RE: lingo-l dual monitor projector?
Hi Tony, I don't have the option to use a Mac for this project, but I will be trying all the options to see what works best on whatever final platform is chosen. Thanks for the offer of help! Cath, Windows has overtaken the Mac's capabilities with 2 monitors already as long as you use XP and a modern dual head graphic card. RE: lingo-l dual monitor projector?
overtaken ? just out of interest: do you care to elaborate, what are the advantages of windows in regards to multiple monitors, other than requiring dual head graphic cards instead of being able to handle two seperate cards properly ? -- Hi Alex! Beeing a Mac fan, this is hard to say: I have been working with 2 graphic cards in a Mac since the Quadra 950 and on Windows since Win98 and today Win XP will work very reliable with 2 or more graphic cards as long as you use cards that fit together. This is the only problem (drivers). Which has always been and still is a main difference between Apple and Wintel computers of course. So at least they are equal to this point, especially using a dual-head card. I had QT-crashes 2 years ago, even that has disappeared. Why I say overtaken is simply, that 1. cards are faster 2. cards are much cheaper (a 49.99 USD will do) 3. There are more settings (like the one huge desktop) 4. At least on my macs I have to reboot or go asleep and wake up to use a freshly connected card. On XP I just activate it, no matter if it was connected at start-up or not. Of course these are just small differences and YES - I hate Windows and love Mac, but these are the facts. RE: lingo-l dual monitor projector?
ah OK I see, I just feared I had missed something. so it are the same reasons, that windows has 'overtaken' mac in general, cheaper hardware, faster and inconsistent. it reminds me a bit of the advantage of being able to eject a CD-ROM, while it is in use... (I always felt uncomfortable with ejecting a mounted volume, without 'telling' the software, but that's just my mac-bonehead for sure ;-) Well not only but for some reasons you are right. Damn Bill! RE: lingo-l dual monitor projector?
I am about to start a project which will use two monitors - one will run video and the other the interface. Has anyone done this? Is the best way to treat the stage as one large stage covering both monitors? Any pitfalls? Advice? Yes, yes, and yes. It may vary depending on which video board you're using (unless it's a Mac, in which case there's no problem). The main thing to know is that some video boards will only fill one monitor if you make the projector Full Screen. The easy solution is to not make it Full Screen, but instead to set the rect of the stage at run time to be across the two monitors. I do not agree in all points. I guess this is not a CD-Rom for sale, is it? It is a special project for a limited, known range of customers. Since almost every modern graphic card can handle two monitors (even the ATI SE series) I would recommend to run the stage on monitor 1 and a MIAW in monitor 2. You can easily determine it's size with the desktoprectlist. I have been doing this for 10 years on the Mac and for 4 years on the PC even with 4 outputs. Best regards, Florian [To remove yourself from this list, or to change to digest mode, go to http://www.penworks.com/lingo-l.cgi To post messages to the list, email [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Problems, email [EMAIL PROTECTED]). RE: lingo-l dual monitor projector?
If you're just going to show video on the second monitor, then a MIAW might well work. If any graphics need to span or move between the two areas, having the stage fill both screens is very convenient. But the thread was about having a controller on one monitor and the output on the second, right. Of course you can not move objects between 2 miaws but animations, movies etc. run pretty well on the 2nd monitor! RE: lingo-l dual monitor projector?
I may have missed that part. The ones I've done have had a touch screen for the first display, and additional graphics or video shown on the second display. Having scripts in the first monitor area that send messages or talk directly with sprites that are on the stage in the second monitor area, is a bit simpler than communicating with a MIAW. Also there's more peace of mind about whether the video sprites are getting their fair share of the processor time. Sure good arguments. I usually play several (changing) director movies in the second monitor so I never had a real choice. After all LDMs were too buggy. noelle cheng wrote: Hi, Thanks Florian and Tab for helping to solve my problem. Sorry, Florian for not replying earlier. I think Tab explained very good what to do. Also be sure to include the script member scriptb in your movie. Yes, Tab did explain it very well. In fact he hit the nail on the head. As I has copied the contents from another file, there were now actually two 'start movie' scripts. Wow, you are all very good at debugging scripts. You were able to pinpoint my mistakes very quickly. Anyway, after I corrected this, I ran the movie again and the error message was : Error: cast member not found. I think I can't do anything anymore. Thank you for helping me learn. Yes, I spent hours on it but I believe that it was worth the trouble. First thing I've learnt is that I must never copy code blindly. There will definitely be errors. Something more general Noelle: what is it you want to do? No offense meant, but you seem to be a very beginner with Director and Programming. It might not be the best idea to use quite complicated object orientated scripting. We all gladly help, but using more simple lingo might do a better job for you to learn lingo. Thank you for your concern. To be honest, I was trying to create a quiz in my .dir movie. I wanted to create something nice instead of using PS and embed everything in the score to do it. I wanted it to be interactive. But my knowledge of lingo is very very limited. Initially, Irv was kind enough to send me his file. I studied it and tried to modify and fit it into my movie. No, the debugger didn't appear when I ran the movie. Instead the tempo was all wrong and the scenes were not smooth. The sequencing of events was wrong. Well, I couldn't very well ask Irv what he put inside his movie, now, could I? It was very embarrassing. Then I was very fortunate to receive another quiz .dir file. But this time I made the mistake of not testing it by saving it after copying it in. It worked after I copied it in. If I had saved it and ran it, I would have known of the errors then . But I didn't do so. This is another lesson learnt. After I saved it I do not run it but immediately started modifying the questions etc - after all it was something like a 'generic file'. Only after I tried to run this file did the errors come out. Well, it was in a way better than Irv's so I immediately started using the debugger. The same thing with the volume control script. I still can't make it work properly. But I am not giving up. I still want to try. I'm sorry. I know that this is definitely not the way to learn lingo. And I wouldn't have said anything if you hadn't asked me. I'm very afraid that I may be wasting your time. No no, don't get me wrong. You don't waste our time and feel free to ask whenever, whatever and we are glad if we can help you. Understand my former posting as a try to help you too please. And there is no one way to learn lingo. Everybody learns different and I have learned a lof from reading and modifying others scripts, but maybe you should start with easier scripts. Again: go get Advanced Lingo for Gamers for the quiz. It also explains where and what to change to build your own quiz. May I ask a question? Is math required for lingo? Not necessarily, unless you do complicates vector and 3d stuff In the university, I only studied statistics. But I studied some general math during my 'A' levels. Is this still too little? There is such a line but it is in another script in the same movie. There is goMulti in this script too. But it was not in the list of handlers that was in the left of the debugger list that Warren described. Anyway, here is the script. global goMulti on startMovie goMulti = new(script scriptb) goMulti.mInit(#multi) member(score).text = 0 end startMovie How do I make this handler execute at run-time? I have tried compiling and recompiling the script. I also set the breakpoint at this line in goMulti = new(script scriptb). Instead it brings me back to the other script where the error is (where the variable is void). Every line executes. What do I do with this script? But what I have done seems to tell me that the script is executing at run- time. I can't seem to find anything wrong with this movie script. I also checked the member(score).text and it is set to zero. When is a behavior written as such not a behavior? I may safely assume when it is not executed at runtime? The other handler mentioned was onMousedown. I studied Irv's debugger movie and there was a similar error: on mouseUp ShowTime() end His debugger showed the on Mouseup handler as well and he stated that his variables had not been defined. But in this case, my variables have been defined. And all the handlers are in place. Or am I still not understanding something? Something like on alertHook meerrorComingFrom deleteOne (the actorlist, errorComingFrom) end I think you know what i mean. best regards, Florian [To remove yourself from this list, or to change to digest mode, go to http://www.penworks.com/lingo-l.cgi To post messages to the list, email [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Problems, email [EMAIL PROTECTED]).
