[LincolnTalk] Lincoln's Historical Scavenger Hunt ends with a bike ride!

2024-11-04 Thread kim bodnar
Thank you and congratulations to all those who completed the Lincoln250's
Historical Scavenger Hunt virtually and in person! We hope you found
Lincoln's 18th century history interesting and informative. While setting
it up was a lot of fun, it did require quite a bit of effort, so we’d like
to extend our gratitude to the following individuals and groups who lent
their support. Thank you to Ian Goh for his incredible padlet skills,
Collette Sizer, Amanda Fargo, Jennifer Glass and Val Fox, Lincoln's
Cemetery Agent. We are also grateful to our historians and authors: Jack
MacLean, Don Hafner, Rick Wiggin and Ron McAdow. Additionally, we are
thankful for the partnership of Historic New England, the Lincoln
Historical Society, Lincoln's Conservation Department, the Bicycle
Pedestrian Advisory Committee and First Parish Church.

With gratitude,
Kim
On behalf of the Lincoln250 Planning Committee

[LincolnTalk] Yellow lab

2024-10-23 Thread kim bodnar
Good morning,
Just coming back from the transfer station and saw a yellow lab with a red
collar walking alone on Deerhaven near the intersection with Horseshoe Ln.
It headed into a resident’s yard quickly so I couldn’t get a look at the
collar. Seems perfectly content to be walking around but maybe someone is
looking for him/her?

Thanks

[LincolnTalk] Lincoln's Historical Scavenger Hunt - additional instructions

2024-09-23 Thread kim bodnar
Hello all,
On behalf of the Lincoln250 Committee, we appreciate those enjoying the
scavenger hunt virtually and "around town". It will be open thru the end
of October. One helpful point of clarification is how to take and post the
selfie. Below find some additional instructions:

   -

Point your camera at the QR for your location and click "padlet"
   -

The padlet will open for that location, hit the plus (+) sign at the
   bottom
   -

You will be taken to a page that says "subject" and at the bottom is a
   camera icon
   -

Tap the camera icon at the bottom to take your selfie
   -

Tap "use photo" and it will upload. Then you can include the answer to
the trivia question in the subject line
   -

   Hit publish

*To begin the scavenger hunt, https://padlet.com/jlrg/Lincoln250
.*

Thanks again!

[LincolnTalk] Reminder: 250th logo submissions due July 4th!

2023-06-22 Thread kim bodnar
Hi Lincoln!
The logo contest is still *open*! Please consider submitting a design to be
used for Lincoln's promotional materials for the 250th anniversary! Need
inspiration.. check out Concord
<https://www.concordma.gov/3098/Concord-2025-Executive-Committee> and
Lexington
<https://www.lexingtonma.gov/838/Semiquincentennial-Commission-Lex250>'s!

*Lincoln250 Logo Contest: Marking Lincoln’s Role in the Events of April
1775*

April 2025 will mark the 250th Anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and
Concord. As included in Donald Hafner’s “The Tales of The Battle Road April
19, 1775” (available at Something Special for $5), "When the alarm went out
on April 19th, the militia and minute men of Lincoln were the first to
arrive in Concord, to aid in defense of American Liberty.” The
recognition of the events along the Battle Road and in the state of
Massachusetts will be the starting point for a year-long series of national
events which will culminate in the celebration of the 250th anniversary of
the signing of the Declaration of Independence in July 2026.

The Lincoln250 Planning Committee, along with community partners and town
committees, is planning multiple historical, educational, and cultural
activities and events that celebrate the stories of the many people
who contributed to the formation of our nation. As we kick off our
planning, one of our first tasks is to develop a logo that will act as the
official emblem of the “Lincoln250” celebration. This logo will be used on
the materials associated with the town events that are organized to mark
the 250th anniversary. We might even use the logo on a celebratory
t-shirt!

*Submission parameters*: Proposed logo should be submitted as a color
rendering of approximately 8” X 10” to allow for easy duplication. The
logo should
be simple and a clearly identifiable image. It would be wonderful to read a
brief description of the idea behind the proposed logo if you are willing
to share.

*Where to send submissions:* The Lincoln250 Planning Committee will be
reviewing the submittals and making the decision on the final logo. We ask
that all submissions be emailed to Kim Bodnar at
kbodnarsel...@lincolntown.org
<https://webmail.lincolntown.org/owa/redir.aspx?C=2sjeLWBRVC361xW39i-WxFBIfn2kJ6L1-qFeS1VkEpvNflPGfGjbCA..&URL=https%3a%2f%2fwebmail.lincolntown.org%2fowa%2fredir.aspx%3fC%3dbjiYV8ADaqv4o17zwYw2FWlLpSjrjhqVzaBUqOxZz_GPpkcuoGfbCA..%26URL%3dmailto%253akbodnarselect%2540lincolntown.org>
 by *July 4, 2023*.

*Submission Understanding:* Submission constitutes the individual’s
agreement to allow the use of the logo and also acknowledges that graphic
renderings of the logo may be used for publicity purposes. It is also
understood that no additional payment, monetary or otherwise, will be given.

Thank you!

Jennifer! At this week's SBC meeting we gave heartfelt thanks to two
departing committee members, Jennifer Glass and Sharon Hobbs. Sharon will
be retiring as the Lincoln School Middle School Principal at the end of
June and last week's SBC meeting was her last. Sharon consistently provided
the important voice of the students, faculty, and staff throughout the
building project. She braved late night meetings, often with her young
daughter in tow, as critical educational based building decisions were
being discussed and debated. Over the past 15 years, she spoke about the
need for a project at many parent meetings, and during construction she
worked quietly behind the scenes to ensure smooth transitions to and from
the temporary classrooms and into the new school facilities. We are so
grateful to have had her expertise and calm leadership guiding us through
the project, and we wish her the best in retirement!Jennifer, a member of
the Select Board, is stepping off the SBC to avoid violating Open Meeting
Law when SBC Vice-Chair, Kim Bodnar, joins the Select Board later this
month. Jennifer’s unwavering dedication to the School Building Project
began nearly 15 years ago when she began her tenure on the School
Committee, and continued through her work with the many committees that
contributed to the successful completion of the school project. Jennifer’s
commitment to engaging residents through an open and transparent process
resulted in countless community discussions, charrettes, public meetings,
presentations, and the dynamic SBC website. As a member of the Outreach
sub-committee, Jennifer helped craft hundreds of engaging and informative
blogs, informing residents about the building project at each step along
the journey. Her SBC meeting minutes are legendary and capture every detail
of discussion and decision. The words “Thank You” hardly seem adequate to
express the level of appreciation we have for Jennifer’s leadership over
the past 15 years but ... thank you!- Kim Bodnar & Gina

[LincolnTalk] Lincoln School Project: Thursday: Friends of Modern Architecture Honors Lincoln School Project Team!

2023-03-12 Thread kim bodnar
*Update: Lincoln School Project*
*Honoring our History, Building Our Future*

*(And the School Building Committee meets this Wednesday! Agenda is here
.)*
*Lincoln's 200th anniversary was in 1954, and this comes from a calendar
published by the Lincoln Bicentennial Committee. The photographer was Henry
Bugbee Kane.*

The Friends of Modern Architecture/Lincoln (FoMA) invites you to a
presentation, panel discussion, and reception celebrating the
revitalization of Lincoln’s Modern school. Lincoln Modern architects
Lawrence B. Anderson and Henry B. Hoover, who designed the original school
buildings beginning in the
1940s, saw the power of Modernism to reimagine how architecture could
assist the school community to think and learn in new and inclusive
ways. With the generous support of the Town, the School Building Committee
and the project architects have again reimagined the transformative power
of architecture. The project team has realized an
ambitious, first-in-the-state net-zero renovation that centers on teachers
and students while preserving Anderson’s and Hoover’s original design
intent of creating close connections to nature and using natural light to
create calm energy throughout the building.

*Please join FoMA in the Learning Commons at the revitalized Lincoln School
for a lively evening of architecture, education, and sustainability on
March 16, 2023, from 6:30-8:00pm. Or join remotely via Zoom webinar

[LincolnTalk] Lincoln School Project: Community Spaces

2023-02-19 Thread kim bodnar
*Update: Lincoln School Project*
*Honoring our History, Building Our Future*

One of the 5 core principles of the school building project was enhancing
the school as a community space. We are in a different phase of Covid, the
building is now in use, and the vision for its potential uses is expanding.
In the past couple of weeks, families gathered in the Dining Commons for
Bingo Night, and the town's Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, & Anti-Racism
Committee (IDEA) used the Learning Commons for a hybrid-format public
forum. We've started to put together a photo gallery
 of the building in
use - send photos to s...@lincnet.org if you have a picture you can share of
your group using the school. We look forward to hearing about new and
creative uses!

*Winding Down*

At some point this year, we, the SBC Outreach team, will publish a final
blog post! We are grateful to the 360+ subscribers to our site, and to many
others who have read our posts over the past (almost) 6 years. As we wind

[LincolnTalk] Lincoln School Project: Battery is included!

*Update: Lincoln School Project*
*Honoring our History, Building Our Future*

Last week, a Tesla battery, which will be tied into the School's system of
solar panels, was installed on the north side of the building. The battery
is a Tesla Megapack 2, rated at 500 kVA. The 2-hour 562 kW battery array
stores 1124 kWh of electricity, which is produced by the solar panels and
stored when not needed for current building operations. The stored power is
released back to the building during periods of peak building usage or
solar panel unavailability.

*Now at the Lincoln Library! *Items from the 1994-1995 school project time
capsules are now on display at the Lincoln Public Library. Stop in to check
them out!

[LincolnTalk] Kim Bodnar running for Select Board

2023-01-05 Thread kim bodnar
Hello Lincoln,
It is with much enthusiasm that I announce my candidacy for the Select
Board for a three-year term beginning in March.

Reflecting on the past five and a half years as vice-chair of the School
Building Committee (SBC), I cherish the time I've spent
building relationships with my fellow committee members and residents in
our community. The many conversations I've had in our community spaces or
just walking the trails together have shaped my understanding of Lincoln's
history and culture, as well as concerns for its future and the challenges
ahead. This process has made me a better listener, collaborator and
communicator. And it's the same dedication and commitment to
inclusiveness, transparency and thoughtful leadership that have
characterized my work on the SBC that I hope to bring to every aspect of my
role on the Select Board.

My family moved to Lincoln over a decade ago. It's when my daughters were
enrolled at preschool at Lincoln Nursery School and kindergarten at the
Lincoln School that we first walked the trails behind the deCordova and
fell in love with Lincoln's natural beauty. It's also when I began to
appreciate the town's commitment to its long-held traditions and core
values, and I recognized the need to contribute to that history of
stewardship. I chose volunteer opportunities that blended my skills of
thoughtful questioning, data analysis and unwavering effort with a strong
sense of teamwork. Over the years, that has included Lincoln School's
Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) Chair, a board member for the Friends of
the Lincoln Library, lead organizer of a community-wide kickball
tournament, and as a contributor of the Citizen's Petition that recently
renamed the Board of Selectmen to the Select Board.

As vice-chair of the SBC, I have spent a great deal of time in front of our
town's many boards and committees. These meetings have given me a
tremendous respect for the exceptional level of volunteerism as well as a
first-hand view into how our town is run and managed by our talented town
staff. And as an SBC Outreach subcommittee member, I did everything I
could to ensure that residents felt engaged with the decision-making
process and informed of progress every step of the way. Our 200+ blog and
LincolnTalk posts, videos, the SBC website, multiple mailings and handouts
are a testament to the level of transparency we tried to achieve. The
skills and expertise gained through a business career in supply chain
management, process engineering, and market development have, without a
doubt, been an asset throughout my many volunteer roles.

Looking ahead, I am eager to share my experiences and knowledge as a
crucial phase of the Community Center building project begins. It is a
humbling process that requires tireless effort but also a tremendous
opportunity to listen and learn from a great cross section of our
residents. The town of Lincoln is also at an interesting crossroads with
respect to the recent housing choice legislation for MBTA communities and
the need for expanded housing options. It is a conversation that requires
full community engagement as we reflect on what we value and decide on what
zoning changes we will support. We are also at an inflection point when
discussing next steps for the revitalization of Lincoln Station,
transportation policy and the work of the Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory
Committee, the Climate Action Plan and diversity and equity initiatives to
name a few. Because these initiatives touch every part of our lives, they
require broad based discussions from residents including those who serve on
our many Town boards and committees. I look forward to contributing to
these efforts and building consensus for the long term benefit of Lincoln.

Also, in the coming weeks (just when it's getting really cold again!), you
will see me at the Transfer Station and in front of Donelan's to meet and
hear from you. In addition to those two locations, I'll look for additional
opportunities to meet in person and discuss what's on your mind. More to
come

Finally, as I announce my candidacy, I would like to express my thanks to
Jonathan Dwyer for his many years of service to the community, including
his six years on the Select Board, and I respectfully ask for your support
at the town election on Monday, March 27th.

Sincerely,
Kim Bodnar

[LincolnTalk] Lincoln School Project: Back to the future....

2022-10-02 Thread kim bodnar
*Update: Lincoln School Project*
*Honoring our History, Building Our Future*

*Where were you in 1995? Were you a student in the Lincoln School? Were
your children in the Lincoln School? Were you teaching or working in the
Lincoln School?*

Before the current project, the Lincoln School was last renovated in 1994.
During the 1994-1995 school year, students and teachers created time
capsules that were designed to be opened in 2020. Covid and construction
altered the timeline a bit, but now it is time for us all to climb into our
time machine and see what our students were thinking about and predicting
for the future!

*The contents of the Time Capsules will be on display at the Ribbon Cutting
ceremony on Friday, October 28th! (details and RSVP information below!)*

*What will we find when we open the envelope?*

*What predictions did the 4th graders make about life in 2020?*

*Ribbon Cutting Ceremony: Friday, October 28, 2022, 1:30 pm in the Lincoln
School Learning Commons*
1:00 pm: Doors open
1:30 pm: Ceremony begins
2:30 pm: Reception in the Dining Commons
3:00 pm: Building tours leave from the Dining Commons
Materials from the Time Capsules will be on display in the Dining Commons
throughout the event.

*Additional tours will be offered on Saturday, October 29th from 9:00 am to
11:00 amTo attend the Ribbon Cutting in person, RSVP

[LincolnTalk] Lincoln School Project: First Impressions

2022-09-18 Thread kim bodnar
*What do the faculty, staff, and students think about being in the
renovated school? Here's what a few of them had to say:*

"I just left the building from unpacking and the school is AMAZING! The
town should be so pleased! The Library, Learning Commons, office spaces,
classroomsI could go on and on. There is an energy in the building and
a true level of excitement. Thank you!"

- Kathy O'Connell, Math Content Specialist (and long time Lincoln educator)

"The natural light is amazing, truly a game changer!" - Bryan Kelly, Grade
3 teacher

"Love the glass walls in my classroom that open to the Hub. It's changed
the way I think about lessons and where students are able to work."

- Matt Reed, Grade 4 teacher

"The Hub spaces give us more space to work other than my classroom!" -
Grade 4 student

"I love my office! It's more spacious and functions how I need the office
to work!" - Secretary

"I like that it's (the school) is big, a lot of space to walk around and
the new playground is not just a field but has a structure and things to
do."

- Grade 4 student

"The cafeteria is really big and the food is great!" Grade 3 student

"The gym floor is rubber instead of wood. It makes your feet feel better
and doesn't hurt as much when you fall!" - Grade 3 student

Wonderful to have PK-8 students all in one physical building!" Gwen
Blumberg - Literacy Content Specialist. "Enjoy being located in a Hub space
office with classrooms all around. Makes collaboration flow more easily
and students see us as all teachers working together." - Alechia Torchia,
special education teacher

[LincolnTalk] Lincoln School Project: Remembering Jim Cunningham

2022-09-11 Thread kim bodnar
Jim Cunningham behind the camera at a Lincoln School project community
forum in 2017.

The School Building Committee joins the Lincoln community in mourning the
loss of Jim Cunningham. Jim was a dedicated volunteer who spent countless
hours filming the community forums, SBC meetings, town meetings, and
special town meetings that were focused on the Lincoln School project. We
relied on his presence over many years to help communicate this complex
process to the Town, and we deeply appreciated the technical knowledge he
brought to bear on renovating the systems in the Auditorium. We are
saddened by his passing and will always remember him as an integral part of
the project and of Lincoln's civic life.

Modular units ready to leave the Lincoln School campus. Photo by Peter von

Remember how excited we were to see the temporary school being built
? We
are now just as thrilled to see it being deconstructed! One by one, the
modular units are being prepared for transport to their new home at the
Nauset Regional High School. It will take a couple of weeks to remove the
temporary school, the concrete footings, and the parking lot. After that,
reconstruction of the field can begin.

Also, at this week's meeting, we learned:

   - Installation of playground equipment will begin soon!
   - The racks that support the PV panels on the roof are being installed.
Work began on top of the Middle School (Reed) Gym and will progress along
   the building.
   - Concrete and paving work continues on the Commons courtyard, main
   entrance, and walkways.
   - Interior finishes are well underway, and final clean-up is starting at
the preK/Kindergarten end of the building.

[LincolnTalk] Lincoln School Project: Project Milestones

*Update: Lincoln School Project*
*Honoring our History, Building Our Future*

Inside the Learning Commons

Although all preK-8 students will be in the renovated school this fall, the
School Building Committee anticipates that big work (installation of PV
panels and connectivity) and small (punch list items) will continue on the
Lincoln School campus for about another year. Here are some major
milestones to watch for:

   - Furniture and equipment for grades K - 4 will move out of the modular
school between June 22 and July 3.
   - The modular units will be removed from campus between July 25 and
   August 12.
   - About 25% of the photovoltaic (PV) panels are expected to arrive soon.
Supply chain issues have slowed down delivery. Installation will begin on
   the Middle School gym.
   - All the PV panels should be installed and on line by next
   spring/summer.

The project team and SBC continue to closely monitor supply chain issues,
schedule, and budget.

[LincolnTalk] Lincoln School Project: What's new?

2022-05-15 Thread kim bodnar
*Update: Lincoln School Project*
*Honoring our History, Building Our Future*

*As Phase 2 of the Lincoln School project takes shape, let's take a look at
some of the new features of the Primary School:*

   - Preschool is moving out of the Hartwell building and into the school!
For the first time, all of our grades, preK - 8, will be together under one
roof. This will give our youngest students access to the gym, music, and
art rooms, and will make it much easier to deliver services such as
occupational and physical therapy. It will also facilitate the transition
   to Kindergarten.
   - The new Media Center (all-new construction) is on the east side of the
   building.
   - The new Learning Commons

will
be a flexible space for school and community events. It can be set up for
presentations, robotics competitions, art shows, science fairs, music
performances, school dances - whatever we can imagine! The Learning Commons
and adjacent Dining Commons will both have access to a large courtyard
   space in
the inner part of the "L" (about where the "Learning Commons" label is
   below)
   - The principals' offices will be centrally located by the new main
   entrance

(larger
pink area in the image below).
   - The 3rd grade wing is all-new construction and will be the youngest
grade to feature a hub space.

A reminder of which parts of the building are being renovated and which
parts are all-new construction:

A lot of work will be happening on Ballfield Road during school vacation
week (April 18-22). Please see Superintendent Becky McFall's message below.

for
the slide deck from this week's meeting.

Dear Lincoln Campus Community,

This week Consigli Construction began work on the road between the Lincoln
School and the K-4 modular building. The asphalt was stripped down to
gravel and more extensive excavation will take place in the next week with
paving over the April vacation week. Please drive carefully in this area
and reduce your speeds on the gravel roadways.

Many thanks to the faculty and staff for working around this additional
challenge and being flexible and supportive of using alternative recess
locations.

Members of Harriet Todd's family were on hand as we celebrated the

[LincolnTalk] Lincoln School Project: Town Meeting on Saturday

2022-03-20 Thread kim bodnar
2022 Candidate Forum: Watch it here:
https://lincolntv.viebit.com/player.php?hash=2Qa8G3yMWgWK

*Town Meeting is on Saturday, March 26 at 9:30am in the Auditorium!*

*Middle School Open House 8:00am - 9:00am: Come see the renovated Middle
School! (no guided tours, the public can wander through the building and
faculty and student docents will be on hand).*

*Town Elections are on Monday, March 28 from 7:30am - 8:00pm in the Middle
School (Reed) Gym!*

*What is Town Meeting? *It's the day when residents come together to vote
on Town and School budgets, capital investments, town bylaws, and citizens'
petitions.

*Who can vote at Town Meeting? **Everyone who is registered to vote in the
Town of Lincoln is a voter at Town Meeting*! If you are a resident but not
a registered voter, you are still welcome to attend. If there is a closely
contested vote, you will be asked to move to a designated area while
counting occurs. The meeting will be livestreamed, and state law requires
in-person voting.

*Will there be votes affecting the school building project? *Yes! There are
three votes that impact the project:

   1. *Article #11: Modular removal and field restoration:* The School
Committee has approved an agreement to sell the modular classrooms to the
Nauset Regional School District for $550,000. From those proceeds the
School Committee is asking for $350,000 to remove the modular school and
restore the field. The work will include dismantling the temporary school,
removing the concrete footers and temporary parking lot, and, finally,
restoring the field. Nauset needs to have the classrooms in place for the
start of school in Fall 2022. While the sale is happening now, the funds
from the proceeds of the $550,000 sale, will not be available for use until
FY2025. This means asking residents to approve Article 11 now in order to
keep our project on schedule. Once the proceeds from the sale of the
modulars are certified, they will be used to reimburse the town.
   2. *Article #10* is the list of projects recommended by the Capital
Planning Committee. The list includes a proposal to reallocate the
remaining $200,000 from the sale of the modulars to replace the building
lighting control system in the Middle School. The Audacy system was chosen
through the bidding process in 2020 and installed as part of Phase 1. It is
a cloud-based system that includes smart outlets, manual controls, and
occupancy sensors throughout the building. In 2021, Audacy’s new parent
company announced that it would discontinue the system and eliminate
product support in 2026 at the latest. In addition, the Audacy components
installed in the Middle School have already proven to be problematic. Our
project team has been a strong advocate for us, and the supplier of the
Audacy system is providing us, free of charge, a replacement Lutron system
that is similar to what is being used in the Hanscom schools. The Lutron
system is now being installed in the Primary School. The $200,000 we are
requesting, along with $135,000 from the project budget, will be used to
remove the Audacy system and install the Lutron system in the Middle School
over the summer. Addressing this issue now will save the Town money when
compared to doing it in the future after the construction project is
   complete.
   3. *Article #24* is sponsored by the Select Board. Before construction
began, as the SBC went through the value engineering process, the town
agreed to utilize money in the Cable Fund to support new cable television
infrastructure in the school. The Cable Fund comes from annual fees paid to
the town by Comcast and Verizon. As a result, it takes votes over the
course of several years to allocate funds to the project.

[LincolnTalk] Lincoln School Project: Town Meeting Preview on Wednesday

2022-03-13 Thread kim bodnar
*Update: Lincoln School Project*
*Honoring our History, Building Our Future*

In case you haven't heard...*TOWN MEETING IS IN THE AUDITORIUM ON SATURDAY,
MARCH 26 (9:30am start)!* We are so excited to see everyone in person in
the renovated Donaldson Auditorium and Harriet Todd Lecture Hall!

We will vote on three school project-related warrant articles this year:

   1. *Lighting Control System Replacement:* The school is equipped with a
system of smart outlets, occupancy sensors, and manual controls. A system
manufactured by Audacy was part of the project bid in 2020, and the system
was installed in the Middle School phase of the project. In 2021, Audacy's
new parent company announced that Audacy would be discontinued and product
support would end in 2026. Additionally, the performance of the installed
system was proving to be problematic. Our lighting supplier has agreed to
provide, free of charge, a new system manufactured by Lutron to replace the
existing system in the Middle School, however we need to pay for
installation. A request for $200,000 is included in *Warrant Article #10*.
The funds will be reimbursed to the town when the modular classrooms are
   sold.
   2. *Removal of Modular Units and Restoration of Center Field:* The
modular classrooms are being sold to another school district for $550,000,
and they will be removed starting in July 2022. After the units are gone,
the concrete footers and the temporary parking lot
    can
be dismantled and field restoration will begin. *Warrant Article
#11* requests
$350,000 for this work. The funds will be reimbursed to the town when the
   modular classrooms are sold.
   3. *Cable Fund Transfer:* *Article #24* asks residents to approve the
transfer of $75,000 from the town's Cable Fund to support cable television
infrastructure in the school. This is the third and final transfer request
   for this purpose.

To learn more about the warrant articles and ask questions, tune in to
Wednesday's SBC meeting at 7:00. The agenda and Zoom link are here
. (We know that the SBC meeting

[LincolnTalk] Lincoln School Project: Here comes the sun (eventually)

2022-02-20 Thread kim bodnar
*Update: Lincoln School Project*
*Honoring our History, Building Our Future*

*SAVE THE DATE: ANNUAL TOWN MEETING SATURDAY, MARCH 26TH - in the renovated
Auditorium!!!*

As the Lincoln School renovation progresses, the project team is planning
for the complicated logistics required to bring it to a close. Four major
pieces of the puzzle are: 1) installation of the photovoltaic (PV) system;
2) removal of the temporary classrooms; 3) field restoration; and 4)
repaving the road and parking lots. Here is what we know:

   - Our 1 megawatt PV system will include rooftop panels and canopies over
both parking lots. There will also be a 500 kilowatt battery storage system.
   - The PV system is being installed by SunPower. The terms of the
contract have been finalized and the rate for solar electricity is locked
in for the next 25 years. Many thanks to our negotiation team!
   - The photo above shows prep work that was completed in the Middle
School parking lot. Work to prepare the Primary School parking lot will
   begin in May.
   - Installation of the PV panels will begin this summer. Supply chain
issues have delayed the receipt of long lead-time equipment, but the *goal
is to have the system fully operational by March 2023.*
   - The School Committee is finalizing an agreement to sell the temporary
classrooms for $550,000; the purchasing district needs them in place by the
start of school in Fall 2022.
   - Removal of the temporary school will begin in July; the temporary
parking lot and concrete footers will need to be removed before playing
field restoration can begin. *Click here
    to see
photos of the installation process we went through starting Summer 2019
   through Spring 2020.*
   - It will take at least 2 growing seasons until the playing fields are
ready for use; *target is Fall 2023.*
   - PV installation, removal of the temp classrooms, and restoration of
the field are being closely coordinated with the final repaving of the
upper portion of the Ballfield Road loop and parking lots. *Reminder:
   the lower portion of the loop will not be repaved as part of the project;
will need to be a future town project.*

[LincolnTalk] Lincoln School Project: Topping off 2021!

2021-12-23 Thread kim bodnar
*Update: Lincoln School Project*
*Honoring our History, Building Our Future*

*On Wednesday, Lincoln School students and faculty celebrated the placement
of the final beam in a "topping off" ceremony. With her permission, we are
sharing Principal Sarah Collmer's letter to parents:*

Dear K-4 Community,

Today we had a "Topping Off Ceremony" to commemorate the final beam being
placed in Phase 2 of the Lincoln School Building Project! Consigli painted
the beam white and all of the K-4 students and staff, as well as the 5th
graders (who weren't at the middle school last year to do the Phase 1
ceremony) added their names so that we will always be a part of the
building's history!

We went outside to watch the crane place the beam in its spot over what
will be the new Learning Commons! It was extremely moving to be together as
a school - something we have not done since before the pandemic; and what a
thrill it was to hear the kids clapping and cheering. Your child will be
coming home with a gift bag from Consigli with a few items to help them
remember this special day.

Thank you to the School Building Committee, Consigli, and the Town of
Lincoln for all of their hard work and commitment to this project. We are
looking forward to returning to the new and renovated Lincoln School in the
fall!

Best,

Sarah

*What a fun way to close out 2021! On behalf of the School Building
Committee, we wish you good health, time to regenerate, and all the best as
we start 2022.*

[LincolnTalk] Lincoln School Project: Beaming up!

2021-12-19 Thread kim bodnar
*Update: Lincoln School Project*
*Honoring our History, Building Our Future*

One supply chain challenge for the Lincoln School project has been steel
delivery. While waiting some extra days for the steel to arrive, our team
from Consigli rearranged the construction schedule to ensure that progress
continued to be made. The good news is that this past week more steel
arrived, including the largest beam in the project! How big? Where is it
going? Take our quiz and check your answers at the bottom of the blog post!

   1. Where is the steel coming from? a) Canada b) China c) Donelan's d)
   Something Special
   2. How long is the biggest beam? a) 102'- 1" b) 600" c) 53'-3" d) 20
   cows + 2 chickens
   3. How much does it weigh? a) 6000 lbs b) 8673 lbs c) 2 tons d) 9535 lbs
   - "the Covid 19"
   4. How high will it be off the floor? a) about the height of an
   Anklyosuarus b) 16'-3" c) 11'-10" d) 20"
   5. Where will the beam be? *Scroll to the bottom of the blog post to
   find out!*

The beam we've been highlighting is in section C of the building. As you've
read prior SBC posts, you've probably come across the letter designations
for each zone of construction. Below is the image that breaks down the
building into sections. Phase 1 (Middle School) was comprised of sections
D, E, F, G, and H. Phase 2 (Primary School) is currently underway, and is
comprised of section A, B, and C. The slide deck from last Wednesday's
meeting can be found here

[LincolnTalk] Lincoln School Project: Making solid progress!

*Honoring our History, Building Our Future*

What was once the barest form of a structure is rapidly becoming a solid
building!

Just a few weeks ago, the Primary School was stripped down to some columns,
concrete block walls, and part of a roof. Now there is new steel framing,
new windows, a fortified roof, and new exterior brick. Work is progressing
from south (near the parking lot) to north (toward the Dining Commons), and
just in the last week steel framing went up for the building that will
house the Administrative offices and classrooms:

[LincolnTalk] Lincoln School Project: At Every Step .....

2021-09-19 Thread kim bodnar
*Update: Lincoln School Project*

*Honoring our History, Building Our Future...We are reminded that the
school project is a complicated renovation. Along the way, lessons have
been learned and are being applied to the second phase of construction.
Here is one highly visible example:When the Middle School was renovated,
the existing exterior walls were preserved in many places. Because we are
super-insulating the school, it was crucial to carefully apply a vapor
barrier on the entire exterior of the building (a.k.a. building envelope).
The project team quickly realized that the condition of the existing walls
did not provide the high-quality surface needed for the vapor barrier to
work properly. After several solutions were explored, the construction team
decided to "parge" the exterior of the Middle School. Essentially, a skim
coat was applied to the entire building envelope to create a smooth
surface. This work required a lot of time and a significant dip into the
project's contingency funds. That is why the exterior of the Primary School
was demolished. New walls will be built incorporating the insulation and
vapor barrier required to meet our sustainability goals. This meant using
some contingency funds up front for the increase in demolition. The result
will provide long-term value to the project. What will it look like in a
year? Looking at the shell and gaping holes in the building, it is hard to
remember what it will look like when it is complete in the Fall of 2022. -
The empty space where the original building was demolished will make way
for the new main entrance, the Learning Commons, a new 3rd-grade classroom
neighborhood, and a new Media Center.- The remaining buildings will be
renovated to hold grades preK-2 and a new centralized Administrative suite

[LincolnTalk] Lincoln School Project: Honoring Our History .. (and this week's meeting is on Tuesday)

2021-09-12 Thread kim bodnar
*Update: Lincoln School Project*
*Honoring our History, Building Our Future*

Honoring Our History…Building Our Future. This statement has been at the
head of every blog post since 2017, but how does it really relate to the
project? Since the beginning of the project, the School Building Committee
(SBC) has collaborated with about a dozen town boards and departments, and
this work has helped to shape a project that serves our educational goals
and advances the town’s commitment to sustainability, while reflecting the
history of the building and the campus.

One of the SBC’s partners throughout the process has been the Lincoln
Historical Commission (LHC). The LHC is the town board that administers
Lincoln’s “Demolition Delay Bylaw” (article XXI of the town’s bylaws
)
which requires every building project that includes demolition to meet with
the LHC to determine 1) whether the structure has historical,
architectural, or cultural significance; and if so, 2) whether the
structure is “preferably preserved.” The LHC worked with the SBC to
understand the architectural significance of the Lincoln School and to
think about how to incorporate that history into the renovation.

To mark the transition from the first phase of the project to the second,
we invited Andrew Glass, chair of the LHC, to write about the ways the
renovated building pays tribute to its innovative history while creating a
learning environment that will serve our students for decades to come.

*The Lincoln School: Smith Building and Brook Building Complexes*

Lincoln residents and architects Lawrence B. Anderson (1906-1994) and Henry
B. Hoover (1902-1989) made significant contributions to Modern architecture
in Lincoln. Dean of the MIT School of Architecture and Urban Planning,
Anderson, with his firm Anderson & Beckwith, designed several buildings for
the Lincoln School campus, including the Smith complex from 1947 through
the early 1950s and the Hartwell building in 1957. Hoover designed more
than three dozen Modern houses and municipal buildings in Lincoln,
including, in 1937, Lincoln’s first Modern house. With his firm Hoover &
Hill, Hoover also designed several buildings for the Lincoln School campus,
including the three Hartwell pods between 1959 and 1964 and the Brooks
complex between 1963 and 1964.

The oldest part of the Lincoln School, the Smith Building complex was one
of the earliest school buildings in the nation to incorporate Modern design
principles. *Architectural Forum *recognized the innovative qualities of
the complex in an August 1950 article, which can be found here
. As noted by the *Architectural
Forum*, these qualities include:

   - The transparency between the interior and exterior of the building
   achieved through the use of continuous bands of fenestration (windows);
   - Careful attention to how daylight enters the building, including
through use of a sunshield between the lower and clerestory windows, which
served to shade the lower windows from low-angle morning sun and reflect
   light up to the interior ceiling through the clerestory;
   - The use of long bar-shaped classroom buildings to create an
encompassing gesture around the Center Field; and
   - The use of acoustical tiles to reduce noise reverberation in the
   classrooms.

Hoover’s Brooks Building complex built on these Modern design
principles. In creating the auditorium, he used innovative acoustical
“clouds” to help direct sound to the back of the theater. Hoover was a
master of integrating the landscape into his designs, which is reflected in
the close connection of each classroom to the exterior and in the creation
of a courtyard in the Brooks Building complex.

For the current project, architectural firms SMMA and EwingCole are
restoring much of the Smith Building complex and all of the Brooks Building
complex, working within the Modern design principles developed by Anderson
and Hoover.

   - Drawing on Anderson’s and Hoover’s legacy of the innovative use of
technologies, the revitalized Lincoln School will be an all-electric, net
zero building. To reduce heat load and solar glare in the classrooms, the
design restores the use of sunshields as pioneered by Anderson. The
filtered light will also reduce the need to rely on artificial lighting
   within classrooms.
   - Interestingly, because in the 1940s the Town chose to build a more
costly gable roof rather than the shed roof proposed by Anderson, the Town
opted not to build the dedicated cafeteria and kitchen that Anderson
recommended. The revitalized School has a dedicated cafeteria and kitchen
for the first time, the design of which draws on Anderson’s legacy of using
continuous bands of fenestration and clerestory windows to create
connections to the outdoors and to

[LincolnTalk] Lincoln School Project: Walk this way ...

2021-07-19 Thread kim bodnar
*Update: Lincoln School Project*
*Honoring our History, Building Our Future*

*Construction Site Safety:* When you visit the campus, you'll see that the
construction site is shifting. At the moment the entire school and both
parking lots are work zones.

   - The *access to Codman Pool* is *via the pathway and bridge behind the
Hartwell pods*. PLEASE use this path, not the parking lot.
   - ONLY the *Hartwell parking lot* and the *lot by the temporary school* *are
   available for pool parking*.
   - There is *NO vehicle access* around the *top of the loop in front of
the school* - the road is being rebuilt.
   - BOTH the *parking lot by the Reed Gym & the parking lot by the Smith
field are closed to public parking*.

*Project Update: *A lot of work is happening simultaneously! A few
highlights:

   - A new construction fence has been installed around the elementary
school. Excavation work will begin shortly.
   - Starting at the end of July, the *original 1948 Smith building will be
demolished* (see photo below) and construction will begin on the new
Learning Commons, 3rd grade wing, and Media Center.
   - In the middle school, *new hydration stations* are being installed,
there are *new railings in the Lecture Hall* (upper half of the
Auditorium), *white boards* are being hung, and many other details are
   being addressed!
   - In the parking lot near the pool, Sun Power, the company that will be
installing all of the *photovoltaic (PV) panels* on the school, has
   started doing prep work.
   - More photos can be found in the July gallery
   .
