Shared r/w Filesystem

2012-02-16 Thread Lionel Dyck
What is the recommended cluster filesystem for Linux on z that allows
multiple servers to have read/write access to the same files?

I have an account that is having issues with OCFS2 with SLES 11 SP1.

Thanks

Thanks to everyone who replied. I have been using Quick Rules for so long
I'd forgotten about the full mail rule capabilities which included both

Re: Regina on SLES 11 SP 1

2011-08-31 Thread Lionel Dyck
I haven't done it on Linux (yet) but on Windows I always put ;. in the
PATH so that it would always search the current path when I issued a
command - perhaps if I wasn't so fixated on the command line that wouldn't
have been an issue.

That might be worth considering for Linux

Thanks Mark

That was it.
I would have thought that my current directory would be searched prior to
searching the path.

I didn't need to specify a path for the execs I created on SLES7 thru
SLES10.
I guess it is possible that I accidently, always, put the execs in a
directory that was in the path, but that is kind of stretching it.

Anyway, I can work with specifying the path.

SLES suse_register fails ?

2010-08-11 Thread Lionel Dyck
I've a challenge that I'm hoping someone here can assist with.

I've a server that failed to connect to the Novell center for updates. I
checked the novell center and it hadn't connected for over a year (I was
able to connect 4 months ago to do the SLES 10 sp2 to sp3 upgrade so I
don't know what the last contact date really means).

Last week I checked YaST Online Updates and it would not connect. I called
the novell customer resolution center who suggested removing the server
from the novell center and then running suse_register again. I did that
with no luck. They then suggested following the guidelines in TID 3303599,
which basically says to delete all of the zmd files related to the
registration. I did that with no luck either. (Note I had another server
with a similar issue and the TID steps resolved things there).

Has anyone any recommendations to resolve this as I need to connect to do
a YaST Online Update to get the latest kernel update.

Thanks in Advance

You're looking at an HA cluster using shared storage between the two NFS

to access.

license agreements do not allow you to use z/VM on Hercules. Whoever gave

prohibits them from giving the software to someone else, even to a

While many on this list don't agree with IBM's choices in this matter,
they nonetheless respect IBM's right to make those choices for itself.

Capturing Command output in REXX ?

2010-03-08 Thread Lionel Dyck
In TSO Rexx I can use the OUTTRAP command and in CMS I can use a PIPE to

How can I do that in REXX in Linux?

this:

   'df -h /tmp/tmp.file'

Hi, Lionel.

I'm managed to get RHEL 5.4 installed here with little trouble. Things I
would check for:

1) are the sizes (in bytes0 of the downloaded kernel, parm and initrd

'chccwdev -e 191'

call syssleep(2)

do forever
   line = strip(linein(file))
   if length(line) = 0 then leave
parse value line with '0.0.'addr'(' x ' is 'disk .
if addr = '0191' then leave
   end

say 'disk: *'disk'* file:' filename
'cmsfscat -d /dev/'disk '-a' filename

'chccwdev -d 191'

I'd like to know what these repositories are and what a suggested use for

Extras are for non-supported software that might be useful.
Pool is all the packages for a particular GA release or service pack.
Online is all the packages necessary to perform an online update from SPx-1

Updates are post-GA or post-SP updates.

Also the doc mentions commands which don't exist in the z flavor of SMT
such as smt-repositories - in fact I can't find any of the smt-
 commands.

They're in the smt-1.1.16-0.1.1.s390x.rpm package, which should have been
installed as part of the add-on product installation process:
rpm -qlp smt-1.1.16-0.1.1.s390x.rpm | grep bin/smt-

/usr/sbin/smt-repos
/usr/sbin/smt-setup-custom-catalogs

Just a guess, it appears that smt-repositories should actually be

For all of you that were waiting for the new version of SMT so that you
could host your repository on System z, that is now available. Anyone with
a current SLES subscription is entitled to use it at no additional cost.
The announcement is at http://www.novell.com/linux/smt/

Go to http://download.novell.com/Download?buildid=5qJ9eEidDzs~ to download
it. You'll only need the first DVD image, which is ~25MB in size.

SMT 11 is only supported on a SLES11 system, so this gives you an excuse to
try that out. There's also some nice new features that are talked about in
the FAQ: http://www.novell.com/linux/smt/faq.html#q03

Download directly to z/Linux server ?

2009-07-09 Thread Lionel Dyck

In an effort to save time and reduce overall network traffic I would like
to be able to download SLES ISO files from Novell from my Linux on z server
rather than downloading them to my pc and then uploading them to z.

I've looked, without success, for information on how to do this (I may have
not used the right keywords).

My thought is that I need to use a X server on my windows pc to connect to
the z server and then open a web browser on the z to connect to Novell
where I'd sign in and then download.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

and collaboration group (Lotus Notes, Proofpoint, Sendmail, ...).

I will be keeping my TSO userid as long as they allow me to and when that
fails I have
been given access to a Flex system with z/OS so that I can continue to
play with the
tools and toys that have provided a wonderful sanity release over the
years.

I will keep my website up and running and will continue to provide
assistance to those
asking questions about my tools but would request that those requests,
questions,
problems, be asked in the forums on my website. The forums can be found
at:

  http://www.lbdsoftware.com/forum/

This is because I will not have as much time to deal with the issues and
this provides
a vehicle for greater self-help.

The bottom line is that the tools/toys (e.g. xmitip) are not stabilized
but will continue
to be supported and enhanced - just not to the same degree as in the past.

Lionel,

I join the VSWITCH chorus!

Just be aware that using VSWITCH makes you totally dependent upon the
network guys for availability and failover. What you gain from this lack
of control, of course, is a reduction in resource consumption from being
able to rid the environment of those pesky router guests, and the warm
feeling that comes from knowing that if connectivity to your guests goes
away it's Someone Else's Problem ;)

Remind them that availability requires a two-way street -- not only does
the request traffic have to reliably reach your guests, but the return
traffic has to be able to reliably leave the guests and get back to the
LAN. In this scenario that means in addition to dynamic routing for the
network to learn the path to the Linux guests, VRRP or HSRP must be used
to present a single router image to your Linux guests (since they no
longer point to a nice stable z/VM TCPIP stack or Linux router guest
within your mainframe anymore, but a router out in the LAN...).

There has always been a need for us Penguin Farmers to work closely with
the router jockeys -- with VSWITCH, we have to work closer than ever. It
seems like your network engineers are fairly together (I like the sound of
no static routing), so I expect you will have no trouble in this regard.

Another point -- don't get VLAN and VSWITCH confused. VLAN is not
required for VSWITCH, meaning that if all your guests can appear to be on
the same network you do not have to configure any VLAN stuff at all (even
at the LAN switch ports).

Cheers, and best of luck,
Vic Cross

1. SET VSWITCH ... GRANT user, but do NOT specify any VLAN ID. (Please
also do not say VLAN ANY; just let it default.)
2. Don't configure any VLANs in the guest IP configurations

The guests will be able to talk to each other and through the OSA. The
data will leave the OSA untagged (i.e. with no VLAN IDs). Your physical
switch port will take it from there; it may be using VLANs or it may not -
you won't care.

1 OSA Express GB
1 z/VM 5.1
4 to 20 SuSE linux servers

Yes, Midtown Manhattan, at the Sheraton and Marriott hotels.

No, unlike the '97 conference, which got rescheduled to New Orleans,
this one is really happening in NYC. (I think '97 was also the summer
they moved the conference by a week; a few people made all the

FTEs per Server

2004-04-13 Thread Lionel Dyck
As part of our looking into server consolidation I have been asked for
some numbers related to
the number of full time employees needed to manage 'n' number of servers.

I've been told the industry average is 1 FTE for 15 Unix servers and a
consulting company we had
in reviewing staffing suggested 1 FTE for every 40 servers.

I was wondering what y'all see as a reasonable number of FTEs for 'n' Unix
servers and how that
changes with virtual servers under z/VM using Linux.

In late 2000, the Oklahoma Department of Human Services decided that the
HP
equipment purchased in 1995 to service the Child Welfare division needed
to
be upgraded. The assumption at that time was to continue with HP as the
primary vendor and the operating system would continue as HP-UX; however,
government being the way it is, the bidding invitation was not extended
until early 2002, with the bids arriving in April. At that time a

IBM
e-business architect Chris Walden is your guide through a nine-part developerWorks
series on moving your operational skills from a Windows to a Linux environment.
He covers everything from logging to networking, and from the command-line
to help systems -- even compiling packages from available source code.
You're moving from Windows to Linux. You've
decided you want the stability, flexibility, and cost savings of Linux,
but you have many questions in your head. Isn't Linux like Unix? Isn't
Unix hard? Where do you begin to make sense of all of this? Is there a
map you can follow?
This roadmap is designed to help you take
the experience and knowledge that you already have in computing and redirect
it to working in Linux. It's not the only reference you'll ever need, but
it will help you get past some of your first obstacles and adjust to a
new and, I think, exciting approach to computing. As you follow this roadmap,
you'll discover many new resources to help you learn, troubleshoot, and
manage Linux.
We're assuming you already have Linux installed.
If you don't, go to Linux.org
and learn which distributions would fit your needs. You'll also find links
to downloads there when you're ready to install

client for Linux then IBM is implicitly communicating that Linux is not
ready for the desktop.

David - true - Notes R5 runs very well under Linux/Wine. It was
Notes 6 (the latest and greatest) that I was referring to. I
complained during the early support program for 6.0 and for 6.5 with
no success as it was not a priority for them.

I have been told that 6.5 works under the current WINE level.

Perhaps with IBM internal rolling out linux configured laptops and
desktops they will do something (but I doubt it).

The strategy for Notes clients on Linux is to use iNotes on Mozilla
which is fully supported. We would all like a native Notes client on
Linux, but I can't speak to any plans for such.

Here are two exec's that I used while we were testing linux under z/vm.

Startup exec:

xautolog mlnxd001 synch
xautolog mlnxd004 synch
xautolog mlnxd007 synch
xautolog mlnxd008 synch

Shutdown exec:

/* Program to 'halt' linux machine prior to system shutdown */
call down 'mlnxd001'
call down 'mlnxd004'
call down 'mlnxd007'
call down 'mlnxd008'
say all linux images have been halted
exit 0

down:
parse arg uid
pw = uid
uid = translate(uid)

'Pipe cms id() | specs w1 | var user'
'SET SECUSER' uid user
Address Command 'CP SEND' uid 'root'
'SLEEP 4 SEC'

TXT2PDF is what we have been talking about over in the VSE side.

But, even the author states that it is limited. VSE2PDF does a much
better job and is fairly inexpensive (per the author of txt2pdf).

Since, I have Linux as an option, I wanted to explore the varients
under Linux. I would think that even the program product from Adobe,
may be available for Linux, if not Linux/390.

I could jury-rig a lot of things. Star Office may be able to save in
PDF format. Bring up Word under Wine (would that be a winey word?) and
save in PDF format. There is a package for Windows that allows you to
send keystrokes to applications, which would allow for some scripting.

But Linux must have a better way.

There is a Linux package called (surprisingly enough) 'txt2pdf' (it
might be
'text2pdf', it's been a while). You should be able to search for it
with
Google. It is Perl based and written by a couple of gentlemen from
Italy.
It seemed to work fairly well, but if you want support for mainframe
reports
(carriage control and such) you had to get the commercial version
(which
wasn't real expensive).

On Monday 11 August 2003 03:13 pm, you wrote:

Is there software available for such a process?

I'm thinking about routing printouts to Linux and have a Regina
 process
pick it up, do the PDF conversion and send it along its way.
Doable?

Second tangent, is there software that can use PDF files and drive
an
IP attached printer? And no, I don't mean something that has a gui
screen front end, but something that can be executed within Regina.

 Application for this is

We have been looking at creating green bar overlays for some
printouts
(ok so it will be grey bar).

RSCS has a limit of 255 characters that can be used as a setup
string.
VSE also has that limit, but you can optionally code the setup
string
in an assembler program, and use that table. This works, but I need
 to
cycle the IP stack to make any of these changes. Not the best
option.

So, I'm looking at sending the printouts to another service machine
 (it
may end up being a VSE service machine, or it could be a Linux one).
 I
would rather it be under RSCS, but RSCS doesn't seem to want to
play.

IBM reassures customers on SCO Suit

SCO suit: IBM moves to reassure customers
NEW YORK: IBM Corp is moving to reassure its customers about legal threats
by SCO Group Inc, the software company that has accused IBM of
distributing code it owns in versions of the free Linux operating system.

Lindon, Utah-based SCO has sued IBM, saying the computer maker used parts
of its Unix operating system code to enhance the performance of Linux -- a
freely available operating system increasingly used to run corporate
computer networks.
IBM, the world's largest computer company, has rejected SCO's claims,
saying it has not demonstrated that its intellectual property rights have
been violated.

SCO Group, which provides UNIX-based software and is the owner of the
license
to distribute the UNIX platform, might receive $1 bln from a previous

it filed in Mar against IBM. In addition, the stock has gone from $3.55 in
mid-May to $8.65 on June 11th due to an earnings surprise of a profit
totaling $4.5 mln or $0.33 per share vs. last year's loss of $0.47 per

A fund manager says that even if SCO settles for just 10% of the $1 bln,

claiming that Windows 2003 AD is different.

Can anyone shed any light on this that would help rebut the MS claims?

thx.

Replacing 3270 terminal

2003-06-04 Thread Lionel Dyck
Out network folks are trying to convert from SNA to TCP/IP and have been
trying to eliminate
all the green screens for awhile - the only catch is the budget to replace
the 3270's that are used
as pure 3270's where there is no need for any intelligence (on the
terminal side at least).

A solution that I proposed and has been fairly successful so far is to
replace the 3270's with
surplus pc's (which become available as the 4 and 5 year old pc's are
replaced). I take the
surplus pc - typically a 350 to 400 mhz pentium and install Linux on it
along with x3270. I then
set up the pc to autologon (with KDE that is very easy) and then set it so
the x3270 starts
when the pc boots (by using the KDE autostart feature).

One advantage that we've noticed already is that our desktop support
doesn't touch these
pc's as they don't do Linux and thus they are more stable not 'suffering'
from the automatic
software distribution and other things that desktop support does to the
normal windows pc.

hope this helps someone

Re: x3270 keymap

2003-06-03 Thread Lionel Dyck
From the web site I mentioned and from Joe's note I found a way to create
a useful keymap without a lot of effort:

1. open an xterm on your linux pc
2. edit (vi, vim, ...) .x3270pro
3. at the end insert the following statements:

x3270.keymap: mine
x3270.keymap.mine: #override \
   KeyPrior: PF(7) \n\
   KeyNext: PF(8)\n\
   KeyEscape: Reset()\n\
   KeyReturn: Newline()\n\
   KeyControl_R: Enter()\n\
   KeyEnd:EraseEOF()

Then start x3270 and enjoy - this works for me and I'm much happier with
the right control being the enter key and the old enter key being the
newline key

SOT: XP desktop for Linux

2003-03-31 Thread Lionel Dyck
Slightly Off Topic. For those wanting to have the look/feel of Windows XP
on your Linux desktop take a look at this project:

http://www.xpde.com

It's a desktop environment(XPde) and a window manager(XPwm) for Linux. It
tries to recreate the Windows XP interface to-the-pixel point. Nothing
more, no clipboard compatibility between Gtk and Qt applications, no
emulation of Windows applications, no unification on the widgets of X
applications, just a desktop environment and a window manager.

Samba Security Exposure

2003-03-19 Thread Lionel Dyck
I just ran into this:

(14th Mar, 2003) Security Release - Samba 2.2.8
A flaw has been detected in the Samba main smbd code which could allow an
external attacker to remotely and anonymously gain Super User (root)
privileges on a server running a Samba server. This flaw exists in
previous versions of Samba from 2.0.x to 2.2.7a inclusive. This is a
serious problem and all sites should either upgrade to Samba 2.2.8
immediately or prohibit access to TCP ports 139 and 445. The Release Notes
are available on-line.
In addition to addressing this security issue, Samba 2.2.8 includes many
unrelated improvements. These improvements result from our process of
continuous quality assurance and code review, and are part of the Samba
team's committment to excellence.

Guess that they learned more from Microsoft than just the SMB interface
;-

Vi is very much simpler than ISPF, once you memorize about 12 often used

10 that are used often but don't need to be memorized.

Others have mentioned THE, but I'd add that you should start learning
the native editors ASAP. The structure imposed by ISPF is foreign to
Linux, and THE is not loaded by default on most system (it is a rare
system that has THE on it).

Without expressing preference, take a look at emacs, vi, and pico. These
are far more common that THE (particularly vi and emacs), and are
portable to other Unixen as well. All three should be included in most
distributions of Linux -- check your CDs.
