 Hi there,
I wonder if anyone can help, I am building a training movie which is run
from a CD , however I was wondering is there any way that I can have the
user make notes while the Movies are playing and later refer to them from
within the movie environment. I was thinking of some sort of text file
that
is saved on the users hard drive and is available for reading and
amending
whenever the movie is playing. This would be an alternative to the user
making hardcopy notes.
Hi Leah, many thanks for your quick response to my question. You are of
course correct about the Prefs item but the only example I can find using
this is not very user friendly, that is to say the adding of files is too
scrappy and a bit hit or miss. I have tried to find another example but to
no avail. I have however found an example using FileIO at the Macromedia
website which looks and feels more the way I want but unfortunately the text
file is stored in the same directory as the movie which is no good as the
movies are running from CD. The line causing me grief is

filePath = the moviePath My Notes

is there anyway that I can save the file to a folder outside of the movie on
the users hard drive. Also if anyone has an example of this and could either
email me or point me in the direction of an example I would be eternally
grateful, ideally I would like a box where text can be entered or deleted
with a simple open and close dialogue box. I am a bit of an idiot when it
comes to this kind of thing and unless I can see the thing working I find it
really hard to grasp so a quick explanation goes right over my head. When
working I can then adapt things to suit me.

In anticipation of your answers
Many thanks

Ron,

There are several ways to save data in a text file on any writeable drive.
Look inty File IO Xtra that comes with Director, or a third party Xtra like
FileXtra. A good place to start is:

I amworking with the PDF Xtra on a project that involves a little search engine for
the PDF files (ca 30). The search results are to be displayed in a small pop up window
(miaw) but:

after appearing briefly on top of my full screen main movie (the one that also
displays the PDF files) it disappears into the backgrund behind the man movie as soon
as the pdf is loaded by the pdf xtra.

Normally pop up windows tend to stay in front of the main window and look like an
inactive window, but with the pdf xtra they are pushed into the background.

Can this be changed, or over-ridden somehow? Does anyone have any experience with that?

Many thanks,

Try the behaviors that ship with director.

Look under Window-Library palette.

Lot's of basic interactivity stuff there.

Try going through the tutorials if you don't know where to start.

Natalia,

I have had the same problem and I had to resort to putting the quicktime
files in the same directory as the projector. It is a bit messy but worked.
To be safe I also changed the path name in the cast member properties
dialogue box to @theMovie.mov from its original path name so instead of the
link reading c//my documents/myproject/theMovie.mov it just read
@theMovie.mov. That seemed to do the trick. Good luck.

Hi to all

I'm quite new in lingo and I have a ,probably for you all, simple question.
I have a main movie and a miaw that share the same external cast. The
problem is that this cast is very big and when I open the miaw the first
time it takes a lot for loading that cast. The other problem is that when I
change the color of some word, in the miaw it works and in the main movie it
doesn't. I was wonderingif there is the possibility of managing the cast
without having to include it in the dir file. I have done a test but the
castmember seem to be manageable only if I insert the cast in the MIAW.

I'm using Director 7.

For changing the color of text i use this lingo :

On change_color Member, NumWord

member(Member).word[NumWord].color = rgb(225, 0, 0)
member(Member).word[NumWord].fontStyle = [#bold]

End Change

Someone could help me.
Thanks in advance

...whereas i'm from Toronto, Canada, and i have noticed a sharp downward
trend in jobs that demand knowledge of Director and Lingo. at the same
time, there is a steady rise in the number of people who are interested in
such a career. i teach at a local design and technology college, partly
because it's good experience, partly because it lets me use cutting edge
technology, but mostly because i can't find studio work.

i have worked for sae technolgy college london for quite some time as head of the
multimedia department so i can relate very much to what you are saying about students,
etc.
and/but a lot of the colleges do miss the point slightly as they try to satisfy the
need for students to learn a new piece of software without sufficiently making them
aware that it may not be the 'right 'one fro all applications. the students are then
too focused/polarised for their one good

as i mentioned at the beginning of this email: yes. in fact, one of my
fellow teachers keeps going on and on about how CD-ROMs (as a software
platform) are *dead*, and how so many companies in Toronto haven't done a
CD-ROM in years, and how it will be another 5 years at most before CD-ROMs
(and DVD-ROMs) disappear completely, and the whole world turns into one
 great, giant spiderWeb.

i don't think so actually. cd-roms may be succeeded by dvd-roms evenually (maybe not
so far in the future, - but maybe i am too old to make qwuick rpedictions for this
industry..?). one thing i do feel very strongly is that most clients/companies who
have a cd-rom done in director hugely 'underuse' directors capabilities. (why only
churn out a beefed up slide-show or put your web site onto a cd-rom if you have all
the power of director at your disposal? -or is it that there are in fact too few
people around who can use director properly and efficiently, and the ones who end up
doing the cds would make a really good cd a long and expensive ventuer (by basically
having to learn on the job [not that we all do that anyway..]).

i haven't tried Director 8.5, because i'm wondering if it's worth it at
all. shrug my thoughts are that i should skip it altogether and change my
allegiance to Flash (which, by the way, i do NOT want to do).

i think that the two things that will keep director afloat and going in the future are:
the 3d thing and shockwave on one hand. director seems to be the only decent
authoring tool for 3d on the web at the moment(is there any other comparable one?) and
authrign for dvds. because of my past as an audio engineer i am naturally
interested in any audio disk techhnolgy and thereforem currently looking into
dvd-audio as well as -video) and it seems that with all the back catalogue the content
providers have of music and film, there is a huge amount director could and should
snap up! this may not be the most interesting work, but then again live is what
you make it!

honestly, though, unless someone can refute the five-year death of
CD-ROMs, i'm seriously considering leaving this field.

hey - stick with it!
cheers
nik!

maybe i should go
back to IT... there's *tonnes* of IT work in Toronto these days. :P

seem to be more keen to get their assets moved into

this led to developing applications like chat in

Yea, they used to say that about paper too. Your coworker is arrogant to
suggest he knows the absolute future of multimedia. If you are concerned
about declining demand for multimedia CDs, I suggest you try to research
production levels at CD replication plants.

Director skills will not become useless anytime soon, but it wouldn't hurt
to become proficient in Flash and PHP or CF too.

Folks...

I'm also a huge Lingo/Director fan and am not elated about the idea of
eventually having to go to Flash/ActionScript. I do have
some other tools in my kit so with some luck I'll never be
out of a job.

But here's something I've used Lingo for that you may not have
considered. Sure, I've done plenty of multimedia stuff...but
Director/Lingo is a great Rapid Application Development tool,
especially if you have a bunch of cool Xtras or can roll your
own if required. I've built a number of general utility type
software (some relatively ambitious) including some media production
type software. Just one more way to mke use of your Lingo skills.

Me, I know I said I'm not to keen on the idea of learning the
Flash/ActionScript...
but actually, I lied...I think I don't mind the changing world we live in.

As my drill sergeant used to say...SON...DISPLAY SOME ADAPTABILITY!! :-)

Hi I do not know whether this will do it for you, but I'll quote myself as I
originally sent my reply to nik offlist:
QUOTE
(Was not sure whether to respond personally or on-list... Went safe.)

Yes. The multimedia Hype is definately over. Most Clients do not have the
money to spare for using Multimedia as Eye candy, now that the functional
sides of the web are finally taking form. Also I have locally (finland) been
observing another trend. The companies are shifting their assets into the
web, meaning, that if your company has intrest in continuing multimedia
Development they should do so, because eventhough the general demand seems
far less:
1# It is not (Comparatively it is, in absolute terms it is not)
2# The competition is fading
Meaning, that any company with real intrest in making money with Multimedia
definately can do so.

Also, please bear in mind, that multimedia, or the proficiency to produce it
is, in the end, not a technical ability, more a mindset. E.g. my long
experience in creating multimedia enables me to create multimedia, no matter
what the technology.
More explicitly, A graphic artist who has learned Flash, will still be far
less able to create multimedia then a 'multimedian' who learns Flash.

Also another thing which I have come to learn since multimedia's honeymoon
is over: You have to be cost efficient, and you have to be able to give
features which you have previously dreaded to implement. That does not have
to lessen the graphis shabang of any product, it just means that everyone
needs to start considering things like limited Databases, mediadatabases. It
means, that you can't allow yourself to be doing a whole new product every
time and hand(/hard)code everything.

Hi list
Have a couple of problems really bugging me at the moment if anyone can
help.

1. Is it possible to use lingo to control the keyboard cursor such as
determine which field it is in and even which line of a field, or send it to
the next field if it reaches a certain line number. I can only find info on
the mouse cursor.

2. Is it possible to sort a property list by values rather than property.

3. I need help creating a routine that compares two scores from different
lines of a field and stores the lowest value in a list along with its team
name taken from the corresponding line of another field. So one field
contains team names each repeated twice and no specific order while the
other field contains all the scores.

Sorry I have no example code but what I tried caused a fatal error and I
lost it.

Hope this is not too vague and someone can help.

I have tried importFileInto, setting the filename of member, etc. Importing
it has been no problem, however, the rect of the sprite I imported (a dummy
text sprite) it into is changed. I cannot seem to set the rect of this
sprite, or its member. In addition, if I load it into an set the text of
member to the new file, It loses its html formatting. How do I swap in a
new html member with formatting intact?

Thanks in advance, I am on the digest.

I am having a problem with the scripting for a game.
There are three lingo handlers on the stage; 1) for the
movement of an object which is attached to the mouse, 2)
an object is moved across the bottom of the screen, 3)
causes an object to fall (-y direction) from the object
attached to handler #1.

The problem is that handler #2 is executing, handler #3
will not execute. Handler #3 is triggered by a mouse
click and works in the Projector until handler #2 is
finished executing. Handler #2 is executed by a timer
but I do not believe that to be the problem.

I am wondering if there has been any porblems with
multiple handlers executing in Director Projectors or if
I am simply going about scripting this in the wrong
fashion?

Thanks,

If Lingo itself can't unlock it then I believe the "MultiMixer" Xtra can.

The qt3 Xtra has a global function for locking and unlocking codecs.

* QTRegisterAccessKey string category, string key -- registers an

* QTUnregisterAccessKey string category, string key -- unregisters an

Never tried it though.

2001-03-14 Thread Nicolaetiberius

Hi,

Trying to make use of Flash navigation because of the file size.
I have 2 flash buttons which opens 2 diferent miaws with Direct Media files.
My flash video controls buttons works fine.
The only problem I have is communicating back and forth from the Miaw to the
stage and viceversa.

Here are my scripts, maybe someone spots my mistakes:

global gWinbaa
global gWinliverpool
on preparemovie
  gWinbaa=window("baa1")
  gWinliverpool=window("liverpool")
  put the windowList
  end

global gWinbaa
on video1
  gWinbaa.filename="baa1"
  put the windowList
  gWinbaa=window"baa1"
set offsetX = the left of the rect of the stage
set offsetY = the top of the rect of the stage
set myLeft = the left of sprite 12
set myTop = the top of sprite 12
set myRight = the right of sprite 12
set myBottom = the bottom of sprite 12
set the rect of gWinbaa= rect(offsetX + myLeft, offsetY + myTop, offsetX +
myRight, offsetY + myBottom)
  gWinbaa.WindowType=member("winmask")
  gWinbaa.open()
end

Now, my baa1 window opens fine, is maked by the bitmap but is not active. The
video is not playing, the buttons don't function. And very strange, if I take
gWinbaa.WindowType=member("winmask") out it works, so wathever kind of window
type I set it does not work.

Another issue is my "close window "button. Is a flash button with:
on release
getUrl:"lingo:tell the stage to forget window"baa1""
is working, but sometime, on some machines, it brings up the Windows Error:
"This program has performed an iligal operation and will shut down".

Also I want to make sure that if the frame number is= 20 or =15 all the
miaws are closed. A very strange thing the close command only sends my Miaws
to the back and it seems that if WindowActive is not working
I feel like giving up, spent ours online trying to work it out, but nothing.
Maybe I just don't understand the obvious.
Any ideas?

Thanks a lot,
Nicolae

Hey Friends,

Thanks for all your help in the past.
I've got another one for you. I have a picture on my stage(a bitmap), and
I have a circle. I want the circle to be a magnifying glass, so where ever
I drag it, the picture looks bigger, but only in the circle.
There you go, does anyone know how to make a working magnifying glass, that
can be moved around in a movie.
Again thanks for all your help.

P.S. I know how to move it, I just need to know how to make the magnifying
effect.

They should all be in there, unless you used something specific to the
Mac. Generally just open in pc and create the new one.

If you had any custom or third-party Xtras for the Mac, you'd need to get
the same ones for the PC.

If you just used a basic graphics and such, you should be fine.

Hi

The dir file itself is crossplatform, its the executable that is OS
specific. For instance, you will see requests from time to time from people
looking for OS specific stubs (stub projectors) that can be used to
theoretically launch the project. By using Stubs on both a PC and a Mac and
designing your project to work with such, you can easily check crossplatform
functionality without having to constantly recreate the executable.

Sincerely

The dxr files are protected Director files. The purpose for protecting them
is to prevent others from doing exactly what you're asking - reverse
engineering their project. I'm sure your clients wouldn't want their names
associated with reverse engineering or piracy.

You could try to contact the original author see if he will provide you
with the original source files. If this happened within your own company
then I hope it wasn't a great loss. Let it be a lesson in making
multiple-version backups to prevent this from happening in the future.

I have director 8 shockwave version at home, but at uni we only have

Hmm... didn't we get this twice yesterday also?

The answer, Fuzz, is that you can't get there from here. You cannot open
Director 8 files in Director 7. Doesn't matter if it's the educational
version. Sorry.

By the way, it's nice if you put a descriptive topic on your e-mails. It
helps us keep track of threads, and makes it more likely that you will get

 Subject: lingo-l avi to mpeg

 hi list
i want to convert my avi's to mpeg. i tried quicktime pro but every time i
get the error "insufficient memory available", no matter how much space i
create in my hard disk. do anybody know of a software or plugin which is
free and downloadable from net that can convert my avi to mpeg and reduce
the MBs to be used in my director project. i do not have any hardware
support for creating mpegs et all. coz i have heard that u need mpeg card
for this. but i beleive there must be some software through which u can
create ur mpegs without any card etc.
 thanx in advance
If you have QuickTime PRO you can use the Sorensen codec:
1. data rates are usually not higher than MPEG-1 for oproximately the
same quality.
2. you can have other video sizes than 320x240 which is the standard
MPEG-1 size.
3. using Quicktime in Director is easyer than MPEG-1 if you don't have
money for and Xtra that you wil need to play MPEG-1.

Think in terms of your end product before you decide on a video codec.
Once a codec is used and you do not have the original video any more you
can not re-code without severe los of quality.
Hope this helps.

 My Original Message
I'm looking for some feedback on the 'most' accurate consistant
method of playing a click sound at a set tempo for a metronome style
 application.

(2nd post - not sure the first made it)

Thanks to all who helped me with the timing lingo a couple of weeks back. In
particular, the advice from James Newton was very helpful.

In summary, it seems that the best 'Non-xtra' way of accomplishing a
reasonably accurate metronome style application is to use the milliseconds
in a tight repeat loop. I have my application up and running and it is
working very well.

Check out the post from James under 'Timing and Sound' - Fri 03-Nov, if you
want see more details.
