Re: lingo-l list uses

2001-06-13 Thread faisal moro

Tyler,

you can actually use lists for almost 1000 things.
If i understood your question, you need to create a tile based map,
and make your boat moving within.
Of course lists are grat for this.
I'm working in these days to a similar project, and i'm developing a
map engine that may be similar to the one you need.
It's based on Objects rather than on the score/sprites approach.
I try to explain you what steps to consider in creating such a thing.

1 - a map consists in coordinates that you can store as points into a list.
2 - besides, you have a number of horizontal rows, and a number of
vertical rows.
3 - tiles originates by such an environment have a width and a height.
4 - could happen that some tiles are not empty, so they contain
obstacles, enemies, bonus points, other boats, and whatever you want.
5 - when your boat has to move, it has to look for a direction in the map.

These are the basic aspects to consider i think: well they're the
ones i considered at the first time, others came after a while :-)

HopeThisHelps.

I was reading my Director 7 Demystified book about Lists, and I
wondered if I could use lists to solve another of my problems... I
have a grid, 20x20, that I want to have a sprite navigate around --
in fact, the sprite is a boat. Can I use a list to keep track of
what grid squares are land and what are water, and use that
information to create a path for the boat to follow (so that the
boat does not drive across land)?

the good thing is that the better you know one language the more you can talk another,

well said!

...whereas i'm from Toronto, Canada, and i have noticed a sharp downward
trend in jobs that demand knowledge of Director and Lingo. at the same
time, there is a steady rise in the number of people who are interested in
such a career. i teach at a local design and technology college, partly
because it's good experience, partly because it lets me use cutting edge
technology, but mostly because i can't find studio work.

i have worked for sae technolgy college london for quite some time as head of the
multimedia department so i can relate very much to what you are saying about students,
etc.
and/but a lot of the colleges do miss the point slightly as they try to satisfy the
need for students to learn a new piece of software without sufficiently making them
aware that it may not be the 'right 'one fro all applications. the students are then
too focused/polarised for their one good

as i mentioned at the beginning of this email: yes. in fact, one of my
fellow teachers keeps going on and on about how CD-ROMs (as a software
platform) are *dead*, and how so many companies in Toronto haven't done a
CD-ROM in years, and how it will be another 5 years at most before CD-ROMs
(and DVD-ROMs) disappear completely, and the whole world turns into one
 great, giant spiderWeb.

i don't think so actually. cd-roms may be succeeded by dvd-roms evenually (maybe not
so far in the future, - but maybe i am too old to make qwuick rpedictions for this
industry..?). one thing i do feel very strongly is that most clients/companies who
have a cd-rom done in director hugely 'underuse' directors capabilities. (why only
churn out a beefed up slide-show or put your web site onto a cd-rom if you have all
the power of director at your disposal? -or is it that there are in fact too few
people around who can use director properly and efficiently, and the ones who end up
doing the cds would make a really good cd a long and expensive ventuer (by basically
having to learn on the job [not that we all do that anyway..]).

i haven't tried Director 8.5, because i'm wondering if it's worth it at
all. shrug my thoughts are that i should skip it altogether and change my
allegiance to Flash (which, by the way, i do NOT want to do).

i think that the two things that will keep director afloat and going in the future are:
the 3d thing and shockwave on one hand. director seems to be the only decent
authoring tool for 3d on the web at the moment(is there any other comparable one?) and
authrign for dvds. because of my past as an audio engineer i am naturally
interested in any audio disk techhnolgy and thereforem currently looking into
dvd-audio as well as -video) and it seems that with all the back catalogue the content
providers have of music and film, there is a huge amount director could and should
snap up! this may not be the most interesting work, but then again live is what
you make it!

honestly, though, unless someone can refute the five-year death of
CD-ROMs, i'm seriously considering leaving this field.

hey - stick with it!

maybe i should go
back to IT... there's *tonnes* of IT work in Toronto these days. :P

One quick question to you all. Q: As i was working on a project yesterday, i
suddenly found
i had no keyframes appearing in my score when dropping a cast member onto
it,
then suddenly all my cast members caught the bug - and now - no keyframes
anywhere.
It's now another day still no keyframes, i was hoping it was just a
temporary glitch yesterday, but to my
my problem still haunts me..

Has anyone else had this problem, how did you overcome it!!??!!

Is this something i have done?

My appreciation in advance...

to cover both authoring runtime modes I have found that this works well.
use this code as a behavior on your Exit button:

 on mouseUp me

  smartQuit

 end

then place this code as a movie script in your movie:

 on smartQuit

  if the runMode Author then
   QUIT

the reason for the distinction is that QUIT will cause the Director
authoring environment to close, which is not what you want when testing.

For historical reasons. Quit was in Lingo from the beginning. But
people complained that executing quit when running in Director also
quit Director. So, Macromedia, (being the nice folks that they are
and not wanting to break any existing application where you might
want the existing functionality), introduced the new keyword halt
which does what developers really wanted.

Well, if I recall correctly, quit was always there, but took you all the
way out. Halt used to originally literally halt the work, and the bug (at
least back in v4), or feature, was that it just stopped everything, and
didn't call stopMovie. Over the years, somewhere, it got to where it would
also call stopMovie, and now they're basically the same, the only
difference that quit throws you out of Director entirely and halt
doesn't. As far as I'm concerned, quit is useless, now that we have halt.

Of course, my favorite is 'shutdown', but that's another story... :)

there.
Could anybody help me to solve this problem.

Thanks so lot!

RE: lingo-l how can I exit the movie?

2001-06-13 Thread Irv Kalb

But Al, there is no need to do this extra work. As Tab pointed out,
the beauty of halt is that it does this check for you. At
author-time, halt will just stop the movie and keep you in Director.
At execution-time, it will quit the executable. I've been using it
for years this way.

Actually, a better way out is to use 'halt'.

In authoring mode (that is, in Director), quit will also exit
  Director,

  movie will just stop.

to cover both authoring runtime modes I have found that this works well.
use this code as a behavior on your Exit button:

  on mouseUp me

   smartQuit

  end

then place this code as a movie script in your movie:

  on smartQuit

   if the runMode Author then
QUIT
   else
HALT
   end if

  end

not sure what you trying to do, see no way what you doing can work.

the currentSpriteNum is the number of the channel where a script is running

frame and movie scripts return 0
put the currentSpriteNum

so every time you enter the frame, you make aRecord = 0
this is pointless.

easy way.
make aRecord global variable.
set it on mouseDown.
check it with other script and do whatever

RE: lingo-l Cheking if a .dll file is in windows system

2001-06-13 Thread Tab Julius

Then you could use the FileIO Xtra (which comes with Director) to get the
windows folder, via the getOSDirectory() call. You could append on to get
the system folder (generally the system folder is under the main Windows
directory, but it doesn't have to be, or it could be something other than
system, or the drivers could be in a subfolder), but once you know where
you want to look, you can then use either the Lingo
getNthFileNameInFolder() to iterate through the files looking for the one
you want, or you could use FileIO to open it up for reading and see if you
have an error or not (don't forget to close it!).

It's not 100% effective - you may prefer BuddyAPI or something that can
find the system folder for you (presuming that's where the drivers are).

Re: lingo-l Big Problem

buddy api xtras error is as below
error message is : you have exceeded the number of licensed functions)

That one is easy--you need to register Buddy API. You can use 2 Buddy
functions for free, but beyond that, you have to register (and pay :-)

You can register two ways--at runtime, with a Buddy call, or you can simply
register your copy of Buddy using the directions that came with it (you did
read the instructions, didn't you?)

how can i remove this error please help me.

The rest of the issues you describe tell me you have numerous problems. We
can only guess, based on the information you gave us, what they might be.

I almost never say this, and please don't take it wrong, but you need more
help than we can give you on the List, Mitesh. The questions you ask and
the problems you describe lead me to believe that you don't understand some
very basic Director concepts, and some very basic programming concepts. You
need to look on us as a source of help on specific problems, not as a
vehicle for learning Director.

I would recommend you take a course on Director, read some books, and make
sure you understand the basic concepts. When you have specific questions,
we're more than happy to help. Unfortunately, help my program is crashing
doesn't give us much to go on.

Don't go away--you're welcome here. But please try to post more specific
questions.

Cordially,

Kerry Thompson

namaste,

As Mr. Fiskeaux says, unless you have a compelling reason otherwise, the
thing to do is to embed the fonts in the director movie. then you don't
have to install the fonts on the system, you don't have to worry about
which fonts are on the system.
you still have to test cross-platform, of course, but i find embedded
fonts to be pretty reliable.

I had a similar problem recently and found some examples but they were
rather cumbersome so I came up with the following simple but effective
solution to use an adjustable field. I also added a separate behaviour to
hilight the text at the mouse position. As this is the first time I have
felt able to give some help back for all the help I have had from the list
someone will probably have a much better solution and may think this is a
bit crude but it is simple and it worked for me so I hope it is of use to
someone.

global selectedItem
property pLine
property pClicked
on mouseenter me
  pClicked = your default text
member(field for dropdown).text = -- make sure boxtype is set to
adjust
  member(field for dropdown).text = member(list to display as dropdown
items).text
  selectedItem = pClicked
end

on mouseleave me
  member(field for dropdown).text = pClicked
end

on mouseUp me
pline = pointtoline(sprite(the clickon), the mouseloc)
  pClicked = member(sprite(the clickon).membernum).line[pline]
  member(field for dropdown).text = pClicked
  selectedItem = pClicked
end
