Nope, I haven't found the hicap battery for $110 anywhere in the US.

If anyone DOES know of a place selling PA2503s for $110 brand new, let me know! The
only price I can find is $129.

Hi Jim,

I went off to http://www.dabs.com

£78ish IIRC and free delivery!
They sell the normal battery, but for the price, why not get a hicap? =O)

It was kinda strange as just before i was going to buy one they ran out of stock
so I had to get one from ebay, but that was more expensive (although brand new
too)

Its nice to find cheap lib stuff in the UK for a change, although someone states

lol.

After buying my Libretto 100 form a guy down in Derby (UK) I drove the 2ish
hours home, and the first thing I did through the door was take it apart and
overclock it =O)

> If you can't deal with the size of the mini-replicator bar ( and I never

I find it to be a bit of a pain in conjunction with the mouse pad. I have large
fingers, hell anyone typing of these keyboards has large fingers!

> then a PCMCIA solution seems best.

I thought about that, but then thats something sticking out of the side of the
machine.

Im wanting to build a quick release mech for mounting the lib in the car. Power,
serial (for INet) and parallel (MP3's) can all be found from that connector, and
its would be nicer that killing a replicator for (which I only have one of).
I quite fancy a mobile phone adapter too and maybe a parallel web cam on the top
of my screen.
I'd like to keep it REALLY compact, or I'd probably use the mini rep.

Cheers

Dave

Thanks. I knew to expect a little bit of drain (batteries lose charge over
time anyway, plus there's a constant slight drain from the lib while it
looks to see if you're pushing the "on" button, etc), I just didn't expect
it to be that bad.

I'd be interested in this, too. Mine hasn't gotten too much use where I
couldn't plug it in, but I'll be taking it on a long plane trip next month
and an extra battery or two would be very helpful!

Also, is it normal for the battery to discharge when it's not plugged in?
I unplugged my libretto for a couple days and the next time I turned it on
the battery was at 87%.

There are parts inside the replicator... it's not just a physical
thing...

If you can't deal with the size of the mini-replicator bar ( and I never
take mine off, it's just part of the unit to me ) then a PCMCIA solution
seems best. Although most Librettos ( you didn't mention which ) have only 1
slot, so you may have to pick which port you need at the moment.

The L1x0 has a dual slot.

Has anyone ever found a source for the connector that plugs on to the bottom of
the Libretto (the part inside the replicator).

I assume that Toshiba didnt make it in house and that somewhere there must be
another bit of equipment that uses the same plug and socket arrangement.
I'd loe to get my hands on a couple of them to make really cut down parallel and
serial ports, without having to kill a replicator first.

Hi Neil,

My *guess* would be that the battery light would flash for that one. I had a
very slow flashing orange battery light preiously when I was having trouble with
an old battery.

I bought the lib over a year ago and struggled for ages with 20 minutes (yes 20
minutes) worth of battery life. I just bought two brand spanking new hiCap
batteries. Battery life is amazing
Now if I can just figure out how to fix the damn v key grr...

Cheers

So then surely running it directly from car lighter plug isnt going to cause it
too many problems if it is looking out for the correct voltage?

Some yes, some no. Switch mode adaptors are the best, but they're usually

That runs around the same on mine. I think there is some variance with
component differences. The capacitor kicker (rather than the extra battery)
runs fine for this. I think in general, a 12v lead acid cell will run the
lib but won't charge it without the charging voltage (for the lead acid
cell) being present.

Seriously John, I haven't been aiming anything at you, and I don't believe
the other guys have. There's just a natural concern that people new to the
machine and with less expertise than you or I might toast their lib without
considering the risks.

Correct. If you look at the power supply that comes with the Libretto you
see a surprisingly precise 15.000v coming out. Even 16v makes the orange

Invertor from Maplin for £49.99 or 150W for £39.99 (This is a new product

This is probably a happy medium in the fact that you can use it with your

That would be the bit that says:

(10/17/98) It is obvious that you can use your car's battery in the same way
you use the above external battery. Just replace the 12V battery with an
igniter plug, you are ready to go! You even do not need the 15V cheating
battery and the "Y" splitter. Simply start your car first (so the igniter
voltage output will be raised to 13.5-14.5V) and then plug it in. You can
then turn off your car if you are not driving. Don't worry about draining
out your car's battery, it can power your L50 continuously for couple days
if it has been fully charged.

I'd agree it's ok to use the car battery power...but not with the engine

Re oscilloscopes:

I use various of the Pico range - http://www.picotech.com/40_42_100.html -
which are ideal for the sort of stuff I usually have to do on site...I like
*very much* the 40 and 42 that fit into a 25 pin D-Type and goes straight
onto the parallel port.

Hi all,

Just to mention that whilst running my 100CT from a not too good power source,
it received 18 volts.
The power light flashed orange and the machine would not turn on.
Does this mean that the Lib does have some oer voltage protection circuit?

Cheers

Heya Dan,

I wasn't sniping at you in the other comments regarding power supplies etc
:) It's one of those things...if you do it, it will probably work ok...but
it might blow first time. In particular, I'd expect to find older cars to be
worse than more modern ones though in both cases, the cig lighter is usally
wired straight from the fusebox...

I very rarely use mine in the car - when I do, I have a car->12v dc
converter from a previous laptop which I use with the kicker to get it to
start. It's around 80-90% efficient IIRC. I'm waiting for someone to produce
a decent car radio which can read data cds with mp2/3 files as well as
normal CDs (it has to have DAB, with intelligent default to RDS FM, as well,
and it has to cost no more than a couple of hundred quids!)

My background is broadcast engineering, where I expect to design equipment
with 15-20 year lifespans, so like most of my colleagues I tend to be a very
conservative designer. I don't run things near their power ratings if I can
possibly avoid it :)

THe lib gets used all round the world on my travels, including use as an
oscilloscope/signal generator and network debugger, and I write code on it
too...

Pres,
I agree with you. I live in Brooklyn a frequent LI I grew up in Floral
Park. I used to be in the auto industry my self. I am a NYS ATTP certified
mechanic in all areas including automotive electronics and computer control
. actually I am going to be putting my lib50 in a tank bag on a motorcycle
to use as a gps system. lets just say if you think the power on a car is
dirty you should try a motorcycle. I think ill stick with my current
inverter set up using the original lib power cord as it hasn't given me any
problems as of yet but will pick up one of the auto air adaptors soon.
thanks everyone for your help. BTW is anybody interested in another lib50 I
know of one for sale here in NY .

I really feel I must pipe in here, because there's a fresh set of faces
trying to do the "obvious" and plug their Libretto in directly to a car.

DON'T DO IT.

I don't care if so-n-so has done it for 22 years. I know electronics, I know
cars, and I know a dumb idea when I see it.

Do you really think the $100 adapters that take a cigarette
lighter plug into a Libretto/other laptop have nothing but air inside? NO.
They're inverters, regulators, filters. They do a job. Hooking a $1000+
computer to raw dirty power to save a few bucks is just insane.

Take an oscilloscope and look at the power in a car. Nice and clean. Now
crank the engine. Spikes-noise-crud.

Do what you want, but do not disseminate really bad advice just because you
don't know better and have gotten away with it so far.

Subject: RE: in car power supply

Paul,

see my earlier post: what's in the lib is only there to look after charging
the lithium cells and converting the output of the cells into the
appropriate internal voltages - at a guess, 5v, 2.3-3.3 v, 12v, -12v, etc.

The lib will only recognise an external supply if it hits 15v. However, once
it's recognised it, it will cheerfully run on a lower voltage, down to
around ten volts or so - this probably differs depending on individual
machines. What happens when the input volts drop below a critical level is
that the machine starts using the internal batteries...but because it thinks
it's got an external power supply it won't tell you, and when the internal
battery is exhausted it will fail silently - no beeps, no hibernation, no
warning.

From: "neil barnes" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

AARRRGGHHH!

Irrespective of whether or not it worked for John, this is a Bad Idea[tm].
The power supply in the libretto saves space and heat by moving the major
regulation off-board and into the mains adaptor. It's expecting 15.00v and
anything above that level *will* cause problems. The power supply in a
running car is less than clean - spikes of tens of volts are not uncommon
(though running it from a fully charged battery with the other electrical
systems (and of course the engine) off should be ok, if you can get it to
recognise the external power).

As an absolute minimum, use a shunt regulator consisting of a choke
(inductor) in line, a large capacitor across the rails, and a 15v zener
across the rails after a current limiting resistor. A slighly more
sophistcated design would use a low drop-out series regulator instead.
Calculation of the appropriate values is left as an exercise for the student
- assume it needs to supply a peak current of 2A at 15v.

(you didn't think I was going to risk getting shouted at when you break your
lib using my values, did you? :)

The prefered option is to use a DC-DC converter which contains within itself
the necessary chopper, feedback, rectification, and regulation circuits -
imagine using a dc-110 and 110-dc without the 110v bit. I don't know about
the US market, but I've seen these available in the UK. If you can't find a
15v unit, you can use a 12v output unit - these are much more common - with
the kicker circuit from Xin's page.

Sorry to harp on - but like Pres said, if it's worked, you've been lucky.
And replacing your lib is now no longer as easy as going to the shop and
buying a new one.

Subject: Re: in car power supply

I understand where you are coming from pres, but the libretto 50 has
plenty of filtration of its own... the charger is built in to the unit
and if you check the schematics can happily take 16.6 volts, yes your
car can produce a surge greater than this voltage but it is very, very,
rare
There are 20+ people I know who regularly use there 50 ct's in car
via a cig socket, sure fuse it for a bit of extra safety but it is quite
fine...
Yes, spend $50.00 and get an inverter (a lot of which aren't much
safer than your car anyway), if you are uncomfortable with the direct
plug-in.
All I was relaying was that I know plenty of people who do it and I
am one of them... No probs my end for two plus years now...

Best Regards,
   Dan Baker.

The lib 50 needs 14.6 volts approx to run... your car when running is
putting out about 14.7 at the cigarette lighter socket.. go to tandy and
buy a socket that will fit the power on the side of the lib, I think it
is 3.5 ID 6 OD then wire a cig socket on making sure the positive is
centre, while the car is running plug the lib in presto... I have been
doing it with my Lib 50 for years

goto www.fixup.net and look in the cooltips section that will keep
you busy for a while!

Tell me how you go

so what your saying is the lib will run off of 12vdc rather than the 15vdc

Sure there is another way. Take a pocket knife and cut the power cord where
it enters your Lib and hard wire it into your car's dc electrical system.

Works great, I have had mine attached for 3 years and 50,000 miles.
