My upgrade was so seamless that I had to double check to make sure it had
made the change.

So far the only mumble was the change in the search file links. Probably
not a problem for most people, but with over a Thousand Angus in my data it
is almost a necessity.
this has happened in previous upgrades, I had forgotten. Prolly an age

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 10

2024-06-22 Thread Cathy Pinner

DeanAdams,
Thousands have upgraded without problems.
Some have had initial problems and sorted them. Some of those were user
created.

Here's an annotated listing of the suggested steps documenting the
problems that various people have had.
They mostly revolve around getting the actual installation file to
download and security software.

Here's the list annotated with solutions to issues people have
encountered during this simple process.

Here's the things to do to make the process as trouble free as possible.
1. Run File > File Maintenance > check/repair on your files. You should
be doing this regularly to keep your database healthy. If there are
errors reported run it again. Errors after the second run are the ones
that aren't auto-corrected and require your intervention. Fix them and
run again.
2. Verify that there are no broken media links. Tools>Media Relinker You
can fix them in Legacy 10 but you need to know they weren't caused by
the upgrade.
3. Backup your family file and media files. Preferably make sure you
also have these backups off your computer either in a cloud or on
external drive.
4. Download 10 from the website. Some people encounter problems because
a) they make a typo when entering their email address, b) the email goes
to spam or doesn't arrive. If it doesn't arrive try a different email
address c) the link in the email doesn't work and they need to copy and
paste the link to their browser. One person reported that his ISP
blocked unknown programs for 24 hours

5. Install 10 and enjoy.
Some people encounter problems with the installation because their
security software blocks it or part of it. Pausing the security software
during installation solves that. If concerned you can go into Aeroplane
mode/come offline for the installation,.
If there is any problem after installation RESTART your computer and it
is usually solved.

Some people are having problems with the Legacy FamilySearch module. The
login has been changed by FamilySearch and is now done in your browser
every time you open the Legacy FamilySearch module. The login
credentials can still be saved in Legacy FamilySearch so you don't have
to enter them every time. Reports say it is not working if you are using
a Ad blocker and tracking blocker on the FamilySearch site as the login
information has to be returned. Some are finding the browser tab is left
open. I see it open and close but the browser often stays open on top of
the Legacy FamilySearch module.

Yes there are some bugs in the new version that people are finding
particularly in new reports, but so there still are in Legacy 9 and
earlier. Only Legacy 10 is being updated with bug fixes.

Hope this helps
Cathy

Jan,
I agree with Henry.
You really shouldn't be using a gedcom to go from Legacy to Legacy.
I would think there is something wrong anyway if it's taking so long for
just 30,000 people.

WHY? Are you using a GEDCOM.
Make a copy (or rename your Legacy 9 file and just open it with Legacy 10.

Legacy 10 will convert your data and you will be off and running.

Hello all.

I downloaded Version 10 and the program came in nicely. I have two family

discovered in my family tree is that the "Birth, Death Dates and Anniversaries"
screen under "Legacy Home" is not working properly. It appears that the
information that should be reported is not loading. (This feature on my wife's
family tree is working just fine.) I have gone through the program's
"Knowledge Base" in an effort to fix the problem but have been unsuccessful.

I would welcome any help in fixing this problem.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy on a website

2024-05-13 Thread hpeterjr
Crystal

I have been doing genealogy for over forty years. My database is a compilation
of research and collaboration with over 1400 users.

I began using TNG (The Next Generation of Genealogy Site Building) since 2017.
I also use the host they had recommended “Simply Hosting”

My data includes over 750,00 individuals and over 30,000 images…

I created this website so that I might share it with others that have the same
interests….

While I know it may not be perfect, so I depend on others to suggest edits and
recommend additions or changes.

I usually update every 7-10 days.

As far as cost with “Simply Hosting”

Domain annually about $15.00 prepaid

Hosting fee (for my size database) about $150.00 annually prepaid

I do not charge for using the website so it is not for profit website (free
searches) although everyone must request a user account (simple process)

The cost of TNG I believe about $40.00 and I paid at the time for the program
owner to do the install.. (about $15 or $20 dollars)

The same cost would apply if you desired to update in the future… the program
owner is involved in the improvements…

And of course if you are skilled enough you can do the installation…. There are
many vides on “you tube”

Search “The next generation of genealogy site building”

Lastly, there are many templates available with the program, and there are also
outside programmers that have developed template you can purchase at an
addition cost.

Kind regards

Henry

Apologies if this is not so much a Legacy matter as a Windows one.

A little while ago when genealogy was taking a brief respite, I unpinned
the Legacy icon from my Windows 11 taskbar but pinned it to what is
probably called the Windows Start menu. Ever since, when I open Legacy
the icon shows on the taskbar as plain white "sheet of paper with top
right corner folded down".

Does anyone know how I can get the proper icon to appear when Legacy is
open?

My old desktop clunker was getting a bit long in the tooth, so the guts of my
upgrade is:

13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-13700KF 3.40 GHz
Samsung SSD 990 PRO 2TB, M.2 NVMe
32 GB RAM
Windows 11 Home, Ver. 23H2, 64 bit
Legacy 9.0.0.443 with 10,000 names

I'm reaching out to see what others think of this, and I wondering the obvious
simple thing, like, is it an issue of a lack of memory ? Should I double it to
64 GB ? Or make the RAM larger ?

The re-install of Legacy went fine, and without issue, and I continue to carry
on my research, do backups, and the odd bit of editing. As I said after the
first start of Legacy, all's well, and I can work away all day if I like.

I thought there might be a slim chance this issue has been dealt with before

I am going back to late 1950, s so the memory is not as good as it once

I also use the same internet provider in Aussiebb.

Not so surprising they have problems solving it when it is only some people

So far there isn't a repair, so for the moment a work around doesn't exist.

I have 1 PC with Windows 11 Pro Version 23H2

8.00GB RAM

Legacy startup times for me
16.6 seconds (without Onedrive installed)
38.2 seconds (with Onedrive installed)

So apps that run in the background slow down your computer. (Just my
experience)
Conclusion: Consult Legacy support, they may have a recommendation.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy slow to start

2023-11-15 Thread Brian Kelly

Some things that can affect the speed with which Legacy opens a file:

Hard Drive speed versus size of your file and media files; (your SSD
should not be a problem here) but if you are opening Legacy or images on
an external drive it could be an issue

Images and their size large images will slow down Legacy display

Are Hints turned on? getting hints may slow the opening

Same with Potential Problems

Samsung SSD 990 PRO 2TB, M.2 NVMe
32 GB RAM
Windows 11 Home, Ver. 23H2, 64 bit
Legacy 9.0.0.443 with 10,000 names

I'm reaching out to see what others think of this, and I wondering the
obvious simple thing, like, is it an issue of a lack of memory ?
Should I double it to 64 GB ? Or make the RAM larger ?

The re-install of Legacy went fine, and without issue, and I continue
to carry on my research, do backups, and the odd bit of editing. As I
said after the first start of Legacy, all's well, and I can work away
all day if I like.

I thought there might be a slim chance this issue has been dealt with
before and resolved by a simple tweak, so I'd love to hear the
technical types throw their solutions my way.

Many thanks
David Cripps in Tasmania

[LegacyUG] Legacy slow to start

2023-11-14 Thread David Cripps

Hi Everybody,

I have a strange issue with a brand new Desktop computer, wherein Legacy
itself might take 20-30 seconds to load at first start of the day.
It's quite disconcerting when it happens, especially as this machine
should be (and is) an absolute flyer.

My old desktop clunker was getting a bit long in the tooth, so the guts
of my upgrade is:

13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-13700KF 3.40 GHz
Samsung SSD 990 PRO 2TB, M.2 NVMe
32 GB RAM
Windows 11 Home, Ver. 23H2, 64 bit

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 Family View Screen

2023-11-04 Thread Brian Kelly

Colin,

That was a typo on my part. As a beta tester I do have a testing version
9.0.0.444 but I did run my test in my copy of 9.0.0.443, the version
available to the public, and got the results I described.

Sorry about the confusion.

It also has an option to change how children are viewed.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 Family View Screen

2023-11-01 Thread Gene Young

Linda,
Turning the computer of rather than re-start does nothing.  When you
turn it off it saves the current state of the computer, as is, including
any errors that exist in memory.  When you the start the computer again
it reloads everything, including errors.  When you do a restart it will
flush the memory and start fresh.  Remember, re-start clears and flushes
memory, turning off and on preserves the state of memory, saving and
re-loading all existing errors.

[LegacyUG] Legacy tip

2022-09-22 Thread John Bernacki
After using Legacy for many years, I just found something that I really
wish I would have known about.

If you are in General Notes and you press control + F, you can find key
words you are searching for. It is far more convenient and effective than
using Search and Replace, especially when you are checking or searching for
information but not wanting to replace words. Has this feature been
commonly known to Legacy users? Perhaps some others will benefit from this
tip.

I use General Notes for my family history stories or biographies, and some
individuals have 30 – 50 pages each, so my “discovery” is a Godsend.

Cheers,

I discovered you can turn it on by bringing up the index. On the upper
right is "options" click on it and you can choose that option from there
also.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy & Ancestry - photos

Ancestry is a website, and Legacy is a program. You can scan your photos
once, but need to upload them separately into their respective programs.
Media is stored separately from your family files, so uploading the family
file isn't enough.

At least that is my understanding.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 10?

2022-01-24 Thread Cathy Pinner

Chris,

It's some time since I tried out RootsMagic direct import of Legacy. It
was with RootsMagic 7. It made a mess of a number of things including
sources. I got a much better result using a Gedcom. I recall another
beta tester reporting a better result using a Gedcom as well. His
concern was not with sources.

So for those wanting/needing to move on from Legacy, I suggest you use a
gedcom for the transfer or check very thoroughly. How well direct import
will work will depend on which features of Legacy you use. I use a lot
of them so I'm not thinking of changing software.

Interesting that their website says "Roots Magic can directly import
data from PAF, Legacy, TNG or Family Origins. It also imports GEDCOM
files .". That would imply that it can access the Legacy database
and should be able to copy the media links.

BUT, their support site says that you need to generate a GEDCOM from
Legacy and import that.

So, which one is correct?

If RootsMagic is installed on the same computer and your images linked
in Legacy remain where they are, there will be links included in your
GEDCOM file used to move your Legacy data. Once imported into
RootsMagic, this program will find the images, based on the links. If
you then, at some point, move or rename these linked images, you will
encounter the same situation as you would in Legacy. RootsMagic, like
Legacy, only links to the images.

I know this is off topic, but when you migrate from Legacy to Roots
Magic, is there a way to transfer everything, meaning what's in the
Media Gallery? The only way I know how to transfer to another platform
like Roots Magic is a gedcom and from what I understand, media does
not get included.

Yes, that is the platform I'll be using.  RM8 seems to be a
significant improvement over RM7.  Its global search and replace
feature will allow me to easily correct the spelling errors caused by
the lack of unicode support in Legacy.

There will be links to the images. As long as you don’t move your images
that are linked to Legacy, RootsMagic will find them, once you import your
DEDCOM into RootsMagic. This is assuming you are installing RootsMagic on
the same computer hard drive where your Legacy resides.

I believe RootsMagic will directly import from Legacy - no need for an
intermediate GEDCOM file.

It appears that the most recent version of Legacy 9 is
9.0.0.*393*. I am using Legacy 9.0.0.*339* so I plan
to upgrade to get to the latest version.

When I export a GEDCOM file, I see these records at
the top that indicate the file was written by Legacy 9:

0 HEAD

1 SOUR Legacy

*2 VERS 9.0*

That seems correct.

However, another Legacy user sent me a GEDCOM file

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 10?

2022-01-24 Thread Mary Ann Latko Groetsema
I imported my Legacy 9 database into RootsMagic 8. All the linked media
came along with the imported data. I did not export my Legacy data to
Gedcom, but instead used the import feature of RM8. It has import
functions for most major software packages like Legacy and Family Tree
Maker.

2022-01-24 Thread Mary Ann Latko Groetsema
Just to close the loop on my question regarding unicode and Legacy, I
received this response from Legacy Customer Support...

*We have not been told the full features of Legacy 10 and you are correct;
nothing is set in stone. That being said, I am pretty confident that full
Unicode support will not be in Legacy 10. Full Unicode support would
require a complete rewrite of Legacy using a different coding base. I have
not been told of any plans for a full rewrite in Legacy 10.*

So it looks like I need to migrate my tree to another platform...

2022-01-22 Thread Ian Macaulay
Beta folks or Legacy support., Can you test? I have a large Database
and duplication of FAG numbers causes the Lagacy to crash after several
entries and then a search by date.

For example Rin 23454 and Rin 65332 have inadvertently received the same
Find a grave number.After adding Rins 10 to 100100 I do a search
for individual with birth date of jan 6 2020. Legacy will crash,
requiring several cleanings to get up and running again.

I think this started with 9, but my memory is not as it was.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 10?

2022-01-22 Thread Chris Hill
That is the issue with not having Unicode support, which is also because
the system is based on a 25 year old programming software.

They really need to move from VB6 to a more modern version, but even M/S
admit that they cannot just convert straight to VB.NET without having to
develop the code.

That said, there are implementations of VB6 working with Unicode, so they
should be able to resolve the issue.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 10?

2022-01-22 Thread John Cardinal
Mary Ann,

Adding support for Unicode is a major challenge for programs implemented with
older technology components. Legacy would not make that decision lightly and
would make the decision very early in the development of the new version. So, I
suspect that Legacy already knows whether or not Unicode support will be added
to Legacy 10, and if you ask Legacy directly, they may tell you. Of course,
they may not.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 10?

2022-01-22 Thread John Cardinal
Brian,

Thanks.

The person who sent me the file has confirmed they are a Legacy beta tester
and created the file with the beta version.

There was another factor that was confusing things--unrelated to the Legacy
version--and I'm addressing that with her now. My GedSite program has custom
support for Legacy features like sentence templates. In the Legacy Export
dialog window, the beta tester was not setting "Produce file for" to
"Legacy". GedSite needs it set that way because Legacy will not include some
of its custom GEDCOM records unless "Produce file for" is set to "Legacy".
GedSite needs those Legacy-specific records.

in the Beta testing group. Your GEDCOM may have come from one of the
Beta testers.

Beta testing is the next step but this can still take a long time.
Version 9 was in Beta testing for over a year as bugs and issues were
tested and sorted out. No telling how long this phase will be for
Version 10.

[LegacyUG] Legacy 10?

2022-01-21 Thread John Cardinal
Legacy users,

I have a question about Legacy and GEDCOM exports.

It appears that the most recent version of Legacy 9 is 9.0.0.393. I am using
Legacy 9.0.0.339 so I plan to upgrade to get to the latest version.

When I export a GEDCOM file, I see these records at the top that indicate
the file was written by Legacy 9:

0 HEAD

1 SOUR Legacy

2 VERS 9.0

That seems correct.

However, another Legacy user sent me a GEDCOM file with this version
information:

0 HEAD

1 SOUR Legacy

2 VERS 10.0

Is there a Legacy 10? I looked on the LegacyFamilyTree.com site and I don't
see any mention of it.

Valerie,
You can load from Legacy to Ancestry but Ancestry doesn't have a place for all
the Legacy information.
Do not then update on Ancestry and plan to download and reimport into your
Legacy file. Ancestry gedcoms are a mess. You'll just add to your normal
problems of multiple files.
By all means use an Ancestry tree to find additional information but enter it
also in Legacy. You can use tree tags in Ancestry to note whether you've done
that or not.

I did just a few people last week when I was feeling lazy and wanted some
people from my Q and D DNA private unsearchable tree on Ancestry. It was a
mistake. Names and dates are OK and I didn't have many events but locations
were awful as I'd entered people from other people's trees and sources created
by Ancestry don't match my style and most were not my sources so had to be
marked as such. I know how to do all that and I'll replace them in time BUT in
the end it would have been quicker to manually enter them all again after
finding and sorting them out on Ancestry. Of course I didn't import them
straight into my file but into a new file and cleaned up locations and marked
the sources by changing their source list name and changed Ancestry's residence
event to Census which is what it usually is, etc first.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Cloud Account

2021-07-14 Thread sarah hughes
I don't think there is a Legacy back-up Cloud account anymore, but you
would need to check.

[LegacyUG] Legacy Cloud Account

2021-07-14 Thread Cindy Custer
I recently decided to create a Legacy Cloud Account so that I could also do
backup files to there,

But the HELP function of Legacy 9 software (version 9.0.0.182) does not have
any information on

It.

When I click on the Legacy Cloud Login screen to register for an account
(see attachment 1)

I receive a Server Error 500 notice (see attachment 2) that the resource
cannot be displayed.

How can I fix this situation?

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Cloud

2020-12-28 Thread Gary 'n Mic McFall
Hi, Jane. Barry Huntsinger requested information, too, so I thought I'd
respond to the group in case others were interested.

I had been using Picasa for years, tagging faces in ~90,000 pictures - a
job that's never done. Anyway, I've been looking for a replacement ever
since google pulled support (a nasty, anti-customer service decision),
hopefully with similar functionality & an import function for face tags
from Picasa. I couldn't find anything that met my needs. I was starting
to panic, wondering if/when Microsoft would update Windows & break the now
unsupported Picasa software.

Then, I came upon ACDSee. It had the functionality I wanted plus more, but
did not have import capability from Picasa. My concern was great, so I
decided to make the plunge, converting manually. It's been a long process,
made possible by my being retired & being home bound thanks to covid.
Their 2021 versions brought a great surprise, the ability to import name
tags from Picasa. I'm working w/ their support, requesting that a future
enhancement include the option to import key words & captions. I'm sure
that at some point, that will be a feature.

I started out w/ their Photo Studio Home software. It met most of my
needs, but after attending a few of their seminars & seeing other available
functionality, I updated to their Photo Studio Ultimate.

https://www.acdsee.com/en/store

I love the software & am very happy that I finally got the courage to jump
the Picasa ship!

Re: [LegacyUG] LEGACY and GOOGLE DRIVE

2020-12-20 Thread Brian Kelly
No. Legacy installs part of itself into the Windows folders on the
computer in which it is installed so you could not run Legacy from
another device by accessing a copy of legacy.exe using Goggle Drive. The
device would not have those Windows folder components which Legacy needs.

Question.

I have my genealogy supporting folders on GOOGLE DRIVE for remote family
members to be able to refer to.

Just got to wondering if LEGACY and it's supporting folders/files could
be part of G-Drive as well?
