[LegacyUG] Legacy 10

Is the new version as troublesome as it appears? I have seen a number of
instances in which new users are having difficulties with the new download.

[LegacyUG] Place of Death

2020-12-14 Thread Hogrooter
Place of death: I have some relatives whose residences at death were in a
suburb of a larger city. In the last few days of life they were moved to a
hospital or hospice across the city line into the larger city. For
example. a 95 year old uncle of mine lived in Mableton, GA, a suburb of
Atlanta. Just prior to his death he was moved into a medical facility in
Atlanta where he died. Would you list the place of death as the larger
city or his permanent residence until just prior to his death?

When the place of death is some distance from the residence, I do use the
actual place of death. For example, my paternal grandmother lived in
Georgia but actually died in North Carolina while visiting a son.

How do others handle this?

I live in Virginia and deal with this often. There really is not "correct"
way. I handle this by leaving out the county name.

Re: [LegacyUG] Surname Changed When Immigrated ;-)

2019-11-24 Thread Hogrooter .
In addition to the widespread illiteracy of the time, paper to record
information was considered an expensive luxury. For people struggling to
pay for the basic necessities of living maintaining family records was not
very important. Spelling of a name, birth and death dates, etc. were well
down the list in relative importance. The family bible became an key site
to record family data.

Re: [LegacyUG] Please forget that previous post.

2019-05-08 Thread Hogrooter .
I had a similar problem with MyHeritage forgetting about their earlier
subscription offer. After several attempts via email I finally called them
by phone. The first individual I spoke to appeared to be a basic customer
service agent who wanted me to renew at their full rates. After some
discussion he transferred me to someone who appeared to be more senior and
knew about the low lifetime subscriptions. The man confirmed my discounted
rate and said he had included this in my record for use in future years.
It took some persistence to get everything straight but did work out in the
end. (We will see what happens when my next renewal is due.)

Re: [LegacyUG] Quick question...

2018-03-16 Thread Hogrooter
>From the Help section:

What do the Little Symbols Mean?
A "+" at the end of a parent names means that person has parents.  There is at
least one more generation of ancestors on that line.
A "+" at the end of a child name means that person has children.  There is at
least one more generation of descendants on that line.
A "§" at the end of a child means that person is married but has no children.
An "!" at the end of a child means that person never married and never had any
children.  (The checkbox is checked for This individual has no relationships
and no children on the Information screen.)
A "»" at the end of the Husband or Wife label means that person has excluded
potential problems selected.
If the Husband or Wife label is red (or whatever you have set the Living
Indicator color to be on the Customize > Data Format tab), it means that person
is marked as Living.  (You must have the Highlight Living individuals option
selected also on the Customize > Data Format tab.)  See Living Individuals.
A "½" at the beginning of a child's name means that person is a half-sibling to
the children of the current husband and wife. (A half-sibling only has the
husband OR the wife as a parent, not both of them.  The other parent is from a
previous marriage.)
When FamilySearch integration is turned on, small icons appear at the end of
the names on the Family and Pedigree Views to show if that person's information
is synchronized with the information in FamilySearch.  These icons change to
indicate the status of synchronization and temple work completion.  (See
FamilySearch Icons for more information.)

Re: [LegacyUG] MyHeritage DNA test

2018-01-21 Thread Hogrooter .
I had similar DNA inconsistencies. Ancestry reported primarily
Scandinavian, Irish and Western European. MyHeritage reported English and
Irish/Scottish/Welsh. The only possible explanation I have found is from a
couple of sources: They say that there can be a strong Scandinavian impact
in England based on the large migrations in the 8th through the 11th
centuries. I have no idea if this is a valid reason for the differences.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9

2017-08-05 Thread Hogrooter .
I am a long time Legacy user. Recently, I also started using MyHeritage.
I had the same concerns about the quality of some of their information.
However, I have realized that I am the final judge about what gets added to
my tree. In spite of some questionable sources I have discovered some that
were both new and accurate. Without the new source suggestions I might
have missed them altogether. This is the same situation we have always
faced: Is the new information we find accurate?

I also agree with these comments. I downloaded v9 and its updates and have
encountered no problems. Some of the new features, particularly the hints
from other sites, are very useful. I hope other key sites can be added in
the future.

By the way, I am running Windows 10.

Re: [LegacyUG] Billion Graves Search

2017-04-25 Thread Hogrooter .
When I tried BillionGraves, the correct page was opened but the names,
dates, etc. were not filled in from Legacy. To contrast, when I tried
Ancestry, FindAGrave or MyHeritage, the data was transferred to each one
and a search occurred. I did not have to fill in the blanks.

Virginia has 30+ cities that are not part of counties. They are
independent cities. LFT does not recognize this. Each time I enter a
Virginia city location, the software warns me that this "county" did not
exist at the time. Is there any way around this or must I just live with

Re: [LegacyUG] Ancestor / Descendant Interest (ff)

Using the Help index the interest level for ancestors or descendants shows
on the bottom right of the information screen. Using values from 0 to 3
you can indicate your relative interest in the ancestors or descendants of
the individual shown. This can be used to create lists though search for
individuals you have a high interest in. This can be turned on or off
through Customize 2.7.

Re: [LegacyUG] Family Search error

I am also having access problems. When I had similar issues in the past,
it took a lot of doing to get reattached.

Re: [LegacyUG] no problems

2015-09-10 Thread Hogrooter .
Lynn, I agree with your comments and those of others. I have used Legacy
for a number of years with its wide range of capabilities. I have had very
few problems. When I have had an issue, the technical personnel have
responded promptly and have stayed on top of it until it was solved. My
issue with the software is not what it won't do but learning about what all
it will. It is almost impossible for software designers to distribute a
product that will handle the myriad of requirements that thousands of users
come up with.
