Re: [LincolnTalk] Lincoln Digest, Vol 142, Issue 17

2024-05-12 Thread Leslie Turek
Just to add to what Susan said about invasives, the Massachusetts list that
she linked to was created and is updated periodically by a panel of experts
(MA Invasive Plant Advisory Group) that uses a specific list of criteria
that a given species must meet to be placed on the list. The criteria
involve how readily that species can jump from cultivated settings into the
wild, how much of an impact it has on native species, how widespread it is,
etc. If you're really interested, the criteria can be found on page 5 of
this document:
https://massnrc.org/mipag/docs/MIPAG_FINDINGS_FINAL_042005.pdf

Plant people try to limit the word "invasive" to the specific species that
are on this list. An alternative word for fast-spreading plants that are
not officially listed as invasive would be "aggressive", or as Susan and
Robin suggest, "thuggish".

I expect this will get worse once the Route 126 bridge repair gets
underway. Although they will be leaving one lane open, I imagine a lot of
people will look for alternatives and there aren't many choices. Lincoln

Re: [LincolnTalk] Town Meeting Moments

2023-12-20 Thread Leslie Turek
As I recall, that vote wasn't at a town meeting, it was through the voting
process afterward. Where the people voting didn't approve of the design
that was being presented, and perhaps didn't fully understand the
implication that rejecting the design would also reject the state funding.

[LincolnTalk] Free Purple Knight Asparagus Seeds

2023-10-23 Thread Leslie Turek
A friend gave me 100+ Purple Knight asparagus seeds. I already have an
ongoing asparagus bed, so am offering to give these away. You'll have to
wait a few years before the first harvest, but then you'll have asparagus
every spring for a long time. (My bed has been going strong for over10
years now.)

Here's an article about growing asparagus:

Re: [LincolnTalk] HCA, High rent and related issues of roadblocks to homeownership

2023-10-21 Thread Leslie Turek
I don't claim to have any deep understanding of housing prices and
pressures beyond my limited experience. But I seem to remember from my
student and immediately post-student days that living in new construction
was always expensive. I have never lived in any place that was built more
recently than 1972 (and my current condo of that date seems
amazingly modern to me after my long succession of older houses). My
previous house was a cramped little Cape Cod-style brick house built in
1946, and the apartments before that were in even older buildings. If you
wanted a cheap place to live, you always went to the older buildings. It
seems like almost an oxymoron to me to talk about "new" and "affordable"
in the same breath. I guess the problem out here in the suburbs that there
were never any apartment/multi family units constructed back in the day
that have had the time to naturally become old. And how do you make new
construction "affordable" when the cost of materials and labor have soared
so high that it costs a fortune to build anything?

I've found this discussion very interesting, and would be interested to
hear more details about how this whole "affordable" housing arrangement
works. Are affordable units built the same as the market-rate units, but
just artificially kept to lower rents? Or are they built to be smaller, or
with less expensive interior finishes? Is there some subsidy involved? Does
some agency decide who qualifies for affordable units? If it's a
condominium, what happens when a major expense is incurred? Do the
residents of the affordable units pay less than the residents of
market-rate units toward the shared expense? What happens 10 years from
now, 20 years from now? Obviously, I am rather ignorant about this whole
issue, but would like to understand better how it works.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Invasives beyond garlic mustard

2023-10-10 Thread Leslie Turek
What I've learned on the town conservation trail walks.

The conservation dept. focuses on areas where invasives are just starting
to come in, but they don't have enough people power to attack heavily
infested areas.

The conservation dept. is not allowed to use herbicides, not even in the
controlled way you describe, which pretty much makes them fight the battle
with one hand tied behind their backs.

They have started an effort to control Japanese knotweed and are looking
for volunteers to take on a patch.

For more information, I suggest you get on the conservation mailing list.
You can write to Michele Grzenda (grzen...@lincolntown.org) and ask her to

[LincolnTalk] Assabet Co-op Market

2023-07-02 Thread Leslie Turek
I'd like to call your attention to a new community-owned market in Maynard,
the Assabet Co-Op Market, 86 Powder Hill Rd, Maynard, a 16-minute drive
from Lincoln Center. From their web site: "Our mission is to support the
regional food system; strengthen the local economy; promote the well-being
of our members, our community, and the environment; and be a center of
community activity." The market offers a cafe, and a lovely outdoor back
deck overlooking the Assabet River.

Full disclosure: I am one of the 2297 community owners of the Assabet Co-Op
Market.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Erroneous property tax dunning notice

2023-05-22 Thread Leslie Turek
I would like to report that it appears that my tax problem is being
satisfactorily resolved.

I got the following response from Assistant Treasurer/Collector Patric
Brennan

Thank you for reaching out to us regarding your missing payment.

It looks like we missed applying online payments for 4/30 and we will be
applying the payment this morning.

Anytime you have a question regarding payments we are happy to research it.

In addition, I sent a followup message to confirm that the interest and
fees would be reversed and was assured that they would be.

So hopefully any others affected will get the same positive response.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Tourists from France - what should they visit?

An interesting bit of history a French family might be interested in.
There's a plaque on the wall upstairs at the Union Oyster House about the
French king who roomed there when in exile back in the 1790's.

I will recommend the one toy that has held my cat's attention for many

Re: [LincolnTalk] Slack instead of Mailman?

2022-11-19 Thread Leslie Turek
My experience with Google Groups is that you don't need to have a Google
account to send and receive email from a group. To people without Google
accounts, it would seem very much like the current system we have. People
with Google accounts would be able to log into the group to see past
messages. I think it would be fairly easy to switch to Google groups if the
administrators wanted to do so.

Slack, on the other hand, would be a bigger step for people who are used to
email. Younger people often use it in their workplaces, so are familiar
with it, but for older people there's a bit of a learning curve and I think
switching to it would lose a significant part of our current community.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Community Center - Facts Reminder

2022-11-18 Thread Leslie Turek
Yes, Andy, I did read your post all the way through. Thank you very much for
your clarifications. And I very much wish I could come and vote yes, but the
way our town votes are done does disenfranchise those who are unable to vote in
person. (I, unfortunately, will be out of town on the appointed date.)

I have heard promises for an updated senior/community center for all the years
I’ve lived in Lincoln. I voted for the school project with the assurance that
the community center would come next. I am now 76 and losing hope that I will
see it in my lifetime.

Please vote for the planning funds to at least keep the hope alive.

Can anyone tell me if the drought restrictions were extended at the recent
Water Commissioner's meeting? I looked online, but minutes are not posted
yet and I don't see any other notice. .

[LincolnTalk] Cost of electricity

2022-09-22 Thread Leslie Turek
There was an article in the Globe about National Grid and Eversource asking
for rate hikes around 60% next year due to the increased cost of natural
gas. Can someone here speak on the outlook for our town electrical
aggregation program? For those of us who selected the 100% green option,
the cost of natural gas shouldn't have such a big impact, right? I'm
curious to know what to expect.

[LincolnTalk] Question about water restrictions

2022-09-13 Thread Leslie Turek
In reading the "Mandatory Outdoor Water Restrictions" document
downloaded from the town's website, it states, "the Water Department
is required to enforce outdoor water use restrictions from May 1
through September 30."

Does that mean that after September 30 the restrictions are no longer
in effect and we are free to install new plantings and water them as
needed?

I believe Emerald Ash Borer has actually been in Lincoln for a while.
On Conservation Trail walks pre-covid, Tom Gumbart would point out
dead ash trees that were lost to the borer.

[LincolnTalk] New Lyme disease vaccine trial just starting

2022-08-09 Thread Leslie Turek
There's a new Lyme disease vaccine that has been developed by Pfizer and
they are looking for volunteers for a phase 3 clinical trial. They need
people who frequently walk outdoors or who have dogs that might bring in
ticks. I figure that covers a large percentage of Lincoln, so there might
be some potential volunteers out there.

More information about the vaccine here:
https://apnews.com/article/science-health-ticks-73fab8e29f3e2243c2db5bc33b3265e1

More information about volunteering for the trial here:

https://www.valorlymestudy.com/?utm_campaign=digital1_source=continuum_medium=google_content=lyme%20disease%20vaccine=continuumgoogle

What To Expect

You or your child will be randomly assigned to receive the study vaccine or
a placebo (shot with no active ingredient). Neither you nor the study
doctor will know which has been assigned.

This study will last about 30 months (2 and a half years). During this
time, you or your child will have at least 7 in-clinic study visits,
including 4-5 visits with blood draws. Additional blood samples may be
needed if you or your child develop symptoms of Lyme disease.

Over the course of the study, participants will need to report any changes
in their health to the study team.

The study vaccine and study-related procedures will be provided at no cost.
You do not need health insurance to take part in this study.

Research studies are voluntary, and taking part in a research study is a
personal choice. You or your child may leave the study at any time, for any
reason.

It would make sense to allow the one pool that is shared by many people to
stay in operation in preference to individual pools that only serve a

Re: [LincolnTalk] bikes and trails

I could be wrong about this, but doesn't Fresh Pond have a fence that
prevents dogs from actually getting down into the pond or close to the
edge? That might be why they can permit dogs off leash at Fresh Pond.
Flints Pond has no such fence, nor would we want one.

I'm not taking a stand for or against bikes on the trails, but I have to
say this statement made me giggle a bit. According to Tom Gumbart, who used
to lead our conservation walks through Adams Woods, some of the trails
there are depressed below grade because Adams and his friends used to
gallop horses down the narrow trails. The 19th-century equivalent to dirt
bikes? So not sure he would be rolling over in his grave.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Deli Counter Plastic Waste

I got some prepared meals from Verrill Farm yesterday and noticed they seem
to have switched from plastic to some sort of cardboard material for their
takeout containers. Still had plastic tops, and plastic containers for
soups, but it's an improvement.

I also get meals from happy-jars.com, and they use returnable glass jars.

Re: [LincolnTalk] please make me appy!

2022-06-03 Thread Leslie Turek
The two I've been using lately are Seek for plants and Merlin for birds.

Instead of working from a photo, Seek has you move the phone around showing
various views of the plant. What I like about it is that if it isn't sure,
it will tell you the family or genus, but usually doesn't make a guess
about species unless it's pretty sure.

Merlin is from Cornell University. I have been using mainly the feature
that listens to bird songs and tells you what bird it is. It has other
features I haven't explored.

Both are free.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Corrected - Trail Use Proposal - not too late to postpone and impact on walkers and nature

2022-06-01 Thread Leslie Turek
Someone at the open meeting made a good point. The local bike riders want
to have expanded bike trails in order to have a network that would assist
them to commute around town without having to ride on the dangerous narrow
roads. A perfectly reasonable request. But the trails that were designated
in the proposed plan were small dense networks, such as at Mt. Misery, that
really didn't help much to help with that goal. I would like to see a plan
that was specifically focussed on allowing people to travel around town, so
that there would be only one bike-allowed trail through a specific area,
with the rest of the trails reserved for walkers only.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Tulip mystery

2022-04-28 Thread Leslie Turek
I think it's like any other plant; if they're happy where they are, they will
thrive and continue. If they're not happy they will die out. I'd be inclined to
leave them alone and not move them.

Re: [LincolnTalk] New striping on Farrar road

2022-04-10 Thread Leslie Turek
People who are considerate drivers will be considerate drivers with the new
striping. And people who are inconsiderate drivers will probably be
inconsiderate drivers even with the new striping. Might there be a few
people who will be influenced by the striping to take pedestrians and bikes
into account? Perhaps. Not sure how to tell.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Moderator Response: Please Reconsider

2022-04-01 Thread Leslie Turek
"It is a policy that, if you have something you'd like to say to the
moderators, you can send an email directly to us. Posting to the list
means you are not serious, but are looking for a bully pulpit. You're
looking for an audience, not a solution and a reminder of list policies is
all you're going to get."

I feel this is a bit unfair. I venture to guess that many of the people
using this list don't have the slightest idea how to send a message only to
the moderators. I found the address by clicking on the link at the bottom
of your message that says "Change your subscription settings".

That brought me to a page that contained the sentence: "For general
information about the list, including its rules and policies, please visit
lincolntalk.org <http://www.lincolntalk.org/>."

Went to lincolntalk.org and found the address of the moderators (
modera...@lincolntalk.org) and a link to the Rules and Policies:
https://www.lincolntalk.org/rules-and-policies.

So it is all out there, but also not immediately obvious.

Sharing this in case there's anyone else who isn't aware of how to find the
moderators' address and the policies.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Town land along Old County Rd

2022-03-20 Thread Leslie Turek
When I lived in Watertown, we had a terrible problem with people dropping
trash all along the paths alongside the Charles River. Each year, on Earth
Day, one of the local citizen's groups organized trash cleanup parties all
along the river. It was a shame we had to do that, but together, we all
made a difference.

When I moved to Lincoln, I was so pleased that I could walk our beautiful
trails without constantly running across trash. I'm sorry to hear that the
plague has spread to our town as well. Perhaps we need a similar sort of
cleanup day. Although I would much rather spend my time doing something
useful, like pulling up garlic mustard or planting native pollinators,
rather than having to waste time picking up after thoughtless people.

Re: [LincolnTalk] An important question about doggie poop bags (DPBs)

2022-02-15 Thread Leslie Turek
It's rather appalling to me that someone would leave bags of poop anywhere,
especially along someone's driveway. I understand the annoyance factor of
carrying the bags on a long walk, but perhaps they could come equipped with
a fanny pack or something similar to carry it in conveniently? Or do a
short loop for the dog to do its thing before setting out on a longer trail
walk? Many dog owners seem to have found a way to manage this.

[LincolnTalk] New video of Bruno at Wildcat Sanctuary

2022-01-24 Thread Leslie Turek
The Wildcat Sanctuary featured Bruno in their daily sanctuary visit video
today. He's doing great. They say he's bringing in more donations right now
than their big cats - tigers and lions - which are usually the most popular.

I am offering a Panasonic digital phone/answering machine with 3 extra
handsets. Several years old, still works fine, except that the handset
rechargeable batteries could use to be replaced. (Some give out after about 15
minutes on hold.) Manual is available online at link.

[LincolnTalk] ISO Cable TV signal strength meter (loan)

2021-08-24 Thread Leslie Turek

willing to lend a meter that measures cable TV signal strength? I'd just
need it for a day to troubleshoot a problem I am having.

Re: [LincolnTalk] What bird is this?

2021-08-05 Thread Leslie Turek
I hope that’s not the mysterious bird disease that was killing birds to the

Re: [LincolnTalk] Success with Uber? Driver?

2021-08-02 Thread Leslie Turek
As I understand it, calling Uber in advance does not reserve a ride for
you. They just put in your order at the appropriate time and if there are
no cars available, you are stuck.
