evidently that
error happens when creating reports, but I am just looking at the data. I
suspect that there is a bad link somewhere, but every time I try to look for
it I get the error and Legacy closes. I looked at the help screen, which
talks about making web pages, which I am not doing. I followed the steps Jim
Terry suggested, but no change, running file maintenance > check repair. If
I could get it to quite disappearing, I could find the bad link and correct
it. Any suggestions?

[LegacyUG] Adding USA to Locations

2014-01-08 Thread Carl Cox
Reading the somewhat contentious discussions on this topic I decided to try
it. I typed in "provo, utah, utah, usa". I already have that place in my
database, with some different entries for when it was a territory and other
differences. I have my L-8 set for Initial Caps, and I know L-7 will
capitalize initial letters and USA. I have my program set to verify new
places, and I immediately get in the verification box "Is 'Provo, USAh,
Utah, Usa' correct? and if I say Yes I get that garbled location entered.
May I suggest that anyone who wonders how that can happen just try it.

It is absolutely a bug! I have not tried UK, but others have. With the
information posted thus far the programmers should know just where to look
for the problem. I doubt that 'USA' has anything to do with the bug, but
more likely the three letter, all cap country abbreviation.

Re: [LegacyUG] Unlinking/Linking

Right clicking anywhere in the childs area will return "add a brother" and
"add a sister" among other choices. I do not see a plus, but there is a logo
that displays the screen by which you can sort order, select child status,
and edit each child, among other things. I had never seen that logo before.
When you have an empty slot, clicking there returns add or link to a child,
among other options.

When you have set the display for full screen, 6 children can be added, but
with partial screen selected you only get 5 per column.

In both FT and Legacy, you put the parents where they belong, and add (or

cause problems for both programs. Also, I always add the child to the

[LegacyUG] Check date warning

spouse, his parents, or children, I get the warning to Recheck, Accept this
date entry and continue future warnings, or Turn off date validation. I
cannot stop the warning, which locks me out of doing anything, except by
turning off the date validation. If I put a space between the end of the
date and the ]], like [[30 Mar ]], I do not get the warning. I have the 2
parents and 5 children with the same setup on the dates, but no warnings on
them. This sounds like a hard-to-diagnose bug.

If the ones you want to get rid of have been disconnected (unlinked)
from your main tree, then use: View > Tree Finder to see all the
unconnected trees in your family file. Note that you should

Re: [LegacyUG] Merge

2013-01-26 Thread Carl Cox

<>

Legacy's merge feature is one of the main reasons I am a fan. Before Legacy,
to merge two files (you should look at the GEDCOMs before you merge, and
clean up locations, names, sources - whatever - in the form of files, then
drag and drop) I would have the program find duplicates, then present them
to me. There was a specified number they found that did not change, but only
about half of the merged were found. I would look at each merge and see what
other family members needed merging, then write down the RIN numbers of the
pair.

Legacy took care of that. Now, when I do a drag and drop on two files that
contain much of the same people, I will manually merge one couple. Legacy
looks around at all the relatives, and tells you how many more merges it has
found, so the number left to merge continues to grow until it runs out of
duplicates. As I did not search for duplicates, sometimes there are
unconnected individuals that can be found that way. Also I always scan the
name list to pick up the occasional duplicate that computers find difficult
to pick. So your experience is doing exactly right.

The last couple of days it has also been acting strange, and the problems
may be related. (no virus detected in the scan I just made.):
I tried to update my program from one last year to the current one, and now
every time I open the program I get a message something like - We were
expecting a program dated Sep 2012 (or some such date) but we got one dated
Mar 2013.

Then the program clears that message. I again select the file I want to open
and it opens all right. That is, it did until just a few minutes ago.

A little more explanation - I caused some glitch in the normal update of the
program in the deluxe edition, but downloaded the updated version - it seems
like there was a minor problem in that, and evidently there was because of
the message that my file was a later version than was expected. Evidently it
was not completed correctly, but now it won't open at all.

I am stumped, but I am continually amazed at the depth of talent on this
list. I am looking forward for that talent being used in my behalf.

Re: [LegacyUG] Upload to Family Search Family Tree

2013-08-04 Thread Carl Cox

<>

I think that Legacy will only add one person at a time, but that is also
essentially what FamilyTree will accept. Each process requires first searching
to find if the name is already there, and second, putting it in the correct
family location (adding links). A GEDCOM is handier, because you know what
logical grouping of families you want to add. The place to add your GEDCOM is
not obvious.

Go to the home page (“Search” on the top line), then on the search page select
Genealogies, and on that page scroll down. The program holds all names
submitted until each one has been checked for duplicates, so it is wise to look
for them yourself and not add lines that are already in there. After the
duplicate search, you have all your names in there, but unlinked, so now they
must be linked in the proper place. Each name requires some attention
separately, and it is good to add sources there.

BYU has a scanner that will scan all the pictures at one scan per second or
faster to a thumb drive. You could identify the back, then keep them in the
same order so that you can display front and back together while you add the

at your local Family History Center would know of a way to get them done. Or
you might find such a scanner at your location, knowing such machines are

Re: [LegacyUG] Obsolete FamilySearch IDs

2013-09-21 Thread Carl Cox
If you have extensive databases with thousands of names in Family Search, I
don't think it is possible to keep up. There are hundreds of researchers
looking for better data, and it gets posted. It would be like you had many
computers and wanted to keep the data the same on all of them while doing
research on each one. If I find a change in FT, I look to see if it appears
better or worse, and take the action that looks best, but I do not worry
about not keeping up. If you find an easy way to keep synched on thousands
of names, let me know.

My use of my Legacy file must be different from others. The place I am

The software I use on my web site requires a GEDCOM input, and does not
handle events and sources well, if at all. I strive for accuracy, but if
anyone desires more details, I am glad to supply them. I chose my
display software because it displays much like Legacy, with families,
notes, ancestors and descendants. The family who looks at the web site
are mostly interested in the content, not the provenance. Also, the new
FamilySearch web site is not yet ready for sources, and probably will
never accept events, unless a new GEDCOM standard is accepted.

A census does not give the birthplace, except for the state, so if you
feel justified in putting the city and you cannot find birth evidence,
it is more accurate to use 'of'.

The merge in Legacy is one reason why I went to it in the first place.
It intelligently looks for merges, and finds nearly all potential merges
just given a simple start. It will also automatically merge identical
records.

I don't know how it handles sources or events, however. But most GEDCOMs
don't handle them properly, either. Legacy lets you look at the
differences and decide which to use, and allows you to keep both
different items if you wish.

RE: [LegacyUG] Options>Customise>General>Integrate with Family Search

2012-03-15 Thread Carl Cox

The nFS staff are working very hard to make nFS correctible, and have a
place for good sources. For now, when you make a correction for a name,
look at the >Summary tab, click on the >Name field, and select the
correct version there. Your name will appear as the one that made the
change, so that you can be contacted by someone who has a different
opinion, but the correct information will appear on most screens.

I have quite a number of marriages where the surname gets a warning like
your instance, but they really do have the same surname, so care needs
to be taken.

I use RIN numbers for my WEB program to identify individuals. But when I
abandon a RIN I can reassign it as I will never use it again for that

Just think about what you are going to be using the numbers for, or what
assignments you may give your Legacy program to use the numbers. The

I have used Drag and Drop many times. The method does not merge, it just
puts the individual (or connected group of individuals) in the new
database, then it is up to you to merge them. I would be leery of a
program that would presume to take a new input and merge it with one
already there. Often the new individual has different information than
the one already there, meaning that a marriage or some other valid
information is not in both files.

RE: [LegacyUG] Drag and drop from one database to another

2012-04-26 Thread Carl Cox
<>

As explained earlier, the drag and drop does not merge or link. It adds
to the new database as unlinked individual. If you would drag and drop
his siblings, you could merge them, and Legacy would probably then
notice that the one you dropped needed linking.

It is easy to link. In the new database, click Link to an existing son
(daughter), [in a blank child space] and find the one that goes there. I
usually include more of the family, parents especially, and when I merge
them the children fall into place.

I assume there are notes and events that go along with the imported
individual. If all you are importing is the information on the Add
Individual screen, you can just edit and save the individual in the old
DB, then add in the proper place in the new DB and click the of
each field to have it copy what was just saved.

When I have a long entry with the last end having more than one
variation, I highlight the differing part at the end with the mouse and
start typing what I want. Autocomplete takes up from there.

If I was a fast typist it would probably be faster to just keep typing,
but the way I do it ensures that my typing is correct.

I can see no down side to autocomplete. If you don't want it, you just
keep typing and ignore auto complete. It does not force any acceptance.
If you like what it presents, you just stop typing and it is done. A
win-win situation as I see it.

[LegacyUG] Parish register problem

2012-05-15 Thread Carl Cox
I know this is off topic, but if someone can help it would be greatly
appreciated.
I am looking at a parish register from Westmoreland in the 1780s. I keep
seeing a name with Supp. after it, where the surname should go. Always
the father is there, with any surname, usually not matching the surname
of the child, which would come before the Supp. The mother's name is
always given (in many cases ii does not appear, which is what makes this
term interesting), and no mention or appearance of His Wife or similar
designation. I suspect that the term has something to do with
illegitimate, but then how would they always know the father's name? You
can send me private answers.

One neat thing about Legacy and split screen is that you can save the
persons details in one side of the split and then paste any of them to
the other side by left clicking on the name of the field. I don't know
if that will help. When a field is occupied in the 'copy to' screen,
Legacy asks if you want to replace Alice C. with Alice Chloe (as an
example), so you can compare and remember the change. You do not need to
make any changes in the 'from' screen, just bring it up and save it,
which puts it in the ready memory of Legacy.

I don't think that applies to Legacy's ability to copy information from
one person to another. In split screen, Legacy remembers the last saved
individual information, and that can be applied to any other individual
in either database. I just tried split screen with the same database in
both, and copied my fathers death information in one view to me in the
other view. My experience has been that there are no restrictions in
using the last saved individual information screen anywhere.

We must be talking past each other, because I often use this method
within a single file and between different files in a split screen. The
only requirement is that you "save" the individual information as it
currently is, regardless of when it was entered. That saved information
becomes a template from which you can use any piece of information you
wish, in any database. I don't know if Legacy remembers the last one
saved when it is closed - it very well could. I have 2 files that I
record current happenings in, identically in both, and I call up split
screen, enter the personal information in one database, save it, then go
to the other database and copy each newly entered information by
clicking on the field name. Is that how you are trying to use this
method?

The merge process is entirely under your control. You can select a manual merge
option, and the two you select are presented for merging. You can say "merge"
or "skip" (not the exact words, but you will know). On each merge the program
looks around for other possible merges, and presents them. You can end the
merge at any time you have done enough. If there are identical people to merge
(including the same notes and events), the program offers to go through the
remaining merges and do them automatically, and if the information is identical
with good birth information, it will merge them. I have never had a problem
with the program doing the merging. But each step is entirely under your
control, after the automatic merge which you have to initiate.

Use the copies as suggested, and if you go too far, just start over.

Try it, you will like it!

In addition to importing into a new file, check out the automatic changes the
program will do on the Location master file.

Re: [LegacyUG] Master Location Core+ sorting

2010-07-13 Thread Carl Cox

I thought that the sort program assumed that the 4th place was the country,
so if there is something else in that place it is still treated like a
country. I put whatever I want in the burial place, as the death place
provides the genealogical information.

Re: [LegacyUG] Sorting Children

2010-07-29 Thread Carl Cox
I haven't followed this thread closely, so this might have already been
mentioned, or might not apply. On the family view, right-click on one of the
children, select Children's settings, and then sort. The children without
birth dates sort out first.

Re: [LegacyUG] Sorting Children

2010-07-29 Thread Carl Cox

When a computer sorts by date, it puts the lowest number first, as that is
all it knows how to do. No birth date is zero.

When I have missing birth dates in a family, I use the arrows that allow you
to put them in any order you wish.

Re: [LegacyUG] Entering siblings

2010-07-31 Thread Carl Cox
<>

I have my computer set for single click to move in the family view. I put a
person in the father/mother position who had no parents nor siblings, then
clicked on one of the parents to move them down. A click on the blank child
position brought up the menu to add a brother or sister, which I did. Then I
can click on the child to bring them up to the father position, and clicking
between the father and mother position rotates between siblings. That works
fine, but no parent is listed, just a blank. The marriage list shows
unknown/unknown, and removing the marriage link gets rid of the unknowns,
but it also unlinks the siblings. You do NOT have to add a marriage to link
siblings, provided you begin with one of the children in the father/mother
position, then move them down by clicking the parent spot. Nothing shown in
the father/mother places, but you can add children who will stay together.

I don't think this is a bug, but the program working as I would like it to.

Re: [LegacyUG] Printing charts without showing Living ancestors information

2010-08-15 Thread Carl Cox
One way would be to export a GEDCOM file, using the Privacy Setting tab to
exclude those you wished to. Then there would be none in the file that were
living.
