Once again, I must point out that DocuScan only handles English. If you use any
other language, this solution is not for you. Please remember that this list is
international!

Re: Looking for an accessible audio converter

2011-09-05 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Hi. I was looking for the audio converter called Max in the app store, but I
don't see it there.
Is this the one which sells for $60 or is Amadeus the one which sells for $60.
I know that one does, but I can't tell from the below message if he is talking
about Max or Amadeus when he talks about the $60 and a trial version.
I downloaded Max from their site making sure I had the stable version.
Thanks.

Re: Scanners and OCR

2011-09-05 Thread David Tanner
Your best and most accessible scanning choice for the price is DocuScan
Plus. You can download a trial version from the App Store and register it
for a 7 day trial period. The price is $299 and gives you both the Apple
version and the QWindows version too, if you need it. It works well with
VoiceOver, is simple to use, has lots of power features for all kinds of
scanning, recognizing PDF files, and converting scanned text to RTF, TXT,
create MP3 file of the text, saving as a formated Braille file, and turn
scaned text into a Daisy book.

It can be used with a variety of scanners or you can purchase the HoverCam
digital camera that can be purchased along with the software from Sero Tech.

Subject: Scanners and OCR

Hello all,

Would like to get some advice on using scanners with a Mac (running Lion if
this is relevant). I occasionally need to scan printed documents to send by
email or for archival purposes. Does Mac OS have its own utility or app for
working with a scanner or are we reliant upon manufacturer's own
drivers/software (which, from past experience on Windows, is very hit and
miss as far as accessibility is concerned).

Also, what experience do people have of scanning a document and using OCR to
get VoiceOver (or whatever) to read out the contents of the document?

Cheers,

Mark

Good luck with that one! I have tried, with no luck. You can get to those
various things you mentioned by just hitting windows key B. This will bring
things up in your system tray, and your time and date are in this list also.

Re: 2 or 4 gigs, what should I choose?

2011-09-05 Thread Garry Turkington
If you weren't planning to use Fusion I'd say the 2GB new machine is
the best bet.

Unfortunately running Fusion means you need share the 2GB between both
OS X and Windows and with only 2GB you'll run out of memory very
quickly. At this point the system starts using the hard drive as
virtual memory but this is massively slower.

But I'd also be reticent about the older Mini as the step-up in
processor architecture between the 2009 and current models is very
significant.

If you could budget a memory upgrade in say the next year I'd say go
for the new model with 2GB and accept things may be a little sluggish
at times until the upgrade. Or use Bootcamp.

Hi Anouk,

I think you mean Flip4Mac by Telestream, who took over supporting the Windows Media Player plug-in for QuickTime
Player after MicroSoft stopped doing this. Two thoughts: 1) starting with Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6), QuickTime
Player was no longer part of the default installation. It will be on systems that upgraded from Leopard, but
otherwise requires either installing from the Snow Leopard DVD (for Snow Leopard users), or direct download of a
compatible version. 2) I've heard that the latest version of Flip4Mac, which is dated February 2011 for the
default free version, is not fully Lion compatible. This is based on both reports from sites that report on Lion
compatibility of apps, like and posts on the Apple Support forums that some
previously working web pages for streams no longer work after the upgrade to Lion. There is supposed to be a
version 2.4 that will be released soon, but the last query of how likely "soon" was came at the end of
August. You can try this out for yourself, if you want to check this out, or you can search the Telestream support
forums for more details and links to possible interim beta releases that might work. Note the spelling of
"Flip4Mac" as one word with the number "4" in the middle.

In the meantime, here's the link to the Apple Knowledge Base article on "Installing
QuickTime Player 7 on Mac OS X v10.6 or Later":
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3678

Another thing you could try is downloading the trial of radium, described in earlier posts, and
check whether the available streams when you type in "nederland" into the search field
contain any of the content you are looking for. Google "radium macupdate" to find a the
link to the web page and trial download. The Mac App Store has this app, but doesn't support
things like free trial downloads, so you could only purchase the app there (for $25).

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Running a Mac with Windows on

2011-09-05 Thread William Windels
Hello all,
I had not that good experiences wit xp with vmware
because xp is so slow on a macbook with 4gb of ram and each os has 2 gb of ram.
It's also difficult to use usb devices on virtual windows after i have used
them on the mac like a braille display.
You have to release the device in osx before you can use it on windows. Or
revers.
Also, after setting windows in suspend mode, the screenreader and other
usb-devices like described above, are doing so strange.
With version 2.5 of vmware , I discovered more times that the scripts to
restart the virtual machine where broken so that I couldn't shutdown or restart
windows properly.

I discovered also that windows on a virtual machine was much mor slower than a
native boot on a slower laptop.
Again , what's the good memory management between vmware and mac?

Because of all that litle frustrations, I was discouraged to use windows in a
virtual machine but perhaps no, it's better and I should give it a try again.

Mvg

Hello,
I like the full disk Encryption in OS X 7. However, I also wish the end user
could set it to 256 bit encryption instead of just 128 bit.
Just my thoughts.

Re: listening to embedded audio streams on mac

2011-09-05 Thread anouk radix

Hey Esther! Glad to see that you are still around these days!
Thank you so much! This was indeed the program I was looking for but
could not get the name anymore. I will try installing quicktime and
flip4mac and hopefully soon there will be a software update that will
make it work again.

Thanks again for the help!
Greetings, Anouk,

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

2011-09-05 Thread anouk radix

Hi,
Normally I let my systems start up automatically with noi password at
all but now with my new mac I have indeed setup a startup password AND
encryption. After a few minutes of non-use I have to enter that password
again. I feel very secure now even takingmy laptop along to other
locations and leaving it alone for a while.
What I like about the boot up process AFTER your drive is encrypted is,
that if you enter cmd+f5 you will hear a beep when your computer is
ready for input, you then hear a beep if its right and another beep if
it is wrong, also this goes for the password. Just experiment with it
for yourself its very niftily done.
I havent heard of anything like this being possible on a windows system
and while I did not use it before i got my mba, i like it a lot and it
makes me feel a lot more secure.

It just doesn't get in the way. Of course, if your full disk is encrypted, only

have voiceover at the login prompt. The prompt now comes very quickly, and the

bar [and I suppose in Lion as well] just interact with it!
and after you chose your selection it will do one of two things!
Either put you into the next window or you might have to stop interacting to
get to the next window!
Now if you choose to check spelling when you press send, you will be put into
the spell check window, in there are different options for you to use just
arrow across to use the option you need for that word, one of the options is a
table of results this will tell you before opening either no results or if
there is just one that will be already selected and if it is the right one just
go back to the change button and press it!
And spell check will go to the next misspelled word if there is one!
If the table of results says no selection then just interact with it and arrow
down through the choices and find the one you need!
Then whilst on it stop interacting and go to the change button again!
If there is no suggestions at all, go to the field where the misspelled word is
and interact with it and try another version of the word [even if you do not
know how it should be spelt] then press enter and stop interacting and see if
the results table has changed!
After the table of results are other options like add or define! [ just have a
look around to see what's there ]
And finally when you finish the last word the message will go! :]
Also from another thread here is a link to a podcast from vision Australia

These podcasts are very good!

Re: continuous reading in pages

2011-09-05 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Ahmed,

Continuous reading is not an option in Pages. If you wish to read an MS Word
document straight through, you'd be better off using TextEdit.

To force TextEdit to read the document, select the document and press
VO-Shift-M then VO down to Open With and go right one then type the letteres T
followed by E which should find TextEdit. Press Return and you'll be in
TextEdit.

Re: 2 or 4 gigs, what should I choose?

2011-09-05 Thread Braille
If you run Lion, I would strongly suggest that you would get 4GB or higher.
Apple quietly moved its default Kernel to 64 bit on Lion and this makes the
same Kernel on Lion to use more memory when compared to SL. On SL, you had to
manually make it to boot 64. Other wise, it was 32 bit by default.

On my machine running Lion, right after boot up, about 2.5 GB of ram is being
utilized. With Safari, Mail, and Ical, it goes to 3.5Gb. Then, page ins and
outs are frequently occurring when I had only 4GB of ram. With Fusion running,
I usually tops out my 8GB and then the system uses virtual memory, which
significantly slows down the system.

Do you perhaps mean ClickToPlugin?
By using this I am able to control streams, podcasts, flash movies etc.

It is voice over. I have written set of scripts that move down the menubar and
you can find dropbox and others.

Re: listening to embedded audio streams on mac

2011-09-05 Thread Esther
Hi Anouk,

I think you mean Flip4Mac by Telestream, who took over supporting the Windows
Media Player plug-in for QuickTime Player after MicroSoft stopped doing this.
Two thoughts: 1) starting with Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6), QuickTime Player was
no longer part of the default installation. It will be on systems that
upgraded from Leopard, but otherwise requires either installing from the Snow
Leopard DVD (for Snow Leopard users), or direct download of a compatible
version. 2) I've heard that the latest version of Flip4Mac, which is dated
February 2011 for the default free version, is not fully Lion compatible. This
is based on both reports from sites that report on Lion compatibility of apps,
like and posts on the Apple Support forums that some
previously working web pages for streams no longer work after the upgrade to
Lion. There is supposed to be a version 2.4 that will be released soon, but the
last query of how likely "soon" was came at the end of August. You can try
this out for yourself, if you want to check this out, or you can search the
Telestream support forums for more details and links to possible interim beta
releases that might work. Note the spelling of "Flip4Mac" as one word with the
number "4" in the middle.

In the meantime, here's the link to the Apple Knowledge Base article on
"Installing QuickTime Player 7 on Mac OS X v10.6 or Later":
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3678

Another thing you could try is downloading the trial of radium, described in
earlier posts, and check whether the available streams when you type in
"nederland" into the search field contain any of the content you are looking
for. Google "radium macupdate" to find a the link to the web page and trial
download. The Mac App Store has this app, but doesn't support things like free
trial downloads, so you could only purchase the app there (for $25).

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: jaws loosing activations in VMWare fusion?

2011-09-05 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Chris,

I am new at VM Fusion. I read some of the documentation recently. In,
I believe, the getting started area it mentioned that if you use the bootcamp
partition and then go back to the VM partition you will need to reactivate
Windows. I suspect this may also be the Case for JAWS. I'm probably about to
face the same problem you have had as I just used my last license to set up
bootcamp. Now I have a virtual machine and it wants me to reauthorize jaws. I
fear that if I do that and then start fusion or Bootcamp incorrectly I will
have the same problem.

I want to ditch my bootcamp partition and just us use the virtual machine but
I'm not sure how to do that. I'd rather not re install everything again.

I hope another user who moved from pot camp to virtual Machine only can help us
out!

2011-09-05 Thread Maurice Mines
Hello list, here's what has worked for me to solve the activations problem in
VMware fusion. What I did was I took a snapshot of my currently running virtual
machine just after I activated it. Now what I have is a perfectly running
virtual machine that has job activated in it. I have put this in a separate
place a.k.a. even a separate drive from the running drive would've on my
machine. So if I happen to have any problems in the future. All I have to do is
take my backed up image a.k.a. my snapshot file and restore to where the
virtual machine should be running. I hope this suggestion helps. Note if you
have to machines, you will have to do an activation per machine and repeat this
process with each machine. I hope this suggestion helped you out. Note this

Accessibility of applications on the menu bar

2011-09-05 Thread Victor Tsaran
Hello all,
Some applications ,like Dropbox and a newly-discovered Tunesque,
http://tunesque.afkstudio.com/, place themselves in the menu bar. However, they
seem to be completely inaccessible to VoiceOver.
The question is, are these the applications to blame or is it VoiceOver that
does not deal with them properly? It is really difficult to assess the level of
their accessibility because all you get is "xxx has no windows" message when
trying to inspect them.

Any thoughts?

Re: 2 or 4 gigs, what should I choose?

2011-09-05 Thread Scott Howell
Honestly it will all come down to performance. SOmetimes a slower machine with
more ram will out perform a faster machine but it is also relative. If the
slower machine is a 2.3Ghz processor and the faster machine is 3.5Ghz, you may
not notice so much. Really it comes down to what you are doing. If you are
doing a lot of processor intensive tasks, more speed might be preferred, but
then you have to take into consideration a number of factors. You can always
upgrade a machine with more ram and at a reasonable price. Purchase what you
can afford and look to upgrade as soon as you are able.

Re: How do I upgrade to Lion?

2011-09-05 Thread Scott Howell
I would recommend that you learn Snow Leopard and then upgrade. However, if you
really feel the need, you only have to purchase the upgrade (unless you are
eligible for the free upgrade), and once you have downloaded the app via the
App store; you just run the program. Make a backup before running it as once
you upgraded, the installer is deleted.

Hi Eric Caron,

Your first question, what to do about a non-existent insert key inside a
virtual machine, is quite a story if you want to know the ins and outs.
Along the way, we will get there. Here you go.

First off, it is true that you have no insert key on the mac, while you
often do need one in windows. You can create a key mapping for yourself in 1
of 2 ways. Either using fusion itself, and there is no real down side as far
as I'm aware, but it is a little trickey to set up because of an interface
issue in fusion. The other way to get an insert key is to use the sharp keys
program. Sharp keys lets you remap a few more keys than fusion will allow.
For example, using sharp keys, you can even remap your right command, or
your right option key, to the windows insert.

If you do it via fusion, then all your virtual machines willl get an insert
key. If you have windows 7 and xp like I do, creating the insert key using
the fusion keyboard remapper creates it for all virtual machines because
fusion only allows you to do it inside its global preferences, command
comma, and not on a per machine basis, command e.

If you create your insert key using sharp keys, then it is going to be a
local setting for that windows installation only, because sharp keys
modifies the windows registry to do the trick. Both methods will give you
the same result: an insert key that is not just insert, but that can be held
down as if it were a modifier key for other keys.

This answers your other issue, where capslock cannot be used inside the
virtual machine as a modifier. It works as a caps lock, but you can't hold
it down and press a letter inside the virtual machine, in order to give
commands to your screen reader. Sharp keys and fusion itself though, will
give you an insert key like the one on a normal windows computer. This lets
you use insert rather than caps lock for your screen reader's commands, so
let's concentrate on insert, and I will leave caps lock for someone else.

Now, let's look at the way you can do it inside fusion. I'm using fusion
3.1.3, which is the latest version as of today. To update, go to the menu
bar in fusion, vo m, then once right, then down to check for updates, and
then follow the instructions.

First, fire up fusion and, just to be certain, have your virtual machines
shut down. Then press command comma to open fusion's global preferences.

At the top of this window is a toolbar. Interact with it and click keyboard
and mouse. A new window will appear.

The first thing you will encounter is a pop up button where you choose your
keyboard and mouse profile. The window itself consists of 4 tab sheets, and
all those settings together are stored in a keyboard and mouse profile. I
don't think we will ever need a second profile, but that's what the button
allows. Leave it at its default.

The first tab sheet of this dialog, named, key mappings, is where you can
swap your windows logo and alt keys. By default, fusion will map your
command key to the windows logo key, and your option key to the windows alt
key. This is not very intuitive for those of us who are used to windows and
its keyboard layout, but it's easy to swap them. See below. In this window,
you will also be able to create your insert key inside fusion, and if you
want, give yourself a num lock toggle as well.

If you look at this table, then many mac keys are mapped to some windows
counterparts. Personally, I don't think that is necessary at all. For
example, in windows, you use control plus c to copy an item to the
clipboard. On the mac, we're used to pressing command plus c to copy. In
fusion, there is a default key mapping that makes command c the equivalent
of control c. In other words, pressing control c or command c in windows
will do the same thing. This is non-standard windows tweaking I don't like,
so what I did to begin with, is clear this entire list. To the right of this
table, you have 2 unlabeled buttons. The left one is add, and the right one
is delete and entry in this table. Just focus on the right button of the 2,
and hit vo space until the list is empty. You will also delete the undesired
alt and windows logo key mappings this way.

Now, you must create your own mappings, so that your mac command key will
become the alt key in windows, and so that your option key can become your
windows logo key inside windows. Here's how to do it.

First, click add, to add a new mapping to the table. This is the left
unlabeled button, to the right of the table. A new window appears, that you
will later close with an ok button to return here.

In the new win

Hi Bill Holton,
Once you have the virtual machine running, minimize windows, control command
enter, turn on voiceover, and in the underlying fusion window, now
containing a minimized version of your running windows, find an item that
reads: cd and dvd. Click it, explore the settings, and try to see what is
wrong. Is the superdrive connected to the virtual machine or not? Are you
perhaps using a disk image that no longer exists?
To close the dvd settings windows, simply use command w. Then find the
progress bar in the fusion window, urn voice over off, and finally maximize
windows again. You should be all set.

Paul.

From: Paul Erkens On the mac, if you need this often, then abbyy fine reader is a
good solution. Its interface has a combobox where you input

and the next combo box lets you decide what to convert it to. It
is that simple, but it does cost 80 dollars. Otherwise, I would

In growl, found via system preferences and then growl, you can set and
further configure a default notification style. One of them is speech. If

programs you use growl with, but you can also configure the growl
notification scheme on a per program basis if you want. By the way, any
new program that supports growl notifications, will automatically be added
to the growl window. This is because growl is always running, and growl
sees which program you are launching. If it happens to be one of those
that it recognizes as being growl compatible, then growl will
automatically add that program name for you in its own window. Which

that's what they did. Fusion works well and is very accessible.

Under Growl display options, should I select speech instead of any visual

Re: more system sound feedback?

2011-09-05 Thread Paul Erkens
Jeff,
You can instruct growl to make a sound. Look in the per program configuration,
but be ware that you must enable the sound for each application in turn. It
involves some repetitive work but I think that's the problem.
To get into the growl configuration window, go to system preferences and find
growl there. You need to click the applications tab, and in the list you find,
highlight the program you want to configure sound for, say Skype or something
else. Then, click configure and go into the second tab sheet of the configure
dialog. The tab is called notifications, and there you enable your sound.

 Tracey,
Let's explain that step by step so you don't get lost.

First off. A disk image is a normal file on your hard drive. If you click
it, os10 will mount it as if it were a normal volume. In other words, just
like when you insert a cd, it gets mounted as an icon on your desktop that
you can open, browse etc, a dmg, once clicked, will mount a new imaginary
 disk on to your desktop.

First thing to do is Click the dmg. It doesn't matter where you have the
dmg. inside downloads is the easiest. if you're new to images then close
everything that pops up till you are in your desktop, and then look around
there. You will find the growl volume on the desktop. Just as you dive
into macintosh hd, into the contents of a cd or an external usb drive, you
open the growl volume the same way. From the desktop, press command down
arrow on the growl volume icon. A new window will open, showing the
contents of the image file that growl sits in.

Once you have the newly mounted volume open, look at the files it
contains. You will hear that the current screen look and feel is set to
image browser, and not to list view or column view. To switch this back to
a normal list view that you can read as normal, just press command and the
number 2 and you will hear, as list view, checked.

Now, explore the contents of the image file. It now looks like any other
folder on the mac. Find the item named growl dot pkg. A pkg file is an
installer bundle. If you click a pkg file, the installer inside it will
run. You can do that now.

Next, follow the instructions in the installer screens. Don't be
distracted by all the unnecessary repetitive information on these screens.
I find these installers terrible, but they are doable. Follow their
instructions until you get a finish or a close button, and the installer
 ends.

Now, you are back n the mounted disk image and growl installation is done.
Now you need to perform a few final steps.

As said, you are now back inside the mounted image volume where you found
the growl dot pkg installer. You came here by pressing command plus down
from the desktop, and you close it again by pressing command w. You will
 land back in your desktop.

Now, unmount the volume where you installed growl from. Find the growl
icon on the desktop and press command e for eject. If you type command e
 on a cd icon on

You could manage with 2Gb; however, I think you will find the experience les
than desirable. I highly recommend you get 4Gb of ram as a minimum. Some
will recommend 8Gb, but you will do fine with 4.

Re: Mac Mail Question

2011-09-05 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi Linda,

If you have 2 mailboxes and you want to easily switch between them, here's how
to do it. If you need more help, let me know.

First, you will want to have both mailboxes in your favorites bar. You can do
this using the new drag and drop procedure in voice over. First, look where the
favorites bar is. Interact with it, and find your way around, so that you later
know where to paste your second mailbox. If you see checkboxes in the favorites
bar, don't worry about them. For this task, they are not important.

If your first mailbox is already in the favorites bar, but your second mailbox
isn't yet, then you will have to drag the second mailbox from the mailboxes
table, over to the favorites bar. The reason you will want both mailboxes to be
in the favorites bar is, that you will later be able to use command plus the
number 1 to get into the first mailbox, and command plus 2 to get into your
second mailbox, as displayed in the favorites bar. Which mailbox will open if
you press command 1 or command 2, depends on the order in which the mailboxes
appear on the favorites bar. So if, for example, your private email account is
first on the favorites bar, and your, say, gmail account is second, then
command 1 wil open your private inbox and command 2 your gmail.
Opening a new mail window etc, like you described, is then no longer necessary.

To drag the second mailbox over to the favorites bar, go to the mailboxes table
and interact with it, put the voiceover cursor on the mailbox you want to drag,
then press v o comma there. This will tell voice over that this is the item you
want to drag elsewhere. Now, move over to the favorites bar and interact with
it, put the v o cursor on the spot just to the right of your first mailbox that
was already there, and then drop the second mailbox using v o plus period. This
will start the drag operation. You will here a mouse down sound, then some soft
whooshes while it's dragging, then a mouse up click, and the second mailbox is
in the favorites bar. Now, the work should be done, if I'm not forgetting
something. It is somewhat more work to get rid of a certain mailbox in the
favorites bar, once you accidentally dragged the wrong one over, so be careful
that you pick the correct mailbox, that you called, your second mailbox.

>From now on, if you press command plus 1, your private email should be
>displayed. Command 2 gives you your other account. You will have to interact

filevault Lion experiences

2011-09-05 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi all,
Just passing on my experience with Lion's file vault. I thought it'd be
difficult but it's not. Carefully read the dialogs and you're all set. No
complicated setup. Encryption takes a while. Only thing you are going to
sacrifice is a voice over supported log in. With encryption enabled, you will
still get audible feedback though, and it is workable. I thought I'd give it a
shot so I backed up securely and turned it on, but I don't think I'll revert
back to normal. I don't notice any speed degradation, though it may be present.
It just doesn't get in the way. Of course, if your full disk is encrypted, only
avery small part of the os can be left unencrypted, so that's why you don't
have voiceover at the login prompt. The prompt now comes very quickly, and the
rest of the os is loaded after you enter valid credentials.

how to continue a draft in lion mail?

2011-09-05 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi list,

I think I found the solution to the question how you can continue working on a
draft, after you quit it.

1. Open mail and begin a new message. Type some text.
2. Now if you want to do something else and continue working on this message
later, you press command w to close this new message window. You will be asked
what to do. Choose: save as draft. Then, quit mail.
3. To continue your draft, fire up mail and open the drafts mailbox, either
from the mailbox table or from the favorites bar.
4. Now find your message. I had 12 drafts before I found out what to do. So
choose the message you want to continue on.
5. Now move over to the text area of the message. You can read it as usual, no
problem. However, Even if you turn quicknav off, even if you press vo space on
the text, even if you press a routing button on your braille display somewhere
over the text, no, the cursor will not appear, so no, you just can't continue
typing.
6. So, after moving to the message text of the draft as in step 5 above, To
open the draft for further editing, just pretend to send it and hit command
shift d. This is the keystroke I normally use to send a written message. On a
locked draft message however, it will not immediately send your message.
Instead, it will open the message for further editing. Hooray. Edit to your
liking, and hit command shift d once more to really send it out.
Hth,
Paul.

Re: more system sound feedback?

2011-09-05 Thread Jeff Berwick
I have set this all up but, Growl never makes a sound. I am wondering if there
are any hidden tricks I need to do to get this working?

I realize this may be difficult for you to identify without investigating my
system but, perhaps somebody else has had this problem and can identify how
they solved it.

Thx,
Jeff

2011-09-05 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi Anouk,
What you can do to access a drive formatted as extended journaled encrypted, is
to make a hole in vmware, by simply sharing the root of the drive on the mac
side. Go to fusion and then into settings, sharing. There, you can designate a
folder or any drive for that matter, to become available inside windows. fusion
will do the data passing between mac and windows ntfs.

However, I don't like the heavy-handedness of NCH when it comes to

Re: more system sound feedback?

2011-09-05 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi Tracey,

In growl, found via system preferences and then growl, you can set and further
configure a default notification style. One of them is speech. If you set that
as the default, then it will automatically be chosen for new programs you use
growl with, . By the way, any new program that supports growl notifications,
will automatically be added to the growl window. This is because growl is
always running, and growl sees which program you are launching. If it happens
to be one of those that it recognizes as being growl compatible, then growl
will automatically add that program name for you in its own window. Which
notification scheme, either one out of the many visual ones, or the speech one,
is chosen, depends on what you set as the default scheme for new programs.
Hth,
Paul.

Re: pdf files to text

2011-09-05 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi May,
On the mac, if you need this often, then abbyy fine reader is a good solution.
Its interface has a combobox where you input where your image is coming from,
so either a scanner or a file, and the next combo box lets you decide what to
convert it to. It is that simple, but it does cost 80 dollars. Otherwise, I
would ask a friend running windows to quickly do it for you, using pdf2txt.
That is quick. On the mac, I don't yet know of a free and easy program to do
just that.

Hth,
Paul.

sending the messages but I just got this mac and I am not the greatest on the

Re: more system sound feedback?

2011-09-05 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi Tracey,

In growl, found via system preferences and then growl, you can set and further
configure a default notification style. One of them is speech. If you set that
as the default, then it will automatically be chosen for new programs you use
growl with, but you can also configure the growl notification scheme on a per
program basis if you want. By the way, any new program that supports growl
notifications, will automatically be added to the growl window. This is because
growl is always running, and growl sees which program you are launching. If it
happens to be one of those that it recognizes as being growl compatible, then
growl will automatically add that program name for you in its own window. Which
notification scheme, either one out of the many visual ones, or the speech one,
is chosen, depends on what you set as the default scheme for new programs.
Hth,

On the mac, I don't yet know of a free and easy program to do
just that.
You could email the pdf to someone running either fine reader on the mac, or
pdf2txt etc on windows, and have the readable document mailed back to you.
Hth,
Paul.

My name is Jenny and I just got a Mac Mini in June. It came with Snow Leopard

step by step way to do that cause I have no idea what I'm doing with this Mac.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Running a Mac with Windows on

2011-09-05 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi Bill Holton,
Once you have the virtual machine running, minimize windows, control command
enter, turn on voiceover, and in the underlying fusion window, now containing a
minimized version of your running windows, find an item that reads: cd and dvd.
Click it, explore the settings, and try to see what is wrong. Is the superdrive
connected to the virtual machine or not? Are you perhaps using a disk image
that no longer exists?
To close the dvd settings windows, simply use command w. Then find the progress
bar in the fusion window, urn voice over off, and finally maximize windows
again. You should be all set.
Hth,
Paul.

Re: Scanners and OCR

2011-09-05 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi, for scan to email most scanner drivers are adequate. Simply try to avoid
using an all in one printer scanner and you will have a button on the front
that scans to a file and attaches it to an email.

The situation regarding scan to OCR using your mac as a reading machine is a
bit unfortunate. There is the eyepal which is very nice in it's way despite
some pitfalls, but is overpriced even after they nocked the price down by about
800 bucks.

Then there is docuscan for about $400 which is OK except that it requires a
cloud and an internet connection to be getting on with. It would be a steel at
400 bucks if the software did the OCr right onboard.

Then there are abby finereader and readiris. Some people love these solutions.
I am not one of them. They are heavily dependent on accessible scanner
software from the manufacturer which as you rightly observed is hit an miss.
They require a daisy chain of 2 to 4 programs for the scan and read process
depending on the combination you choose. And the results of my tests on abby
fine reader with the cannon lide90 were OK generally speaking but much slower
than kurzweil 1000 under windows and not nearly as accurate.

Best,

Re: Running a Mac with Windows on

2011-09-05 Thread Paul Erkens
Eric, Bill, list,
The way to allocate ram to your virtual machine is an easy one this time.
Here's how to allocate ram to your virtual windows machine inside vmware fusion.
1. Fire up fusion. If your virtual windows machine starts up, then shut it
down, but don't command w close its window. The virtual machine should be
visible, after having it shut down, but not running.
2. Now, hit command plus e, to get into the settings for only this virtual
machine.
3. From here, it's easy. Just go to processors and ram, and in there, make sure
you type 2048 in the ram field for your virtual machine. Having 4 gigs in your
mac will give 2 gigabytes to the virtual machine, and the rest to the mac.
That's all.
4. Don't forget to close and save the new setting with command w.

Hth,
Paul.

Re: Running a Mac with Windows on

2011-09-05 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi Eric Caron,

Your first question, what to do about a non-existent insert key inside a
virtual machine, is quite a story if you want to know the ins and outs. Along
the way, we will get there. Here you go.

First off, it is true that you have no insert key on the mac, while you often
do need one in windows. You can create a key mapping for yourself in 1 of 2
ways. Either using fusion itself, and there is no real down side as far as I'm
aware, but it is a little trickey to set up because of an interface issue in
fusion. The other way to get an insert key is to use the sharp keys program.
Sharp keys lets you remap a few more keys than fusion will allow. For example,
using sharp keys, you can even remap your right command, or your right option
key, to the windows insert.

If you do it via fusion, then all your virtual machines willl get an insert
key. If you have windows 7 and xp like I do, creating the insert key using the
fusion keyboard remapper creates it for all virtual machines because fusion
only allows you to do it inside its global preferences, command comma, and not
on a per machine basis, command e.

If you create your insert key using sharp keys, then it is going to be a local
setting for that windows installation only, because sharp keys modifies the
windows registry to do the trick. Both methods will give you the same result:
an insert key that is not just insert, but that can be held down as if it were
a modifier key for other keys.

This answers your other issue, where capslock cannot be used inside the virtual
machine as a modifier. It works as a caps lock, but you can't hold it down and
press a letter inside the virtual machine, in order to give commands to your
screen reader. Sharp keys and fusion itself though, will give you an insert key
like the one on a normal windows computer. This lets you use insert rather than
caps lock for your screen reader's commands, so let's concentrate on insert,
and I will leave caps lock for someone else.

Now, let's look at the way you can do it inside fusion. I'm using fusion 3.1.3,
which is the latest version as of today. To update, go to the menu bar in
fusion, vo m, then once right, then down to check for updates, and then follow
the instructions.

First, fire up fusion and, just to be certain, have your virtual machines shut
down. Then press command comma to open fusion's global preferences.

At the top of this window is a toolbar. Interact with it and click keyboard and
mouse. A new window will appear.

The first thing you will encounter is a pop up button where you choose your
keyboard and mouse profile. The window itself consists of 4 tab sheets, and all
those settings together are stored in a keyboard and mouse profile. I don't
think we will ever need a second profile, but that's what the button allows.
Leave it at its default.

The first tab sheet of this dialog, named, key mappings, is where you can swap
your windows logo and alt keys. By default, fusion will map your command key to
the windows logo key, and your option key to the windows alt key. This is not
very intuitive for those of us who are used to windows and its keyboard layout,
but it's easy to swap them. See below. In this window, you will also be able to
create your insert key inside fusion, and if you want, give yourself a num lock
toggle as well.

If you look at this table, then many mac keys are mapped to some windows
counterparts. Personally, I don't think that is necessary at all. For example,
in windows, you use control plus c to copy an item to the clipboard. On the
mac, we're used to pressing command plus c to copy. In fusion, there is a
default key mapping that makes command c the equivalent of control c. In other
words, pressing control c or command c in windows will do the same thing. This
is non-standard windows tweaking I don't like, so what I did to begin with, is
clear this entire list. To the right of this table, you have 2 unlabeled
buttons. The left one is add, and the right one is delete and entry in this
table. Just focus on the right button of the 2, and hit vo space until the list
is empty. You will also delete the undesired alt and windows logo key mappings
this way.

Now, you must create your own mappings, so that your mac command key will
become the alt key in windows, and so that your option key can become your
windows logo key inside windows. Here's how to do it.

First, click add, to add a new mapping to the table. This is the left unlabeled
button, to the right of the table. A new window appears, that you will later
close with an ok button to return here.

In the new window, you see your mac modifier keys with checkboxes, and a combo
box for an additional key. For example, you will hear shift unchecked checkbox,
and command, unchecked checkbox. In this case, where we want to map our option
key to the windows logo key, we don't need the combo boxes in this dialog, so
ignore them for now. Focus on

Known Accessibility Issues?

2011-09-05 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, all,

I'm wondering if there is a way to look up known issues on the Apple site,
specifically VO issues. I am kind of reluctant to report an issue, only to
receive a response indicating that it is known about already and being worked
on. Is there a VO known issues page?

Thanks,
Teresa

Re: Scanners and OCR

2011-09-05 Thread Joanne Chua
hi there,

depends on what sort of document and how often you using it? the
"ocation" can mean ones a week or ones a month or ones in few months.

i personally suggest you to use ABBY Reader, its accessible,
affordable, and one of the few greatest scanning software i come
across cormertially.

however, if your "ocation" is ones in a few months, you might want to
try with Mac Image Capture before you invest extra money on ABBY
Reader.

although by saying so, i know some scanners manifecture e.g. Epson
does come with ABBY Reader as part of their software driver itself.

good luck

Re: dashboard getting on my nerves

2011-09-05 Thread Eric Caron
Dashboard is my friend!

Once I set up dashboard I really liked it! there was a earlier thread,
I think on this list that gave many tips. here are some I remember.

First to clean up some of the frustrating keyboard issues go to system
preferences and to Mission Control Uncheck the first group of check boxes.
This will get rid of the control right arrow bringing up dashboard. It does
other things that make the dashboard less intrusive.
now when you press f12 the dashboard appears and press it again and it is
really gone. When in the dashboard use the window chooser to move between
apps, actually called widgets.

I am using weather widgets, language translation , ical recent event
widget, and many more useful dashboard widgets .

One very useful tip was how to delete a widget. First when in dashboard go to
the widget bar by going to the window chooser and select widget bar. Then when
on the widget you want permanently deleted press VO Command F2.

I think of these widgets as being like apps on the iPhone. they are usually
easy to use and preform a specific task quickly.

I hope this helps turn dashboard from evil to friendly!

Scanners and OCR

2011-09-05 Thread Mark Colman
Hello all,

Would like to get some advice on using scanners with a Mac (running Lion if
this is relevant). I occasionally need to scan printed documents to send by
email or for archival purposes. Does Mac OS have its own utility or app for
working with a scanner or are we reliant upon manufacturer's own
drivers/software (which, from past experience on Windows, is very hit and miss
as far as accessibility is concerned).

Also, what experience do people have of scanning a document and using OCR to
get VoiceOver (or whatever) to read out the contents of the document?

Cheers,

Mark

You could manage with 2Gb; however, I think you will find the experience les
than desirable. I highly recommend you get 4Gb of ram as a minimum. Some will
recommend 8Gb, but you will do fine with 4.

Hi Jorge,
The person who I owe a lot to, here, is Mike Arrigo. He did 13 podcasts about
the mac, one of which was about fusion. And that was so clear, and so complete,
that it took me less than a day to get going. Mike, great job, for many of us.
You can find mike's podcasts on www.blindcooltech.com. Even if you have had a
mac for some time, it is worth revisiting those podcasts.
