No problem. In short, the interface works, but the text display is blank as
far as VoiceOver can see. And, I did verify with my sighted wife that,
indeed, the bible is visually present on the screen. As I recall, VoiceOver
 reports Eloquent has no windows.

Also, as I stated in my previous MSG, I sent two emails to the developer
reporting the situation. Again, keep in mind, this only happened after
installing Mavericks. Upto that point, everything was fine. I even upgraded
to a later version of Eloquent a bit later, 4.2 I think, still no joy. So,
@ this point I remain sad but hopeful that the situation will be resolved @ a
 later date.

 Hope this answered your questions,

Mavericks, it no-longer works with VoiceOver. I have tried to contact the
developer several times, but received no reply.

To my knowledge, no other applications for the Mac are completely
accessible only a few even have limited accessibility. It's sad, but it
just doesn't seem to be a priority for any of the companies out there.
Well, that was the feeling I got after contacting some of them. I wish you

Re: Deleting an App on the iPhone 5 S

2014-09-15 Thread BobH.
A double-tap is to use A single finger to tap twice,
a 2finger double tap is to use 2 fingers, spaced apart ideally so iOs knows
there's two, and tap twice.
Double-tap-and-hold means you use 1 finger to tap twice, and keep your
finger down on the second tap; it makes a difference.

Sorry for not understanding. When you say double tap, do you mean two
fingers together and tap the icon twice. If I do a normal double tap, the
App opens. I tried finding the App and holding two fingers together and tap
the icon, my fingers went in all different directions.

Subject: question about restoring iPhone from iTunes

Hi all:

Quite recently, today in fact, I had opportunity to DFU my phone. As you
may be aware, this resets the phone to factory defaults, installs the
current public version of iOS, and makes you restore the phone from a
backup. No problem, I backed up today before this became an issue, so all
was good. However, when I restored, all of my folders came over, contents
exactly where they should be, but I had 4 pages of apps instead of the 2 I
had when I made the backup. It turns out the iTunes library has a bunch of
apps I installed previously on my phone but have since uninstalled. So once
the backup was restored, I was then also given all of the apps I didn't want
on my phone any more.

Is there a way to make iTunes only restore the apps in a particular backup?
I could have restored from iCloud and just had the apps that were on my
phone, but this method seemed like it was going to be faster and it probably
was. However, deleting 2 pages worth of apps wasn't how I wanted to spend a
few minutes of my time this afternoon.

Thanks in advance for any help/input.

Best,

-John

I'd go for a Macbook Air. With 4GB of ram, and 128GB of storage, you'd only
spend $899. I'd suggest upgrading the storage, though. The only differences
between the 11-inch and 13-inch are the price, an SD card slot in the
13-inch, and smaller function keys on the top row, and arrow keys, on the

Apple Care plans cover spills and scratches, this is the only reason I can
gather to go with bestbuy's protection plan, in addition to applecare. do
users ever extend appleCare plans, to two years, or whatever the maximum
allows? is there anyway when issuing commands to use only VO keys, minus
others to preform all tasks? Can hot keys be assigned, in the event a key

I'd go for a Macbook Air. With 4GB of ram, and 128GB of storage, you'd
only spend $899. I'd suggest upgrading the storage, though. The only
differences between the 11-inch and 13-inch are the price, an SD card slot
in the 13-inch, and smaller function keys on the top row, and arrow keys, on
 the 11-inch.

As to questions, Apple Accessibility is good, but I found it easier to
email this list when I was learning. Both are great resources, though, and
nothing stops you from using them both. Don't forget about www.applevis.com
as well, where you'll find forums, guides, podcasts, and so on. There's even
a link on the homepage for those new to the Mac.

Since then, I've purchased a book on the subject, and its my hope
that i'll be better equipped to deal with my potential new computer as a
whole. VoiceOver is part of the OS I know, but whitch OS works best in the
way of accessibility, i.e., Mavericks, Mountain Lion or Tiger? Which model
of the macBook is the most usable and popular for blind users? i don't need
anything with extreme graphics, and don't think this would have any impact
on VoiceOver describing labeled graphics. Aren't that type of graphics and
display more visually appealing for the sighted? I know windows 8 is out,
but feel the OS has changed drastically, and feel a change is needed. Do
people usually utelize Apple Accessible tech support or this list for
problems and questions? There's only a limited amount of time that Apple
Accessible tech support can help me, and just wanna be sure I've covered all
 my bases properly.

Re: Has anyone got the U2 album?

2014-09-15 Thread Yuma Antoine Decaux
Everyone knows this was bad advertising. I almost felt as though apple didn't
have anything left to show so they tried wooing the crowd with this u2 stunt. I
don't listen to u2 since the 90s. I don't listen to 50 to 60 year olds trying
to get young again. I don't like apple pushing their album on my itunes like
that. This kind of overseer type control of everyone's accounts, think that
apple pay system which I'm sure is tim cook's little accountant mentality baby
project. is starting to smell like perfume on bracelets to me. And this is not
good at all. All the guys are interested in showing with their tech is how
useful it is to get them to the karaoke bars (ok guys why not just cut through
the bush and talk strip clubs too) or hiking around yosemite or whatever other
hill on this planet, or listening to another person's heartbeat, etc. To this
last point, I'd like to add that they crammed the chips in for the developers
to crowd in and find innovative systems. However, Apple still gets all the cake
and their executives get to go to more karaokes and strip clubs. So in the end,
we're stuck again with the leser evil. This sucks bad.

Re: Bookshare Daisy Reader

2014-09-15 Thread Daniel
Couldn't agree more. Students should come first when Bookshare thinks of
developing these programs, and, while Windows is pretty easy to develop on, Mac
surely can't be to difficult.
Sure Windows is more used, in the relm of programs being written for it, and on
some websites, but just like readers can be developed for Windows users, they,
too, can be developed for Mac. That's like saying, in my opinion at least, that
Mac users do not matter. While this may not be the case, it, from an outside
point, does look that way.
Then again, if Bookshare needs Mac testers and/or developers, why not reach out
and ask?
Just my thoughts. I hope you are able to find something that'll work for your
student's needs.

Re: Bible Programs Revisited

2014-09-15 Thread Cheryl Homiak
For some reason I've gotten this email, assuming it's the same one, three times.

This is very nice, but I think people are looking for a Bible program with
built-in study aids and note-taking capabilities and access to different
versions, etc. It isn't that hard to find various versions of the Bible, but
finding an accessible comprehensive tool is much more challenging. Sighted
people have various comprehensive programs from which they can choose and to
which they can add and update; we really don't. This doesn't mean I'm
unthankful for all the versions of the Bible I have - braille, recorded,
electronic. I still remember my desperate longing for a Bible at age nine, and
I appreciate every single Bible version and tool I have! I'm just explaining
what people would be looking for in addition to this that is available, albeit
sometimes at an extensive cost, to sighted people.

Also, as I stated in my previous MSG, I sent two emails to the developer

Mavericks, it no-longer works with VoiceOver. I have tried to contact the
developer several times, but received no reply.

To my knowledge, no other applications for the Mac are completely
accessible only a few even have limited accessibility. It's sad, but it
just doesn't seem to be a priority for any of the companies out there.
Well, that was the feeling I got after contacting some of them. I wish
you luck hope someone will chime in here bring an app to our attention
that has been previously over looked.

 Blessings,

 CJ

Re: Podcast Questions.

2014-09-15 Thread Alex Hall
You can tell it to ignore unlabeled graphics, I believe. If you're thinking of
the way Jaws constantly speaks random graphics with numbers in dialogs, though,
VoiceOver doesn't do that.

As to help, here's an article about all the ways to get help on the Mac itself.
I don't know that braille is an option directly from Apple, but I seem to
recall APH having a braille guide? Maybe that was the iPhone? I don't recall,
but if someone else does, can you clarify? Anyway, that article:

Pasting from TextEdit to numbers spreadsheet

Re: Pasting from TextEdit to numbers spreadsheet

2014-09-15 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Separate each value with tabs in order to have them appear in different cells.
This is accomplished reasonably quick and easy in TextEdit by using the
Find/Replace functionality. For example, if you had previously place a comma
between the values, then enter the comma in the Find field and enter option-tab
in the Replace field. Holding down the Option key while pressing the tab tells
TextEdit to use the tab character instead of automatically moving to the next
item.

Re: Storage Options and Hard Drives.

2014-09-15 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
One advantage of SSD is speed, especially compared to low-power laptop
spinning drives. I was once working with a guy who went from launching
vmware to working in windows in about 3 seconds on a MacBook Air with
SSD. Not sure if that is typical but it was impressive. I think hard
drives just haven't kept up with the rest of the computer architecture
such that our CPUs idle waiting for the disk to spin. SSD is a step
forward in re-aligning the storage speed with the leaps all the other
subsystems have taken. At least SSD costs seem to keep on dropping every
year. A quick check of Newegg points to about $US .60 per GB which, at
one time, would have been considered cheap for a spinning disk. While
the crossover for the cost of SSB per GB matching spinning disks is
still years in the future, the differential isn't what it used to be.
It's also a diminishing return where, eventually, you'll have more
storage than you can fill for the life of the machine. I used to go
through several hard drive upgrade over the life of a machine but now
days I seldom run out, but maybe that's just me.

WD My Book or My Passport will do just fine for most people. If you

Re: Has anyone got the U2 album?

2014-09-15 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I'm not sure why there's all this noise about privacy. The album showed up in
your Purchased section of your iTunes account. If you didn't want the album,
you simply ignored it, didn't bother downloading it and life goes on. There's
thousands of free apps out there, songs of the week that are free for the
taking and much more, we download or ignore as we feel fit. In fact, iOS 8 is
coming out this Friday, it's free for those of us who wish to use it. You'll
likely get some notifications from Apple and Software Update that it's ready
for you. Whether you choose to download and install is your prerogative, it's
certainly not a privacy issue that it was made available to you. Send back my
Apple device just because I was given a free U2 album that I may or may not
enjoy, seems a little over the top.

Oh well, that's my rant, I'm done now.

Later...

Re: New Member Awaiting Approval

2014-09-15 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
I do the admin work for the list. Generally every join request gets an
email from me just asking a bit about how they found the list and such.
It's a basic spam filter to make sure the person wanting to join is a
real person. I wait up to 30 days and if I don't hear anything back I
reject the request. You might be surprised how many requests get
rejected in a month's time but the end result is we are pretty clear of
spammers. As far as I can tell I only have three outstanding join
requests and emails have been sent to all of them.

Re: Storage Options and Hard Drives.

2014-09-15 Thread Barry Hadder
I was thinking in terms of an external. Deciding on an sSD for an internal for
the system is a different thought process all together.
My thoughts are that if I can afford a 512 GB internal, then I would go for it
without hesitation. I personally wouldn’t feel comfortable with anything less
though, so I would be OK settling for a 512 GB spinning drive.
External SSDs are not worth the cost for most people. They are aimed at the
pro market. I got a 1 TB WD My Passport for $70 from Amazon. Does everything
I need. Should last for several years.

On Sep 15, 2014, at 1:02 PM, 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
macvisionaries@googlegroups.com wrote:

One advantage of SSD is speed, especially compared to low-power laptop spinning
drives. I was once working with a guy who went from launching vmware to working
in windows in about 3 seconds on a MacBook Air with SSD. Not sure if that is
typical but it was impressive. I think hard drives just haven't kept up with
the rest of the computer architecture such that our CPUs idle waiting for the
disk to spin. SSD is a step forward in re-aligning the storage speed with the
leaps all the other subsystems have taken. At least SSD costs seem to keep on
dropping every year. A quick check of Newegg points to about $US .60 per GB
which, at one time, would have been considered cheap for a spinning disk. While
the crossover for the cost of SSB per GB matching spinning disks is still years
in the future, the differential isn't what it used to be. It's also a
diminishing return where, eventually, you'll have more storage than you can
fill for the life of the machine. I used to go through several hard drive
upgrade over the life of a machine but now days I seldom run out, but maybe
that's just me.

If you have the money for one, than that’s great. But, you don’t need

production. They are much more costly.
WD My Book or My Passport will do just fine for most people. If you choose
that option, don’t git the version for Mac. it cost more and all you need to
do is git the PC version and reformat it.

The trick is that any response tells them the have a live working
account, that their message got through the spam filter, that a user
actually read the message and took the time to reply. That's like gold
in a spammer's list, which they can now sell as a top quality email

more friends and so on.

I got it. Go to your music not the store, but to music, and look at
your
purchased or under the artist. When it came out, nobody had to do
anything to grab it, it seriously automatically hit your library when
they launched it. I found it last night and was amazed at the fact that
it was there that easily. If you need more help let me know but it's
already in your library. Talk to you soon.

Hi,

I could be mistaken, but on the Bookshare.org site, when one is downloading a

Re: Bookshare Daisy Reader

2014-09-15 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello,

The Humanware Companion is not compatible with the Mac OS environment. Using
the Bookshare Reader that was just recently suggested would be the best method
to read a book. I usually read my books either on my iPhone through Voice Dream
reader or on either my Victor Reader Stream NG or my PlexTalk Pocket. Both of
these devices have way better battery life than my iPhone. JMO.

I used to go
through several hard drive upgrade over the life of a machine but now
days I seldom run out, but maybe that's just me.

production. They are much more costly.
WD My Book or My Passport will do just fine for most people. If you
choose that option, don't git the version for Mac. it cost more and
all you need to do is git the PC version and reformat it.

does work very well.

For best performance you need a newer mac with the best display

Make sure accessibility shortcuts are turned on.
Make sure smooth images is on.
Make sure mouse tracking is set to move the window when the

Hello,

The Humanware Companion is not compatible with the Mac OS environment. Using
the Bookshare Reader that was just recently suggested would be the best
method to read a book. I usually read my books either on my iPhone through
Voice Dream reader or on either my Victor Reader Stream NG or my PlexTalk

finding an accessible comprehensive tool is much more challenging. Sighted
people have various comprehensive programs from which they can choose and to
which they can add and update; we really don't. This doesn't mean I'm

Separate each value with tabs in order to have them appear in different

option-tab in the Replace field. Holding down the Option key while pressing
the tab tells TextEdit to use the tab character instead of automatically
 moving to the next item.

Re: YoruFukurou and yosemite

2014-09-15 Thread Daniel Miller
I hate to burst your bubble about TW Blue for mac, but from what the developer
told me, he's not sure if he's going to continue work on the mac version, since
he doesn't have a mac himself, and runs OS X in a virtual machine under
windows, which impacts performance.
As far as the YoruFukurou thing goes, we'll have to wait until Yosemite is out
publicly before making any judgement calls on that.

skyscanner

2014-09-15 Thread Jean
Hello:
In response to the thread on accessible air tickets, I downloaded and tried the
skyscanner app. All went well until I went to book the flight and I was taken
to an external site that was just as flaky as the one's I wanted to avoid. So
I tried again entering a different flight parameter and same thing happened.
So I went to the skyscanner site on my Mac and similar nonsense.
If someone is using it successfully could you please provide some guidance?
Thanks,

Re: question about podcast app

2014-09-15 Thread Ray Foret Jr
You will be very happy to know that the answer is yes. All you have to do a new
iPhone, is this. Go to settings, and from there, you want to go to Podcasts.
Then, double tap it.
This will open up everything that you can set up in Podcasts on the universal
bases on your iPhone. What do you want to do then, is make sure that the sync
button is pressed. If I remember correctly, this should be priced by default.
Now, you want to do the same thing and iTunes.

First, make sure that your iTunes preferences is set in such a way that
Podcasts or shown. Then, you want to go to the library view, and select
Podcasts from that view.
You will notice, as you Villon right from there, that, there is a settings
button eventually. You want to press that button, now, by default, the sync
button should also be checked. If it is not, you can press it, and that'll be
that.
It is my experience, so far, that, barring a few minor differences, the look
and feel and use of the podcast section at iTunes is very similar to that of
the podcast app.
In fact, I suspect, that, what Apple did was this. On the iPhone, they broke
off of iTunes is various functions into separate apps, but, left the podcast up
for you to download yourself instead of just putting it on the iPhone. With
iTunes, they just threw all of those are good functions into a single app.
Okay. That's probably where the more the dancer than you really wanted, but,
hope it helps.

Sincerely,
The Constantly Barefooted Ray,
Still a very happy Mac and iPhone user!

All,
I'm using the Podcasts app on my iPhone. Is there a way that iTunes on my Mac
and podcast on my iPhone can sync together? Right now when I listen to a
podcast on my Mac and delete it it does not delete from my phone. Is there a
way for these two apps to sync together?
Thanks for the help,
Laura

In Mail, go to the Window menu, then the Previous Recipients item. In there is
a search field and a list of addresses; find the one you want gone and hit
delete. There's no confirmation, it's just gone.
