[Mac-Access]: Burning a CD on iMac

2015-05-31 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running the latest Mac OS 10.10.3 on my iMac. I need to burn several
copies of a CD containing some radio programs.

SO I first completely erased the contents of a re-writable CD (or maybe it was
a DVD). I then copied the required MP3 files into a folder and went to the
context menu for that folder. I chose the burn option and the MP3 files were
written to the CD. this CD played correctly in the CD player on my music centre
and it also played correctly in the CD player of one of my contacts but did not
play in the CD players of my other contacts.

This may be because the re-writable CD was in fact a re-writable DVD which then
plays in some CD players but does not play in other CD players.

Is there any way I can tell whether the re-writable optical disk is a CD or a
DVD? If it is a DVD can I somehow reformat it so that it becomes a CD?

If it is a CD how can I burn it so that it plays in all CD players, some of
which are several years old?

Many thanks for any tips.

[Mac-Access]: Saving mail on iPhone

2015-05-26 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running IOS 8.3 on my iPhone 5S. I would like to save a received Email in
a folder local to my iPhone with a folder name relating to the subject of the
Email. I do this all the time using Apple mail on my iMac and it is a very
useful facility.

On the iPhone I tried the move button for iPhone mail which does let me move
the mail item to one of a predefined set of mail boxes, but I could not see any
way to create a mail box (or folder) with a name which I create.
Is this possible on IOS and if so how?
Many thanks.

[Mac-access]: BBC weather App on IOS 8.3.

2015-05-02 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running IOS 8.3 on my iPhone 5S. I really like the BBC weather App which
worked perfectly on earlier IOS releases but does not work well on IOS 8.3.

In previous IOS releases I used to flick right with one finger across the list
of 10 days to hear the wether summary for that day. In IOS 8.3 this gesture
just lets me access the first 4 of the 10 days and I cannot see the data for
the other days. Similarly I used to double tap on the day summary to display an
hour by hour weather forecast for that day. I was able to flick right with one
finger to access the data for the whole day hour by hour. In IOS 8.3 I can only
access the first 4 hours in that way.

I am told that visually the extra hours and extra days are off the screen to
the right. Have the VoiceOver gestures changed in some way so that I have to
use a different gesture to access the whole 10 days and all the hourly
forecasts for the current day? Or is this an IOS 8.3 bug or maybe a BBC wether
App bug?

Many thanks for any tips.

[Mac-access]: Problems with touchID on iPhone 5S

2015-04-14 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I have an iPhone 5S which is about 6 months old and which is currently running
IOS 8.3.

TouchID worked well for the first 4 months or so, but alas is now unreliable.
If I register a new fingerprint it works fine for about 2 days and then the
finger print is no longer recognised.

Do any listers have tips on the best way to position fingers or thumbs during
the initial fingerprint registration or any other tips on how to make touchID
reliable. I have tried cleaning the home button with a dry cloth and also tried
registering the same finger several times as if they were all different
fingers. Would it help to clean the home button in some other way?

Many thanks for any tips. TouchID is great while it works!

Do any other listers have problems with TouchID on iPhone 5S? Is TouchID on
iPhone 6 reliable?

Best regards….

[Mac-access]: Deleting old calendar entries

2015-04-09 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running Mac OS 10.10.3 on my iMac and IOS 8.2 on my iPhone. I keep a
shared calendar on iCloud.

Is there an easy way to delete all calendar events before some specified date
while retaining future instances of repeated events which were originally set
up before that specified date?

Currently my calendar is cluttered with events going back to November 2013. I
would like to delete all events earlier than January 2015. Is there any easy
way to do this other than delete them one event at a time?

Many thanks.

[Mac-access]: Problems updating my Facebook profile

2015-03-21 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running Yosemite on my iMac. I originally created my Facebook profile some
time ago, possibly under Windows. I now want to add extra work places and my
high school. I am using menutab pro for Facebook.

If I use the desktop version of Facebook I can get to combo boxes where I
should be able to enter a new work place or a new school but alas it seems I
can only enter work places or schools which my Facebook friends attended. If I
try to add any other work place I get an invalid work place error.

SO I then tried switching to the mobile Facebook interface. Using this I can
get to edit boxes where I can enter details of an additional work place with no
problems but alas the button to save this is dimmed!

I have tried accessing Facebook using the Lightning and Google browsers but get
the same results. I have also tried Facebook using Safari on my iPhone with the
same results.

I have had a look at my Facebook account settings to see if profile updates
from the mobile interface might be disabled but could not see anything obvious.

Any thoughts? I guess I could try starting Windows under VMWare but don’t
really want to do that.

Many thanks.

[Mac-access]: Facebook on Masc OS

2015-03-14 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I know this topic has recently been discussed but alas I did not follow that
discussion.

I have been trying to use facebook on Yosemite 10.10.3 beta using Safari and
the facebook web site. Using VoiceOver I have found this extremely confusing
and for me pretty much unusable. Is there an App which I can download from the
App store which will provide a VoiceOver friendly interface to facebook?

A friend from many years ago has found my facebook account, which I hardly ever
use. Initially I want to look at the about information for that friend to
catchup on what they have been doing, and then to send a message to that
friend. I also need to update my facebook profile to add more detail. I cannot
figure out how to do either of the above using VoiceOver on the facebook web
site. I thus hope an App will make this easier.

Many thanks for any advice….

[Mac-access]: Apple Mail question

2015-03-08 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running Yosemite public beta 10.10.3. I have Apple Mail set to classic
view and have checked the view option to group messages by conversation.

I am unclear on how to handle multiple messages in the same conversation using
VO. This is easy on my iPhone as selecting such a message reveals a list of all
the messages in that conversation which I can then read one by one. On Yosemite
I can easily access the first message in that conversation but cannot reliably
access all the other messages in that conversation. Somehow these are all
getting deleted.

So what is the technique on Yosemite to access multiple messages in the same
conversation?

Many thanks.

[Mac-access]: Searching for a TV program on Apple TV

2015-02-18 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I have the latest version of Apple TV with the latest software.
I wanted to watch again a TV show on Channel 4 in the UK. I located Channel 4
on the Apple TV and selected it. I was then presented with a list of 253
possible TV shows, with hopefully the one I want somewhere in that list. Alas
the list did not seem to be sorted in any sensible order and it would be very
tedious to check out each of the 253 in turn.
Is there anything I can do to improve this situation? Can I enter a search
string or if not can I sort the list in the date order of when the TV show was
originally broadcast with the most recent show first.
I only have the Apple TV remote with its three buttons.
The documentation is not that great. I did buy a short guide to the Apple TV
from the ibook store but it relates to a rather old model.
Many thanks for any help….

[Mac-access]: Downloading channel 4 TV programs

2015-02-17 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running Mac OS 10.10.2.
Has anyone found a way to download TV programs from Channel 4 in the UK to Mac
OS? The Internet advises installing an App MacVideoDownloader. I have done this
but cannot get the App to work under VoiceOver.
I normally use get iPlayer Automator to download TV programs from the BBC and
ITV but the option to downloade from Channel 4 (More4) is dimmed suggesting
that the get iPlayer Automator app does not yet support this feature.
Many thanks for any tips

[Mac-access]: Adding contacts to a group

[Mac-access]: Nicknames in contacts

2015-02-09 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
i have an iPhone 5S running IOS 8.1.2 and an iMac running Mac OS 10.10.2.
Contacts are synced between the two.

If I go to the task bar on my iPhone (double press of the home button) I see a
list of recently called phone contacts. this list includes just the first name
such as Bob. Unfortunately I phone two different people called bob so I am
not sure which Bob is which. Is it possible to add nicknames to my contacts so
that people with the same first name can be distinguished? Note that I would
not want the nickname to appear in any email I sent to that contact!

I had a look at contacts and could see no obvious way to do this but I
understand that Siri will let me say call mum where presumably 'mum' is a
nick name.

Many thanks.

[Mac-access]: Allowing iTunes to receive incoming connections

2015-01-28 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running the latest Yosemite 10.10.2. I have firewall turned on in the
security section of system preferences. I have Apple TV setup to stream from
iTunes.

Every time I start iTunes I see an alert message asking me to allow or deny
incoming network connections to iTunes. I always choose allow. If I turn off
firewall then I do not see this alert.

I have looked at the firewall options and see that iTunes is set to allow
incoming connections. So I should not see the above alert.

Is there some other option I need to set to always allow iTunes to receive
incoming network connection requests? Is this a bug? For security reasons I
would like to run with firewall set on…

Many thanks for any help….

[Mac-access]: Alert every time I start iTunes

2015-01-20 Thread Paul Hopewell

Can I do anything to stop this alert? I checked out my firewall settings and

Presumably this is all happening because the Apple TV is set to stream files

[Mac-access]: Dettaching an attachment in 1 password

2015-01-18 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running the latest Yosemite on my iMac with the latest 1 password 5.

I started using 1 password at 1 password 3 a long time ago and have migrated up

detach and view.

How do I detach an attachment? I have tried the obvious such as locating the
attachment in the secure note detail and doing a mouse click on it but to no
avail. I was rather hoping that the 1 password file menu would include an
option to detach and attachment but no luck.

Any ideas? If I cannot detach the desired file then I have a problem as it is
my only copy!

[Mac-access]: Will mograting to iCloud drive stop calendar and contacts sync to IOS 7?

2015-01-06 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running the latest Yosemite on my iMac and the latest IOS 8 on my iPhone

calendar and contacts across all three devices.

I would like to move to the iCloud drive on my iMac and iPhone 5S but am
concerned that this may stop calendar and contacts sync to the iPhone 4. I have
looked at various forums on google and cannot find a definitive answer to the
above question.

Am I correct in thinking that migration to iCloud drive is irreversible, i.e. I
cannot get back to where I was before moving to iCloud drive.

Many thanks.

[Mac-access]: Restoring iMac from Superduper! and time machine

2015-01-05 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running the latest Yosemite on my iMac with the latest Superduper! backup
/ restore application. I also have time machine always set on.

Is it possible to restore my Mac OS from a Duperduper! backup taken in November
2014 and then restore all user data such as Email, calendar, iTunes library, 1
password data and user data files from my time machine?

I basically want to roll back a troublesome Mac OS and then restore all other
data to the current time without also restoring the troublesome Mac OS.

Best regards and Happy New Year….

[Mac-access]: Question about movies from the itunes store

2014-12-27 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am contemplating renting or buying a movie from the iTunes store but first
have a couple of questions. I have never purchased or rented a movie from
anywhere before.

When I look up a movie title on the iTunes store I see a price of around £14
for HD and £10 for SD. I am unclear on whether this is the rental price or the
purchase price. This may arise because the movies I looked up are recent
releases (Mr Turner and the Imitation Game) and may not be available for both
rental and purchase. I am primarily interested in rental.

i see that rented movies have to be watched within 30 days of download and once
started watching has to be completed within 48 hours. Can I only watch a rented
movie once within the 30 days?

both the above movies are listed as pre-order. what does this mean?

Is audio description standard in all movies from the iTunes store? If so do I
have to do anything special to enable audio description? If it is not standard
are there options to enable me to choose a version with audio description? How
do I know which movies have audio description and which do not?

Many thanks for any help on the above.
Happy New Year to all listers….

[Mac-access]: Will iCloud drive stop calendar/contacts sync on IOS 7?

2014-12-24 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running the latest IOS 8 on iPhone 5S and the latest IOS 7 on iPhone 4 and
the latest Yosemite and iTunes on iMac. I currently have iCloud drive disabled.
I currently sync contacts and calendar across all 3 devices.

I am considering enabling iCloud drive but am concerned that this may prevent
calendar/contacts sync to IOS 7. I have searched the forums but cannot find a
definitive answer on whether migrating to iCloud drive will prevent
calendar/contacts sync to devices running IOS 7.

Am I correct in thinking that any migration to iCloud drive is irreversible?
Once done you cannot go back to no iCloud drive. Hence I am reluctant to try it
in case calendar/contacts sync to my IOS 7 device is permanently clobbered.

Many thanks for any definitive information on this question.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all listers….

[Mac-access]: iCloud drive compatibility question

2014-12-21 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running Mac OS 10.10.1 on my iMac and IOS 8.1.2 on my iPhone 5S. My wife
is running the latest IOS 7 on her iPhone 4. Contacts and Calendars are
currently synced across all 3 devices and it is essential that we retain this
facility.

Following discussion on this list about podcasts on iOS 8.1.2 I am considering
installing downcast on my iPhone 5S. However to sync podcasts with my iMac it
seems that I have to enable iCloud drive which is currently not enabled. If I
do that will it still be possible to sync contacts and calendars across iMac,
iPhone 5S and iPhone 4? Note that I do not want to sync any other types of
document with the iPhone 4.

If any problems arise over iCloud drive can I disable it and go back to my
current situation?
Many thanks.

[Mac-access]: Confused about podcasts on iPhone 5S

2014-12-20 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I have an iPhone 5S running IOS 8.1.2 and an iMac running MAC OS 10.10.1. I
normally access podcasts using iTunes on my iMac and then sync them to my iPod
Nano G7 so that I can listen to them on the move.

However there is now a problem with the iPod Nano and so I instead want to
access podcasts on my iPhone 5S. When I had an iPhone 3GS running IOS 6
podcasts appeared in the Music App on the iPhone and were synced with iTunes
just like they are on the iPod Nano. that worked fine.

Now on the iPhone 5S I cannot see podcasts in the Music App at all. I see that
there is a Podcast App on the iPhone and if I open that I see the same list of
podcasts as in iTunes on my iMac. However my iPhone contains a large number of
podcasts which I have already listened to on the iPod.

I would really like the iPhone 5S to behave like the iPhone 3GS and sync
podcasts with iTunes in the normal way so that podcasts appear in the Music App
on the iPhone 5S. How can I accomplish this?

If the above is not possible is there any way to mark a large number of
podcasts or even all podcasts in the iPhone podcasts App as played to reduce
confusion?

Many thanks for any help….

[Mac-access]: iPhone 5S step counter

2014-12-15 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I have an iPhone 5S which I recently upgraded from IOS 8.1.1 to IOS 8.1.2.
Since the upgrade all my pedometer Apps are showing my step count about 25%
higher than for the same walk distance (approximately) for IOS 8.1.1. Do others
notice this and if so is there anything I can do about it? Also which is the
true step count - the IOS 8.1.1 version or the IOS 8.1.2 version? I like the
IOS 8.1.2 version better as it is easier to reach my daily goal of 10,000 steps
but wishful thinking will not enhance fitness!

Note that I put my iPhone in my trouser side pocket while walking. Perhaps it
would give a more accurate result if put somewhere else?

Best regards….

[Mac-access]: disabling accented characters on iPhone data entry

2014-12-08 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I have an iPhone 5S running the latest level of IOS 8. I use the data entry
method where you slide your finger over the virtual keyboard until you find the
desired character and then lift your finger to enter that character.

As I use my finger rather than a stylus I am rather slow finding the desired
character and often wait for the phonetic version e.g. Victor for V or Bravo
for B to confirm that I am entering the correct character. Alas this technique
often triggers the option to select and enter accented versions of the desired
character which I have trouble escaping from.

Is there any way to disable the option to enter accented character mode, or if
not what is the correct way to escape from this mode and revert to normal
characters?

Many thanks for any tips.
Best regards…..

[Mac-access]: How to get a song onto iTunes?

2014-11-14 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running the latest Mac OS Yosemite and associated iTunes.

I have an MP3 file which I recorded on my iPhone which is now on my iMac. It
presumably lacks tags like artist, album, etc. I want to add it to the iTunes
library and so tried to open it with iTunes. My plan was to then find it in the
recently added playlist and then add the album, artist etc tags.

Alas iTunes will not play the MP3 file. Quicktime player plays it fine, so it
is a good file.

I wondered about the tag editor in file information but could not work out how
to use that.

Any ideas? I am sure that in the past I could open an arbitrary MP3 file with
iTunes which would import that file into the iTunes library and tag it with
“Unknown artist” and “unknown album”. Has this option now been removed?

Many thanks for any tips.

[Mac-access]: How to intercept audio playing in Safari

2014-11-14 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running the latest Yosemite and Safari on my iMac.

I need to transfer an audio file which is playing in Safari to my iPod. The
Safari file plays as a result of pressing a button labeled ‘Play / Pause” in a
Safari page. The audio file is presumably downloaded and stored somewhere on my
iMac and played from there. Is there any way to intercept this audio file so
that I can move it into iTunes and then onto my iPod? there are no copyright
issues as the file relates to a choir to which I belong.

I can play the file in Safari and record it on my iPhone and after some trouble
get it back onto my iMac and then into iTunes but I hope there is an easier
way!

I do have audio hijack pro on my iMac but have not fathomed out how to use that
to intercept the Safari audio file while ignoring VoiceOver output.

Many thanks for any tips.

Re: [Mac-access]: Get iPlayer

2014-11-13 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello Eleanor,
Ar you confusing ‘get iplayer’ and ‘get iplayer automator’? I strongly
recommend ‘get iplayer automator’ which does not involve anything difficult
like terminal. FYI here is some info on ‘get iplayer automator’i

Playing TV and Radio programs on an Apple Macintosh

The free App ‘Get iPlayer Automator’ is a great way to download and play TV and
radio programs on an Apple Macintosh. You can download TV programs from the BBC
, ITV and Channel 4 and radio programs from the BBC including those from
regional stations. You can search for desired programs by entering words which
might appear in the program title and you can set preferences to download the
audio described version of the program if it is available. You can request that
downloaded programs are automatically added to your iTunes library from where
you can play them or transfer them to portable devices such as iPhone, iPod,
and iPad. You can automatically add programs which are part of a series to your
download queue as they become available. Finally if you live outside the UK you
can still download British TV and radio programs via a provided proxy.

Get iPlayer Automator requires Mac OS 10.7 or later. You can download it free
from
http://tom-tech.com/iplayer_automator/iPlayer_Automator/Get_iPlayer_Automator.html

http://tom-tech.com/iplayer_automator/iPlayer_Automator/Get_iPlayer_Automator.html.
Copy the ‘Get iPlayer Automator.app’ from your download folder to your
application folder and open it. Wait a few seconds and you will be invited to
upgrade to the latest level which at the time of writing is 1.5.3 (536). You
now need to change a few of the default preferences. Open the preference pane
for Get iPlayer Automator and go to the general tab. If you live in the UK you
must set the Proxy option to None. The default is Provided which should work if
you live outside the UK but I have no way to test this. If you want to download
BBC radio programs as well as TV programs ensure that BBC Radio and BBC
Podcasts options are checked in the Items to Cache group. These are not checked
by default. Also ensure that the Download Audio Described and Signed Versions
option is checked. This is checked by default and will download the audio
described version of a program if it is available. If no audio described
version is available it will download the standard version. Now close the
preference pane.

To download a program first enter one or more words which might appear in the
program title into the Search For Shows edit box and press the Enter key. After
a few seconds look in the Search Results table for the desired show(s) and
select them. Now press the Add To Queue button to add the desired show(s) to
the download queue. Then check that the desired show(s) really are in the
download queue and if this queue contains any unwanted shows select them and
press the - button to remove them. Now go to the Toolbar and press the Start
button to start downloading the desired show(s). These will be saved in the
Download Path specified in the preference pane which by default is set to the
Movies/TV Shows folder in your user area. Downloaded TV programs will also
appear in the TV Shows part of your iTunes library from where you can play the
desired shows. Downloaded radio programs will appear in the Music part of your
iTunes library and can be found by going to Artists and looking for BBC Radio.

You can use the TVR feature of Get iPlayer Automator to automatically download
the next available program of a nominated series the next time you start Get
iPlayer Automator. To do this press the TVR button in the Toolbar. This brings
up a panel enabling you to search for a show in a series of shows and then add
that series to the TVR queue. The next time you start Get iPlayer Automator it
will search for the next show for each entry in the TVR queue and if one is
found it will add it to your download queue.

Each time you start Get iPlayer Automator it refreshes its index of possible
shows. If you have not used Get iPlayer Automator for a while this can take
several minutes during which the Search For Shows edit box is dimmed. You then
just need to be patent and wait for the Search For Shows edit box to become
available.

[Mac-access]: Problems with Find My iPhone

2014-11-06 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I have an iPhone 5S running the latest IOS 8. I had set the iPhone up with
“Find my iPhone” enabled in the phone’s iCloud settings. Bad idea

This afternoon my phone suddenly stopped talking in the middle of reading an
Email. I tried pressing the home key 3 times to restart VoiceOver but to no
effect. I then tried a 3 finger double tap to turn on speech assuming it had
somehow become disabled. No joy. I turned the phone off and back on again but
could not get VoiceOver to start. I then connected the phone to my iMac and
tried “restore from backup”. itunes told me that I had to first turn “Find my
iPhone” off in the phone’s iCloud settings before I could restore the backup.
As I could not get the phone to speak I could not do that.

So I was stuck until my sighted wife came home and looked at the screen. She
saw a message saying that the phone was disabled and that I had to wait 16
minutes before entering my passcode to restart the phone. After 30 minutes my
wife was able to start the phone and enter the passcode. She then saw that
VoiceOver was turned off in the accessibility options and so turned it on for
me. I then turned off “Find my iPhone” but tat caused VoiceOver to stop
speaking and demanded my Apple password before it would disable “Find my
iPhone”. My wife had to do that for me and then had to re-enable VoiceOver from
the accessibility options.

I suspect that somehow the “find my iPhone’ sequence had been activated by
some spurious event which caused all the above problems.

As it seems that it is not possible for a blind person to recover from such a
event I would recommend that you do not set “Find my iPhone” on!

does anyone have any insight into this problem?

Many thanks.

[Mac-access]: Confused about groups in Apple Contacts

2014-10-31 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am hoping someone can clarify how to create named groups of people in Apple
Contacts on my iMac and hence allow Emailing to distribution lists in Apple
Mail.

I have about 200 contacts in iCloud in a group called “All iCloud”. I want to
include about 10 of these contacts into a group called “Philosophy” also on
iCloud so that the distribution list in available on multiple devices.

So I created the Philosophy group under iCloud and copied some of the
philosophy members into the Philosophy group. However these members now appear
twice in my “all Contacts” list.

So I tried moving the contacts into the Philosophy group instead. that is fine
but I now wonder what to do if I want a member of the Philosophy group to also
be a member of the Discussion group.

I would appreciate any advice on the above.

Many thanks.

Re: How to tell if I am on the release level of Yosemite

2014-10-23 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello Brian and Sarah,
Many thanks for the information on how to find my Yosemite build number. I am
at 14A388B rather than 14A389 so not quite at the release level.
So how can I do a clean install of the release level? Last time I tried to
install from the App store I got Yosemite Beta 1 which is not what I wanted! I
see that my system preferences for App Store say that I am set up for beta
software. I wonder if I should turn that off and then try the install from the
App store again.
Or maybe 14A388B is sufficiently close to the release level that its not worth
the re-install.
Many thanks

How to tell if I am on the release level of Yosemite

2014-10-21 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I have been a beta tester for Yosemite and over time have installed all the
betas from beta 1 through beta 7.

Does this mean that I am now on the official release of Yosemite? The about
this Mac menu item does not show any build number. It just says Mac OS 10.10.
Software update says that no updates are available.

Just to be sure I did try installing Yosemite from the App store but it said
that Mac OS 10.10 was already installed and that I should check for updates.
However it also gave me the option to install a fresh copy of Mac OS 10.10.

So I did that but to my surprise and annoyance it took me back to Yosemite beta
1! I did not want to go through installing all the other betas so instead
restored a superduper! backup of Yosemite beta 7.

So do I now have the official released of Mac OS 10.10? Is there any way to be
sure? If not what should I do?

Many thanks.

Drop box on Yosemite fixed

2014-10-20 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am pleased to say that drop box 2.11.28 fixed the problem that the context
menu items to copy the link to a file in dropbox/public was missing in Yosemite
with earlier releases of dropbox. Dropbox 2.11.28 is a beta release but if you
google it you can find a link to download it.
Best regards….

Moving a calendar from gmail to icloud

2014-10-12 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I use the Apple calendar App on my iMac. Currently all my calendar entries are
on my gmail account so that my wife can access them from her Android phone. She
is now moving to an Apple iPhone and so I would like to keep the calendar on
iCloud rather than gmail.

Is there an easy way to move all my existing calendar events from my gmail
account and instead store them in my iCloud account?

Many thanks.

Is there a GPS based compas App for iPhone 5S

2014-10-11 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I have an iPhone 5S which sits in a very nice protective case but alas the
magnetic clasp on the case stops the built in compass from working. Where ever
I face it always says “East”, even after recalibration. the compass works fine
when the phone is out of the case.

I am very reluctant to go for walks with the phone outside its protective case,
but I do find the compass very handy when lost.

I therefore wonder if there is an App which uses GPS to determine direction.
When lost I am happy to walk a short distance in some direction and would like
the App to tell me which direction I had walked in. Does anyone know of such a
VoiceOver accessible App?

Alternatively does anyone know of a good iPhone 5S protective case which does
not have a magnetic clasp?

Many thanks for any help.

How to 'slide to stop'

2014-10-06 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
How do I activate an iPhone App control labeled as “slide to stop”? Double tap
does not work. Turning off VoiceOver and sliding up, down, left, right with one
finger or two fingers does not work either.

How would “slide to stop” work for someone not using VoiceOver?

the App in question is Runtastic pedometer. On IOS 6 I can use the task
Switcher to stop the App. I can then restart the App and choose to delete the
session and then start a new session. On IOS 8 I can still stop the App using
the App switcher, but on restarting the App it carries on from where it left
off. I have not yet found a way to reset the step count and miles to zero.
Hopefully “slid to stop” would do that if I could only activate that control.

Many thanks for any help.

Can I change the name iTunes gives to my iPhone?

2014-10-06 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
Is it possible to change the iPhone name which iTunes allocates when you first
set up an iPhone? I ask as I have an iPhone 3GS and an iPhone 5S which have
confusingly similar names. I would like to change the name allocated to one of
them.

Note that when I first connected the iPhone 5S to my iMac I asked it to restore
the backup of my iPhone 3GS. Maybe that is why they have similar names!

When I get a decent case for the 5S I will use that by default but will keep
the 3GS as a backup phone.

Many thanks.

iPhone Family sharing question

2014-10-01 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I have an iPhone 5S running IOS 8.0.2 which I sync to iTunes on my iMac. My
wife will shortly inherit an iPhone 4 which has been reset to factory settings
and which I recall will run IOS 7 but not IOS 8. She will want to manage this
from her Windows PC and so will install iTunes on that PC.

Presumably when my wife first connects the iPhone 4 to iTunes she will have to
sign onto the iTunes store using my Apple ID and password and to tell iTunes
that the iPhone 4 is a new phone. If she accesses the iTunes App store from the
iPhone 4 she will likewise have to sign on using my Apple ID and password.

Can my wife then install for free some of the Apps I have purchased from the
iTunes store? If so what does she have to do to achieve that?

I have enabled family sharing on my iPhone 5S but am not clear if all sharing
devices have to be IOS 8.

Many thanks for your advice.

Type2Phone and IOS 8.0.2

2014-09-28 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I have recently acquired an iPhone 5S which is now running IOS 8.0.2.

I also have an iPhone 3GS running the latest IOS 6. On the 3GS I found it very
handy to use type2Phone on my iMac to emulate a bluetooth keyboard for entering
passwords and the like on the iPhone. With their mixtures of characters,
numbers, cases and symbols these are rather tricky to enter using the iPhone
virtual keyboard.

to my dismay type2Phone does not work with the iPhone 5S. Pressing the cursor
left and right keys moves between fields on the iPhone but typing letters or
numbers does not do anything on the iPhone.

I have keyboard and numpad and trackpad commanders turned on and quicknav
turned off. I tried turning numpad commander off but that made no difference.

Presumably these problems are related to the other posts on IOS 8 and
bluetooth keyboard issues.

Are there any workarounds to this problem?
Many thanks.

Arranging home page on IOS 8

2014-09-28 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am having a very frustrating time trying to move all my Apps on my iPhone 5S
into sensible folders on home page 1. .

I currently have folders on 4 columns and 4 rows on page 1. Now there are App
Icons on page 2 which I want to move into the appropriate folder on page 1.
When I move an App from page 2 onto page 1 it seems to go into row 5 on page 1.
If I then press the home key and go to page 1 and double tap and hold any Icon
on row 5 I do not get the ability to move that Icon into any of the folders on
page 1. In fact I do not get the ability to move Icons on row 5 of page 1 at
all.
Any ideas?
Many Thanks.

How to download a previously purchased iPhone App

2014-09-26 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am trying to download an iPhone App which I had purchased some time ago and
subsequently deleted from itunes. I have now moved to IOS 8 where this App will
now work again but cannot download it.

If I go to the itunes App store the download button for the App is dimmed. If I
go to the purchased tab in iTunes I can see the App but there is no button to
re-download it.

I recall that there is a keystroke which will undim a dimed control, which
would then let me redo the download.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
Many thanks.

Enabling touch typing on iPhone

2014-09-25 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
Can someone please remind me how to enable touch typing on an iPhone. This is
the typing mode where you slide your finger across the virtual keyboard and
when you hear the desired character you lift your finger off the virtual
keyboard and presto that character is entered.

I had this working on IOS 6 but after restoring my IOS 6 backup on an IOS 8
device the touch typing no longer works. I have searched everywhere to try to
turn it back on but with no success. I then tried looking for the option to
turn it on on IOS 6 but could not find it there either.

Many thanks.

Hello,
Many thanks for the info on touch typing on IOS 8.

I vaguely recall reading some posts about bluetooth keyboards on IOS 8. IS
there a problem there? I have been trying to use the iMac ASpp Type2Phone to my

does not enter them on the iPhone.

Any thoughts….

Problems upgrading iPhone?

2014-09-23 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I have an iPhone 3GS 16GB running the latest IOS 6 and syncing to my iMac
running the latest iTunes. I have about 30 Apps on the phone which I spent a
long time arranging into folders on the home page. Many of these Apps have
associated data such as userids, passwords, favourite destinations, weight, and
so on.

I am about to purchase an iPhone 5S 32GB. I initially want it configured
identically to the 3GS - same Apps, same folder structure, and same App data. I
initially want to keep the 3GS as a backup phone. Later I may want to add some
extra IOS 8 only Apps to the 5S and also add more music to the 5S to exploit
its greater storage.

When I first connect the 5S to iTunes will it get the same name as the 3GS by
default? If so will the 5S then be automatically configured like the 3GS with
the same Apps, same folders, and same App data? Does the fact that the 3GS is
IOS 6 and only 16GB while the 5S is IOS 8 and 32GB cause any problems?

IF the above works OK can I still connect the 3GS to iTunes and sync it
possibly with new Apps in the normal way? Can I later change the name of the 5S
so that I can add IOS 8 only Apps and more music to that and meanwhile leaving
the 3GS with is current Apps and music?

If I give the 5S a different name than the 3GS during initial 5S setup then
will iTunes consider it to be a completely different device? If so then
presumably I would have to do all the work on the 5S to manually build the same
folder structure to the 3GS and I would also have to manually set up all the
Apps on the 5S with the same data as the Apps on the 3GS. That looks like a lot
of work. However it would then enable me to install extra Apps and extra music
on the 5S.

What do you advise me to do?
Many thanks.

iPhone backup and restore

iTunes has no windows

2014-07-16 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running the latest level of Mac OS 10.9.4 and the latest level of iTunes.
I frequently use command+tab to cycle round my windows and I frequently hear
iTunes has no windows. This has only started happening after updating to Mac
OS 10.9.4. If I quit iTunes and then restart iTunes the problem goes away
briefly. If I stay in the iTunes window iTunes works fine but usually when I
tab away to a different window and then back to iTunes I often hear iTunes has
no windows.

Do others encounter this problem and if so is there a work around?

Many thanks.

Deleting old calendar entries

2014-06-09 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running Apple Calendar on the latest level of Mac OS. My calendar is held
on GMail so that it can be synchronised with Mac OS, IOS and Android devices.

Is there an easy way to use Apple Calendar to delete all events before a
specified date? My current calendar contains events back to September 2012 and
I would like to delete all events up to say May 2014. this includes repeating
events which have already happened but obviously I want future repeats to still
be in my calendar.

I can clearly do this by deleting each old event one event at a time but this
is pretty tedious! Is there an easier way?

Many thanks.

Will an iPhone 3GS purchesed in the UK work in Canada?

2014-06-08 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I have an iPhone 3GS which works fine in the UK. It is unlocked so that I can
insert any SIM card. I will be visiting Canada later this year. Does the iPhone
3GS support the 1900 MHz band used in Canada and can I use it with a new SIM
card purchased in Canada?
Many thanks.

I have only just looked at this thread so don't know what the earlier posts

I did a podcast on audio editing with amadeus a couple of years ago and posted

Re: How to delete photos from my iPhone

2014-05-24 Thread Paul Hopewell
 inserted
into an iPad Camera Connection Kit, but I don’t think this will be the
solution to move your friend’s photos from her PC, for reasons of both
organization and accessibility. With the first generation iPad, the iPad
Camera Connection Kit accessory provided some really interesting features
that were not possible with either the iPhone or the iPod Touch. These
included the ability to connect USB devices using one of the adapters in the
iPad Camera Connection Kit, which was a 30-pin to USB adapter plug, and also
to transfer photos using a second Camera Connection Kit adapter, which was a
30-pin plug with a slot for inserting an SD card. Most of the really
exciting possibilities came from using the USB adapter plug — it was clearly
designed so people would be able to use the iPad to connect to devices for
audio input and composition, like Midi players, unpowered USB microphones,
etc. I was able to plug in a Griffin iMic into the USB connector and record
directly from my tape player into the Voxie Pro Recorder app. In the first
iOS release, I was even able to connect a USB keyboard into the connector and
use it with VoiceOver navigation in place of the Apple Wireless Keyboard, and
to connect a USB card reader, which I don’t think you can do any more.

However, the limitation on using the SD card and the USB card reader is that
the only file types that are recognized by the iPad are camera type image
files like jpegs or video files. And there was no file structure preserved
in the form of folder organization. The only application that could transfer
these files was the Photos app, and apart from the problems of being able to
distinguish photos via labels with VoiceOver, about the only thing you could
do would be to select all the images and transfer them — or else navigate
through a long set of images to select individual items. I don’t even
remember whether you could do that with VoiceOver. The situation is similar
to being able to use the “open in” function for apps on your device. In
order to be able to open files in particular apps on your iPhone, the file
type must be recognized and supported under the operating system, and the
capability to “Open in” that application must be written into that app. It
initially was not possible to transfer eBooks directly to your device without
using iTunes Sync. Using email attachments and DropBox to move these files
were features that were added in later.

There are equivalent connectors to the two that were part of the iPad Camera
Connection Kit for 30-pin connectors for the current generation of iOS
devices that use lightning connectors, and each can be separately purchased.
I have no familiarity with using these connectors. However, the basic
limitations of the transfer mechanism are likely to be the same, along with
any of the issues of VoiceOver accessibility in identifying and selecting
 files in the Photos app.

If you can locate an accessible photo transfer app, that might be a way to
proceed. The only way I’ve handled moving files to an iOS device for someone
who needs direct transfer of their own files from a Mac computer is to create
a separate user account with a separate iTunes.

Sorry not to have a better answer for you. HTH. Cheers,

 Esther

Giving meaningful titles to photos

How to delete photos from my iPhone

2014-05-22 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
If I look in the photos app on my iPhone 3gs (latest level of IOS 6) I see
several folders which each contain several JPG files.
I would ideally like to delete some of the folders but if that cannot be done

How do I delete photos?

Transfering photos to an iPad

2014-05-21 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I need to help a friend transfer about 100 photos from a Windows Notebook
computer to her iPad. We can use a memory stick to transfer the photos, each
with a suitable title, to a folder on my iMac but what then? The transfer to
the iPad would have to be done in such a way that all the existing iPad content
is preserved and no other data is transferred from my iTunes to the iPad. I am
concerned that a few months ago I connected a different iPad to my iMac which
caused iTunes to regard that iPad as a new iPad and thereby reset its software
level and all its content.

My friend would like the transfer to be local, not involving drop box or
Emails.

this is something I would never normally do so I would much appreciate your
advice.

When the photos are on the iPad how can my friend find a photo by its title and
view that photo?

Many thanks for your help.

Screen curtain on iPhone

2014-05-10 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am concerned about battery life on my ageing iPhone 3GS running the latest
level of IOS 6 (IOS 7 does not work on the 3GS).
I know that reducing screen brightness increases battery life. If I set screen
curtain on does that have the same effect as setting screen brightness to 0? If
I set brightness to say 40% and normally run with screen curtain on I can
easily toggle screen curtain off to show the phone content to a sighted person.
However if normally setting screen curtain on in this scenario does not improve
battery life then there is no point in doing this. Instead I would have to run
with screen brightness normally set to 0 and to remember to temporarily
increase screen brightness to show the phone to a sighted person.
Many thanks.

Playback Controls on iPod Nano G6

2014-05-09 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
Does anyone know how to access the playback controls on an iPod Nano G6 using
VoiceOver? These controls let you change the playback speed, go back 30
seconds, display and modify the track position and so on.

If you do a 2 finger swipe right while a music track is playing you hear album
art double tap for playback controls. Alas doing the double tap anywhere on
the screen does not bring up the playback controls.

However from time to time I do get to these controls by accident. I don't know
what I do to achieve this.

Any tips would be much appreciated.
Many thanks.

bbc iplayer radio app

2014-04-23 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
Have any of you had success with the new bbc iplayer radio app for IOS devices?
I used to use the standard bbc iplayer app which supported both radio and TV
and that worked fine with VoiceOver. However when I tried that a couple of days
ago to access a radio 4 show it told me that radio is now accessed via the new
bbc iplayer radio app, and is no longer supported by the standard bbc iplayer
app.

SO I installed the bbc iplayer radio app on my iPhone 3GS running the latest
IOS 6 but could not work out how to access radio 4. The app displayed several
buttons for different radio stations, which did not include radio 4, plus a
message to scroll for more stations. I tried all the gestures to do the scroll
I could think of but none of them worked.

Many thanks for any tips. For me the new app is much worse than the old app!

Best regards

Gesture for slide to stop

2014-03-18 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running the latest IOS 6 on my iPhone 3GS.

One of my favourite apps has a button which VO voices as slide to stop. Is
there a gesture which will achieve this? I have tried double tapping and
flicking in all directions with 1 finger and with 2 fingers but to no effect.
the only way I can stop the app is to go to the app switcher and use the
gesture to kill the app there.

Many thanks for any tips

Bookmarks on iPad

2014-03-10 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am setting up an iPad for a friend. I am familiar with the iPhone but not the
iPad.

the iPad has a bookmark in Safari which gives access to the iPad User Guide. I
have created a Books folder on the iPad home screen containing ibooks. I would
like to move the Safari bookmark for the iPad User Guide into my Books folder
so that my friend sees it just like another book. Is that possible?

I can foresee other cases where it would be useful to move selected Safari
bookmarks into folders on the home screen. Is that possible?

Many thanks.

How to handle invalid certificate from Email server

get iPlayer Automator article

2014-02-10 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello All,
As several folks have expressed interest in this article I have pasted it into
this Email. It is not that long!

You can download it free
from
http://tom-tech.com/iplayer_automator/iPlayer_Automator/Get_iPlayer_Automator.html.

You then
just need to be patent and wait for the Search For Shows edit box to become
available.

Re: help with BBC iPlayer

2014-02-09 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hi Trevor,
I use the free application get iplayer automator to view BBC and ITV TV
programs on my iMac. You can use this to download radio and TV programs which
you select by entering some words which might appear in the program title.
After they have been downloaded you can play the programs via iTunes or
transfer them to an iPhone or iPod.
If you are interested in this approach please contact me off list and I can
then Email you an article I recently wrote on how to use this application.

Please note that you will have to google get iplayer automator as it is not in
the app store.

Strange problem with Apple mail and gmail imap

2014-02-04 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running Mac OS 10.9.1 with Apple mail and gmail imap.

I also have my iPhone 3GS running the latest level of IOS 6 accessing the same
gmail imap account.

It all works fine except that when I am creating a new message in Apple mail I
get dozens of copies of the new message in my trash folder on the gmail server.
It seems that every press of the delete key creates a new copy of the message
being created. this all takes up space and communication bandwidth and so is
bad.

Do any others have this problem? If so do you know why it is happening and
what, if anything, I can do about it?

this problem never happened with Mountain Lion.

Many thanks.

cocktail automation question

2014-01-29 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I have a 2009 iMac running Mac OS 10.9.1. I have a single user logon which is
password protected.

I want to automate Cocktail so that it starts up at say 07:30 every day. So I
went to system preferences and energy saver and tried to set options so that my
iMac would automatically awake from sleep at 07:00 so that Cocktail could run
at 07:30. However looking at the Cocktail log it does not seem to have been
started.

So two questions

1. Does my 2009 iMac support automatic start-up / wake -up at a specified time,
or is that only available on more recent models?

2. If my iMac does support automatic start-up / wake-up then what happens about
the logon password?

Many thanks

Cocktail question

2014-01-28 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I have used Cocktail for ages but have not yet used the pilot option on a daily
basis via the scheduler as suggested by Dane.

When I run pilot manually the restore disk permissions function seems to take a
long time. Rather than have that happen daily I would like it to only happen
say monthly. Is it possible to configure the Cocktail scheduler so that restore
permissions only happens on the first day of each month, while all the other
pilot actions happen daily or weekly as appropriate.

Many thanks.

Re: Calendar alerts in Mavericks

2014-01-16 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello Brian,
Many thanks for the below. I saw the custom option as you describe but never
thought of trying it. the custom options you describe will solve my problem.

Best regards

Paul Hopewell
Hi Paul — I’m not particularly happy with some of the changes in Mavericks
Calendar, but I’m able to modify alerts using the following steps. Note that
none of my calendar events are google-based, so I’ can’t speak to possible
differences in behavior that might be related to google calendar events
viewed in Calendar.app. Also, while I do have several google mail accounts, I
use my me.com account for email alerts in Calendar.
 1. Highlight the existing event in Calendar.
 2. Press Cmd+i to open the Inspector.
 3. Navigate to the existing alert(s).
 4. Press VO+Spacebar to activate the alert’s popup button.
 5. Scroll to the bottom of the popup list and select Custom.
 6. Here I am presented with the following list of choices: Message, Message
with sound, email, or Open File. Selecting one of these provides additional
 options depending on context.
 7. Make the desired changes and press OK to save them.

 Bryan

I inherited most of my calendar from Mountain Lion where I could easily set
the type of alert e.g. Email, message, or none and the time of the alert.
these previously set alerts all work OK on Mavericks but I cannot work out
how to modify an existing alert.

I can, for example, change an Email alert 10 minutes before the event to a
message alert, but then cannot change that back to an Email alert.

Calendar alerts in Mavericks

2014-01-15 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
Does anyone understand how to set/modify calendar alerts in Mavericks using
VoiceOver?

I inherited most of my calendar from Mountain Lion where I could easily set the
type of alert e.g. Email, message, or none and the time of the alert. these
previously set alerts all work OK on Mavericks but I cannot work out how to
modify an existing alert.

I can, for example, change an Email alert 10 minutes before the event to a
message alert, but then cannot change that back to an Email alert.

It may be relevant that my calendar is on gmail.

Many thanks.

Tips for using iBooks on iMac with VoiceOver

2014-01-08 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
does anyone have any tips on the best way to read iBooks under Mac OS 10.9.1
using VoiceOver? Are any of the iBook preferences especially suitable for
reading with VoiceOver?

I can locate and open books OK and can move to and read next and prior pages
and chapters.

But I have not yet worked out how to do the following:

- Stop reading now, turn off my iMac, start my iMac tomorrow and carry on
reading from where I left off.

- Stop reading now, go to the overall table of contents, and start reading
somewhere else. When I press Command+T to get to the table of contents it seems
to be a mini-table just for the current chapter rather than the entire book. If
I try to interact with the table it goes away.

I also have iBooks on my iPhone 3GS under IOS 6 latest version. I would like to
be able to stop reading now on my iMac and later go to my iPhone and start
reading where I left off on my iMac (and vice versa). I understand that this is
possible but it is not yet obvious how to do it.

Many thanks for any tips.

Anyone successfully using iBooks on Maverick?

2014-01-08 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
Is anyone successfully using iBooks on Maverick with VoiceOver? Or is iBooks on
Maverick not yet fully accessible?

First I have just opened a newly purchased iBook on Maverick and find that the
scroll area contains 4 html files each corresponding to different parts of the
book. I do not understand what is going on here. Opening a different book only
has 3 html files in the scroll area.

Second if I press command+t to open the table of contents I see a new window
containing a table (I know it is a new window because I see it in the list of
windows displayed by VO+F2). Unfortunately if I interact with that table the
table goes away and the window containing that table closes. the same thing
happens if I look at bookmarks.

I mostly want to access the table of contents and use that to go to a desired
section of the book. I also want to stop reading the book now and later return
to where I left off. Is this possible on Maverick?

Fortunately iBooks works much better on my iPhone 3GS under IOS 6.

Should I expect iBooks to work OK with VoiceOver on Maverick? If so what am I
doing wrong?

Many thanks.

Hello,
I think the problem arises because all the rows in my spreadsheet are
considered header rows. Not sure how that happened but tinkering with the

Apple TV capabilities

2014-01-06 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am contemplating buying Apple TV but am not clear on exactly what it does. I
have a wireless router in my home. I have an iMac running Mac OS 10.9.1 in my
upstairs office and a basic TV with an HDMI slot to connect to Apple TV in my
downstairs lounge. I have an iPhone 3GS. I use VoiceOVER everywhere.

I understand that Apple TV will let me play TV programs which are in iTunes on
my iMac on my lounge TV using the wireless router to link the iMac to the Apple
TV. I understand that I can control all this using VoiceOver with an App on my
iPhone 3GS. Is this all correct?

I further understand that I can use Apple TV to stream live TV via my internet
connection and that I can control that through the iPhone App using VoiceOver.
Is that correct?

Will Apple TV do anything with audio description on live TV programs accessed
via my internet connection?

Can Apple TV play TV programs which are on a USB memory stick? Does the Apple
TV have a USB slot or will I have to transfer the TV programs from the USB
memory stick into iTunes on my iMac and then access them via Apple TV?

We have recently acquired a Sansung smart TV for our loft which connects to the
Internet, has a USB slot for playing TV or photos on a USB memory stick, and
supports audio description on live TV via the TV ariel. I am wondering if Apple
TV will essentially convert my non-smart lounge TV into a smart TV. I am also
wondering if I can control the Sansung smart TV via VoiceOver using an
appropriate App on my iPhone.

Many thanks in advance for any tips.
Happy New Year to all!

Qufestion about iCloud mail

2013-12-18 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I have just created an iCloud mail account hopewe...@icloud.com which I want to
access via Apple mail using imap.

I would like outbound mail from this account to look as if it came from
hopew...@hopewell.org.uk as that is the address by which I am generally known.
Is it possible to do this? I tried setting up the Apple mail account
information with Email address of hopew...@hopewell.org.uk but outbound mail is
still labeled as if it came from hopewe...@icloud.com.

I see that iCloud has an alias facility. Would that help with the above
problem?

Many thanks.

VoiceOver going mute on Mac OS

2013-12-16 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running Mac OS 10.9 on my 2009 iMac.

Sometimes VO refuses to speak after my iMac has been awaken after several hours
asleep. Pressing command+F5 does not help so I have to power-off and then
power-on again to restore VO.
I recall reading in this forum that you can often recover VO by quickly
pressing command+F5 several times but I cannot remember how many times and
whether I have to wait a bit after the requisite number of presses before VO
will start speaking again.
I would appreciate any guidance on how to restart VO on Mac OS if VO goes mute.
Many thanks

Removing Mac specific files from a USB memory stick

2013-12-11 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I recall recently reading on this forum information about a Mac OS App which
deleted all those Mac OS specific files which Mac OS creates when you use it to
write data to a USB memory stick. If you then plug this memory stick into a
Windows computer you see several folders / files whose names begin with a
period. This is very confusing to Windows users so I would like an easy way to
get rid of these files.

Can someone please remind me what App does this clean up and where I can get
it.

Reset NVRAM on Mac OS startup

2013-12-06 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,,
I recall recently reading in this forum that it is a good idea to reset NVRAM
from time to time by pressing Option + Command + P + R during Mac OS startup.

What does this actually do? Is it at all a risky thing to do? I have upgraded
my 2009 iMac through each level of Mac OS from Leopard to Maverick and have
never reset NVRAM. My iMac behaves pretty well most of the time but
occasionally VoiceOver refuses to start after Mac OS has been in sleep mode for
a while. Would reset NVRAM help with this?

Many thanks.

iCloud on iMac under Maverick

2013-12-05 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I have a 2009 iMac which I have upgraded from Leopard to Maverick as each
released became available.

I want to try using Email via the cloud and so went to System Preferences and
iCloud. I signed on using my Apple ID and saw that iCloud was enabled for
calendar and contacts and documents but not for mail or notes. This was all
inherited from the past.

SO I checked the mail check box. VO then said loading. I waited half an hour
and it still said loading. SO it looks like it is stuck.

What should happen? Can I do anything to resolve this problem other than a
clean install of Maverick and then re-install of all my Apps which looks like a
lot of work and looks risky.

Many thanks for any tips.

Calendar question

2013-12-05 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,m
I am running the latest Maverick on my 2009 iMac. I have my calendar set up to
link to google calendar so that I can share it with my iPhone 3GS and my wife's
Android phone.

this all works well except that if I delete a single occurrence of a repeated
event I still get the notification of that event some 10 minutes before the
event even though the event has been deleted.

Any thoughts on why this happens and on what I can do about it?

Many thanks.

the viber app on iPhone

2013-11-29 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
Do any listers use the viber app on your iPhone? This app runs on IOS and
Android and lets mobile phones running viber communicate with each other for
free via wifi and the Internet.

I am trying to use viber to communicate with a contact in the USA. I was given
their number in the format +1-aaa--ccc. I put this in my contacts on my
iMac running Maverick and then synced this to contacts on my iPhone 3GS running
the latest IOS 6 .

After entering +1-aaa--ccc on my iMac and then later looking at the
contacts entry I noted that it had been reformatted as +1 (aaa) bbb-bccc. Alas
viber does not seem to recognise this as a valid viber number. It seems that
this number reformatting only happens with numbers beginning +1.

My wife can use her viber on her Android to communicate with this USA number
with no problems.

Can anyone caste any light on this?

Many thanks.

Adding titles to music tracks on Mac OS

2013-11-18 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running the latest version of Mavericks on my iMac.

I have several albums in my iTunes music library with a known artist but
unknown song titles, mostly classical piano pieces.

I recall reading somewhere that there is a service whereby you can submit and
unknown track which the service compares with its extensive music library and
with luck works out the correct title for the track.

Does anyone know of such a service?

Many thanks.

Junk mail on Mavericks

2013-11-14 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running the latest version of Apple mail on Mavericks.

I want to disable junk mail - that is have junk mail treated like ordinary mail
and added to my inbox- but have not been able to do this. I went to mail
preferences and turned junk mail filtering off but that make no difference.
Junk mail is still put in the junk mail mail box. I then turned junk mail
filtering back on and asked that junk mail be marked as junk and put in my
inbox. Again this made no difference the junk mail was still added to the junk
mail mail box.

So how can I disable junk mail filtering?

If I cannot do this is there any way to mark junk mail as not junk so that mail
from that sender is no longer treated as junk?

Many thanks.

Using Safari on Mavericks to change gmail settings

2013-11-11 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running Safari under VoiceOver on the latest version of Mac OS 10.9
(Mavericiks).

In the past I used to go to mail.google.com/mail/h to get the basic html
interface into gmail.

The above still works as it used to if I uswe lightning or chrome on Mavericks
but not if I use Safari. If I use Safari and go to mail.google.com/mail/h I get
into my inbox. If I stop interacting with that I get into the standard gmail
interface with all its collapsed sections and buttons and canot work out how to
use that to modify my gmail settings.

I tried resetting Safari but that did not help.

The problem is possibly all due to cookies but how do I find and delete
undesirable gmail cookies?

I would welcome any tips.

Many thanks.

Trash folder on Gmail under Mavericks

2013-11-10 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running Mavericks with the recent update to Apple mail.
My mail server is gmail and is set up as imap .

When I look at the trash mail folder on my iMac I see lots of copies of each
message I have been composing. A copy seems to be taken each time I press the
delete key and / or the backspace key. If I look on my iPhone I also see all
these message copies in the trash folder so they must be stored in the trash
folder on the gmail server.

Taking all these copies clearly consumes communication bandwidth and iMac and
gmail storage space. that is bad.

I have searched google for information on gmail and Mavericks and am now
thoroughly confused! SO far I have not seen any information on multiple copies
of messages which I am composing. Pressing the delete key on a message in the
mail inbox or any other folder will move that message to the trash folder which
is to be expected. Could there be an Apple mail bug such that pressing the
delete key to edit a message I am composing also moves that to the trash
folder?

Can anyone cast any light on this?

Best regards

Question about mail on Mavericks

2013-11-09 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running the latest version of Apple mail on Mavericks.

When I look inside my trash folder I see lots of copies of messages I have been
composing. It seems like a copy is taken each time I correct the message I am

keystrokes.

Is there any way I can stop this? I have looked in mail preferences and there
is nothing obvious.

Re: Problem with VMWare fusion on Mavericks

Hello Esther,
You are a marvel! Many thanks for the attached. I tried your suggestion of
setting the fusion network adapter to automatic and that fixed my problem of
fusion 5 on Mavericks not connecting to the Internet.
My Windows 7 virtual machine takes a long time to boot up but then it works

time.
So many many thanks for the attached and also for your help to access mouse

Can a sighted lister please look at a web site

2013-11-06 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
Can a sighted lister please look at www.harmonise.us. Go to the link words
and music. There is supposed to be a drop down list of around 20 songs . You
are supposed to find the desired song and activate its link to get its words.

Using VoiceOver with Safari or Chrome on Mavericks I can only see a single song
Buttermilk Hill.

Can you see links to multiple songs and if so can you see why VoiceOver only
sees a single link? Is there anything I can do about this?

Note that I am using DOM mode. WOuld group mode help?

Many thanks.

Disabling notifications on IOS 6

2013-11-03 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running the latest level of IOS 6 on my iPhone 3GS which does not support
IOS 7.

How do I get rid of all notifications except those for calendar events which
are about to happen and for inbound text messages?

I have looked at the notifications in settings and have used drag and drop to
move annoying notifications for BBC News and Pedometer to not in
notifications center and have turned alerts and sounds off. However these
notifications still pop up, at least on Sunday mornings, and really annoyingly
the BBC News notification makes a noise.

I believe that if I have alerts on for an app then I have to take action if
that app triggers a notification. that is what I want for pending calendar
events but not for any other app. For all the other apps I ideally want no
notifications at all, or if this is not possible I want no notification sounds.

Any tips on how to set this up?

Many thanks.

Having problems installing Maverick

2013-10-24 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am having problems installing Maverick on my 2009 iMac model.

I went to App store and pressed the free upgrade button. That downloaded about
5 GB. On download completion I was asked to agree the licence which I did. I
was then asked to select the disk on which to install Maverick.

I normally have 2 disks Mac HD which is the hard disk inside the iMac and an
external disk Mac Backup which I use for time machine backups and SuperDuper!
backups.

Before trying to install Maverick I unplugged Mac Backup. I did that in case
the install of Maverick damaged the SuperDuper! backup I had just taken to
rescue my system if Maverick proved troublesome.

The choice of disks offered by Maverick was thus only Mac HD but this was
dimmed as it was flagged as used for time machine backups which is not true!

So I could not install Maverick.

I then plugged in Mac Backup so that Maverick install had the choice of two
disks. It did not like Mac Backup as it claimed that this had no guide
partition, and it did not like Mac HD as it still thought that this was used
for time machine backups.

Any thoughts on what I should do? Should I perhaps plug Mac Backup in again and
retry the Maverick download and install?

Best regards
