French usage in beamer

2004-10-07 Thread Nicolas Ferré
Hi
If I insert an example environment in a french beamer document, I get
example instead of exemple. I checked the latex file: frenchb is
passed as an option to beamer, babel is also used. I also tried to
insert in the preamble \usepackage[french]{beamer} but no way to obtain
the french word.
If I modify the beamer.layout file, I guess it changes only the word in
the lyx window, right ?
How can I obtain the french word ?

Re: Mac-LyX is slow

2004-10-07 Thread Peter Ljunglöf
Hi,
thanks for the reply, Bennett.

On Sep 29, 2004, at 4:59 AM, Peter Ljunglöf wrote:
1) The native LyX/Mac port has become terribly slow -- it takes
several seconds just to open a math-macro (with arguments), and
writing inside a math formula can be as slow as 1 character per
second. Editing the main text is also slow, but not that much.
I haven't experienced speeds anywhere near that slow on a 466MHz iBook.
It was quite fast when I only had 20-30 pages. But now I'm reaching 120
pages, and it's a pain to work with. I know I could split the document
into several parts, but I like having one document to work with, and
since LyX/Xforms is fast I stick to that. At least for now.

But this reminds me of a question of keyboard binding. I send that
question as a separate mail though.

2) So I tried both LyX/Qt and LyX/Xforms, installing via fink. LyX/Qt
is much faster, and LyX/Xforms is lightning fast!

Q: Why the extreme differences? Is there any way to make LyX/Mac
faster (it has the best interface, so I'd want to use it)
The next version of LyX/Mac will be compiled with an updated (and
somewhat faster) version of Qt. Hopefully performance will be
acceptable for you.
Yes, let's hope so..
3) The truetype screen fonts look bad -- antialiasing seems not to be
working. This is true for both Qt and Xforms. Now I'm using the
Xforms interface with bitmap fonts -- it's fast and looks, well, it's
readable at least...

Q: Can I turn on antialiasing?
I believe X11 has antialiasing on by default. LyX/Mac should be
antialiased as well.
Yes, my LyX/Mac version has antialiasing on. But not LyX/Xforms. How do
I know if X11 has antialiasing on? (xdvi and gv shows antialiased
text).

4) I also have some kind of X11 problem. The apple cmd key functions
as LyX meta, as it does with e.g. X11/emacs. (I have unchecked
Follow system keyboard layout and Enable key equivalents under
X11 in X11 preferences). BUT: sometimes, I have not figured out
when, LyX forgets that cmd/meta exists -- i.e. pressing cmd-q a
gives me qa, and not greek alpha.

Q: Has anyone got any idea for this problem?
I haven't experienced this problem with other X11 programs, but it's
been a very long time since I tried LyX on X11. Perhaps we could be
more helpful if you could figure out a pattern to the problem. (Do
these problems occur for other programs run under X11 in those cases?
-- It might be an X11 problem, then.)
Ok, this problem is solved - it was a bad X11 init file...

Keyboard switching between documents?

2004-10-07 Thread Peter Ljunglöf
Hi, I have a question on keyboard bindings and .bind files
When working on multiple documents at once, it's nice to be able to
switch between documents (buffers) fast. I have tried a bit to add this
feature to my personal .bind file, but without success so far.

Q: Is it possible to make a .bind file for keyboard switching between
open documents/buffers?

* Either, binding
C-M-Left to next buffer and
C-M-Right to previous buffer.
* Or, an alternative, binding
C-M-1 to buffer nr 1 and
C-M-2 to buffer nr 2 and
C-M-3 to buffer nr 3 etc.
I know there is a function buffer-switch, but it has to get the full
filename as argument. And I know that it is possible to use bookmarks,
but then I have to save the bookmark everytime I leave the buffer.

Printing problem

I'm able to print to a .ps file, which I can then print out with an 'lpr'.

I can't print straight from lyx.
The help pages in the lyx version I've got aren't the most helpful

right things...

I'm using version 1.3.2 on redhat 9.

Re: Printing problem

2004-10-07 Thread Mark Connolly
Perhaps a bit more definition of the problem. When you do File...Print
with a destination of Printer, does it act as though it was normal? Is
there any printer name in destination, or do you have this blank with
the expectation the print will go to the default printer for your machine?
Do you have the targeted printer defined as your default printer?
The destination default can be checked in System Tools, Print Manager
from the desktop (assuming gnome) or printconf.
When you look at LyX Edit-Preferences... Outputs, Printer, is the printer
command dvips? Do the command options look correct as far as
comparing them to your line command that works?

Newbie Questions

2004-10-07 Thread N Castro
Hi everyone.

I'm new to using LyX (and still new to using linux in
general) and I have a few questions. I want to use
LyX to setup the formatting for a text book I want to
self publish. It will have some sections and
chapters, I have been looking at the tips and tricks
section on the main lyx site, but I still have a few
questions that I couldn't find there.

I want the book to be arranged as such:

Introductions
 Chapter A
 Chapter B
Theory
 Chapter C
Design
 Section 1
  Chapter D
  Chapter E
 Section 2
  Chapter F
  Chapter G

I think I would use some arrangement like Part,
Chapter, Section, but I don't want the extra numbers
(such as 1.1.1 subsection, or Chapter 1- Chapter
title), I would like to just have the names of each
section. How would I do this?

Also, LyX is hyphenating my text when it reaches the
margins. How do I disable this feature? I would rather
have text not hyphenated.

Thanks for the help!

* Either, binding
C-M-Left to next buffer and
C-M-Right to previous buffer.
* Or, an alternative, binding

-Noel

You need the files csv2lyx.* and the file preamble-inc.tex.
The file csv2lyx is a small german documentation.
If someone wants to use it, I'll translate the doc into english.

Please do, it would be also interesting to have the new package in contrib.
OK, I've uploaded the english documentation as csv2lyx-en.txt to

French usage in beamer

2004-10-07 Thread Nicolas Ferré
Hi
If I insert an example environment in a french beamer document, I get
"example" instead of "exemple". I checked the latex file: frenchb is
passed as an option to beamer, babel is also used. I also tried to
insert in the preamble \usepackage[french]{beamer} but no way to obtain

If I modify the beamer.layout file, I guess it changes only the word in

How can I obtain the french word ?

Hi,
thanks for the reply, Bennett.

several seconds just to open a math-macro (with arguments), and
writing inside a math formula can be as slow as 1 character per

"Follow system keyboard layout" and "Enable key equivalents under
X11" in X11 preferences). BUT: sometimes, I have not figured out
when, LyX forgets that cmd/meta exists -- i.e. pressing "cmd-q a"
gives me "qa", and not greek alpha.

* Either, binding
"C-M-Left" to "next buffer" and
"C-M-Right" to "previous buffer".
* Or, an alternative, binding
"C-M-1" to "buffer nr 1" and
"C-M-2" to "buffer nr 2" and
"C-M-3" to "buffer nr 3" etc.
I know there is a function "buffer-switch", but it has to get the full
filename as argument. And I know that it is possible to use bookmarks,
but then I have to save the bookmark everytime I leave the buffer.

Do you know how to use a profiler? This would be very useful for
understanding what the problem is. I would be surprised that a Qt/Mac
problem could cause slowness that depends on the size of the document.

It is back up now. To shove your rpm in, you'll need to to something
like:

$ ftp ftp.devel.lyx.org

I interpreted your original mail as saying that the dvi file showed

Printing problem

I've just migrated over to linux and no have to write a PhD thesis! LyX
has been recomended to me, and having used it for a couple of documents,

I'm able to print to a .ps file, which I can then print out with an 'lpr'.
I can also export a .dvi that I can print with the 'dvips' command.
I can't print straight from lyx.
The help pages in the lyx version I've got aren't the most helpful

lyx help, not a printing manual!'), and as everything seems to work
independantly I'm inclined to think lyx isn't telling dvips/lpr the
right things...

I'm using version 1.3.2 on redhat 9.

Re: Printing problem

Perhaps a bit more definition of the problem. When you do File...Print
with a destination of Printer, does it act as though it was normal? Is
there any printer name in destination, or do you have this blank with
the expectation the print will go to the default printer for your machine?
Do you have the targeted printer defined as your default printer?
The destination default can be checked in System Tools, Print Manager
from the desktop (assuming gnome) or printconf.
When you look at LyX Edit->Preferences... Outputs, Printer, is the printer
command dvips? Do the command options look correct as far as
comparing them to your line command that works?

This may seem silly, but I've seen this as a problem for some folks in
the past. In particular my office mate told me he couldn't ever get
LyX to print. I was curious, so I tried it, and *his* LyX printed
for *me*. It took us a while to figure out what I was doing that he
wasn't...

The default option on the print dialog is cancel, not print. If you
just hit Enter when the dialog comes up, you cancel the dialog. You
have to click on the print button at the bottom.

Due to lyx2lyx (don't you think that there too may xxx2lyx around ;-)
there is no problem, lyx will be able to read the resulting code, no matter
what version.

I have tested csv2lyx, even with 1.4.0cvs, so I can assure you that it
works. :-)

Please do, it would be also interesting to have the new package in contrib.

Newbie Questions

2004-10-07 Thread N Castro
Hi everyone.

I'm new to using LyX (and still new to using linux in
general) and I have a few questions. I want to use
LyX to setup the formatting for a text book I want to
self publish. It will have some sections and
chapters, I have been looking at the tips and tricks
section on the main lyx site, but I still have a few
questions that I couldn't find there.

I want the book to be arranged as such:

Introductions
 Chapter A
 Chapter B
Theory
 Chapter C
Design
 Section 1
  Chapter D
  Chapter E
 Section 2
  Chapter F
  Chapter G

I think I would use some arrangement like Part,
Chapter, Section, but I don't want the extra numbers
(such as 1.1.1 subsection, or Chapter 1- Chapter
title), I would like to just have the names of each
section. How would I do this?

Also, LyX is hyphenating my text when it reaches the
margins. How do I disable this feature? I would rather
have text not hyphenated.

Thanks for the help!

-Noel

Use the starred form of the environments, e.g. choose "section*" instead
of "section"

choose Layout -> Paragraph -> left aligned

No, Joachim Heidemeier is the author of my csv2lyx version. I retrieved
his posting on the mailing list:

http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg29215.html
So it seems that he rewrote csv2lyx.
His converter isn't able to convert longtables. Is the csv2lyx from
lyx.org able to do this?

You need the files csv2lyx.* and the file preamble-inc.tex.
The file csv2lyx is a small german documentation.
If someone wants to use it, I'll translate the doc into english.

OK, I've uploaded the english documentation as csv2lyx-en.txt to
http://fkurth.de/uwest/LyX/

At

is a workaround:
Add
\theoremstyle{example}
\newtheorem{exafran}[theorem]{Exemple}
\renewenvironment{example}{\begin{exafran}}{\end{exafran}}
to the preamble.

AFAIU, it's more a babel problem than a beamer problem.
Seems logical to insert this in frenchb.cfg,
unless you need to hand over the document to someone else.

Right ?
