I haven't done it on Linux (yet) but on Windows I always put ;. in the PATH so that it would always search the current path when I issued a command - perhaps if I wasn't so fixated on the command line that wouldn't have been an issue. SLES suse_register fails ?
I've a challenge that I'm hoping someone here can assist with. I've a server that failed to connect to the Novell center for updates. I checked the novell center and it hadn't connected for over a year (I was able to connect 4 months ago to do the SLES 10 sp2 to sp3 upgrade so I don't know what the last contact date really means). Last week I checked YaST Online Updates and it would not connect. I called the novell customer resolution center who suggested removing the server from the novell center and then running suse_register again. I did that with no luck. They then suggested following the guidelines in TID 3303599, which basically says to delete all of the zmd files related to the registration. I did that with no luck either. (Note I had another server with a similar issue and the TID steps resolved things there). Has anyone any recommendations to resolve this as I need to connect to do a YaST Online Update to get the latest kernel update. Thanks in Advance Lionel Lionel B. Sample REXX with cmsfs usage

One Less Systems Programmer (farewell)
It is with a great deal of sadness coupled with excitement at the coming challenges that I have to say farewell to the world of the mainframe and systems programming. Effective Monday 8/2 I will no longer be a Systems Programmer working with z/OS, z/VM or Linux, but will be moving into the dark side as a Manager in our messaging and collaboration group (Lotus Notes, Proofpoint, Sendmail, ...). I will be keeping my TSO userid as long as they allow me to and when that fails I have been given access to a Flex system with z/OS so that I can continue to play with the tools and toys that have provided a wonderful sanity release over the years. I will keep my website up and running and will continue to provide assistance to those asking questions about my tools but would request that those requests, questions, problems, be asked in the forums on my website. The forums can be found at: http://www.lbdsoftware.com/forum/ This is because I will not have as much time to deal with the issues and this provides a vehicle for greater self-help. The bottom line is that the tools/toys (e.g. xmitip) are not stabilized but will continue to be supported and enhanced - just not to the same degree as in the past. Lionel B. Lionel, I join the VSWITCH chorus! Just be aware that using VSWITCH makes you totally dependent upon the network guys for availability and failover. What you gain from this lack of control, of course, is a reduction in resource consumption from being able to rid the environment of those pesky router guests, and the warm feeling that comes from knowing that if connectivity to your guests goes away it's Someone Else's Problem ;) Remind them that availability requires a two-way street -- not only does the request traffic have to reliably reach your guests, but the return traffic has to be able to reliably leave the guests and get back to the LAN. In this scenario that means in addition to dynamic routing for the network to learn the path to the Linux guests, VRRP or HSRP must be used to present a single router image to your Linux guests (since they no longer point to a nice stable z/VM TCPIP stack or Linux router guest within your mainframe anymore, but a router out in the LAN...). There has always been a need for us Penguin Farmers to work closely with the router jockeys -- with VSWITCH, we have to work closer than ever. It seems like your network engineers are fairly together (I like the sound of no static routing), so I expect you will have no trouble in this regard. Another point -- don't get VLAN and VSWITCH confused. VLAN is not required for VSWITCH, meaning that if all your guests can appear to be on the same network you do not have to configure any VLAN stuff at all (even at the LAN switch ports). FTEs per Server
As part of our looking into server consolidation I have been asked for some numbers related to the number of full time employees needed to manage 'n' number of servers. I've been told the industry average is 1 FTE for 15 Unix servers and a consulting company we had in reviewing staffing suggested 1 FTE for every 40 servers. I was wondering what y'all see as a reasonable number of FTEs for 'n' Unix servers and how that changes with virtual servers under z/VM using Linux. thx Lionel B. This url was posted in the grc.techtalk newsgroup and looked very interesting - enjoy all. http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-roadmap.html IBM e-business architect Chris Walden is your guide through a nine-part developerWorks series on moving your operational skills from a Windows to a Linux environment. He covers everything from logging to networking, and from the command-line to help systems -- even compiling packages from available source code. You're moving from Windows to Linux. You've decided you want the stability, flexibility, and cost savings of Linux, but you have many questions in your head. Isn't Linux like Unix? Isn't Unix hard? Where do you begin to make sense of all of this? Is there a map you can follow? This roadmap is designed to help you take the experience and knowledge that you already have in computing and redirect it to working in Linux. It's not the only reference you'll ever need, but it will help you get past some of your first obstacles and adjust to a new and, I think, exciting approach to computing. As you follow this roadmap, you'll discover many new resources to help you learn, troubleshoot, and manage Linux. We're assuming you already have Linux installed. If you don't, go to Linux.org and learn which distributions would fit your needs. You'll also find links to downloads there when you're ready to install Lionel B. I have been told that 6.5 works under the current WINE level. Perhaps with IBM internal rolling out linux configured laptops and desktops they will do something (but I doubt it). The strategy for Notes clients on Linux is to use iNotes on Mozilla which is fully supported. We would all like a native Notes client on Linux, but I can't speak to any plans for such. Jim

Replacing 3270 terminal
Out network folks are trying to convert from SNA to TCP/IP and have been trying to eliminate all the green screens for awhile - the only catch is the budget to replace the 3270's that are used as pure 3270's where there is no need for any intelligence (on the terminal side at least). A solution that I proposed and has been fairly successful so far is to replace the 3270's with surplus pc's (which become available as the 4 and 5 year old pc's are replaced). I take the surplus pc - typically a 350 to 400 mhz pentium and install Linux on it along with x3270. I then set up the pc to autologon (with KDE that is very easy) and then set it so the x3270 starts when the pc boots (by using the KDE autostart feature). One advantage that we've noticed already is that our desktop support doesn't touch these pc's as they don't do Linux and thus they are more stable not 'suffering' from the automatic software distribution and other things that desktop support does to the normal windows pc. hope this helps someone Lionel B. Re: x3270 keymap
From the web site I mentioned and from Joe's note I found a way to create a useful keymap without a lot of effort: 1. open an xterm on your linux pc 2. edit (vi, vim, ...) .x3270pro 3. at the end insert the following statements: x3270.keymap: mine x3270.keymap.mine: #override \ KeyPrior: PF(7) \n\ KeyNext: PF(8)\n\ KeyEscape: Reset()\n\ KeyReturn: Newline()\n\ KeyControl_R: Enter()\n\ KeyEnd:EraseEOF() Then start x3270 and enjoy - this works for me and I'm much happier with the right control being the enter key and the old enter key being the newline key Lionel B. Samba Security Exposure
I just ran into this: (14th Mar, 2003) Security Release - Samba 2.2.8 A flaw has been detected in the Samba main smbd code which could allow an external attacker to remotely and anonymously gain Super User (root) privileges on a server running a Samba server. This flaw exists in previous versions of Samba from 2.0.x to 2.2.7a inclusive. This is a serious problem and all sites should either upgrade to Samba 2.2.8 immediately or prohibit access to TCP ports 139 and 445. The Release Notes are available on-line. In addition to addressing this security issue, Samba 2.2.8 includes many unrelated improvements. These improvements result from our process of continuous quality assurance and code review, and are part of the Samba team's committment to excellence. Guess that they learned more from Microsoft than just the SMB interface ;- Lionel B. Dyck, Systems Software Lead Kaiser Permanente Information Technology 25 N. Re: System administration facility/dirmaint
I have to second Alan's comments. Read the archives and you'll see the frustrations and challenges that I had with SAF. Lionel B. The situation is that the people from IBM told us that they will install it after install zvm, i have never heard about it, i read the info about it and i think that it is a replacement for DirMaint, so i want to know the diferences between both, and the experience of use. The Systems Administration Facility (SAF) is the z/VM compatibility mode for customers who were using the Virtual Image Facility (VIF) product. It is *not* a replacement for DirMaint. If you were not previously using VIF, then I do NOT recommend that you use SAF. While it makes the system easier to administer, it has a lot of limitations that will frustrate you. Use DirMaint. Sadly my management and our architecture group still make the same mistake (even after I politely point it out to them in private). It must be a 'z' thing... Lionel B.
